I do not know if there has already been a posting on this... so if there has forgive me.

I was wondering if anybody knew or had heard of any links between Vampires and the Elf... I mean these two creatures share a great many traits... often possessing pale skin, sometimes pointed ears, immunity to disease, ageless...

So... anything related to this... I would be interested to hear of...

the elves of JRR Tolkkien were indeed angels.

I remember some after a thousand years decided to walk up to heaven, if you remember the scene in the movie. The others went off to war and gave up their immortality.

What kind of Elves are you talking about?

Indeed they do have similarities, still the elf are more of the domain of the fairy tale thenthe domain of the darkness and that side of the mirror sort of speak, so not really having a common bound, if may it would be out of one is consider the good and the other the bad maybe?

just because an angel has fallen that doesn't mean they can't get up

bad fallen angels AKA evil vampires die

elves merely are angels yet to fall

and elves if they are vampires to be, well.... that is destiny

It occurs to me that a belief in one or the other takes about as much faith...but were you thinking that you wanted to make it even more difficult to believe by combining them...up the stakes so to speak? Vampire Elf? Vampire Elf Ghost? Vampire Elf Ghost Angel? It seems to me that the envelope for belief gets thinner as we add more to the equation.

I hear more and mroe things like this. Personally I'm just getting sick of it as well...

I guess there are similar things between them....

But a dog and a cat both have four legs, usually are covered in fur, have claws, have larger ears, keen sense of smell.
There are a lot of things that are similar.
But I for one am absolutely sick of kids coming up to me online and telling me they are half vampire, half elf, and that they are a daywalker and can eat as much pizza as they want. It gets really...Really old.

VAMPARIAH,

The Tolkien elves might well be equated with Angels, in terms of their radiance, fighting on the side of 'good', immortality, even their psychic abilities, but they did not 'walk up to heaven', they travelled over the seas, to escape the doom of Middle earth, since there were so few of them left to fight the new war against the darkness, (though this could well be an analogy for going back to 'heaven').

I don't recall any part of that story where Elves became fallen into darkness (other than that they became Orks), but there are other myths, books and games where 'evil', or 'dark Elves' are present.

Perhaps they are polar opposites on the concepts of good/evil and light/dark, but in most Northern European mythologies, 'fallen Elves' are most often characterised as Dwarves, who chose to live under the ground, in darkness.

It is a likely connection with Angels though, in that they were the servants of the gods, companions and worshipped as lesser deities.

Curiously, they have also been described as Sprites, Fairies and other mischeivious entities, but not evil, per se, even though they can have a bad attitude when someone wrongs them.

Though, now that I've thought on it, there are similarities to the Celtic Sidhe, who are ascribed as the vampires of ancient Britain, so it's not beyond the bounds of feasibility that they could be the same creature, or at least, the same 'kin'.

In one of the Strahd books, I know there is a reference to a vampiric elf that lives in the realm. It's been so long since I've read any of the books from that series, my details are vague. I'm going to go google it to see if I can find more information about it.

This is the best topic so far. laughing alot from it. I neevr cared for elves, I think they master the bow and the vampire hates the arrow, they are on opposite sides.

Stab, um, ah, yeah, there is a scene in the movie I think it was the third one, all the elves leave pretty much aafter their thousand years are up, and it is really a corny scene, really done poorly with bad special effects, they leave corrupt middle earth on like a ramp. But they had to go, the window of opportunity would be closed, and evil was taking over the world and it was helpless.

I can't believe you guys are actually talking about elven vampire sex. Stop that or I will leave the site.

VAMPARIAH,

In my opinion, the movie sucks much hobbit ass, but from the book, it's a bit more clear.

Being that they had been in Middle Earth for at least ten thousand years, I believe that you are mistaken.

Besides, I don't see that this topic has to be sex related.

well one of the girls said that you could get vampire elves, I thought the only way you could get vampire elves were through breeding, but I guess I had made an incorrect conjecture, all ya gotta do is find an elf and bite them, and then the elf could breed with anything and then you got a vampire elf crossbreed with whatever it decided to mate with.

Of course offsrping come from coitus. Sorry I brought it up. There is a quick spell to forget about Elf coitus, all you have to do is think of Elven procreation and then you forget about the whole thing.

Very good,

But on second thoughts, I do agree with you.

But in the case I would accept myself, I wouldn't see them as seperate species, so it wouldn't be a case of crossbreeding, any more than a European and an African genus of the modern human is so.

it depends like in d&d (dungens and dragons) they have elf charaters that are dark the drow are what they are called..... they are pale and live under ground only coming out at night because the light is saposed to hurt there eyes..... they are know to be evil.......always lurking in the shadows .... hunting there enimies...... so if you take that fictional charater of the drow and place it with the fictional vampire id say they do have simularities except the vampire drinks blood and the drow do not.........

In D&D, and anywhere else I can remember the race being used, Drow, or dark-elves, do not have pale skin, but rather the opposite. Generally black or charcoal. They are not, however, very tolerant of sunlight, weakening when exposed to it.

And in LotR, the ramp the elves are climbing is that of a loading ramp of a ship. The ship was headed to Aman, a continent west of Middle-Earth. The Elves present during the LotR trilogy are minority that did not follow the Valar's summons.

Just to clarify the point on tolkiens elves... I am not an expert but, have been reading tolkiens work since I was a child. The movies didnt really do tolkiens work justice, because they had to edit the story for the big screen...

However the elves sailed in grey ships from the grey havens to travel to the west back to the undying lands where they originally came from.
The orks are elves that were seduced by Saurons power and he twisted their beauty to the ugly orks they became...

Elves make various appearances in Norse mythology. Later, in German folklore, they were mischievous pranksters that could cause disease to cattle and people, and bring bad dreams to sleepers. The German word for nightmare, Albtraum, means "elf dream".
This aspect of German elf-belief similar to the legends regarding Incubus (or Succubus).

I do not believe elves are angels~2 different entities. But anyways, vampires and elves, again, 2 different entities. I do not see anything to this "evil" that is brought out in this subject. I could be wrong, but, I believe there is no devil, therefore, no evil beings. Evil is human alone.

There are many different types of energy-related, 'vampiric' creatures. There are indeed in myth and legend, entities that feed off of emotion and heartaches, etc.

I personally feel it is up to interrpretation exactly what a person feels they are.

For the longest time i felt I was pureply more along the lines of a strict vampiric sort-- but oddly enough, I felt more like a Changeling more and more as I've learned by practice, and by personal study that I am by no means like that-- at least, from what I see.

I consider myself a manipulator of energy-- always have been, rather I knew it young or not.

Well there seems to be a lot of general discussion about what is possible and what is not around here. Now granted I am no expert but mythology is a subject I am interested in.
Maybe I can help clarify a few things.

1) Dark elves and light elves- Tolkien did a great job borrowing these concepts from the mythos of the Nords and Teutonic Germany (ie. Vikings). Black elves were known as the svart alfar, the light as the lios alfar. The Svart lived in a realm known as Svartalfheim the Lios in a realm named Alfheim ruled by the god Freyr. Also interestingly enough there was a third subsect of elves dokkalfar (dark elves) that came from the land Nidavelir. Now here is where it gets interesting, there were some differences between among the non light elves. The dark elves were short more like dwarves and were as black as night. They were also well known for their inventions and crafts. The Alfar were like minor deities or functionaries, often marriages between the Alfar and the Vanir (one of the sets of good Norse gods) occured. They were described as light fair haired people.

2) Celtic mythology- A lot of what is deemed "celtic mythology" is a collection of epics, stories and myths that were collected around the 11 century A.D. and comprised in two well known volumes The Book of Kells in Ireland and the Mabigion in Wales. Now as the Celts didn't actually have a written language there is no way to be certain if they are indeed "Celtic" myths. These books having been comprised after the fall of the Roman empire and the horrendous raids of the Vikings. Some intermingling of different cultural viewpoints would have ensued. A lot of the stories about the light and dark elves of celtic mythology look to have been altered from the Nordic traditions. In fact from what I've read and researched into the Celts didn't believe in elves as such. In Ireland the tales tell of two different "Courts" of Faeries the Seelie and the Unseelie presided over by the Sidhe. Now depending on the story the sidhe (pronounced SHEE) were races of beings, immortals who defeated the Fommorians who first inhabited Ireland and ruled it in peace until the humans came. They ruled conjoined, the Seelie during the spring and summer the Unseelie during the Autumn and winter months. Thats one of the stories. Others tell of how the Sidhe were the Tuatha De Dannan, Children and worshippers of the goddess Dana. The only thing these stories have in common is the description of the Sidhe faery folk: radiant and beautiful, Capricious whimsical, immortaland passionate. Even the Unseelie Sidhe were gorgeous beyond belief. The difference came in was how they used it. The unseelie were cruel bloodthirsty and sadistic. They would steal babies, lure people into the bogs and drown them, bring plague and pestilence upon the land, drink blood etc. The Seelie Sidhe were just as vain as they Unseelie counterparts but if encountered and approached correctly they were more likely to bring good fortune and luck to those humans. Many love stories and heroic tales are written about the love of the Seelie women for human men and their children.

http://www.timelessmyths.com/celtic/faeries.html#Faeries - A good link to for those interested in researching
more about the Fae Folk.

As for me I believe that anything is possible and that the Fae could and probably do exist. Whether they and vampires have any common ground, I would say that it is only in the amount of people who would love to be/meet one.

come on people, don't you see them? Vampire Elves are all over the place, you have to run around on the street and pull hats off, and then you see their pointed ears. It is fun anyways, but you gotta grab their cell phones or you spend the night for observation in a psych ward.

Yes, now I remember the elven ship, it was a ship though, and the boarding was done at an angle of about 66 degrees,

how does one ever board a ship by going up at an angle like that?

Well the asnwer is this, it was a ship that flew, sailed on the winds. As a teen I used to have a map of Middle earth on my door, I have read the Lord of The Rings Two times. It was not a sea sailing ship.

As usual we are all right.

If elves give into the dark side and become vampires, then they too can fly.

Very interesting. I've often thought the same thing myself--that the two share similarities. OOOOO... I've read a book where an elf was turned into a vampire. It was in the Ravenloft series and it was written by Christie...um...somebody. My books aren't here so I can't look at it to give you the author's whole name. *cries* I can't even remember the title. I can remember the elf's name though. Jander. ..lol.. What can I say? I liked the name. I'll try to get back and give more info...such as title and author. You might want to read it. Very good book!

If we are talking about pale skin and a few other vague physical similarities why stop with just elves? You could probably make a comparison with a whole lot of other things.

When it comes down to it though Elves in my mind haven't been portrayed as feeding on people's blood, turning them into other elves once they do this and then being killed with a stake to the heart.

The undead walking blood drinking vampire...

...or the strange magical and graceful elf?

Oh, YAY!! I'm happy. I found the book. It's called Vampire of the Mist and it's by Christie Golden. It was the first book in the Ravenloft series and it was written in 1991. It's about an elf that was turned into a vampire and then traveled to the mysterious land of Ravenloft through the mists. lol Thus the title! Once there he becomes the companion of Strahd, another vampire. I'll say no more...I don't want to give the story away! It was interesting to read about an elf being a vampire though. Jander was a sun-loving creature before becoming a vampire and he struggles with its absence throughout the story.

You can buy the recently re-released book here: Vampire of the Mists. **Also, something neat...you can buy another Ravenloft book written by none other than Laurell K. Hamilton. This one is titled Death of a Dark Lord (The Ravenloft Covenant).**

I personally don't see a relationship between the two. Elves are more like faeries than vampires in my opinion...but...opinions are like...well never mind that.

I do see what you mean by the two sharing similarities...but they don't hail from the same beginnings. Elves are born, vampires (for the most part) are made...so it is interesting, but not really relevant.

I agree with you toilet duc, I have read the book so many times since i was 13 I have lost count of the amount of books i have worn out reading them... and the ships did not fly and there was no mention of angles ever! It is written quite clearly in the book they sailed by ship from the gray havens to the undying lands... and since when do flying ships have sails? So not sure where your getting that from vampirah.

well, when the portal opens for the Tolkien Elves to leave Middle Earth there is like a term for the trek.

It was like something like the midnight walk to....

I don't rememeber I read the book 20 years ago, and I took a smoke break during the movie at the time of the bad special effects. Bad special effects and good leaving Middle earth it just gets me depressed.

But they do like go UP

That I remember seeing in the movie, they go like really UP UP and AWAY. But I was having a good convo with the ticket girl while she let me steal gummy worms and I stuck them in my ear. Thank you for spelling out my name, but Vampeeps, I really concede, if you want to believe they boarded a ship upwards from the middle of the Middle Earth continent, then fine, I will meet you half way, but if you are all going to be unreasonable, then I will just drop it.

They did however go to a different dimension, so to escape Middle earth, which is supposed to be like not on the surface of the planet where we are at, so, in order to get out of that dimension I really don't think a travel by boat on water is going to get you away from Sauron. Hell no.

They Keebler Elves but blood in their TallHouse Cookies, POST is running a big scam trying to get the world into Vampirism.

Nowdays, any human-like creature can be turned into a vampire in a book; but about the elf-vampire connection... There might be some truth about that... especially if elves ever existed...
In a lot of vampire related movies (especially cartoons), I've seen vampires with pointy ears...and it is logical somehow: elves had pale skin, lived longer than ordinary human beings, had more powerful abilities...a very strange resemblance with the vampire characteristics...

I've read a book on different types of vampires and I do recall there being a vampire that was similar to being an elf. If a human gave the vampire/elf a daily amount of blood from his/her toe (The vampire/elf was only about and inch or two high) then the vampire/elf would protect that human from it's enemies.

Actually even though I was always attracted to Vampires through Vampirella comix books since the age of 5, the mystical books I tended to read were of Elves. Lord of The Rings was not the only one. I remember stories about Elves who had true love and went off to war to fight for her.

Vampires are just Elves that die for their love in a different way. Sometimes a young man is unfortunate that he lives in peace time. So I the Elf had but no choice but to become a vampire.

I don't believe in that mystical sense of a vampire or an elf. I am, a modern day vampire. We drink blood and love to do it, but we aren't immortal and we can go out during the sunlight. I also use garlic on almost everything I cook.

I guese its possible its hard to say wether they exsist along side us ornopt but I have herd of some people claimuing to be elvs. Its not impossible. Both Elves and Vampires are Societies(forlackofabetter term) surrounded by great myth. I would not be if I saw one. The traits that we have in common with them could ovously be a sighn a fear. People are naturaly afraid to pale skin andthe sorts of things connected to it. C

In Warhammer their were 3 types of elves
wood elves, high elves, and the druchii (darkelves). Each had different beliefs and lifestyles. The wood elves are the stereotypical woodland preotecters. High Elves are elves that live similar to humans but with the known elven wisdom. The Druchii are not nessisarly evil but most I would say are insane.

Elves build toys, and Vampires and toys do not necessarily go hand in hand. I don't think there are major vampire characters who actually have children, in fact are their any Vampires that have children in the movies or literature?

Yeah, Elves make toys and Vampires don't need toys.

As far as pointy ears?

The 8th letter of the alphabet answers that one. That is a personal decision that cuts through the flock of Elves and stock of Vampires, and not all Vampires have pointy ears, and not all humaNOids with pointed ears are Elves.

actually most of the people on this site do not believe vampires can be made. They keep saying you have to be born a vampire.

But, well, I liked vampires I didn't know I would be turned into one, as well as what I have found recently that there is a way back from vampirism, which is kinda cool.

I was responding to the statement of the dude who said that since vampires are only made then elves can be vampires if they are turned, but I think he is in the minority of that conviction.

I can see why you would question the comparision between the two... elves are preternaturally sharp, and they can see twice as far as a human in conditions of poor illumination, such as torchlight, moonlight, or starlight. They retain the ability to distinguish color and fine detail in these situations, although they cannot see in total darkness. They are also adept at spotting things normally not noticed by other races, such as secret doors, creatures at a distance, and signs of approaching danger. Their ears are equally sharp, allowing them to catch sounds that other races would miss. Which besides the not seeing in total darkness does sound like traits of a vampire as well...though for the most part elves are healing beings (other than of course the dark elves) Vampires on the other hand are more likely to kill you than help you...
Hope that helped your question :)

First of all, vampires have always been stereotyped, usually with the characteristics that you mention in elves.

Fact is, elves don't exist; vampires do. But not your stereotypical vampires.

Vampires and Elves? I just don't get the connection between them. Probably because there is no connection. There are so many things that share similar characteristics. But, this does not in any way mean they are connected in any way. Elves do not exist. Only in fairy tales. Vampires, on the contrary, do.

Well... One could evolve from the other. Elf could be the earlier race, Vampires could be the mutant race.

According to Darwinian evolution, after millions of years, organisms could evolve into another. Vampires could have been elves that were deprived of light, and have evolved a weakness for it in exchange for other abilities.

Elves.. I would imagine are based of folklore of tribes living by the ways of nature... hence becoming attuned to their surroundings... which is more than I can say for the majority of US whose surrounding blend into nothingness... ignorant we are to the world around us, and thus when something happens we will not survive
