Every single person has faith in certain things and people, as well as faith in religion, and some do not. To have faith is to have "firm belief in something for which there is no proof (Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary)." Faith can be put into objects, friends, family, and worshiped religious figures. It is a very powerful feeling, nonetheless. What do you put faith into, if you have faith to begin with? How far can faith go? Is it something that can be learned? Do logic-minded individuals have room for faith? Is there any value in faith? What part does doubt play when it comes to faith?

I'm an extremely logical person, but my intuition serves me too.

I have an immense faith in a few things beyond myself, and that faith has carried me through when I'd have fallen otherwise. So, whether or not the tenants of my faith are real or not, the faith still has value.

Faith is unconditional trust in something.
You can have faith in a lot of things, like you said. Faith means knowing ot will be allright no matter what.

Faith can be a very touchy subject for some. But usually, faith depends on the individual who holds it. Sometimes, it is directly proportional to the amount of willpower they have, and other times it is inverserly proportional. It is this very thing that makes the idea of faith a rather difficult issue to discuss. However, if you want to know more about it, look deep inside yourself.

Faith….

I think this word can mean many different things to different people. To some, it almost immediately invokes a religious feeling, belief in a power greater than yourself. These people trust that it is there, even when there is no solid proof that he/she/it exists.

To others, it has a more secular meaning. From trusting in friends to always be there for you, to more trivial things like believing the weather forecast (it’s snowing?! It’s supposed to be 75 degrees!) and giving your money to people you don’t know on ebay and trusting them to send your item, faith can be applied to many things.

While these are all different in a way, it all boils down to one common theme. Trust. Having faith implies that you trust in something, without any real evidence that says you should be doing so.

I think some people are inherently more trusting, and thus usually have more faith in things and people. Skeptics will always be skeptics and I don’t think TRUE faith can be learned. Maybe some can begin to trust after loyalty or reliability is proven time and time again, but if it takes that much convincing, I don’t consider that real faith. There will always be a shred of doubt in the back of their mind. Faith isn’t just a common kind of trust. To me, faith is absolute trust, devoid of any doubt. Those that have felt it know the difference between simple learned trust and true faith. You just KNOW…rather than being pretty certain.

Going along with the above, I believe that this also means that there is no limit to true faith. If there is no doubt present, than why would there be barriers? If you truly have faith in a friend, for example, than it shouldn’t matter to you whether you let her borrow a dime or borrow your brand new car. You know she will give it back, and in the same condition it was in when it was given to her. If you would hesitate, I wouldn’t call it true faith. Maybe you trust her…but not fully.

As was already stated, everyone has faith in something (even the most logical people I know have it). It is something deep inside each individual, and can be a very personal thing. I don’t think any one person experiences faith exactly like another, although there are common themes. Faith can carry you though some of the toughest times in life. Having such a powerful feeling of trust can do wonders for your mental well-being, I think.

A little faith can go a long way…

My two cents anyways ;)

Faith (whatever it is) is important, in my opinion... because it gives you a realization that there is something bigger out there than YOU. This is not only humbling, but it instills a value and appreciation for things that you may not (most likely do not) have otherwise.

Maybe you are the type that refuses to ask for help, even when you REALLY need it. If you do have a belief-system, I think you will more than likely be less stubborn in getting help if you need it.

Most belief-systems I know of all have some sort of meditation techniques. Rather you call it prayer, meditation, energy absorption... the value in it is scientifically proven to relieve stress.

Sonnet: Faith

A man with faith can win the world with ease;
A war is won with faith in its soldiers;
A leader with faith brings about world’s peace;
A faithless man always has unknown fears.

Strong faith can heal an adamant disease;
Faith in oneself makes one self-confident;
Faith in religion and God gives mind’s peace;
Faith alters in our favor, an event.

Faith is needed to maintain good friendship;
You ought to have faith in a stranger too;
Faith in the captain brings to harbor ship;
Faith is needed even to win a coup!

Have faith in the man for earthly things done;
Have faith in God for Heavenly grace won.

7-18-2000

Faith is an interesting thing. I think we all have to have faith in order to keep going. Every time we sit down, turn on the light switch, get into our car, walk down the street, we are exersizing faith that things will go the way we forsee them. If we didn't have faith, we'd never do anything. We'd lay in bed, a puddle of fear, too afraid to even get up and use the toilet. Living is faith.

But, more precisely and more in the spiritual realm, I have faith in several things... The force of will that all men and women may exert at any time that many people refer to as "prayer", "science", and "witchcraft". I have faith in the power of love to heal wounds and cure pain, through time. I have faith that there is something or someone bigger than me who loves me and made me for a purpose. I have faith that there is a plan, even though I don't see it right now and may never see it. I have faith in those who love me and whom I love.

I didn't read anyone else post cu i did not want it to influence or change my though but i will read after i post.

In order to have faith in anything or anyone you need to first have faith in yourself. if you cant or dont have faith in yourself then how can you possibly have faith in anything else. whether it be a person or object or a spirit anything really. just have it in yourself first before you can anything else.

Well I dont have faith in poeple ( no offence to anyone) I have been deceive to much, religion well I do have faith in one, (not the one ppl like mostly the most hated one) I also dont have faith human kind.. I know I sound like a depress emo...sorry about that. I am a person of extrem logic, even if my emotions overcomes me most of the time, I consider faith to be a strong vertu when put on the right or for the right thing or person, I know some have faith that go to the point of killing for theirs, hurting others or abuse others's trust to furfill their goal in the name of faith...I guess I am pretty sour, but I do have faith... just not at the moment and not towards the most commun beleifs.

Faith can take on many forms, from religion to friendship, to business dealings to just having faith in your own abilities. This is the faith we learn as children when we learn to walk and climb and play. Our faith changes and developes even more as we age and learn more of the world. As an adult our faith stretches to cover many people and things such as a faith in the legal system to work good or bad in our friends, family, workmates and so many other things. The one thing I am sure of is that everyone has faith in something even if it's only a faith that nothing will go right or be fair. That is still faith.

I feel faith can be put into anything you so choose. And the more you believe it, the better it'll work. But any negativity also counteracts that faith. So all in all...I feel it's good to at least believe in something...something to draw upon when you really need it and no one else is there for you that you can trust or what not.

Faith to me can mean many different things, and so far every post here has hit on most of them, be it... religion, yourself, others, or even the faith that you will wake up tomorrow. Faith is something that gives most strength when we need it the most, whether we believe in a higher power or not, our faith guides us along a path.

Most do have faith in themselves, yes. There are very few people I have come across who do not trust themselves, and it is usually those who need that boost of self-esteem.

idbeholda- Wonderful response, very diplomatic. :) You said "Sometimes, it is directly proportional to the amount of willpower they have." Are you saying that in order to have faith in oneself/others, there must be the will to do so? I always though faith was just one of those make it or break type things. Not so much willpower, but an instant development.

SilverEthereium- Wonderful first post! I agree with you about faith going hand in hand with trust, but there are times when even I find myself trusting a friend or family member with a piece of information for example, but little faith it will remain in their hands only. As far as it not being something one can learn, I am with you 100%. I have a family member who was into some bad stuff, went to jail, etc... now he is a "religious fanatic" and tells me all the time that "Jesus is better than any drug". Perhaps in times like this faith is a compensation for something that cannot or should not be had?

imagesinwords- Excellent point. Just as I told the above about my reformed family member, I completely agree with you for certain individuals who do need help, their faith in whatever it may be in will undoubtly help them out of whatever poor situation they may be in. I see it as a mind of matter type of instance.

lusciousbbygrl34- Excellent point. True faith begins with faith in yourself and then stems out. Maybe those who put all their "faith" in others and not in themselves are not experiencing true faith.

CryingMist- :) Sis, you follow my favorite quote "Dependence is followed by weakness." Perhaps faith is a form of dependence?

rogue599- If faith can be so easily put to a stop just be a little negativity, it probably isn't real faith. This is where doubt plays in. To have faith in something is to inherently trust that something will be there no matter what, and that should not be broken by small occurences.

imagesinwords, you nail down a point with such eloquence. I agree with your post and couldn't have said it better.

I would add that even people who do not admit to faith certainly have it...you learn it in your primer of life. Mom will feed me again; if I say hi, she might like me; I'll drive the freeway and make it to work on time.

None of these have more "proof" than even the religious types of faith. I suppose there may be a completely blind faith, but the closest I can come to that is when all prior evidence points the other direction and still the person believes. I was going to use an abusive relationship as an example, but even there, faith relies on some evidence to the person (even if it's faultily recieved and interpreted) that the abuser will meet a need they have.

The only "blind faith" I can imagine would be to randomly choose some object or person and build hope around it. In religious faith and in secular types of faith, some logic is usually applied based on interpreted evidence that might not meet scientific definitions of "proof" but which are enough to satisfy the individual.

Any scientist that marries demonstrates faith in that partner based on what he believes he knows about that person. If we put that under a microscope, pretty illogical choice since most marriages end in divorce and that humans are notoriously difficult to predict.

Got Faith?

Faith is friggin sweet. Anyone who doesn't have room for it is too full of hot air (humble opinion). I have found it to be an amazing ally in multiple situations. This may be mildly disturbing, but go with me on it.

I have learned that faith and logic can go very deeply hand-in-hand. Not too long ago a friend of mine told me of a co-worker when he worked in california who firmly, unyieldingly believed God was a chicken. The scary part was the fact that he used cold, hard logic as his basis for such a belief. From what I understand, they since have gained a bit of a following out in sunny CA of chicken worshippers... lol

Joli - I do believe that there is more proof or at least anecdotal evidence that I will get to work faster if I use the highway as compared to proof or evidence that some immortal geezer in a white beard and robe is going to allow me to live forever in paradise if I follow the right version of his commandments written by various guys and various editions in another country 2000+ years ago.

Man's logic is not perfect logic. I have learned to accept this and not let it interfere with my faith. There is something out there beyond ourselves, and it gives me the fortitude to hang on or move on, as appropriate. Faith provides a window to see and seize opportunity that logic and other might blind us from. It also provides a method by which to learn and a standard to which we can aspire.

I only have faith in myself. My creed has always been if you want it done right, do it yourself. I don't like putting faith in other people because they're flawed. They could let me down. If I don't do it , then I only have myself to blame. I don't want to be held accountable for the actions of others.

Faith is what keeps us going. Knowing that there is a "higher power" that we can sense and look to, something to believe in. It is just what you want it to be. I have seen this first hand in people with cancer who have come back from the brink of death. I have even saw one instance where the cancer completely disappeared from the person. Faith is very strong. Just believe.

Well Love,
without faith, what would be the reason in living unless there was something promised to give you the need to keep going. I doubt the faith in everything because there are so many religions that offer so many things, so which one do you believe if the right one to believe in. An atheist would quite possibly have a quite articulate view on this topic.

With Chaotic Love,
Solea

By that definition I would be totally without faith.
Why should anyone believe in things not proofable (or is it proveable?). There is obviously nothing to be gained by believing, in the end it's just some kind of distraction from the facts.

i think faith is there to help us. that which is unknown and untouchable gives us a sense of safety. something somewhere is looking out for us. I think that when one has faith they can do anything their heart desires.

I have faith in many things. and i try not to be a disbeliever in anything because everything is possible.

If u lose faith, u sure can get it back. when the time is right. u will know. and u will find faith. and it doesnt necessarily mean faith in God or jesus only.

"What do you put faith into, if you have faith to begin with? How far can faith go? Is it something that can be learned? Do logic-minded individuals have room for faith? Is there any value in faith? What part does doubt play when it comes to faith?"

My Lady,
To begin to answer you questions on faith I must start with your last question about doubt. With doubt you can not have faith. Faith is not something you learn, faith is something you feel. Many people, actually, all people have faith of some sort. Faith is not related to believing in a certian diety, it is believing in anything. I have faith that I will post this on the forum, therefore it is true and an accurate representation of my faith in myself for finishing something. Faith can not alter. True faith is hard to come by. But this is a most interesting topic. Very well choosen and great questions.
Lady Titan

There are very few things in which I have faith.
1. My Partner - I know he has my back, no matter what goes down.
2. Myself - If I can't count on myself, than no one can count on me.
3. My love for my daughter

WOW, FF, deep one here. Let me see, I feel that faith can go far if you remain positive. I have had my faith in individual crushed before , but still came back around to have faith once more.

Depression....this held my faith back alot.

Negative people..Negative time...Negative space...

When I stayed busy, I did a complete 180, so I guess as long as the actions are positive, faith can carry you, push you, and pull you through anything. Be it religion, person, system, substance.

Faith is Vitality.

wow.. how to put this into words...
For me faith and trust go hand in hand.. I have to trust to have faith in it..
I am a Pagan, I trust that my faith in my path and my beliefs will help me no matter what... Yes there have been times that i have questioned myself and my choices.. but in the end, through my trust and faith, all was right and it helped me restore what i already knew...

It would seem however that the opposite side of the coin must hold true. While faith can in fact hold people up and strengthen them against things in life that try to bring them down, faith could also be turned into a crutch. If one holds onto faith in the face of every bit of evidence against it, then one is choosing ignorance over knowledge and truth.

Take the example of someone suffering from spousal abuse that has faith in the ability of their love to fix things and change said abuser. Would not faith be more steadily contributing to an overwhelming possibility of their own demise? And if evidence continues to show contrary to their faith in the power of love, wouldn't faith begin to look more and more like willful ignorance?

i have faith in love. anyone has the ability to love and it is not judgemental. it is love. unconditional and unlearned. you are born with it and die with it. whether you submit yourself to its power or not. it still is a part of you that everything possess. without love nothing would exist because its power and peoples faith in it is limitless. people are willing to die for each other just because of this limitless, and powerful faith in a thing called love.

without a doubt- this is my faith.

I also believe in having faith in yourself as a person, it goes a long way to developing yourself and becoming a balanced being.

I personally before anything else put my faith in God. Faith can go a great distance, It can lead you to make life changing decisions. I belive that people can learn faith, otherwise why would majority of people convert? Or become babtized? I belive myself to be a very logical person, I try very hard everyday to make logical decisions about things in my life, but my faith in God and many other things play a huge part in my life. And in my opinion there is most definantly value in faith, my faith has gotten me through and many that I know through some VERY hard times. Faith in my opinion is a large part of many peoples lives, even if it is just faith in your friends or that things will be ok.

I've got faith in myself and Mother Nature. She always surprises me with the abilities she has. It's not a blind faith in it, but it comes pretty close to it. Even for a scientist like me.

I think that nothing can be, or has been proven. So everyone has faith in everything. We have faith that the world is real, that it is as we see it. When you think about it, we are made of atoms, which are made of electrons, which are made of electricity that blinks in and out of existance at the speed of light (deepak chopra). So when you think about it, we are blinking in and out of existance, everything we know and feel also does. There is no knowledge, there is only faith. We are more connected to the energies and emotions we feel. There is more 'realism' in spirituality and religion, because that is in the soul. We know that the soul is real, because it does not exist in the physical plane, so it doesn't blink in and out of existance like everything else. Thusly, all there is is faith.

I believe that faith is essential to people's well being. Not everyone, of course, but many people need something to believe in because it gives their lives; their actions; their decisions meaning. In that context, faith can be a n extremely powerful force.

I myself think that faith cannot be learned. You just have to believe it. No one can tell you what to believe. That would be unacceptable. Faith can be put into anything, and if anyone has a problem with what you believe in, then they do not believe in their own faith. I know that sounds backwards, but if they really had a belief in a God or whatever, they would let others believe their own God. You know?

I believe that at a yonug age..we have to decide what we believe in..otherwise we have people deciding for us. Things change as we get older, we believe in more things or stop believing in others...but we have to decide what we believe in and how far our faith goes. I once believed in a god..but now with current and past happenings I have lost my faith. Im sure faith can be retained and learned again, but we still have that doubt.

Your ability to be faithful to an ideal of which you have no proof defines who you are. It doesn't matter if the faith is mainstream or not...it could be faith in anything.

Just by giving faith to something you show that you are willing to embrace the unknown. That is an admirable trait.

i think that faith can go as far as you belive it can. you can have faith in your faith. i do think that logical people who only belive what evidence supports can have faith. they have faith in what they think the evidence shows. one person can look at a piece of evidence and convict someone and another person can look at the same piece of evidence and prove the person innocent. they have to believe that they are right.

What do you put faith into - First comes first, family, blood. I put my faith in them first and of course myself. I put my faith in myself, that I have enough faith in myself that I can make good judgements and decisions. ; I also put faith in spirituality or rather the existence in spirits.

How far can faith go? I'm not really sure how to answer this question, however I believe that it could go as far as your will let it I'm guessing... *shrugs*

Is it something that can be learned?
I think that can go either way... If it is a religious faith, then one either learns through reading the scriptures of that religion, or faith is something experienced through personally.

Do logic-minded individuals have room for faith?

I am a very VERY logical person... I'm surprised I didn't go to school to be a scientist or something b/c I constantly am trying to disprove something or prove that something is right or wrong in logical fashion. However, there have been many times in my life where I have experienced things that just do not make sense and that are unexplainable. Things that have either made my life better or near death experiences where I should have died but somebody or something saved me... So, I believe that when things like this happen to someone it causes them to have faith in something that is not totally logically valid.

Is there any value in faith?

*shrugs* I guess the value is having some sort of sense of being, or satisfaction in knowing there is something MORE than what is here in this physical world.

What part does doubt play when it comes to faith?

Doubt comes when someone for some reason or another decides that what they have put their faith in does not exist or something/one has wronged them, therefore the validity of that faith becomes either extinct or recalculated.

I see alot of people talking about faith in themselves... what about the faith that you can't seem to find in yourself. It is not about promoting yourself, faith is a belief. You know and feel that one day you will have a good job. That if faith. Faith is not something that has to be self involved and it is not something you automatically think of it is something ingrained in your soul.

Faith: unconditional trust/something that is obtained through teachings and studies/ it is belife of a person, i trust in myself i trust in the gods i trust in the heavens i trust in the magick i have this faith in its existance! this is something that we stand by and live for it is what many would say "it is what i am, what i know" to change well would be unthought of by some so they say they keep faith in the things they live for.

I have faith in the support and love of my family. I know there is nothing in this world that could ever beat me down, because they will always be there to keep me up. I know I will never want for anything!

Faith can be a very touchy subject for some. But usually, faith depends on the individual who holds it

What do you put faith into, if you have faith to begin with? How far can faith go? Is it something that can be learned? Do logic-minded individuals have room for faith? Is there any value in faith? What part does doubt play when it comes to faith?

Faith is all a person thing.
I don't even go so far as to put faith in myself, because it seems to me that I've done some things I never thought I would do. I put more faith into the people I love. They always are there for me.
You can have faith go as far as you want. For some people, god is their faith. They go so far as to die for that. What more could a person do for faith?
It's not really something that can be LEARNED so to speak. It has to take time sometimes to have faith in someone or something.
If you have faith in something, then there must be value in it for you. If you feel there is no value in what you have faith in it, then why have faith in it at all?
Doubt can completely control the faith you can potentially have in faith. If you doubt yourself, then there's not much reason to have faith. You need to have complete confidence in my opinion to have true faith in something or someone.
This is just what I think.
