so ive been watching alot of vampire movies and such and noticed that some vampires are portrayed as having an obssession with death. (I Think i spelled that right.) i want to know why this isand what people think about it. what are your views on death and the obssession with it, particulary with vampires.
I would imagine the characters are portrayed as having an obsession with death because in most films the vampires are, in fact, (un)dead.

I agree with mrd on this one. They are obsessed with it because it is what they are and what they are dealing with. I don't know why certain people are obsessed with death. I never have been although it is hard to tell that from all the skeletons hanging around our house. Hmmmm... :)
The obssession with the death is common, specially if you are talking about a dark environment like this one. I cannot tell i'm obssessed with death, but it does catch my attention and some of my deepest thougths. I think vampires are obssessed with death beacuse it's their modus vivendi, the literally suck someone else's life and they are inmortal, whichmeans they can't die of "natural causes", wouldn't you be obssessed with something so familiar and daily and yet so unknown?
They need it to be a story line so this way it seems that the obviouse about them.
In a true state of death, the soul is released.
In mythic/hollywood vampires, they're dead, but souls kept to walk on, on earth.
i think they like to give that feel off but i think it is just more of an acceptance of death
Darkthrone has good point here. I should add though, that the majority of people don't want to see a vampire film with an emphasis of the wonders of living. :)

Vampires are maybe obessed with death because its something they have passed by as such, though i thought they were more obessed with returning to the normal life and seeing the sun again (guess that could be an obsession with death considering what the sunlight does to vampires)
That's truth, mr.D. What people are looking for, in a movie or a book, is to identify themselves with the hero/heroine. People often get depressed and want to see their own mental horror in a movie. Besides usually the "dark" is seen as pain, sorrow and death.
In most Vampire movies, they are obsessed with imortality...Some say they are already dead, but imortal...It depends on the movie...
I belive that they (in movies) feel it is a curse so they go and be all depressed and obbese with death..
most of the vampire movies ive seen desplay more of an erotic sexual theme to them more than death
To die, only to live again-- the soul immortal lives rather we've won or lost.
People obsess with death because it arouses their senses. The reality is most peoples lives are mundane and death feels like a realease. Death also adds excitment and allows the brain to release natural chemicals that can take you to ecstacy. Death arouses people because it is so intricatly linked with life. The presence of Death can even sexually excite. It fills people with adour at funerals. It is somehting that touches all lives as some point and naturaly holds a facination.
Their can be no life without it.
The obsessed with death thing I think it would be obsessed with the death of humans not theirs, therefore the obsession of killing to survive.Another reason is cause they are portrayed as evil and UNdead.
I think when it comes to the Vampires being portrayed around death is because there trying to get across the differences between humans and vampires and the fact that a vampire is dead shows that / or represents the fact that they do not feel anything, unlike humans.
Vampires aren't exactly obsessed with death they just sometimes can't help it
I think the people that make the movies are obessesed with death not the vampires.
I agree with DarkThrone, when she says that the vampire is obsessed with life.
Like two opposites, life and death can become an obsession depending on the point of view.
I'm talking about Hollywood vampires.
I'm not a vampire, but I do have what you can call an obsession with death. I think about it a lot.
Yes you can be not a vampire and think about it a lot.I do it as well.
well, technically they are dead so I guess they would be obsessed with death. I am not sure. I personally and obsessed with death.
i think the ppl making the movies r the ones really obssesed and r olso following the steriotype ( how ever i write that ) of the evil vampire.
Lol I doubt if the movie makers are obsessed with death their unique interest is the cash!!!
I find death intriguing, I mean whats after it? what will it be like? Its a type of thing that can never be answered untill you feel it yourself.
i think i'd like to be reincarnated as myself so i can fix all the mistakes i made...but i seriously doubt that's going to happen lol
Vampires are more obsessed with Immortality than death. That is the whole idea in movies as well. They want to live, they want to be immortal.
its not vampyres who have an obession with death, at least not all...nor is it just them.
you have to understand that the media and those who truly dont know or care to think that vampyres are the soul-less walking dead...sorry to burst anyones bubble but they are not.
Quite honestly, the media has a hard time getting all thier facts right anyway. But then again they have to make what sells.
Honestly, vampires are more obsessed with sex than anything else. Thats one of the things that biting helps with...tehe. It may seem like they are obsessed with death because they kill and are of the undead; but killing by biting is what they do to keep alive. I'd say they are most obsessed with life.
In all honesty, who can tell me that they dont want something, just for the experince and the unknown?
hmmm i dunno if ive ever noticed that. its probably some hollywood hoax. like cleopatra. in real life she was ugly, fat and had big big teeth. in the movies she is slender with big boobs and is a sexual icon. I dont have an obsession with death but i am intriged by it.
-baby fangs
it is a lable, darkness and death have been hand and hand though out horror and vamp moveis. death is some thing that most people don't know much about same for wiccan and vampirism, so people link them together.( there might some miss spelled words, sorry)
yes, like people have been saying, i think it's just that vampires in movies, being "undead" carry with them the mystery of what it is to be dead... something that the viewer has no real notion of. ...although, i also agree with what's been said, that vampires are really more intruiged by life and immortality.
I think that they don't have an obsesion with death, but with life!
alot of people seem to think that vampire's are obbessed with life and not death...interesting
death dont bother me to much at all. there are alot of people i wouldnt mind dead but i dont spend to much time on the subject there are laws and all that i have already been locked up and i dont plan on going back and peoples lives dont mean enough to me for that
How so that vampires are more obsessed with Immortality than anything else?......do the actually want to live for ever?. (Of course, I'm always speaking of the fictionalization of them).
Humans are the ones who are obssesed with immortality!
some are and i think it depends on why one would like to live forever.
Death for mewould be nothing less than a release from my pain! But that would just be a waste! As for Vampires....who knows??? maybe they are maybe they arent!!!
Angelina Jolie is.
And speaking of dead, where's the one who made this post?
In most movies I have seen, and this is my interpretation, the obsession with death is that they have not yet reached that state. They wish to punish mortals by making them immortal as god or the devil has made them. Their facination with death is to actually find it, but on the other hand they fear it as it is still unknown to them thus they hide from the sun and try to live as all mortals would. "With a Fear of it."
I think movies bring out the wrong side of vampires alot of the time. since a vampire is immortal, i believe that they are wanting life more then death. Death in general, if just a normal thing of life, and its the unexpected, its the thrilling knowledge of not knowing what you do when you die that captures everyone.
Me again. I still say that vampires aren't obsessed with it... But now I say that they are surrounded by it so they've gotten used to death - They still can't help it
well in the movies vampires are treated like undeads so that´s why i think they are obsessed with death.
it is to my understanding, from what i've heard "normal" people (or preps if that's what you want to call them) talking about, vampires are a symbol for the dark lord satan, who is the king of murder and all that is evil. To me, i think what i have just said is based on the catholic belief and people all fear the devil, and being symbols of the devil, vampires are in turn feared causing the obsession with death, blood, and anything else in that category
A lot of those vamps in the movies have lived for like 700 years... maybe they're just tired of life and really long for death.... but the human instinct to live won't let them just kill themselves or allow anyone to kill them.... they're like stuck between feelings... it's mental torture.
Death is sometimes a gift as it would be for me tonight it ends pain and suffering so no one else can make you feel the pain of being alive.
the whole vampire 'mythology' revolves around death. Osiris is the god of the dead and lord of the underworld. the fascination with vampires stems in large part from the defiance of death. it is only in relatively recent times that the vampire has been portrayed as a sexy count who ought to be respectable, but is the personification of the breakdown of victorian ideals...but the root of the vampire is in death, and how to cheat it, or perhaps, not be afraid of it...
If we were too look at it from the character's point of view, I guess you could say that they are obsessed with the one thing they are denied, by what they are. An imortal, who's instinct to preserve thier own life sometimes overwhelms thier desire to be released from an "eternity" of loss, doubt and regret.
not all vampires are obsessed with death. alot are intrigued or fascinated with it but not obsessed.
I think most vampires are not odsessed with death. In some cases they actually longed for the life they once had.
Ahh... but that is the crux, the very HEART of the matter isn't it? In pining for a lost life, they seek death to escape the one they currently inhabit.
well the reason im obssessed with death is because it is dark and you dont know what happens once you die
I am with darklife...Vampires are in fact obsessed with life...The lust for life is what drives them to do what they are feared for...The sustenance that they take from feeding is the lifeforce that they crave so much.
Movie are fictional Vampires do not crave death, they already know it, the fact that a lot of their victims end up dead is not through craving of death...It is through the fact their victims had somethig the vampire needs and wants life.
Sorry i was supposed to agree with darkthrone not darklife
I agree wiht darkthrone, vampires are obssesed with life not death. people obssesed with death are usually youngsters or people who are too focused on the negative things in "life".
in the movie they are portrying that the vampires have no fun in life and they want to die because all they loved are gone but it is not like this i dont think in reall life
I have to agree with whisper0666
I was thinking the same thing after I Read it .. heh. ^^
Vampires are obsessed with death because the themselves are not living, and yet they're not dead either. although they are much like a living person, they can never really be living again, but they can die. there is also the fact that vampires feed from the living, and they hide in the shadows of the dead.
I am a strong believer in reincarnation, and out of body experiences, I think death is a part of life that noone or thing can escape. You begin to die from the moment you are born...there is no way to avoid death so you must fulfil whatever purpose you are here for and if you fail in doing so you are brought back, and given another chance to complete your task...but if you have coplete your quest through your journey of life then you are granted either passage safely to Shangri la or you if you have completed your task at the expense of others pain and torment then you are given a direct ticket to Hells pit. Do not pass go do not collect $200 go directly to hell. Only time will tell for each of us where we shall spend eternity.
It's true! The vampire have a obsession with death on every movie! Underworld, interview whit a vampire and dracula 2000.
Im a believer in death I love it and I think that some ppl when they think about death they think that it has to do with a curse, vampires, hexs, and that sort of thing when they dont think that the reason could be because of them or natural cause!!! I think that ppl have there reasons for why they died and even If the cause might be because of vampires or naturally, we shouldnt judge until we get all the facts out!!! Even though I still love vampires and all that!!!!
I wouldn't say I was obsessed, yet more of a believer that one day I will die. I accept it, and maybe that's why I have no fear of risking my life. The mortality we each hold is only for a few years...the immortality of our souls will last for eternities to follow.
This is a hard subject well since a vampire is already dead they think of death more deferintly more divenley so anyone could guess?
Simple Death passed them by and is no longer ascertainable for them. That is Why Vampire's Are Obsessed with Death.
It is most likely because vampires are undead, and they either long for the release of dying after so many years of being immortal.
i don't know but i only want to pass on to a different world so "death to my existance" is what i am "obcessed" with
I feel that like everyone had said,It makes for a good plot to the movies. Also it just wouldn't be a story if the main character would get killed off that easy.
i agree with Illyria
but not just that i luv death i respect the dead and lik Illyria said i accept that one day i will die
i agree with you in the respect that hollywood is inclined to portray vampires with an obsession with death. in the post, numerous responses have outlined many possible reasons as to why this is so.
though, i would like you to consider that most vampires, outside of hollywood have an instinctual aversion to death and the death. there is a lingering fascination of the fraility of human life, though the state of death is mundane to a vampire.
the dead tend to repulse vampires outside of hollywood fabrication, as it is a state of weakness, disgust and uselessness, often provoking reminisence of their previous lives.
thats my two cents,
daeg.
i agree with the fact that people over obsesse on death because thay dont see any other way out of the pain that is why it is better to talk about it.
I agree with mrd's response. Vampires are dead, but at the same time still alive. They could be obsessed with it because they could never die of "natural" causes. Who knows for sure tho?
i don't believe it's an obsession with death as much as it is with AFTER death.. you know?
As vampires live (unlive) on the border between life and death, I imagine they are curious about what death really must feel like. Since they hunt quite a bit and bring death to victims I believe they are curious as to what that feels like to a mortal. For vampires may have hightened senses each one-although they won't admit it-still somewhat misses some of the pleasures of mortality.
vampires are dead, they cause death for their own "survival"
I believe they are obsessed with death cause they know nothing about it and fear what will happen afterwards...
Let's put it this way, you are born and brought into this world to die...It is a part of life, no matter how you want to word it, be it in movie's or reality. We live to die!
most movied do not show reality as it is. they make it up and they creaste a whole wrong universe around that obssesed vampires...thay kill just to live...they're not obssesed with death. and they are not that scary as they appear to
in the movies the vampires are obsessed with death I think because they are supposed to be tortured souls and live in constant hunger and torment and they want their miserable (un)life to come to an end
For the most part, I believe that vampires aren't so much obsessed with death, but the path that leads beyond that! For most, this path is not a viable choice!
it is the obsessed with the unknown that Does it for me.
Suppose this is because vampires are surrounded by death. So many rumors and stories of how they are the "walking undead" and all.
