I have been wondering lately, what does it take for one to become a high priestess? I would like to hear from different perspectives on this, as I am beginning to feel a real spiritual pull in this direction.
Honestly, I am not sure exactly. I know that there are High Priestesses in Wicca, I'm not sure of other religions that are God/dess based. I am just feeling as though my chosen deity is calling on me to follow a path of higher spiritual involvment if that makes any sense....
Well I think if you want the title, you have to find somewhere that bestows it, and work your way up in their ranks until you can get it. So, find a coven or something like that. I believe they have that as one of their titles. As to what you would have to do to get it, unfortunately I don't know, I'm not that way inclined. But good luck :)
Wicca isnt an organized religion, there are some sects which may have a foundation but Wicca in and of itself isnt real (sorry, google it)
However there are others although I can't think of them off hand. Try a websearch and I'm sure you can find them, perhaps in your area as well.
Any position like this in my religion is either fallen into, or handed down or both. It happens when you have a calling telling you this is your purpose in life. Usually there is schooling and such. You have to show your dedication.
Hey sweetness,
I would think you should try to sit in on a meeting or two for groups that interest you until you find one that fits. From there, i'm certain protocol would have you in scholar mode before you could be raised to priestess. I can understand the attraction! Tell me what you're thinking of doing (off forum, lol)
Try searching for covens or other organisations in your area. They'll be able to train you up or lead you in the right direction if necessary.
Usually one joins a coven and works their way up through the levels.. to being a High Priestess is the highest level usually runs a coven.
It's not something one can just decide they are.
It's even harder for solitaries.
Wicca is Federally recognized religion. The problem is most Covens are not federally recognized.. This is an odd situation but you can find out the details if you wish to.
Maybe doing a bit of research into what you are getting yourself into would be good too
Why the need to be a high priestess ?....you do seem rather vague about what it is you are drawn to.
if ur after becoming A high priestess your first need is time and second need learning and ur third is a coven/group that will teach you
I would say, find your spiritual path FIRST. Priestess is a title, not a path. You have to find what fits best for you.
After you've found yourself, You can work up to it then, whatever the title may be.
I would say that a woman can become a High Priestess, if She cultivates the most apricieted qualities in her persona, and those are, a robust upper part, athletic figure, and robust butt.
That will ensure her success, wether she chooses a spiritual path, or any phisical activity.
It requires much study.....every High Priestness I know and this is true also carries the title of Rev. when I asked why...they wink and say you get a way with a little bit more. My deceased Wicca teacher was a Shaman, wiccan, Revenand and a high priestess. Hopefully you will find one who will give you the answers you so well sought to find.
I beleive that this idea of a High Priestess is more of a mith than anything, a fairy tail, a thing of old.
Where can you acomplish such ambition these days? In this modern industrialised era?
It seems varrious groups have a variety of requirements to receive the title "high priestess" so I would say it would depend on a chosen path, and the group you choose to associate with.
Those who are meant for the Craft "willl find it" As for your question I think that it depends on if you want to become a self initiated one or not. To be anitiated by a Coven you would have to work your way up and study and show sincerity. Also there are different degrees of initiation. I suggest getting the Witches Bible and reading it or a Book calld The Spiral dance. Then after having read those you may know more as to what and how it is you wish to do... Good Luck and Blssed BE
well I think first you need to find what path of religion or spiritual path you want to believe and follow first before trying tobe anything else.
I mean even in the Masons and Oddfellows, Shriners etc.. have high priestess in some of their erganizations so there are many things out there that has what your talking about
so maybe doing a search and talking to people first will help you much better in what iit is your wanting. :)
A HP for male or female follows a set a protocols and roles set worth within the ritual that they are doing. They have the respect of those other member that are also taking part in that ritual. It has nothing to do with levels for that is part of a tradition and not all wiccans/witches follow a tradition. And guess what? If you are a solitary witch you can also call yourself a HP. You're in charge of the whole ritual right? Silly maybe but true. Don't be caught playing the title game. Its not much of a big deal. If you have close group you even take turns!
It all depends on your religion and who follows who. You can call yourself a high priestess if you really want to, or you can find a legit orginization and getherings and slowly move up the ranks to become more then just a follower and believe to be something more.
I know in Shinto, you have the Kannushi and the Guuji. Kannushi are the Priests and the Guuji is the Chief Priest.
Not sure if they have female counter parts, but I believe they might. I know they have shrine maidens.
A High Priestess is a no joke title and shouldn't be taken lightly or played around with. Your taking the mantle of great faith and conviction in your beliefs. If you take this title on, you need to be devoute in your belief and cannot have doubts in your love for the faith.
Any doubt in it could cause a serious back lash of karma or hate from the deity(s) you serve and in this, making your life a lot harder then it should be.

U are not even sure what a high priestess does. My coven has a high priestess and she leads our group meetings as well as leads our rituals. For her to have attained this position she had to go through intense training to demonstrate her ability and knowledge to wicca
" A path of higher spiritual involvement"...
Just my opinion, but it sounds as if you really have no chosen path at the moment.
You mentioned wicca, yet as some have pointed out.. depending on what tradition you follow.. the title of HP could mean one of higher learning or experience, or it could mean nothing at all.
I am a solitary eclectic witch and to me the title of HP is nothing more than a label. Who's to judge me or label me besides my God/dess?.. noone.
Perhaps the spiritual pull you feel is simply to find your path. Learn as much as you can.. and realize you'll never know everything. Become closer to your Deity and your Higher Self, and if you still feel the need for higher spiritual involvement.. volunteer, mentor, teach what you've learned..without the need for labels. That in itself is spiritually rewarding. ;)
15000 exp and at least 5 levels of cleric
:P
Or if you're referring to a high priestess of a particular religion, one would have to suggest that each religion is different and that what makes a high priestess in the CoS might be very different from what makes a high priestess in the Golden Dawn or the Kepharu.
it really depends on what you becomeing a high priestess of....it comes with experiance, knowledge, and your personal level of spirituality. i beleave that if you feel you are ready to take the step then in your own way you already are a high priestess....

I know that I am being trained to be a high priestess... That is one of the Druid religion.... I am just beginning myself, but I do know it takes lots of training and dedication, and time.... Now thats in my religion.... others I couldnt say...
i personally find that titles and labels tend to get in the way, seems everone wants a title of recognition now days,i find that most true practioners of the arts are solitary now days and their training is life itself,i think some of the pagan comunities make profit on having such classes to become a high priest(ess) and feel that learning in it's truest form should be free, but then again these are just my thoughts.
Also I would ask hight preistess of what.
And from what I know it takes years of learning and practicing whatever art one is into and why does their have to be a title.
my opinion of course, but everyone nowadays always has to have to have some huge, title, supreme commander of the universe or whatever.Rank seems a way to get attention or prove one's worth..isn't action and deeds the way one proves worth or abilities.
It can't be said enough, research, research, research. You must know which path you wish to follow, who your particular gods/goddess are and if you want to teach.
The high priestess of a coven has EARNED that title. It's not something to be taken lightly. I've been through the ranks, educated myself, asked questions and when the time was right, initialized the ritual to become a high priestess. According to my belief system I am now qualified to start and lead my own coven. But part of that is educating my coven members. I have a responsibility to them. I also have a responsibility to my chosen god and goddess. I "answer" only to them, but it's quite the responsibility. It's my job to set an example, so when I mess up..ee gads.
To become a high prestess you must first serve under a master of the skill you preffer to practice in to become a high priestess. You will train intell your master feels your ready. Then you most help and show good grace of your position for many many years then finaly when you can pass the test of your elders you can become a high priestess.
well it depends. you can take the easy way and become a member of the ULC(Universal Life Church) and get ordained there. Or you can find a member of the wicca religion (and by the it is a organized religion) or whatever religion u r apart of and get information from then and try to find local covens
There is much information online about this topic. As far as I know, it isn't really complicated, and after you "qualify" you are able to perform marriages legally!
Study, learn listen . This must be done to lead others in spiritual learning. Sit in with others first and read as much as you can. Do not hurry it.
well in my opinion you need to be astudent before you can become anything, learn and study and find what it is that you yourself are interested in and drawn to then you would beready for a higher step.
enough is enuff love ill make you a high priestess!
ok you one ----go about your high---stuff.
I would study and figure out what my spiritual interest and path are first. An HP is someone who has gone through Levels/Degrees of Learning. Read about covens and how they work. reach out to your Pagan community and attend events, meet people and through that you will learn. Some covens have a outer Teaching Circles. Through that you will learn . You cant just join a coven, like joining a church or other group. You are picked through like mind , compatibility among all members ETC. Through a Teaching Circle your Teachers may/could help you find the coven, you might fit in. But still even after you've found a group you still would have to study for a "Year And A Day" Then you will be initiated to The First Degree. We have done both. Been Solitary Witch and A part of a Coven 3 times( different ones) plus the teaching circle I mentioned. Both are good . Being A Solitary is no Better or Special than one that is in a Coven. Both ways take several years before Earning The title of a HP.
Using my own organization as an example, for one to be given such a title, they must know as much as possible about their faith, history of and the origins of our religion, and be an out-standing member of our Temple. They must be a leader, and know how to deal with, and at times, administer punishment, for trouble makers and problems that arise.
Hmmm... this one's out of my hands there arn't many organisations or sects that have this title nowaday's. But good luck anyway.
i think as long as you know about wicca you can make your self A high priestess, just by makeing your own coven, and having members follow your coven
well I feel you should first know what it is you want and what you believe in beforetrying to be a presistess or any thing else is my opinion.
you should be able to run, train and operate your coven, and have viable results in everything you want.
The training for a common witch takes 7 years at least. So if you wanted to elevate yourself in that, then you are looking at 10 years of involvement in one coven.
Why the sudden need to want to be a High Preistess? And of what ? With most religions followings that title only comes with earning it. It is not something that is just handed to you. You must prove you are worthy of it. You must have the knowledge, the leadership and the trust of the coven, and that comes with many years. Try researching for what you want first.
Since you don't appear to be sure exactly what's pulling you in this direction, could it be that you're actually wanting to be in a position of power to help others, not necessarily a HP but someone who is regarded as a spiritual/moral leader instead?
You may heard the term High Priestess associated with Wicca. In British Traditonal Wicca, covens have a priest and priestess.
You should explore Wicca further by checking out Witchvox.com before you decide to become a member of its "clergy".
I am not sure of any other religons that may have the term High Priestess so I can't speak to them.
I am enrolled in the College of Sacred Mist through Workingwitches.com. I studying to be a Wiccan Priest 1st Degree. I chose the school because they are non-profit and are associated with people I respect in the pagan community like Janet Farrar.
If you have anymore questions about, you PM me.
I agree with pepper's post, it explains it well. These things take time and dedication to prove your a worthwhile leader. So find a coven that suits you and start working towards your goal.
The best thing for you to do is find a coven near you that you can join. They can teach you about that and many other things.
at the age of 18 i am a high priestess in my covern, it was years of studdy and training,
Perhaps what you want is to dedicate your life to something spiritual, but in order to do so you must find the spiritual path you wish to pursue. Then you must research it, find others who are involved in it, learn about it...things will fall into place.
I am not a wiccan priest. I have been part of an coven of true friends and a more "church like" coven. I am solitary now... military sort of messes with that one. I have read and seen a website for higher witch learning in England but never followed up on it. And since lost the website. Viel Gluck.
i think there is alot here for thought and i will be back to post when i have a good answer
try going to witchvox.com and finding a coven in your area.
honestly you should try to figure which goddess calls you
finding where her origins comes from would help you greatly.Id say till you know where she came from you wont find that position available
i agree with most of the posts here, i have no idea of what you want to become a high priestess of, i have studied so many religions i can't remember them all but after years i have found my path, and it takes years of study to become a true high priest/ess. i have studied for about 8 years and it will be many more before i earn that title.
another question you are faced with what makes you want to become a high priest/tess
is it a fad, is it a yurning you have. something you think would be cool to say to people
there are many things that you need to answer with in yourself
Firstly, you will need to find a Coven to accept you as a probationer and who will initiate you. Once you are initiated as a 1* Witch you will be expected to take part in all the Coven's rituals, you will be expected to complete any training or work that the Coven expects their 1* Witches to complete - this can be something as simple as copying the Book of Shadows and learning certain parts in a ritual to more involved training programmes that some groups have. Again its worth making a note of this and asking the High Priestess or High Priest of the Coven about what will be expected after initiation prior to joining! Once you have done everything expected from you as a 1* and usually after a minimum of a year and day, you can then approach the Coven Leaders and ask them if they will consider you for 2*. Each group will have different criteria in regards to what they expect a candidate for 2* to fulfill and one of the qualities for 2* usually will be to take a more active role in training new members of the group or even to run a group of your own! In some groups you will get the title of High Priestess or High Priest at the 2* initiation, but personally I think that the title should be reserved for those actually running a group or at the very least doing training with newcomers! (Otherwise the title is pretty pointless!!!).
The 3* initiation is usually only given to people who have hived off from their original Coven to start a group of their own successfully.
my guess is to find a coven in your area and go from there
there are 3 degrees in a coven,
1st degree is your basics before you can join a coven
2nd degree will make you a priest or priesstess
3rd degree will make you a high priest or priesstes.
i have completed my first and am working through my second, if you would like information on what you must know for each degree (every coven vearies) i am more than happy to help
Very well said xXShadowDravenXx
It is not something that you just walk into and are automatically a high preistess it comes with time trust and learning and studying.
