I have heard of spirit guides that supposedly guide you on your way to spiritual enlightenment. I have heard that they take the shape of animals and are some times referred to as animal totems. I have quite a few questions about this.
First, do you believe in animal spirit guides? If so, what is yours? How did you discover that you had one and what animal it has taken the shape of? Are they same as familiars? Hoe do they help you? Is it just with decisions you make with your spirituality or is every day decisions? (probably a stupid question, but I am curious) I have very little info on this subject and I have a lot of other questions, which I will ask once these are answered.

I do believe in spirit guides, The native american indians ( no slang, sorry if i offend) mad this a well known thing, I believe my spirit guide is the white wolf, who comes to me in dreams and warns me of situations. yes spirit guides are useful and are around if noticed.

i certainly think they exist..
they take the form of animals, angels or even appear as people.
i've never had any experience personally with one, so if i have one it hasn't been revealed to me
they are very fascinating to me though

Yes I believe in Spirit Guides . Mine is a Black Panther . It first came to me when I was a teenager , it still comes to me when I'm meditating and in dreams . Spirit Guides are helpful and always around when you need them , and will come when you call on them for guidance .

Yes I do beleive we have spirit guides, they are like waiting for us and when they find the oen they are link to guide they just do it, they help out, make sure the decision are good and well taugh and sometimes pin point to the right directions when needed

Raynne it kind of feels like a little weight in the back of your mind. Something that jabs at you when you are thinking of something and need help (or give some seemly random spark that helps out with the thought). Plus I sometimes feel like I know something and I do not know from where, though it feels like a suggestion that you can file under just an idea.

Like something is telling you something, but through your logic, imagination, subconscious, and a deep otherworldly place. Something that feels like a part of you but not.

I could keep going, but it does get kind of hard to say why after some point.

Raynne I would not be shocked. They be your intuition given a mind and shape of its own.

It is a part of you all the same. Just a part that can talk back and help you on your way. Just sometimes you get random thoughts from someplace that you know is in you but does not feel that it is from you.

i believe in them, and i have several. we all have more than one, and they change as we go through life, for our needs and where we are spiritually change with time. i discovered mine through spirit journeys. there is a small artical on this to be found in the spell section of my journal, if you wish to know more.

I do believe in spirit guides, sometimes we can have several different ones in a lifetime. I think I have had several different ones; I am not aware of my current one as of right now, however.

I definitely believe in spirit guides however I think that guides and animal totems are two different things. I believe that guides are assigned to you in order to help you with a particular issue or problem that you want to resolve in your daily life, and that you accept them and their help in order to work through it. Animal totems are move like protective spirits which impart a part of their nature onto you. Just my personal beliefs.

Relax and meditate, they will make themselves known to you if you're open to it. Don't expect words, it may be feelings or emotions or even just a sense that you are being watched over and protected.

I'm not necessarily saying that I believe in them, I was just curious about the subject. If they do exist, I would like to know what mine is. I would like to think that something watches over us even if it isn't a guide. I want to hear what every one has to say on the sunject even the skeptics because as of not I am leaning towards the side that says that they do exist.

Spirit Guides are like obvious omens.
They appear to us all the time however we choose to ignore most of the stimuli; just as we end to ignore how hot or cold it is, or the exact colour of the sky.

There is a parable (I will paraphrase the jist of it) of a man who has died poor and crippled and alone, and is lamenting after his demise that he was not warned of the event.

He is told... did you not see the beggar, and did you not pass him by without pity?

Did you not see the old woman, bent under the burdon of her load, and pass her by without assisting her?

Did you not abandon your son when he was in need of you most?

The world is filled with reminders of our nature, and of it's laws and concequences.

Spirit guides are only a focused way of percieving these.

I think that they are out there we just dont see them.........

ok from an Native view here... they are two different things.. sort of lol

the basic idea of what they do is about the same.. help you thru things but as a rule totoms teach as well... help you learn the lessons you may be faceing at any time.. and they can and offten do change.. as your lessons change.

Spirit guides ( what ever form they take.. human animal .. angelic.. demon) are with you always.. they offer aid and guidence but not so much of a teaching thing. Not to say they don't but its a bit different Totums will not always do the protection thing as guides are very known for.

Here is a little information that I have and wanted to share:

Power Animals~~People are drawn to an animal in their consciousness. A special bond with a power animal creates a totem guide(most favorite animal in the whole world). Mine is the horse.

Totems or Familiars~~Messengers and guides from the 'Otherworld'. They may come in physical form or through dreams and meditation. Each animal brings inspiration and guidance.

Spirit Animals~~Humans have nine spirit animals with them during the "Walk of Life". Seven share and guide one's talents, abilities, and emotions. The other two may be your power and dream state 'Otherworld' messengers that walk by your side.

Familiar Guide or 'Otherworkd'Totem~~Whether an animal crosses your path while you are awake or asleep, the message is strong and direct.

Shadow Guide~~Why does this animal create anxiety, fear, or confusion within you ? Snake, Spider, and Roach are just a few famous shadow guides, and yet they have a very important place in the universe.

Power Totem~~this is your lifetime messenger....your favorite animal. Mine is the Horse.

Otherworld Totem~~dream state or physical animal visits during the moment...You're driving home and a hawk flies overhead.

Shadow Totem~~this animal creates self anxiety for unknown reasons. yes even a roach has its very important place in the universe.

I do believe in Animal Totems. I think we all have one, but i don't know what mine is.

I trhink that, after reading all of these responses, that if it wanted you to know what form it has taken, it would show itself to you. I think that if you meditate, and clear your mind, it will make it easier for it to contact you.

I wouldn't say that I need guidance as of now, I am just really interested in the sunject. Maybe they are not coming to me because I do not need their guidance. I would like to know what they are and if I have them.

I’m a firm believer of spirit guides. Mine is a black panther. My black panther came to me in a dream sequence of mass preportions. I was mearly trying to explore my outerself to find a guide. She, came to me as I was seeking though out a cloudy vision. As the night fell her glowing green eyes lit my path. Some can be familiars. I know a few people that have familiars that are their guides.

Mine helps protect me from doing things that aren’t supposed to be on my path. She’s always with me protecting me from danger. She mainly just helps me on the choosen path I’m supposed to follow. Sometimes I take detours and she’ll growl at me for making the decision but she knows it’s mine to make. If I choose the wrong way she will step in front of me in an attack position.

Spirit Guides r with u to the end. they r there whaen u rborn till the day u die. they may take shape of a human such as a hobo or ranom people on the street at times. they also take forms of animals the most common is probly eather a cat or dog what ever u praffer. they like to take from of whatever u are most comfertable with. they r there to help u.
Familiars are just ramndom spirits put to help ur guardian to help guide u in the right direction. faliliars are not alwas with u as the guardians are but they do help ur prosess of life. (//-^)

Some people have the same spirit guides with them their whole lives. For others - like me, for example - the guides change during different life circumstances. I'll give some examples:

A couple of years ago, when my dad was sick with cancer, I had lots of dreams about white-tailed deer and seeing them all the time(doesn't help there's a huge population in my area). I did research on what they represent and one of the things I came across was disturbances that would be settled. For me, that represented my father coming to the point where he was done with his first chemo treatment and radiation treatments. Things settled down a bit shortly after that.

After my father passed away last year, from the day that he passed away and until several months after I was constantly seeing hawks flying in the air, no matter where I was going. I saw the first one flying overhead while my uncle was driving me out to the funeral home where my family would make arrangements for my dad's viewings and funeral service. As soon as I saw the hawk, I knew it was my father watching over me and letting me know that I would be okay.

Lately, my animal seems to be the raccoon. I'm always seeing them when I'm out driving around, whether it's during the day or at night. Again after doing research, the one thing about them that stood out was getting rid of confusion about things, and it's true.

All animals have certain characteristics that draw them to one person or another. But to the individual, their closeness to their spirit guides could have their own personal twists. It all depends on the person, and the animals themselves. I hope this all made sense. *smile*

I believe in guides whatever they may be... I unfortunetly haven't found mine as of yet but I do feel something is showing me certain things.... I started listening to it and I haven't been in as much trouble as I have been in the past....

i do believe in amimal spirit guides which as you said is kinf of like a familiar..mine is a white owl and it shose me i did not have the chance to choose it.
it came to me first in revalating dreams then in my concious life when dramatic changes where occuring withing my family,the owl has always helped me to understand and deal with things in a way that i could not before.

I believe in something that guides us be it an animal or angel or a relative that's passed. I wish I knew how to be more open to mine so I can hear what it says.

I believe everyone has a Spirit Guide. A Spirit Guide's job is to support, advise and encourage us to achieve the goal we have set for ourselves. But they never interfere with the choices we make. Even though you can't see your Spirit Guide don't be afraid to talk to them. I talk to mine all the time. I even thank mine often for being with me and giving me guidance.

My teacher taught me how to get mine. if your think your strong enough you can try it. find out what ever your elements fruit is. ( earth-apples, water-grapes, fire-oranges, air-peaches) and try to go for a month living on just that while meditating every day. this is more of a "you gotta be alone by a tree in the woods for a couple of weeks" thing after eating only that fruit for so long you will become highly in-tune with you element and like spirits around you.

yes I do believe in them.. I was shown mine in a sweat lodge on a Souix reservation while visiting my best friends home ..I take this as a great honor in be able and invited to participate in such events .. It ws a great expeirience that I shall never forget .. One of mine is a Black panther .. the other I dont wish to say at this time ..

I also believe in totems and spirit guides myself. My main 2 are a Bear and a Wolf, and others that I have had are Blue Jays, Rabbits and Owls

I haven't heard of rabbits as totems or guides. From reading all of this posts, I would say that the black panther is the most common guide. Do any of you have any speculations as to why that is?

I believe everyone has spirit guides and animal totems. They just need to be recognized. Like someone said earlier they are around you giving you signs if you just pay attention. For example maybe you see a crow flying around and it seems to follow you long enough that you feel a connection with it. look up what crow teaches us.

This site tells you what each animal teaches, and towards the bottom where it has "Delphi Forums" if you sign up there are several exercises on finding and connecting with your spirit guides.

I once had a hamster spirit guide...I couldn't believe I got a freaking hamster, but I learned the lesson it needed to teach me and have moved on. Hamster lol

I've heard of spirit guides, but I have no idea if I actually have one or not... And it's hard to say that I believe in them, but I'm sure anything is possible especially since I am a believer in spirits

My spirit guide is called "Gothy" from an old family joke.I just learned the last several years his real name is Nicovich.And am not sure of the spelling there, in case he is reading over my shoulder*grins*
From what I understand of him, he has been in my family for generations on my Mum's side of the family.When I do hear him speak, I get the impression he is from Russia , one of the Baltic countries.
He is ever present in my life, and is most comforting.He made himself more known to me during my awakening.But now when I think back, he was there when I was young.I just did not know what I was seeing or hearing at the time.

He has helped me with my awakening as well and is just kinda a sounding board when I just need to vent or just talk.

I believe in them to. another reason is why, is cause im native american. and like the second replier to this said. They believe in them. and I do to. I'm still figuring out which one mine is. Between a bear and wolf. they both describe me in the summaries. and we both have the same qualities. and i've always been interesting in both animals.

There are many different spirit guides, there are ones who are like gardian angels, and there are ones that take another form, i have two spirit guides that a more like angels than a phicial form, there names are Jewlie and Hanahhra (imposible to pronounce in any language) they help me, through meditation you can tap into and learn about your other worldly spirit guides, but then you have you physical spirit guides, mine is my cat, he speaks not a word but telepathicly conects to tell me things. (im not crazy)

Yes I do believe in spirit guides . Mines is a Tiger . I found that out in a sweat lodge by my friend who was full blooded Cherokee . BTW I'm part Cherokee . I do go to Powwows every now and then . I used to sing the songs . Sadly I've forgotten most of them . =(

spirit guides are real and in come in many forms but one must be careful there are evil spirits that will pose as a spirit guide so when you search do it well and be careful

and the other is Delila.
Ceade is a tree nymph.
I think.
She is like a tree spirit.
Delila is a girl a bit older than me,
and she talks me through things.
I used to think she was evil,
but I actually found that she's just trying to help.

when they are ready,
they come to you.
Or, you can look for them.
Delila came to me,
but I went looking for Ceade.

My spirit guide is the wolf, my chippewa friends where I lived showed me him and he is there to help me make decisions and chose my paths. He comes to me in dreams and during meditation.

Yes they are real, and I feel mine is my uncle in form of a bird that has been comming to me since he passed away.
