I've read many stories about different types of vampires from around the world being repelled by different things.
The most well known being garlic, but I've heard of others like Iron repelling the Baobhan-Sith.
What others have you herad of, and do you believe that they would work?

it seems to me that those things are kinda myths... of course for modern vampires or the ones that feel they are modern vampires, i don't think garlic can act as a repellant. In fact, i love garlic to cook... and i am a sang vampire... so i don't thing something can repell me...

I have heard of several different things being used to repel vampires throughout the years. Most of the things used, though, are mainly superstitious in nature and differ from geographic location to geographic location. There have been things like seed's and knot's tied in strings. The locals that used these method's said that the vampires would not be able to continue to pursue them because they would have to stop and pick up and count all of the seeds or stop and untie every single knot. Because of these, locals would fill a suspected vampire's coffin with seed's or place many strings with one to several knot's tied in each string to prevent the vampire from leaving his/her coffin to feed. (See Vampire OCD threads in General Discussion and The Sandbox.) There have been several other things used throughout the years like crosses, holy water, some have used raw silver ore, and other things as well. It all depends on what area you want to look in and the type of vampire in question for that area. Carpe Noctem

The story of the Baobhan Sith and iron is an old one told in the Western Highlands of Scotland and regards a traveler taking sancturay between two horses after three of his companions were devoured by the Baobhan Sith, it is said that they could not get to him because of the iron in the horses shoes.
As I said it is an old story and I think that the iron part was due more from that metal being used for the nails at the crusifiction rather than any blood link.

Actually I believe the iron repelling the Baobahn-Sith is due to the fact that they are fae, not that they are vampires or related to the iron of the nails of the cross.

That kind of thing would have to be a myth, there are many today who do not believe enough to make it into reality. Our thoughts form our beliefs.

The most obvious one that comes to mind for me is garlic, followed by a cross (or other "holy" items). I think that it's all myth because I'm a vampire, and I happen to enjoy eating garlic...especially garlic bread. ^_^

Garlic, cross's and water are the only things that i know of that can repel vampires, i mean they may work for people who believe they work, but since i have never had to ward off a vampire i am not sure if they work or not...

I heard of many, exactly like all the ppl here wich posted.

Now, how would I know if that would work? How would I know that it is authentic?

I never encounterd a vamp, or something that escapes the smell of garlic, or something that is afraid of???who knows what.

Cuz all the ppl here look just like ordinary ppl, and ppl walking the city/orwhateva looks the same, they are all ppl(humans).

So I dont see how can I realisticly form my beleif regarding how that would work, or how would I apply it?

Sorry, I am breaking the mith, but this planet seems like it is inhabited by humans only.

It seems to me like, there is no real vampires, genetical vampires.

Proly we have the chance only, to become an authentic vampire, thanks to our beleifs, and technical skills to fulfill those ideas.

If you're talking about fictional vampires and i pray that you are....

The Yakshis in India are repelled by Iron too. There's a ritual where a set of incantations are performed on anIron nail. This nail when hammered on to the head of a yakshi will render the yakshi powerless....

You have the obvious lore...garlic, crosses, sunlight, holy water...there is also silver from the lore that the man that betrayed Jesus become the very first vampire. There's also lore about iron like CherryAdvocaat said. There's a lot of things, just depends who and what cultures are telling the story.

the garlic thing came from the fact that when in europe they were digging up bodies to check them for signs of not being completely dead, garlic was the only thing that would ward off the smell of the decomposing bodies.

as for crosses, thats a "vampires are evil" so therefore anything "christian" will scare them, because it was believed, obviously, that christianity was good.

in stories garlic crosses and sunlight were some of the ways used to be protected from vampires and most people who read those stories believed in the samething. In truth tho there isnt a real way to protect yourself from a vampire as they are living around us at all times lookin for thier next victim which it be drink or drain their energy they are there lurking around be careful is my own advice there.

Garlic is way to get rid of awful odors. People used it when digging up a grave to make sure a family member's corpse is still there, fearing that they might be a vampire, or their soul is undead. And besides I love eating my pizza with a little garlic on it ;P

Garlic has been a cure all since ancient Egypt and was thought to ward off the plague at one point. Hawthorn I believe is another as well as Guinea Hen Weed and Ash.

Most ancient lore had these plants as cures or repellents for disease but interestingly enough, many of these are still good repellents against some insects (which are carriers of disease and since disease was often misread as vampirism...)

You say how can you repel something dead? I think it is more a matter of repelling something unholy. Maybe but not necessarily.
I know the story of the Baobhan-Sith, and all about them in the sense that they are not the same as 'normal' more well known vampires (Nosferatu).

The Jiang Shi or Chiang-shih from China, was kept away by people nailing a six-inch high length of wood across the bottom of their doorway.
There are more kinds of vampires who are supposed to be repelled by different things other than the Nosferatu, I mean has anyone heard of some of these?

A lot of the thorned bushes are believed to possibly stem from the 'crown of thorns' religious connection but it is equally argued that these plants were old folk cures and remedies for illness as well. I think we can assume that the repellents in folklore adapted to the influence of christianity in much the same way that vampire legend itself adapted to christianity with repellents taking on a christian nature just as the vampire took on an unholy or excommunicated nature.

Crosses were considered a powerful icon by most cultures long before the famous crucifiction and certainly before it was adopted as the sign of Christianity. It too may have been a ward against evil in folklore that was adopted for use against the Christian vampire mythos.

Well crosses would supposedly burn their flesh or drive them off because they were pure evil, and the cross is seen as a symbol of purity.
How the cross is a symbol of purity, I'm not sure, considering a man was supposedly nailed to it while all the sins of the world fell upon him, until the purest being in the universe couldn't look at him.
Modern vampires, while I'm sure could be evil, varying on the vampire, I don't think can really be repelled by anything besides maybe their own phobias...

I highly doubt that a specific repellant for vampires would exist, I can admit we as each individuals can be repelle by some things, but they are mostly personal taste or distaste rather then being general

I do not believe in any said repellants for vampiric souls, each person is different with different things that hurt him or her

I guess it depends what it is you are trying to do and which vampire you're dealing with

Its true that a lot of the legends delay a vampire by scattering things to be counted in its path, but this isn't a real repellant

The ways to destroy a vampire vary depend on what vampire you're dealing with staking, beheading, shrinking it skin

Vampires are considered unholy (if not dead) and so get a mite irked if something that is associated with a deep religious conviction is thrown in its way.

Most repellents seem to be some way of hiding the vampire's target :

The Asasabonsam bit thumbs, so gloves or rings were worn. The Dakhanavar bit feet, so shoes (or sleeping with your feet under your partner's pillow) were normal precautions. The Punyaiama passed a thread down a chimney, so a slow fire was set.

The other posters on here are right, there is a lot of folklore about thorned plants

it is a huge subject

The thread down the chimney folklore is from the Indian Punyaiama, who was an old woman.

She passed a magical thread down the chimney through which she would suck the blood from sleeping or mad/drunk women. If the Punyaiama actually got into your home it would launch a cannibalistic attack on you

So unless you are an Indian vampire of ancient folklore it shouldn't work on you (unless you climb down chimneys).

I personally do not see how some of these object could really repell a vampire, and with todays technology if their were true vampires walking around then they would figure a way around most of these repellants...

I agree with RavenKnight. There is always a way to avoid something, just may take a while to figure out.

I've heard that roses can repel vampires...

I've heard of several things that repel vampires, but for some reason roses always struck me as strange.

Garlic, crosses, holy water, silver or roses nope, more likely to be the stench of booze on the breath or cheap perfume that saves you day.

Has heard of so many but thought Silver and Removing the head from the Body was for killing a Werewolf...Counting the seeds was for delaying and distracting the Vampire to get away .. Then the Garlic was to repell the Vampire where as Holy water would Harm the Vampire in Self defense for the Person in threat of attack but honestly i think their all myths
