Ok people.
Gather around!! I wanna hear everyone's take on this particular person's history. There are those who say she was evil, there are those who say she was a vampire, there are those who say she made a helluva deli meat sandwich.
I wanna hear them all. But mostly, do you think she got what she deserved or was she and three of her four "counterparts" just another victim(s) of the Spanish Inquisition?
She was one sadistic disturbed woman...worse, she had unlimited power over her subjects ( it was only when she started to pick victims from upper class families that she got into trouble).
It makes me wonder...how does a person turn out that way? I've read nothing on whether she was abused or not - she was exposed to a lot of violence though. I wonder - what was the one thing that tipped her psyche towards sadism in the first place?
oh...she definetely did not get what she deserved. Her rank saved her ass...she should have been executed in as horrific a fashion as what she did to her victims.
Countess Bathory was not a vampire... she was a strong will person who wanted to remain beautiful and young... that's why she was taking blood baths with the blood from virgins... she also had much power.. and she was a little sick, mentally .. that's why she was torturing her victims... she had hundreds of virgins killed in her life period... she died closed in her own castle in Csejthe.. alone..
You can find a short article in the Members Articles section of VR about, Elizabeth Bathory, Here: Famous Vampires Throughout History- Part One
Isis101 I think that just killing Elisabet wasn't enough... I think she got what she deserved being closed inside her own castle .. without sunlight and food and water..
Mostly agree with Cinnamon...
She was surounded with people who did not had any powers upon her... nobody besides her husband Count Ferencz Nadasdy... when he was home she was as soft as baby's bottom... after his death... she was "in charge"..
Elizabeth Bathory was just a little mental is all she wanted her beauty and youth is all so yea she killed some virgins and took a baths in there blood. Did she get what she deserved yea I think so it's pretty sad though in my opinon.
Being locked up in your castle - with food and water - (Bathory was not starved to death) is not a fit punishment for the crimes, IMHO...
yep.. with food and water... but anyways my oppinion is that... it was a kick ass punishment:)
I love The Blood Countess,we all have our beliefs and hers were just different,I would have went about it although a different way, seducing and not torturing or killing but maybe just lightly covering myself with blood maybe,I do not condone killing or torturing but if I had a chance to go watch, she would be my first stop.
Little known fact... she was actually a distant cousin of Vlad Tepes Dracula. Personally I think its all the inbreeding of the royal bloodlines that makes them go crazy.
I agree. Studies point to a probably case of epilepsy... she was subject to fits throughout her childhood. Looks like a case of inbreeding to me.
cemetary ... Vlad tepes had nothing to do with erzsebet bathory... and vlad tepes was not crazy:)
Just goes to show what happens to a bored housewife. Just kidding.
I think she got what she deserved. Life in a little stone room would be pretty bad. Not like life in prison in modern jails.
I've read a lot on the Countess. And it is only rumored that she bathed in blood. She did however kill over 600 virgin girls
for sadistic pleasure. Some people describe her as a serial killer. Which means someone who kills for excitement and/or pleasure. But if you read "The Blood Countess" which is a great novel, you will learn that she had an extremely hard childhood. She witnessed her entire family being raped and killed at a very tender age. And I believe that had a very large impact on her reign of terror.
Countess Elizabeth Bathory is a classic example that the affluent are afforded a different set of laws than those of indegentcy and the same is true today.
In "modern" times people who were as sadistic as elizbeth bathory and vlad tepes are considered "crazy". Otherwise I wouldn't have so many assualt charges on me when its obviously justified.(in my case anyway) And I SWEAR to u they were related... like cousins twice removed... My childhood best friend did a history report for school and I helped. He showed me the family tree and how they were related.
This was an interesting read...yea I'm just now finishing reading it had other things to tend to lol and I must say that I agree with Cinnamon...hope I spelled that right lol
violence or pure demonic mind, either way the result was a bloody mess and an outcome that would create many questions but end up in never get them fully answered.
nether science or logic will probably answer the questions her existence, actions and her mind would rise across time and history.
Dear cemetary.. I'm from Romania... and vlad tepes was my "ancestor" believe I know what I'm talking about...
Nifty... u have advantage over me... My son is named Vlad. Its hard to find accurate information on historical figures such as those. Maybe our info was just false. But I remember we put it in the report and he turned it in at catholic school and the bastard always got good grades!
the information we can find on the internet allways is under this sign "?" and when it comes to personalities like this people tend to make them interesting and attractive... that's why ... this happens...
Actually I think we DID get some of the info off the net. But its been years ago when we were like 13 or so yrs old. Anyways I may dig deeper into this... but for now its to bed or I puke some more. Good night translyvaina!
Soooooo...no one here thinks that the charges laid against her were fabricated by the church because a Woman was in power after her husband died on a distant battlefield?
She wasn't even at her trial, her four quote un-quote compatriots were tried and convicted in the same day in a trial composed entirely of intimidation and torture. Any number could have been spouted just to sate the accuser.
I'm not saying this is what actually happened, but it's a strong theory, one that's supported by many people.
Not everything can be explained with the world of the supernatural. Sometimes, the reasons some things happen are just plain ol', good ol' fashioned human intolerance.
she was just a sick woman who enjoyed killing youg girls
SnowWalker I agree with you. This was a powerful woman that was condemned because she was a strong and power anc charsimatic woman in a time where men wanted complete dominance. She was loved by her people and they mourned her torture.
Bathory was accused of bathing in the blood of virgins to stay young. Now scientifically speaking in order to do this she would need about 180 gallons to fill a tub once. In a full grown man you may have about a gallon. In a 13 yrs Old girl ( these were her apparent victims) there is maybe half of that and that is assuming that all of the blood is drained completely out of the body( which is damn near impossible).
Blood also starts to congeal as soon as it touches the air. So in to time it would take to get a bath drawn of blood it would already be hard and very very tacky. The tub would also need to be vigorously strirred and heated well above what water boils at ( which would make it to hot for a person to sit in).
This was a woman that knew how to read and right and knew about 6 language. NO I can't see why she would be considered a threat to christian mentality of that time
My mom read me a story from one of her books on haunted places. I don't remember the name of the woman, but she lived in New Orleans, and was some kind of royalty.
But she would select certain slaves. Mostly virgins and break their arms, legs, and jaws. Sexually torcher them with devices she made. Then cut them open (while they were still alive and awake), pull their intestines out and nail them along the walls of their attic while still attached to the person. Pour sugar and maple syrup around the attic and on them and watch red ants eat them and sting them.
Her house was turned into a museum. But they found diaries of her stating she was the reincarnation of Elisabeth Bathory and she wanted revenge, but she was practicing on her slaves first.
Pretty damn creepy. What a crazy b**** along with Bathory. When I hear things like that it reminds me of the scene in Hostel2 of the dominatrix with the sycle.
Her and Giles du Rai both became famous for basically the same thing.
She did bathe in the blood of virgins, she believed it made her more beautiful and kept her younger, a vampire? of course.
As to the Spanish Inquisition, if one really reads the records, one sees that in a year more withces were burned in countries such as England and Germany than were burned during the over 100 years the Spanish Inquisition took place. Alas the printing press was controlled by England and Germany, and people tend to believe what they saw on print.
From what I have been told about her she didnt really drink the blood of her victums and as such wasnt really a vampire she used the blood in the belief she would keep young by being covered in it.
Whether she got what she deserved isnt really for me to say. Throughout history punishment for crimes has been different. I will say however I do believe she was stabbed in the back by her family and friends as a scape goat....from what I have read and been told.
Her victims were virgins , she got her jollies by beaten them until blood poured forth ....
So yes...
Elizabeth's story was not told from her viewpoint, and most of what is in the record is exagerated. She had protected status as a Countess, and so any wrongdoing she was accused of would have been covered up. She most likely did bathe in blood, and killed off some young woman, but not in the numbers as reported. She was at the least a psychopath who indulged herself in sadism and murder, and not a vampire. She was accused by her own staff, who participated in the blood rites, and if they had remained faithful to her she may have never been discovered.
Bloodmother12208...I think I know who you are talking about. It was a rich French slave-owning couple in New Oreleans...and their name escapes me - who tortured dozens of slaves - men and women. they were some bloodthirsty sick F---s! Kinda' like Bathory...
The only thing she had in common with vampires is her lust for blood. Her family and friends covered for her whether in fear or in a common lust.
Her undoing was when she moved away from the common people and started with the rich people as herself. Once this happened her fate was sealled. It also gave her family the chance to take her wealth.
I personally dont believe that her fate was for her crimes. I think it was more to do with her wealth and because of the times she could get away with what she done until she overstepped the boundry by attacking someone with wealth. If she was punished for her crimes why was it never really bought out.
I think she paid dearly not for her crimes but for what she had.
Countess Bathory was not a vampire, it is only hearsay that she drank blood. She did bathe in it as she believed it made your skin younger and whiter. As having porcelain skin was the fashion of the day.
Elisabeth was a cruel and cold hearted woman.
Elisabeth Bathory was a torturer! She revelled in the torture and killing of young innocent women. Her husband for a time did join her, but even he was sickened by her debauchery.
The Countess was the richest woman due to the fact she inherited a lot of land from both her father and husband. Land was the power in her day and that made many of the men uncomfortable as she was by far richer than all. Her brother in law seized an opportunity to have her brought to trial when she tortured and killed a young noble woman. She could have gone on till death killing the peasents as they were mere cattle to the nobility.
Then she was brought to trial and due to her status as a noble she was condemned to spend the rest of her life sealed in a tower. Which wasn't very long she only lived for a few years.
Elizabeht bathory was a pretty distrubed young woman but I don't think it was entirely her fault. I think she was suffering from a severe mental illness and the way she died was horrible even for her.
She was WONDERFULLY EVIL :D Her rather unique ideals made her a very awesome outstanding historical figure.
I think she was just out to cause pain and suffering. Her belief that blood can make you young was just a way for her to start her riegn of terror. She was just an evil lady and got away with it until her family had the guts to stand up to her and all that was for is her wealth. As to her punsishment well it was just as terrifying and horific. But it was what happened in those times so who's to say really.
I think her punishment was a fitting one. Her reign of terror was supposedly brought on by power, so what better way to punish her than by removing that power, and making her dwell on it? Death would have meant an easy escape.
CherryAdvocaat I agree with you ... she knew how to be...and she was evil... she was strong, respected(it doesn't matter if she was respected for fear or other things) I respect strong people...and the fact that she was a woman doubles it... even though strong and powerful people are not doing all the time good things...
I think she was severely mentally disturbed...like the article states "She thought her skin had taken on the youth of the servant girl"...she was delusional.
She was a very sexual woman, she is a woman I would have loved to have met, and dated
all we acctually know is what history tells us. It could be that the church didnt want a woman leading anything so they got rid of her. and made up the storys of ritual killings and torture. but no one alive now was alive then so who truely knows. it could have happend. or it could be a story that the church made up to save thier buts
I somewhat agree with you Tripos. The church has done some shady stuff in the past, and that theory wouldn't be something out of it's league.
She was very evil and disturbed in my eyes.. from all I have read and stuff she did not get what she deserved .. I mean the things she did to her victims OMG! sick F**** for real..
Yet, because of her unique quirkyness she will always be a fasinating historical figure, but not vampire. Only blood thirsty as one LOL
on would think, if she drew a bath.. and added as much blood as she could get.. would she also have found use for blood in other things.. Make-up, creams and lotions.. Peasants where cattle.. a daughter could be sought for service to the castle, and any excuse could be fabricated to appease the families inquiry, yet she became the subject of suspicion .. going through more young victims then she and her "enablers" (I am sure that they where passed around to the "court") could accont for. Then she went and sought a peer.. see once a serial killer changes M.O. they get caught. So a family member saw that as a oppertunity to get the estate deal of the century .. can you blame him.. ?
Personally think she had some severe mental issues, which at those times, there was no doctors for that.
she will always be an interesting historical figure is all I can say, Issues is an understatement in my opinion LOL
She is without a doubt one of the greastest serial killers in Earth's history....
think of queen Elizabeth in Blackadder II (miranda richardson) only slightly less sane, and you have a good idea of what she was like. some people think she should have been tortured, but i have a feeling she would have enjoyed that.
As I read up on a few things. It appears she got a "slap on the wrist" because they didn't want it to appear they where trying her for being a witch.. which was slowly coming to scrutiny at the time.. I mean wouldn't that suck if people thought they where only after her for being a witch..
oh she was twisted but i think the inquisitors were out looking for anything that couldn't be explained.so no i don't think she got what she deserved.wasn't long ago I was watching a show on the history channel about witches and was saying something as simple as a birth mark could have you executed for being a with.it was overkill
http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/Veranda/7128/
My thoughts is she is a murdering monster, but that is just my opinion. She was a lunatic, who thought the blood of virginal girls would keep her young and was evil and twisted enough to love to torture her victims, some survived and most did not.
They should have turned those left alive who she tortured on to her, instead of imprisoning her.
I also heard that she was a type of woman that bathed in the blood of vergins. The vergins were kept in the basement of her house. After a while she was locked up until she died.
I am in pure awe of how she killed so many girls and never got caught for such a long period of time? What she did, yes I agree, was very disturbing and sick.
I personally think Vanity got to her head and corrupted her to such a point to no return. Although, a person has to be fairly weak minded for that to happen, or so one would think...
An those that may have known but, kept quite.. they were likely defiling those once virgins.. I mean the third party activity always makes underlings act-up. tThey "turned a blind eye" perhaps because they where in on the graft.

i think she was very sick and damented to no return.
i feel sorry for the victimes and there loved ones.
i don't think she got what she deserved.
Sad Thing Is That The Only Reason Anything Was Done Was She Started Killing Nobel's
At that time it was soooo normal to kill people ... all the people she killed were under her power... it was not like today.... and the greatest punishemnt was for her to see her body getting old and ugly... she was a witch , she knew many herbs, and she was on "drugs"...in the end she saw what she was afraid to death to see... to see herself getting ugly and old... for her it was the ultimate punishment... and I'm speaking from her point of view... of course from our point of view... there will be no punishment to cover what she did.. at that time people were naive... they really believed that they could life forever. her malice was pure, naive and simple . she wanted to be young and it did not matter what she was using.
I think that like Vlad Tepes, she was a sociopath and a homicidal maniac. She, like him, killed for excitement and pleasure. There was no blood baths and no attempts at immortality. She bludgeoned most as I recall and they were usually servants in the wrong place at the wrong time. There is no excuse for this behavior but the causes are most assuredly rooted (again like Vlad) in a disturbed and violent childhood.
FelixFelix... please read the thread ... and please read the Tepes Castle thread... please:)
I respectfully disagree with your opinion of Vlad in that thread. This is not something that is excused by 'what had to be done' or a leader controlling his people. He not only committed atrocities on his own people in the name of justice but also tried to exterminate the poor as a means of solving hunger and poverty. Regardless of the pressures of leadership, those are in fact signs of sociopathy. Like Miss Bathory, the idea that one is able to seperate themselves from common social morality and to consider themselves both above human concerns of justice and more importantly to show no regret for their actions, is sociopathic and beyond simple murder as a crime of class or passion.
Vlad did not wanted to exterminate the poor as a means of solving hunger and poverty. that was a normal thing.... the country was in war... he neded all the men that could fight... i agree atrocities were committed... but as I said we cannot jugde them by our rules and laws... there were different times... times when people were not equal:) don't talk about sociopathy :P And I completely disagree with you and your oppinion about Vlad. the thread is very informative...and everyone who reads it get another oppinion about Tepes:) try to read all the posts.. not only mine:) I'm not that good at it :P
i think it was a crule way she was put to death she was used to being surrounded by those who doted on her hand and foot some paid with thier lives ... i believe every great ruler has killed just for kicks and giggles cause they could and it became a sport but for EB she just wanted to stay young and she believed she found a way ... with her power mmmm she had the right to do what she did iam not saying she was right just that she was with in her right
Whe I first started reading this post, i couldnt place the name, but as i continued to read, wow. i guess it just goes to say that still to this day those amoung power are still untouchable for their crimes . I remeber hearing something about how she thought she would have everlasting beauty from bathing in the blood, but i never real associated it with vampire lore because i never heard that she drank it, just bathed in it. I did come across an article online that stated as a child she witness a brutal murder of a gypsy whome was then stuffed and sewed into a horse and left to die , that is pretty gruesome. i found that at....
http://www.whataslacker.com/backdoor/elizabeth_bathory/
granted it is from the internet so who knows what the truth is.
She was an amazingly sensual woman. Her worst sin was that she proved that she could be as tough as the men around her, she could be cruel, when cruelty was needed, she was intelligent, she was outspoken, independent, all things that in that time were frowned upon
She wasn't a vampire -- however, she could be considered a mad-woman much like Vlad Tepes was a mad-man.
well for someone who has been said to have killed hundreds of people she really didn't get what she deserved and only being charged for killing 80 of those hundreds there is no justice for the ones she didn't get charged with. I really am facinated by her though and would love to have been able to talk to her and find out why she was doing these things and what was going through her head at the time.
MBK.... please read the thread "tepes castle" tepes wasn't mad at all... and I posted that earlier:)
Deserved what she got? Able to stay in her own home, & get regular meals? No I think she deserved a damn sight lot more than that. Like her guts pulled out in public.
I read about her a few years ago, if I remember rightly, shes the one that performed sexual kinds of torture on her victims?
Oh geesh, she was a sadistic serial killer through and through, many sadists like blood and it doesn't mean that she was a vampire. Just off her rocker so to speak. And no one that kills ever gets their just desserts, she didn't as she was protected by her status.
Most definitely not a vampire. Just your average run of the mill delusional schitzo psychotic mad woman.
Being drawn and quartered would've been too good for her in my opinion.
She didn't actually -drink- the blood, she bathed in it. So I wouldnt class her as a vampire? More along the lines of a sicko that just got a thrill from the pain of others.
KaddaveR -
I didn't mean he was actually insane, just that what he did was. ;]
Impaling thousands of Turks, setting a Hall full of people on fire, impaling small animals ... not sane. ;]
she was beautyful powerful and strong and well remembered and that denotes immortality and combined with her crimes i would say yes she was scratch that is a vampire
Distortion... for elisabet torturing people was better than a sexual act....
and MBK zo did not understand all the things me and DragonRouge were saying. about vlad... terror was the only way to defend his people against turks. ( can you express your oppinion about vlad in that thread... I don't want to be offtopic)
We're both the same person. ;]
Anywho, insofar as it being sexual, that can be considered true -- although also insane. ;D
LiVndedgirl -
Beauty and power does mean immortality. Nor a vampire.
If it did ... well, we'd have a lot of creepy ass little vampy's in history. ;D
She had to have been Barbie minded as hell if she was so obsessed with beauty. Everybody wants to look good...but DAMN. If she wasn't insane, she most definitely lacked sense and was obviously a spoiled baby and did whatever she wanted and got whatever she wanted...
but I still stick with insanity.
It just sounds more logical.
int that time.. and here I repeat myself... people really believed that they could find the "potion" of imortality and eternal beauty.they tried almost everything..
For some reason I'm guessing you don't know NocnaMora and Singularity? ;]
Anywho, misterstikki, I believe what she did is a ... well a more ancient way of what people do to try to look young today, with face-lifts and surgery and whatnot.
you could very well be right D..people go to great lengths to look more beautiful. Even if it means distorting the way they look in the future. Sad, but true.
