I belive it is an always changing thing dealing with karma. You do good things your life will change for the better, you do bad.... your life path will change acccordingly. It's a matter of free will.

Believing in fate/destiny would make life seem somewhat pointless if your path in life was already set for you, and ultimately would mean that we have no freewill since that will is controlled by a supreme being.

I am not sure on how I feel about fate and a predetermined path in this life, take away the randomness and what does that leave.

Interestingly enough what came to mind was a maze with me making choices as I go along. However, my Higher Power putting in road blocks or making it difficult on some paths and seeing which I chose.

If it is a difficult path but the scenery is beautiful, I might chose that one. If it is an easy path and the view is terrible, I still might chose that one, but somewhere, my Higher Power will throw in another choice. What will I chose THIS time???

So I see it as a combination, a higher plan with some of my choices making the journey individually mine.

A wonderful question, and one I am so fond of. I am a fatalist, myself.

The question can always become, "If my choices are my own, than perhaps the choices I'm making are already pre-determined. So what if I choose a path contrary to my original intent? Is that too pre-determined?"

One can never know, but I think that given the revolution of the stars, planets, elements, ages, and atoms, we can reasonably predict future events with confidence. There are so many details to consider when trying to acurately predict something. Understanding their harmony, I think, is the key.

Other than that, our ultimate fate is death.

i think from the moment we are able to think for our self or we understand that we have free will. our paths are laid out in front of us. and not for some higher power to chose but us. we chose what path we take. weather it be that of darkness or that of the light.

for me i made that choice a long time ago. i chose the darkness over the enlighten. for i saw that the darkest path in life would teach me the most. so in a way i think that all of our life we are forced to make choices on our fate. made to roll the dice and see where she lands.

the choice is always ours to make.....

Wolfsbohne says our ultimate fate is death. Can't argue with that one, and yet I'm not a fatalist.

In my experience, both serendipity and premeditation have played a role to get me to this point where I sit with laptop and write this observation. Without the luck . . . I might be my sister (see journal) --- on the lamb.

I prefer a plan of my own devise, but playing the opportunist has also worked.

Physics can explain the revolution of the stars, planets, elements, ages, and atoms, but with human behavior a congruence of internal and external factors can produce truly marvelous results, some guessable in advance and others completely novel.

This is the basis upon which humanity has built civilizations and destroyed them. In retrospect, we might learn some predictors, and thereby argue fate, but I don't think evolution is at a standstill.

Our reach exceeding our grasp is the variable that defies fate.

This thread I remember from a few months back, if I remember my post right, it went like this...

Ah fate, that preordained none religious pondering of the distortion of ones own plan. There is a very big differance between fate and free will.

Every individual has a predestinted fate, in my belief system. Even though they still have free will in their lives, the paths they take are like a choose your own adventure book, many endings and yet each ending is the beginning of a new story. But there is also one ultimate ending.

Fate would be this ultimate ending we so choose to believe in. The ending we most desire.

I could ramble on for hours on this subject, but I will spare the intimate details of my beliefs.

Keep in mind that life ALWAYS leaves us with a set of choices. I;mnot saying they're alwys the most desirable ones but they are still otions. It's kinda like we're being given the opportunity to learn our way through our lives. Each feat we accomplish is what we look upon as fate -- again, it's these conscious choices we make.
I guess that is my belief in life overall -- kinda like we are all reincanatied until we learn how to navigate our way through our fate(s) and then we move on to our next level of consciousness. *shrug* Just my thought lol

I love, love, love the concept of fate as a mathematical equation. Of course, I don't have that equation; nobody does.

But check it;

Say the big bang theory is correct.

That means that at some point, there was nothing. And suddenly, there was something. A big, explodey something.

Each particle created at that point was sent hurling into nothingness, creating somethingness, with each its own trajectory and rate of speed. They'll bounce off eachother and create stars and planets and supernovae and etc and etc, seemingly at random...but its not at random.

Sentient hand of God or no, everything was decided at that exact moment of explosion, and everything can mathematically be traced back to that moment.

*grabs tea*

Mmmm, tea.

Okay.

So apply that to the creation of life. In that moment of explosion, the formula was there to send out the particles and elements necessary to eventually create our earth and the life-giving elements needed to support the evolution of all the species.

Right? Good. Now for the hard part; free fucking will.

Does it exist? Or are we simply responding to our inner formula, which is composed of;

1. Our culture we grew up in.
A. Which was made by a social evolutionary process that resulted primarily in response to natural influences (hunter/gatherer societies)

2. The family that raised us.
A. Which will raise children in response to what has influenced them.

3. Hormones and chemicals.
A. Which are formed naturally from evolutionary processess.
B. Which influence us a lot more than some are willing to admit. (For instance, I will be a lot more prone to anger and hatred during my menstrual cycle, but during the anger and hatred, I will think I more have concrete reasons to feel as I do.)

Now, apply our social structure to that of the big bang; all of us responding to outside influences, bouncing off of eachother, affecting eachother, affecting the future. It seems like chaos.

Doesn't it? XD

Gosh, I love this stuff.

I love this topic...

There is no way to know for sure, but there is a chance that your fate is determined by rolls of the dice the determine each leg of your life.

Basically you come to a major decision in your life, "Do I go to college or do I just get a job"

I choose college

(rolls the dice..)

Ahhh...if you chose a job, you would have decided to pay $2 into a company lottery pool and would have won a $10 million share of a jackpot.

I am a lil taken back 50/50 by this subject. I do believe in some sorts of fate. Like love, soul groups, and well things that happen. However, I do believe we make our own destiny by choices we decide upon. With every decision there is something that throws things off, or on balance in our lives.

I see myself as an idealist.

The way I see it, life can be full of choices. But those choices could ultimately lead you to your fate. I think there are many roads to life that can be taken and choice is what takes you there. Along those roads there are many things you can learn from and experience and that's what I believe is fate. The things you've been through makes you who you are today. That is also what fate is, to me.

Of course, the ultimate fate is Death. In the end, Death is truly inevitable no matter who you may be. If anything, that would be the single Fate that everyone is destined to.

I guess I'm 50/50 then. I think fate and choice comes hand-in-hand. Or maybe I'm too open minded? I hope I made sense...

Circumstance plays a part. However, choice also plays one heck of a part of how we turn out. If you are born into a highly musical family, chances are you will have natural talent plus the chance to hear and play music at an early age. IF you take that chance, you will possibly grow up to be a musician. If you refuse to have anything to do with music , all the natural raw talent in the world will not make you a musician. Fate gave you the genetic material and the musical family. You make the choice to participate or not.

The philosopher Jean Paul Sarte spoke of choices. If you informed him that you wanted to be a great writer, he would ask you did you write and hone your craft. If you told him no, he would respond that no you did not want to be a great writer. He would inform you that you would have written something and kept on writing until you were considered one of the masters of the literary world. He would have put the choice in your hands.

BF Skinner, another philosopher and psychologist, would say fate played the biggest part. If a young man robbed a liquor store in a bad part of town and killed the store owner in the process , Skinner would say any of us in the same place at the same time in the same set of circumstances would have done the same thing. We would have had no choice to him.

Carl Rogers, another philosopher, would say that both circumstances and choice play a part. If you are born into a family that is overweight and food is the major part of its existence, then you may be overweight. It would depend on both your genetics and your choices concerning food to Carl Rogers.

i thank all of you so much , you guys enlighted me big on this , cause i am kinda drawn in a confused line.

to me i kinda always believed a bit in fate like.

there is a road we start on , that meets with multiple paths that are met by more that sometimes meet back up or spread even further out . which like was said earlier in the end is met with death . so many things can happen to change our choices yet in the end we still end in the same place.

i guess i feel in a way wouldn't it still be fate. i know other said similar or kinda twin things to what i said but i thank you guys for you thoughts and it helps me big time and hope to hear more .

thanks again. sorry if i rambled or confused a bit , i do that...lol

I agree with most of the other posts that I have read in this thread. I believe that our destinies are what we make them. Our futures change every moment based on our actions and not based on fate or predestination. Being human we have certain emotions and feelings. There are things that we like and things that we want in life. When we get some of those or we achieve or receive things that make us happy we like to think that it might have been fate or even luck. I say just coincidence. The universe does not know fate or luck.

i don't think either is exactly true.. i think that we are living into the future, i.e. the clock runs backwards.. so the future is what is possible while the past is static... thus WE determine the entirety of future, while the past might look like something else, namely destiny, chance, divine will, etc...

Choices we make everyday change depending on previous choices made. I do not believe anyone or anything can know exactly how we will decide from day to day. Someone could GUESS but never know for sure.

Fate is something that people look back at saying it was fate they did this and they did it because that was their fate.

To have this mindset, no matter what we do it is what we were supposed to do......

Is it that simple?

i dont eithor but to the understanding the i can agree with is some people use this word fate like the word time..

example, it was his time to go or it was his fate but really its just a persons guessing game cause the person saying doesnt really no if it was his time to go..who would no but the person who died..

I believe fate is a word that people use to give a form of closure in their own minds. That it was ment to be that way because of fate and therefore it is right in that way at least....

I do not think our station in life determines the choices we make as one poster in this thread put it. That is giving our free will to society at large and is not a good idea. That would be saying that a person who is born into a poor uneducated family could not get an education, because others in society see them as unintelligent or non-motivated. We see the opposite of that everyday, when we hear about someone who is the first person in their family to attend college.

Some will say fate, because they are lazy or do not want to be accountable for their own actions. I think blaming society's opinion of us or our station in life is the same thing.

I think fate is only partially responsible for what happens during the course of our lives. Some things are inevitable. We also proceed blindly at some times also Either way, I believe that we are mostly responsible for our own"fate."

I kinda like to think of it like a tree. the root is set, so is the bark, we have choices in life trhats where we branch off, somtimes the brachs cross (the things that are planed already) but the fact is this tree joins at the top, we meet the same people just have different choices, just my opinion.

I would love to say that I believe we all have a fate, or a destiny already mapped out for us...because that would mean that all the negative things that happen in our lives really DO happen for a reason, and will eventually lead to a positive outcome. Unfortunately, I've seen too many negative things with no positive endings to believe that. I think it's all about what choices we make, and what kind of lives WE choose to live.

I absolutely loved reading through the responses on this subject...It's one of those topics that always manages to be thought provoking, no matter how many times it's brought up for discussion....

Personally, I subscribe to a belief that's partially rooted in chance and partially rooted in the belief of a pre determined fate. I believe as we grow and develop in life, mentally and spiritually, we come to ascertain certain predilections, certain traits and habits that make it easier for ourselves, or others for that matter, to divine what our future descisions might yield for us.
On the other hand, spontaneity is a constant factor that is always evident in our day to day lives that allows us to stray from our normal modes of thought and pursue another path or choice completely out of the norm of our usual patterns of thought or action.

As far as astrology or other methods of divination I don't know too very much about the factors involved so I think it may be a matter of coincidence or even some form of synchronicity when it comes to how they predict fates... Perhaps when a person is made aware of such predictions what follows is a kind of self fulfilling prophecy, where they believe in the outcome so much, be it conciously or subconciously, they allow the prediction to become true.

Perhaps in the end, Fate is not so extraneous or subject to forces outside our control but goverened completely and totally by us instead...

Or that could just be my insufferable idealism talking. *winks*

madbeau - I would say yes, it was Hitler's and the world's fate that he slaughtered thousands of humans. No one ever said that life had to be fair, just, or even nice - but we may learn from these situations and try to move on. Some may say then that by learning from these situations we are exercising our free will, but who is to say that learning is not also the result and process of fate itself?

I must agree with Wolfsbohne.

Fate gives us lessons to learn. Some of us are just slow learners.
I believe that Fate and Destiny do entertwine. However I feel that we all play some part in our Destiny and Fate is the Big picture.

Fate guides us to our destiny. For instance I was destined to be apart of a certain persons life and fate brought us together time and time again.

Fate is an entity, a deific threefold being that weaves the threads of each individual's life into the Tapestry of Life. Each individual chooses his own destiny, works towards it, and achieves what he will become. There a a very few of us who are fated to a point to trod a particular road, until we come to the decision which we must make that will forever govern our destiny. Very often we do not recognize this place in our lives until it is too late. Then there are the even fewer of us who have given our life's path to the direction of Fate, to place us where we need to be when we need to be there. This is a very personal decision not easily backed out of. And this was and is my decision. But to the average person, the truth is this: for the most part, your destiny lies in your hands. There is an ultimate purpose for you, but it is up to you to discover and accomplish it. Fate may intervene here and there, but Fate will not rule your life, unless you ask her. But be wary, as you may not like where that path leads, and Fate is indeed a harsh mistress. Do not dare to question her.

I actually don't believe in fate.
I just think that people do what they do
and then they're done.
Personally, I don't believe in a higher anything.
I question too much to actually believe in anything.
Who writes your decisions?
What about another chain of events?
What if you change your mind at the last minute?
But, if it was fate, was it your fate to change your mind?
Too many factors, I think.

madbeau - there is a common misconception that fate is a path set forth by a seperate entity - a deity concieved of as another creature set on high to judge every action. But if you understand the concept of a light cone as it applies to linear time, you would see that all of the events throughout the history of the world before Hitler which lead up to his control of Germany were necessary precursors in his ascent to power. Naturally progressing from there, have been all events up to now as a result.

If that is the case, then one could potentially, mathematically, and acurately predict the future, though it is highly improbable due to the extreme detail to which one would have to apply themself.

Personally I think there is a guide line set out for us but that they are just that. People who don't really want to do anything I think fall back on the excuse of fate but that is there for us to work with and change to fit the way things are going for us and to make things better for ourselves.
