iv been trying to do reasch on amulets and talismans and have found a couple of groups and am wondering are there more then what i have found here is what i have so far

The form of the talisman is not important as long as the person believes in it and puts his faith in it. The intent the talisman is aimed towards is the most important thing. I could take a piece of plastic shaped like a fingernail, and if I believed in it and strengthened it with the power of my intent it would become my talisman.

I have heard that only certain things can be talismans, but then I have also heard that any thing can be as long as you have followed some sort of ritual or spell. I have wanted to know more on the subject because most of the stuff that I have heard kind of contradicts the other stuff. lol

Some people also refer to such things as dutch courage.....give someone a stone or whatever and tell them it is special for whatever reason, and hey presto, they don't fear going to the dentist so much lol

A police badge is considered a symbol of authority. That is because people believe the person(s) carrying the badge have authority.

pentagrams make good talismans, at least for the Wiccan/Pagan faiths. If you are Christian, go for a cross.

As Masque said it isn't the taliman or amulet giving you any kind of heightened ablities. It is what you put into it. Thought, faith, and emotion

thoughts and faith i agree are important but even more important when believing in such items is taking all doubts and casting them to the side and making such an object very personal by the senses mentally as well as spiritually.

I have several talismans myself, depends on the situation but I always carry at least one..crystals really do work for me, especially if worn or carried next to the flesh.

Amulets were used as a protection by the Pagans who did not believe in Christianity, so I doubt very much if an amulet would of been a cross.

I agree with the general statements here.. Talismans can be anything.. Certain gods are even represented simply by coins..

pretty much anything can be a talisman, or an amulet, it all depends on your beleifs and on your inner energy that you use and transmit to the amulet or talisman that will amplify it for you.

I thnk anything can have power, a pebble or a shell off the beach. It is you who can infuse it with power, you can even have a special ritual to make it more powerful in your mind.

i do believe that concecrating or even dedicating certian talismans can help and add energy to the object as well.

I use different things for different reasons. I have a few things that are special to me for one reason or another and they have become my talismans. I have a heart shaped crystal, a medium sized regular crystal and a coin to mention a few. You must decide what you are drawn to, what feels magikal to you or what you take comfort in, because it is true what everyone has said... You Must Believe.

i am not going to agree or diagree with other folks but i AM a practicing witch and do not use fingernails,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,thats silly,,,,,,,i do use stones as a centering object,,,,,,and candles 4 impressing and sending a focused power to yield that spirit,,,,however each 2 their own

i like to have alot of different kinds of stones and candle around the house. it help you feel safe and comfortable.

But talismans can also be gifted or bought in some cultures (voodoo for example) and not everyone who claims that a talisman worked for them initially believed that it would. SO was the power inherently in the item?...was the item merely a focal point for a power that the maker put in it?...Did the unconscious mind simply believe where the conscious did not?

I used to own a powerful talisman which protected me from illness. It was a ankh necklace made of a very rare crystal which repelled unwanted energies. One night after an encounter with something you may not believe, it vanished from my wall where it hung when I was asleep. i know of many that believe in good luck charms and wear them and i feel that those as well would be considered talismans.

Anything can be used as a talisman, or an amulet. Preferably something natural, or symbolic of what you belive.

I always use my pentacle as a talisman. It seems to help me center my emotions and channal my power. It also protects me.

I agree with the vast majority of responses here. Anything can be a talisman as long as you believe in it. Ive had a few and the one that worked best for me was a shirt. My personal belief is that all you have to do is believe.

Amulets derive power from words, symbols, and shapes, they are what is hidden on your person, allowing yourself to know it is present.

Talisman however is worn in the open, as the figure of your belief, such as a pentacle, cross, ankh. Could be bones, feathers, stones, etc...to achieve a purpose. The power is strengthed by those who see it, and know it has purpose.

The amulet has power because of confidence in it from the mage who created it. However, its power is usually lost when viewed by others.

I believe in amulets and talismans of stones, candles and some made ones of paper with symbols writen on them. They've worked for me.

Any magickal object is more powerful when made by the person who is intended to benefit from it. Although it would not necessarily be unethical to make an talisman for a friend or relative you must be sure their intent agrees with your ethics, since the result — good or bad — will be your responsibility.

Concentrate on the intended purpose while working on your magickal object then charge it with energy.

I have a dragon charm for protection which has an amethyst ball which can also be for protection. When my daughter was born they made me remove all jewelry... it was the first time in over 3 years I hadn't worn it and it was a very complicated birth.

Crystals can be used as talismans. You may also make your own. There is a large variety of talismans out there. You may also purchase one of pewter, which can be found in almost any Metaphysical store. Some are made of wood, sanded and painted. You can also make them out of parchment paper, which is a popular paper for The Book of Shadows.

I have a sigil of solomon as well as 2 pents that I carry around with other items in my gri-gri bag these items help keep me safe because of the energy that I have charged them with not because they are protection symbols... it's like a lock on a door... a deadbolt will keep people out, but only if you use it properly

The amulet that I consider to be most powerful is the Crescent Moon amulet. Reason being that it reminds me of how there is always light even in the dark.

I believe that Dream Catchers and Buddha statues fall into the talisman category as well.

I wear a tripple goddess symbol with a moon stone and a penticle on it. When teaching so students dont see my penticle I wear a dragon amulet.

A Talisman is made of metal and an Amulet is made of stone or crystal. Those are your only main differences it matters not where you wear or keep these items.

As for different effects with different materials, what you and EVERY ONE starting out needs are crystals, stones, amulets, a pendulum and rings. I know that many of the users here are reincarnations of someone who lived in 1436b.c. and made the first ever magic spell, or are the vessel used to house a particular god (note the fact that I use the term god and do not include goddess... god is a neutral term deriving from the word Deus which is the oldest known form of said word) or if you are the one crazy little fellow who says all the stars in the sky rest in your spleen during the day... everyone needs these tools essentially as well as others... Almost anything can be a talisman...but they are most commonly a jewel, coin, stone, or charms of the sort.

I think they've all summed it up pretty well. A talisman can be anything you believe in; A lucky rabbit's foot, your lucky coin, your security blanket even. I think alot of people try to look for something that looks old and magical.

Any item passed down through a family I think has symbolic meaning therefore giving it power. But that's just an opinion.

ithis is simiar to this subject but i know not to post it on its own. i have a very old ring set with a large ruby. i want to make a talisman out of it but i dont really know how to go about it any advice

I don't know much about magicks and the like but you should probably go about a cleansing ritual of sorts to weed out any negative emotions, if there are any.

In Santeria we have the beads which represent the different dieties.

Santeria is an earth religion a pre-Christian religion. African slaves who were brought to the Caribbean from Yoruba(northwest Nigeria) Also brought this religion which became part of Puerto Rican culture. African slaves had to deal with the Christian slave owners who not only wanted to dominate them.. But also feared this religion and looked at it as a demonic primitive religion that need to be ended. The slave owners not only changed what people must worship but also what and how they would dress and speak.

In this time anyone caught in the worship of native gods would be punished and many times by death, Africans and the native Tainos. In order to keep the religion and life, The slaves became "Christianized" at least to the slave owners. The slaves took each African god(Orisha) and renamed them after the saints. Chango the god of thunder became Santa Barbara and they kept the religion in secret. Even today the religion is kept in secret since there is still people who see it as devil worship when it's not.

There are hundreds of gods in Africa but within Santeria, many people worship 7 main Orishas. Also represents the planets: Mars, Venus, Mercury, Saturn, Jupiter, Neptune,Uranus plus the Sun & Moon. Each has his or her own colors, numbers, foods, herbs, so on. Jesus would be Olodumare or Olofin, Olorun. He would have no sacrifices, his day is Thursday and his color is all combined.

Sacrifices is a part of Santeria, Animal as well as foods and cafe...money Chances are that within your home or relative's home, You have seen the 7 day glass candles in different colors and with pictures Of the saints. Maybe a cup with old coffee and a dish full of change. Or you light candles for your dead family since we as Puerto Ricans have What is called "ancestor worship" which can be found in the African & Taino culture. We pray to our dead for help and guidance and protection. This is Santeria and Taino beliefs and not Christian beliefs.

When an animal is to be sacrificed, Its done by a priest or Babalu only. We can have altars and offer food, money, coffee, but we are not to kill an animal. Animals are used only in major situations, Such as ones life is in danger or badly cursed. With all religions, there is good and bad people.. This does not make the religion itself bad but the people who use it for harm.

Santeria isn't just about magic or voodoo, These people are the people we go to when we are sick. They know what herbs gives what effects, This is something in the African & Taino culture as well. To the church it is looked at as bad and even evil. Within the church, There is no herbs and only Jesus is the one you pray to and not the Virgin or Lazarus.

Every Puerto Rican and Latin knows to pray to Lazarus is to pray for money. This is not a Christian or Catholic belief. So in many ways we still keep our pre-Christian beliefs with us without knowing where we get them from. The Virgin brings miracles...San Jose protects her and all Virgins St. Christopher protects while we travel.

Ebos
This is another word for spells with sacrifices. People use ebos in love, marriage, money, healings and yes..to harm or hurt others.

Initiation
People who practice Santeria are to go through an initiation period. For this you would go to a Babalu who would perform this for you. You become a child and an Orisha is chosen for you who protects you. You will learn all the secrets of the particular Orisha. The Babalu will consult the Orishas through the use of cowry shells. There will be an animal sacrifice for this ritual and it's not cheap. You'll be given a "Godfather" and "Godmother" who are people within the Santeria community, They will guide and instruct you as to your rituals and be there for you in time of need.

Look for books by Migene Gonzales-Wipper, she has many Santeria books As well as a Boricua herself.

I think that maybe you need a little more faith in general. Anything can hold power or meaning. It's all up to you. You decide. It's in your faith.

i think anything could be used as a talieman you have just beleive in it so much that maybe just maybe it could happen if believe in deeply in it.

From what I understand, anything can be used as a talisman as long as the proper spell is cast upon the object to strengthen the object for such said purpose. It doesn't matter what shape, color, or design the object is, just so long as it is "activated" and strengthened with the same spell as what the object is going to be used to protect or enhance. Any object cam be embued with a spell and thus rendered an amulet or talisman. Or is this asking about talismans that are proof protection against vampires? cause that is sort of passe'..... *shrug*

A lot of people carry rabbits foot, four leafed clovers and other things as amulets and talismans, so i think anything could be used for an amulet or talisman...

Anything can be used.. whatever calls/speaks to you and you give it the intentions of power... Your power object woudl be your talisman/amulet.
I use a pentagram with wolf's head with a dagger on one side and healing hand on the other. Often I wear a pouch of crystals.... When i go to do healings ftf I wear my leather pouch with shaman's balls ( moqui balls)

I do tend to agree with most here but I would like to point out one small thing.. not ALL amulets are made of metal.. or wood or stone. Yes CemetaryClown I have seen it said for some belief systems this is true.. but for others.. say oohh like most of the Native Americans for example they are not always so. And yes I do know of what I speak my personal amulet has stone.. and leather and other things but not a tiny piece of metal.

These things often are thing you simple feel "right" having close to you. The thoughts you direct at it is what charges it so to speak... be they good or evil thoughts.

Now I have my personal one that I made... but I have 3 that were made for me by others. They work for their purpose as well as the one I made... because the intent and energy was invested in them.

i have been given them before but havent made one myself yet but you can use crystals or symbols to make them and then bless them.The one that was given to me was a protection one but unfortuntly it got losed when i moved it was a tiger's eye

I have several items that I belive hold positive energy for. I try to have at least one of these items with me at all times. There are some things that I would not do without a specific item with me. I have a string of beeds that are very old and have been carried by mulitple generations of powerfull people. I believe that they do have power.

An amulet can be anything, that you believe in. I assume that the same is true with talismans, but I am not sure.

Ive always used a crystal had a Wiccan friend of mine put a Spell of protection on it and have used that but hell i lost it and so need a new one
