I am often quite Empathic in that I understand how people are feeling inside even if thy themselves are fighting it... and sometimes I cant see the obvious...

Is this an uncontrolled Empathic ability? or merely an understanding based on personal experiences that's lost when there's nothing to relate it to?

If it's empathic how can I control it?

It may be both, depends on your experiance in detailing facial expressions vs the emotions shared from the person vs the empathy involved. You could be merely trying to hard subconciously and not aware of what you are actually experiancing. If it is out of control, then you may need to put yourself in check once in a while. I usually study a person for a bit while they are talking and draw my conclusion from that point. Usually the empathic awareness is dead on with what I was thinking about the individuals expressions and mannerisms.

I'm Empathic to a mild degree, very mild, but I know someone who is an Empath, and it gets hard for her to control it, because she feels whatever people close to her feel...
In long term, I'm sure you see that the results of this can be quite devastating, if you can't harness control and it gets crazy, you'll eventually not want to be around people.
I don't know how to control it, I don't need to, but my advice is to find someone who can help you understand the power, and once you understand, learn to control.

Such as on VR, that is very understandable.

As for the comment of feeling and just wanting to get away from people, I understand this too, whihc is why I take it upon myself to measure emotions as well as the empathy. I know I am tired of people when my mood becomes bi-polar.

Hmm, that happens to me too, mainly on VR.

I wonder if computers and technology could actually interfere with that kind of stuff? It would be interesting to research that further.

Energy does not care where you are from, as it is cosmic. Good example would be a phone call from Japan to let us say New York, in a brief second. The speed of light theory, or sound. Same instance. Outlets such as computers, would not interfere, but instead make the magnetic pull of the energy waves stronger.

I suppose with computers and whatnot you arent getting the person's whole vibe, you're getting a more focussed thought stream

I myself am an empath and I find that if somewhere inside of yourself you don't pay complete attention to anyone who are your friends, strangers etc. you can block it out. Also I have found that just telling yourself "no" can work as well. Meditating on it to find an answer is another way...

I've also noticed that if you and other people have empathic abilities and don't even know it or even if you do, you can form links on accident. If you're both strong empaths picking up on it happens quicker than with two weak empaths. I pick up on people's emotions no matter where I go..

I dont think Empathy is just an ability... I think it has to do with depth of perception based on something inside opening up. Perhaps with practice an empathic person might be able to read surface thoughts or see future events specifically related to an individual

I can feel people be it online on the phone or in person though in person is the quickest and most reveiling......I know my ability has caused me to lose alot of friends when I just tell them things I see or I feel from them. Think of Empathy as a muscle. It usually works involuntarily, but if you work on taking control of it, you can build it up to be stronger and to work according to your will, not the other way around.

It would be a bit of both yes.. depending on who you're feeling the empathy towards or from.. whichever is the appropriate way to put it.
If you know someone very well or are close to them.. or they are relating to you verbally a situation they are currently going through.. you empathize with them based on your own personal experiences with the same situation.
But strangers or people you dont know all that well, and you know nothing or little about what their circumstances are, yet you feel their emotions even if they are trying to hide them.. that to me is empathy...

You are empathic if you not only understand how they feel, but feel the same way. It comes in waves. I'm slightly empathic and to me it feels almost like my own emotions. Except it comes to me in waves, if I concentrate. Like a blow of energy.
To control it you need to build a mental wall. This takes concentration and is harder when touching others. A few crystals and stones help your energy level and helps to block. There are also different kinds of spells and gris gris bags that help, because of the energy and material you put into it.

empathy cannot be turn off or on at will, unless you have master your heart to the point of controling your own feelings, and even then, you will feel the flow of emoitons of others hitting you, the only thing possible is to ignore or not feel affected, like seing a child crying out of pain and being unabel to act, you block so you wont crash down inside.

You can learn to block your reaction to it, bue your cant block the flow of it coming to you.

I have read an article about empathy and the author believed that the real empathy does not exist, because we just interpret how the other people(and not just people) reacts.
We could be tricked by a bulldog that just appears to be funny and upset and in reality it`s furious (and if you approach he will not be glad and attack you).
I would call this just false empathy because we really could be tricked by that.

But the real empathy exists and I felt it more then once.I am an actor and when I play sometimes feel like an enormous breath who comes from the spectators, responding to my breath. The sensation is extraordinary pleasant and very powerful.
First I thought I am just paranoid but I questioned many colleagues actors(with a larger experience) and almost everyone assured me that they felt the same many times. They described the sensation in similar terms.
From the scene the spectator are invisible and there was no sounds during the experience.
Sometimes you just "feel" if you "catched" the auditory or not. It`s a sort of magnetism that doesn`t work without an audience. If there are more spectators the sensation is more clear and powerful.
This communion that is established bears a name in the romanian actors world that can be translate as "you crossed the footlights(barrier)".
I am learning to use this energy in the magick field.

I've been an empath for a long time now and I still haven't learned to control it fully. It has gotten a lot stronger. I get headaches and go through anti-social moods because of it. At one point I was on all sorts of medication hoping to turn it off and that didn't work. I never learned how to shield against it because I never knew anyone that had it or could help me learn. I discovered on my own that if I just learn to let it pass through me, rather than letting it stop and control me, I can live without the headaches. It's still there like a hum in the background but I have been able to focus and pick up feelings that I want to listen to so I can help who I can.

Maybe this method can help you out a bit more for the type of empathy you have or not. It's helped me so far.

Empathy is a hard one for me. Human beings do communicate a bit on different levels that we are not directly conscious of. Pheremones are a huge part of this.

My problem is that I have Aspergers Syndrome. So dealing with people on an empathatic level is very very difficult for me.

*clears throat* Weeellll... I wouldn't go so far as to give myself the label of empathic, some have called me that in the past... yadda yadda... I just chalk it up to me being me, people can call it whatever. *laughs* Even purple monkey dishwasher, if they truly chose to :) but I'll share what seems to aid me in calming it all down and not wanting to gouge out my eyes trying to tell what's me and what's Joe shmoe eating a hamburger in the corner! hehe :)

Firstly! Do not tire yourself out.
If you are tired or under alot of stress about things or matters that only affect you and you're getting warn thin. My advice... cut it out and learn to let go of the "little things." *laughs* yes yes I know easier said than done since so many "little things" equal one "big" thing you have to fret and worry over. *le sigh* I guess the point I'm trying to make here is that if you do not keep your outer body from wanting to crash and burn in a ball of flames from stress or what have you, then your inner natural defences will be weakened or practically non existent when you go to call on them. In a state of already emotional stress, caused solely by you, it is common sense to assume that due to already being sensitive naturally, then also sensitive empathically that emotions of others will catch you off guard quicker and will be harder to overcome when they attempt to overwhelm your already warn thin senses.

( hehe I should be careful about the words common sense *laughs* What's common sense for one, is not for another hehe :D *runs*)

Secondly. Do Not Panic.
Oh goodness I cannot stress this enough. Do not get locked in the "WTF" moment by freaking out when you get overwhelmed or caught off guard. (Lets face it. Even if you're this massive guru, there's always going to be moments you will be caught off guard or overwhelmed, may as well get use to it. *laughs* :) ))
Trust that even without training in shielding and what not that it is naturally within you to regain control of your own inner self if you get caught off guard or overwhelmed. Shielding and learning how to block or repel input is simply the conscious effort of an already natural subconscious phenomenon of your inner self. If you believe you are able to control and are in control even in circumstances where it is not readily apparent, you will revert back to a calmer state, or a state that is solely your own much quicker than if you let it over run you by believe you have no recourse but be a victim of the light at the end of the tunnel being a train.

"It is within the powers of your mind to affect change within that mind."- Friend of mine once said. :) Woot! Mind over matter! er... In this case Mind over mind. hehe :)

Thirdly: You are not a freak, abnormal, or should be locked up!
( Don't make me get out the rubber mallet and start playing whack-an-empy. :) )
Whether your awareness of the world around you comes from simply being observant, intuitive and able to correspond actions to emotions or you are indeed more sensitive beyond that, even with complete and utter strangers; your awareness no matter how it is derived is natural. You are not a freak of nature; your extra sensitivity if you have it is simply a slightly higher step of another natural occurrence, that of being overtly observant to naturally occurring social cues.
I have found that believing oneself to be a “freak” or “abnormal” in the negative (for I know people who delight in those titles being given to them *laughs* :) ) connotations of the words interrupts the inner self’s ability to cope with the sensations it is taking in and the individuals ability to interpret/understand; thusly believing that Empathy is simply another natural phenomenon or at the very least is a natural occurrence to those with the ability, is in fact beneficial to progressing with the ability and/or gaining more control of the sensory input.

Fourthly: Deal with you, before another for gaining control of yourself, you will aid them more.
I know that sounds perhaps cruel to say, but if you are indeed sensitive, then you will give out just as much if not more so than you take in and if you are tripping out on a friend’s turmoil of emotions, you will be aiding more to their turmoil than helping them “get over it.” Vicious cycle. They affect you, you affect them and because you affect them they are even more in a state of emotional upheaval and you get a headache. *Shakes head* Vicious cycle *laughs* to put it bluntly. :)
In this sort of situation take a moment, take a deep breath and try and differentiate between what are distinctly your emotional reactions and what are theirs. Once you realize that your emotional state may and will affect them, attempt to focus keeping your emotions in check before attempting to sort through the sensations you are gaining from them.
If their emotional state is simply too much for you to handle and you get a sensory overload, attempt to get them to calm down at least outwardly to lessen some of the “blaring.”

One technique that has helped and I do, do this and ask others to if I know it is from them that the “overload” is coming from. It is simply a breathing exercise requiring little than somewhere to sit and a few moments of time.

Step 1: Sit down.
Step 2: Put your hands in front of you on your lap, your feet fully on the floor.
Step 3: Interlock the fingers of your hands together, thumbs side by side. (For myself if I feel especially overwhelmed, I also cross my arms over my chest before interlocking my fingers.)
Step 4: Cross your feet at the heels while attempting to keep the soles of your feet on the ground.
Step 5 (optional): Close your eyes.
Step 6: Focus on the sound of your breathing, the feel of your heart in your chest. The ground below your feet, the feel and smell of the air. The sound of sounds (and sights of the sights, if your eyes are still open,) of all that is around you.
Step 7: Breathe in past what you believe your lungs can carry
Step 8: Hold that extended breath for at least to the count of six
Step 9: Slowly release that breath and attempt to breathe out past what you believe your lungs had of air.
Step 10: Repeat steps 7-9 as needed to rein in oneself and sort through the sensations.

I find this aids in re-centering my inner self so I can better handle whatever just jumped past my guards and shields :) and “calms” the other person down enough for things to not be “blaring” while attempting to help them.

Fifthly: What you are experiencing may not be them, but you. (Ties into number 4 and 1)
Your emotional state will directly impact how you are able to interpret the sensations coming at you, your ability to act on them and your ability if necessary to block them. If you do not pay attention to your own emotional/mental well being and keep it nice and healthy like the little puppy you just brought home it will come around later on as a big ugly mutt to bite you in the tushy. You cannot attempt to conquer your Empathy if you are attempting to battle such things as depression etc. *shakes head* yes yes I understand probably far more than ya’ll would think I could know that attempting to conquer your Empathy may be one of the reasons your depressed etc… but Do please note my use of the words ONE OF. *sigh* Just cause you’re Empathic does not mean that you can be escapist and believe everything that you are going through/experiencing etc is simply the by product of being sensitive. None of this, the world is *clears throat* so that’s why I feel like *clears throat.**clears throat again* Can we say cop out?
By believing that everything you are experiencing is entirely external, externally motivated due to something internal, instead of realizing it is a mixture of both with some of it being entirely under your control, I can say this with a degree of certainty true balance will not be achieved and you will be constantly battling yourself.
Know thyself fully, take time to know who you are, and come to an understanding or at least a compromise with the three aspects of “me myself and I” so that they don’t kill each other or end up driving the fourth aspect, (the one looking upon the three and shaking their head or nodding,) crazy trying to sort everything out.

Sixthly: Acceptance.
The words “deal with it” are to easily said and to easily thrown about. It will take time to get use to and accustomed to, but and I will say this, never have I come across someone truly accepting of this natural ability because of the chaotic nature of emotions and the sensations being ever changing. There will always be a time, or times where one will be overwhelmed no matter how many shields, guards or years with Empathic abilities; if one cannot accept the reality of their sensitivity then they should at the vary least accept the universal failings of it.
I also believe that until it is more accepted to be sensitive (Empathic) and this sensitivity is more and more common in society, will one have a true sense of ease and acceptance with and of their Empathy.
I would argue probably despite what I have said earlier, that true mastering of one’s inner self in regards to Empathy hinges on the level of acceptance/denial of one’s sensitivity.

Ok. I think I’ve babbled enough on my point of view on it all. *laughs* Please do remember this is only my opinion and *laughs, smiling* I do realize I can be completely out to lunch, but! While I’m out, anyone want a sandwich? :D hehe

Toodles!
Take care and be well hehe :D

I have been an empath since I was very young. At one point I completely shut down emotionally because it was easier than dealing with all the incoming sensations. It took me several years to realize what I'd done and another couple of years to get it opened up. But then I didn't know how I'd shut it down, so I ended up having to work on learning to shut it down at will. It took me about 12 years total to get where I could control it.

My biggest challenges now are when I'm in a room with a strong projective empath, because I tend to receive emotions strongly and project weakly, and so when they pick up on my projection of their emotions, it creates a feedback loop that escalates feelings, especially tense or angry situations. The trick is in shutting down my projections.

As far as empathy with someone online, I have had that happen since 1993... but I also seem to have some affinity for electricity, and computers, especially on a wired LAN, are all about the electric charges. I'm not surprised that I can replace physical cuddling with my boyfriend (long distance relationship, heh) by talking to him in IMs and focusing on our connection. Another thing I've been known to do is sense just from a couple of words (like an answer to "how you doing?" of "pretty good") that someone is trying to hide their feelings though they need to talk... It's just one of those things that happens that I take as normal for me--whether others consider it normal for the general population or not....

I feel that I am a very empathetic person and I believe it's because of my ability to think outside of myself. I'm able to open myself up and really feel what someone else does. I'm not so wrapped up in myself that I can't relate to what others are feeling. Is this a special ability? No. I think it's just part of my personality.

I'd say part of it is just being able to relate to other people from having similar experiences. Part of it could be an ability to read peoples tone, or facial expressions, body language and pick up on their emotions that way.

I feel empathy is both natural and can be learned. I have always had a natural reaction to absorbing energy, one that I have had to "learn" to control and develop. I also have a friend here who "fed" me through the PC. I could feel him with me and even got to see visions from his life. It can be very exciting.

I've heard about the shielding techniques. But it's hard to get the empathic gurus to actually talk about them. Would be nice to know.

Ain't a guru by far, but if you want to try and block things more. Here's another little trick but for me its kinda hard to explain so bear with me as I try and fuddle out how to put it on paper...er... text based forum.

1)Focus on your innerself. Eyes closed, breathing slowly in and out. ( See my post above on this thread for a "breathing" tech)

2) Once you feel that you are focused, begin imagine something coming to your protection. Start visualizing that there is a bubble around you/your mind, a shield, or something else that comes to your mind as you close your eyes.

3)Give that object texture, colour, think of what that protective object in your mind feels like, tastes like, smells like. Involve all your senses in this visualization.

4) Now what happens when you touch the object. Does it expand to encompass you?... Does it rebound your hand/mind etc away like a knight's shield would?...Does it grow spikey and rapidly shift colours? Give this protective object in your mind a reaction

5) Focus your mind to try and attune this protective object in your mind to whatever you are trying to protect yourself mentally from.

6) Once you feel that you've "told" it what to protect you from enough. Embrace it. Attempt to bring it back/or into yourself. Make this "visualization" part of you.

7) When in need, close your eyes,or otherwise focus, upon your protective inner object.

8) If you feel like its not doing its job, focus again and rebuild it. However when you go to attune it, make sure you are specific about what you want it to protect, elsewise it will be well... essentually pummeled by things it shouldn't be concerned with when you are to "general" in what you want it to do.

( I am of the belief that everyone has inner mental shields, against attacks, against emotions, what have you...but it is working these inner boundaries, manipulating them until they are a concious effort that they will progress in intensity of protection)

Now again its kinda hard for me to explain but let me attempt to fuddle.

If you want to try and close yourself off so that you don't affect others as much or... so you don't have random smucks "picking up" that you're sensitive and attempting to play with you here's another little thing to I guess sort of "dampen" the "signal" so to speak of you being sensitive/empathic.

1)Focus on your innerself. Eyes closed, breathing slowly in and out. ( See my post somewhere above on this thread for a "breathing" tech)

2) Once you feel that you are focused, begin to imagine (in this case) a box ( or something else meant to "contain" something) within you. Unlike the "shields" where this object is outside and brought into the self, this box is "made" inside the self and stays inside. Attempt to "create" or "envison" this box somewhere near the temples of your body

3)Give that object texture, colour, think of what that protective object in your mind feels like, tastes like, smells like. Involve all your senses in this visualization.

4) Now attempt to focus and pour whatever elements you're trying to block yourself from giving off, into this box.

5) close the box

6) Now, attempt to hold this box in the back of your mind somewhere. Do not forget about this box, keep it in the background of your mind, not the foreground as you move on.

7) With the box in the background of your mind begin to focus upon what will bind it. Will it be string? Silk? metal chains... what have you but focus on some sort of device that will lock or maintain the closure of this box. Do not bring the silk ribbon to the box yet.

8) while keeping the box in the back of your mind, focus upon this binding apparatus. Give it texture, colour ect, attempt to give it more qualities of the senses than the box itself when you "created" it.

9) Move the ribbon to the back of your mind and bring the box to the foreground.

10)Attempt to move the box down slightly on your body somewhere near your mouth
and throat.

11) Bind the box with the ribbon, slowly, envision every wrapping of the ribbon. or every step of the device you attach to your container, as you close it.

12) Once you feel this box is secured, attempt to do this simultaniously (at the same time:

a)swallow slowly and envision the container flowing down naturally as if it were food.

b) Focus the box downwards and "create" a "holding cell" (for lack of a better term) approximately below your chest (ribs) but above your stomach (belly button)

*Shrugs* as I said its kinda hard to explain but I hope I kinda got it across. *shrugs*

hehe :)
Take care and be well
Toodles! :)
Ara.

took me a very long time to control mine and it did drive me nuts. but after a while it begins to ease a little and long enough for one to gain controll of it . :)

Empathy is both a curse and a blessing. When you can help people and seen the results of your help its rewarding. When you get the brunt of someones pain or anger, its just awful. The trick is learning protection for yourself. There are many ways to guard yourself, ways that people can suggest but only you can figure out for yourself.

It will take time to learn to control your empathy. Sometimes learning to build a wall brick by brick in your head helps to block out the unwanted emotion that you are picking up from people. This is how i block out people that emotion is to strong for me to handle.

I think it is an understanding of other people's emotions due to things you have felt or been through. Often in real life and online I know what other people are feeling and they dont have to tell me for me to know. For the most part I think it is because I have felt the emotions myself or been through things like what they're going through and I recognize and understand it.

Having worked in the Medical field for so long i have a hard time with Empathy Verses Sympathy.. I tend to lean more towards sympathy and my heart ends up bleeding for the other individual and i suppose it makes me a better nurse but the Field needs for those in it to be more empathetic so You can be in any situation needed .. i myself cant do that... if i see a child in pain or hurt or dying i greive for that lilone and it kills me inside along with the very fact to have to have a child pass on and see the parents dying inside having just lost their child i cry right along with them...So does not being empathetic make me a bad nurse? NO i think it makes me better as my attention to detail and care is stronger and more personal and loving compared to a non emotional person giving care to someone in need just to get a job done

I believe attempting to control empathy is the easiest way to lose it. Once you begin trying to control it, whether to enhance it or to block it, it becomes more about you than the other person. So, deal with it, appreciate it if you have it, try to develop it if you desire it, but don't try to control it.

I am an empath as well & it is hard to control over all but I find that if I go emotionless that it doesn't effect me that much. Considering that I have ADD & more also helps because it makes me random a lot. Also try converting it into data instead of allowing it to become emotions within yourself, I find it easier to deal with data rather than attempt emotions.

I am a very strong empath.

I actually never really knew what it was until i found a certain site. And they taught me how to put a shield up, so I will not always pick up others feelings. It's quite easy to put up a shield.

Just remember to have a glass of water on hand. ;)
