What do you think makes a ghost or spirit evil or nice? Is it unfinished business or someone living in their house?? Is a good spirit just that way because it had a happy life? What do you think makes them good or evil?

I think that it wether or not a spirit is good or bad, is decided from what emotions that person was feeling at the time of death, or what emotions that they felt threw out his or her whole life wether it is great sorrow or happiness. That is what I believe.

This is my own theory and may not make a whole lot of sense, so try to bear with me here . . .
I theorize that spirits have to draw in all the energy around them in order to continue to exist, in a way. If the area where the spirit is located is mostly filled with negative energy, the spirit will be drawing in that energy and therefore becoming negative itself. The same goes for positive entitites.
That's just my theory. Hopefully it made sense lol.

I think it is their Life they lead and if they were damned and wear the chains they built in life they wwill forever do what they can to get revenge but they can't do very much

I agree with Cryingmist the energy of the spirit if it was once alive will be the same. Good and bad all lie in intent and frame of reference. For example: If a spirit is trapped in a specific place and it doesn't know how to leave it but it wants to be alone then is it really evil to scare off people in a way that doesn't hurt them?

I think it depends how violently the person died, or it could just be the way they were in life.

If someone lived a very hateful and hard life, then they tend to have grudges built up inside them. I think also, if someone dies in a grip of rage (so to speak), then their spirit won't be at peace.

There could be many factors leading to whether a spirit could be good or evil.

i think it depends on the life they lived. if they die unnatural death they might tend to become evil. besides if someone has been wrongly murdered they might take revenge as spirits.

I don't think it is clean cut as good/evil. The spirits are in a world that we can't begin to comprehend. I think it is crazy that we can judge a sprit on our 'mortal' standards. We have no idea what motivated the dead.

Some factors would be whether they were happy when they were a live. Or if when they died they had something goin on in their life that made them unhappy.

Look we can't just say good and evil we can't begin to comprehend the form and the ways of the spirit relm it is inconcievable mainly b/c we are not meant to really understand things of that nature until we bcome it only then will we truely get the concept u can go as deep as u want but the plane truth is u'll never find the real answeres untill u experince it.

I belive whatever a person was before death is what they are like after death, so if they were a good person then they would be a good spirit and if they were a bad person then they would be a bad spirit...

I always thought that the spirits that hang around this plane of reality are trapped for some odd reason due to how the died.

I don`t think there are evil spirits, every spirit has its reason why its still on earth

i think it all depends on how they lived before they died, if they were evil in life then they will stay that way after death, i also think that how a person dies may have an effect as well, if they die violently against their will, for instance.

i think a spirit acts out the way a small child would....not so much evil as its not getting its way...like doesnt want ppl in their house..things like that...and they act out the frustration they feel...

it is the essence of their being. they are good of bad by nature. the eternal order of ballance must be kept.

ok i agree with alot of those answers. what makes them violent or do you believe those are demons? you know, the ones that throw things across the room and things of that nature.

If think it's mainly how they lead their life when they were alive, and what emotions were running through them just before they died.

Seems like it's come down to a) how they live b) how they die c) where they are and d) what they do. My question is, do you think spirits that end up sticking around, whatsoever the reason, are more likely to be evil than good? Maybe the good have more reason to move on to whatever their next stage is and the bad are maybe afraid of what it might hold and so cling more tightly to what they know in this world.

i think that if you were a bad person before death then your soul will carry out what you had started
but if your a "pure" spirit and do what your "supposed" to then your soul wont even live on cause you have done what you were supposed to accomplish....

yes a spirit could turn into a kind person because in the end it is a choice. Spirits make the choice to do evil things or to do good things. With that said, I don't really believe in good or bad spirits. It's too blanketed of a term, it's like labeling a kid a bad kid because he made bad choices. Spirits are neutral and they make choices. Sometimes they make bad choices and sometimes they make good choices. A socalled "bad" spirit is one that predominately makes bad choices. However, they can become "good" spirits by starting and continuing to make good choices.

A lot of people have made good points here but I think that in a way each of them is valid. I think that its a combination of things. How they lived is a big part of it, so is how they died. I think unfinished business is a difficult thing to attribute to a spirit. I could see how a murder victum would want justice, but what about the murderer who then commits suicide. Several folks that I know have seen the ghost of a person who used to live in their grandparents house being killed along with the person who killed them. At it gets repeated over and over. I can see why the ghost of the victum is there. They want justice. What about the murderer. They completed their business. They killed the person. Why then are they still around? It is a complicated mess that might never be fully understood.

I think that it has to do with if they were a good or bad person when they were living.

I do not believe ghosts, if that is what we are talking about, are evil or good. They are catagorized by us according to the way they make is feel about them. Poltergeists are not ghosts, but cause 100% of the phenomena attributed to them; flying objects, doors opening and closing, even sounds. They are subjectivly bad because they scare us, but not evil. Even the evil spirits, or deamons, are only evil because we believe they are evii, some believe they are an enemy of their god. What we do not understand we make up.

rarely there is a time when a spirit can be evil or good because of unfinished buisness but mostly it is how they lived out their life in the human world

a spirit can manifest itself in the energy it chooses..for example sometimes spirits are angry..but that doesnt make them evil..just confused...

I dont believe unfinished buisness is why a spirit is evil or not, because evil or good spirits have some type of unfinished buisness, I belive they are evil because of how they were when they were alive...

Who wouldn't get mad if your stuck in a place you don't want to be. Can imagine the frustration some of those spirits must endure.

It is sometimes the job of a conscripted entity to drag souls to the abyss, as well as cause all manner of hell and so on. As with ghost the same can be as well.

It just matters what they are doing, and why they are doing it. As well as if there are people pulling the strings behind them. If they are here, they are abiding some form of natural law.

Also, a spirit might act differently depending on your reaction to it. If a spirit that's none to happy with it's existence is in a house with someone who wants to throw holy water on it and thinks the devil is in their hour then the spirit is going to be more annoyed than with someone who is trying to calmly talk to it.

Just an example.

i think when we die we are something totally different in our next life. i feel evil spirits and good spirits come for 2 reasons..one because they were very abused or soimething to that matter... and they dont cross over or something to become different spirits.. or its just a thing were when we die we are soimeone difrerent

I think that ghost or spirits are just like us, that in there relm, we are the ghosts/spirits that are doing our every day rutine and it bothers them as well as they do us...or in my case facinate....

I'v read many things on this, from silvia browns therory to other advanced books in spirituality. I agree with most people here about how the person lived and are just basically doing what they felt at the time they died.

However, for most spirits, like ones that got murdered. These from my studies seem to be replying because their shell when they died did not decentigrate but their spirit has moved on. Most ghosts are like this, there are many that are not but from the studies I have done there are a good majority that simply have no souls, its just the vessels energy that remains because it didn't desenitigrate.

I Think many reported "Hauntings" are the echo's of strong emotions released in a place, not ness. at the time of death although this is a time when strong emotions could released. the walls or ground around us hold that energy and those of us with a high reception to emotion can pick up on these many years down the line.

Evil or good spirit depends in my veiw. Emotions held at time of death can play a role in my eyes. If someone was murdered, I believe that the spirit could want revenge, or if they died peacfully and just got stuck in the passing of two worlds.

I personally think it's related to the kind of attitude they had, and the way they acted when they were alive. If they were bad people then they'll be bad spirits. Good people, good spirits and so on. That's just my take on it.

I also agree with LadyEunoia to a point, if i was a spirit in a house and someone threw holy water in my face i would be pissed and start acting bad, but if the people left me alone then their would be no problem...

I think perhaps it could be how the lived or how they died especially if it was a violent death. It could also because if the person is under a curse and where the person has to haunt. You'll be much happier haunting Disneyland than you would the Winchester House.

There is alot of reasons why they are good or bad. Depending on how there Life has seem to be for them. Some with there twisted souls make them stay because their way of life. and they need to correct it... im just try to say what many ppl are saying. Going to Correct their wrong doing. But I think only the confused Spirits are the one that stays behind.

I would think in nature to how the spirit had passed on would be the first factor in if it was evil or good. If someone died from a violent beating or torture, gun shot etc... Would think they would be more the evil one.

you will be surprised how many times people think a joker spirit (the things that move your keys to the place u would never find them n other things created by good energy) is evil. because really "normal" people dont feel these things and see somthing moving and get scared and therefor that joker energy is nows an evil spirit.

as for real evil spirits. who knows why. maybe they dont even come from this plane.

i think there is a plethora of things that make a spirit evil. most of it stemming from their life before death. it could range from a bad childhood, being murdered, being a murderer. every aspect of life affects every person even in the after life.

I would think it would be a marking from their deeds in life, they way you acted and they life you lived. I am not sure if the way you were killed or died has anything to do with it

Well, personally I don't really believe in spirits 100%, but that small part of me that does says that it thinks that the spirit is evil or good based on its based life and "unfinished business" cause most spirits can't cross into the next life or what ever you believe happens until they finish their deeds in this world. That's what I think, it may be real or fake, i don't know. I actually think they are semi-real, because I have visualized ghosts or spirits when I was younger, like a medium, I could hear them too. When ever I saw one, the whole room became quiet-esk and I could hear a slight buzzing that alternated in pitch when it moved it's mouth. I still have nightmares of those experiences sometimes. But they only ever occured when I was at someone's house, and only twice at home, but that's it.

I hear a lot of people say good and evil, what exactly makes a spirit evil, i would think if they killed someone for no reason that would make them evil, but if they did something like threw a book or glass or something like that, i do not consider that evil...

I think it all just depends on the type of person they were in there living life and that whatever was more prominent because intensified after death. Whether jealousy, protectiveness, and urge to kill, any of that. It could be they loved someone and died before them and are protective of them, or jealous because they can't have them anymore. Anything can lead a spirit in either direction really.

First; I believe a spirit (or ghost) is a person who is bound to this world because they need to accomplish something, etc!!! I think an evil spirit is technically just what they were like in human form. They do the same things they did when they were living. Most spirits dont even know there dead.. so this just probably shows that they live more their human life!!

I believe that the evil spirits who haunt us were that way in life. They were restless at their death and carried this negative energy with them.

I believe it depends on the life experiences of the spirit, its emotions at the time of death, cause of death and/or reason why they haven't past on... Those are all reasons which can affect how a spirit turns out to be, good or evil.

i dont think spirits are coherent enough to be defined as good or evil....they just ARE, i think if someone claims to have used a spirit that is evil or good, i think it reflects the person who summoned it....not reflecting the spirit it self.

I would guess that they are the same way dead as they were alive...so if someone was kind and happy in life then when they die they are a "good" spirit. It might also have to do with the way they died....

I think a good spirit has been a good loving person from their past life, good spirits are the ones that might have unfinished business with their loved ones are a good passion they had and want to finish it. A evil spirit is a demon, that has been casted out of heaven for rebelling against God, and wonders the earth as a fallen angel, because they have done a lot of bad things in their past life, so they have sins to God and is not welcome to heaven, because God will never forgive a evil spirit, and the evil spirit will be angry with the living, and make peoples lives a misery and causeing supernatural activity in someones home.

There are different types of spirits, it depends on their pastlife. It is quite often that you can find reoccuring spirits that do the same thing over and over again at exactly the same time, this is a spirit that is stuck in the same reality called limbo, because it is someone that is in distress and has unfinished business, so the same event occurs and repeats itself over again, like a cycle. Most spirits go to heaven when their business is finished.

It also could be how they died if it was a violent death .

I think it's a combo of both how they lived and how they died...so if someone was raped and murdered and she lead a very depressive dreary life then maybe she would become an evil spirit.

Evil spirits are simply confused spirits who have stayed here too long. instead of moving on like they are suppose to they hang on to what ever unfinished business they believe needs to be done. the longer they stay the more clouded their reason for staying gets.

It could also be how they died, meaning if they died by being killed or in a fire i mean i would not be a nice spirit, but if they died in their sleep or in a nice way they could turn out to be good spirits...

I think what makes them evil or nice is based on how they died. Do they feel they have a score to repay, if so they will be evil if they dont they will be nice

Well you have to separate what you're talking about first... ghosts or spirits. It's a fine line yes, but there is a difference. Good and evil, however is really in the mind of the beholder. What is evil to you might not be evil to the being in question.

I belive thant an evel spirit is a person who died an early death or some one who got murdered.
An evel spirit was from the behining someone that wasn´t ready to die just yet.

There can be many reason for a spirit to become or be evil. For example a lot of Native Americans believe that when a spirits residence or a scared object holding a spirit is disturbed it will be angry and do harm to others. As in the case of a human soul that is evil it can be due to the life they lead before death or how they died. If they suffer a horrible death they have a tendency to hold on to the anger inside them and lash out.

As being an North American Native my self, my mother often tells me that when you see a spirit, its either because did wrong, or someone hurt the one the spirit loved or such.

Ok. Yes I believe in spirits. But I do not believe that they are good or bad. Those, to me are labels we place on them in attempt to better understand what we cannot. There are several things that we are only beginning to comprehend and then there are others that we have no idea about and cannot fully fathom.
