This is a question posed to me when i was doing media studies in college a few years ago. Would you all say, the media can copntrol what we think, feel, and shape our opinions? I use the presidential election of 2000 as an example. Every other american news network... but fox... said All Gore won the election. fox said it was Bush, and everyone juped on the bandwagon. That is just one example of media manipulation. There are others.
Am i making a valid point... or talking complete crap?
What do you all think?
The question you need to ask is does this thread belong on a vampire based forum?
Well, it does say general discussion and chat... so guess what, yes. It it had the word 'vampire' in there, i wouldn't put it.
Of course the media can dictate what we think , feel... ect...
You're on the internet... you go to school.... if these weren't pressed by the visuals put forth to us in every day life... would you be doing them? How about annorexia and bulemia? THAT shits DEFINATLY cause by *all kinds* of media...
Just my oppinion, but the short? Yeah.
I think it does to some degree. Especially those glued to it because they're stuck at home sick, or perhaps just don't have a job, etc.
Sort of a 'you are what you eat' mentality.
Thus, I don't watch the news.
I think this computer is starting to get tired of me.
it's eatting and adding posts.
No, Tenchi in my opinion you are making a very valid point, and like you suggested a prime example of this was the Presidental elections. The BBC was beating the Bush drums whilst ITV had their dance for Kerry. Another example of this is the commercials on telly, (damn how I hate the way they exploit woman) I think its about time we saw a man advertising the sales of vacums by sporting one around the floor! or using his favourite brand of washing up liquid instead of giving out the media message that this role is relegated to woman only! So yes! I believe media do influence our minds and thoughts a lot.
well they can dictate..
but it's up to YOU if you'll follow or NOT
i agree with king .. if your that weake minded and and cant make up your own mind then yes
I don't know what kind of power the media has over me. I DO know that I have the power to press the OFF button when I want to, though.
*shrug* they only have the power if you let them, and refuse to think for yourself.
I suppose WW2 nazi's used propaganda (radio papers e.t.c media outlets) sometimes it can give us a 1 sided viewpoint which can lead to bad things (UK persecution/distrust of Asylum seeker/USA the war is goin fine oh and dont mind all the coffins with the american flag on them .....they tried to ban the pics reachin us soil) so yeah i suppose so but only to a certain level you can switch off if need be (this is a valid thread by Tenchi if youre wondering how media representation of vampire culture good or bad hhhhmmm i wonder)
in 'chooseing' what it reports and how the media can direct ones focus upon essential issues it dosn't matter if it's not entirely accurate their reporting because they can always post those helpful little 'amendments' that they often do a week or so later in that obscure part near the back, by that time the storys gone and it's no longer relivent, but after publishing that 'amendment' they no longer become liable
if you're still following this thus far, then I'm probilby being more clare then usual ;)
since the story has already been a week or two gone bye it's no longer fresh in the mind nor is it relivent any longer as the next big issue is splashed on the front page..even if it has to come from overseas
the media has all the power it needs...because people have yet to have the common sense to hit an off button....and this is a generalisation on people...not a reference to individuals..I myself stopped watching the televallium years ago....then I found this crack called internet....woe is me
I believe that the media and anything else for that matter can and will influence those of a weak-minded nature, or simply those who just follow in the general populations footsteps. Like many others before me have said, you can only be influenced by something if you let it do so. Only you have the willpower to resist the pull, no matter how hard it may seem.
I agree with Req, the media only has the power a person gives it. The media these days disgusts me, but sometimes I have to use it, but I won't let it use me. Like Jason, I know how to press the off button, or at least how to turn to the cartoon network...at least THAT'S intertainment with a purpose!
the media is is the only way we can have information.
but medias r ruled by 1 thing, money!
hey give u informations that gives thgem the most money(true or false just matter in the among of money brought back...).
how about arafat???
if he died last friday5 november, and they replace him by a double?
what gives must?telling he's between death and life 4 ever or saying he's dead?
and it'sthat same with art and musik...
after listening to 1 title 5times a day, u'll also find it good earing...
you would think that people were in control of their own minds. look at the election. many people were afraid for their lives since cheney kept proclaiming that there was another attack on the way, much worse than september 11th. this message was drilled and drilled into peoples heads until they believed it to be true. the use of fear will do amazing things. i agree with most that you are in control of what you believe. there are many that try but give in to what they are being told. that's just the way it is.
rabdsquid is right!
when u see what u see and hear what u hear, u'r right thinking what u think.
and what u see and hear is dictated by medias!
yes, the media has a massive amount power over the people in australia here. especially teenagers. theres an ad on the radio at the moment telling everyone that blonde is the way to go this summer (even satan isn't sick enough to let this happen) and that magazines sell more when blondes are on the cover and tv ads are watched more when bikini clad blondes are on the tv and people are buying into that market. since the ads been on EVERYONE has been dying thier hair blonde and it's because of the media impacting on young girls. everyone here drinks coke to. never mind it rots your guts they don't care because bikini clad tarts are prancing around on the beach with buffed up guys and so it sends out the message that if you drink coke you too can be laid by these girls. and everything is sexual on the tv ads and radio ads lately giving the impression to children that sex is ok. every 2nd girl from year 9 upwards is walking around stagnant. that's not right. so yes the media have a big affect on our lives whether it be subconciously or not.
It has more influence over us than you would believe, but I'm too sleppy to go into it now.
What are you all trying to tell me? That I shouldn't belive it all?
You mean properganda is real? and I am just a minion .. a mere sheep follower....
Dam there goes my entire basis of exsistence out the window!
MEDIA is like a religion it is there to fill avoid that people are to lazy to fill themselves.
look at hitler he used the media to help in his anti-sematism which made alot of germans hate the jews,,
and now look at the allmighty 'god' prez bush hes using the media to stike fear into the americans {asshole} telling them that there is a constent threat there
HES CAUSING THE CONSTANT THREAT
through the media
We all use the media everyday, watching TV, reading the paper, playing video games, even the internet. there are those that are obsessed by it, and those who use it for there own gains. They're the ones that can say yes or no to the media... choose to believe in what they say, or turn a blind eye. the obsessed ones, they're the weak minded, and will do whatever the media tells them to do. So, for me, there are two type of people
Jason.. I don't know if we can just switch off that easily. I think media messages are everywhere...its all the little sublimal messages that can control thought patterns too
I agree with you Em.There's so much subliminal(sp) stuff out there.Think about what you're doing the next time you see a food commercial and you go" hey that sounds good i'm hungry."I've done and had to catch myself cuz if i didn't.......MAN
the media is only influential as an information source. if it is your sole source, then yes it does dictate what you think.
History is written by the victors
Thus so is reality defined by the media
Look at historical facts proven through science...
For instance there is absolutely no proof that the lunar cycles affect insanity or increases in crime or any such nonesense...
But
go to any police lock up on full moon compared to other days and you will hear an officer say well definitely full moon tonight...
The myth defines the reality rather than the facts
So yes I think media can control and dictate what people think atleast for a vast portion of the population....
lefaye... was there REALLY any need to dig up this old thread?!?! really?
it's gone and died... sadly not died enough so people can't post...
i think threads should expire after a certain time... just to cut down. it'd probably speed up VR too. it gets annoying when one person brings back a thread that's been dead for about two weeks. nevermind one that died several months ago
it does have the power.
I'd love to be on the side saying that it only acts as mind control on the weak, but i think it seeps into just about everyone in ways that are far more insiduous than the obvious "drink coke!" "ok...i will drink coke" sort of way that is easy to ignore.
I am an intellectual, a feminist, a free-thinker, and an athlete ...but when i use my computer and see 15 perfectly flat tummies advertising diet plans...it makes me look at my own body differently. It's not making me start atkins or get cosmetic surgery...but it's sneaking into my thoughts. i think it's unfair to say that it can only affect the thoughts of the weak. we can fight back, but it's stiill making us fight...i'd say that's some power.
Some people here should follow lafeye's example of digging back and bringing back interesting topics instead of reposting and reposting the same thing over and over again.
There is nothing wrong with bumping up a thread.
