the toth deck is the easiest to translate and work with if you are new to divianation...333
I first began with the The Morgan-Greer Tarot.
I pmed you a link too. Hope it helps.
You can buy "starter decks" which are basically just the Major Arcana... however I find these limiting. Just find a deck that you resonate with and go from there.
Does Tarot predict the future, or is it used to find deeper understanding in one's self?
I started with the crows magick deck and I still use it to this day.. everyday.. I dont think it matters what deck you start with.. I think you should find a deck that you can relate to.. there are so many different kinds now-a-days! Then you can learn from there! ~good luck hun~
I have a Fairy Deck that is quite lovely, but I doubt it would work for you...
I would suggest starting with the Thoth Tarot Deck. Its very informative...the deck alone. It provides you with all cards, an instruction manual, and a layout map to aid you in your first reading. Also you can get The Book of Thoth. The deck will run you about $30 at Barnes and Noble. I've had mine and used it several times...it's never ever been wrong. Even when I do readings for myself.
Another bonus...if you're into Tool at all, it's the same deck Maynard uses.
Doesn't matter which one you get as long as it's something you can relate to. There are tons, so I would get what feels right and is the closest to your interests or beliefs.
I personally have The Goddess and also the Rider-Waite.
What is going to matter most is how much energy and focus you put into learning how to read them.
I use the Crows magick deck...its good for beginners also.
Hey Wolfsbohne,
Tarot can predict the future but it can also let you get a better understanding as to who you are as well
I use the daughters of the moon tarot deck and it is pretty easy to read but I find that it is the deck you seem to have a connection to that is going to be the best one for you to use.
I started with a Rider-Waite deck. I now own four different decks that all serve different purposes.
My advice would be go with a deck that feels right to you.
WomanOfHeart has the best idea, go looking and find one that you like. Nothing fancy I find the Rider-Waite useless for me but others love it. I use the Witch's Tarot as it has clear recognizable imagery.
the imagery means nothing unless you understand it... they are just pictures.
study arcatipical imagery first
Sorry, friend but imagery is all important to beginners in divination, through their subconscious or by "divine inspiration " their power to see past , present, and future is tied to the images they see in the cards.
i would agree but you need to have a base in which to start, and understanding others interprtation of what the images mean then you have that base to draw from...once you have been at it for a while you will find new meaning in the cards for your self...333
personally i found the Thoth deck a little difficult. it all depends on taste i guess. the one i find easiest and the most comfortable is Tarot of the Cat People.
btw - i have found that the Tarot is very good at predicting the future as well as finding deeper insights to the self.
there are lots of catalogues and sites so just google Tarot and look at every one you see. eventually you will find one that speaks to you, and that is the one for you.
Go with a deck that you feel drawn to, I started of with the Rider-Waite deck, still looking for another deck, but i don't feel drawn to any
I would say, whichever deck you are drawn too.
Wolfsbohne
yes both I would say.
Tarot is very personal, you need to try a few before settling on one that feels right
The most powerful sources of information come from within; the Tarot aids in coming in contact with one's Higher Self.
It can help guide you and make decisions on what is best for you, and also tell you something of the future, but events and decisions can change your future as well.
I personally think that the best tarot card deck around is the Rider-Waite deck...
Rider-Waite Tarot Deck
The best deck to buy is one that you feel drawn to. If you go online there are websites that tell you how to create your own tarot deck. To answer Wolfsbohne question tarot doesn't tell the future it is meant as a guide.
Go with the deck you are drawn too, but also read thoroughly before you begin.
Hurtsoulless,
Thanks for saying that. I couldn't agree more. There was another thread about tarot where I had said something similar and had someone jump down my throat over it.
Thank you everyone, for all the wonderful information. I appreciate all of you who took the time to find me the information I sook. I am grateful to you all. May the Goddess Bless. ♥
it doesn't matter which deck you start with. if you listen to the cards they will Tell you which one to buy.
when you go to choose a deck pick them all up and the deck that speaks to you is the on you should buy.
for sure r.k.
also shop and seek what feels good to you ... when you have the right deck youll know it....
dont know who already seen this from a previous post. but the way i foundf my cards was threw ebay.. the thing was.. my birthday is on march 10 1974... remember that i want presents .. lol anyways. the deck was made in 1974 the 10th page and the third deck on the page.... as soon as i seen that i grabbed them.. good luck
No such thing.. If you do not feel a connection with a tarot deck and you try to read it, you might as well be reading a book in muddy water. They are more then just cards, there is a for lack of better words a vibe. I have been reading a dragon deck for over a year now and I picked up a vampire deck and didnt see anything. It is now the only tarot deck that I will use... and when you find a deck that you fall in sync with experiment, I have a new layout that works great for me...
I would recommend anything by doreen virtue, Goddess oracle, fairy healing, I think there is a mermaid and unicorn deck too. They are easily explained, how to use them, how to protect them etc. Then move on to other decks that get more involved as you get use to doing the readings.
That]s not a game.Just try to begin with tho one that "speaks" to you.
I have a gipsy tarot.
I think it depends on which deck when u go to get them u feel most comfy with and u can understand the best..
"Gypsy Witch Fortune Telling Playing Cards" was my first deck back in the sixties. Its still floating around somewhere too. You can find this deck in some souvenir shops. It is very popular with beginners. There is no easier deck to learn from. It was has the meaning of the card printed right on the cards! With the reverse meanings too. Cards are the same size as playing cards so the deck will fit in your pockets. If you need to learn without paying for manuals or on the spot - buy it.
I think the Waite Tarot Deck is good to start from, thats if you like pictures on your cards.
Tarot of the angels is a very good one to start with!!!
I`m going to have look into this whole Tarot thing seems very interesting...
I agree with others who have said something to the effect of letting the tarot deck choose you.
Tarot, like any method of divination, takes time and practice. I've been doing tarot for for a long time, and find that I'm a more empathic reader. I use a combination of the meaning of the cards, their position in the layout, and my intuition to do readings.
I would recommend the Rider-Waite deck. There is a lot of information out there about it, good books, and what not. An author who writes about it is Eden Gray. Best of luck with the decks!!
I've found that a lot of people [including myself] start well with the Ryder-Waite tarot deck.
I just got the Rider Tarot Deck. I fount it by going through alot of them and it seemed to pick me.
it doesn't matter what is a good beginner deck. each person has a deck they feel is a good beginner deck. A tarot deck chooses it's person, not the other way around. if you feel a draw to a tarot deck, then that is the tarot deck you are to work with. I have 2 such decks. one being the "druid animal oricle" deck and the other being the "Lakota sweatloge" deck.
Yes you have got to find in the one that is calling you. The deck choses you, you dont chose the deck at all.
i have the vampire tarot as my first, and i bourght a book that explaines all the cards and all the positions
I have too many deck that I dont even use at all i just buy them to have them. lol i know that is stupied but it is just to have for that my kids well have them when they want to learn.
I don't really think one works better then anouther but I think it is the person and how the relate to a deck.
Usually the deck finds you before you find it I have gone through several decks throughout my years. I have two decks that I use regularly, one is called The Faeries Oracle which has lots of info on how to use the deck in the book it comes with
The other is the Cartouche ( the Cartouche is a smaller deck than others {25 cards}, and has no major or minor arcana) which also comes with a book and several informative ways to help aid you in reading it.
The Cartouche is also a wonderful deck if you like Ancient Egyptian themes.
How to tarot decks work? Or their readings for that matter? With all the bad stuff I am going through I thought about having this done, but how do you know if someone is really good at it. and I'm scared of bad news.
Depends on the tarot deck & comes with the book to help you learn and understanding what it means of each cards.
I agree that the Thoth deck and Book of Thoth - by: Aleister Crowley are your best choice for beginning as Crowley found many flaws in the original tarot design and improved on it. Also, I don't believe you can find out more about the tarot itself through any but his works, I would also recommend Magick Book 4: parts 1-4 along with the deck and the other book as this helps you translate his unique form of language in describing the symbols of his tarot. Me being big on Crowley and having about half of his books myself, if you choose to go this route, please if you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to message me directly.
What ever deck is given to you for your use on yourself
What ever deck you buy to see for others
What ever deck you steal for both.
personaly I feel that any deck can be a good starter deck. I would say look at several and go with the one with imagry that speaks to you the most. For myself I started with a dragon tarot deck.
Im learning Rider Waite! it's the easiest, most popular, and it portrays the oldest images, =)
i agree with poster above me
except for one thing, for everyone, it is different... i created my first tarot deck as it was the only way i could learn
go to this and read the tarot course, you might find it of some help
http://www.angelfire.com/goth/paganslounge02lrc/tar.html
my first deck was merlins tarot.and it wasnt hard to learn, but if you have trouble there are pleanty of sites online to help
There's also The Tarot Kit for Beginners which has a friendly, basic guide to Tarot written by Janet Berres and also includes a set of the Universal Tarot cards.
The guidebook explains the basics, such as choosing decks, deciphering card meanings, and working with spreads. Readers will learn the history of Tarot, the traditional structure of the deck, and the truth behind common Tarot myths. This kit also includes Lo Scarabeo's Universal Tarot, an ideal deck for beginners.
I started with the OSHO Zen Tarot - but I have many decks and use the one I feel is right for the time.
I have heard Tarot cards are both good and bad, what are they actually used for
i have always been told that you should pick a deck that speaks to ... a deck you are drawn to
I have to say tarot of the witches i have many many decks of tarot cards and that deck is the best
I picked a deck with gods and goddess of greek myth.. I was drawn to it.. But then gave it away cuz it got to freaky for me.
Tarot of a Moon Garden. I started out with the Rider-Waite Deck and have many decks. I also love the Halloween Deck the Black Cat is a great helper in the cards.
I taught my 9 year old niece to read from the Robert Hanson deck and now she is 12 and can pick up any deck and read from it. It is what works for you.
Before I do a reading I meditate and always ask for a prayer of protection. For I feel it is not I who read the cards, but a Higher power working through me.
To answer the post above. Tarot is used as a way of predicting your future. What the cards do, is they examine your life somewhat, and predict your future according to a certain path you are going down. If you change paths, the cards will read differently. That's my opinion.
There are Tarot Decks for Beginners
It can expand your psychic intuition
or/and
to begin to develop the psychic.
The Mythic deck by juliet Sharman-Burke and Liz Greene is a good started deck, since it is characterized by figures from Greek mythology. The archetypes are those that most of us would recognize, therefore making the interpretations of the cards easier.
To be nice just pick what images reach out to you to start with, if it’s fairies then go for it or vampires.
Once you get into tarot and spent some time having fun, you might want to try something very powerful and deep.
The True tarot pack Thoth from Alister.
This was worked on by real people who know what there doing. The images are designed by visions and magical workings.
Personally im totally amazed at the accuracy
i have a question about this. i heard that is unwise to buy your own tarot deck? am i right in this understanding. or do i have my facts wrong.
I actually learned from my grandmother with a standard pack of cards. The cards I use now are just a variation on those and are just as effective as any tarot deck. Find cards that you feel strongly drawn to, and remember that they really are just a guide to help focus your own instincts. If you feel a particular card has a strong significance for you, use that meaning as opposed to any you might read about in a book. I hope you have fun learning:)

Hi Obsidianfury
No picking your own cards is not bad luck or anything else in fact it’s properly why most don’t succeed with cards.
Like your nose pick your own, your tuned into the images you see in the pack… if it gets your creative mind going … buy them or tell someone too if your going to go with babble … next it will be mixed with the other myth of three fold or ten or what ever it is up too right now lol
To me the deck picks it's owner. I personally use the Old Path Deck which has always done well for me.
I have found that not everyone can use the same style of deck. Like a commen one is the Rider Deck but it never works well for me. On the other hand the Dragon deck is too powerful for me but is perfect for a friend of mine.
So really check out as many decks as you can. Always with permission of their owner.
I use the daughters of the moon tarot deck and it is an awesome one to use for women. Most decks are all up or down because they are rectangular shaped but the ones I have are round so they give degrees of up or down. It is a very easy deck to use and you can get it with the book that explains everything as well. This deck was made specifically for women by women but can be used to do readings on men as well. Here is a link so you can check them out.
href="http://www.daughtersofthemoon.com/cards.htm">Daughters of the moon tarot deck
you should not pic the deck but let the deck pick you. this way you can grow on the cards you have and they will grow on you. if you pick something that doesnt feel right to you, you can atract bad spirts to the deck
I'm not sure.
I have just that. A tarot deck thats around 40 years old that just says, 'The Tarot Deck for Beginners'.
It has about 26 cards in it, as well as tell about a few of the basic card positions so to speak.
My deck is from one of those little gift sets that you can get at Borders lol It has a "Tarot On The Go" booklet that explains the major and minor Arcana. I've had the set for years, but never understood it until now.
May I recommend the book "The 2 Hour Tarot Tutor"? I forget who the author is, but ever since I read the first, ten or so pages and used the exercises she provided, I've become a LOT more confident when I give myself readings.
Many people said many wonderful decks and many people says find the one that feels good to you. The hardest deck to read may be the easiest one to you. just go on what you feel.
I myself am looking to purchase my first set of tarot cards but since I live in a small town am forced to purchase them from the net, hence will not be able to touch them first. But from what I have read the Ryder Waite cards are easy to learn. Although I am drawn to the Louis Royo cards as they are so beautiful....
If you are drawn to that deck then that is the deck I would consider.
A Tarot deck is not a Tarot deck unless it has all 78 cards. Period.
Speaking for myself, let the deck chose you there are so many different decks these days. I have had many different ones. I personally like The Cat People. I owuld look at a bunch of different decks and go with the one that "calls to you" I was given my first deck. But just research a couple and see what comes to you liking
I didn't know there were different types of Tarot decks!
But I'm sure you could google it!
Lmao.
-Juggalette givin MMFWCL
i don't have a specific name or anything special but i know a good book store that sell that stuff among other wiccen books and things, if you go to Barns and Nobles (Sp?) and look through there or get help to find it they have a section with that stuff in it
There are lots of different places you can buy decks at, you can buy them online or finding a local shop by going to: www.witchvox.com
to be honest the way i was taught it is best to go with the deck you are drawn to go to a shop and see which pack draws you into its zone and they are the pack you go with mine have bn handed down and not even with a pack they are wrapped in velvet so i cannot state when or what type of deck they are but you will know what deck to go with when you see them
everywhere that sells other pagan stuff, yes, witchvox.com is a great place to start.....
