I have always been fascinated by fairies. I wonder if they ever truly existed or if they may still, what do you think they really were? Were they kind or were they wicked? I'd really like to hear everyone's thoughts on the subject.
I always thought fairies were nice, until I saw the movie Labyrinth of David Bowie when I saw for the first time, wicked fairies who bite fingers and are not nice at all.
I always consider fairies to be the ones who help little girls go to bed and fall asleep, who help believe in prince charming and in the Knight in shining armor, along with the tooth fairies who give money for teeth.
Yeah, call me crazy or stupid but I grew up with tinkerbell and thumbellina So I kinda thought of them as magic fireflies!
I'm from Ireland and we have stories about fairies for years and years. I believe in them and all my family does becasue of all the things that have happened.
There are both good faries and bad ones just like people in the Irish myths and legends. They help you yet they can curse you as well.
My grandmother always told me to walk with bread crumbs in my pockets so if a bad fairy came near to offer it the bread (No salt) then it will make then/it like you and not bother you.
Also some myths say that some fairies take babies if the windows aren't shut and steal them to the underground kingdoms. So you leave bread on the out side window sill and salt against the glass, they will take the bread and not the baby.
Those are a few myths and legends from my childhood. Anyways, Hope it helps.
Yeah, I grew up with Tinkerbell, Thumbelina, Tom Thumb, etc.
I've head that fairies were once angels like muses, and they were thrown out of heaven during the great war, because they either took satan's side or were neutral.
And some help humans like devas and elementals to gain redemption when the rapture comes.
Others like imps and such still despise humans, and would rather burn when the time comes.
Try this site, lots of definitions of a variety of faeries and their origins.

I grew up with the irish believes as well. My mother gave me a detailed book my grandmother wrote about her own experiences with faries. They let me keep it till i was 10 then my grandmother wanted it back so she could give it to her great grand children too.
Personally, I so don't care who thinks i'm bonkers. I've seen them and played with them. I even have trouble with some of the more miscevious fey who like to pilfer my stuff.
being Irish , welsh and Scottish I differently believe in Fairies . I make Fairy houses for them and try to make sure that they have nice places to live learning how to make furniture out of sticks for them I think if you give them a environment to stay in and honor them they will thank you and honor you.
Another example of unfriendly fairies was in the Torchwood episode, Small Worlds. They travel time seeking out children they call, chosen ones. They kill to protect them and then transform them into one of their own. According to their mythology, all fairies were once human children. While maintaining a bit of child-like personality, they are wicked, sadistic tricksters. If anyone threatens to interfere with the transformation, the fairies have power over the elements which they can use to cause terrible - even global devastation. They exist in another earthly time and dimension, so the fate of the world in a single period of time matters very little to them. It was said that they may be part, Mara (where the word 'nightmare' comes from). Mara is the German name for wraiths who kill people in their sleep by driving the air from them. This was the first episode of Torchwood in which the team had no choice but to give up. The fairies were far too powerful to be defeated.
These snapshots below show a close-up of a Torchwood universe fairy, one of them grown to human height which they do when about to attack, 3 of them perched in a tree, their chosen one, the famous 5th of the Cottingley fairy photos which many believe to be real, and a close-up of the photo showing the chosen one as a fairy. The kicker was that the episode took place in the present. The photo is over 100 years old.

I managed to find the full episode on YouTube in 5 parts:

I do not believe in them, but I do believe in spirits.
Weird shit happens in wild places, especially over ley lines, and nodes. I do, however, like stories about them, especially trolls, goblins, and redcap leperchauns (ie unseelie fae.)
I've always wanted to go looking for them in Scandanavia... it's on my todo list.
I love some of the lores of the Faries. When you have a garden leave a little untended so the faries can work in it.
I have little flowered cups I put in my Flower pots outside so the faries can have tea parties as I put honey and milk in the little cups.
Yes the milk and honey is gone.
I have a book called fairy houses by Barry and Tracy Kane.
The pictures are breath-taking.
Well I don't know , it's hard to think of them as being real but me and my wife love stories of them.
My cousin and I saw them when we where children. I know three people who have seen them too. I think they are a race of pygmy people and not really supernatural. I think they would like my garden.
Love the stories and love to really beileve they are real but not sure in full honesty.
I believe in them and a really good story supposed to be true was aired on T.V. I also read the book of the actual accounts.
Fairy Tale: A True Story (1997)
Based on factual accounts, this is the story of two young girls that, somehow, have the ability to take pictures of winged beings... which certainly causes quite a stir throughout England during the time of the first World War. Everyone, except the girls who think it's quite normal, are excited about this "photographic proof" that fairies exist... even the great Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Harry Houdini pay the girls a visit.
Well I believe that faeries are real. I'm part Irish and Scottish and theres's tales about faeries there.
Cool Thread! I love fairies! There are both good and evil ones!
My entire living room & Dinning room are displayed in them!
Huge cross stitch works of them.
I often wondered if people miss took them of dragonflies or even hummingbirds.
And I did some reseach into them and had a post in my Coven, because the Goddess Isis is deemed their Golden Winged God.
Yes, Scotland has a gateway into a forest that is believed to be still inhabited by them. I'll see if I can retrieve that info for you.
I vey much love fairies!!
I consider them to be both good and bad, basing much of my beliefs up on old irish and scottish folklore.
and i believe they do exist. people see them (like these people), and i still like to believe that those girls got proof of them on camera (cottingley fairies).
I grew up on fairy tales as well, and it was part of what helped me to look beyond the surface of the ordinary to try to find the interesting and unique. I don't believe in the existence tiny winged humanoid creatures, but quite frequently there was something that did exist that started or perpetuated the myth. Maybe dragonflies were the origins - dragonflies are fascinating to watch. So are butterflies. Adding a human body would be a natural wish-fulfillment attempt. I like winged things - gryphons, winged cats, winged mice, angels. These things resonate.
As for the bad fairies, changelings made good explanations for babies that cried for hours on end and grew up as horrid children. It also explained how you could put something down for a minute, come back, and what you put down would be gone.
What growing up with stories about fairies did for me was to make me think that the world would be a pretty cool place if they (the good ones) did exist. So now I look for the stuff that does exist that makes the world a pretty cool place. If all a person looks for is more reasons to be depressed, one can find that in abundance. One tends to find what one is looking for.
While I don't believe in fairies existence in the world of reality (and please accept my respect to those who do), I do very much believe in the importance of their existence in the world of imagination.
SeraphimAurora, that was a briliant post. Simple without be simplistic. And you are right. Fairies and all of the mythical creatures referred to in another thread are much more important for the role they play in our imaginations than they could ever be if proven to be real.
If real they would become mundane and ordinary but as objects of imagination and myth they remain timeless and wonderful.
Probably a little of both. There were kind fairies and wicked ones.
It like the idea also, but do not believe in them. I also hate Tinkerbell.
Faires, Sprites both good and evil ones.
Just because I've never seen a baby pigion doesn't mean they don't exhist, they do.
so there fore I think the possibility is there as are other creatures.
Believe me, they're not in my garden!!
Why don't they mow my lawn then??
honestly, I think they would rather let your lawn grow into a forest than "mow" it down... They are wild things.
I believe that faeries do exist. Just because you can't see them doesn't mean they aren't there. They could be that little thing then you see in the corner of your eye and then is suddenly gone. There could be a slight movement of a branch or bush when the breeze isn't strong enough to do so. I may or may not ever see one, but I still believe in them.
Pookas are my favorite. Check here in our articles section for a list of fairies and descriptions, and a clip from the best Pooka movie ever:
Fairy and Demonlore
Honestly, I think fairies existed in the olden times.. but they have "evolved" I heard? God knows into what, though..
Having stated my belief, I despise fairies. *sighz*
They are mischievous, evil, and wicked to say the least.. Or that's the impression I get from them..
Yeap..
*smilez*
Actually I always liked Tinkerbell, but then I have a thing for short women with wings.
The girls who took the pictures of the fairies, made a documentary in their 60's-70's, saying all those pictures are fake, and showed how they did it.
But they said even though they faked the pictures, that their stories and personal accounts were true.
First off, fay are very real, to deal with fay is to deal with the oldest magic arround bc each fay holde a elament, thus they hold the world of magic within there hands.
Pookas sound cool!
Like Pixies, which are frightfully devilsh and mischeivous!
The existence of Fairies only exist in the imagination of little kids, That imagination come from stories told by adults to make them go to sleep fast..
i think it would be cool if they r real but i dont see any evidence of existence that is fact only movies and books, the only question i have is were did the idea come from to make up the first movie/book
ah, now there's a good question, where did faireies, sprites and Pixies originate from?
Goes back as far as Ancient Egypt, the wings of Isis are golden on Idol's believed to be derived from the gift of faieres.
But who really knows?
I paganism, fairies are known as elemental spirits, I think they are spirits of nature. The gnomes are elemental spirits of Earth, which is the spirits of nature. They 4 elemental spirits rule over the 4 elements in the practice of magick.
Fairies are nature spirits, and fairies are also known as sylphs which are the spirits of Air. If you want more information look up sylphs, because its another name for fairies, the spirits of Air.
i most definitely believe in them have seen too many things not too, however as to whether they are good or bad well that entirely depends on the individual fairy like all creatures there are both good and bad, and i think it also depends on the person they are interacting with, to one they might seem good and to another they my seem bad it's all relative, much like everything in this world.
Well I know my granddaughter loves fairies lOl I have always thought they could be nice or mean just depended on who they were around LOl I like to think that they may exist soemwhere or at some time in history.
I was not brought up in a culture that has fairies as myths, but I was brought up in the mid 80's and early 90's where children were told fairy tales and were taught to use their imagination.
So it would be cool if good faires existed!
Even though I doubt so :(
You never read my story - so you don't know about the fairies I was taught about.
They are very much like anyone else..
and can be very devious if necessary..
the point most people overlook, is that they are not tiny unless they need to be.
I have witnessed some encounters around mushroom rings but i have yet to confirm if the enties were fairies.
.. facets of the Earth Mother given form, is what I think.
I think everything depends on what type of fairy you were talking about and whether or not they liked others. If you were trespassing some might do what they could to get rid of you. Others might trespass themselves just to help or for mischief.
i do believe in most folklore, fairies are generally described as mischievous which means they are neutral party. they can either be good or bad.
Fairies must exist or we would not be talking about them in this thread.... ^_^ They hide during the day and come out at dusk. There is good and evil with all things and I suppose even in the fairy world.
i do not beleave faries excist they are mythological creatures created by someones dreams or dreative imginations wich only excist in movies and fairy tails
I don't believe in fairies. But I believe in the need for us to believe in them. Life would be so boring without them.
When talking about fairies that can mean many things but most think of the tiny winged creatures or Shakespeare's version such as Titania and Oberon. My favorite thing ever written in fiction about fairies is from the play Peter Pan by Barrie:
"When the first baby laughed for the first time, the laugh broke into a thousand pieces and they all went skipping about, and that was the beginning of fairies."
I have a long article in another ID that I wrote about the fairy from another perspective. I will come back in another name and give a link and you can read it if you are interested. As for the angel thing it was a story about the neutral angels. They were cast out by Michael because they wouldn't take sides and some took human form and others became fae, so the tale goes. I am sure there are other versions as well.
The older stories of them always had them as both good and evil, just like humans. Some were friendly toward humans but more of the stories made them out to be tricksters that loved messing with humans the most.
I always enjoyed the tale of being able to step through a fairy circle and into the land of fairy itself but if a human did and stayed too long they would never be able to leave again.
The modern version of Tinkerbell and such are cute and kid friendly but don't even come close to the truth, I think.
Mollidew, it had been so many years that I had forgotten that line. I think it expresses the magic of fairies better than anything else I have read.
i believe in faires and always have . I swear when i had the german measles at 8 and almost died they were there to protect me. my profile is full of them as you can see.
It just depends on the person. Someone like me may believe in fairies but only because they believe in everything else and don't want to leave anyone behind. Personally I think that at one time perhaps a lot of things existed to be the base on our myths and legends today. But it's hard to really prove it.
I believe the medieval fairy may have been a way to discredit other lore about the fairy folk and their existence. Many people love the tiny fairy and all of its offshoots. I consider this type more like an elemental spirit or deva. There is a lot of folklore about them, and they have fascinated many cultures. Some have them divided into good fairies and bad fairies such as in Scotland where they belong to courts. One article cannot begin to cover all that has been written about them including famous sightings, one in particular that involved Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Some were proven to be faked and others are still open for interpretation.
My article on fairies can be read here but it only breaks the surface of all the material that has been written about them (the second article down):
Fairies
i've been told by friends they do and that they are the size of midgets but proportional
I have spoken to fairies and other mystical beings since I was a child. It takes a certain alteration of vision and senses to reach them, and then they don't always notice you, but they definitely exist.
There is a book I read when I was a teenager that was fairly good at explaining the ability called Fairie magick. I have yet to meet anyone else who can touch the fairy realm, but then again most people don't advertise these things.
I am usually pretty hush hush about it too, but hey, if anyone would understand it is yall.
I wish I could believe they exist, but in my opinion they are just folklore. They're really cool though, no matter if they are fictitious.
