A. What does goth mean to you

A) Goth to me means being dark, moreso in mind than in appearance, although many times dress comes into play too.

B) Personally, I wear almost soley black, and wear a lot of leather also (long coats, leather pants, etc.). I paint my nails and used to do the whole makeup and eyeliner thing, but stopped after I got my teardrop tattoo (it was too much trouble anyway, lol).

C) Nobody in my life really gives me a hard time about being goth. It bothered my mom at first, but I think she's accepted it, lol.

To me being Gothic is a lifestyle, I have the darker side of me that makes this all the norm for me.. I often get looks because of the way I dress or because of my outlook on life..

No one gives me a problem with it other than those people who think that just because someone is gothic then they practice witchery and tom foolery as they like to say here in my lil town..

Doesn't bother me what they think Because I could truly care less what anyone thinks of me or my beliefs because who I am and have become make me the person that I am..

To me goth is a way of life, it is not something you can turn on and off when you feel like it, you are either goth or your not...

Goth: Is an opinion of those of whom relate closely to death, magik, and the ethereal. Of the depressed masses, those that laugh at funerals, enjoy All Hallow's Eve as our new year. It is that place where we tend to feel better about ourselves by being completely differant than the rest of society. With a srong fascination for the macabre.

Personally: I have been wearing black before the term "Goth" existed. I have been wearing skulls, ankh's, charms, pendants, leather and trench coats way back in the days of junior high...I am 30 years old to give you a hint. I only painted my nails in High School and sometimes on All Hallow's. My lifestyle is questionable at most. As I am a universalist, I tend to go for the darker sides of life, but still stay with a bit of mundane flavor. The music I listen to is on my site...That should clarify alot. Knee high boots are optional, I prefer either docs, or anything leather. My hair has been long since I was 3 years old.

Family Matters: I grew up around Metal, Goth, Industrial, and over all open minded people, a crowd of old school stoners. When it was alright to smoke a bowl, or light a pipe on the street without the cops coping a b*tch.

Personally, to me 'goth' means being who you want to be, and not being afraid to embrace the darker side of life. It doesn't matter what clothes you wear, or what music you listen to. Although it does usually follow that anyone who's into the darker things also likes darker clothes and music.

my idea of goth is someone who wears black all the time. Listens to death metal and has bunches of peircings. My family is not approving but screw them cuz half of my friends are goth

I love the gothic way/image.unfortunately its something icant get away with.being blonde haired and of fair skin,it doesnt work for me.But i do think the gothic rocks

To me Goth is more a way of life and really doesnt have much to do with how you dress...i mean i dont dress like most people think goths do but i still consider myself one because to me its more about enjoying the darker side of life rather than just wearing black

I wouldnt identify gothic music being death metal or metal of any kind, I mean it can be but the true gothic music played at the clubs and most places isnt metal or even related. I guess some gothics do listen to that genre but its not as prevelent especially in europe

I've never actually considered myself goth but more and more lately people are asking me if I am. I just kinda dress the way I dress. Yes I have a tendency of wearing darker color clothes. Yeah I'm kinda pale... it's not done as an attempt at HEY I'm GOTH! But you know what... if you want to give me a label, there are worse ones out there than Goth.

1) to me its a mind set, very close to punk personally, very anti-establishment, and non-conformist, the difference is that goths tend to pay a lot more attention to having a fashion trend....

2) industrial, metals, anything dark and hard edged music.....dark colors, sometimes luxerious fabrics, like velvet.....more of a reclusive lifestyle, but with carefully arranged appearances...

3) Most ive incounted usually joke like "what are going to funeral or something...?" to me, which i reply "yes, yours in fact..." So there is alot of tention here where i live....being a mostly goth oreinted person.

a. goth is a mind set not so much of appearence..personally i find it interesting that ppl treat me differently now that i dress to wht their standard of "normal" is and they think my mind has changed..its like an experiment..they percieve u differently but when u talk 2 me im still the same demonic bitch i've always been =]

b. i used 2 dress in lots of tripp clothing and listen 2 all metal bands..still do..dress has changed a bit as i had explained previously

c. people arnt accepting of it here, and i honestly could care less.

A to me goth is a life style that you make on you own it may be dressing up for the part, listening to certain band /music that are goth to others out there, or it could be how you act on a daily basis as people could label u as a goth based on attute you show to people everyday.

B. it effects me by the people I hang out with on a daily basis they are always listening to the same music as I do and always share the same opinions as I do when it comes to life and that is how goth effects me in my life on a daily basis.

C. since my friends and family share the same life style the opinions are always the same on alot of things so in the end it makes no difference on anything there.

A. Goth to me is a love for the darker things in life.
B. For me this is (as are many things) expressed in my mode of dress. I like music with dark lyrics, but not so much the crunchy death-obsessed ruckus that most "goth kids" are listening to these days. But then, I'm "Old Skool." ;)
C. My family sometimes tese me about wearing black alot, or about medieval stuff, or whatever, but they pretty much have learned to deal with it. I'm not exactly in the Broom Closet with them either... They sort of take it as it comes. But I'm not a kid anymore either. If I were still a teen-ager, it'd be a different story.

it to me is not just a lifestyle yet to be free to be yourself and I do not feel all gothic is dark black and gloomy LOL it is many things to me.

2 me gothic is seen through the eyes and not how we dress. it the old soul in us.

To me goth is a way of life and it's different for everyone. It has gotten away from the stereotypical black clothes with white makeup and black eyeliner. Now it consists of people that may dress in bright colors but visit cementaries in their free time. It is ever evolving.

I don't like the term 'goth'. to me it just means someone depressed and vain. I mean really, do you realize how long it takes to look like that?

To me goth is someone who can see beauty in the macabre.
That death is not scary;
that you will not fear death and thus live life fully.

Some people need the trappings to identify with this; others do not. There are some that will are easily identified as macabre and full of Life without the trappings; but a good part of being goth seams to be mocking the mundanes, like a skulls mockery of a grin. Death mocking life, or rather... those that pretend to live.
So the clothes and other trappings are somewhat important in this role.

Frequently I wear a t-shirt to the club that I made myself that says,

Goth to me is something inside, its deep down, not about outsdie and apearences, a fireman can be goth and do you see him going to the firetruck with big military gothic boots, with studs and spikes on it, stud bracelet, and collat, eyeliner and bondage pants and all??? Imagine that when you house in one fire, ....but still when the fireman is not on duty, then its a diferent thing, so would you say he is not goth?? I think he is.

Just like military officer, dont think he/she can be goth? I think she/he can, just not showing it when not in service.

I would have to say for myself at least, mindset, i wear mostly black, but even that, isnt enough, i work in an office, so total goth, is a bit.................. inappropriate....

A.) [Keep in mind I'm 15] I agree with cryingmist. It's something deep down. An attraction to The Dark. A feeling as well as a lifestyle. I think there are people out there that are goth inside but just don't show it. I think of goths in 2 different groups: 1) Teenagers in tripps and skulls that become part of the norm as they grow up, and 2) True goths that stay that way for life and are attracted to the goth subculture.

B.) Mostly clothes from Hot Topic I guess.

C.) My dad is the only one who doesn't like it and coincedently the only opinion I don't give a damn about.

A) Like alot of people have said....to me Goth is a lifestyle choice. it is something deep down that you feel and just are. I feel people can mimick the look and things....but the choice is what makes it real.

B) The clothes...for me it is just anything that is dark. I have a wide virety of clothes (most dark or black) and some of them are from Hot Topic. But to add your own style is what truley makes it yours.

C) Not that anyone in my family is very appreciative of the idea, but they all accept it. They pretty much accept me as I am. Which is cool because now....finally....I can be what I am.

Well, I don't see myself as gothic, but I'l take astab at this one....

1) Gothic, to me, is accepting that dark things have thier own beauty. That they need to exist, to counterpart the light, airy things. Gothic says that a well carved tombstone can be pretty and meaningful in the way that, say, a wedding cake can be. The thing that the 'norms' don't seem to get about the lifestyle, I think, is that Goths aren't evil, or insane, just because they can appreciate the dark things.

2) Music, art, movies, whatever- I think what makes something 'gothic' is a celebration of the above things. Over all, I think that a gothic art form (of any sort) is the type that reminds you the dark exists.

3) My family is pretty accepting of the fact that I ain't normal. Maybe it's because my family is a little bent, themselves. *laughs*

I too agree with CryingMist, I work in a Social Serives office so wearing an outfit like i'm going to a funeral would be totally inappropriate anway (not that i don't absolutley love the clothes!!)...it's all in the mindset, i look like a perfectly normal person (most of the time:) but i enjoy goth music, goth culture and i'm really into the paranormal, vampires, myseries etc

Goth was labled goth because the people who were into into it liked dark music, dark clothes and dark things in general, i think if a person is going to be into a scene they should act like it, i think goth is what you listen to, how you dress and what your into, and if your not into thoes things then you are not into goth...

hard to say since I am not goth, But like many fasits of live I do believ it is a way of life for them and a belief, like the jocks or bad boys of my era. A true belief in what they feel and believe in.

That's why I don't always wear gothic clothes and show my true self,if I have a job interview,I wear a suit.For school I wear comfortable clothes so that I can be ready in 15 minutes and not worry about my looks,school is for the grades after all isn't it?

Sometimes we have to do things we don't like even if it means to wear a mask(metaphoically speaking.)I learned to accept it.

Liking diffrent tyopes of music and ppl that wear alot of dark colored cloths and keep to themselfs more then having a social life. Its pretty sad but its not the way this world should be......

In my opinion, "goth" is a just a label, something someone came up with at some point to group together certain people with similar styles of dress or interests.

It ranks right up there with "prep," "jock," "geek," "bimbo," and every other label that really has no place outside of high school.

to Me it basically means its just a lifestyle thats all it is. we live and breathe it everyday.

I never have to wear a mask, because i do not pretend to be something i am not people either like me how i am or they do not i really do not care but to say that you are goth is totally different then to like goth, if you say you are goth then you should act like it because the goth scene was made to be dark, not to pretend you are goth one minute then normal the next, and if you like goth but your not into it then you can do whatever you want to because you are not really part of it, and the only people who would be mad at this post is the weekend goths...

A) Goth to me is a lifestyle. You live the life of someone who lives outside what is considered the "norm" whether that be via dress, music, etc.

B) I try to wear a lot of either black or dark shades of colors. Music, I tend to listen to stuff like HIM, Lacuna Coil, and Evenescence...so the dark moody music I guess.

3) My family is completely non accepting of my choice of living the goth lifestyle. They think that if I wear a dark outfit I am most certainly depressed and suicidal. My friends just accept the fact that that's who I am, and I'm not gonna change.

Ahh, the goth posts...always make me mad *sigh*. I tend to agree with Kglitterous, Everlasting, and Scipio as to my views. I don't feel it's simply a choice, it's the way you relate to and see the world. A dark view of the world and an original one. We always tended to be the outcast art kids that got made fun of (hence all the woe) but we were also very accepting of the other outcasts. Very polite, intellectual and slightly holier than thou when it came to mudane folk.

Basically a love of the darker things in life. The clothing was a reflection of that. Now I have to wear my "work drag" so I don't really reflect that much darkness, but it's still there because it's just my personality.

Most people are accepting of that and it doesn't really affect my life. No one gives me a hard time and my family never really did either.

Goth is not a clothing statement like most people think around here. Its an additude.

My dress is what you will ind in hot topic. I like the way it looks and its comfy so.

My Family thinks its a joke and my friends just don't care.

Personally goth to me, is a personality, a state of mind....for most just a style and type of architecture. It's beautiful, not always dark....Goth, is just another label in some ways, and a way of life for others.
It isnt any different then being a "Thug" or "Emo".
the style has always appealed to me, along with the attitude that can come with it. Make up...meh varies form person to person. some look good with it, some dont. I dont LoL

Goth is different things to different people, as all the posts above me prove, but I see it as more of a personality/attitude thing, a state of being.
The word Goth, gothic music, clothes (specialized Goth clothing) Hot Topic, black eyeliner, etc. Some of us were goth way before any of this even existed or was considered "Goth", so it might make up a lot of what Goths today happen to like or prefer, and helps people express their Gothiness, but it doesn't make you Goth. It is maybe a Goth "style" that more people are getting into now that it is available, but wasn't always available and some things still aren't available to everyone.
A lot of Goth people happen to embrace darker things and can enjoy them. They can see the beauty in dark things that perhaps some can't.
I personally don't feel they HAVE to be that way 24/7 to PROVE that they are goth(the style part that is, the personality is there regardless)
Part of being Goth is NOT HAVING TO PROVE you are Goth.
To me Goth is kind of like ying/yang. You embrace both the good/bad, the dark/light, angelic/demonic, normal/paranormal.
You aren't afraid of who you are and don't care if others are, but yes, there is a time and place for everything. There are people and places that we can express our truer feelings/styles/personalities. We enjoy ourselves and feel more comfortable when we can do this.

When I think of the term Goth, I actually recall its origins first and foremost..... the tribe that dressed in all black and made their attacks on enemies at night as to better the surprise attack, and protect themselves.....

Now a days I think it has come down to being a trend.... and if you are goth you can also be considered, punk, or emo..... I personally dont see how punk fits into there..... but whatever, its actually considered that when labeled....

I also think there are two types of Goth..... there are the emo goths, and the trendy goths..... By using these words what I mean is this.... Emo Goth..... a person that is always depressed and dark, the sterotype of the goth.... by trendy what I mean is the person that likes the look, likes the style of clothing, etc...... If anyone were a true goth in todays times, they would be an average day Joe that dressed in all black and stayed in the shadows to protect his tribe and family at night...... Ahhhh how the things have changed from one thing to another as time goes by. lol.

I am not goth persay. I do not judge anyone on who they are.

Being Gothic to me is more in my own mindset and the ability to be who i am.. a INdividual

well it really depends on you what it means and what it entitles. To me it is being true to yourself and not letting anyone tell you what to wear, listen to or what kind of piercings&tats you have. goth is beautiful and i am new to it i have never worn black at all but my bff has changed me so much it is really like a new me and i luv it!!!! so in conclusion goth is whatever you make of it. kissses&deadlybites always

well, goth is from the barbaric group called the goths, it is also the building structure in Europe somewhere, but to be, goth is just a label that other put on you, which is an insult, seeing that you are who you are, and everyone is different. So if everyone is different, then why do you all have the same label? You see, I consider myself dark, and dilusional, but for me, I would not call myself goth. It is a stupid label in the labeling world. The music you listen to is what you like. Whether it be Satricon or Britiny Spears, it does not matter, but for me, I am into the metal, rock type of thing... clothes, i think this is what you would call goth

goth is more of a frame of mind that outward apperances. i do not look goth but i am. but if you really think about this topic goth can be just about anything.

Personally i have never seen a goth wear white and no one i know would be caught dead in white, but that is me and the people i know, most of the people i know who are into the goth lifestyle wears black, and i know that their are goths out their that can get decent jobs wearing what they like but i also understand that some people have to dress a certain way to get a job they want, but what i am talking about are the people who say they are goth and do not really act it, until they go out on friday nights so they can get attention then on the weekdays they are totally different, it seems like everyone today are saying they do not like labels i mean that is getting really old, i think by now people know that everyone does not like to be labeled, well atleast some people do not...

A. My personal definition; Goth is sub-culture of obsession. The object of obsession varies from goth to goth.

B. I've never been a fan of goth music. Too nasally. The fashion's good though....mostly.

C. What was "C" again? Oh yeah. Well, that's sort of like asking what my friends and family think of flying monkeys exploding from people's butts. After the shock value wears off, it's just kinda....eh. There's a flying poop-monkey. That's nice.

Gothic is a lifestyle, a way of thinking. Not the way you look or the "mood" you give off. You don't have to wear all black and shop at Hot Topic to be Gothic.

Goth as a culture is a of mind, that is influenced by other life minded people. Just as with any culture.

They still have no idea what or who I really am. Its funny because they just go along with it anyway.

to me Goth is a way of life, to be dark without necessarily being sinister (but there are certainly those that are VERY sinister). Music/attitude/clothing/makeup can be as dark as you want, your very air of mystery as mysterious as you want. Its almost like putting on a mask, a costume, in a way, letting the world see only what you want them to see.

Ive always loved black, ever since i was a little kid. My family of course hates it but my husband dosent care, he likes the dark clotes and makeup. Music is my whole world....i love goth metal, but i also love classical music, jazz, blues, etc. Its a mind state, and you can let it affect or disaffect you as you want.

To me.. Goth is a state of mind where I dwell.. wether it conforms to society's set standards of norms or not. It is the embracement of those darker things and thoughts within me (that all people possess) that otherwise would lay about and fester.. growing and rising until they exploded with no other outlet.

It is a group/society of us that share the belief of acceptance of people for who and what they are at their barest without judgment or ridicule.

It has always been more, then just music and clothes. Which I personaly believe has been lost to todays goth. (I was goth back when we were called "Bat Ratters"... yes.. im old.. over 35)

Actually i have seen people wear things like that, but i do not think that is really goth, i think that is more suited for someone who wants people to look at them because they need attention, and personally i do not think their is anything wrong with people wearing that, i just do not think that is goth, i personally have my own definition of goth, just like everyone else does, im just giving my opinion...

Goth to me, personally, is just a label givento people that wear dark clothing and listen to music that is't mainstream.

As far as acceptance, if you care so much about acceptance you wouldn't wear what others would call goth because it automaticly causes people to have certain opinions of you, so if there not close to you and don't understand you they're not oing to like it.

What way of life?

Goth, to me is simply what, and who I am. I can't quite explain it. By getting into the subculture I discovered a new part of myself, good things and bad things, and have learned how to work through them. It's taught me how I am and is a comforting way of life for me.
Music? Yeah, I listen to "goth" music but I also listen to a lot of other stuff. I like chain pants, black clothes, fishnet tops, etc but I'll wear other colors and styles if the need occurs. Being gothic isn't dependant on how you dress.
My friends and family are used to it, because I've been this way for three years. They don't quite understand what it means to me, but they don't bother me about it. They don't quite understand it. Some of my friends understand and are way supportive or the same way themselves. I've never gotten negative comments from anyone close to me, or I haven't in a long time.

Am I Goth

I like black. Black shirts, Dark Jeans... leather, fishnet tops... but I'll wear other colours... white tops, red tops... blue jeans.

I like 'goth' music, but not just goth music.

Goth isn't defined by what you are into, or what you wear, but by who you are. You can have interests that are Gothic in nature but not necessarily be a Goth.

That's true, some people simply don't like labels. Hell, I don't like labels most of the time. Most of them I'm uncomfortable with, but some I'm more laid back with. Sometimes, you just have to sit back and say "Yes, I'm a ____"(fill in the blank)...Some people just don't accept anything else.

There are many ways to define gothic. In my opinion, it's a lifestyle. And this varies between individuals. There is definately a pattern within the culture. Whether it be expressed through your tastes in music (having a variety of genres I listen to), literature, art, fashion, even down to food and drink. It's a very open style, extending from the oh so black, elegant victorians, pierced and tattoed, pvc/leather, ravers, cyber goths with their "back from the future" look, to the classic trenchies. Rough/Grunge to the Glamorous/Devine.

I have been through a couple of these styles and I love the freedom I have within the goth culture.

As for family members, well they're family. They just have to deal with it. If they love you, they'll love you for who you are and look past the "morbid exterior". My grandmother doesn't understand and I don't expect her to. She is from a very conservative christian generation.
