This is a question that has been bothering me for a very long time now... are dragons just myth and fantasy or did they actually exist... or something at least similar to it?

When you do research on it the thing that really starts to make me wonder is when you find historical records... pictures in caves ect... at a time when people where very closed off from all other cultures... They are in record in africa and china and europe at a time when trade was not very common and there was not much reason to go elsewhere.

So do you think they ever existed or that it's all just in everybodies head?

I think they existed. Moth myths have at least some truth to them. they might not be like the dragons you see in the movies, but I'm sure there was something similar in real life.

Find it unlikly there was the fire breathing or any other thing emiited by dragons but I'm sure there were prolly some VERY large reptiles... Most of the "myths" have some form of "truth" to them...

yeah I know.. I am curious about where exactly it came from... Cuz as far as i know the closest thing it resembles is a dinosaur.... and they died out long before humans were on this earth... (as far I know... thats what science says.) But no matter how much I think I can't figure out what animal they would see that would make them draw pictures of something like that... anybody have any ideas?

If you look at some lizards now and some of the dinosuar skeletons there quite possibly could have been . If you think about it untill a written language was developed cultures passed down things by word of mouth . In doing so exagerations happen and this could have lead to the begining of the dragon myth we all know and love now

There was a show on TLC or one of those channels once on dragons. I don't know if they ever existed. I do know that almost every culture dating realy far back has the dragon myth. In most culture's history, dragons are spoke of. I think it's possible. I don't knw if I believe they breathed fire, but I believe a creature much like a dragon could have existed. I mean we haven't found al the fossils out there that there are to find. Maybe one day they will find dragon bones, who knows?

ooo thats a good answer...

I always knew that they did the drawings and that they handed things down by just telling others about it, but I didn't know that while they did that a lot of exagerations happened... I knew that over time they changed a bit, but really I don't know how much it changed...

I have always believed dragons are real.. but not like say an alligator is real. I ahve always put them with like the fae... we used to be able to see and interact with them far more than we do now as well. I believe dragons are much the same and hopefully in time we will learn to reconnect with them.

As it was mention, I dont think it was the fire breathign type but indeed large reptilian creature, lezard maybe, I mean look at the comodo dragon, it has some characteristics that we attribut to dragons, mythological ones and real ones, so I would assume they sort of exist.

If they did not exist, dinosaur bones would not be found, as they were the dragons of their time.

If you are talking about midevil time dragons, it is the same concept. large lizards, more then likely sharks and alligators being misrepresented and exaggerated into fire breathing creatures.

i have posted on a similar topic. yes dragons do exsist...but not in our physical relm of reality, if you want to see them you need to learn astral projection....dragons do have the ability to cross over to our plain of exsistance much like we can cross to theirs. you can see them out the corner of your eye when you are least expecting it...or if you have "the sight" then you can see their etheral bodies floating around the people they are protecting /stalking/ watching.....but visualization is the key to all things magical...remember that..if your mind is closed youwill neever see them...

Since you brought that up Specter, they live in the Golden age, a dimension that co-exists beside our bronze age. The same as the Unicorn, the Fae, and other twilight magikal beings.

This age may only be seen as you have stated, if one has the "sight". There is a book written about it called "The quest for the Dragon Tooth". Damned good read.

i personaly believe that there were and maybe still are somewhere.....there is a snake (not lizard) that has lengs but still moves like a snake, like that chinese dragon

as for that cave some historians/psycologist think thst why that image of a dragon apperse in most culture is that it is a the image fromed when a man thinks of a three of is natureal preditors at the same time (snake, tiger, and hawk)

Same with the paleolithic era, when man shared the world with the dinosuars, cave painting and all, before the cataclysm began. Before the earth started shifting and the ice age began...Yeah, those were the days.

Movies seem to distort alot of cold hard fact.

I remember speaking to my Form Tutor about this...
He said its very possible for a creature to be able to spit chemicals that would ignite and there are Lizards that can glide so flight isn’t exactly stretching the imagination

Though i really don’t think that dragons where around when nights ran around on horse back. There would be far more proof such as a great big Skull as a trophy!

what about the possibility of a dinosaur that had managed to survive all this time? would explain the giant flying lizard...

Adding to my point,
when fossils are found they aren’t always complete and scientists have to guess how they go together!

so for all we know fossilss have been found but they’ve been put together to look like a rabbit....

or the dragons might not be old enough to fossilise or something of the way they decompose might mean they cant fossilise.... who knows?

dragons are dinosaurs which survived.if you look at heralri dragons you can clearly see they are carnosaours.the original beowulf legend decribed a herrenosaur perfectly.the bible decribes a brontosaurus(the lethiathen of joab) and several ancient writers describe pterosaurs.and there is a dinosaur footprint hidden in the secret vault of the natural history museum with a human footprint inside it .everytime phyical evidence appears the scientists supress it for fear of the great lie of dawinism being exposed and they would lose their lucrative jobs.the viking dragon legends say that dragons spat venom and did not breath fire.

I am not sure.

Could be that such a creature existed, and now is residing in some other Realm, for security reasons.

Other than that, it could be a product of human imagination.

Ah Myth from Reality. This reminds me of a book I read on the search for the Mythical Griphon. The author was so fascinated that he went in search of the origin. Along the way he discovered Mammoth Bones Labled as Cyclops in ancient Roman Museums. He eventually traced the stroy of the Griphon to a place in the stepps known of the Valley of the Griphon. Once there he discovered hundreds of Protoceratops Skeletons half embedded in the rocks.

Humans and dinosaurs did not exist at the same time.

Not speaking astrally, mythically, or some special vr time zone, but the archeological evidence is not there. Human remains have not been found alongside dinosuar remains, or in the case of T-Rex, inside them.

If there is proof to the existance of dinasours could dragons not be a winged one which breathed fire? every myth is started with a piece of fact... which one who's knows but I could believe it came from this.

To me how come it's harder to believe in Vampires than it is to believe in dragons or unicorns for some? is it because one represents evil and the other not?

I find it interesting that dragons of some sort do appear in so many different cultures. At the same time some of what we think of as dragons are kind of loosely interpreted as that. I think we want to see dragons in every culture. As people we have a tendency to see what we want to see. I think it is just coincidence that things we like to group as dragons appear throughout history in many different cultures. I think dragons are myth as we know them today. Just good fantasy.

I would love to see if Dragsons really existed as i come from a country which has one as the national flag:) and you know what they say, ther's no snoke without fire...no pun intended, Lol.

But, seriously, there could possibly have been a creature that loosely resembled the creature sometime when people were still living in caves, after all look at all the other creatures that existed in that era, and then as others have said, the stories got orally passed down through the generations???

I can't remember the details but a few years ago they found what they believed at the time to be the remains of a dragon. I can't remember much, I'll try to look it up. There are actually quite a few scientists that belive they more than likely existed. They even believe that it is possible for them to have breathed fire. If you've ever watched Reign of Fire than you've seen how they think it would have worked. They used the fact that there is an insect that does something quite similar when it's attacked to support this idea. Again, I don't remember enough of the details so I'm going to try to find some information to share. I do also believe the idea that they may have moved to another plane of existence. There are many myths with creatures and beings that just seem to stop suddenly. This gives the impression that the myths were based on something real that suddenly wasn't there anymore.

Alright, since the definition of dinosaur is enormous reptile, then primates may not have existed during this era, but at the closing of it. There are records that show proof of this, fossils dating to millions of years ago, when the cataclyms did occur. When the sabretooth and mammoth were still with the cavemen of old.

Not argueing a point, just stating fact.

This link supports my opinion on this matter regarding mankind and dinosaurs.

Coexistance

Given that so many different cultures from all over the globe have a dragon like creature recorded as having existed I do believe they were real. The flying, fire breathing and huge size I'm not so sure about since mankind has always loved to exaggerate and make a story sound better. Why would the cultures of old be any different than modern man in that respect? They may have actually been much smaller and have died off naturally, so small in fact that any fossils are dismissed as from another creature.

I believe there are such things as dragons for instance there are spirit dragons that i have seen in pictures take at a friend of mines house
they're not visible to the naked because of the fact that they move to quickly
but in the picture they look more like fog but theres long streaks of yellow blue and i think green lights (odd yes i know)
ok if your curious then take a look at the link this one of the pics that show what looks like an emperor dragon head

I believe that dragons existed at one time or another, just like every other mythical creature. The legends, myths and folklore had to come from something or someone that actually experienced it. I don't think people back in the stone ages, per se, had the great imaginations that we have today.

People in every culture have their own beliefs as to why certain stories have evolved.

Ok, nothing I say here is new. They are, however, my thoughts on the subject.

I tend to believe dragons were real because there are so many legends about them worldwide, originating in eras when said cultures had no contact with eachother.

There are new fossilized species being discovered every decade, and we have to admit that governments hush up what they don't want known. As has been stated before, skeletal remains of long extinct creatures are usually incomplete, and have been put together incorrectly many times.

By the way, numerous bones have been destroyed when they were used as medicinal cures in some cultures for thousands of years, and other bones have been entirely mis-identified.

Soulshroud- You know its funny how cultures classify ancient Bones. Too often then not they tend to get lumped together under a general heading.
America uses - Dinsaur Bones
Ancient Rome Used - Giant Bones
China and most of the Orient Use - Dragon Bones
And I am sure there are others.

I believe in dragons. We still have some today like the Kamoto dragon. I believe that dragons are really pre-historic, or descendants of these creatures. It may be possible for some to still exist because we still have more of the Earth to see. There are places like the deep rain forests which man has never set eyes upon. Makes you wonder...

I agree with the thought that the dragon theory may have been simply made up about very large reptiles, but you have to ask yourself, where did they go? becaes though it was a very long time ago, the stories about dragons go far back past the 1100's and they vary throughout different countries, so WHo's to say they didn't or maybe they're just one person's really vivid imagination.

here's an odd thought. Maybe many different cultures have stories because in this one instance humans have a shared genetic memory? and this memory is a throw back to very early in our evolution? just a thought

i do not think that they are real. no matter how much i love them and how beautiful of a creature they are. i do believe there is a possibility that there could have been something similar. such as dinosours? there were flying ones (resmebling monsterous birds), sea dragons (ones that resemble the lochness monster), and the typical land dragons (lizards, amphibians, ect. ) these may all be decendants from dinosours. and as for the sea dragons go, you never know what is thriving beneath so many undiscovered, untouched by man, world under the ocean.
i think that its just a matter of your scientific beliefs

I really want to believe that dragons exist but I have a feeling they were either exaggerations and or misinterpreted creatures. One theory of how they were able to fly may explain why there is no physical evidence. Some scientists believe that based on the typical descriptions if they did exist their bones would have to have been hollow or very porous to allow flight. If that is the case that might explain why no bones have survived.

I believe that something existed in the past that was dragon like. Just can’t say what but almost all known civilizations have in their history some sort of dragon or dragon like creature. The common features being that they where winged serpent or lizard like beasts some being able to breath fire and that it took a mighty hero or god to slay them.

The Discovery channel did a great show on them and tackled the concepts of how an immense creature could evolve to be able to fly and breathe fire:

Dragons

Sabre-tooth tigers and mammoths were mammals. The rise of mammals, including humans, came after the demise of dinosaurs.

Exception: a tiny rodent-like mammal managed to survive not only the giant feet of dinosaurs, but the cataclysm that wiped out the large reptiles.

It is unlikely that each earth period had a clear black/white demarcation with the species who walked, flew and swam.

There would have been some blurring of the edges, but the evolution of humans took thousands of years . . . after the demise of dinosaurs.

Shining: there are flying snakes . . . now. Saw a national geographic special on those crazy reptiles, squirming up trees and leaping to another.

Pterodactyls were flying dinosaurs. My favorite.

hmmm.... now that you talk about that... what if one day a long time from now some people have a conversation like this about something like... the thylocines... I do know some people who do not think they ever existed even though they have had one in a zoo within the past century... what if that becomes myth? But I think that it would be more difficult or dragons to then the thylocine because they have thylocine bones... unless the dragons bones were hollow and were unable to fossilize like some have said here.

A lot of you have mentioned the komodo dragon, and yes I have thought about there being a link many times while thinking about if dragons were real or not. The komodo dragons saliva is highly poisonous and can kill a human... although it normally goes after smaller things like the farmers chickens. Then there is the bombadeer beetle (I don't know if I spelt that right) which makes a bomb or 'fire' as I have heard some scientists say on animal planet. I do believe I heard on animal planet that they made a link between the poisonous saliva of the komodo dragon to the chemicals which the beetle uses. (but the saliva has something more that last I heard was still a mystery.) If they can compare the beetles bomb to fire, then why not the dragons saliva?

Just my thoughts about the komodo dragon being connected to dragons that breath fire. Maybe they did at one time... idk.

Some of you got dropped on your head as babies didn't you?

No dragons are not real, they are mythical. The closest this world has ever came to a dragon is the komodo dragon, dinosaurs and lizards. Look at your most typical paintings/ pictures of dragons. Most pretty much look like a giant iguana. Or snakes.

It is plausible that dragons did exist in some form or another. 8000 to 10000 years ago around when human civilization began, it could have been possible for creatures to exist which were almost extinct by then. Today they are no longer here; animals such as Dromornis stirtoni(Giant Ostrich/Emu), Castoroides ohioensis (Giant Beaver), and Phororhacos (8 foot tall bird). It is possible that such animals at that time to be mistakenly thought of as dragons by early humans.

Another theory is, that ancient peoples, discovered huge bones, just as we do today, but they didn't comprehend what we now know today, so they came up with all kinds of stories of monsters and dragons and giants with one eye (Goliath). When really they were mere fossils of dinosaurs.

yes I know, but it is what they know and believe to be true. It is also possible that some of the others who said the same thing that you did might think you meant them and get offended.

I have no problem if you insist that what you believe is right, however I do not appreciate when people do not allow others to have thier own opinion and state it. (that is what this thread is for)

The dinosaur hypothesis works for me!
Here in my parts (Romania, Europe) at the country, the people still call dinosaur bones as "oase de uriesi" (troll`s bones).
It is possible that some big dinosaurus survived untill the hystorical times came.
In the inner words and mystic spheres of existence they do exist.
