I had a thread exactly like this up some time ago and it got very popular and heated.
So I'll pose the question again.
Do you believe in a god(s)/goddess(es)? And please state the reasoning behind your belief.
Note: Don't let this turn into a free for all. I'm not on a crusade against organized religion... well not on this thread I wont be, but if you'd like to discuss that in private, I'll crusade all day long :D
I believe........I believe that he has helped reduce the cancer in my brain and has given me a more positive outlook on life........
i believe in gods and goddesses because when i needed real help, they provided it.
I believe there is some sort of higher power/powers but I don't think we're capable of understanding what it is exactly. We just give names to the unseen to make it easier to comprehend.
Organized religion has little or nothing to do with the spirit/force that moves through us and all things.
To me this force is a real thing and no it doesn't bring riches or fame. I simply feel it as the breeze coming through my window, or the waves rolling up on the beach.
Tis a matter of faith and belief. You have it or you don't. Just because you might not have it now doesn't mean you will not acquire it later.
Peace and Joy
I'm a little weird myself.
I think the Universe has some kind of energy that flows through it. But I most certainly don't think it's a person.
some say that there is a God and others say that there isn't. i am one of the ones that belive there is a God in heaven please don't judge me.
I believe there is a god/goddess. However, I don't believe it is a person, but more an energy that flows through all of us, which is why I would say that if they were represented as people, god wouldn't be the pinnacle of good, and the devil the pinnacle of evil; in my opinion, they would be one person, since there is good and evil in all of us, we just choose how we use it.
I believe in Gods and Goddess and I do believe they possess powers to help heal us etc and that they can not mess with free will. I am not a "religious" person so I can not stand here and say I believe in one God only. I honestly believe in a lot of different things. :/
I do not believe in a Deity of any kind. Im one of those Atheist types. =P
To start: Do you believe in gods/goddess'?
Yes I believe in several goddess' including Nyx, Durga, Selene. I do not believe in gods but I believe that all my goddess' have consorts.
Second: why?
Because since my awakening they have been there. Leading me on my drier path and helping me keep my sanity. When I was raise as a catholic people saw me as a demon. Which I am but not in their sence of the word. I'm no devil.
If you read all the religious guidelines or bibles or whatever you want to call them side by side they all have a lot of things in common. A lot of the stories match up. Maybe not word for word but in general lines and times, characters, etc...
I believe it's all the same God just with a different name. Higher powers can choose any form they want be it male or female, both genders at the same time or neither if they so choose. You all could be right in what you believe or every single one of you could be wrong. *shrugs*
So what do I believe? I believe that God has at least 99 names... Who's to say you don't know the 100th?
what if we think about "God/gods" here ok here we go often refured to all knowing a source of all creation a path to never ending joy vengeful and easy to anger and will one day be the death of us all what if god is everything well some might read this and say that god is everywhere but what if god truely is everything a collective force made of every thing that has lived at anytime though out time what if a prayer is simply away to connect with this collective thought and it is though the power of our own conection that is our saving grace there is a school of thought that says Jesus did not embody god by becoming a man but became the embodyment of god by becoming one with god making him a god himself in a sence the father the son and the holy ghost is that it, what ever happen to us all being the children of god made in his image what if that image is of the soul and what if the man who was written died for our sins was more of a leader of a new path and not a man who should be worshiped but fallowed as a man of thought is it possable that god is a collective thought and heaven is being a free self relient part of that thought and hell simply be a soul who has lost all connection to the life force around it
Its all in the hat..
Or should I say thinking cap?
http://www.shaktitechnology.com/god_helmet.htm
I don't have a name for it, and I don't think it needs a name, but perhaps we name it to conceptualize it.
I agree that I do not believe that it needs a gender, to be plural or singular, that it does not have to be aware or unaware, it is as it is, as it needs/wants/manifests to be.
And I believe that we are all connected through/by/as it.
I am a Christian, proud to be, but my perspective on the way our faith should behave is EXPONENTIALLY different from your average run of the mill bible thumper, its a faith that makes sense to me, and leaves room for a multitude of possibilities. :D now i just have to anxiously await my hate mail.
I am actually a very spiritual person as well as a Vampyrian Spiritual Father Ordained and able to marry in Ohio) but my beliefs are not most peoples beliefs and I believe all many different types of Goddesses, Gods, and Spirits ect. However if you wish to know more you will have to contact me directly or go to my site on my profile page as I do not spread my beliefs around as it gets me in trouble and I despise drama ect...
I believe in God. I also believe the is a heaven and hell. I might not go to church but I believe in God.
I don't believe in god/god's or the female version of such a being. It's too implausible that they would exist somewhere outside the realm of our being able to find them and yet be able to affect our personal lives individually.... as told in most of the scripture of the Quran, New Testament, Old Testament, Sutras of other Texts I didn't mention.
So many of you answer the question with an agenda in mind, to make others believe in your cognition of god. If God exist and the devil exist and the goddess exist, and then, they all have something to do with the evolution of humans, from birth to the death, then, why is that they let so many infamous act to happen? Why do they agree in the exploitation of children? or the carnage during war? My fellow readers, my humble opinion is, God/goddess/devil/or what ever is "up" there, only exist, like I said, "up" there, in the head of the believers.
Markus, did you happen to follow that link Iposted above? In light od your post,it might be of interest to you.
If there are indeed Gods and Godesses of different types, then some of these "infamous" acts as you put it could be explained in part. For example,Kali. If she really did exsist,it could explain some mass murders commited by some people etc..
After all,she feeds on misery,as do many of the so called Gods.
Anyway,just random thoughts.
I believe at this time ,I lean more towards the ancient alien visitation thing, and that mankind, upon seeing them believed they were Gods.
As a Christian I am to believe that there is a God, but what makes it hard for me to believe in just one is this, God created man, who created God? Was he/she just there or was it the "holy spirit" and if so, who or what created the holy spirit?? I've asked myself and others this question many times before and still ponder the though of who or what created "God".
Although raised a Catholic, I long ago at a young age began questioning the idea of it all. I believe that there is an energy that is bigger than all of us, but it is not an old guy in sandals in the clouds, a grown up version of Santa if you will.
I believe that energy lives in all living things and it is personal.
I do not subscribe to organized religion , to me it is all man made as is the rituals created to appease mans emotional needs.
It is that need that is , in my opinion, the driving force behind wars fought in the name of that need, so very sad how much blood was and still is shed over it.
We all shall find our answers when our time comes.
No, I am not religious, mainly because it's all made up mumbo jumbo...sorry but it is. Everytime science shows the truth we get another excuse.
The truth is every culture has a need to believe in some divine power so they can deal with suffering, death and the cruel nature of the planet. Kiwis believe in sacred river rocks and whales, Indonesian Islanders believe in sacred sharks, christians like crosses, pagans like earth mother. I have a soft spot for the Pagans as of all the religions at least theirs makes more sense.
That is not to say I do not believe in higher intelligence or higher power, there is a great deal of evidence showing this to be the case.
Indeed I have seen and experienced things that defy conventional science, what they are? mmm...not sure. Probably aliens having a laugh at my expense.
We are not amused.
I believe in God as a matter of preference. There's no point in trying to prove whether He does or doesn't exist; that would require Absolute Knowledge.
I am the only "God" that can change the events in my life, therefore, I will bend no knee to another for the achievements or failures in my life.
Outside influences still have the ability to change your life. Chances are those things will happen regardless of whether or not you pray to them.
Not the God who created the earth God, that would just be cruel, as planet Earth is like an ant farm, purely for entertainment...
I often wonder...
And in my wondering, I sometimes become angry. To me, there is no logical reasoning for unjust suffering of any kind. Why do we need to suffer and go through hell before we 'see the light' and get redemption?
The very fact that there are child molesters, serial killers, wars, etc makes me wonder if there is a 'just loving god'. If he/she is around, he/she needs to get back to us and take care of business, instead of being an absentee landlord.
My three cents.
I think that humans have been barking up the wrong tree for quite some time. Do I believe there is a higher power? Yes, but I'm quite certain that the higher power that you (blanket term being used here) believe in are starkly different by comparison.
Some might find the above statement confusing, so allow me to clarify. When most people make the mistake of bringing up the topic of what God/Goddess/Demi-God/Corporate Entity/Power Structure they believe in, the issue of Good .vs. Evil is always at the base of the inevitable dickwaving bitchfest. Thus, the spirit of the argument of ignorance is encompassed by the cliche phrase of "two sides of the same coin."
In my case, there is no coin. There aren't even sides to the matter. There is no good, there is no evil. The more I pay attention to detail, the more I believe this. I'm even willing to place bets against myself that there is no higher power because of the diabolical simplicity and symmetry of the function. Good and evil are terms used by ignorant fools to promote their own distorted cause: A true creator does not care about who wants what slice of the pie, or who owns what half of the hemisphere. Because of this, on a personal level, a true creator is detached, busy with their own numbers games and philosophical ideas. The only thing this can mean is that since good and evil do not exist, the only way to measure what is quantifiable is intent with results.
If the results do not match the intent, then there's no need for a solution. God plays with dice. God plays favorites. God lets the chips fall where they may. But it's up to you as an individual to rise to the occasion. Otherwise, you go back to the scrapyard. Sink or swim.
Murderers, rapists, benefactors, philanthropists.
There is no right or wrong outside of human perception.
There are only things that happen.
The rivers could be red with blood today, but fast forward a million years and everything is beautiful.
Idbe...
whilst I like your thinking, the evidence all around us points to a struggle between two forms, the light and the dark, the creation and the destruction, the predators and the cattle...
Importantly there are species like humans who are neither, as omnivores we have a choice, we are the Grey in the spectrum.
Which do we choose? the fast food, drug, alcohol and tobacco industries are parasitic, sometimes predatory..
The charities are mostly givers, but not always, as with Doctors and Politicians they often feather their own nests and are more predatory, thus it is complex.
Countess Isabella -
I totally agree with you. As humans, we have a will, and choices to make. Over the thousands of years of evolution, we know and understand on some level what good and evil is, and we do chose sides.
Whether one believes in a god/gods or not, one knows what good and evil is, and acts accordingly, whether they want to admit it or not. (That could exclude those who have certified mental disorders, like some sociopaths. Hell - even most of them know 'better' - they just don't care).
When the subject of God comes up, there will inevitably be a discussion on good and evil. It's all part of the package.
doesnt matter what you believe or who are you are exactly, we're all in this together connected one way or another
Actually I'm not sure if gods and goddess are in actual existence but I'm sure there are somewhere in the Cosmos. But, I think gods and goddesses are more of a concept and an energy that has accumulated since the dawn of man.
I am Native American and firmly believe in a higher spirit, creator we see spirit in every thing animals, earth, every creation
Gods and Goddess yes I do believe
i believe that there is a god or higher power amongst us. i believe in heaven and also hell however i believe too in quite a lot of paganism so in that since i also believe there may be lesser gods/angels/ spirits of whatever u like to call them for the most part i believe in the spirit world for it is where i get my power for my magics i drawn on the spirit of nature as well as living and non living spirits this is a very controversial subjet but i believe no one is right or wrong we are all different as are our beliefs i consider myself agnostic but i am sure of what i do believe the rest may or may not but who am i to discount anyone or anything
I believe in a God on God who cares and that is why He put himself so far from us he hides His eyes from are wrongs becasue he can not bare to look at them that dose not mean He does not know they are. Its just from the start He gave us all free will , if he were to step in and say enough is enough he would have to finsh us all . not a one is worth to be a god not a one is worthy to be good . but He made it posible for the living blood to save us all . It took His own blood . He had to become human and die one , to show us how he cared . Then he had to show he was God by leting things go back to the way they were and let thos believe that will believe and not make man do a thing but choose . and once again we did not choose Him or not in whole .
So in a way we are judges of our selfs . In a way we are all a form of vampire and that is we take what was once made whole and made it incomplet by putting ourself into it.
We think we as humans have the answer we dont . Anything we do , we can only do with what we have been given we dont make new things .
God is a being that no one can say what he is not in whole , one thing i do know for myself is He is .
But humans want to think that we are right and that there is no out side force or i like to call it outside powers for even tho we can have power the power we have is given to us we do not make it .
Lets put it this way if i make a spell to do something . To most if you think you cast it and the power comes from you , then why would it work even if you did not believe it works .
We can have power but we dont make it .
Some use God to say what is right and what is wrong and judge others so they try to make things black and white.
I say no its not that way its like this we all have free will if we use it or not is up to us .
A wise person once said to me , if someone says to go God said to do this .
They are wrong God advises us to do good , but He never tells you to do anything you dont want to do .
With one exception if you are not incontrol in the frist place like a young child whos mind is undevloped .
We can not come to the everafter unless we become as new borns .
That said do not realy on knowladge that we know and things we understand or even things you have learned but just let it all go .
I believe in many gods/goddesses^`-`^
my main goddess is Nyx
^,..,^
we all have many gods and i fight mine , to me they are not real but they do try to get a hold on me , money is one , love and lust are another.
but they will lead me to death and i know that they have a bad ending .
I believe in a higher power. I believe in the Gods and Goddesses because they are truly there when i need them and i can feel it as well.
I DO believe in a God, The christian God to be exact..The great I AM.
To me it just comes natural. I always depended on Him to guide and help me..and He as always come through. Even when I thought He wasn't, He was.
Well no i don't belive in God! Why ? i will tell you why .
In my family, all believers, and they are Orthodox Christians, but i am not .I do not want anyone to misunderstand me or to insult with what I will now say.
Several times I was asked by believers why I fight against God and the church, and probably a hundred times to ask me that question. To avoid constantly repeating the same thing here is the list of reasons.
Under the "fight" I mean argumented discussion and / or humor at the expense of religion, which should compel the people to open and objective and think about their different faiths and religious institutions.
1) Most of the wars fought for religious reasons. Almost any war, genocide, ethnic cleansing ... not condemned by religious institutions (except if it was necessary to condemn the enemy), and churches are often blessed their troops and atrocities they did. Stories about the crusades and the Arab conquests we are not very close, but the war in Croatia and Bosnia is. The Orthodox Church is the late 80's began to inflame nationalism and religious intolerance. SPC (political party) in this war, wanted to seize the larger territory, and war is also a good opportunity to earn (funerals, candles, etc.).
Suicide bombers are Muslim rule. They believe that as martyrs go to heaven (where he will get 72 virgins) and will also provide a ticket to paradise your entire family. It should be borne in mind that these are very religious people, who do not have a shred of doubt that they believe otherwise would not have placed explosives around.
2) Religions create (artificial) differences between people. This starts from early childhood (parents and religious) - Serbian child is not the same as the Muslim child only because their parents belong to different fan clubs (different religions). In many areas, mixed marriages are either prohibited or highly undesirable just because someone's gods have different names. This can only create hatred and intolerance that lead to conflict and violence.
3) Religion as a rule endanger health. Several dozen children die each year in America because their parents denied them medical care, believing that God would heal them. The Catholic Church caused a real genocide in Africa by propaganda against condoms. This prohibits our Orthodox contraceptive pills, coils, and abortion. Condoms are allowed, but not desirable. In doing so, the church imposes a rather unhealthy attitudes about food and sex. It is interesting that almost none of the church in America, or the code (and probably everywhere in the world) we have no ramp for the disabled, as if they are there undesirable.
4) Religion is child abuse. I am not only thinking of what they do Catholic priests or the pruning of Jews and Muslims. The imposition of religion to children from early childhood and intimidation by some omniscient and omnipresent gods is the most common psychological abuse. Children should be allowed to choose freely whether and in which God will believe when they grow up and start thinking for themselves.
5) All three Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) discriminate against half the world's population - women. In the words of Patriarch Pavle, women should cover their heads as a sign pokornisti husband and the church, and should not go to church during menstruation because they are dirty then. Paul also said that women and birth machines cannon fodder. Orthodox Jews will be three times a day to thank God because he was not born a woman. The worst situation is definitely in Islam. According to Sharia law (which is the work of God) women must be wrapped in a sheet when they leave the house, and can only leave the house, accompanied by male relatives. Women's testimony in court is never taken seriously, and women who are raped are condemned for it. In some parts of Africa and Asia still practice female circumcision, and in some extreme cases is carried out and stitching the vaginal opening.
6) Religion is almost always opposed to the progress of science. In the Middle Ages, the scientific work represented a serious offense. Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake because he claimed that there are more worlds like ours. In the eighteenth century the church was against lightning, even lightning rods are accused of an earthquake in Boston. Now the church a great dust rising about stem cell research that could be used to treat many diseases. Stem cells would probably constituted the most progress after the discovery of penicillin, but reducing the number of sick and deceased priests reduced income. Religious institutions fortunately no longer have a major impact on power, but still inhibits religion, and science negation of important scientific theories (in particular the theory of evolution).
7) Clericalization society - this is particularly the case with us. The 2009th when the financial crisis because of declining business, and workers lost their jobs when they are detained soup kitchens, the Serbian Orthodox Church received 330 million dinars from the state budget, and to improve the financial position of the clergy and monks. Church, giant crosses and others, are very often built by the state or municipal budgets from which should be financed and hospitals, social programs, etc.. Priests have more influence over the politicians in power that they are constantly drawn into khm .. opening of the colon. The courts of the priests as a rule apply double standards (Pachomius Petakov ...).
8) pressure environment. Every Serb must be Orthodox, must go to church, to fast, to observe the holidays ... If someone does not say the glory of the cross with relatives, then something is wrong with him, or is it some stupid or sectarian. If someone is working on a red or eating fat on Christmas Eve it is definitely sick. Only a total rogue and rogue or komunjara (no one knows what the above) can reject our wonderful Orthodoxy. Why do people not understand that there are individuals who do not want to be part of their flock, and who do not want to bleat to the rhythm of chanting priest.
Sport fishing is in my opinion one of the most boring activities, and generally do not understand how someone can stand next to the shore and wait, and when you catch a fish was immediately returned to the water. What is the general point of that? So far no one has forced me to fish or to watch someone as fishing. Fishermen who squat along the coast do not bother me at all. That's why I do not have the need to criticize fishing and / or fishermen. If someone likes to fish it is his personal matter, period. Their opinions on fishing shewing only if someone asks me.
On the other hand, religion is imposed on me at every step whether it is a general social phenomenon that I listed above, or the imposition of religion by the (close) environment. This bothers me and I can not keep quiet. Everyone should have a right to believe in whatever they want, but to freedom of religion there must be freedom from religion. The state would have to be completely separate from the church, and religion would have to be a personal matter for each individual.
Fortunately for us there is such as it is free speech and this is one of the most important thing in the world. Freedom of speech should be used for arguments criticizing absolutely everything. Religion (organized) and the church should not be an exception because they are the greatest evil that happened to mankind.
I agree slightly with what the person before me said, ALTHOUGH I don't think a God or Goddess has anything to do with the wars people start here, the way parents treat their children, and has nothing to do with how people act. I think we're in charge of that. No one controls us but ourselves. It was people that started wars, people that are suicide bombers. People that deny their children healthcare, or force a religion upon them.
I would love to believe that my spirit would live on when my body stops working, but I have no proof.
I am still not sure on the higher power question. I don't know if I believe or not. I want to, but I don't know.
I'm more deistic and poly-deistic Goddesses and Gods and various spiritual life. it was better than the former christian churches I suffered through
I will look at links after. I have to say since most say everything is essentially made up of energy I have to believe it is some sort of sentient energy force. I don't think it is a he or she perse but probably is made up of both positive and negative charges. I've heard the math on this so I believe there is something but I don't want to call it "God" because that limits what it is in my mind and most relate that to very specific religions. I don't know if there is a name I could use for it. In my opinion gods and goddesses have been real people that have been elevated after death to that status and mythology has grown around it.
Years ago books came out that stated our brains were hardwired to believe there was something bigger than ourselves that created all things. I have a book on it somewhere. I think culture relates to what we believe that might be. I can't come up with a name because I have read and followed the genesis of most of the creation stories that are told and most often they are copied from one culture to another and then given a twist. It is because of history that I don't believe certain ideas. I think there is an essence of things that man has created by enough people believing in it that can be accessed magickally. These are thought forms but beyond that I guess I am relatively agnostic in some ways and spiritualistic in others.
Religion is the root of all evil, the cause of almost every atrocity.
I could write a long drawn out explanation as to why religion and those whom believe in a man made god are pathetic and weak minded but you're all so inept at thinking for yourselves it would simply be a waste of my energy....
I'll simply say that I'm not a sheep and I don't need a book to know anything about morality and right or wrong.
Asphalt, may I point out a flaw in the logic
" mans consciousnesses creates reality"
There is a great deal of evidence to show that thought can alter reality, the here and now we experience. My own research shows emotion plays a part in that reality.
However, all this universe was here when we were lemurs crawling in the trees 37 million years ago?
yes.
i dont think any of us prolly has a real clue as to what he/she/it actually is, and there may be an overbeing that is in charge of things that has different aspects for us to relate to... but i could be wrong.
i do think something is there. my first degree was in nuclear physics, and the more i study the more i find myself just amazed. i find the big bang to be particularly of interest. "let there be light!" and there was. also if you read about the number "phi" you may find some of your assumptions (if you are an atheist) challenged.
what i find very interesting about atheists is how hard they try to convert people. lol
~W~
what i find as a christian is that most who are not if you tell them that you are they get upset . if there is not a God why get upset if someone wants to believe in one lol
Or if you are into the devil so much then you have to be into God becasue he made the devil .
Even the devil himself knows there is a God and he is all good .
This is the 21st century and there are people who still believe in a devil?
LOL. i believe in a force ( call it God if you like ) who was the reason behind the big bang ect. Science has proven that the universe is ordered, and is directed by certian laws of nature. Even many highly respected scientists admit that there is a certian method to the madness sort of speak. So i guess i would have to say that i believe in God but certianly not in the judeo-christian way., and i deff don't believe in the boogie man of the church. I.E. the devil, satan, ect ect ect. As one Nasa "rocket scientist" said.," There is a better chance that we could take a 747 jumbo jet, take it apart completly, put it in a giant bag, shake it up, and poof out comes a completly functioning 747 in perfect order, then the chances of us coming out of some preverbal soup, and the Universe being in perfect natural order. We understand so little. The unlimited time and space of the universe is almost too much for the human mind to fathom."..........so in my humble opinion. That's what i believe.
Some call it God, or Source, or an energetic conciousness, a creator. Since I believe all living things have a source of creation or birth, I have no choice but to believe. The universe is mysterious, it's vast, it's magnificent. We as humans do not carry all the answers but i do believe some of us have bits and pieces of it within each of us. I myself have seen what looks to be beings of another time, or plane of existance. As long as energy exists, i truly believe that there will always be something bigger and higher than we can possibly imagine.
You removed my post questioning the existence of the Christian God? A perfectly valid question and not over the top...it was titled "The Big Think..."
Even though the evidence was well presented by a celebrity"Ricky Gervias" and is widely available to all?
Smacks of censorship, come now, we cannot complain about internet Bills and piracy and yet pull such threads.
It is a wholly- unholy and inconsistent approach. Here is another valid perspective. If you pull it....and I seriously hope you will not, you will upset me...alot!!!
(You won't like me when I,m angry)
Humans have created God to be this all powerful creator to give purpose and meaning as to why we are here... My question is if everything has to be created why do you not ask yourself what created God? If you can accept that God just was... then why cant you accept that the Universe just is? Accepting the universe seems more logical to me you see it on a daily basis. Mankind is a mammal our only purpose is the same as the other animals to survive and procreate. Why do humans think that theyre so much better than the other animals as to having a different purpose? I can go on and on but you see the point
no i dont , God was not crated becasue he is all powerful .
and scince He made us it makes it more easy for me to see that He did not make us with any power becasue if we had his power we would have uncrated the whole thing in one day .
its just the way it is man loves war it is in our nature.
But most of all if this are just becasue they are then why dont things always go the way we want them to.
Why is it that any could have servived the earth quake in japan if it were not for God , and all the prayers for all the familys there.
i dont believe in luck of any kind or things just happening becasue i have provied it to myself that its just not that way and i am not going to let anyone or thing tell me else wise .
but like i said before God made us with free will so others can think what they want but i know the truth a person i dont know who said the truth shall set you free and it does its not a easy life at all when you choose the truth if you think that life is easy or it can be then you believe in a lie. any one who tryes to make things the easy way then it can and almost in the end will go bad .
i am not one to say tho if you dont do something that it will go one way or the other .
but that is the truth things we choose to believe in or not believe in do make who we are and to some there is a God to others not .
But just becasue i believe in one God does not make it right that people should judge and say that it is the right God for all . Becasue even God would like for us to come to that conclusion on our own and not have some one or even some things make that choose for us.
im not a religious person and i do not believe that gods or goddesses are human i don't know wat they really are but i know its beyond our understanding and that there is something out there that brings hope peace love and joy to us all.
Original Question was: Do you believe in a god(s)/goddess(es)? And please state the reasoning behind your belief.
A. I believe they were probaby aliens that came here at one time and taught humanity how to do things, how to build, grow crops, mated with women to perhaps boost our genes a bit to help us survive better or to have a strong leadership role to guide us, like Kings, Queens, Pharoahs etc etc and I believe there's more than one type of species that have interacted with man in some form. Actually they still do to an extent.
I think some are walking sort of inbetween worlds, another plane maybe because some of us have dream interactions with said Gods, Goddesses and spirits that show us things time to time since they cannot reside here on Earth. They are perhaps pure concious energies that can ONLY exist on whatever plane they reside.
I don't know the reasoning to my belief. It is just something I feel is right within.
I like your post you should watch Ancient Aliens on history channel. It can take what you believe to another level it mixes science aliens and religion all together and actually makes sense.
i really try not to describe why i think the way i do because of feelings. oh, i have feelings, but they are unreliable at best...id rather have someone say to me "i think..." rather than "i feel ..." .
that said my belief in a deity or deities comes from the study of physics, and the mathematics of the number "phi".
many scientists have refereed to phi as "god's calling card". i wont bore you with the details, but you can find it in galaxies and in sea life, and we have an instinctive attraction attraction to forms that are based on phi...why would that be?
just my thoughts, agree with at your own risk.

I actually like those programs Loki and you're right it does make a lot of sense, leaves a lot of mystery, and definitely makes people aware that our ancestry were far more ahead of their time than we can imagine.
God is the only 'thing' that has helped me have some belief in myself. Having gone through a lot of mental torture, the only thing real to me right now is the idea of a God. I cannot follow up with all the Gods/Goddesses, but I do belief in the Human Spirit. As my faith in God deepened, the faith in myself deepened as well.
The idea of God took root in the Human mind, without any explanation for the unknown. Science has dispelled many blind beliefs.
Faith in something - God, many gods, spirits. etc - help many people cope and give them hope.
So - even though I'm not sure what I believe in, I don't bash on what others believe.
I was not bashing any beliefs. People can choose to believe what they want. I would look at you no differently. My gf is agnostic and I have several things I believe as well. more along the lines of i have created my own belief out of others. As far as a creator of everything maybe. but I do not believe God created mankind out of dirt that is absurd to me. But to each their own. I kinda believe like Psy in that we came from aliens. it really is in the history maybe all of our gods and goddesses (that actually predate all Judeo/Christian beliefs) were aliens. Who knows we will never know for sure until we die.
I have studied numerous spiritual paths in search of what I like to call the absolute truth. I will talk to anyone about any religion or any spiritual beliefs they have. I rock that way.
After a particularly long conversation with my neighbor who explained to me that the earth was inhabited but dying when God found it, it hit me.
God is the captain of a starship who terraformed the earth and killed entire existing forms of plant and animal life by destroying their atmosphere so that he could better live in it. Then he left a group of people on earth to study the remaining flora and animal life, promising to return.
The log those people started is today's Bible which has been passed on and captured by Kings and philosophers for centuries each of them adding new rules for society as well as anecdotes and also journal entries to record things that they had seen or done. I believe that the last scribe wrote Revelations as a hypothetical warning that man is on a path of self destruction. The fabled Christ would have been a political activist and he wanted people to think for themselves and choose to believe in God or practice their faith any way they liked. The message being that the governments are corrupt and we should not blindly follow them. I think that the message in Revelations is in regard to the laziness of humanity and the fact that while they question their governments they no longer actually care that mankind would become the Anti-Christ.
Or I could just need to sleep. Now you know what I am thinking about while I wash dishes.
Loki666 - I wasn't referring to you or anyone else in this thread. I was making a personal statement.
Apologies to anyone here who took my comment personally.
ok im already ready for the hate mail...
jesus christ and the bible..fiction..written by many men paid by the vatican masterminded by a wealthy man who bought the papacy.. i do however believe in gods goddesses ..spirits..forces in this universe..good/bad/neutral...some are stronger and more malignant than others..some ancient..reincarnation? i hope so..i believe in karma..have seen it work too many times...i believe in ones own spirit..for without it spells rituals and incantations would be ..meaningless..and i have seen the product of those also..the science as LordW mentioned..it is a hobby of mine..theories physics...there are larger forces at work in the universe..as to who and what..maybe one day we shall know..maybe not...jewlz
Oh i wasn't directing that at you Isis. I know you wasn't directing that at anyone. It is all good this is a discussion thread after all :)
As I see it, most may call me "agnostic".
I see and accept the existence of a higher force / entity / "being", and I think the whole humanity is "doing it wrong" by following doctrines which were written by other mortals. I prefer to imagine that "force" namelessly, shapelessly and faceless, as it is much higher than human consciousness could actually perceive.
They say to never discuss politics or religion . . . but I'll throw in my 2 cents.
There is just as much evidence for god as there is for the tooth fairy.
God is a social construct used to galvanize groups to a higher communal experience. A belief in a higher being, allows new social groupings that can be exploited by charismatic people to further an agenda.
I won't say a belief in god or religion is bad though. It has done great good and serves no different purpose than using the Vampire rave network.
I do not believe in God. I was raised by non-religious parents, and they let us know early on that we could choose for ourselves what we wanted to believe concering religion(s) and God(s). I love learning about religion, but to me it seems pretty farfetched. I respect religious people as long as they respect my views :-) None in my family or circle of friends believe in god, but then I am norwegian and religion isn't really that big here, mostly atheism :-) So in that sence I guess I am pretty average lol.
To me God or Gods were the substitute to explain certain events that happened during their time, when really most can be explained by natural events. If crops didn't do well, "Oh we didn't make the Gods happy!" or "Our civilization is dying, let's sacrifice a human, maybe that will appease the Gods." Whether or not these "Gods" exist, science and the spiritual have always been entwined and wholly accepted.
OK doubt this relates but lets add some humor to this subjuct shall we.
My mother thinks that a group of drunken ailiens landed on earth in front of the first evilitionized humans. One got left behind because he passed out and his buddies left him so...........he put himself in charge and took over as a king which them became god as time went on because he was different than the humans..........
So ya my mother is nuts.
Let me start by asking… What is God? Now to answer that first the question needs to be broken down into more specific questions like, “Does God have a physical form?” and “What is the nature of God?” So lets break it down a little further… “What is life?” Now life as we understand is has a form so lets move onto the question, “What is the nature of life?”
The very nature of life is what we would call evil. Take fetuses for example; they are essentially parasites, feeding directly from the mother, Even after they are born they drain their parents or guardians of their life, really until they fend for themselves they are completely parasitical, and afterward they take from other life as well, becoming essentially symbiotic in nature. Giving and taking not necessarily in equal measure.
All life is actively consuming something and as such killing another form of life. Murder with selfish reasoning is all it is. Yet these "murders" are essentially creating life as well. Bacteria, fungus, insects, it is feeding these creatures and providing a womb for the next trillion or so generations of life forms. Death is life, life is death. It is impossible to understand God because everything and nothing is God.
As humans we put our lives above all other life forms, yes even animal rights activist, and that is normal, whether right or wrong, it just is. I doubt that one of those activists would willingly allow a bacteria to kill them because to not do so would be to kill billions+ of lives that will never be replaced. What of that Genocide?
All life is God, even that which we believe not to be, rocks, gasses, fire, the very molecules themselves are a form of life, not just the building blocks as we would believe. So for God to take sides is impossible, it's like having a disagreement with your arm, ridiculous. For all we know we could be the equivalent of cancer to other life forms.
God did write the Bible in all it's variations, the Koran, even this little rant here, and yet did not at the same time, not all life was involved in the process of creating it. This being obvious by the very fact that not everyone can or will agree, not to mention some life forms weren't even born yet. And still a part of God did write this, that part is me, a life form composed of many.

My step brother once said this to his mother:
If god created jesus, what created god? He couldn't have just popped up out of no where...
I agree. Especially if the earth and universe was just "made" by god a couple thousand of years ago when science has proven that animals have existed for MILLIONS of years. :)
LOKI666 wrote, "I kinda believe like Psy in that we came from aliens. it really is in the history maybe all of our gods and goddesses (that actually predate all Judeo/Christian beliefs) were aliens. Who knows we will never know for sure until we die."
Aliens??? are watching Ancient alien program in TV and now you believe..cool. But, the terminology called GOD, is not alien. Alien, If they exist, are just creature of the Universe, only difference, they live in another galaxy. And no, we were not created by aliens.
I have stated this many times on VR.
I believe in God and Jesus Christ. I am not religious though I do have faith. We all need something or someone to believe in. Faith gives us a purpose, something to live, and strive for.
As for religious texts. They all have similar stories, morals, and ethics. Noah's Ark, the Garden of Eden, etc. Each religion has a variation of those stories. It has to be more than a major coincidence that they do. Since most of these civilizations had no contact with eachother at the time.
I believe the bible. Even if you don't believe in it. Gives you moral structure, a good way to live your life. Just like the parables in Aesop's Fables. It just a guidline, nothing more, nothing less.
I used to be a big time Christian, but over the past few years that's faded. I've been on and off with various religions over the past 5 or 6 years, however. Right now I'm focusing on Wicca, I haven't studied that much of it yet but I plan on getting more in depth. It speaks to me..everything makes sense. When you're drawn to something, you know it's where you're meant to be. And that's the one I keep going back to.
I am Christian,he brings me peace and comfort and has saved my life more times than once. I don't have all the answers as to why I believe I just do and as far as not understanding some things,I do not think we are able to comprehend all there is to know you just have to have faith and believe. I am not good at putting things into words.I hope everyone finds that peace no matter what you believe. It is a awesome feeling
So this is the question: Do you believe in a god(s)/goddess(es)? And please state the reasoning behind your belief.
I do in the sense that the word has been applied to people who were smarter and lived longer than the people they conquered. I believe many of them were real people that eventually became venerated and over time legends sprang up about them and some while they were still living. Unfortunately any question dealing with gods and or goddesses always end up for some being a discussion about Christianity. God is not a name, it is a title and it doesn't mean automatically it would have any gender let alone male. That is a cultural idea and some that were actually voted upon. Check out Councils of Nicea. Moving along...I don't know what I believe specifically although I have theories. I think there is something that unifies all of creation but it is impersonal really.
I think when people pray, the positive energy that is raised uplifts them, whoever they pray to. I have physically felt this. I don't follow the dark against the light thing because being magickally oriented I believe it is a physical illusion. If one is Christian the book says that all things stem from the one, both good and evil. Over time people have changed those ideas for some reason and it says mererly I AM. I believe something exists but to put a name to it makes it culturally specific and then the hair splitting starts. I have used Sekhmet as a godform magickally and I believe she healed my father at one time. He had at that time a 50/50 chance to live to the morning and was incoherent and over night he was sitting up in bed talking to visitors smiling. He has now passed. Was that a god or was that somehow the manifestation of positive thought and energy? Did it come from me or outside of me? I simply do not know but I kept my promise to her and have had a place for her ever since. Yes, I do believe in gods and goddesses essentially but not in the traditional sense. Beyond that it gets too complicated and I have a tendency for dissertation. :)
wow, everyone has their own thoughtful ideas. i'm surprised to see how many think a bit like myself. I believe "God" is more an energy or force. I've been reading some legends about Rakshas as apposed to vampires in the Hindu religion. Growing up around Christian influences this religion confuses me, but I like to widen my horizons as much as possible. It's terrible to think that religion has so much of an effect on our daily lives and we're still not sure what happens to us. I've always felt at peace with the Native American belief of giving ourselves to the land. I also hope that our souls don't just evaporate when our bodies can no longer function. In a world were everything dies it begs the question, do we renew ourselves? like leech can we inhabit another creature and live on?
Mmm, you stumled across a very interesting point.
Funny that you didn't mean to, throughout history there are tales of prophets that cannot me touched by evil or good.
Those that whilst human have strange abilities...here is a BBC fictional taste based upon thousands of years of such tales.
Some of you will see it as fiction, Xzav, others will read between the lines.
I believe in God, as I am a christian. I have seen and experienced too many things not to. On the other hand I do not support religion. Religion in my opinion is largely either a waste of time or one mans way of making himself feel better about himself by making up rules that hardly any one can pass and then judging you if you don't appear to live accordingly. I think God is a title not his name. Even the hebrew names are more a title of function than actual names but I can see why he wouldn't want us to have his name as we feel we own most of what can name so it keeps us from take for granted things we aren't owed if you see my point.
I wanted to add to what I said. First, in one of the songe the Newsboys did, they had a very profound line I have to agree with.
"The number one reason for atheist is Christians."
I believe that is true. Too often people are believers on Sunday morning and the rest of the week nothing like it.
The other thing is that when it comes down right to it, there is no reason to debate, you either want to believe or you do not. If you do, then a simple explanation is enough if not then nothing will work.
I remember once being stoned and meditating about God.
I do not really remember it,
but what I do remember was- when I was coming out of it was a thought ..."People have NO IDEA what they are talking about when they talk about God."
I believe in God/dess but do not believe that s/he takes an active role in our world.
I could not say why I believe as I do not know.
I think god is just the nature, the largest force to which man still struggle to survive. It provides us with whatever we want and take care of us with its plenty of resources and nothing more than it.......
