To me, this looks nothing like a raccoon. Here is a picture I took of a raccoon 2 feet from my camera lens on my porch. And then, you can compare the two.

From FOX news:

The "Montauk Monster" may just be a bag of bones by now, but the people who know where it is aren't saying.

The riddle of the beaked beast found on a upscale East Hampton, N.Y., beach in mid-July got even trickier Thursday as various experts weighed in — and its "discoverers" revealed they might have something mysterious of their own planned.

First, "Animal Planet" wildlife expert Jeff Corwin appeared on FOX News Channel to proclaim that we're all suckers.

"What you think is a beak is actually the canine teeth," Corwin told Bill Hemmer and Megyn Kelly. "What we have is an incredibly rare" — dramatic pause — "raccoon."

New York magazine contacted the East Hampton Department of Environmental Analysis, which denied the town's animal-control unit had disposed of the beast.

"It's a raccoon," Margaret Carry-Smyth told the magazine.

Later in the day, the three women who said they'd come across the purplish flotsam a few weeks ago showed off a second snapshot of it on a digital camera.

"It exists," Rachel Goldberg, Courtney Fruin and Jenna Hewitt asserted on local cable channel Plum TV, denying suspicions that they'd Photoshopped a picture of a dead dog.

But pressed by interviewer Nick Leighton about where the animal was now, the semi-glamorous trio suddenly got cagey.

"It decomposed in our friend's back yard," said Goldberg. "It's been since removed ... by friends of ours."

"You're a little shady with the details," observed Leighton. "You planning to write a book about this?"

Goldberg only shrugged and nodded with a faint smile.

"We're hoping to have scientists contact us to find out what it is," she conceded. "It's in a box."

To complicate matters, Alanna Nevitski, who e-mailed the original photo that started the whole brouhaha, told New York magazine the three women were "full of" what dogs and raccoons produce a lot of, and that they had nothing to do with the picture.

The trio's elusive friend apparently popped up on one of FOX News Channel's rivals, where reporter Jeanne Moos played a video she'd gotten from a young surfer-dude type who said the carnivorous corpse was in his back yard.

"We're gonna try to have some experts analyze it," Davis said as his buddies used a stick to hold up what looked like bones with skin still attached. "It's a really cool beast."

Meanwhile, the marketing team for a new energy drink called Venom threw up a blog offering a lifetime supply of their product for anyone who captured a live Montauk Monster.

Finally, a third, better picture of the bloated body showed up on New York Newsday, whose site appeared to have crashed from all the excitement.

It's clear from this angle that the dead animal is, or was, quite male. It's also clear from an examination of the half-rotted head that it looks awfully like that of a — drum roll — dead raccoon.

Here is another page with it on there and an article. Who knows what it is. Dog? Raccoon? The thing that looks different to me, though, is the jaw. Montauk thing has a rounded jaw and face, whereas the raccoon has a pointed face and nose. I dunno. I am not an expert, so....

i have no idea what it is but i think being in the water for sometime might have really messed with its appearance. It probably is just a dog that fell over board on a boat or something simple. I would like to see a autopsy done so we do know what it actually is.

A striking resemblence to a racoon yet the mouth is very undecided yet. looks odd. but many species are yet to be descovered on mother earth. maybe one of those. need to look into this more.

Somewhere in the world wide web, it was posted that the "Montauk Monster" could be a Nutria...but I doubt it since it is not native to the area at all.
http://www.nutria.com/site.php

Don't forget, Plum Island is near there, the USDA research area (I think that's the official title). Just think...We recently moved from near there to Texas. Hehehe, at least all we have here is the Chupacabra. LMAO.

Wow, that most definately does NOT look like a racoon to me. Maybe two different species of animals got together and did the funky tango to make that thing......it will be interesting to see what the scientists come up with after they have a good go at it.

To me it looks sort of like a raccoon that has been dead for a while...but then again the face is to rounded to be a raccoon. Maybe it's some sort of pig and it's just hard to tell what it is because it has started to decompose.

The nose is not a beak of a bird. It is the bone structure of the nose, more of an extended nose. A snout like nose.

The teeth are too forward to be the structure of a boar.

The animal had to be covered with fur as the flesh is still there. The flesh that was on the nose disappears faster than the flesh of a hairy animal. Had it been a hairless animal we would be staring at bones.

It is too big to be a raccoon. More the size of a boar.

What animals are hairy, have a bone rather cartilage for a nose and have only the two fangs on the bottom?

The other thing it could possibly is a science experiment. This does not explain why it is out of the lab.

None knows how long it was in the water. Bloating could cause disaray in the body. Fish were most likely nibbling on it. Who knows the Goverment experiences everyday. They keep secrets only those when we discover things try and find answers to.

Okay that looks like a cross between a pig, raccoon and a smurf (do to the blue skin, but that may be decomposition of the animal. Maybe it escaped from a military test structure who knows. Sorry Corwin, your a douche there is no way in hell that is a raccoon.

It has to be some animal either in some sort of decomposition or its been doctored a bit. Reminds me of the monkey hoax where some folks passed off a shaved monkey as an alien.

racoon is no where near that thing. And i am 100% positive its a mutation from some kind of animal if we could find more of them we could find out what mutation it is cause i am sure it had to have breeded with something and is around underwater cause if you look at its skin you can see it was under water. I only wonder what mutated it and what is was befor then cause it has features from a few animals.

Tapirs (pronounced /ˈteɪpɚ/, as in "taper", as "ta-pier") are large browsing mammals, roughly pig-like in shape, with short, prehensile snouts. They inhabit jungle and forest regions of South America, Central America, and Southeast Asia. All four species of tapir are classified as endangered or vulnerable. Their closest relatives are the other odd-toed ungulates, including horses and rhinoceroses.

Honestly to me I don't think it's an animal at all. In the first picture it's legs and torso look very human and so does the arm position in the second picture.

Don't care what Fox says me thinks it's just a guy in some make-up. Bones can actually be faked and/or manipulated in such a way as to make them hard to identify or seem "un-natural."

If only it was as simple as that. It seems, gathering D.N.A. (if it has not already been done) will be impossible, unless the body is found.......

"The latest, according to the East Hampton Star: The monster has been stolen from the backyard of Eric Olsen, a Montauk real estate agent who said he had taken the corpse from Ditch Plains Beach, where it was "discovered" July 12."

I have to agree with CrimsonScarab. I just watched the episode of Monster Quest he referred to and believe DNA testing would be a grand idea.

Since the nose is rounded - it really doesn't look like a raccoon to me. I would also rule out pig - since it does not have hoofs, but clawed feet.

I work as a firefighter in SF and we routinely do recoveries in the bay here. It's pretty amazing what time in the water does to a corpse.

People don't even look human after a few days.

The soft flesh and cartilage around the nose and mouth goes pretty quickly. Not to mention crabs and seabirds would have started eating the rotted flesh away.

Compare the teeth and exposed upper and lower jaws with this skull.

Binturong? I dunno. That looks more like the raccoon theory. And how does it end up on our Eastern shore in reasonably good shape? ;)

"Its natural habitat is in trees of forest canopy in rainforest of Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.[1]"

Howcome everyone keeps saying boar when boar heads look nothing like the head on that thing? Boar are shaped like so....

Firstly let me point out that that creature is nothing short of f*cking disgusting. It doesn't, in my opinion, resemble a raccoon either. I couldn't say what it is but looking at those pictures is making me feel ill, lol.

The head of that thing looks like a turtle. I just can't make out any other animal in that...thing.

I keep looking to see if there's a possibility that the thing is something that was 'put together' but I just can't tell.

The size looks too big for coon. My guess is boar as well although in the top picture something about the feet look almost human i know that sounds stupid.
Maybe it is one of those mutant mixtures of two different species.
Jamie did you capture the coon for me to have for a pet? :P

From what i have read in the past they are very curious animals it would be nice to see one that close up.
I guess they are better off in the wild but would be nice to have a pet of one too i think sometimes.
I don't got enough pets. :)

That thing gives me the creeps >.>;;
Things like that always do!
Well it appears rather unnatural to me because of the disproportionate head, let alone the beak (Yes, I'm rather certain that it is a beak - no set of canines looks like that!).
Gahhh, its creepy!

Not a beak...the soft tissue on its face is missing...the lips...nose and skin around them...all you see is the bone.

It does seem to have a beak. I have stared at the picture for a good while now and it isn't the same bone structure you would see in a boar or a racoon.

Also, doesn't it seem odd that all these supposedly mythical animals are coming into light now?

LOL, well it has been a while since I posted. I didn't really take a good look at all the pictures.

I never stated I saw the beak before no reason to jump down my throat about it.

I just disagree with everyone saying it is a normal snout of an animal.

I decided to check and see if there were any legitimate updates. To my surprise *coughs* there is now a website up dedicated to the Montauk Monster and more about a possible upcoming movie.

Montauk-Monster

Was the Montauk Monster Viral Marketing For Splinterheads Movie?

If what is said is true, it's a shame to see what routes people take for the sake of a movie promotion. It's like the Boy Who Cried Wolf.......

With the divisive behavior of these people using ploys like this, for sake of getting attention and making money, the day will come when something real does come along, and, tired of being played, we might just miss out.

I am going to have to agree with morbidcuriousity on this one saying that it resembles a turtle without the shell...sea turtles can get pretty big as well as snapping turtles but I don't think you find snapping turtles around the ocean.

Who knows what it is and quite possibly someone just playing tricks to get a kick out of the chaos they are causing due to it.

It would take many generations and many altered genes to produce a bird/canine cross, which is what the first cadaver looked like. Now, if someone were experimenting to speed the process along, that might make it go faster.

What is the plant nearby involved in?

hehe this is great
i love people's reactions and speculations on what it could be
as i saw stated above, decomposing bodies look a lot different than the original

i reserve judgment, i'm no animal expert and the photographs aren't exactly taken in a way that i'd be able to identify it
Jeff Corwin thinks it's a raccoon or dog that has decomposed a little and Darren Naish agrees with the racoon theory...
since i've not had the.. privilege.. to be up close in personal with many deceased and decaying animals, i am more apt to go along with the assessment of people better qualified than i.

Darren Naish's blog has some interesting points:
http://scienceblogs.com/tetrapodzoology/2008/08/the_montauk_monster.php

he also has an entry about the newer animal carcass as well
