Can anyone explaine to me what the Day of Reckoning A.K.A. Apocalypse is?

It explains it alot better than I could.

The day of reckoning ...
... I reckon I'll be 50!
O.o
I'm assuming that you could find many, many answers. It changes from culture to culture and ever more in the subdivisions of these cultures.
I do not want to appear mean here but did you consider a wiki or google search prior to starting this thread? There are a great many resources available out there. You might have started it off like " In Christian eschatology, the Last Judgment or Day of the Lord is the judgment by Jesus Christ of every human who ever lived. It will take place after the resurrection of the dead and the Second Coming (Revelation 20:12–15)."
Something like this might have been a useful take off point for a discussion. This was BTW a direct quote from Wikipedia (all rights reserved blah blah blah).
Just a friendly reminder from your neighborhood spid...err, Bard...haha
Didn't a few of these "last days" already happen? They come and go and then what? The guy miss calculates or G_d changes his mind? I mean really. When your time comes, it comes. If the whole world goes then you will never know it. You'll be dead. Its only a waste of time with "what ifs" and only a level above watching info commercials!
How many are there? Count the number of societies on this planet. Most likely every single one has an "end."
I believe it was a movie with Martin Sheen? Sad attempt at a joke.
The Apocolypse, Day of Reckoning, or End of Days, is simply the end of the world. Every culture with a creation story should have an Apocolyptic story. It helps divine a reason as to why the human race might be snuffed out for no apparent reason.
Many ideas are given for this across almost all cultures of the world, but in the Christian term of 'Tribulation' is probably most relevant to this discussion.
The theory goes that there will be a period of seven years in which specific events will occur, supposedly in sequence.
There are many and the Rapturist section of fundamentalist Christianity suppose that we are in the midst of these very stages of the 'End Times'.
They attribute the false prophet and the rise of the one-world religion to be Bin Laden and the theosophy of Al Qeda.
The beginning of the war in Iraq and it's various implicatory factors upon the world, is corresponded to the rise of Babylon, the seven seals and the seven trumpets.
The midpoint see's the destruction of the one-world religion. The mark of the beast upon humanity and the scattering of the Jews back into the desert.
These events have not yet happened, but the threats are there from the Arab world o wipe Isreal off the map.
The second half of those seven years is the big finale. Destruction of Babylon, the battle of Armageddon with the worlds armies and the final banishment of Satan and the Antichrist.
Then comes Christ and one thousand years of peace, before yet another final battle to end all 'Evil' and usher in a new Heaven upon Earth.
So they say.
What I find rather odd about the entire "Christian" story of Apocolypse is that it is attributed to "Christians". Jesus, the proposed Anointed One, never claimed these happenings. This was reserved for "John", of which we're not even sure he was the disciple.
My question, then, is regarding those people who believe in the description as layed down by John. Can they be deemed Christians?
The apocolypse is supposedly some date in the future when the world as we know it will come to an end. I am personally..not gonna hold my breath waiting.
it is suppose to be the day that jesus returns to the earth, all the dead and living are to face judgement for there sins and life workings on this day....but i think its just something made up to scare people into complying with the church
I don't think the apocalypse is going to be as chaotic/fiery/blah blah blah as I've been told before. It will just end... and that's that.
Wolfsbohne,
This thread is not directed as an examination of Christianity in the manner which you have just attempted to drive it towards.
Please keep away from attacking religions.
Thank you.
It is also believed that the date has not been set as yet, and when the 'word' does come, it will come via an angel and be personified through a dream.
But first the entire Jewish race must return to Israel.
thats the hub.................if it happens in my lifetime I'll hide my daughter. lol
All apologies Stabb. I suppose I should have gone in a different direction with that one, and tried not to sound so offensive. My intent wasn't attack.
My point being, can we consider the valididty of this Apocolyptic story because it came from an exceptionally questionable source.
Christians are Christians because they study and follow the teachings of Jesus, the Anointed One. This story, however, comes from someone who was imprisoned on an island and its questionable if he was truly the first disciple - as the Church assumed.
I suppose the question should have been, should Christians actually believe in the Apocolypse?
I understand the question asked WHAT is the Apocolypse, not who came up with it, but the source of that story should also be examined as an answer.
If i totally ignore all religion for a moment ang go for a purely scientific point of view you could have 5 billion years AD when the sun turns into a red giant and the earth gets toasted.
Hopefully the humas species will have moved on by then LOL
Wow, Stabb, as per usual, I am utterly impressed by your answer (scholarly show-off!).
To add my two cents, just for the sake of reading a perspective on this subject -- grab a Bible and flip through Revelations. Pick excerpts here and there and allow yourslef to give them definition. You may find that there are common generalities observed in Christianity and a slew of other religions.
Keep in mind, much of "the written word" is comprised of stories... Stories meant to be used as a guide to leading a certain lifestyle. Death/Destruction/Apocalypse can mean rebirth in other cultures. In other words, look to yourself for a definition that makes sense to you -- hell, let us know what you come up with! We all see things differently.
the book of the apocalypse is as valid as the book of Daniel... there are many similar passages in both books, and even if we don't know which John wrote, there is a big possibility that was John the beloved disciple...
the best way to know if God really inspired the bible, is trough prophecies... something told before it happens, and believe that the bible has lots of prophecies, and the book of the apocalypse is full of them...
it prophecy's the rapture, an event were Jesus and the angels of God come to earth and, in a blink of an eye, all the faithful believers disappear... also prophecy's the coming of the anti-christ, and the false prophet... the 7 years of destruction, divided in 3,5 years of peace and 3,5 years of furious annihilation... were dies 2/3 of world population before the second coming of Christ (note: the second coming is not the same event as the rapture, in the rapture no one can see Jesus, and in the second coming everyone shall see it)...
the best detail about that prophecy, is that before the seven years starts, the Jews will built for the third time, the temple of King Solomon in Israel (so, Israel is the clock of God ^^)... now, the Armageddon is a world war against Israel, just before the second coming, after that, Jesus comes and it will establish 1000 years of peace, were satan is imprisoned in an abyss... then comes the final war between good and evil...
this is a very extensive subject to be put in few words...
but one of the best things written there, is that, after many of us have seen this things happen, will still continue to believe that God does not exist, so, no matter what it happens, if any of you do not want to believe, nothing is going to change that... remember, the rapture is written at 2000 years ago... when that happens, millions of people will disappear... and i tell unto thee, you will not believe in the bible, you will prefer to believe in nonsenses of the modern society... uhhh, aliens took them away...
Well, Malakh, I will agree to disagree. I find man to be completely flawed. We can barely get a grocery list correct -- I hardly believe the accuracy of the "prophets". I suppose this is where the discussion of "faith" comes into play.
Still, like the X-Files -- The truth is out there... Sadly, I think society and organized religion keep a filmy veil that hides these truths and leaves us with nothing more than more questions.
BillyTheJust made a great point -- about how many "ends" have come and gone? How many of you guys got all wacky about Y2K? then went to work the next day not a bit more enlightened? How many of you considered buying back Nikes and castrating yourself to become one with that comet? Me? I'd stay far away from the Kool Aid.
When does the Apocalypse happen? When your EKG flatlines.
Yes, but you will get varied opinions on this subject. the scope of it is quite large. If you want specific answers to your question, you will have to rely on your own research for the answers you're looking for.
I just hope out of all the versions out there, religious, mythical, and possible scientific, its going to be Ragnarok. The vikings had the right idea and Valhalla sounds like a cool place to hang out until it happens.
To answer the question of the thread, my advice just to throw a date out into the open, would be to take a look at the Mayan calender and compare it with the Gregorian calender...2012...Or so is rumored...But then again, we will see.
This is NOT a be all end all answer by any means.
To me its religious mumbo jumbo, another way to make the flock toe the line and do what they are told to do. There is no Armageddon or apocalypse in my opinion, it is going on every day.
On point and back on topic. What is the Apocalypse? A definition is as a term applied to the disclosure to certain privileged persons of something hidden from the majority of humankind. So there is your answer.
Simple definition, but as you can see many people do not see the trees for the forest. You asked a simple question and there is your simple answer.
I am not sure but i always thought that the apocalypse was when good and evil were going to battle each other and that would cause the end of the world, personally i do not care about the apocalypse because the world will still be here when im dead so why worry about it...
Simplicity is good when that is what the question asks for. One could ask "What is an amoeba" to which another could answer "a single celled organism". But it wouldn't be much fun if there wasn't further exploration. There are several single celled organisms in our world. The question here asked for an explanation of the Day of Reckoning or Apocalypse. Determining the origin of the story, the validity thereof, and the story itself is all part and parcel of the explanation.
I dont really think that day will come. I believe that religions have profited with this situation to keep the people afraid. Through history this has been the way the religious leaders have kept people acting the way they want, donating as much as they have, waiting for the day to come, where all the goods will be taken... and the baddies will be left.
hello, i looked up your question on the internet and i found this very interesting for me so id share with you all if your interested ..
What is the Apocalypse ?
My wife's family are devout Jehova's Witnesses.
Being a curious fellow, I researched the orgins of this religion and found that the founder created it in the US in the 1800's and his primary "hook" was that he was predicting the "end of times."
Ha! The day passed, and no end. He and several other church leaders predicted dates for the end of the world, but none of them were right.
Now they got smart, and stated that the "end is near." Got to give them credit for shifting their approach.
Either way, something big needs to happen for the end. Nukes from all of the countries, mondo-meteor impact, or something of the like.
Other than that, here we are, and here we stay.
As to the day of reckoning/apocalypse, traditionally it is described under certain religious traditions to be the day that the physical world ends, and people are judged according to their thoughts and actions, before being relegated to one of several possible destinations.
And no, I don't believe in that.
I highly doubt that an Apocalypse will occur in the sense of books such as the Bible or the Kuran, etc.
I personally believe that it is humans that will cause an apocalyptical event, such as a world war.
However, the world we live on too can and has also created its own Apocalypses in the past. These were in the form of earthquakes, volcanic erruptions, tsunamis, hurricanes, floods, global warming, increases in carbon dioxide levels, severe temperature changes which spawned drouts and famine, tectonic plate actions, magnetic pole reversals, large-scale methane thaws and ignition and asteroid impacts from outer space, etc. etc.!
I'd say it is difficult to predict when it will happen. The Mayans may have figured something out about how the world works, so we merely need to wait until the end of 2012 [5 years from now] to find out what they really know. :)
to follow on from what Jens said: I figure it might be next week and those idiots turning on the Great Hadron Collider.
..
(Google it, it's terrifying!)
It is supposed to be end of the world when god come back to earth and judges the living and the dead.
Do we really know the actually date and time of this so called 'Apocalypse' ? I know it will happen but no one really, truly knows when. But i'm sure if you research it on line, you will find much more information.
http://www.apocalypse2012.com/
No one knows the exact time or date but God. That was written in the Koran and the Bible. We'll know when it happens.
i believe thier are higher forces at work in the cosmos. i will not give in to histeria of doomsday. i believe that the more poeple who succume to the belief that the end of days are here, the more thier power of intention will bring it about. i don't know if we have reached critical mass o bring it about, but i hope my keeping a positive mind will some how lessen the effects in my little corner of the world.
i also have faith. i believe in shambala. love is the key.
I like the,The end of theories,but I don't worry about it.
We'll die anyway,so why worry?
Prevent it,heh yeah and how?
They're all theories and the dates have been always changing, the most popular one was that in the year 2000 the world would end,yet we're still here -_-
I guess the world ends differently for every individual, because when we die,the world ends for us.
The world is supposed to end when im 115. which is 2106..
98 years from now at least.
I will hopefully be dead. ^_^
but Im sure Ill see the world collapse.
The apocolypse is supposedly some date in the future when the world as we know it will come to an end, yet the exact date? I do not think anyone knows or will be around when it does come . I do not think I will be hehee I hope not hope to be gone by then.
I have no idea how to explain the reckoning other than it is supposed to be the time of judgement for all. The world will end and we will (supposedly stand before god and be judged) However I am a Wiccan so it matters not to me.
The revealing of the end of days...
"When it is evening, ye say, it will be fair weather: for the sky is red and lowering. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?" Mathew 16: 2-3
The world will be here long after we become extinct. But if it is destroyed it will be by us.
My opinion is dont worry about no silly Apocalypse. I am thinking more along the lines as no more mint ice cream at the diniing facility. *shudder Gives me goose bumps.
people been saying the world is going to end for year and still has not. i would not worry to much about when it end for you cant do anything to stop it from happening so just enjoy life as much as you can.
The Mayan Culture predicted the world will end December 21, 2012, yet the ancient Mayan society has mysteriously diappeared...
To further examine this date, we must look to the stars... On the winter solstice in 2012, the sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way for the first time in about 26,000 years. This means that "whatever energy typically streams to Earth from the center of the Milky Way will indeed be disrupted on December 21, 2012 at 11:11 p.m. Universal Time.
Apocalypse...Shnapocalypse.....Hah!What a laugh......Humans will certainly have a great war in some time......Most of us will be killed, some hopefully will survive.....Wars happen all the time....throughout history there has been many great wars....and in the future this will continue.....All we can hope is that none of the countries will do anything drastic such as using a nuke...
well if we look back in history our cultures are all based on wars being fought and won and lost so it is evident that there may be another major war or something that will happen.
i guess it would depend on who you ask, some say it is to be the last battle as in the above post ww3 , some say it will be good vs evil i mean it realy depends and yes if you had done a google search you have found many answers.
The word apocalypse in Greek means "unveiling". In John's apocalypse, the book of Revelation, he refers to the "unveiling" or "revelation" of Jesus Christ as Messiah. This term has been downgraded in common usage to refer to the end of the world. But it is more accurate to interpret the term "end of the world", as we see in the King James Version of the Bible, as the "end of the age". The word translated as "world" is actually the Greek word "eon" or "age".
The eschatological pictures of the end of the age in the later books of the Old Testament were images of the judgment of the wicked, as well as the resurrection and glorification of those who were given righteousness before God. The dead are seen in the book of Job and in some of the Psalms as being in Sheol, awaiting the final judgment. The wicked will then be consigned to eternal torment in the fires of Gehinnom, or the Lake of Fire mentioned in Revelation [51] [52] [53] [54] [55].
The New Testament letters written by the Apostle Paul expand on this theme of the judgment of the wicked, and the glorification of those who belong to Christ or Messiah. In his letters to the Corinthians and the Thessalonians Paul expounds further on the destiny of the righteous. He speaks of the simultaneous resurrection and rapture of those who are in Christ, (or Messiah). This is a combined apocalyptic event that comes at the end of this age and before the coming Millennium.
Christianity had a Millennial expectation for glorification of the righteous from the time it emerged from Judaism and spread out into the world in the first century. The poetic and prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible, particularly in Isaiah, were rich in Millennial imagery. The New Testament Congregation after Pentecost carried on with this theme. During his imprisonment by the Romans on the Island of Patmos, John described the visions he experienced, writing the Book of Revelation. Revelation chapter 20 contains several reference to a thousand year reign of Christ/Messiah upon this earth.
Throughout Church history, the kings and princes of Europe had traditionally viewed with extreme disfavor the idea of a judgment at the end of this age and a Millennium to follow. King Henry VIII was very angry when he heard that his subjects were reading smuggled copies of William Tyndale's New Testament. Upon hearing that they were discussing the judgment at the end of the age, he flew into a rage. Archibishop Wolsey was summoned and questioned about this matter. A series of events then led to William Tyndale being hunted down, captured, condemned, and burned at the stake.
Preaching or teaching on end time apocalytic themes in the "Three Self" government church in China is strictly forbidden.
Modern Christian movements in the 18th and 19th Centuries were characterized by a rise of Millennialism. Christian Apocalyptic eschatology was a continuation of the same two themes referred to throughout all of scripture as "this age" and "the age to come". Evangelicals have been in the forefront in rediscovering and popularizing the biblical prophecy of a major confrontation between good and evil at the end of this age, a coming Millennium to follow, and a final confrontation whereby the wicked are judged, the righteous are rewarded and the beginning of Eternity is viewed.
Most evangelicals have been taught a form of Millennialism known as Dispensationalism, which arose in the 19th century. Dispensationalism sees separate destinies for the Church and Israel. Its concept of a special Pre Tribulation Rapture of the Church has become extremely popular. This is the central thesis of the Left Behind books and films. Recently, however, Dispensationalism has been undergoing some opposition from those who teach and embrace what is termed Traditional Millennialism. Prominent among them are those who hold to a Post Tribulation Rapture.
One of the most complete exegetical works on the meaning of the Book of Revelation was written by Emanuel Swedenborg called the Apocalypse Revealed, first published in two volumes in Amsterdam in 1766. A more current book, utilizing the literal method of interpretation, is "The Revelation Record" by Henry M. Morris ©1985; Tyndale House Inc. and Creation Life Publishers.
The Apocalypse is often referenced to the Book of Revelations in the New Testament and in the Book of Daniel in the Old Testament.
Apocalyptic Literature comes about in western culture during a major change in numerical years - like each milennia and during bad times.
Many think that John who wrote Revelations was wriiting a coded message to the seven addressed churches telling the members to hang in there under Nero's oppression.
I would reckon that the book has risen in popularity because of the recent transtion to the next milennium and the Cold War.
Very good *Pepper* I have always had a fascination with the Book of Revelations ...The Apocalypse or End Times- has been predicted in every century in at least recorded history...
I don't believe in an apocalypse happening with fire and brimstone, oceans turning to blood etc.
To me they describe your average war anyway. So to me Apocalypse would be more a war to end all wars.
It is humans that will wipe out humans.
There are scores of books on the subject and tons of websites devoted to it. Do a simple google search on the apocalypse or day of reckoning, and you will find what you are seeking.
Most cultures believe that the apocalypse will come on December 12, 2012
Apocalypse aka The End of the world.
Which is already happening.
Throw another piece of garbage on the ground!
Woo! Destroy the world!
Everyday, something we do tears up a piece of Mother Earth.
I am not so sure there is going to be an Apocalypse. I have heard it has to do with the Maian Calender ending in 2012...
in early life death other then a person dying didn't mean death
it mean a change.
Death in prophecy and or things of that nature actually meant that the person in question would under go major life changes, such as being rich then falling into homelessness
or someone who is in a ceo job position losing it.
so majority of the apocalyptic theories is mostly speaking from like Nostradamus a major change in the world
The theory of Apocalypse is, in my opinion, directly attributed to the stories in the Bible and Koran.
I personally feel that instead of the world ending we could have something similar to what the dinosaurs went through or cause the world to fall apart on its own. With the state that our environment is now. It wouldn't be too surprising if that would cause the world to end. It all comes down to the people taking care of what they have already.
It is many different things to many people...
Like you said..the day of reckoning when sinners would be punished and good would be brought up to heaven. The end of time when everything in the world ends.
Depends on your view whether scientific or religous.
This is supposed to be when the world ends. I would hope that this prediction does not come true
It most commonly came from the Mian calander which is on December 12, 2012 (The day of the "Apocalypse"). What will happen is all the planets will allign with all the planet of the 2 closest galaxies and a huge gravitational force will cause massive geological events. By then the population will be 9,000,000,000. After December 12, 2012, the population will go from about 9,000,000,000 to about 200,000,000. Thats 8,800,000,000 people killed. The geological events will be things such as earthquakes, tornados, huricanes, tsunomies, etc. The Mian calender is the only calender to never be wrong, even after thousands of years. Mians were the fisrt to know how the solar system revolved and how things will end up (planet wise). Don't disregard this. This is how the whole "Apocalyse" thing was ever brought up. "The end of the world as we know it". Half the planets land will be gone and under water and in rubel, and 8,800,000,000 people will die.
It will probably happen but not anytime soon.
Some meteor or something will crash into earth and then we'll all die.
First the apocalypse is in most major religions, go figure. It can also be called "end of days" not the schwarzeneggar movie. But, esentially there will another great battle in the heavens, traditional good versus evil, however in this one the archangel Michael does not beat lucifer and cast him out...
Instead the legion is set loose, so to speak, the legion consists of every slain martiered souls, and their only request of God is to have their deaths avenged on the living.
End result read...
revelation, book of Job and genisis too...
repent all ye sinners, oh one more thing for all us vampyres that's us...
The apocalypse would be the end of the world, and all life that exists upon it. Even though all life will end in around a billion years, when apparently our sun will become a blue dwarf. -not before expanding and oblitorating the first two planets it our solar system.
I figure it doesn't matter what day it is.
Because either you'll die that day..
or you'll die some other way. Either way you're going to die. *shrug*
noo, that made no sense. I suck
*Two post above me* Yes that did make sense. And you are right. No point in worrying about it. Especially when we are all going to die eventually anyways. The apocolypse is the end of the world. The death and destruction of all living forms on this planet.
It may as well be on my birthday for the many dates already thrown down on the table. Everyone seems to thrive on a level of underlying doom that could come at any time and what will happen to them when it does. When both science and religion are coming up with quasi-similar (lol) doomsday announcements, it makes you wonder; is it mass hysteria or natural order?
It's supposedly the day when the world will end. It's really as simple as that.
Every culture has it's own views or theories on it.
I just dont believe it will happen in our lifetime as we have been through alot of so called world day ending days and guess what OH we are still here lol
If the one thing that keeps me balanced in this world was to be takin from me, then I would be the Apocolypse cuz she wouldnt be here to stop me..... so, if she dies, thats the Day it happens ;) there is no date, no one knows when it will be.
The apocalypse is ever coming end of the world, which has been predicted from the beginning of time..
I would have to agree with the statement that Distortion made above. It depends on what your belief is on it.
I think the most talked about 'day of reconing' aside from the year 2000 with Y2K and whatnot, is the supposed end of the world in 2012 with the Mayan calender and whatnot.
The apocalypse date changes every several years. Or it seems there is an upcoming apocalypse every year. When it happens it will happen and no one will see it coming
maybe iy will be world war thing in the end the only thing thats gonna kill mankind is man.
Not true. If mankind manages to stay around for say ... a billion years or so, and still haven't managed to find a new planet to inhabit, they'll more than likely be destroyed when the sun reaches near the end of it's life cycle, expands to a Red Giant thus engulfing the first two planets in the solar system and making life on earth virtually uninhabitable.
Thier isnt really a right or a wrong answer to your question. It mainly depends on the religion and the personality of the person. An apocalypse could mean something to one person and something completely different to another. It vary's.
Not that I can explain it to you I just had a giggle when I read the thread. Why? In our local paper some guy once every two or three months says the apocalypse is coming on such a such date and time of course he has been wrong every single time.
What about the whole crystal skulls 'idea'
According to the ancient Mayans they pointed to a specific date: 21 December 2012. And that it woold be caused by man.
(Which i'm thinking with the fuel crisis going on, and only getting worse...this isn't that hard to imagine. What lengths would countries go to, to attain the last of the fuel?)
The Mayans also said that this era, the fifth era would be the last, suggesting that whatever destruction happens it will destroy the planet...
Anyone else interested in the Crystal Skull idea?
im thinking it will come in 2012 when the myan calender ends. they got help from the aliens so they gotta know something. but they no longer around to tell us.
Apocalypse. Mmm. Only happen when you stop your biological life and enter into the next one. Is a change of plane that every creature in earth have to go thru.
Ishta -
Humanity has become more aware of the fuel crisis and towards finding alternative fuel sources. Therefore I don't think it's too far off until petrol becomes obsolete.
Whos to say when the apocolyse is gonna as to what it is well many christain belive its the day when cristan god comes to judge people for thei sins and rid the world of sinner their are many poeple who belive this i personally feel that many of these things have been predicted in the mayan calender i think it was the date of december 2012 hope this help
