In the last thread on Family, people were equally split on whether they would abandon their human families if they became blud-sucking vampires (in the fictional sense); keep away from them in order not to do them harm; offer them the option of becoming vampires, as well.
Many of you described stages of disillusionment or euphoria after your rebirth, but most of you indicated that you would not want to be alone.
Every family has secrets, rules, and expectations. If you were to create a vampire family, how would you structure it?
Would you replicate your human family with a matriarch and patriarch (mom and dad) heading the clan?
What would you aspire to as a Sire? Think about what your ideal Sire (not a vr sire) might be like and describe her/him in terms of personality.
What would you expect of a mate? Is there an ideal size for the family?
Management not your style?
Perhaps you would prefer to find a preexisting vampire family that you might join. What would you look for?
I think i answered to the last thread..
I have only my duaghter and now 2, not 3 cats oin the livinng world
If i had *human..................* family
I would prob not give them up....
anyone who says yeah...why not...sorry, a Vampyre family wouldnt want them as they sure aint showing any repect are they......
I'd try & give my family the choice, but if they didn't want it, then I'd obviously leave.
How big would I make my family... Not very. The more of us there are, the more likely we are to being exposed by "mishaps"
I would want to be with my family but without them knowing, I would take a night job or a something like that and tell them I need sleep during day to be able to work.
But I would stay with my family, at night I would join my Vampire family, I do not want to be alone.
I would mainly be alone.... Every now and then turn someone as a hobby and teach them for a bit or take someone as a mate, but after I was done with them I would leave.... It might hurt to lose them, but pain goes away over time..... I wouldnt see myself as settling down in a family right away... Maybe over time yes, but at first I would want to go out and do my own thing for abit.
I dont know id have to think hard to answer i love my family, but haven a family of the night grins evily id have to no choose and decide with both worlds an keep it secret, between them
It wouldn't be hard for me to leave my family. All I have is my mom and sister really. My sister I'd miss the most. But the rest no, I never see them anyways.
oh oops, I misunderstood the question sorry.
I think I would probably just play it by ear. Id go off on my own for a bit, and after a while i would want to find a mate, and a family. I think I'd rather join a family then make my own.
It's interesting to see people pick things apart to find something that suits them. They take a story or concept where someone becomes a vampire and must be alone, and they turn it around and find ways that they would not be alone, regardless of how selfish the concept is.
You see it other places, people are hardcore vampires but they were born in a special way or have some kind of magic so they're a daywalker and can change form but still look like a normal human...
I don't know.. When you become a vampire, in the classic story sense, you are indeed a twisted creature. Still in a human form, you become the predator of other humans, how could you put your family through that just because you don't want to be alone?
its not an easy question, I personaly am not sure were i stand. I have friends who would leave and never return and others that would make family and friends eternal. its easy to say now yes or no but when it comes down to it i would find the desission probly my hardest.
You also should take into mind that a lot of people are not very close to there familys to start with. if you have nearly nothing to do with your family or an outcast to your family are you going to want to have them around with you forever?
I think that is a question that one can only answer honestly if they were actually in that situation. I mean the fairy tale of Edward Cullens and Bella Swan seem like the perfect situation. I would probably try to find a happy medium somehow, but again I could not give a completely honest answer until I was in that situation.
Vampire "families" would be rare, imo.
By their nature, vampires are solitary hunters and only those with a voyeuristic bent would enjoy watching another vampire at work.
Also, there is no guarantee what human qualities would remain once transformed. So, dear old mom, or sis, or your generous boyfriend or passive girlfriend, might become something entirely new.
For me, that would be harder to deal with than taking my chances with an unknown vampire.
If I were to create a vampire family, I would only have four or five members, with the matriarch and patriarch leading the family, I think things would work out better if you had two vampires leading the group and keeping order.
What would you aspire to as a sire?
Well I wouldn't really have some kind of goal to achieve, except to try to keep my family and myself alive in this world.
My ideal sire (or leader of the family) would be someone who is strong, capable of protecting the vampire family. Someone who cares about the family and will do any thing to protect them.
I would keep the family small, like I said, four or five members.
I wouldn't want to join a preexisting family because they're already accustomed to how things are with them, if someone else joined that vampire would probably be considered an outcast for a while. I think it would be best to create a new family for other vampires who haven't found one yet.
I think I would try to be the leader of the family if I was the one who turned these people, then yeah it would only be right for me to teach them, and guide them. But if vampires that have been vampires for a while, people that I haven't turned, wanted to join then I would kind of try to run the group as a team, let everyone make decisions.
well i have to agree that even if you wanted your family with you forever who is to say they would want that also once they changed over... everyone is different when they have different options in their lives and situations.. So it is a hard question really to answer .. just would have to really think about it before making any decisions...
I Would Lead A Double Life.
I already Work Grave Yard Shift So Hunting would Not Be A Prob
I'd enjoy being a rogue vampire for a bit. What's a "bit" for a vampire?
I'd want sex with humans. Warmer, and very kinky, especially from their vantage point.
Eventually, someone would latch on, a couple would evolve, and perhaps some wide-eyed acolyte who was intellectually stimulating.
I agree the "family" should be kept small. More vampires means more rules.
The first rule would be . . .
I concure. i would for sure stay with my family. but they are so far from this idea that there is no point in telling them anything it would only spark fire in my family. they are def not open minded. at least for this kinda thing. i to would also keep my vampire family small. Just my best friend and maybe a closer than friend...friend, heh, if u understand.
For me I think that I would have to go it alone and find what I need as it comes to me. Finding a family or keeping my family would not be right for me. I feel that we would end up at odds with each other.
I agree, I would go alone until i get a sign or meet another..Then we shall see what life holds.
I'm pretty up there in years and only have two immediate family members. I'm single, never married--no siblings, cousins or children.
I spend most of my time alone and if I were turned, would most likely spend my fledgling years learning, studying and traveling--or doing things I never had the chance to do before.
If it came the time that I would want to settle down, I suppose I would seek out others like myself--perhaps for the sake of having others around--once in a while.
Perhaps, down the line, if I found the right person. I would consider siring someone--but, it would be someone with whom I could, and would want to, spend the rest of my years.
i think my vampire family would be like a coven
the eldest would lead, and basically we'd have rules and guidelines to follow, but we all are pretty on equal ground.
My family is a bunch of vampires! My wife drains my soul, my kids drain my wallet, and my Army family drains my time. If a jump to being immortal would make a difference, it really wouldn't be a big deal. I would hate to leave my kids behind, but they are all teenagers and they would get along alright without me. As for assuming more problems and responsibility, it would be an eternity instead of a life time.
I would like company....but not necessarily a family...I am more suited to being alone
I would not want to head a Vampire Family without first being a part of one.
If I were to look for one to become a part of, I doubt they would all be related, as however vampires are.
If I am allowed to stray into fancy; I would search for an old family with young ones as well. Those that could provide literature and history from whenever and wherever they lived however long ago.
I would hope that there would be something of an oligarchy. If I were to lead, I would want to be above the rest in my family completely, but if I were to submit myself, I'd not want all the control in one individual.
I'd not like for everything to be strict either, sort of a loose brotherhood of individuals just looking for familiarity.
I tend to prefer being alone for the most part so as a vampire I believe I would most likely keep to myself. If I eventually decided I wanted the company of others such as myself I would keep it small and form a close knit bond with the others. What kind of Sire would I be? One that can make quick decisions, protective, aware and diplomatic.
I would have to start my own clan, with myself and one other that I could trust at the head. I would structure it like a meritocracy, with those who prove themselves capable being given more power and responsibilities. However, I would keep the clan from becoming too large too fast. Perhaps 100 members for the first decade and adding a few every year after that.
I would never give up my family my parents my brother and sisters nephew and nieces great nephew and nieces and my cousins that are my friends then my bf and his family no thanks I have then any day thank you
My family would consist of me & my partner only. I'd try & teach myself to refrain from drinking innocent blood & only murder the murderers :)
I belive that most vampires would killt heir human families so that they would have no attachments to the mortal world.
I would leave my family but I would always look after them
I think to a mythical vampire, family = competition. As was mentioned in Carpe Jugulum; vampires live a long time so they're not raising descendants, but opponents.
As for a human family, I'd probably watch from afar, protect from afar, but fake my own death so they wouldn't have to wonder where I'd disappeared to :-)
If I did choose to leave my human family and find a vampire family, I think I would want a small family as to not be exposed near as fast.
As far as inviting any of my family members to join vampirism, I would limit offering that to my younger brothers and a few of my cousins since we've made our own family structure within our actual family. I wouldn't want to invite my children into that life until they were older and made that decision or unless they became deathly ill and becoming a vampire would save their life. I would remain a guardian for them until that time.
I wouldn't construct a traditional family unit with a mother and father since we're all close in age. I happened to be the oldest of our group and seem to have the most influence over all anyhow. I don't imagine anything would change in that line of command.
I would try to keep some kind of relationship with my human family, and if they wanted to turn then ok. But if it got to where they(human family) was put in danger I would just leave. As hard as that would be.
While in my independent rogue status, my primary goal would be to insure my security. In order to accomplish that, acquiring wealth would be primary. This would mean running with humans who have it. Needless to say, I would use whatever means in my power to not just gain access to it, but to gain access to increasing it over a longterm basis.
In terms of Siring, my initial personality requirement would be someone who enjoyed being human, had many interests, someone who doesn't want to die, who doesn't believe in God, yet has a naturally rich imagination and a good sense of humor.
my first get would be someone who understands Discretion and Loyalty. Our lives could be independent. In other words, being lovers might not be a part of the relationship.
this is the wierdest thing i was just talking to someone about this i think if i ever became an acutal vampire i would wait till my children were old enough to make the choice on there own if they wanted to live the life that i lived and pray that they chose to stay with me.. If not i don't think i could handle doing it.. Seeing everyone i love die over and over again..
I would leave. I would not turn any of my family members. My Sire would most definently have to be the forward, yet nuturing type in order to give me guidance. I would not want to start my own coven. I prefer to be with a family of another sort.
I just had a question for you MissSacha.
The most positive thing for a new progeny would be for its Sire to be loving, understanding and nurturing and keep you under his or her wings until they were deemed capable enough to make it on their own .
However, there is always a chance that a Sire will embrace for "the hell of it" or out of selfishness, but not want the responsibilty of a fledgling pulling at his or her apron strings to teach them the ways.
If you were embraced and left on your own, what would you do?
Family is Family human or vampire. If they shun you for who you are don't have to hate them just understand their feelings, and do what you think would be best for either party weather you stay or go.
A. Discretion:
keep the myth alive, downplay the powers, be humble.
oops.
Vampire population must be kept in check. Keep assholes to a minimum --- preferably zero.
i think of course there woul have to be a dominant vampire with one lower and then children vampires
but then there would have to be a set of order
i can just imagine if vampires were able to have children it would be total chaos, just think how bad some kids are today..
After the first two founding vampires, any others would have to be good boy and girl scouts. Rule followers, personalities who like to have order established, not invent it themselves.
Violations: Grounding a vampire would take on new meaning.
I would make sure for awhile i wouldnt have any urges to hurt my human family and decide then.
i would come back after i control the eurge to bite some one and i would not hurt them after the need to drink is gone
I have my family and live as such. I would be honest to say we are Vampires of the worst kind, and we pursue our "blood" incessantly..depending on what ones deffinition of one is.
I would be sure to watch over my family but aside from that I might seek out a few other vampires for companionship, nothing large and no real need for a Sire. I believe that in this case safety is not in numbers.
Precisely the problem, Petal. Large vampire clans could only exist in an alternate universe where they've come out of the closet, which is what one author --- darn what's her name? HBO is basing the True Blood series on her books. Ah, Charlaine Harris.
In a dominantly human society, vampires would need to keep their families small, with strict rules re. feeding, disposal, relations with humans.
Which is why I think turning a member of your human family would lead to trouble. The hierarchies would be turned upside down, if the child ruled the parent or the younger sib sired the older. Or imagine turning your own child: they'd never be able to break free from the parental bonds --- could lead to disturbing consequences, acting out, endangering the whole group with reckless behavior.
I believe that yes the more friends and family you have the better you shall be..Safer at least.. Some might disagree.
i totaly agree because to be safe you have to act like nothing has happened of corse you mite have to do things at different times but you know i use to work the night shift every night
Human Family, I'd fake my death.
To build a new family, it makes me feel happy actually I think it'd be cool even with its disadvantages.
I would try to behave 'normal' as possible, and pretend I have a night job and live in some big city where there is less risk to be asked questions, and if I ever get asked questions about why my children don't go to school I'd say that I tutor them on my own.
Practically I don't think I'd do anything that much different from now except being awake at night and hunt ;)
Well, this is answering for the first question would I leave my family and such. I live with them now as I am, and they still have no idea & I could never hurt them however much they nag me about my chores.
You can be apart an existing vampire family, but then you are bound to them and if you try to break away you are labeled as a renegade or rouge. So what's the point of joining a preexisting family, I'd much rather be a loner in solitary with a mate.
well i rather have some one then be a loner and i would never leave my family no matter what
My vampire family would be small. I wouldn't want to be the head of it, but I would prefer instead to share that position with a partner. I think that we would only create new members of the family after great consideration and discussion. I imagine it would be a comfortable atmosphere. I think that my "children" would come and go at will, my partner and I being the only real stable part of the family.
:) Yes, I have an imagination. lol
If I were to turn someone into a vampire, i would choose wisely. I would want to make the person someone I could stand for the rest of our lives. I would make sure I could love that person. Devotionally.
I honestly don't know... My family is pretty great and would probably not kick me out or anything...one of my sisters would love it and use it for her books...but i would try to make it work...and leave if i have to for their sakes. I wouldn't want anything to happen to them because of me.
Every family has secrets, rules, and expectations. If you were to create a vampire family, how would you structure it?
Would you replicate your human family with a matriarch and patriarch (mom and dad) heading the clan?
Answer: Since a turning is just that, as this thread is implying...Then the matriarch would be the individual that would be loosely termed "sire." After being "transformed", I would have to choose between family members, at least the smarter indivduals with a head on their shoulders aware enough to know better as well as mature enough to take on the task.
What would you aspire to as a Sire? Think about what your ideal Sire (not a vr sire) might be like and describe her/him in terms of personality.
Answer: Very well learned individual in all forms of communication, ediquette, mannerisms, as well as a personality that surpasses the ages. Common sense is a must. A street smart attribute is a must as well living in this day and age. A talent for the arts and entertainment could not hurt.
What would you expect of a mate? Is there an ideal size for the family?
Answer:
If a family needs to be involved, a brood if you will...Then a small one of no more than five individuals at the most. Anymore than this and energies may be drained unintentionally. As for the mate...That depends on my mood really. I am not to concerned with "mating" as it were.
Management not your style?
Perhaps you would prefer to find a preexisting vampire family that you might join. What would you look for?
Answer: *Chuckles* Thankyou, but no...I much rather tend to my duties undisturbed. Too much background noise and influence enchants the mind a bit, sending the individual into somewhat of a confused state to say the least. No, if one were to fall into the querries and companies of others like themselves, then aquantanceship would do just fine and nothing more from the relationship than this...This way, we all learn from one another aside from what we already know by genetics, heredity, as well as natural instinct.
i think like in every family there is always going to be someone, whether it is me or another, who people see as the head of.
whether this person is created due to circumstance or just assumes the position. people will know who is the more assertive person or the one who is more likely in control, a dominant personality so to speak.
recreating what we know is part of who we are. we seek familiarity.
Fictional Vampires:
I already know that my fiance would want to be turned, so I would start my vampire family with her.
I would keep my vampire family small. But we all know that sometimes things can grow faster than we think.
I would form a household and if it does grow, then form a clan for us all to be under.
A Sire is basically a guide/mentor so thats exactly what I would be. I believe in helping a person to help themself so of course I would guide them with whatever they ask. But only if they ask. You dont get anything in this world by having it Given.
There would be rules/guidelines to follow in order to keep things organized. This way we would be able to survive In the mainstream instead of being "mole people" so to speak.
If I was to create mine I would want my Sire to be one who does not need to speak, his taughs would be clear, and a bound would exist to allow others to fonction together, I would want to be his assistant, so that I do not make the final decision.
I would prefer our family to live in a remote location, yet have part of us all over the world.
I would want the name of our family have a meaning, have one Sire, his assitants, then the sub assistants and finaly the family itself without any charges or responsibilty.
I work at night and sleep during the day so i can at least see my family.
The question of a "Vampire Family" is a most intriguing one and a topic of considerable interest and import. Unfortunately as the question here is limited specifically to "...blud-sucking vampires (in the fictional sense)", a true discussion of actual "vampire" families and their composition and family relationships throughout history is not within this topic's purview.
One point worth mentioning here: in Eastern Europe centuries ago there are accounts of entire villages of "vampire" families, including parents and children, that were well known to the local inhabitants. However, as these were communities in possession of the actual "Dark Gift" rather than the later false vilifications of them as "undead" bloodsuckers, further comment would take this thread too far a-field of its stated focus. Nonetheless, the historical accounts do make quite clear that actual families of those later labeled "vampires" do exist... or at least did prior to the slaughters of same that ensued thereafter.
Once a vampire you must leave your family or they become a vamp. You really think your family would let you live-ur evil. Plus other vampires would not allow it,Either killing your family or your w/them. No weak links.
Your sire is the one who makes you so no choice. But I hope he's cute. lick lick
I would embrace both families and that's how it would be. The Sire would just have to deal with it. :)
I feel that if you had a family before then you probably wouldnt hurt them. I would embrace both families and hope for the best.
I would probably not want to be alone, then again it may be for the best.
However if I were to chose to be in a vampire family, it would probably not be headed by a "mom and dad".
The qualities that I would look for in a Sire would undoubtedly be ruthlessness, strength and knowledge.
In order for a family to survive, there would have to be a leader with the ability to make ruthless judgements. Even though this may sound harsh, this combined with the strength to carry out those decisions and the knowledge to make them would be crucial to keep the family alive.... Or undead. Lol.
The knowledge would have to be of the mortal AND vampiric world though - as humans are prey the Sire would owe it to their family to know about the mortal world too.
If i was a vampire i would want my loved ones to be a vampire aswell but if they did not
I would understand
I find it rather ironic that vampires have these societies and covens, when everything about them is inhuman and immense. It's as if they need their covens for support and reassurance that they are living their enternity right...
well said xxanarchyfangsxx --- ruthlessness, strength and knowledge are the key factors for survival and would be absolutely necessary in a Sire. Emotional nuance comes thereafter, but must not cloud the basics.
I would create distance between my family. Whether or not I retain the qualities and conscience of a human- I would not wish to create victims out of my current beloved one.
It is interesting about an eternity to live without a support structure of a family and it is no wonder that so many turn to covens or houses in hopes of fighting the loneliness of the solitaire vampire lifestyle.
Knowing my family, I'd want to distance myself as far as possible.
They are the typical bible-thumping bunch, and even though I tolerate it, I couldn't put up with it; that, and they'd try to kill me.
They already tried to disown me for being a Wiccan.
As for trying to re-create a family, uh-uh. Too much of a headache as they are.
I don't think I'd want to join a coven, right away. I'd want to experience the world a little bit on my own for a few years.
As far as the Sire thing goes, everyone should act as if they already are a Sire.
My own family and I are at odds with each other, sometimes I feel like I'm adopted and they try to force their religion on me so I wouldn't want to hang around them and their holier-than-thou attitudes. I'm more of a whatever goes sort of person. I think I would like to have a family with similar interests and things like that but I would have to have alone time or I would go insane. As for what I would look for in a leader I think they would have to be strong, caring, and a kind of take charge person without being bossy.
i would leave my family out of it and goes far away from them as possable.
i wouldn't start another family, i would try to make it on my own for as long as i could.
I think you would be "stuck" into a clan. Like it or not. And my family would not turn-so nite nite. The leader is the strongest (mind & body) just like in the wild.
i don't think i could turn my family. if they ever found out what i was i'm sure they'd try to destroy me
I know there is no way that I could stay away from my family...if it was a had to case maybe but yet I think there would be a way that we could coninside.
i think i would pick up and leave without telling anyone where i was going so they couldn't follow me
i've had a lot of exsperience with leaving ppl like moving so it wouldn't be to hard for me to just walk away
It would be up to my family if they wanted to or not and as for the rest would play it my ear
umm my family is not good with secrets so i would seperate myself from them and offer the option of being a vampire to only my truest friends and whether they accepted they would be my family now
and i would find a mate, but i mean if you have forever to live your concepts of an ideal mate would change and i wouldnt keep my family big because i would try to keep it a secret
I don't think I would like to set up a vampire family. Then again, vampires are immortal and I might find the need after a while. In all honesty, one or two other vampires would be comfort enough for me. I wouldn't need a vampire family to replace the family I had in life.
i don't think i would need a huge family just a mate and a few others but not many, im not one to be with crowds
I did not abandon my family, however, I did stay away from them in order to protect them. I was unable to control myself at the time and wished for no harm to come to the people who had raised me from infancy. About a month later I did abandon then in order to spend a bit of time with my sire so that I could find my way in the new world that i found myself in. I did not build my own family but found a mate who had a family. Fortunately, his family welcomed my with open arms.
Well since this is all hypothetical and fiction here, of course I would choose what suited me best.
I would go for a family like The Cullens in the Twilight Saga. They are already established and I could learn from them. That also rules out any management positions (I wouldn't want one anyway).
As for any special abilities, I'd like my role within the family to be the ultimate human charmer- sleight of hand, clever wit beyond compare, non-offensive humor to fit any situation, and a photographic recollection rivaled by none.
Of course I'd feed on overpopulated wildlife, and my kind would also use alternate means of feeding as well- like drawing energy from century-old trees. Why not, they're already feeding humans (oxygen).
It's my story, after all :)
Oh yeah... forgot about the mate when I posted.
Of course my mate would fit me like a glove. And love me with a love that put fairytales to all kinds of shame. I mean, why choose a tumultuous relationship when this is me calling the shots, right?
Interesting that you mention centuries old trees, iamduckspit. Just today I was discussing plants that I own which have lived for . . . a very long time. They appear to be truly immortal.
This is a really interesting thread. I'm sorry I missed the first go-round.
If I were to become a fictional vampire, I would most definitely turn my dad, but only if the vampirism would kill what is killing him. I'm not sure that I would necessarily want a "family" (mine turned or otherwise), but I can definitely see having a group of friends to hang out with.
It is interesting to see the various answers in this thread because it gives us a little insight as to what type of vampire fiction the others here are reading. Those who know me are well aware of the fact that if it's vampire fiction and not written by Anne Rice, I'll give it a go. While a lot of vampire fiction portrays the vampire as this loathsome solitary creature, not all of it does.
My personal opinion is that just because I am now required to sleep the day away while avoiding sunlight, garlic, silver, crosses, running water, and sharp wooden stakes (as if one of those to the heart wouldn't also kill a "mortal"!!) does not mean that I am inherantly evil or required to be alone. In my undeath as in my life, I would expect to want to be around those I have something in common with and that something had darn well better be something more than just vampirism!
If i told my parents i was a vampire, they'd probably try to behead me or kill me in some other way before i could even offer to turn them too (not that i would anyway). i think i'd either go solo or just find a mate to be with. i know u can't have 2 many friends, but at the same time the more friends you have, the more friends who could betray you.
The problem I always have is living forever. As tempting as it sounds, I fear that the novelty of it would wear off.
I wouldn't have much of a problem, Most of my family is aleady deceased. Those who are still alive I would leave alone to face their own destiny! There would be new vampires to meet and challenges to face!! Life, in a sense, would go on!
Well you wouldnt have to live forever being as there are plenty of ways for a vampire to end his or her life from what books say. I dont support suicide, but it happens...
There's the crux, I wouldn't want to kill myself. I don't know, maybe living forever wouldn't be so bad, always making new friends, etc.
True, and if my parents where jerks, it would be a lot easier to leave them behind, lol. Another reason to do it for me would be to watch how technology advances. And I could write the most accurate of all history books, lol.
I only have my son and i would bring him with me not change him but when grows up let him decided
I would try to create a strong coven , With a "lord" and its queen , sorta like a family i guess , if my family didnt wanted , iwould have to leave in order not to cause any harm!
