I just want to see what peoples true views are on this. There are all kinds of Vampires. I have ment quite a few over there years ..What I want to know is how many of you have ment or belive that there is real blood drinking, death by sun, old world Vampires as writen about in novles over the years...How many belive in them and Why?
To my mind there are the vampires of myth and the vampires of fiction
The myth vampires were probably started with a degree of truth (medical disease or just bad hbehaviour) which then got completely out of control over years of story telling - some myths might have been just plain bed time stories or designed to keep the children under control.
The fictional vampires were just that - stories.
I don't think that either exists or existed in the form that they have ended up being described as
I believe that to a certain extent its true on the mythological vampires being allergic to sunlight, crosses. so on so forth.
Bram Stoker, made this belief real which caused people to go upon the side of that vampires were night walkers, afraid of sunlight, crosses and garlic.
with the sunlight im thinking since vampires have strong night vision and vision in general that people came up with the fact that they are sensitive to sunlight. like how our eyes dialate when we enter a lighted room or a dark room to gain focus of everything. with vampires they are sensitive to light because of the strong vision and theirs eyes are not dialated. thats what im thinking they came up with the black eyes. just a few thoughts on that.
the garlic. garlic has a strong rancid smell. its part of te onion family. for those who wrote stories on vampires and made the movies where vampires are against garlic probably thought of how vampires have a strong sense of smell thus coming up with the garlic routine. other then that i cannot think of anything else for crosses that would make them against it besides that crosses are a sign of god and well god fouled against vampires. vampiers were known to be demonous blood suckers and well the devil was the right angel of god until he fell from heaven and went to hell thus becoming the devil. The devil is against god so they decided why not choose something that represents god in its own natural element so they brought in the cross to ward off evil so to say.
okay im going to stop jabbering
on about it.

Blood-sucking, crucifix-and-sunlight-fearing, fang-brandishing, by-invitation-only, garlic-abhorring, "undead" denizens of the night are not examples of the true "Old World" Vampire.
And until or unless folks here can begin to separate fact from fiction and fantasy (by first researching the earliest accounts from those living at the time) instead of regarding everything written by later fiction writers and Hollywood as the actual facts, questions like these will continue to dominate this forum.
Nay, I don't believe in the blood-drinking, coffin-sleeping-turn-to-dust-in-the-sun vampire.Tis just a myth.

I believe that the blood drinkers of today are just that. Blood drinkers. I do not think they are supernatural beings that can fly and what not like the books say.
well of course there are many types of vampires.......not to mention the work hollywood does on the subject....
yeah blood drinkers in my view who say they are vampires and they drink blood are blood fetishers, sanguinarians who love blood. no offense. this isnt said for all of you who believe yourselves to be vampires but those who say they are vampires and when you ask them why they think that they say "because they drink blood."
This is a touchy question because the definition isn't exactly agreed upon. A real vampire is anyone who claims to be a real vampire. If you are, think, or pretend is your business and you will probably get something out of your feeling's. The real definition of real vampires differs from person to person because being a real vampires is different for each person. Real Vampires are pretty much nothing like the ones in Hollywood although sometimes a real vampires might find themselves having the same characteristics as those in Hollywood. Garlic, crosses, stakes, flying, etc. are usually agreed upon as being strictly fantasy. Some people do claim to be immortal.I'm not even gonna waste time on that topic. A lot of vampires like the night better then they do day. Many of us drink blood but not to survive. Drinking blood is one of the ways
that vampires recieve energy. Some people drink blood for pleasure or to create a powerful bond between lovers, friends, or a group of people. *smile*
the anti garlic nightwalkers who can turn into a bat and fly away is nothing but a myth
I'm a little skeptical about the existence of the vampires you decribed. If the body is dead, I don't think it would be able to keep moving around and not decompose further. I think the "death by sun" thing was just added in to symbolize that they are unholy beings. But I'm open-minded, so I won't completely deny their existense. I just find it somewhat hard to believe.
i understand against the dead body ordeal, But what i think is that in folklore. the bodys spirit lived on, like in so many information sites on how thye view vampires as being besides demons who drink blood so on so forth. the tale has it that the spirit could not rest, it believed itself to still be alive and so it keppt on, without a heartbeat, without warmth. i cant say much more on this.
The vampires of novels and legend are completely fictional. Trying to compare these to real world vampyres is like comparing a cartoon character to a real individual. I haven't met other vampyres in real life with the exception of others that I have met on here.
i believe the blood drinking, but as for the death by sunlight, fear of crosses, turning into bats and flying, i think that is pure hollywood.
Thank you , UpirLikhyj...what you wish to talk about is more of what I ment... I did not mean to ask if Anne rices Vampires are real or if any one would think that they are.. I was using modern lit. as an exp. that is all...just a way to give a sort of base frame not what they are.. I was asking whay you belive and know to be true not what has been in hollywood or writen for the masses...
RisingSun -
If you truly seek the historical origins and the hidden truth behind who and what those vlified as "vampires" actually were... then I welcome you to read my profile and my journal entries. You will find they are all dedicated to my extensive and highly controversial (for those who insist on vampires as blood-drinkers) research on the subject.
Should such spark further interest, you are welcome to message me.
No i dont beleive in bloodsucking vampires but there are people out there that do live that up to the fullest they drink blood and cut people to drink of their blood. But no i dont beleive in the turn to dust when you get into the sun vampires
I found this post hard to come up with an answer to, because i find i thard to form factual opnions without evidence of a positive answer. However, my logical side says that it's impossible.
I beleive in both real onez r jus hard to find az we can all say they look like talk act and r jus like uz except for the whole not being able to go in the daylight and drinking only blood thing and the onez that can be in day are not poserz becuz i am one myself i jus dont show it az well az i would like but they have the true feelingz that they to r one and that they are in luv with the taste and or lust of blood lol i dont no how to explain it
I for one do not believe in the Hollywood, Whitewolf, DND, RPG, page turning, garlic fearing, sunlight burning, woodstaking hype. (though stick a stake in anyones heart.. and they are going to die).
However, I do believe in old world vampires that border supernatural existance. There is just to much research out there to be rebuffed. (even if only 1 in a hundred were in some way true....) To say no I dont, to me, would mean I would also have to deny existance of demons, angels, telekensis, aliens.. etc and so forth. And Im not ready to say all of that either.
It would be nice not to keep going over and over the same subject. Thank u Upir.
everyone should read yor pages..then we could move on, but there wil always be ppl who want to claim to be scarey. fact, fiction, lifestyle. Seems to be all combined
I believe in "Old World" Vampires to a certain extent. The death-by-sunlight, cross-fearing, non-garlic-eating things are just myth.
well, I think they do exist, just not all of what we are told are true.
i must say that i do believe in the blood drinking, turn to dust vampires. I mean story's and myths had to come from some where. Most myths and legends do hold some sort of truth. Now the question is where are they hiding?
Hollywood vampires are just that fictional..real vampires are much different . there are many threads here to give you some of the aspects of a real vampire .
i have done much research on this topic over the years and here is my summary:
back when "Vlad the Impaler" was around, including the years before and after his time, there was a disease related to the black plague that made your skin become VERY allergic to sunlight (this part of the disease is still around today) which in turn cause the people to stay out of the sun during the daytime so they would only go out at night, which in turn made their skin pale. this disease also attacked their white blood cells causing them to die. the people then began to drink the blood of animals hoping to regain their health (so the believed)
now here is what u can thank hollywood for:
--- steak through heart
--- allergic to garlic
--- sleep in coffins
--- lack of reflection in mirrors
in my opinion, the only TRUE vampire was the man himself, Vlad
what was the disease?
-Did you know some people relate bedbugs to vampires as well. its really odd, but bedbugs live in your bedsheets, well anything really and they take small amounts of your blood leaving tiny little bumps.
"how many of you have ment or belive that there is real blood drinking"
of course there is "blood drinking" anyone can ingest blood. Death by the sun? etc. Immortality? bullshit, nothing is forever. Vampirism is not a condition, I see no evidence to support that it is, it is just apart of the human psyche, psychological.
death by the sun? perhaps if you suffer from sun poisoning, etc*
now I will toss a srocket into things...I dont recall the details but does anyone remember a while back when some one dug up the bones of a so called "Vampire" how do you think this times in....
I do know for a fact that their are Vampires of differant kinds such as a Phsy. Vamp..I have meet them...That isnot what this thread is about...I wanted to know others view on the human form, walking undead like kind...I have my own very strong views on the matter I just really want to know yours..
The "old world" type vampire sure, why not! There isn't really any proof that they didn't or don't exist! The hollywood kind, well we all know hollywood makes everything extreme to make money! As far as them finding vampire bones, I would love to see them!
is it just me or do we not have threads asking the same question over and over? Maybe phrased a tad bit differently, but still the same..
i forgot to point out the whole cross thing in my last post....my bad
Well- most of us grow up surrounded by the faerytales and old wives tales of witches, ghosts, gobblins, and well- vampires. How did these stories get started, if there was nothing from which they orginated? A rumor is almost always based off of some honesty. With the amount of times the stories of vampires have been retold- whose to say they don't exsist? Thats why I believe- because theres no proof that vampires DON'T exsist.
no proof they don't exist? how do you prove that something does not exist? you cannot prove a negative. one could just as easily say that you can't prove Smurfs don't exist - though we all hope they don't.
I never rule out the possiblity that something may exist, even if just for the reason stated before me: "how can you prove something doesn't exist? You can't prove a negative." Sorry if I wasn't completely accurate in quoting that, I was a little hasty in clicking the response button. lol At any rate, I can't say I fully BELIEVE in the existnce of real, authentic vampyres- it's more of an odd form of hope, I guess is the best way to describe it.
I think its made up from thing that certain people dont like. I mean for instance. I dont like the sunlight and alot of peopel dont. Garlic smells bad and crosses dont bother me but being such a powerful religious item it is believed that it hurts them. Vampires are nothing more then people who have to have some sort of extra energy to function. Blood and psychic energy to a vamp is like caffine to a coffee addict or crack to a crackhead.
The REAL Vampire Has Nothing To Do With What The Movies Show You...
That Is ALL Nonsense.
Oh there is real blood drinking alright....I am one that does such things. Death by sunlight I am not so sure, but I do have an allergy to the sun that was diagnosed by a Dr.
Well I am a very open minded person and believe all things exist in one way or another. It's hard to say what is fact or fiction. Hollywood has blown everything out of proportion and makes it all gorey and gruesome. I have meet people who believe that they cannot go out in the daylight because it sets their skin a fire and yada yada. This is a very touchy subject. One will never know the truth of it all because of our society. If a true vampire or werewolf existed, would you actually think we would read about them in any article? Think about, because of our society they would be captured, torchered, and and experiemented on until it was to late. If they do inded exist they would probably keep their secret, secret. Just my opinion. Just because we can't see it, does not mean that it does not exist.
nothing to has done more to romanticize the image of the vampire and to make the vampire larger than life than hollywood has, the hollywood vampire is just that, pure fiction. I do consider myself a vampire because I suffer from the classic symptoms of vampirism, including--sensativity to sunlight and thurst for blood, I do eat garlic however and am very much alive and have a crucifix on my wall. I have yet to turn into a bat and as much as I love coffins I sleep in a bed like everyone else. A part of me would like to believe that the hollywood vampire exists but its scientifically impossible, Old World yes, hollywood no.
I agree with you....those are the same symptoms that I have when it comes to my vampirism, but I dont have a crucifix on my wall since I am wiccan...
There are many culture that have stories of real vampyres that come way before even christianity even the native people have the windigo. I do believe in real vampyres but not as those who pretend to be vamps today most now are more psy vamps and everyone is to a certain degree because everyone needs the energy of others from one time to another
I dont think that there are vampires like what movies have come to portray. I think those images of supernatural creatures were created out of the mind of people that simply enjoy reading or watching something that might scare or intrigue them. Same as all the horror movies you see all the time. Do you think those are real too?
This is a world where peeps try to immitate others, that they want to be? I believe once upon a time the real Vamps were more open with the regular Humans. But as time went on they lost their trust with Humans due to Jealousy and Dissent. So they had to go into hiding. Leaving a Society of Vamp Wanabees so to Speak. So for the most part nowadays being a Vamp is mostly a state of mind for most Peeps. As far as the real Vamps go I dont know if they are Immortal or Not? But they do live longer and age Slower than regular Humans. And the Garlic and Daylight stuff is all Hollywood. Vamps are Nocturnal Beings so naturally like the movie "The Lost Boys" perfectly quoted "Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. It's fun to be a vampire" Nothing says it better than that.
Ossat: Vampires these days are mostly nocturnal yes, but we are mostly light sensitive, and some of us have it worse than others. The sun on our skin can make us feel like we are burning, and the sun does give us headaches. But the myths of garlic and all that shit is just that...shit
Oh ok my Fault thought Daylight was just a myth, can it be Fatal though?
well i somehow believe that there are real vampire.. there was one in russia and he is a politician, i forgot his name but i heard about it years ago... and vlad tepes...
about the novels, anne rice tried to picture out her vampires as real (try to see her website) there were parts teling that lestat writes to her... but then again, we know how to differentiate fiction from facts....
Well if we can agree on 3 things;
1. The Bat Thing Is Pure Mystification of the Persona
2. A steak through the heart can kill anybody
3. Using Sun Screen is Purely cosmetics
Then real vampires would drink blood as the history goes. That the blood passion is real and practiced.
And to some the sun is an enemy if very fair skinned
Crosses are only a problem if the are polished metal and the individuals eyes are sensitive to bright light.
Garlic can have even the most God fearing mortal running for the hills.
And sleeping on earth (ground dirt) is practiced by every camper who roughs it in the woods. And soldier on patrol or recon.
Yes Vampires are real given and the culture practiced (Life Style)
Hey it's 5:55am and I've been on since 7pm the day before so if I've missed something, douse me in holy water and call me a hearse.
Ossat.
While I have never heard of a fatal case of sunlight to Vamps, I do know I myself am extremly sensetive to it. Sun poisoning can happen. it just makes Me very ill. headache, nausea, skin burns easily.
hope that helped.
As I do believe in the power of magic,
i believe that a dead body can really walk and even have powers as mentioned in vampiric literature and other common things... Hard to explain but a mind can be much more useful that most of the people know... And through this you can really gain powers... But this lacks a lot of time to train, usually more than mortals have.
-About the crosses and religion... why should someone be harmed by this if he had nothing to do with God, mortal or vampire...?
-garlic? try to find someone who would like it´s smell... Heigtened senses and that smell, try to imagine...
-Sunlight... hmm... This is what i believe in... Vampires are used to be called damned or cursed... And this can be a part of this damnation... to be divided from the human kind and left in the darkness forever
-next, Immortality... I mentioned the power gaining... so i accept immortality of vampires...
As you can see I am nearly 100% sure that vampires exist in their most vampiric form.
Hello,
Yes, I believe in such things. Why?, You ask? I have had dreams, comformations, facts and reality.
question: if there was a real, death by sunlight, drinks human blood to live, and hunts virgin blood, how whould they servive today?
how would some that has been alive for say 120 years get a drivers licence, or a car for that matter?
How could they do simple things like getting smokes with no I.D?
not to mettion keeping the media tabliods off you butt because your pushing 200+ years and you still lookng like your 20?
no, the vampires spoke of on this thread are fictional.
this is why many do not beleve in vampires.
I think the Old World Vampire, as you call it, was created through symbology and is therefore fictional. Those vampires were supposed to be creatures of hell, so, because the sun supports life and is seen as good because of that, they said the sun would kill these creatures who were supposedly damned. And people were very scared of being buried alive back in those times, so they created the vampire to sleep in coffins and rise from their graves in order to deepen the "scare factor". Those are just a couple of the connections I've made.
Hello, Everyone. I have never met a real vampire, but I have just found out i belong to a vampire who really does drink real blood and has fangs. he is a member of VR. It freaked me out when he told me, but then it i became very interested in everything that had to do with it.
to me..... I believe to some extent(sp?) that vampires are real... Blood sucking yes.... Death to sunlight or the myth or what not with that. No I do not.. Neither with the garlic stuff.. I agree with what some peopl ehave to say though with there are diffrent types of vampires out here in this world of ours.. But still this is a kinda tricky question.. Wether believein or not if vampires are real.. I'm prob in the middle of it. of sayin yes. but then agian no.
Real vampires as defined in lore and legend do exist, albeit they not particularly common, and have been chronicled by clergy and other researchers down the ages.
I refer you Montague Summers' works The Vampire: His Kith & Kin and also The Vampire in Europe.

If you read Innana Arneths write up about that...she goes by Vyrdolak now and her article is in our ezine: http://www.thegraveyardpress.jswebpro.net
She goes into all the superstitions.
I do not believe there are any immortal vampires. This is from folklore/mythology, the church and superstitions of under educated peasants in the far past.
As for drinking blood, it has always been a minority in the Community. Some of the major groups now are preaching against it. I have never known anyone to die for lack of blood drinking and why? They drink it for the lifeforce, prana, chi or whatever you want to call it that it contains. This can be gotten from other sources as well and most do. We tend to over eat when we don't get these purer forms of energy that aren't caloric. Many groups won't even let sanguines join such as Temple of the Vampire, but its just their viewpoint.
Some are sunsensitive to sunlight and others are not. I am one that is and I have a glare problem.
Many like the romantic idea of immortal vampires as in stories but most of the time it is extrapolations on superstition and all the garlic stuff came from Hollywood. In the movie of Dracula they were using wolfbane.
I have a reversed circadian cycle and most of my family do. We are sensitives most of us and some empathic. Even if you are not aware if you are a vampyre you will take energy from an unconscious level, and so will sanguines. Most of us NEVER get enough outside energy and many are ill with all sorts of things because from what I have experienced it tends to compromise the nervous system and the auto immune system. Is there any science to back this up no but when people have similar problems over and over again...you have to consider that perhaps this is involved. Biggest complaint is migrains.
Vampyres are born the way they are and not ever turned and we frown on people biting or trying to pass that on as a way to become a vampyre.
The vampires in stories are NOT the real ones...they are myth. Just like how they persecuted the witches of old. Superstitious people who built up a whole lot of folklore that plainly wasn't true. I'm writing a novel about vampires and its different as far as I know than other novels...will people start wondering if I got my idea from reality...come on can people be so gullible? The older books cite myths like the stuff in the database here.
I have had people swear there must be a real Lestat and I tell them I know that he was a stereotype of the type of Vampire Anne Rice thought she would like to be if she was a vampire. She has stated this. He is made up...all the characters are made up just like the ones I am writing about.
So if people want to believe such things they can but I can tell you the Vampyre Community doesn't take too kindly to people spreading such things. People are still using the term Nosferatu. When someone uses that I know they are a role player and not a vampyre because if you study anything you know that came out of Bram Stoker's book and out of another book he read and Elizabeth Miller and other authorities on his book have said that it was an error the first author wrote. She misunderstood what she heard said and that word hasn't even been used that long anyway. Since I think the eighteen hundreds. Its not a word. Could have been a few others like Noskeratu and some she mentions but that one does not exist other than by a mistake and taken and put into Bram Stokers book and that is where everyone got it from.
So no I personally don't believe in novelistic vampires because that's all they are and many things made up in Hollywood and folklore.
I don't believe in the hollywood version of vampires, but as I've mentioned in numerous forum responses I am a vampire by religion. I'm actually an official in a Vampuric Agnostic "Cult". I put cult in paranthesis, because I don't consider us a cult but lots of people do.
i beleive anything to dow ith werewollves, vampires etc are all exagerated stories that have evolved from truth that once existed. i dont think we'll ever know the full truth unless Vampires are to bcome a real community and well told civilisation, no matter how small or wide spread.
I think the idea that there might be real vampires is rediculous. I would love the though that there may be a superior, lustful, vampiric species out there, but there just isnt.
I do believe that there are Vamps ....there is so much on Earth to beliee so why wuld it be so hard to believe in Vamps? There is someting of the day so why not the night?
If they are real, they probably really good hidden or are almost extended...
it depends if you're talking about the mythological Hploywood vampire or the modern day vampyre
Well.. I dont know.. and I'd go a step further and say that not many of us do KNOW.
As far as what I believe..there are so many different definitions of what makes a vampire "real" and what makes them "myth" its hard to sort out.
This answer might make me seem incredibly naive..and maybe I am. But for all of us who claim to be "open-minded" ..where do you draw the line and say "No I absolutely do not believe that _______ exists"?
Where do we become closed and say it "can't" be...
Faeries? Other nature spirits? Ghosts? Demons? Angels?..........Vampires??
Blood drinkers are for sure real...unholy beings...yep.. are they all considered vampires? It depends on YOUR definition..
Whether or not the shape-shifting, sunlight fearing, garlic hating vampires DO exist.. I'm not gonna walk around with a wooden stake in my pocket "just in case"...
