i'm working on figuring out what the "book of shadows" is, but i'm supposing it's a spell book... if it is, then that's what i'd use.
the book of shadows is the best book. it also depends on what kind of spells you are looking to use.
I guess it would depend on what sort of spell you want to cast ...
That book of shadows (website) is offline at the moment but the online store is still available.
Thanks for the input artemka.. Very helpful for those in need of knowing..
I also agree that it depends on the spell needed, and what your doing it for as well...
However there are some who do not use a book to get spells from but do However make their own if you will in order to have it more suited to the need and the individual doing said spell..
I use one that use older spells and potions methods, I don't much trust the modern things that well....
Somewhere in my apartment, I have a CD Rom with like 5000 spells on it. If I were to do a spell, I suppose I would look there...or perhaps one of the many craft books I have on my shelf.
I'm eclectic enough I don't care where the spell comes from as long as it suits my needs.
A Book of shadows is not only a spell book, but your journey through your earth based beliefs. Always a journal of herbs and their magicial uses. Also the colors and the days the colors represents in your spell work. Then you own words of your spells and writing down their effect. So a book of shadows is your own personal entries. Thought I would add my 2 cents.
well i don't do anything with black magic. well thats not exactly true, but nothing bad though, i just study the defensive parts about it. i would probably use either my own book of shadows or someone elses as long as i know them well enough to trust what they put in it.
I would say that it certainly depends on what type of spells you are looking to work on what book you use; most likely your experience has something to do with it as well.
Like has been mentioned, all depends on what kind of spells, etc.
Book of Shadows is a fantastic book. I also have a victorian grimoire and have my own grimoire with spells and such from a very dear now departed friend.
None.
Honestly.. even the hermetics had to admit, that you can't preserv magic like an instant soup or alike one would just need to fill up with water and cook.
Either you carry inside you, whats necessary, or you have to learn.
All else is not working for me and in my opinion.
a shiny one that has spells in it for making things happier and prettier.
a big thick unessarley huge book with a pentagon on the cover
I go through most of my books, & find the spell, or spells that are most suited to my needs. Or making up your own i think is allways very good.
I would refrain from using other people's spells. Personally, I am not a spell caster. I do not discredit the ability to use spells, but I think most everyone has meditation, prayer, and wishful thinking, that can be more powerful than a spellbook found at the local Barnes and Nobles.
a book of my own spells or spells that i have collected
I've yet to find it, its probably only a myth, but I heard its called by a few names the most common "The Shining book" Supposedly a book of rune based spells, blessed by Baldr.
It all depends on the types of spell you are looking to use.
I have spellbooks for charms, enchantments, protection, curses, and others.
You can make a Book of Shadows. An actual BOS is not the same for everyone. Every witch or spell castor makes his or her own. Spells can shared and handed down among witches. The BOS can be an expensive leather bound book (ala Charmed), a simple 3 ring binder, or a folder on your hard drive. The Wiccan BOS begins with your rituals for each Sabbt and Esbat in the year as well as the Rede, and sometimes the Witches' rede. Other rituals can include Wiccanings, Handfastings, Drawing Down the Moon, and Drawing Down the Sun.
i'm sure it's been said here already, but a BOS is simply a collection and should be, more importantly, your own collection. any spell that you create is going to work far greater than any spell someone else creates..
I do not use a spell book. Never needed one. But I would love to get my hands on some of the old, lost books from way back in the day. lol
A spell book is/can be a book of shadows... I use a hand made leather journal with hand made paper. It really could be any thing/book you feel comfortable with.
yes i'm the same as BloodAngelX on this one. never needed one but i write down my spells on random bits of paper if incase i need them again.
I would use my book of shadows.... all it is is a compilation of the spells that have worked for you and have helped in one situation or another.... I would use it because at least I would know it wasn't laced with a hidden spell to hurt someone or myself... (yes i am paranoid...but it's deserved,,,)
You may not need a book true... but I its to have a memoir or possiblly something to pass down/ or along to someone special.
Depending on what your trying to do, the book of shadows is okay. You also have the lesser Keys of Solomon. the book of toth. Mathers' grimoires. Read anything by Crowley, that ought to help.
I was going to say a dictionary just to be a smarty pants hehe.
However book of shadows is the best, talking to friends and fellow witches is another. Making your own is the best thing to do.
Working on my own book of shadows..
Taking a lot of input here on VR as there are many Wiccans here.
A BOS (book of shadows) is a spell book! My personal BOS that I have been working on is 600 pg+ and getting bigger everyday.
i have a book called the "book of shadows" "a witches handbook" it teaches u to write ur own spell but it has some really good spell in it" also a good one to learn to make ur own spell and rituals is "complete book of spells"

For the most part, I would have to agree with scorpnoir. I believe that what people consider magic comes entirely from within. That being said, I think many are unable to realize this, and as such require something to use essentially as a focal point. Which would give spells their use, however the source would matter far less than the person's belief in them.
ok i must admit i have had a few different spell books, many tried and all failed. i think that to do spells and make them work you need the gift within yourself.
i obviously dont have it, but it was alot of fun trying them out.
A book of shadows is good. but evryones is not the same. in the BOS you put spell you've done and/or want to try.
nice zilverscale.
One has to really think about yourself. The things you would want to cast, the kind of person you are. In my opinion the reason I cannot find the book I am seeking is because I am not worthy. It is a book, of good, nothing evil contained within it.
i used to write my own spell book, garnering information and spells from a variety of sources. i think it is important to write your own - even if you are only copying it from somewhere else - by writing it in your own spell book, you are are personalising it.
Well it depends on what kind of spell you wanted to cast I suppose....however the book of shadows would seem like a good place to start
my spell book is just getting started. mainly i wnat them all to be non ritual spells, maybe a few rituals, but it is to be a bokk of light. My spell book is there tohelp me and guide me.
Well I would use My Book of SHadows that I have been working on and adding to for about 10 years now.. ANd I also have other books on spells and candles..
It does depend on what kind of spell you are needing and what the situation is...
I am currently in the middle of composing my own personal book of shadows. If I use any spell it comes from my own heart and soul and then goes directly into my book of shadows. No one should use someone elses spells. It is much more personal and more effective to create your own spells.
I use one that I made it hold more value to me then any "store" bought book and is completly custome made :)
i have a couple of spell books i don't think they are anything with fancy names or such but they have done me good in my times of need i will repost with the names of them
I usually make up my own spells.. I find that they have more power because your own intentions are behind them, as well as your own energy.
Dark Greeting's,
My Spell Book is my Grimore
My book of Siegel's my Book of Shadows.
Every one has made good points, about writeing it in you'r own hand.I make paper with different colors and herbs and flowers, all haveing to do with the spell type.
KA
Use of a grimore (book of shadows) is ment to be a book of things that you have learned or something that you find that has help you on your journey. A grimore doesn't have to be just speels it can be a journal as well.
It supposed to help be a guide on your journey to knowlegde. Most people end up having several volumes over their life time.
You can make it yourself or you can use any note book, peice of paper, etc. it is what you make it
i would use a self written one. Spells work because of an individual's will and their belief in that spell.
i have my own personal one that I've cultivated through many separate steno notepads and leather notebooks. I have kind of a "master book" that i keep meaning to put in all of my usefull spell and recipies into, but i'm hella lazy ;)
very nice...i feel the best type of spell book is one that you make of your own with your own thoughts, words and feelings..i have a massive spellbook that has acumulated for 5 aught years it just takes time, patience and the knowhow to will certian spells.
other books are good for refference but i would definately recomend one of your own as is would be more personal and meaning when spellcasting.
First of all the book of shadows was a genaric term for a ritual book kept by witches
the grimore would be the same for a personal spell book
you should do reserch on what types of spells you want to use and keep a constantly changing grimore
add spells as you go
you may use the published book of shadows as a reference.
but im not a fan of that book
do what you feel is right for you
I have used many, I have created my own I use what I need from all types of books I usually prctice white magic but dark has also played a fair role!
I use as needed!
I would only use spells that I had written from scratch or modified to fit my task and beliefs. I would never use a published spelbook with out editting. There are too many dangers.
Dark Greeting's,
I have hadmany books of spells, and found it impossible to make them one.believe it or not when I tried pages went missing and changed piles. That is why I write the ones I use the most in a special book.Like others have said you will have many over the course of you'r workings.
KA
The spell book I would use is my other half Jamaican voodoo.
I use my personal book of shadows it has a front hard cover made of a optical ilution a black holographic ball in a black frame great for scurrying and linking with the spells inside on a personal matter.
I've used all kinds of books. And the spells find that like I put in my book of shadows alongs with a jouneral I write in. For those of you who doesn't know what a book of shadows is it can be just a note book that you use or a binder with dividers for different parts of your book of shadows.
A spell book should be a book that means something to you or that you create on your own... if it means nothing to you then it will be nothing to you
most of the books u find at book stores are crap, unless you are at a real occult bookstore
i use my book of shadows.. which is a personal thing.. it is a collection of spells and things i have learnt and experienced on my pagan path
asi alredy said that book of shadows is a way to make money off a term that has been around but only means a book of rituals would you buy a rock that was labeled "the rock tm." then its really not worth it make your own dont use some generic excuse for your own grimore
same here i have my own spells they make them more powerful because they are part of you so my grimiore is the only book i use or i use my small book of healing which is also another of my grimiors
it depends on what ur using it for.. there are many different kinds of spells used for different things...
i have spells that have been passed down to me which i am now in the process of passing on to some one else .. im a hedge witch so i tend to write my own and add them to my grimwar
I have several suede notebooks that i rough out spells in, some steno notebooks, but I have a large leather bound book with parchment paper that i write in everything that's *worked* or any other little tidbits. It's the Mast Book :)
I tend not to use spell books created for commecial use as they tend to be all airy fairy spells i tend to use my family book that has spells from the late 1700's to now.
books who needs a book except to keep track of spells if your not able to for many reasons this may occur
I wouldnt trust a book that the public could use .. I am sure many of them wouldnt work , but you never know.. It all depends on the level of the witch or warlock doing the spells .. among a few othe details to ensure success of the spell
I have heard that you should always create your own spell book and that the best magiks are passed on through word of mouth rather than through common public books.
the spell book that I use is the nocturnicon and the gothic grimoire. However, if there is a spell in a different book that I like, I will use it also. A friend of mine once told me that when chosing a spell book you should walk along the aisle and go for one that seems to call to you rather than going there with a specific book in mind. She was right. The books that I'm drawn towards are noctural in nature and of chaos. These spells work better for me than the ones that I went there to buy just because someone recommended it.
I found the solitary witch had some good spells in it and they are easy to use.
Chrisg I have that book satanic rituals and found some of the things in it kind of complicated but not bad.
I pull my spells from my own personal book of shadows, it's been a long time in the making, but it's finally got everything I could ever possibly need.
I actually don't have a book, I know my spells in and out, and know the price I must pay with my body for using them. That was one of the reasons I mentioned the Shining book, I was hoping someone here might have known about it.
I use my Book of Shadows to write down the final version of a spell. You never know if you need some adjusting to a spell and I want to keep my BOS as clean as possible.
Book of Shadows would be my suggestion, tis online as well.As time goes by you can use that as a template of sorts and expand by useing yer own talents in spell casting.
The ones alreay mentions are the most pertinent, like book of shadow and the craft, also one not sure but it was called Le grimoire blanc, a french book, still searching for it, but never could find a copy, saw it once in my life I was 12. so it was some time ago lol
Book of Shadows has been mentioned a million times here, and seems to be the fav among most...just do your research and your first inclination is usually the best.
If you include tarot spreads as spells. Then I am starting a spell book per-say. It is in a graph paper lab book I got. I have a few extras so when I build up a good amount of custom spreads I can just transfer them to that one.
So I do not know what to really call it.
Spread Book
Spread Journal
or what else could could call it.
Since every spread I make helps me understand more about the cards and what they mean (even if it hurts me head for a while).
I'm reminded of the book Tarot for Dummies for some reason...
♥
Though I have not used that book at all. Seen it but do not have it. Nothing like learning with what comes with the deck.
