Does anyone know any vampire type of species under water? Anything under seas that resembles a vampire even a little?

Most of the sea and the life in it is still mostly unmapped, so I was wondering if there is a possibility of any vampire life under water.

Vampire Fish discovered in the Amazon
Tina Butler, mongabay.com
May 19, 2005

A new species, dubbed the ‘vampire fish,’ was recently discovered in the Araguaia River of the Amazon Basin. The origin of the ominous title is the species’ form of feeding. The yet unnamed fish is a parasitic species, that lives off the blood of its hosts. The ‘vampire fish’ is a close, but smaller relative of the candiru, a similarly parasitic, blood-sucking species of catfish found in the same region.

The candiru is notorious in the Amazon for its unpleasant parasitic practices. This diminutive catfish burrows into body orifices, securing itself to its host with spines along its sides and drinking its blood. These fish detect their prey by water streams coming from other fishes’ gills, or in the case of humans, urine streams. The new fish species is transparent and only 25 millimeters long. Scientists believe it is likely to feed off of larger fish by swimming into their gill slits. It is too early to determine whether or not the fish targets hosts as large as humans.

The species was discovered in the murky depths of the bottom of the Amazon River during the filming of a BBC series entitled “Amazon Abyss,” along with three other fish species. For the program, an international team of divers and scientists set out to record life at the deepest reaches of the river. The Amazon River is incredibly vast--wider and deeper in some places than the English Channel. The area where the ‘vampire fish’ was discovered comprises a series of great scars in the river bed that are more the 300 feet deep in places. Scientists have only begun to explore these mysterious areas but are already uncovering numerous oddities.

The BBC expedition was launched in conjunction with the University of Sao Paulo and was the first to film this habitat. Of the four species discovered by the team, there is a new species of ‘land-living’ fish and a catfish that is the only fish in the world known to eat wood. The BBC is currently holding an interactive vote for the scientific name of the ‘vampire fish.’ The choices are Paracanthopoma dracula, Paracanthopoma irritans, Paracanthopoma minuta, Paracanthopoma nosferatu and Paracanthopoma vampyra, three of which are word plays on the blood-sucking habits of the species. The results of the vote will be revealed on the BBC website.

Virtually any unmapped territory has enless possibilities to who it's inhabitants are. Maybe there is a actual mermaid or underwater sanctuary of sorts. That would be meat to think of a aquatic vampire, the movie would be cool also.

There is a difference between a meat eating amphibian and a blood sucking one. People and many other land animals and air animals eat meat too..that doesn't make them vampires.

Leeches is a VERY good resemblance of a vampire though. =)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The sea lamprey's oval mouth contains concentric rings of sharp teeth, with a bony, rasping tongue used to bore into its host. Source: US EPA Great Lakes National Program Office. The sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) is a parasitic lamprey found on the Atlantic coasts of Europe and North America, in the western Mediterranean Sea, and in the Great Lakes. It is brown or gray on its back and white or gray on the underside and can grow to be up to 90 cm (35.5 in) long. They prey on a wide variety of fish by attaching themselves with their suction-cup like mouths to the skin of a fish and rasping away tissue with its sharp probing tongue and teeth. Secretions in the lamprey's mouth prevent the victim's blood from clotting. Victims typically die from blood loss or infection.

Correction to someone's earlier post regarding the Slavic rusalki (plural of rusalka):

The rusalka is the ghost of a drowned girl, who usually lives in rivers, rarely in lakes. She lures young men (and rarely women) and children to their deaths by appearing on land and then walking into the river, where the vodyanoi (a demon who lives in the river) whom she serves attacks and kills them. If they are lucky, they become rusalki; if not, then they are forever dead.

Basically she's the bait in a trap, not the vampiric one herself.

The Rus have a huge variety of fairy tales and mythology, and the upir is as close as they get to vampires of any type. I haven't come across any more in my study of Russian paganism, mythology, and fairy tales (which are often mythologically based), but I'll let you know if I find more.

Description—
The hag, like the lamprey, lacks paired fins and fin rays. Its skeleton is wholly cartilaginous, without bones, its mouth is jawless; and its skin is scaleless. It is easily recognized by its eel-like form; by its single finfold (a fold of skin, not a true fin) running right around the tail and forward on the lower surface of the body with no division into dorsal, caudal, and anal fins; by the single gill pore on each side, just forward of the origin of the ventral finfold; by its lipless mouth, star-shaped in outline when closed; by the single nasal aperture at the tip of the snout; by its peculiar barbels or "tentacles," two flanking the mouth on either side and four surrounding the nostril; and by the evertible tongue studded with rows of horny rasplike "teeth." We might also mention the series of mucous sacs on either side of the abdomen, and point out that the dorsal finfold originates about two-thirds of the distance back from snout toward tip of tail, and the ventral fin fold one-third the way back, with the vent piercing it.

Oh! I almost forgot about this little guy I had meant to tell you..the Candiru .He is a true vampire in that he feeds on blood and is a relative of the newly discovered Vampire fish.He is feared because he has an affinity for orfices where he swims into and lodges himself and feeds away.Ever hear of "Dont pee in the water."? Well with this guy its true, they are attrracted to Ammonia and other compounds in urine. The rivers where they live are normally clouded with mud/silt and/or Tanin,so they cant see to well..and you cant see them either because they are transparent.

There are those who believe in what are called "Vampire Mermaids". Half-vampire and half-fish... they are said to feed on the blood of fish, but occasionally have taken the life of many a sailor.

How about the remora that attaches itself to sharks and, I believe, with whales.. it is like a symbiotic relationship for the two species.

I do not quite know if there are marine vampires but i do know back in the days of Greek myth they had sirens whom use to make men crash there boats on the reef and kill themselves but i don't know if it was to eat them or not. I am sure in my heart there are marine vampires of some kind.

I was thinking the same regarding mermaids...in some cultures, aren't they considered vampiric? I mean, like the sirens of greek mythology, they lure men to their deaths, so they can feed off of them and maybe make male partners for themselves?

Abstract`s mythological being is called Rusalka!
In Romania the mythological sirens from the lakes and rivers are called "stima".

In slavic mythology, the ones who would die of a violent death(ussualy by hanging) or by drowning would become a strigoi.

Thanks Oceanne for your posts! That`s really iteresting!

Sirens have some vampiric features yes, but according to Orkeney folklore. A mermaid is looking for a mate so she can keep her unnatural beauty. (I wrote an article about it a few years ago) So she is not in it for the blood.

You could go as far as calling her a sexual vampire though.

Btw. Wicked but still very creepy videos.

Personally,I think it all depends on what a Vampire to you...In a traditional sense, perhaps not,but in others ways,I would say they might have one or two Vampiric attributes.Matter of fact,no marine animal really seems like a true Vampire to me..other than squidly up there.

This is a Vampire Sea Spider. It is actually a very funny looking creature. They live at the bottom of the ocean and they have a straw like sucker they use to drink the blood of other small bottom dwelling ocean creatures.
They mainly feed on slow moving soft bodies sponges and sea slugs.

If we are talking about things that come from the water... Well dont most parasites come from water, from the ringworm to the tapeworm and heart worm, and then the leeches, There are alot of marine parisitic species that live off another host, which in my opinion is vampyrism. a symbiotic relationship could theoritically be concidered a vampyric relationship.
