This is my first post,so take it easy on me.I am also a bad speller!!!
I read a shamans Journal about two years ago, the whole thing was great, it was given to me by me teacher of the shamanistic arts. The one thing that stuck out at me was the few pages about controling your dreams and it is easy. I have not mastered it but I dont think you can truly master something.
Before you go to bed everynight, you must study your hand, does not matter which one, but study your hand for a good 3 to 4 minutes, after that close your eyes and picture your hand on the wall, once you can see it on the wall say,"I am dreaming, I see my hands in my dream."
before we go on, how many have you ever seen you hands? I never did until this.
so, do this excersive for as long as it takes, eventually you will see your hands, when this happens dont stare at your hands to long because they will knock you back out of you dream, just look at them quickly, then look at your surrondings, when you awaken, write down everything you saw and repaeat this until you can control your dreams.
I can not tell you what you can do with this power, cause I was not told because you have to figure it out on your own, thats what the journal said, but let me tell you it can get real interesting!!!
wow that sounds interesting. i've never tried to controll my dreams before and i don't think it's something i'm interested in. i let my dreams take over at night so that i may gather greater possible insight later.
This is not an easy thing to do...but it can be done. I do believe that it would involve some form of relaxation and meditation techniques before going to bed to ease you into a deep sleep.
You should also try a dream book in where you record your dreams...they do mean something indeed.
My dreams tell me about the futur so I do not control them, I let them flow and show me what I need to see, but it would be cool if I would be the one in control. Still, the shaman are intriguing if you can get more info on this, it would be most appreciated.
Usually I just dream and let it happen but there have been a few random times where I've been able to control something. Nothing huge but it is interesting.
Controlled and random dreaming both have there uses/purposes...The viewing of the hands is one of many focusing exercises...It works for some and not others...Your best bet is to find what works for you...Clarity of the mind before dreaming is still always the most important aspect, no matter what you are trying to achieve within the dream realm...
Huhh.....I didnt' know you can control dreams.......thats awesome....... sometimes I have really weird dreams that I can remember but other times I can't remember my dreams and I dont know why.
very interesting post, i will have to check the focus exercise out for myself
I have had nightmares all my life, they used to be rather upsetting, now they while are still gruesome, I do believe that I have some control over them, not what you would call mastering them, but I have a certain consciousness while it is happening.
The nightmares of old were mainly filled with things that would chase me, then, as time passed they evolved into confrontation, non violent confrontation.
But now my sleep is filled with different settings where I walk through situations filled with torture and pain, most times I wake up just as I am about to die, other times it's like I am a fly on a wall, just taking a stroll through everyone else's hell.
I don't know, sometimes it gets pretty intense, but it seems so real, I can't shut it down, but I am aware of my surroundings at the same time.
I would say that control is probably the next step up, but I am aware of my surroundings through out the dream and I do go where I want within them now.Just the ending that gets a bit rough sometimes.
it sounds like the silva method, some of the programs in silva is also dream-control, i have tried silva method for 7 years now, and my expirence is very positive. i found a link about it, if anyone were interested for more info. but the out of body programs is the best (astral projection) whats going on to our minds is very difficult to explain, because none of us is alike, but very unique, and have very different thoughts and background, and much more for that matter.

Interesting, dreams are a mystery and a subject taht gets questioned a lot here, thanks for sharing.
Thats an interesting way to do it! but another way that i've learned to control my dreams is from a wiccan spell my friend helped me with...First is to lay down in a pitch black with some burning oil's or inscence...relax your entire body...and do some breathing exercises...(meditate in other words)...then once your relaxed, picture in your head a white spot in the centre...focus only on the white spot...then after 5 or 6mins you'll feel drowsey...when you start to fall asleep...picture what you want to happen in your sleep...(you become a rock star or you win the lottery!) this is what you'll dream about all night...but the best thing is...if you start to dream of something horrid or terrifying....do the relaxing your body and mind and breath deeply but calmly in your dreams and it should bring you back to your happy dream.....i've dont it about 7-10 times and it worked for me no problem...hopefully it works for you to!!
Interesting technique. I've heard of dream control before, but not with a technique like that.
WOW...I never heard of that! As for now...I can to a point control my dreams.
I know Im dreaming and so what I want...but then I can never make my control over the dream last..and I always know in my dream that I will lose it..its wierd..but yeah, ill have to try it!
I have heard of this but never tried it. I get many messages from my dreams, so I wouldn't want to control them. All you basically have to do is go into a deep meditation. Though, it is very difficult, or so I have heard.
Its called Lucid Dreaming.
That is really just one of many techniques to enhanse the ability.
Of course, I haven't successfully done it myself, but I have read up on it.
That shamanic technique is also mentioned in Carlos Casteneda's books. The shaman told him to look at his hands in his dream. The idea is that once you can do that, the next step is traveling. Once you have complete control over your dreams, you have completed one of the steps to power. Anyone interested in this sort of thing should read the books.
shaymans have always such interesting visions, I wonder if peyote has much to do with it too. , since the plant is considered sacred and firmly established in native religions.
Only a few of the native religions used peyote to induce visions. One tribe in South America used and uses a drink made from a native vine. Other tribes use tobacco in their ceremonies. In any case, the shaman is known to have visions in which he/she contacts the higher spirits to find a cure, lost soul, etc.
wow that sounds cool
i never thought you could control your dreams maybe ill give it a try
ive never tried to control my dreams, i prefer to let them flow, and if i remember them after i write them down in mydream journal. i look back on it sometimes, my dreams are rather creepy, lol
Interesting ideas. I find that at times I can controle my dreams but it is very rare and takes alot of consentration and preperation. Most times I just experience the dream and find that to be more relaxing and benificial.
Mm. My friend Bruce tried to teach/tell me how. It's actually called Lucid dreaming. Where you are in control of it. And the sights, sounds, texture and so forth becomes real.
Isn't there ALWAYS at least one part in your dreams each night that you can control? The concept of NEVER being able to do that seems foriegn to me... I think because I've always had that one part of my dream that I can control since... as far back as I can remember. And I'm finding out that some of my memories go back to two months old and little younger, so thats a long time. And sometimes I can control things throughout the entire dream, and I've never read anywhere how to control dreams. I had heard it mentioned but thats about it. Well now that I know it's not something that just naturally everybody can do I wanna read. Cuz I wanna find out what I've been doing. (lol... sry people, I've been finding out more and more doors like that that I had opened up myself when I was like 3 and now I'm finding out that most of them are NOT that common... at least figuring them out on your own isn't)
i used to be able to control my dreams when i was younger if i thought about something all day id usually dream about it... havent tried it since ive been over 13 but i might give it a go! thanks!
Great, I need something to control my dreams...they get crazy sometimes. I'm going to have to try this one.
my daughter did some of that when she was doing her psychology major ,kinda got into for a while too, takes a bit of conecentration to dream control she said ,i tried a bit but my mind is too scatty ,lol
cool ill have to give it a try, and dont worry about your spelling i am bad at that 2 ^_^ i think you did a good job for your first post
apparantly, if ya blink during a bad dream then it wakes you up immeadiatly
Grandeur! Lucid dreaming. An effective tool for visualization. Much More difficult, but has ten times the return. A great excursion away from reality anyways.
I very rarely get the chance, but when I do I take not time in wasting it. BTW: if you feel that you are coming out of the dream, rub your hands together, the "sensation" should hold you there a bit while longer.
That's pretty cool I have never thought about doing that maybe I shall try it.
Random..
I have been having odd dreams of a murder chasing me and I always end up killing him and dicing him up with a knife...
what the fuck?
actually i have mastered putting a mental block on my dreams so that in a way i don't truelly dream.
i would really like to control my dreams. mine see, to control me
Sounds interesting might have to give that a shot.
Thanx for the info everyone.
I have only been able to control my dreams a few times- the method that works for me is during the dream, if I can manage to say to myself that I am dreaming, I can theoretically control the goings on in that dream, however I can only recall very minor control of my dreams. Perhaps if I meditate more and ponder the concept of dream control, I may further my understanding.
Just my thoughts.
Will have to try that...other attempts never worked......at least I stopped having the reoccuring nightmare that lasted for years.
Sometimes I am aware I'm dreaming but helpless to stop what is happening to me. I still have the reoccuring dream that I put down in my profile..there's more to it, but that is how it always ends and no variations...but cannot move to see who the man is...
i will have to try that! i never even thought you could controll your dreams. it sounds rather difficult to be honest!
i know its kinda obvious but if you think about something a lot and worry about it.. chances are u will dream about it... or have a nightmare. u know
sametimes i want to c a good nightmare.. what can i do about it
i dont want 2 control my dreams.Dreams r a window into your subconsious and tell u how u really feel about different things. Your dreams tell u alot about yourself and how you have been affected by life
That is very interesting. I have always wanted to be able to control my dreams. I will have to try that and if I get any were with it I will definitely let you know. thanks for the information.
i will definetly have to try that, tho i hope that there are no side effects
Dreams can reveal lots of interesting information, this will be an interesting exercise in terms of self discovery.
i can remember alot of my dreams. i have controlled them before. its rare though.
I don't know that I would want to actually control my dreams, but I would like to better understand them, you know figure out what they mean.
I've been meaning to experiment with this for quite some time. I think I will start a dream journal soon and see where it goes.
One of my ex's and I used to discuss this all the time when we were dating. I didn't believe him when he first told me, but he naturally had the ability to control his dreams. If he wanted to fly, he could. He wasn't spiritual or anything, he just could do it. I could never do it, because I don't realize that I'm actually dreaming. I make decisions in my dreams, but they're really an extension of real life. Usually improbable, but they're always possible, which I why I think I don't realize they're dreams.
the hand thing isn`t a bad idea at all.... :) maybe I`ll try it one night.... as well as the dream journal.... sounds very interesting.... ;)
thats cool im pagen an iv done many spells to control my dreams as a form to see into the future almost ...
There are some very interesting responses here. I sometimes know that I am dreaming and try to control what is happening. Sometimes it works, other times it just rolls on its merry little way doing whatever it damn well pleases. I've never really tried to control it from the waking world into the dream world. I will have to see if I can manage it. I do believe that the things you are thinking before you go to sleep can influence what you dream, but after a certain point, my subconcious takes over. I do find that my dreams can be a little informative or helpful when I'm working on some project or another. Once in a while I can actually seem to control what's going on, but usually someone or something takes the control away from me. I think I should start to keep a dream journal. I usually can't remember them for very long after waking. That part may take some real practice. I think the thing I would most like to be able to do is understand what my dreams mean a little better. Does anyone know any good books about understanding your dreams?
I'll try this. I've always wanted to try and control my dreams and I'm also wanting to control what I do in them. For some reason I don't have any free will in my dreams. Could someone message me and explain why I have NO FREE WILL in MY dreams?
My dreams tend to focus on the supernatural world, or people I love who have passed on before me. For as much as they scare me sometimes, my dreams of the supernatural always send me a powerful message, and I believe that if I tried to control my dreams I could be blocking a very important message that could be the meaning of life or death for myself or those around me.
just thinking. a dream is what you make it. if you are controlling your dream then your not actually a sleep you are still awake. So a dream that you have is already being controlled your just not meant to experience it untill you wake up
i learned to control my dreams when i was about 7 or 8. i used to have this dream about a t-rex trying to eat me. he would always chase me off a cliff then i'd die. i had this dream a lot until i fell off the clff and survived. then i learned how to fly in my dreams. after that i could pretty much do what i wanted. in my dreams im pretty much invincible.........except for the time i got shot and died. but thats a story for another time.
dreams are only limited by your will.
you can't really control your dreams...you can control having them or not..but not actually controling what happens in them..you can dream about a certain thing but you can't affect what happens...dream scaping is a hard magick to learn..but very possible with a set mind and determination just be careful.
I've tried controlling my dreams once before, but it hasnt ever worked for me, so I havent really tried anymore. The concept is very interesting, but I like my dreams the way they are...
I am currently reading that book, "The Art of Dreaming" by Carlos Castinedes.
I never thought it would work, but I'm getting there slowly.
Since my grandfather taught me the art of dream control, I've found it to be quite easy, although disapointing. I use to have horrific nightmares as a youth. It was this that he told me to think of the nightmares before going to sleep, to remind myself that they are only my minds imagination, and thusly my own thought. Once I learned to 'own them,' they stopped. At first I would experiment in them, and after a while, it become second nature. Now I barely know if I dream or not.
It is fun to do, and actually doesn't take that much work. It requires clear thought before bed. Want to dream about someone you like? Roll over you thoughts and memories with that person, create a mini-play before you goto bed. Sure your dream may not be exact, but they will be in your dreams.
It is along the same principle of when you dreeam of the things you do at work. We work routinely, so sometimes it shows in our dreams. Imprinting the mind with thought.
I hope everyone truly enjoyed my thread, thanks for all the postive feed back.
Controlling your dreams can sometimes be a hard thing to do. Your mind has to be relaxed, and you must establish a rhythmic breathing pattern. As for the hands, I do believe it can be done, with careful concentration and the belief that you can do it. The dream world is one that should always be taken seriously.
that sounds interesting i do agree that i like to just let my dreams take over but it would be interesting to see if i could actually control them.
I have had night terrors all my life except for a brief period reciently but thats another story for another time.........
I have never been able to control my dreams I have tried everything out there. When I would try to write them out it would take over 2 hrs per dream because I remembered so much detail and it all seemed important. I will try your method as well and let you know how it turns out :)
i difinfitely need to try that i been having nightmares about friends dying and them coming true and i just want to make it so they live in my dreams
Wow, thanks for the advice about dream controlling. I've had some really hard to get over dreams and knowing there is a way to stop them really helps a lot.
i always try to control my dreams. i was into meditation centres b4 and learned a lot about dreaming and controlling them. thanks for this great thread
Sounds interesting, but what do you do if you never (or almost never) remember your dreams?
interesting. I've just begun to control my dreams here lately. Usually i'm not in control b/c they're so crazy and wild that i'm standing back in awe
This is exactly how i managed to controll my dreams 7-8 years ago, and now i almost do it every night. Its really cool, im God in my own dreams, i can do anything.
just a tip on a good homepage for some more tricks you can use.
http://www.ld4all.com/
Getting control over emotions and the way your body relaxes is a bit of a struggle. I always seem to find myself drifting in and out of my dreams a little too easily.
I remember everything about what I dream unless I have a terrible cold or something else that takes away concentration. But, I've learned to let myself just experience my dreams without interfering too much with the way certain dreams play out.
But it is fun, once in awhile, to take control and dream about what you really want to experience.
could I use this technique to learn to remember my dreams also?
getting only slightly off point, what you eat, drink or 'smoke' just before you sleep, can have an affect on how you percive your dream state, as well as any scent in the air (ie incence, sandle wood).
I have found that eating fish and rice (high protein and good for the brain) before and having warm lavender scented oils by my bed, mean i am able to put myself into a better mind set before sleep, and my dreams are easyer to control and remember the next morning.
I don't think I want to control my dreams. That would be like cheating on a test, ya breeze through all happy and care free, but, you don't learn anything. Keeping a dream journal is an excelent idea. A great tool when soul searching. The best way to know yourself is to interpret your dreams.
I found an even easier way of generally controlling your dreams is to meditate before bed and completely clear your mind, then just focus on what you actually want to dream about. basically the same thing, only sometimes it is easier to focus.
This is the first i have heard of this type of dream control, however like everything in life there are many ways to return the same result. A simple meditation just before bedtime will allow u to do the same thing. A Clearing of the mind and focusing the energy in ur body with the intent of controling ur dream. Something as simple as a suggestion u write on a piece of paper before bed then thinking of it during a meditation just before sleep will help u to learn to control ur own dreams.
My dreams have mostly been of past or future events and alot of times about learning. At times tho when my dreams skew from the normal i love to take control of them.
Does anyone here interpret dreams of theirselves and others? If so message me I had an odd one last night and was wondering if you could give me some insight on it.
And another question if you start controlling your dreams and it gets easier and easier for you to do it are there times when you don't even really have to try to controll them and it just happens? Just curious because I'd like to try it but would not want it to become that easy to do it as I do like letting my dreams flow naturally also.
I dont even have to try anymore, i just know its a dream i can controll it, it comes very easy.
personally I let my dreams freeflow...
I am always aware I am dreaming, but by letting it go where it may, I gain much insight...
the only time I seem to need to control my dreams is when I'm dream walking other people, I would hate to carry over any of my images to some one who is unprepared...
what is it with sleep walking? is this some sort of experience or is it something very normal?
re: luciddream
i guess it wouldn't hurt to try controlling my dreams. how long did it take until you could do it that easily? and also if you want to can you NOT control your dreams or do you just automatically fall asleep and control them now? i guess that's the only part i really feel iffy about. i like to let my dreams go where they may but i would like to try this at least once to see how it is...who knows i may want to keep doing it.
also i guess this could be a great thing for those of you who said you have nightmares or sleep walk. being able to controll them would be very helpful to you i would think.
re: hisgurl
I think it took me a few weeks before i could controll them, and a few years until it was easy. No i can choose not to controll them, and just follow them where they lead me.
Sometimes i do that, and i like to try things in my dreams, listen to music, smell flowers, taste food etc. Its as real as IRL.
ty for answering! i've never even thought about smelling, tasting, etc in your dreams. what about touching and feeling things i wonder if that's possible.
hisgurl:
yes its possible, but the only thing i have noticed is that you dont feel pain so much as in irl, but everything else i have tryied is as real as in this life.
before i goto sleep i think about what i want to try in the dream, and do it when i start to dream. if its something you want me to try i can do it :P
This is something I must try. I am sure results vary among people, but, it is worth a shot to see how much control can be taken.
ty so much for all your info luciddream...and everyone else also...expecially Dragonicblood for starting the whole thing!! this is so interesting and its nice to have people who have done it alot shed some light on it for someone whose never done it and would like to try it.
luciddream...i'll have to sit and think about that one a while...when i come up with something i'll let you know i have a few ideas running around in my head already :P
I've been able to manipulate my lucid dream state naturally since early childhood. Hmmm, I never thought much about it really, it was always just something I could do.
I have tried controlling my dreams before.
Like ALOT, when I am having nightmares or just want to wake up for who knows what, I fall off a cliff.
**I had a dream once where I was in this office (cubical) and I had a chick in there and you could see through the windows and they werent ceiling high, so I tried controlling my dream (cuz I knew I was dreaming) by making thewindows go further up to where no one could see me fucking her, but it didnt work. They decided to do the opposite of what I wanted, so then I tried doing the opposite of what I wanted, and that still didnt work. After I finally said fuck it and just went to fuck her, I woke up! GRR!
I can now say that i have tryed this out. For me it worked only once and i was only able to control one dream but it made me stop having the same occuring nightmare so i do believe that it works.
Ok, so I like my dreams when and if I can remember them (no they're not always a good thing, but they do provide needed insight on something, many times I just have to look at them from a different perspective) But this aside brings me to why I am adding to this thread.
I have a question for you guys. I very rarely am able to remeber dreaming at all. When I do, I know it is important, so that part is nice, but I would like to try to reember more of them, or possibly I have just trained myself to forget them? Either way, does anyone know how I can remember them? The journal thing doesn't really work, as I have no recollection of them whatsoever when I awaken. Thanks for your time!
~J
I think I will try that, but I can never remember my dreams. :/ I wish I could....
once you get used to controling your dreams you'll be able to do it without even trying.
when you get to a situation that your not comfortable with you'll do something about it and get yourself out.
hahahaha ok i'm not a beliver of the shaman thing and that ritrual sounds interseting tho but most of the time when i do have dreams i can control what happens just by beliving that i have that power to do what the fuck i want since its my dream
Interesting topic....
I have always been aware that I am dreaming, and therefore (like some others), have been able to control the dream.
in my last dream a friend of mine told me it was 10am. I woke up right away, the time of course was 10am strange
the hands-technique is new to me - different methods for different minds.. I find stress levels have a LOT to do with how well I can control a dream. Most of my time recently is swamped with medical paperwork so my dreams have to do with diagnoses, most recently self-diagnosing.
When it's summer time and I have minimal worries, I "know" I can control a dream if I walk towards a lightswitch and touch it on/off. If it reacts then I know I can't do anything about it - If it does NOT react then I know intrinsically that anything I want to think about happening will occur if I "walk" into the next room of my dream...
I am not sure why I would want to control my dreams... I see dreams as a source of inspiration bringing me thoughts and images that I may not even think of while awake... I would like to enhance my dreams if possible. Make sure they are more exciting and as weird as possible...
I agree..I see them as messages, like mentioned before inspirations.
Ohh ya lucid dreaming I do it all the time I can controle every thing. BUt some people arnt ready too, because in your dreams you can save an entire planet or destroy it, some people just cant handle that power yet
sadly enough that wouldn't work for me since ive tried something similar and i have no images when i sleep, its more like just a state where i dwindle apon sleep and consiusness
i am cursed a lucid dreamer.
ironically, i am also an insomniac.
heh.
daeg.
That seems really interesting and I will definitely but I think even before I try this that I have some control of my dreams. I've been able to tell myself what to dream and how to act and shape things in my dream. I dont know if this demonstrates that I have some power over my dream or not but I will now try further to understand this.
I would like to clarify something about dream work. The psych people will analyze 'till the cows come home about the meanings of dreams. But this thread is not about that type of dream work.
Lucid dreaming is a great topic to talk about. It is a very "new-age" thing to do. And there is threads about it here on VR. But the Dream work that the Shamans want you to work on is much different.
This is something that you do at a conscious level before, during and after your sleep. The other two topics that I mentioned do not teach this. There is a tribe of men, that's just the way it is there, that promote this type of dream work. And have been doing this for many years. Before anyone goes off to sleep, the men discuss what they are going to dream about. After, in the morn, they get together and discuss their dreams to see if they indeed dream of what was said the day before. This is great because they all get group support and confidence. The Shaman journal that was mention is trying to do the same thing. You get self-confidence by remembering your hand on the wall with your inner vision. Once you gain that vision, you carry that vision with you in your dream state. You keep a dream journal to record the vision of your hand, for it will change, to gain the group support. The "hand" is your intent or per-dream that you wish to bring with you when you sleep. This also is a great exercise to gain "one center focus" that you must have for vision quests and astral travel.
In my research to control your dreams actually helps you control reality as well. Much like a spell or prayer, it is a collective of desire and imagination manifesting before your eyes. I have controlled my dreams before, not perfectly but enough to know I was dreaming and what I wanted to dream. Same with telekensis, to move something with your mind you must believe it and focus on that desire to manifest it into reality before your eyes.
Demdorgon:
dont try to hard either, just relax for a few days and try again.
http://www.ld4all.com/
i think i have post this page before, but its some awsome tricks u can use from them.
not all work on me, i first leard to controll my dreams fro m looking at my hand, now i use alot of tricks, cause, its so real in my dreams now, but the clock tip and the hand tip works best on me.
i could wrire a guide that worked on me
and a few cool things u could try when u master this , im never angry IRL anymore, i take out my anger in my dreams.
if u want any tip at all just msg me! :)
