if youv'e ever read the books QUEEN OF THE DAMNED, or BLOOD AND GOLD by anne rice tell me what you think of how differently he was portrayed in the movie the queen of the damned??
**he is not the one who made lestat.**
tell me what you think??
I didnt like Marius in the movie at all.
He was too much of a ponce. The way he held his finger to his lips and told lestat to appreciate his prey etc...
In the books he came across as a strong character, he just didnt have that impact in the movie.
I liked Marius in the movie just because hee was a ponce!!!!
maybe you should indulge in some eccentric reading material!
I think that Marius in the movies better suited a Roman SOlider as he was ment to be.... however I miss the long blonde hair from the book... thats what made him my favorite!
I have read the book yet, but i have seen the movie, i enjoyed the movie actually, but i guess i'll have to read the book then now i've heard this.
i m agree with daire when you read the book and see the movie there some little problem .......................
Funny you ask that. When I went to see Queen of the Damned to the theatre, I went with a friend of mine that's a really big fan of Anne Rice's novels, and she spent most of the movie, frowning and mumbling "this is wrong. That's not the way it happened!", but I never read Anne Rice my self, so all I can say is that I liked Marius caracter in the movie. Very wise, and definitly, my kind of fictional vampire.
He was rather good in the movie but I can't really say about the book....Those type of books are not my thing
I also went through the movie going "wrong, nope thats wrong, not right, waaaaayy off" I love the movie as a vampire movie, but was way off base from the book. Marius was not at all what I expected-dark, short hair, mincing attitude, DID NOT MAKE LESTAT, etc. but other things were wrong besides just Marius. I was expecting Marius to be stately, with blonde wavy hair, and he just wasnt the Marius I knew and loved.
LoL...I know how that is...just sitting there going "Wrong...backwards..Where did they get that idea!!!" as a fan of the books I hate it when they slaughter a character like that.... but I have to say besides all the flaws a butt-backwards story ideas it was purdy good.
Marius could have been done better, but what they did to him to fit the story wasn't tooo awful bad.
i liked the way that he was portrade in the movie. but that is just my opinon
Oh don't get me started...they wauy I was portryed is sickening....I dod not make Lestat, Magus did, I don't have brown hair mine is fair...do I need to tgo on......the movies do no justice to the books....Marius is one of the strongest elders....and Anne Rice should have been more envolved with the 2nd one but oddly enough she had absolutely NOTHING to do with it....
Also, Marius has a lust for life, the mortal things...he is fasinated by the way the world works..in the he *slept*.....All wrong I HATED QOTD with a passion as many of you already know.....it's a peice of garbage from the book...as a Vampire movie not reading the books I can how people liked it.
How about Armand...in Interview....Antonio....uh.....they need to read the book before casting people....I'm a HUGE Anne Rice fan...nuff said
Alright here goes.
1: They do not know how to cast people for the right parts.
2: Why in the hell did Anne Rice allow them to butcher her books the way they did.
3: I don't think that even if they had the right people to play the parts, anyone would be satisfied with them playing those people.
4: I think some books are meant to stay as books and nothing more.
Hummm... is there an explanation for Marius? I thought he was a great mentor though....
Marious you couldn't have stated it better!
I was exceedingly sad by the end of the movie- the Hollywood attempt to "clean up" this book (Queen of the Damned) was far worse than what they did to Interview with a Vampire. While I did like the Armand in QD better than Antonio B. (16 years old Please!) in IV, I really thought they strayed from the book so much that they ended the chances for the other books to be made into movies.
Most of the characters seemed very shallow and only parts of the metaphors were even put in (usually as props on the set). It was a real let down. I personally felt with IV that the idea behind the characters were more correct, if not as rich- at least you could see why they made the choices. In QD it seemed like the screenwriters said to themselves, "I like this idea better, after all no one will miss this” and so we lost out.
If you haven't read the book- it is definitely worth it as many of the characters expand and grow throughout it. Quite an enjoyable read, and then you might understand our disillusion with the movie.
i loved the book but the movie not so much......the only reason i like watching it is i think stewart townsen is HOTT......but i am a fan of anne rice i have all of her books
*pokes head in* Can I say something? In the movie, they said Marius made Lestat, because there wasn't enough time to introduce Magnus.
i liked armand in the film beause i thought he was a sexy vamp
Oy...Poor poor Marius...what did they do to him?! Heh. Too bad that Marius' character was so horribly done up "hollywood" style. Well, at least they got the red velvet thing right. The ONLY thing they did right.
Although I didn't really mind Vincent Perez portraying him, I did wonder where all that golden blond hair went to that Marius was notorious for. Well, that and the fact that Marius had much, much more respect for mortal life than he was portrayed having. I thought they were going to do it right when Marius said something to the effect that you must respect your prey--after he made Lestat in the movie--but then he stepped on the guy to break his neck or some such gesture. The people who wrote that movie seemed as though they only skimmed through the books and took only a scant surface rendering of the depth of Marius' personality.
though i havent read the book i loved marius in the movie and if you guys hated him in the movie and liked him in the book then ill probably hate him in the book only because i saw the movie first but ill see
i really liked the movie....never read the book..well i started to but then i lost it..so....hmm....=/
I've read Blood and Gold and the Marius in it was a much stronger and an overall better Marius than the one in Queen of the Damned.
I have not yet read the book, but after reading this thread it seems a must.
I just think they screwed all the Anne Rice Books up that they have tried to turn into Movies.
i hate when they take a great book and make a movie and change things... i find it confusing... i'd rather read the book than see the film
I agree, if you change one character you really change the flow of what the movie is supposed to feel like.
i thought MARIUS was strong and wise in
both the movie and the book,i liked both
i agree with Daire:
I didnt like Marius in the movie at all.
He was too much of a ponce. The way he held his finger to his lips and told lestat to appreciate his prey etc...
In the books he came across as a strong character, he just didnt have that impact in the movie.
Well I didn't think Marius made Lestat. I thought someone else did. I never really thought to much on the subject, but not that it has been mentioned, He was not portrayed in the movie, the way he was written in the books, but it was still a great story either way.
he may have been a ponce but at least he still had elegance and style to the things he did... that pretty much leveled him out
I thought Marius was awesome in the movie, he was adorable, and it seemed they used him as comic relief. As for the constrast differences, I think I like them both.
I like Marius in the book, because of what Anne Rice did to bring that to the table. As for the movie, because Anne Rice had nothing to do with it, they did a good job.
Although, they never do a book great justice in the movies. There have been few movies I've seen, that have been really good, that stick to the main ideas of a book, and don't change the characters around too much.
...i loved both the movie and the book because they were so different. I don't really connect the two and therefore am not disappointed. The charachter in the book is quite different tham the movie, and visa versa - i ADORE Vincent Perez. period. His portrayal of Marius imho was perfect for the movie. The character in the book is a whole different story and was perfect for the book. Comparing the 2 is like comparing a apples to oranges or a painting by picasso and a drawing by j.o'barr - both are genius in their own right. no comparison. :)
Coincidently I just finished reading Blood & Gold , So far my favourite and most complete of Ann Rice books, somehow I still prefer how marius of portrayed in the movie as in physical features etc. but the Blood and gold is simply marvellous. I'm going on reading The vampire armand and Pandora to see how it goes on their part... but Marius Rules.
Marius in the movie didnt capture my imagination at all, in the books I had imagined him as being someone powerful, very well built, with longish golden hair, ?& more beautifully masculine than Lestat, but in the film he isnt portrayed as anything near that
Why thanks you Yendor....many feel how you do....I'm Simply The Best Vampire Out There..
*smiles*
hmmmmmm......have you ever read the book titled "The vampire Lestat"?
I know I read "Blood and Gold"
::Winks at Marius::
Marius...hmm...He was who helped Lestat figure out more about himself if i remember correctly. And without him we would not have the beloved Armand. *sigh* The book Marius vs. movie Marius...I would have to go with the book.
In the movie, they did what they could with what they had. No, I havent read Queen of the Damned, I tried once, but I was completely confused because I didnt start with Interview with a Vampire, so I didnt finish. I think that the actor whom played Marius in the movie, was an exceptional actor and he played his role very well. I dont think anyone would have been able to have that role asnd pull it off like he did.
BOOKS ARE ALWAYS BETTER THAN MOVIES TO ME.. WE LET OUR IMMAGINATION GO WILD
i have read all the books severil times, i was disapointed that thay changed important parts of the story to make the movie, first off lestat was made by a crazed vampire by the name of magnus, who in fact stol the blood from anouther vampire, but magnus didnt teach lestat much about his new found nature, thats why he couldnt teach louis much of any thing, for me....the movie queen of the damned, was ok as a movie on its own, but i dont consider it to be part of the vampire cronicles
I have read all of the vampire chroicles several times and was personally disappointed the Queen of the Damned movie. Marius was protrayed badly but he was there, Mekare wasn't.
hmmmmm...... they messed up alot of things in the movies for example : Marius did not have a "buzz cut" OR brown hair if i remember in the book it specifically states that MARIus had blond wavy hair and in the movie "The queen of the damned" They portrayed Armand as having blond hair *rolls eyes* but Armand had dark red auburn hair
*closes her information you should know book* and continues drinking her tea
Id like to point out that the movie version of Queen of the Damned was NOT geared towards the fans of Anne Rice's books.
She had sold the rights to her novels many moons ago which gave the makers of ALL THREE films the leeway to do as they pleased.
I have said time and time again that if QOTD have been made according to the book not ONLY would it have been like FIVE HOURS... the general population would not have been able to follow it.
Thus the movie not making any mainstream money.
The people who know NOTHING about that book FAR outweigh those who do.
Yes, Armand was a 17 year old Russian with red hair.
Yes, Marius was a blonde Roman Senator.
NO... Marius did NOT turn Lestat... Magnus did.
NO... the violin did NOT come from the gypsy girl on the beach that night.
YES, Maharet had a twin... who in fact inherited the core of the race, not Maharet.
I really could go on... but like I said... one must remember... the film was not geared towards Anne Rice Fans.
It was made to make money.
And as I recall it did JUST THAT.
hm.... wasent the other twin named makerah?
I believe akasha had maharets eyes cut out and Makerah's tongue cut out
Read Queen of the Damned....
He's an old sentimental dude :P
The movie Queen of the Damned was Awesomely poor.
I can't believe I actually piad cash to sit in an uncomfortable chair for the hour it took me to leave.
It was a good movie..if you talk bout special effects and stuff.
Alisiha died before doing voice overs in that movie...her brother did a lot of the voice....
i liked the movie queen of the damn but usually the books are so much better in one aspects they have unlimited time in the book while a movie got to be shorter and can't go into detail so they cut a lot of it out and take what they think would make a good movie and sometimes change the story in otherwise butcher the book for things they want there viewer to take in
Maurius was horrible and fake in the movie. And I lost a lot of respect for Anne Rice after seeing that horrible movie. It butchered her book and she watched it happen and LET it happen. I could never have such little respect for my own art.
All I have to say on this subject was that I loved the books and the way the film makers portrayed some of the characters was very poor. I think they need to do their homework before just throwing some random actor on the set.
It seemed like they didn't think they had the time or money to really do a good job so they just tried to throw in as much sex appeal and figured all the vampire fans out there only liked vampires because hollywood says they're "sexy"
so screw their assumptions.
Thats really true. They changed Lestat's hair color...marius was just wrong...ech
Damn shameful that's what it was. And I heard that Anne Rice was watching the whole production and everything and that she LIKED IT! I would have threatened to sue or murder those people if they did that to my book.
yeah. It was a disappointment. If they do anymore they need to take more time. They mixed "the vampire lestat" and "Queen of the Dammed" together...
If they do that to Armand or anyothers...i will just die *swoons*
I think it should be some sort of law that books-movies should be no less than 2 hours long. Just so they can at least attempt to do a good job converting it to movie material without raping the original story up the ass.
That would be a good idea. Hmm...When i graduate Film school maybe i will take over...that would be a blast
yes, you could call on the good people of Vampirerave to come and help you hah. I would help.
I;ll do that. I am actually writing a script about vampires...I would like to produce
I think if fans did the movies..they would be alot better...as long as they stayed in the guide lines
It was just so disappointing I can't believe they did such a bad job. Such a letdown it was like they didn't even try at all.
I was up set when i saw the movie me and some friends just stood there after the movie and was yelling thats not how it happen they did Marius all wrong :(
Anne Rice had nothing to do w/ the movie. Perhaps it sucked partly because the movie rights were about to relapse back to Rice and they had to hurry the process along before that happened.
Look just keep the Movie & the book away form each other... Treat the movie as a "losely based on", perhaps it was done in Ann Rice's own interest to have the movie different from the books...having it as a sort of an 1½ advert for her collection of books.

Marius was supposed to be strong and intelligent, instead they made him....ugh..it is so wrong the way they made the movie..they should have found a better person to play his part..
at least they could of made him have golden long hair and be a little more statuesque.....I'm sure they had to shorten things pertaining to the movie but his appearance had nothing to do with the length of the movie!!!
anne rice stated in an interview once that if you look at the movies of her books as alternate universes of her world. like was intended. she thought her fans would love them. but i find vary few that can get into such a mind set
I've yet to read the book but the book is always better then the movies. I do like him in the movie. But I'm willing to bet he's a lot better in the books.
haven't seen the movie but the best description of marius i feel is in the book pandora...
I am amazed at how many people have not read the books, considering the subculture we are all a part of...
I am never pleased with a movie after I have read the book. The director in our mind and the one of the movie will never be able to see the same thing. You simply have to accept this and then watch the movie with the understanding that it will not be the same as the book. Stop looking for the inconsistancies adn simply enjoy it for that which it is, an adaptation of a great novel.
I've read Interview With The Vampire. It's the only one my school has (that I ended up stealing anyways). I'm looking for the other books as well.
Let see there was alot wroug with movie first of Marius had blonde wavey hair. Marius did not make Lestat. Marius made Armand. Lestat hair was wroug. The movie did not even include Louis or Armand in it. Lestat did not look like that. I have read all the books. Hopefully perhaps there will be a remake.
For me at least, if it wasn't for Marius in QOTD I wouldn't have taken more interest in him then any other vampire in the chronicles. So I can't complain at all about the Marius in the movie, in a way I prefer him than to the book but although loosely based on eachother I still think that Marius is my favourite character all along.
good points...all of you!!
if you haven't yet read a "book" with marius in it and you love his character I reccomend these:
Blood and Gold
Pandora
The Vampire Armand
I am reading "Queen of the Damned" and have not come across MArius yet. Just Daniel and Armand
P.S If you like Anne Rice. But want to read a book without vampires I would suggest Wilbur SMith as a possibility. Mary Shelly is also quite good. Sorry for sounding smart, i'm just trying to get my forum postings up. hehaha.
QOTD is truly a mind blowing book!
not even an 1/8 of that book is in the movie... enjoy.
P.P.S- Is anyone going to bother watching Night WATCH (or) if you live in America have you seen it?
Book over movies any day. Books allow you to create your own version of Marius and so on. Films spoil it.
Book over movies any day. Books allow you to create your own version of Marius and so on. Films spoil it.
the movie sucked the book was suited more to the imagination it allowed you to create your own fantasy of mauris
personally i didnt like Marius in the movie either... but i havent read that book so... : / sowyes...
i like the way he was protrayed, but i was very disappointed on just how much tey changed for the movie, they should have made two movies, The Vampire Lestat, and then Queen of The Damned
Marius was all wroug in the movie. He seem so weak. The movie was wroug. They need alot more help in making the movie I think. Because some of those vampires that were in book were almost never mention in the movie only a few.
The movie was very well made and beautiful but I disliked it for the reason that they left many intresting parts out in the book....
Im not a big fan of Ann Rice.... I cant get into them for some reason, but she still dose a very good job....
I have read half of the book Blood and gold and have seen the movie Queen of the damned. I like the way he was portrayed in the book more than the movie. He seemed like a stronger character in the book and also more of merciful vamp? But I thought he was definetely sexier looking in the movie lol.
One of the reasons I started reading Blood and gold was because of watching the movie queen of the damned. I don't think I would be as interested in Marius if I didn't see the movie first.
the movie sucked they did a horrible job with everything ..... how they butchered marius and such was sad ....
i love the book i have read all of them...
If you think about it in Queen of the damned lestat wasnt as he was suppose to be either. Lestat was suppose to have blond hair . . . then again . . . they kinda ruined the stroy completely in the movie . . . I wonder if they even read the book at all . . .
Books are the holders of information, if one can read adeptly.
Movies are for entertainment, barely.
i think marius is good in the books but bad in the moves
well first they got the look of him wrong.secound he was strong in the book. 3rd it was Magnes who made Lestat. but with both books that were made in to movies..i yelled at the screen the whole time, because of the writers changing looks, lines, and whole sceens. (as in) putting a line in the wrong persons mouth
OK... it's a very well known fact... to anybody who's seen books turned into movies that producers never stick stricktly to the material written... they try to give it their interpretation... and Anne Rice is not the first one to undergo this operation... think about Shakespeare for a first!
On the other hand I have only seen the movie... but not read the book... but a similar thing happened with Interview! You just have to stay put and sulk!
urgm..guys..there was already a thread like this about 2 weeks ago..however...i havent read the books..yet..but the movie was good even though it differs..from the book..it was magnius who made lestat and not marius...
and physically marius was stronger than how he was portrayed in the film..
however even though the film was different i think it was an excellent vampire movie!
I agree with what Marius said. Yet movies do change the story line much. In all movies this is done.
uhhhmmm...BlacksoulAngel.
I posted this thread 3 1/2 months ago.....
guess she didnt know... maybe it's the first time she really read what she rated....
