Why is it considered an "unlucky" number?...and some superstitions..
Hmmm...This is what I have found out...(goggle whore!)

1. The number 13 has been considered unlucky for a long time, and by people all over the world. The early Romans thought 13 was a sign of death and destruction. And according to Norse mythology, if you sat 13 people down at a table, that was very unlucky. (Why? At a banquet of 12 people in Valhalla, an intruder –number 13 – caused the death of Balder’s son Odin). The number of people at the last supper of Christ and the twelve Apostles confirmed the superstition about the number 13 in withes were believed to meet in “covens” that hat 13 members.

2. The fear of the number 13 is called triskaidekaphobia. Many hotels have no room 13, and many buildings have no 13th floor. Next time you fly, see if there is a row 13 in the plane. As date, 13 isn’t too lucky either, especially when it falls on Friday. That was always thought of as a really bad day to start a new project or to begin a ship voyage. Movers, doctors and dentists say their business drops on Friday the 13th. The good news is that a maximum of three Friday the 13th can occur in a year, and sometimes there is just one.

3. The Roman numerals for the number thirteen is a witches symbol. Draw the X for the ten but put the three I's over it (it then looks like a square box with a line down the middle and an 'x' in it.)

4. Gods associated with the number 13 are Hades, the Greek God of the Underworld and Pluto, the Roman God of Underworld.

5. The color associated with the number 13 is black.

Friday the 13th of any month is said to be an unlucky day.

my parents were married on the 13th Fri. the 13th.....heh...its my lucky number...but i never new all those facts about why people are afraid of 13 like the old buildings never had a 13th floor it went straight to the 14th

The number 13 was even unlucky for buildings. Hotels sometimes would block of the 13th floor. I rather like the number 13. Then again I like all things that are sposed to be bad.. lol

13.. A very unlucky number for myself. I met a female when i was 23, she lived at a number 13. That number was the start of all my problems, self harm and suicidal tendencies.

I will never live somewhere with that number ever again.

Guys started the whole "13 is a bad number thing." A long time ago the #13 meant girl power. When the guys saw that girls were taking over, their machism turned them against the women. Since then, that's the guy's bad luck #.

Like in western culture that considers the number 7 to be lucky, the number 13 is lucky to most northern Italians. Like myself

However.. ever been to hong kong? they are so superstitious, they even build buildings with out a level 13, or an appartment 13.

It's hard to rent, let alone sell a property with that number

my stepfather works with a company that made building 12 and 14. after my step father became the building manager, he changed the 14 to 13.

But Dhampir, in regards to your full moon comment, isnt the moon more related to the tide, and therefore suggesting that was are controlled slightly by fields of the moons orbit? Whereas surely a number is simply a numerical anomelie if it is 'unlucky?'

I read in New York Times that In Japan (or China or Both) they fear the number 4 not the number 13... more people die on the forth there due to fright or studipd accidents while trying to avoid stupid stuff!

even if buildings skip floor 13 and planes skip row 13, technically they are still there. think about that one. or can you skip your 13th bday if you are superstitious and are 14?

I think a number being unlucky is rediculous. 13 is used in Friday the 13th, the 13th floor of hospital is abandoned. That's like saying 666 represents Satan and 777 is the Heavenly number. Sure, you can joke about it to an extent. But why push the line? It's stupid to think 13 is a 'bad luck' number.

My family is superstitious, especially my father...many years ago, when deciding on a home he turned down buying a lovely home and choose the one a few blocks down because the address was 131.
For me the # 13 has been lucky. Can't say that numbers influence my life but I do note them.
And in the city I grew up in Canada, there were no buildings with a 13th floor either.

yeah thanks king good thread to read i was born on the 13th so if it didnt exist in the calendar like it does buildings i wouldnt be here i guess funny to im adopted and my father is italian and im his only son (moreish ) says its lucky to them TY moreish for that info and here in aust if a black cat crosses your path on the 13th its considered bad luck so i look for them and ladders lol

The number 13 has always been lucky for me. I got my first corporate contract on the 13 of February. That and rain, (never have figured that out) I am always lucky when it rains. The bigger the storm the better the energy. Maybe 13 is lucky for some because of the negative energy all the "normal" people put into it, so if you happened to be tuned to that frequency of energy, maybe you can draw on it, kinda like a talisman or a chant.

Well, to me is just the number that comes after 12, and before 14, like that guy from "Appolo 13" said (oh no!...The Space-ship crashed!!! ;P) Now seriously. Here's another fact, concerning the number 13: Did you know that there is a 13th zodiacal sign called Serpens? I think it was "supressed" because of superstiton.

Personally, I think it's a load of crap. No one number can have an effect on things, that's just an incorrect superstition.

Friday the 13th I believe has a certain cloudy history. Way back when I think on that particular date many people were killed unjustly and some people fear their stain of fear anger and death has remained on that date. I don't know if this is actually true. But on those dates I have yet to have a bad day.
