This is a thread that I hope will be helpful to those of us that can use the feedback....

It is a well known dirty little secret that for some of us, VR is a very addicting site. We can get absorbed in our friends, the fun, and the sharing of information that we do here.

I would like to know what it is that YOU do to make sure that VR does not take over your "real life." How do you make sure that you don't indulge in too much of a good thing?

Please share some tools you use to keep your homework, real family and friends, work, and outside interests first priority.

As for me, if I have other work that needs to be done, I make a point of sticking to a promise that I'll be off at this exact time and I stick to it, no matter what.

What tools do the rest of you use?

I think I got over the hardcore VR addiction the last time I was here. Now I just sign on when I get some free time and then leave when I need to. Not a big deal anymore...

I'm not addicted enough to this site where I have to prioritize my life. People should automatically put their family, career, and/or school first because those are far more important than a website. Although, at work, this site is blocked so I'm sure I'd be on more otherwise. I want to eat, I want a better job, and I want to spend as much time with my daughter as possible since I have to spend 60 hours a week between work and school. I just leave it to common sense I suppose.

Hmmm... Interesting thread, Pookachu. You're right about VR being addictive. What makes it so addictive to you? I think it's the Status that keeps me on here. I like climbing levels. So, usually I'll set myself a goal like...um...I'll posts 10 posts today. Or I'll rate all the new profiles today. Or I'll rate new database entries. On days that I have free though I just hang out and enjoy the atmosphere! *smiles*

Skylla -
For me, its the learning.
Much of this information was "taboo" for me when I was growing up, so aside from what I instinctively found within, I had no access to any other sources, or any other people.

Fast forward to growing up/career, Ideas forgotten, etc. Suddenly I'm 30, and I'm re-introduced to the idea of energy work that I developed on my own as a child.... Now I find a site where there are TONS of people who know about it that are open to answering any question I have.

Part of my learning here I feel is applicable to my spiritual growth, so I am allowing more time for myself to be on VR that I would if it were "just a gaming or LARP site."

Back to the original topic. From what I am reading in comments, PMs and in journals, so many of us have found we are spending more time indulging than we intend. I wanted to see if we could share some tools to keep us all healthy :)

I agree with you about the learning being an addictive quality of VR as well, Pookachu. Like I mentioned in your other thread, I've just recently began to grace the General Discussion area with my presence! ..lol.. I, too, grew up in the Bible Belt. I was taught that all things NOT Christian were wrong and therefore I led a rather secluded life--religiously speaking. It wasn't until six years ago that I discovered Paganism and, boy, am I glad I did! It's opened my mind up to so many things. I've learned to be very open-minded on all things. The forum is quickly becoming an addiction for me!

I admit I am addicted to VR and I spend alot of time here.....but my children and my husband keep me grounded so to speak. Those duties come first and then I come to VR. But since I suffer from insomnia and don't have to work outside the home I have alot of time that others don't have the luxury of.

I am 110% a VR addict but I don't see it as anything bad. When I am on here I mostly read stuff, I don't enough to post to the boards a lot - but I search all over the net to help me understand what is being talked about - it's making me learn about a lot of wide subjects.

I am in a great House where everyone is helpful, I ask when I am not sure and they fire right on back with a reply. That doesn't happen in real life.

I live in a small village. The are two buses a day into the local town. Apart from standing at the bus shelter or waiting for the fish & chip van on Fridays there is nothing else to do. When it gets dark early its dangerous cycling in the lanes anywhere - its either VR or the TV

I know it can get too much sometimes, so I have a routine. I have to complete everything and eat before I even switch the computer on. So my weekend jobs and homework have to be done and dusted before I switch on.

If there is anything else to do - I do it :)

VR is addicting, however I do have a life outside of VR. I am a prominent member of a Coven and I do my best to remain active there.
I have children so they of course are a priority. It is easy to become involved in/on VR and let the rest of the world pass you by. But as everyone or most everyone here, they have other obligations to family, friends, school.
Being here is a place where you can learn, grow and experience a large diverse population and interests.
For me, I have to find a balance, but the addiction is there indeed.

I'm not sure how much I am addicted to VR as much as the people on here. It is just my husband and I and he works night shift. I try to make sure I set goals for myself, of what to get done around the house. VR is a reward of sorts.

I enjoy talking to the people and having intelligent conversations. I like helping people with their profiles and seeing the delight that what they imagined came true.

VR can be addictive...if you let it. Some things that I have found to aid in NOT letting it take over are:
1. Only staying on until a certain time and then shut it down.
2. Making sure that family, friends, job and boyfriend come first.
3. Only doing a few things at a time...rate or read journals, or post, or play hangman...not do it all in one session.

*grins* yes we are pookachu. I do try to stay on topic ...else it looks rather silly in the thread and altho I can take being silly, I don't always have to look it. :)

I also will add....when the boyfriend is here.....I take a break from VR...don't even turn it on. Then when I do, there are new things to do and people to talk to and thus it keeps me from getting bored with the site.

I see a lot of denial here... heh.

Isn't that the first sign of an addiction? Denying it?

Anyway, I know what p-chu is saying. I'm not so sure too many people have really developed a deliberate tool to keep VR from being an addiction. If it is an addiction for some, I think they enjoy it too much to seek help!

I log on, mostly to see friends. The people here I have found to be amazing and it is a pleasure to make new friends here and communicate with friends. It is what I look forward to the most on VR.

An addiction though? I don't know. If it wasn't for the people I doubt it would have become even a regular habit for me to come here.

Like Artemka said, we're in a great house with a lot of open communication, which makes it easier and more fun to be on.

But, between work and travel and work... my time on VR is relatively limited to when I am sitting at my desk and need a break. r sitting in a hotel room and looking for someone to chill out with. Otherwise I'm just on to check messages and say hi to friends.

But then again, I've never had an addictive side to my personality anyway...

Well, I brought a lot of my friends with me, or made them as soon as I got here. A lot of the people that I have met thru VR are better friends than the ones that I had in real life. It is hard for me to stay off, so I got my family involved in it. If I need to go do something or help someone, I make them call me and remind me, or make them come over, so that I am not as likely to be on. It makes it hard tho, when ur best friends and your fiance are on VR also! lol...

My family doesnt mind calling or coming over to help me stay off and remember to do the things that I need to tho.

The big red font? I guess that was directed at me. ..lol.. It's called a HTML code. Which is something else that VR has gotten me addicted to. Computer graphics. I'm addicted to working on profiles and pages for my coven. I have to set limits for myself as far as this is concerned to. Like I'll set aside a few hours on certain nights to work on a page. It's all about setting limits, I think. Sometimes I'll go over them, but I do have a job and family outside of VR so I try to keep it in check. As for a boyfriend...lol...VR is actually something that he and I share so that works out good!

To me VR is like a second home. I've never felt accepted my whole life and I've never really had any friends. But when I was told about this site by my one true friend in life, I couldn't get off. I found a place where I felt accepted, and I made a lot of friends that mean the world to me. I don't feel addicted to VR, I feel like I choose to come on here because it is a place that makes me feel safe and welcome. I come on when I have the time, when other things in my life are at a rest or over with for the day.

I am not as addicted as I once was... once making sire helped with it. For me, it is what do I have to do tonight/today and plan accordingly. Now being an asst house master, have more time and duties to VR. Whenever free time, I log on

- have an hour to spare, so divide that hour in house duties, ratings, perusing and commenting on threads.

- put aside an evening or afternoon devoted to VR and once again, divide the time into what is to be one within VR.

- other times, laptop and VR are on, but Im watching TV and puttering about the house - doesnt make me feel so guilty and every few minutes go to another page and see what is going on and continue about my puttering.

My situtation is somewhat different, I am addicted to vr but as I am retired, it's not that disruptive to me. I still do my housework and laundry, watch movies and read books. I shop, talk to friends and luckily my best ones are here on vr so I actually stay in closer contact with them than before. The only problem I find is that when we get together our conversations often turn to things we saw or read or learned about on vr.
We have started limiting ourselves to only so long of that before we stop and talk about the rest of our lives and loves.
If I find that it's something I cannot walk away from to do things with my family or friends then I will leave it behind until I have relearned how to handle it.
As it is, I do set a time to quit and a daily goal for the things I want to do. Sometimes I keep to it and somedays I throw it away and do other things like watch a kids movie with my nephew.
I think if you're not participating in your other interests you might have a problem.

I tend to only come on when Im home alone or my loved ones are sleeping. I have at times gotten the, "let me guess your on VR comments." Its just balancing your time. My loved ones are fare more important to me then this sight but I have met people here that have become my loved ones also.

I wouldn't call myself addicted... yet. But I like the status thing. I'm a slight bit egotistical and I like the sense of achievement you get when you get to the next level. I also love the forums and information and opinions. But if I was addicted, I would probably keep myself from being too addicted by using my responsibilities to my sites and school work to keep me off it. Both are a big thing for me so its easy to drop things for them.

I think it's definetly addictive. However I don't feel I am as addicted as I used to be! I try to do things while I'm on. Like cleaning the house, etc. Like put clothes in the washer, & while they are washing, I get on vr. I try to make it a rule that when they are done washing & drying that I get off & put them up. I guess basically I just try to get the other things done & vr at the sametime. I work, but at work I can get on vr! I work nights & it's rather slowly usually..like tonight! So usually when I'm at work, I'm on vr! At home though, my husband will come & let me know if I have been on hours & not even realized. I find it helps to have someone come & remind you!

I sign on now when I can, spend as much time as possible then sign off when I need. But before this point, I used to kinda write a note and let it right beside My computer in big letters saying what I need to do and when, just to remind Myself.

Actually, I'm not so addicted to it anymore. VR has it's moments for me.. the dull and the good.. But I don't let it interfer with my 'real life'. I'm more addicted to driving my car.. lol That keeps me unaddicted to VR I guess. I love driving ;) But housework, kids, social life.. They come first.. VR only helps me procrastinate ;)

Oops, sorry.. no real tips.

Kids are an easy way to keep yourself from developing an addiction to this place, sorry to all those that don't have kids to help you out there lol.

I tend to come on in small bursts..have a look around and move on. If there's something interesting I read it.. get off and come back later with something to add usually when the kids are in bed or they're busy watching TV or occupying themselves.

Other then that.. just point your mouse over the X up the top, close your eyes and click! Go on, be daring! :P

With any addiction you need balance.
Some ppl are too quick to point fingers at others....saying "they need help" Good god...at the end of the day we all know this is a site, and we have real lives aside from VR.
I work full time, have a family to attend to, and still manage to squeeze in time for VR. I must admit that this is very addicting....but its because of the ppl I talk to on here...why I am so stuck on it. I talk to ppl all around the world...and we all have a common ground...and we enjoy much of the same things...so for that I am thankful..but you have to stop and remember that your real family..needs you too...

Well...the addiction was there at first...trying to update my status etc. And if it hadn't been for VR then, well, I'd never have found my fiancee. So for that I do have my VR 'addiction' to thank. Now though...I think I check it about 2-3 times a day for messages, check my profile and if I'm in the mood update it. I do have an 'outside' life. And manage to balance the two.

When i first joined vr, i wasn't addicted, I just came on occasionally, but then when i learned of the incentive if you stay on alot and post in forums and do other numerous things, then you level up and gain acknowledgement. I used to be very addicted to this site, i'd be here in every class and any other time i could. i would go home and get online until bed. Now I'm having to get serious in school and I've got a job, so it's harder to spend time. I've never gotten my real life and vr life mixed up and I'm thankful for that.

Although at first I thought I was addicted. But, I think it was mostly trying to get my profile up to par, and trying to reply to the tons of people on here that came by to introduce themselves and rate me. I always try to answer and rate everyone that comes by my place.

I work nights, so I was on here a lot on my nights off and like now, when I get home in the mornings for a bit.

The one tool that help me with my addiction:
1. I set times to be on here. If it is at night when I am off work, I stay on quite a bit. But, other times, I set an amount of time to be on here.

Other than that I have no other way to curb the addiction. I enjoy it here mainly because of the people that I have met.

I have a nice whiteboard I look at before I get on my computer. It tells me what needs to get done that day and I do it. I usually hang out around my school with my girlfriend until she has to go home and I would then walk her to the bus stop. Also, when I am home I call my friends and invite them over. Guitar Hero is pretty fun ^^

I am an addict!!! But it goes in cycles. There are times when I don't log on for an entire week, and there are times when I check VR several times a day. However, I never let VR interfer with real life obligations.

I don't know if I am addicted to VR, per se, but I do use it as an escape mechanism. So, in thinking about the thread, I think it can be the same problem. I come here to relax and not think about the crap in real life and so sometimes I spend time on here when I should be working.

How I deal with it is by going through work stuff and thinking about all of the places I might get to go when I am done with school. The idea is to try and stay excited about my goals so I stay on track.

I'll admit it can be addicting and I have seen myself start to get addicted but then i remind myself that yes, this is a cool place, but I need to do my homework so I can go to college and be the best journalist I can be. It usually gets me to focus off the website until i can get on. Another way is I check my email and my two other profiles before going on here so that way I know I've fulfilled all my other priorities before coming on here. It helps in some ways but I'll admit that during the weekend, I can be on here for quite a long time.

VR is part of my REAL life. I have real friends here that I genuinely care for and that I talk to outside of our cyber commune. Do I spend every waking moment on VR...well no...I dont have a computer in my bathroom...seriously though, It's something I enjoy and as I do many other things. It's requires balance. There is more to life than VR or MySpace or any other online community and everyone should take this into consideration. There are days that go by when I don't sign in and sometimes its for a quick email check and I'm out for another week, but I'm always thinking about my friends here. That's not an addiction that's life.

Hello I am Phara and I have an addiction to VR... and I dont care.

the only time I am not here is when my daughter is awake, I'm doing domesticated crap or at work (err wait a minute I am on at work too)

or most recently shooting pool and drinking beer with Requiem FROM VR - so I guess that kinda counts as still being here since I am with someone from VR?

I am an addict... I confess, the rest of you need to stop the denial... JUST STOP IT!

FESS UP!, GIVE IN TO YOUR DESIRES!, DONT HIDE IT... LET IT BREATHE! LET IT GROW... BUY A SHIRT! better yet a thong and send me a pic! (kidding on the thong part lol)

::this message brought to you by Phara and endorsed by Cancer::

ok not really but it sounded like it would (especially if more people bought a shirt I suppose... hahah rock on!)

I spend all my free time on VR and I have alot of free time. Yes I am addicted....and I'm loving it. I am fascinated with the paranormal and have been intrigued with Vampires all my life. Sometimes I have even said no to going out with friends just so I can be here =) Now that I have been a member of VR for a couple months I know I will stay a while.

Tools...Just do what I have to do as it comes up but then I come right back.

I haven't become too addicted yet to VR, however, I can share with you ways I broke my initial addicition to the internet..
There came a time when I woke up, I would get on the comp, I stayed online all day everyday, I did nothing else...
Then one day it hit me... y'know its not good ... I wasted away 3 years infront of the comp... and heres how I did it.
First, I made a list of pros and cons.. what was more important and why...
the next thing I did was I actually got hobbies! something away from the computer...
I also had children too but thats always a good way to make sure you don't sit and rot infront of a computer lol...
Now, however, I try not to as soon as my kids are in bed/taking a nap, come sit infront of the computer, I look for other things to do and keep myself entertained..
Honestly.. its a matter of mind. keep your mind busy on other things other then the computer, and over time it'll get easier to not sit infront of the comp or itch as badly to go to it...
I hope this helps a little?

When I first started coming here, I became instantly addicted and would be on for hours at a time and it took over real life alot. So I'd set myself an amount of time to be on, and make sure I did everything I had to do before I got on.

These days, I'm not really addicted, just come here for a little time away and the occasional status uping.

If I ever stayed at a friends or my boyfriends place I would make sure that was their time and I wouldn't go near the computer.

I need therapy! Before stumbling across VR looking for some Vampire Art....I only used the internet to pay the bills and occasional shopping....I am totally addicted to the site...I have found myself more proficient at multi-tasking....I can cook dinner, work, etc and juggle VR at the same time. I am on quite a bit each day. It is the first thing I do in the morning and the last thing I do at night. I know this is not healthy, but what does one do? Cancer will you pay for my therapy?

Because I dont currently have a job outside the home, I've become more addicted than I care to admit! However I'm a full time mom and what better excuse to get my butt off of the computer than my 4 yr old wanting to play, or one of the older kids just needing some "Mom" time! Er..housecleaning, errands etc..also give me a reason to "control" my addiction, or at least balance my many addictions with a good dose of reality! hehe

Well, at work when I have time, I visit this website, as I have my workmates around it's not a good idea to have this website on your desktop, so I prefer when I am alone at work, surfing from forums to another. When my friend told me about it, I was totally addicted to this webiste, but lately, I just sign in when I get some free time and then leave.

I am addicted to this site. Whenever I have free time I log on and spend my time reading forums, articles, journals... you get the picture.

As for setting limits. I don't really do that.

Yes like most of you I make sure that domestic chores are taken care of before I indulge in my addiction. My family never suffers because of my computer usage.

I am grateful to the one who interduced me to this site, she is a true friend here and outside VR.

I been on here for a short time now. I love this site and I can see how it can become addictive. I have met some interesting new friends on here. I work 2 jobs , go to school fulltime and have 2 teenagers, I feel lucky I have the time I do on here. I have been down the road to being addicted to being online, It can become a problem for some. For the most part I think people in this day and age get so busy with real life that this is a good release to be different and express yourself.

Well I don't have much of a life outside VR... but I do set myself limits and my family keeps me grounded. I only allow myself to go on at a certain time.. get off at a certain time and if I have any free time out side those hours I find myself sneaking on to rate, post in the forum stuff like that... But trying to get your status up, your rating level and being with my coven and friends is what makes this site so addictive :)

Hmm... 160.03 hours of my life given to this site. Just having that stat does something psychological to me. I'm still here and I know there are many who have spent much more time here than I...

I wonder if in 10 years I shall look back at the addiction and say this is how much of my life the Rave took.

Coming from someone who has addictive tendencies…

I have been on VR since April of 2005. Almost all of my levels is in time spent and pages viewed. With this addiction as any you simply have to realize when you have a problem and take action. If the addiction becomes a consuming problem it‘s time to look at what you‘re doing and make corrections.
The thing that works best for me is cold turkey. I simply walk away and come back when I have absolutely no desire for it anymore. Or you could just set a timeframe when you come back. Cold turkey, give it a try. It works for me. I stopped smoking cold turkey 9 years ago and I haven’t had a cigarette since. The thing you want to be careful of is to not substitute one addiction for another. It just may become a vicious cycle if you do that.

I play paintball and hang out with my gf. I'm slowly geting bored with this site as I don't really have anything to do on here except talk with a few friends.

I work full time and have 3 kids at home in the evenings. My teens have time limitations for their phone usage and I have given myself the same limitations for computer usage. It works out pretty well.

Of course, what they don't know, they can't hold against me....I confess I do sign on from work when I'm able to.

mainly outside of VR and a few other sites I don't have much of a life outside of them. i find that my friends on here are just as important as the others that are here and deserve just as much time to be with me so i divide up the time to be with tem all equally. because in truth my friends are my life.

wow, well... i was horribly addicted to the matrix game on vr, and that basically consumed my life... most of my sketchbooks have little grids in them of all the letters and numbers i needed to solve them. but um, now that cancer got rid of that game ::pout:: i've found it to be easier to step away from the site. i miss everyone though, so... this is quite possibly my glorious return?

Well I just started on VR and I hope that I find it as intriguing as most of you guys make it out to be.

I am almost always online and enjoy reading what most people have to say about alot of things.

I am a very open minded person and hope to find alot of other open minded people to talk to on here.

And thanks again for having this sit up and running.

hehe and with me at 59.45 days spent. I do want to check in on VR every morning when I'm up and getting coffee going and do keep it on whenever Im puttering about the house. I have learned to better judge my time with VR and "real life". I have my priorities on VR, like my VR House work and duties, and perusing various pages and then move on. Of course, need to do that a few times during the day!
