Most people know that the antichrist is supposed to bear the number of a man "six hundred, three score and six" [666] (revelations: 13: 18) ... so we know where it comes from

But this open to many different interpretations;

some Christian Eschatology folk believe this will be a brand marked on people's foreheads or hands to be able to trade during the reign of the antichrist

Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that the number is symbolic of governments

Aleister Crowley took the number to represent a name (his)

Now many, many people on here use that number in their screenname - so what significance does it have to you ?

As ever let's have some dignity and respect in posting here folks, this could touch on other people's religious beliefs.

I have heard of many different topics concearning the meaning behind the 666 therory .. some believe the antichrist is supposed to come from what is now concidered modern day Iraq.. Some therorys also claim that many of the modern day leaders themselves fit into the antichrist .. such as one of the Cesars.. sorry cant remember which one of hand .. but he was concidered as the most brutal.. Also Stalin and Hitler .. So there are many possible therorys out there .. In the end I guess we shall never know until it happens

In my opinion maybe it represents something that will be massively used and will make a change... and will make a difference between people...

From what I have seen, and understand, people use it as a form of displaying the number of the beast.

This may or may not shed some light on the subject as I am going to condense this quite a bit. For those that study numerology in the Bible number have an important part. 3 is the number of the trinity, 5 is the number of grace, 6 the number of man, 7 is the number of completion, ect. The reason that 666 is the ultimite evil number is because the anti-christ is mans choice over Christ. Since it is a man the number chosen is 6. Since it is the anti-thesis of the Christian Trinity there are three parts, the anti-christ, the Beast, and Satan that supposedly make up the Unholy Trinity making the numerical representation of this body three 6's or 666. I can go into more detail if anyone would like but thats the condensed version.

I think the number 666 has become something of a self made mark to show disrespect to the church of Christianity in general. Our generation has much to hold against organized religions and our subculture (goth, darkwave, punks, vampires) have always been placed on the short list of things the church doesn't support. So in many ways I could point to the churches of most religions and say "you started it". That being said, the 666 seems a minor infraction when it's a screen name and not actually tattooed on someone. Either way, I think the reasoning on our end has more to do with thumbing your nose at the moral powers that be and not so much about trying to show actual allegiance to any anti-christ or the 'whore of babylon' even if she is a real goer :)

the number 666 was to my understanding, will be visable for all to see on a person when the antichrist comes. In revelations it does speak on how thoes who do not have the marking will not be able to travel, buy goods, and that they will be condemend for refuseing to have this marking.

Personaly I dont buy into this, Im a pagan who grew up in a christian church, and what I belive is that it was just a scare tatic from the church to make people scared and worship there religion. I could be wrong but that is how I feel.

all i have been taught is 666 is the number of the beast. I was never told how this came to be but reading this thread has shed some light on the picture. I have also been told that it would be a brand marked on us at the time of armagedion to show which gate we shall pass through

I saw this tv show on the History Channel that said it's all not true. Oh well...who knows what to believe.

I think that any person who wears the mark should at least know the significance of 666 beforethe use it to look cool.

I'm not sure what significance this brings, but there are many numerical and mathmatical parts of the bible that were misinterpreted when the various translations were made. The Theologians doing the work were not necessarily up to speed on anchient Greek and Roman mathmatics which were actually quite sophisticated.

First I would like to touch on the post that Dovyenda has placd.

He says that the unholy trinity comprise of "anti-christ, the Beast, and Satan" yet in my opinion they do not. Satan himself is said to comprise 3 parts so would satan himself not be the unholy trinity. Satan is supposedly made up of the following 3 entities Mephisto, Bhaal and Lucifer.
The word "mephisto" is supposed to mean death and he therefore is the lord of death. The word "bhaal" is supposed to mean great evil and he therefore is the lord of evil. The word lucifer supposedly means defier and therefore lucifer is indeed the lord of deceit.

As for the number 666, i really cannot see what significance this may have and do agree that it may well be this due to 6 being the number of man and three of them to represent the unholy trinity.

your post has something I haven't heard in that way before - I knew that for everything holy there had to be an opposite unholy thing - so the holy trinity almost has to have an unholy trinity.

Why would the unholy trinity then have the number 666 if the single number 6 refers to something as simple as man(kind) - does the use of that number always mean the chosing of evil of over good

I see your point about the unholy trinity - but it would be difficult to have a trinity out of one being no matter how many parts they have.

I think that it has to be the opposite of the holy trinity (father, son and holy ghost) in order to fit in with the 'there's an opposite of everything' . So you'd have to have Satan - his son and whatever an evil Holy ghost is

Yes artemka you may well be right. Mephisto (mephistopheles) was indded an archangel before he sided with lucifer. But i do not think lucifer was a cherabim, i am sure he was a seraphim "Gods Chosen".....

But when "god" chose manking over his angels, and the angelic voices became boring to him, lucifer (the defier) chose to lead an army of angels to thwart god on his throne. Obviously this was a fools errand as lucifer may have been defiant, but he was most certainly not strong enough to defeat his maker.

ok so the trinity that is mentioned in your article up top refers to the The Devil, The Antichrist and The False Prophet as the trinity of the 666...but hey any belief in religion is automatically a new theory right so go with it ;)

As to the 6, I believe again we're talking about the number as it relates to 7 (perfection, the universe, the divine)...in that respect, 6 represents man because man is imperfect but 6 can also represent other relations to 7...imperfect meaning proud, opposing, emotional which are all associated with the infernal. Why 6 as opposed to some other number? Don't know. I think there's something in the Wiki article that also speaks to 6 being just short of seven and imperfection being short of perfection but really...1 is also short of 7 but just by more :)

666 is the sum of the squares of the first seven prime numbers which again juxtaposes 6 and 7. Thing is, with math and numerology, you can almost make anyones name or date of birth multiply or divide or add up to 666 if you work at it hard enough. Math can accomplish anything you want it to with enough steps and that's one of the reasons why I find the 666 thing to be such a crock at face value. I would tend to think that the 666 is metaphorical at best and a bad code for something else at worst.

Well said felix. I have to say that i didn't even realise that 666 was the grand total of the first seven prime numbers. That just shows how well ancient civilisations really understood mathematics really.

menerfecious - gematria is the hebrew numerology and involves a huge knowledge of numerological relationships but it still strikes me that as long as you know how to add, subtract, divide and multiply as well as have the freedom to use dates, names, birth places, and even sentences like "The Emperor Domitian violently killed the envoys of Christ" and spell it out in additional languages in order to then apply numerology or roman numerals to it, it seems that 666 could be applied to anything.

I was a Jehovah's withess for over 16 years so without going to much into details to me it means simply imperfect 3 times, as the number 6 itself mean imperfect as 7 is to be perfect, therefore if it is put 3 times in a row it means really more then imperfect it means 3 times imperfect, this one of its meaning as it being related to the "beast" mainly it is in the way the beast is to be consider imperfect and representative of imperfection. This is my 2 cents as a person who was a Jehovah's witness for several years.

666 is indeed the number of man. I don't put a lot of stock into it personally other than my traditional background (christianity) that states it is the number of Satan. *shrug*

It doesn't hold a whole lot of stock for me, but then again, the whole religious concept doesn't hold a lot of stock for me anymore.

It's my personal thought that people put 666 in their user names to reflect a certain part of their personality. Most likely it's a "rebellious" kind of mentality with which they express themselves. It's the same with those who is "XXX" in their user names.

It's just a number. My fave number is 333. It's no big deal.

It`s more than just a number if you have been reading previous posts you should understand that. there certinally is a lot of mythology surrounding the number.

As we can see differnt people have very differnt views, Im not sure what to believe about 666, the most common refernce the people make is that it is related to the devil, The only thing i can think of is how that maybe true, is firstly the holy trinity, but as artemka said everything has an oppsite.

So therefor holy trinity (father, son and holy ghost.) oppisite ( satan, his son, and an evil holy ghost.) but how can a ghost be evil and holy. because to be a holy ghost, usally that means its been purified hence getting rid of all evil. so how is it possible to have an evil holy ghost?

well even though i have a diffent opinion now, i was brought up to believe that the number 666 is the number of the beast, that we as humans will be marked during the time of the reign of the antichrist, if we dont have the mark we die, as i belive to be another symbol and a way of governing over people as well, for government control...

I am not really sure how the Christian church came up with the number but I believe it has been well covered...

What it means to me.. well like so many other things I believe its been used for shock value.. and because people think bad.. evil when they see it and other people are looking for a reaction. Well those that are not useing in in a religious way that is.

I remember last year when everyone was all like "6/6/06! OH NO!!!!". Nothing happened then, just like nothing will happen today. *rolls eyes*

Anways, my fascination with the number 666 only surfaced after hearing the HIM song "Your Sweet 666". It was the first song I ever heard by them, and I instantly fell in love with the band. I knew when I heard it, as I know now that they were not saying "I'm ready to take Satan or evil in my heart". It's a metaphore (which becomes apparent when you watch the interview w/ Ville on the DVD containing thier music videos up through Love Metal, Razorblade Romance, and Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights).

There is NO religious significance to me, as I don't believe in Satan or God or any other single deity religious figure. Come on people, the Pope was a Nazi, how can you have faith in a religion that allows a former Nazi to be the closest person to God alive?

Its clear that to some folk its just another number and its mention in the bible is of no significance but to others it has some meaning (the most common one being its use from the 'Omen')

In all things it is one of the few passages in the bible that are really specific (about the number) maybe that number's use can be open to interpretation but the number itself can't.

well to me the number 666 when i look at it see it as a symbol of power but being into numberology i also see it as the numbers 18 and 9 as well. i think it's all up to each individual to how they perceive such a number particularly with all the myths and folklore that has been spread.

Out of New York City there is a radio program called "Radio Lab"...that is where I got this information from.

In short, 20 years ago they found writings that had been buried in the middle east that predate the bible. They have spent the last 20 years piecing tugether and translating these writings. They found that, in these writings, the number given tu the beast is 616 NOT 666! Scholars from all walks have come and examined these writings and have declared them tu be authentic, so much infact that when the next version of the Bible is printed they are CHANGING 666 tu 616. Someone made a "whoopsie"!

Anyway, 666 to me has always meant the symbol of the devil and used by many people to symbolize their worshipping of the devil/satan/antichrist. Some people put it on their profiles, but I highly doubt that everyone that uses the 666 on their profile are all devil worshippers... That's what I've kind of grown up believing...

the bible has several numerical refernces and most are 3's and sevens btu the 666 is only referenced one time in revalations so its true meaning is still a mystery

The Vatican website don't make any announcements on future changes to the bible, neither does the Church of England website

The number 666 has no specific meaning to me. Just as Dec. 25th is a symbol, I believe 666 is a symbol also. It was used to symbolize the beast in chrisitianity.

I don't know about the whole 616, 669 etc. stuff, but I am a Christian myself and I studied Revelations last year as a hobby.

The only thing it says is that 666 is that it's the devil's number. It doesn't say that people will be marked with a "666" on their right hand or forehead during the reign of the Antichrist; it just says that they will be marked. And during that time, all of the believers and worshipers are suppose to go to Heaven and the rest will stay on Earth with the Antichrist. Those that are marked will not be going into Heaven, but those that aren't will be persecuted and they will be going to Heaven.

No Christian is certain of what the mark is. Some believe it is the number, 666. Some believe it's a bar code. But in the whole book of Revelations, it just says that 666 was the devil's number. Other than that, we'll just have to wait and see.

Yeah, winterdarkmoon, it use to bother me, too. It still kinda does because I'm so close to my god, but I don't really care anymore. It's their opinions and nobody can change them. Plus, I still don't see anybody on here with "666" in their name. I really want to see what they say!

It doesn't bother me or affect me at all. To me, it's just a number and nothing more....untill something falls into play and proves the beliefs to be correct.

I cant speak for everyone but if you are a Christian and seek knowledge, you kill your faith. You cannot have faith with knowledge...the more you learn about how things actually are and knowing how you were taught while growing up...well, I began to question my faith because of it.

I really dont know. I think its bogus and i cant remember what was said in the bible. I have see so many shows with the number, and all sorts of theories and prophecies. I m just waiting to see if any of it is true and if it really happens. No one can really do anything about it.

The bible makes it clear that the mark of beast will be needed to allow you to trade during the reign of the 'the beast' (Revelations 13:17)- it doesn't actually say you're going to fall into a burning lake if you've got it - as you say people need to pick up a bible one day and really study it

Man can make just about anything fit into his theory. We manipulate information to fit into our theory. I did it during my Master's classes and will continue to do so for my doctorate.

But, we also have free will and can choose to believe or not believe.

No, that is the closest I could find to 666 and aries. I believe that the link to Aries is in the constellations. If you look at the second link you will see the constellations being used again in connection with 666.
