Myth with a likely foundation in exceptable notional theory, If a civilization so advanced in engineering had the knowledge to build such things as claimed by those that persue the ledgen then would it follow that they should have known as well that building on an unstable ocean shelf would be a bad idea, if you look at some of the original cleared foundations in greece you would see that they abandoned some more sites previous to the final placements. Some cultures and travelers used
markers to show landing sites for expititions these have been claimed (and even caused division in the atlantis theorist) to be proof of atlantist. Aristotal
told children a story and wow what a tale.
I don't think it's entirely necessary to post the whole article from another site. I appreciate the desire to be thorough but perhaps just linking to the article or posting a portion of it would be a good way to insure that the thread maintains a more clear intent.
I have posted in the past on Atlantis and I still believe it entirely possible that Antartica has a history about it and about mystery surrounding previous ancient maps of it that make me believe this could indeed be the missing Atlantis of mythology.
I believe it was there at one time, not a big as some say, I've seen hows on finding pots and other things were the city would have been.
The Atlantis we know today has never existed. As in nearly every other legend, word of mouth has thrown "Atlantis" completely off truth and point.
I believe that it existed and may now be at the bottom of the ocean, or even more possibly is under the ice caps. Who is to say? There are still plenty of mysteries in this world. All of Science is not a proven fact. A lot of it is speculation. We may someday yet discover the true Atlantis.
While the story is based on a myth I still believe that it is a possibility since we do know that a volcano's and/or glaciers have been a huge part of what has shaped our continents to be as they are today. Why couldn't they envelop a civilization as well.
indeed, and this is also what i believe....a Pompeii-like situation, only involving the total "eclipse" of said Atlantis, pushing it deep under the sea as the plates realigned and swallowed it whole.
We once believed that the Mycenaean culture and the Island of Create were were Greek myths written by Plato to entertain... But when archaeologist uncovered the artifacts of these advanced cultures the myth became fact. If theses cultures were written about and latter discovered it seems quite pl usable that Plato's stories of Atlantis are based in reality.... We just haven't uncovered it yet.
indeed, and i hope that someday we do find something more "concrete". the ocean is a deep and vast place, with many parts deeper than we could go right now with our existing technologies. i hope that in the future as technology grows, that we might find something to prove this fantastical "tale".
alot of people tend to think it is a Myth yet, I would hope it to be real, I mean there are alot of ancient civilizations out there that is still being unearth/found so I feel it is or could be real..
I think it is a very possible story the earth is always shifting and you never know what may happen to islands being build and moving as the plates below the earth shifts.
Most probably a myth but I'd like to think there was such an island. So much written on it, TV documentaries, endless reading online for it. The Greeks talked about it.. and the Atlantic ocean was named for this mythical island.
There is another lesser known mythical island called Mu.
As a motive for those that speculate on atlantis I chase it back to not only book sells but also, believe it or not, a lot of grant money from the coffers of university funds, .. even after for three years in a row a leading atlantis theorist supplied nothing but various reinterpitations of pending archiologist finds. In the process he drained the coffers of those very digs. Hows that for motive to pursue a myth?
I think that most things of this nature have at lease some basis in fact.
One thing that I always took into account was that most of the old stories talk about how advanced the civilization was. Well, if you look at the time period in which the original stories were written it doesn't necessarily mean that they were capable of nuclear power, or even the combustion engine for that matter. The stories come from a long, long time ago. So, something we take for granted could have easily be seen as a technological wonder in that time period.
I go in looking for an agenda. the guy pocketing money usally stands out from the academics, usually because they put out a book every time they have a revelation about their unsupported theories. But fiction released as non fiction pays better then fiction. Because if you copy a work of fictions idea it is graft plagerism, but to lead people to believe such a place exist is a "quest" that people will pay grant money for as well.
Critias and Timaeus a utopian fable from plato, I said aristotle .. my bad.
I remember watching something about how some scientists believe that Cuba may be the last remaining part of Atlantis that is above water.
So I believe
Well, as Felix pointed out...Antarctica is an excellent theory...
I still stand by mine as it being a few miles off the coast of Florida, as being around the Burmuda area. This may explain why the true north of the compass always finds its way here.
Could explain the reason why marble oblisks and ruins are found that far out to sea as well.
I believe most myths have some basis in fact. For years, people wanted to know if the flood of Noah really happened - there are flood stories from all over the globe. And recent archaeological excavations in the Black Sea have shown that there was a vast flood with changes in the sealife (from fresh water to salt water) that took place there. And there was also an ancient shoreline underneath the present one. So i say yes - there must have been something that happened to get the stories started.
Cross referencing the "great flood" with the "Atlantian mythos", could be a good reason why the city sank in the first place. Who knows how far the flood actually traveled. Scientists apparently do not know if the flood was on a global or continental scale.
Well my analysis says its a truth.
Civilizations changes very fast, geeographies and boundaries changes very fast, but tales do not take place without the truth,
Take an example of Vlad III he was truely impaler. he did such a agression that his protected area lure in love of him. and other treat him fierce vampire. If he would not be an important person of history, his portrait would not kept as most precious in the Vienna's International Musiem.
Like wise if Atlantis was not truth and Thera was not there, how the Atlantis took place on map and Thera in civilizations, communities and skills?
Its all true its not lie king kong of picture or draculla of pictures.
Its not came first from teh mouth of plato, plato said all on the basis of that time coven and therian community peepal was there.
It was a big Empire and whole Europe was led by it.
Since actually searching the ocean is still in its early exploration we may not find out the truth until we are long gone and our childrens children find the technology to seek further depts.
It is sure that Atlantis existed, beacuse every "Myth" wich humans cultivate trough ages is in reallity a true fact, but thanks to the incorrect pass trough years from generation to generation, the more precise version of the story got considerably changed in tale it self wich is being told(it is the human nature to tell a story differently every time, for his mind was not present there exactly when it happend, or he was but doesnt remember any more precisely, wich leads to a different story to different extent of the content of that story, most important he heard it from somebody/where else), and of course that is what makes what we call a Myth, a incorrect tell tale information to believe of something that happend, but was forgotten, and it became a fairy tale in the minds of the new generations wich cant imagine other things as possible thanks to their own ways of extremly altered life styles, and culture, wich when compared with some ideas in a certain Myth story simply do not make any sense to the todays mind wich calls all that ridicilous, and a very good bed time story. Another reason why it is called a Myth, only.
I personaly believe that Atlantis very well existed, now how much the things are overexagurated or not in many versions of the Myth I really do not know, and does it matter?
We could simply go by logic, and understand that such thing existed, and its inhabitors had much more knowledge than we have for what is to us incredible, and to create it.
Logic tells us thanks to the historical facts that many civilisations existed well before us, and why not they be modern? Incredible? More incredible than us?
After all we are not the ones wich started the existence, or the first movements of it. It existed long time before us, and our interpretation of the world, wich is anyway limited.
It is clear by all the version of the Atlantis Myth, that some certain Societies Existed Before, and they were in some certain dissagreement, wich eventualy resulted of course, in one annihilating another, by some superior developed means, wich is very natural behavior troughout human history, and the future.
As well I believe that much of the truth is hidden from us, the plain folk wich makes todays society. Much things are concealed. Many truths, many stories, including the one truth about ever questioning topic of Atlantis as well.
Atlantis was an Utopic land and it was Plato`s way of presenting a perfect society for his greek citizens.
Blavatski and later Himmler used it too.
I like Lovecraft`s tale based and Jules Verne`s desription in one of his extraordinary novels but it`s only a tale unfortunately.
I have read Plato`s tale and like 6 books on that subject, both pro and against.
However it`s possible that the tale was inspired by some cataclism or an old story, but Plato modified it to obtain a moral tale.
I do not see the reason to state your self in such a strong fashion based only on your personal opinion Dragonrouge, wich in reality does not possess any sufficient proof, or even reality based idea, by wich it could realisticly support such a strong conclusive statement regarding the Atlantis island.
In the matter of fact the archeological underwater ruins speak just differently.
They tell a tale of ancient civilisation, wich did existed once, and dissapeard under the ocean surface.
The texts and the archeological findings, I believe lead us to that conclusion, with logic of things, that something like the island of Atlantis did existed.
Although we do not know what and how exactly, it did existed.
Ahh Atlantis,a subject close to my heart.I believe absolutely, but where or what,we might never know..but then, who knows,we just might figure it out..hopefully in my lifetime.Either way,we disscussed this recently ,and I thought I would post the link to the thread in case anyone wanted to read it as well.

I believe that it did exist sometime and maybe still does. But the Atlantis we know as a fairy tale does not exist. The ice caps and what not are still mysteries to us. There is a lot on this Earth that are still unexplored. Atlantis was very well an island probably and due to continental drift and what not was lost kinda like how Italy is sinking now. Locals probably built onto that story to make it more interesting. Seems like that's how myths start out. As old realities.
indeed, and as the continental plates are constantly shifting, it is highly possible it sunk into, and was absorbed, by the very deep depths of the sea.
I am quite skeptical about the existence of a nation or island called Atlantis. The first record or mention of Atlantis comes from Plato when discussing his philosophies on states. He was not giving factual records of cities but using analogies to create a dialogue to explain his theories.
Have you read any Zecharia Sitchin? He has written several docu-novels about not only Atlantis, but the idea that the Roman or Greek Gods may have been from another planet entirely.
"Biography and Key Ideas
Sitchin was born in Russia, was raised in Palestine, graduated from the University of London with a degree in economic history. He worked for years as a journalist and editor in Israel before settling in New York.
Sitchin, like Velikovsky and Däniken, presents a compelling and entertaining story based on belief about ancient visitors from other worlds. Zecharia Sitchin's key ideas are based on the assumption that ancient myths are not myths but historical and scientific texts. According to Sitchin, ancient Sumerian clay tablets reveal that gods from another planet (Nibiru, which orbits our Sun every 3,600 years) arrived on Earth some 450,000 years ago and created humans by genetic engineering of female apes. "
I belive that Atlantis has existed once a long time ago. But the myth of it has been told and translated so many times that it has kinda glorified it, making it exeptional.
A location; I would have to go with the Bermuda Triangle as well. It is the closest coordinates to what I have heard, and with the findings as someone else pointed out.
I do not think that more scientific research should be done untill they have some way of finding the real coordinates, and some more sophisticated equipment.
Well as much as I would like to believe that it is real, simply because I didn't see it. I partly believe that it is real and I partly believe that it isn't... All the stories are so facinating and interesting and it makes it seem so real but it's amazing what the imagination can do.
old maps of its whereabouts have revealed nothing there, really, so i think that maps drew it there on "speculation" versus actual facts.
Count in another Bermuda Triangle theory supporter. It would make sense to me if Atlantians had some interesting/effective technology that was lost with their island, but somehow still affects navigation tools used today.
Based on my relative lack of knowledge of the myths and stories of Atlantis, I would have to say that I don't believe that if it existed that it was the grand society and culture that many stories describe it as.
I would more readily believe that it was a coastal community of some power and influence that was destroyed by an earthquake or tsunami or some other grand act of nature (like the 3 freaking hurricanes that hit me in FL a few years ago).
i think that the bermuda triangle makes sense in a way to help tie in a "magical island" with a present-day phenom.
I do believe that it existed at one time, and is probably now under the ocean. Think about it like this: in a thousand years, how much of the world we know now will probably be underwater?
I personally have seen threads like this about 3 or 4 times. asking whether it existed would be in my opinion much better as a poll yes or no.However
I personally love atlantis talk,I believe it exists and it lies under the ring of fire. currently the only area that has yet to actually be excavated in majority of the means.Due to the instability in that region however if you do your research then the ring of fire does make a valid area to do real research for some artifact.
that's actually a very valid point. that is one of the few areas not available to excavation.
Reality. They found some stone "things" under the sea, off the coast of Florida. They are flat and could be some sort of runway or road. This is part of Atlantis they said.
A reader once told me that I lived in Atlantis and was one of the higher up Holy people. This does go along with stuff in my past life part of astro chart.
all myth is based on some truth so i would say there was a city that was proberly advanced but i doubt is tank into the see it problery was just destroyed or they have called it someting else
Atlantis was a real place, the dimensions, the style all is too clearly given to be a myth. How far advanced they were, their religion, where they went after their island continent sank that is where the myth begins
Atlantis is a huge snowball. some Greek scolar made vague references to a lost city, and people use that to build their own dreams on. anything we can ever dream of in science fiction could have been possible long ago in Atlantis, but it is now all lost because their hubris and foolish tampering with technology destroyed them.. it's a morality tale used by Luddites who are unable to live in with the modern age. of course there are lost cities and civilisations that died long ago - lots of them, it happens all the time. but they were only more advanced than the primitive tribes they descended to, not some vast supertechnical race of scientists / wizards . they built a city, that had a centralised system of government and a pretty sophisticated social structure, possibly on a par with the Greeks or the Egyptians, and they kept slaves. that's about all is known (or thought to be known), and probably all there is to it. The Greeks were probably talking about the Mayans, or some other such people.
those roadways near Florida has been excavated numerous times. And there has been no markings or anything referring to them being of any lost civilization.Yes it is still possible, however those were found I believe 10 years ago and unless the historians or someone is trying to keep it quiet. Then I doubt those underwater stones have to do with atlantis.
A varied poll would be better then just yes do you believe and no do you not believe, some would perhaps check do you feel their needs to be more grant money spent on research, to guys that use that money to travel to exotic places and dig through speculative writings by other guys who once needed something achademic sounding to support their application for a grant to get money to travel on. One of them happened to be lucky enough to tag along on an actual excavation and he began to write up his interpitation before the academics tagged and labled things for study and reference. I mean if you look at the credintials of some of these people you will find a telling pattern.
The "Road to Atlantis" or Bimini Road was actually discovered in the late 60's I believe. Edgar Cayce, a well know "psychic" said that proof of Atlantis would be found at around the same time. I just wonder which came first. The chicken or the egg?
Legends often have some truth behind them, perhaps the city did once exsist, and something did happen giving the appearence that it was wipped away, and from there the stories grew into the legends they are today.
I think that Atlantis is real, but the story has been stretched to the point where it`s all over-exaggerated. I do believe it exsisted, but not to the magnatude of the myths.
I believe that atlantis is both a myth and realistic, I believe that atlantis was a real place that had sunk to the sea, but i believe that all the magic and other things that fictionists make up is crap.
(sorry) Whos to say that Atlantis was built on higer ground in its prime and do to the earth ever changing climate earthquakes etc that is way the city is known to underwater
I would say that Atlantis was probably real, but nothing like what everyone wants to make it out to be. It was probably a fairly "advanced" civilization, but I use that term lightly. Its much more likely that the stories just became widely exagerated(obviously) as time went on.
I firmly believe that every myth and legend is based on some form of truth, be it slightly warped/ romantised for the masses.
So yes i do believe that at one point Atlantis has existed.
I believe that Atlantis is reality. The story is believable. It was destroyed be floods and earthquakes and volcanoes, not hard to believe that.
Very true as per many cities where destroyed by the force of nature over the ages.
i think its a compendium of lst civilisations destroyed over the ages before the late bronze age.
i personally think that it has to be more then a myth cause nobody's imagination is that great to create such a place
I feel that we would all be quite mistaken to say that Atlantis did not exist, but I don't feel that it was the technological marvel that it is sometimes portrayed as.
Well i have mix emotions on this i believe there was a civilization but nothing to the hype of what Atlantis is
I once saw something on TV that claimed that in the very, very distant future civilization could possibly dismiss the existence of the pyramids. It was speculated that they would be decayed so much that they would be classified as a myth. Perhaps this is along the same vein.
good point, jack...that perhaps it got so greatly decayed that it is practically non-existent now?
I would love to see them find traces of it and to see how far they were with technology. We may even learn things
