I know this is Vampire Rave, but i must ask, just like the question pertaining to the existance of vampires, how much proof is out there pertaining to Lyncanthropes and their shifts during the full moon?

Let us begin with Wikipedia shall we?...

"Werewolves, also known as lycanthropes, are mythological or folkloric people with the ability to shapeshift into a wolf or wolflike creature, either purposely, by using magic, or after being placed under a curse.

The medieval chronicler Gervase of Tilbury associated the transformation with the appearance of the full moon; however, there is evidence that the association existed among the Ancient Greeks, appearing in the writings of Petronius. This concept was rarely associated with the werewolf until the idea was picked up by fiction writers."

I'll look into some other sources but for now it would seem that there is SOME historical proof pertaining to Lyncanthropes and their shifts during the full moon...:)

I have heard many on the internet, including this site, who say they are Lycan, but I've never seen anyone in person, so I'm not sure what to believe.

(Oh man, I wonder if people think this way when I say that I am a real vampire...)

In Northern lands of Europe, there lived the followers of Odin, the Teutonic invaders called Vikings. Some of these Vikings were called berserkirs, they wore the skins of wolves when they went into war, and when they hunted. Wearing animal skins gave the wearer a feeling of strong identification, and Odin was a shapeshifter himself. The berserkirs were fierce and deadly worriors.
The documents written by those ,unfortunatly being in the path of the Vikings version of manifest destiny, the monks who inhabited Ireland, recorded the visits in their journals.

I don’t think there is any real proof. I believe that werewolves like vampires are just good fantasy. I’m afraid that characters in stories are as real as they will ever be.

I agree with Gaius. I don't think there is any real proof for the existence of werewolves, it's the people and their imagination or cultural beliefs that keeps the lore alive.

Much like the 100 other threads about this topic...there is no such ability.Lycan is and was made up for the movie Underworld. No one can change or shapeshift into a werwolf.Lycanthropy is a checmical imbalance in the brain, making a person "think/believe" they can and are a werewolf. If you think you actually can tirn into one during a full moon...video tape it...with no tricks...and show me...and prove me wrong.A full moon does affect me...but it does most everything on earth at that time.

In my opinion, anything is possible until proven otherwise, but Lycanthropy is based on ancient warriors that donned wolf skins known as the ulfheobar or ulfhedinn (wolf coats) and they were known for their savagery and reckliness in battle. Their acts in battle created many of the myths.

again and again and again... this is what i think... America is so full of fantasy, that you guys think that every thing above normal is fantasy... i don't know if in the U.S. exist real vampires and werewolf's, probably not... dunno... but i know for sure that here in Europe they surely are alive and they are supernatural beings (not special, just above normal, nothing else)

and anyone wants an historical document?

this is just a passage saying that metamorphosis is indeed possible...

Daniel 4:31 "While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, [saying], O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken: The kingdom is departed from thee:
32 and thou shalt be driven from men; and they dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field; thou shalt be made to eat grass as oxen; and seven times shall pass over thee; until thou know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.
33 The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hair was grown like eagles' [feathers], and his nails like birds' [claws].
34 And at the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the Most High, and I praised and honored him that liveth for ever; for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom from generation to generation.
35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?"

but, every thing above our normal and limited comprehension is just good fantasy, right?

Does a real-life vampyre in this day and age turn into a bat and fly away? Or do their faces turn as portrayed in Buffy into that of a demon? Of course not, but vampires do exist in the world around us. So do "lycans", as coined in the movie Underworld, and a term which I have no problems with.

I myself am more lycan than vampyric, my personal bloodlust stemming from the need for the hunt. What all does this entail? I have a neverending desire for nearly raw meat. The thrill of the hunt, especially when the hunt is of a sexual nature, is the ultimate adrenaline rush (a few women here will probably slap me for saying that, but unless you are one, you just don't get it). My moods are inexplicably tied to the moon and the time of year. I have a wanderlust that is only ever momentarily slaked. I have small personal habits and even physical features (mostly hairgrowth) that is reminiscient of a wolf, as well as a natural enmity with all domesticated felines.

No, I don't change every full moon into a wolf, nor do I lose control and start slaughtering all living things wholesale. But I am a lupine being, all the same. Those who don't believe only hold that opinion because they themselves have not had a personal experience.

People can be lycans without having to perform the requirements set by hollywood. Just like there are vampires, even though they mostly don't meet the requirements of hollywood vampires. As far as actually changing forms, I withhold judgment on that. Science discovers new species almost every day so who is to say that the human form couldn't change. So I keep an open mind on it, but to believe it, I'd have to witness the change.

I like your response, alastordarc. I feel very much the same way. The thrill of the hunt, rare meat, a bit more hairy than the norm. I dont nessisarily "shapeshift" so to speak, but i think alastordarc will agree there is a certain change when certain situations arise. The only way to describe it is a shot of energy rush. I talked in another thread about different types of vampires. And my opinion is that energy vampires ARE in fact out there. Its a similar concept, but instead of a physical change, its more of an internal change. More of a primal urge.

Also ,as far as the full moon goes, its more of an infactuation than a sorce of power. I can just catch a glimpse of a full moon and my eyes will be stuck. And occasionally i howl for fun, but its not instictive.

I really dont think a lycanthrope that can shapeshift exists. Although its really fun to think so. And from the things that ive heard on VR, i would like to think its possible.

You can use whatever term you like...but you are NOT a Lycan...or werewolf or anything along that line..you may have certain urges or feelings...but you are NOT Lycan.Sorry to burst your bubbles...you can roleplay all day you can eat raw meat...chase women around while horny...roll in the midnight dew naked..but you are not a Lycan...the term is made up by a Hollywood writer.Lycanthropy is a disease...of the brain...drives people mad with blood lust and causes them to murder without reason....so if you want to be linked with a disease like that...then so be it you are a Lycan.

Belief in the werewolf, or "spirit-wolf," probably began with early-medieval wolf clans who worshipped their totemic gods in wolf form, as did some people of the Greco-Roman world centuries earlier.

http://werewolves.monstrous.com/lycaon.htm

Lycanthropy (werewolfism) was named for Apollo Lycaeus, "Wolfish Apollo." He mated with Artemis as a divine Wolf Bitch at Troezen.

The She-Wolf was another aspect of the Triple Goddess. Some tribes "turned themselves into wolves" for a few days each year during their religious festivals, presumably by wearing wolf skins and masks.

Not to be outdone, the Irish in Ossary devoured the flesh of cattle in their wolf garb.

About that Lycan or Werewolf is just a Hollywood creation I wouldn't like to agree completely, because just now i remembered that in Latvian myths there is a "werewolf", called "vilkatis", "vilkacis" or "vilkaceks".

They were humans, who changed as wolves. They had eyes of a human and their back part of body was higher than the front, for wolves it was said it's the other way.

There are even said to be several ways how to become a one. Of course they are just in myth level.

Wikipedia

In Greek mythology, the story of Lycaon provides one of the earliest examples of a werewolf legend. According to one version, Lycaon was transformed into a wolf as a result of eating human flesh; one of those who were present at periodical sacrifice on Mount Lycæon was said to suffer a similar fate. Herodotus in his Histories[5] tells us that the Neuri, a tribe he places to the north-east of Scythia, were annually transformed for a few days, and Virgil is familiar with transformation of human beings into wolves.[6]

The Roman scholar Pliny the Elder, quoting Euanthes,[7] says that a man of Anthius' family was selected by lot and brought to a lake in Arcadia, where he hung his clothing on an ash tree and swam across, resulting in his transformation into a wolf, a form in which he wandered for nine years. On the condition that he attacked no human being over the nine year period, he would be free to swim back across the lake to resume human form.

In the Latin work of prose, the Satyricon, written about 60 C.E. by Gaius Petronius Arbiter, one of the characters, Niceros, tells a story at a banquet about a friend who turned into a wolf (chs. 61-62). He describes the incident as follows, "When I look for my buddy I see he'd stripped and piled his clothes by the roadside...He pees in a circle round his clothes and then, just like that, turns into a wolf!...after he turned into a wolf he started howling and then ran off into the woods."[8]

Enjoy

In a paranormal aspect, it's possible that the moon exerts some kind of influence over man. However, lunacy as a means of lunar gravity affecting our mass and therefore our mind is less than supported by current studies. No discernable difference appears to affect most people on a full moon unless they KNOW it's a full moon. That then puts forth the issue of self influence. You know it's a full moon and therefore act differently. This is usually used to explain the rise in hospital cases though even that is rather debatable since not every hospital statistic is up on a full moon.

In nearly every study done on lunar affects for humans (including births, lunacy, violent crime, alcoholism and traffic accidents) there was no relation to a statistical increase during various phases of the moon (including the full moon)...there's exceptions (like a Wade County, FL study) but they're currently considered the anomaly not the rule.

The key thing to consider with relation to lycanthropy is whether one likens it to a scientific or paranormal / metaphysical phenomenon. If one feels that the state of being a lycan is a metaphysical state, then any affect of the moon doesn't need to be measured conventionally. It could be a spiritual or 'magical' issue and therefore subject to the rules of 'belief' and not science.

I don't think that a full moon has anything to do with the general idea of werewolves as portrayed by the media in such amusing films as An American Werewolf in London.

However, once again FelixFelix states things in a rational, intellectual way explaining what I also perceive as the reasoning for werewolves.

They were on the verge of shifting but controlled it to were they wouldn't because of their location. It would be quite bad to shift in a house with other people and two children that know nothing about it.
From the part that I saw was that their muscles were contracting, a bit of a fever you could say and some.....convoltions I guess you can say.

The thing is, there is no solid proof of 'lycans' out there. WHo has actually sen one change? Not almost, not convultions, or a fever...but actualy change from man into wolf right in front of them. If this happened, wouldn't more people see it? I gues I'm a skeptic when it comes to this. I love the idea, but until I see it or someone can show me hard evidence I can't say that they exist. Sorry if my opinion offends anyone. Please, if you have proof, show me.

Werewolves****

There may people that live like or believe they are but there is no scientific proof that one can transform into a "werewolf"

I believe there are many forms of possible proves but it is up to you truly to settle which of it you believe...alot of old stories and legends could be taken as proof but then again they could always be seen as just that stories passed down through out the ages.

Its all a matter of personal belief...much like the vampire way of life.

Aside from the mythology (which is always a good place to start folks, and often an excellent place to dwell), a number of ancient writers such as Galen and Virgil wrote the first descriptions of werewolves. They rejected the myths and insisted that the human change into animals was a diseased condition brought on by depression and drugs.

From the Vampire Book

I get your comming from I'm the same way "gotta see it to believe it" but maybe people never really saw a true shift is because they never lived to actually say anything....then to top it off weres in northern areas can't fully shift they can only part shift so they don't really bother to do it because now a days they're not full blooded
I know they're real but thats all on ya'll not trying to make you believe just informing what saw, observed, and heard ^-^

Not many people have seen a true vampire either.

If there is a distinct possibility of "live" vampire's then the same can be said for "werewolve's".

But unitl we get recorded undenialable proogf of either, people are free to let their imaginations run wild :)

If your meaning the people that shift without control at the full moon.. mmmm I would doubt it.. not say fro sure it can not be for I do not know everything so can not say for 100% sure.

Now as we have a myth view of vampires and the "real" modern view... whats to say there is not some thing like that for them as well. Is that in fact not what Otherkin would in a way be really?

My people believe in skin walking... I have seen those that claim they can... seen them preform the rituals and I admit other than they major part of their outer body not changeing they took on a great deal of the attibutes of the animal.. and there was some small changes in face and ect.. which alot can be put down to exppresion and such I am aware... but there was a totally different feleign about the energies of these people.. do I call them Lycans.. no for I see that as a silly term much as using vampyre... but in my view.. there were .. other.

I don't believe that there has ever been any proof shown to the public about this, so it all depends on a personal belief or a proof that may have happened to oneself about whether you believe that ability or power of a human being is able to undergo transformation into an animal.

Werewolves existing as anything other than fantasy is just that fantasy. Nice to think, but fantasy just the same.
