The Thread about the Lizard Man had me thinking and I did mention PA's very own Swamp Boy.

We know Jersey has a Devil and now you know that PA has a Swamp Boy. Do you know what you've got?
If not, What about your town or area? They have a "Ghost" story?

This one is fairly close to my house. About 10-15 miles away I would say. Its also a fairly short and cliche story haha.

"Long ago a newlywed bride was wearing her wedding dress and riding a white horse. The horse went wild and the woman fell off and she died after her head hit a rock laying on the ground. Today, you can see her riding around on a white horse late at night still in her wedding dress"

around here on this one hwy 126 in So. california thers a myth that on this one side rd off the hwy that once you pass a certain tree at night that a ghost of a women jumps in the back seat of your car. now thats freaky

There are some in Malta but mostly about ghosts,as for the town I live in it's about 2 ghosts.One of a nun the other one of a woman who was murdered by her husband.

Till this day the houses where these sightings happen can't be sold because of people reporting these sightings.

There are many “ghost stories” around my area or sightings of ghost. The one that sticks out in my mind the most would be cry baby bridge. I tried looking it up to find the exact legend, & even under google I found my variations on the story. Supposedly at night you can hear the cries of a baby from the bridge. Some say it was a car wreck, the mom survive & the baby was lost. One of the variations on the story was that the mother tossed the baby into the water below, later returning to jump in herself, neither body ever being found. I went there once, I got unusual feelings from the area, but I can’t say that I heard a baby screaming. Of course the logical thinkers always summed it up to be dogs, cats, bobcats, etc. I’m not sure what it is, but there is definitely an eerie feeling in the air.

I haven't heard of anything that falls into folk lore just the common haunted house and things like that from when I was a kid

Formerly known as the Most Haunted House in America, the home of carpetbagger Charles Wright Congelier, his Mexican wife Lyda, and a young servant girl, Essie, was located at 1129 Ridge Avenue, in the Manchester, North Side, neighborhood of Pittsburgh. The story of its life as a haunted house* begins in the winter of 1871, with Lyda's discovery of Charles having an affair with the maid. Lyda was so enraged, that she fatally stabbed Charles and chopped off Essie's head.
For the next 20 years the house remained vacant. It was remodeled to accommodate railroad workers in 1892, but they soon moved out, claiming to hear the sobbing and screaming of a woman. The Most Haunted House in America once again stood vacant.

Around 1900, Dr. Adolph C. Brunrichter bought the home. "Keeping to himself, the doctor was rarely seen by his neighbors.

Then on August 12, 1901, the family next door heard a terrifying scream from the Brunrichter residence," wrote Richard Winer and Nancy Osborn in their book, Haunted Houses. "When they ran outside to investigate, the neighbors saw a red explosion-like flash shooting through the house. The earth under them trembled, and the sidewalls cracked. Every window in the doctor's home was shattered."
When officials entered the house to investigate, they found a decomposed female body strapped to the bed and five headless young women in basement graves. "Dr. Brunrichter had been experimenting with severed heads," wrote Winer and Osborn. "Apparently he had been able to keep some alive for short periods after decapitation." Dr. Brunrichter, meanwhile, had disappeared, and the house once again stood vacant


As a result of its reputation for being haunted, the house stood empty for several years before undergoing its second remodeling to ready it for housing emigrant Equitable Gas Company workers. These workers experienced many strange occurrences but wrote them off as pranks by the American workers they had replaced (for lower wages). One night things took a tragic turn, however, and two of the workers were found dead in the basement. One had a board driven like a stake through his chest, and the other was hanging from a rafter. These men had both been seen alive just minutes earlier

Some areas of PA are a hotbed for local lore. Berks County has alot. Check out the 3 volumes of Ghost Stories of Berks County by Charles Adams. I know people that have witnessed some of the things he writes about. The worse part is they witnessed it, dismissed it as a figment of their imagination and then read about it in the books.

We've heard tales of 'Devil Dogs' in wreham, about 20 minutes drive from where I live. But this whole area is rife with local ghost stories.

As to be expected in a place called "Eerie, PA" we have our share of ghost stories. From Axe Murder Hollow, to the Erie Cemetery "vampire" masoleum and witches circle, the Mansion where "Mad" Anthony Wayne's remains were boiled to take the flesh off the bone... haunted frat houses and college towers. You name it, we've got it lol

I'm from Eastern PA. Having camped in the Jersey Pine Barrons I can see where the Jersey Devil legend came from. Lots of wierd noises, etc in the woods at night.

I have never heard of the "Swamp Boy". What part of PA does this legend come from? I will have to look it up.

I am from louisiana- the state is filled stories, every diff area seems to have a diff story to it.

We have the Sleeping Giant, which depending on whom you talk to will give you a different story.
We also have the Old Fort which is haunted. As is most of the South end of town because we are built on a reserve.

There is actually a series of books entitled. "Ghost stories of..." then enter the country, state/province etc here. *laughs*

Here's a Canadian Ghost story for ya from the Prairies :) :
My Uncle's house is actually in one of these books. My Uncle bought an old farm once lived in by two elderly people, a husband and wife who raised several generations of children under that roof. After the patriarch and matriarch of the family had passed on the family moved on to the city and sold the land and home to my uncle.

My uncle had decided to go out to the farm, stay a few nights alone seeing what needed to be "fixed up" ect, while his wife stayed in the city. I believe it was the first night that he awoke to the image of a woman standing guard over his bed. Before he could get a good look at her, she vanished.

Now my uncle is not a man to believe in ghosts ect and whoa... heaven forbid you wake him up in the middle of the night for it will not end pretty. He chases after where he thought she had gone and in the process nearly falls down the two flight stair. (Which by the way were in need of repair as well.)

Over the next couple days an nights, convinced he just chased someone out of the house, he takes measurements and the like of what needs to be repaired or completely re done. However, as he's doing so, little things we take for granted begin to occur. His keys are never where he distinctly left them. His coffee cup often ends up in an entirely different room, same with some of his tools and a creepy basement with a draft where there should be none ( being several feet underground.)

After the days he said he'd be gone are done he goes back to town and starts hiring contractors to come in to do the work. Several crews, many tools missing, "falls" from ladders and utter refusals to go into the basement, later. The house is almost finished in time for his sister's wedding.

There is still... the basement. Now again, my uncle is a massive skeptic, he is also a very "built" man and could probably kill ya six different ways before ya hit the ground. My Uncle goes down into the basement and begins doing that work himself. Again, things go missing, the stairs are treacherous, things end up in rooms upstairs. Yet in his searching he can find no cause for the draft but instead finds a chest of old pictures ect from the previous family.

The matriarch of the family was the woman he saw over his bed.

He shakes it off of course, I mean, that's just the type of man he is and takes the photos up to his wife. They both agree to put the pictures of the Matriarch and the patriarch (two separate black and white photo's) up on the wall above the first landing of the stairs he nearly fell down the first night. From then on no keys went missing, no coffee cups moved, no tools in different rooms...

Now. Here's where I come in. For you see I was at my aunt's wedding. I've seen these photos before and after the wedding album came out. But I get ahead of myself.

My Aunt's wedding went off without much of a hitch... except the priest nearly had a heartattack but think that's cause it was his first wedding to perform.

Now... I being well... Me in a new house as a kid*laughs* began snooping around. Perhaps it was just my childhood mind playing tricks on me but everywhere I went I felt like I was being watched and much to my amusement, my drink glass distinctly marked by my scribbling began to appear in almost every second new room I went into. To say nothing of the fact that all the "adults" were outside socializing, mind you I could hear one of my aunts in the kitchen moving around.

Anyways. So. Someone of the bridal party suggest taking a picture of the whole procession on the stairway. Now if you remember correctly, those old stone faced pictures of the previous family were above the first landing. After the whole cup fiasco, I latched on to the photographer and followed him like a hawk cause like *clears throat* I was going to hang around my parents due to some stupid house.

I was standing right beside the photographer when he took the picture of the party on the stairs. I saw these pictures of the Matriarch and Patriarch of the former family being stone faced and looking outward at those in the other room.

Now I know people won't believe me because well, that's the nature of skeptics hehe :) *clears throat*! I don't even believe it and I saw it clear as day. As I was standing beside the photographer, him pausing to put film in. I swear I saw the picture of the woman flicker a moment.

When the photo album came out and I looked at the pictures... The picture of the bridal party on the stair froze me. The picture of the Matriarch up on the wall in the photographer's picture, was not looking out into the other room but was turned slightly looking at the group on the stair with a smile to its lips.

I have not been back in that house since.

Now... My Uncle much to his credit had not joked around about all that happened as he was putting the house together until after the wedding...being the type of man he is... he didn't want to unnecessarily frighten anyone who may have been prone to believe such "supersticious nonsense" in his opinion. I didn't learn about what happened to my Uncle until after I held the photo album and went Wholy *clears throat*

*laughs, smiles* Again I know. I won't be believed but *laughs* its become a family joke that they won't let me live down. :)

Witch

The Yorkshire Witch, Mary Bateman, is one of Leeds' most notorious villains. In 1803 Mary poisoned three people living in a draper's shop near St Peter's Square in Quarry Hill. As soon as they were dead she robbed the house and shop. Six years later she was hanged at York for the murder, by poisoning, of Rebecca Perigo, the wife of a Bramley clothier. Mary's body was dissected in public to raise funds for the Infirmary. Her skeleton is now kept in the Thackery Medical Museum.

My town is horribly boring. I'm smack-dab in the middle of the Bible Belt. The only spook here is...well, me. :) I often wish that there was something interesting here. We have a couple of graves that some say belong to witches, but that's about it. No nifty little stories to go along with it or anything.

Other than the usual big foot legend that seems to be everywhere....we have a haunted old girls school that was used as a Choctaw School after the Trail of Tears migration. There is also a church that was there when founded that is still used today as well as a cemetary. All are haunted....According to the stories about the place the girls that went there would get horrible beatings when in trouble and those that didn't survive it were buried on the grounds....

It's also said that there are lights that are unexplained at night in the church and if a person visits the cemetary at the right time of year and at night then a green lantern light can be seen over a grave...it's said that the grave is that of a witch....

I personally haven't seen the lantern but when I have visited there, and I have several times, I definately feel the presence of spirits there.....it's called Wheelock Academy in OK.

I live in Charleston, South Carolina, and there's a famous theatre downtown called the Dockstreet Theatre. It's supposed to be haunted, but I've been there on multiple occasions and have never felt anything more than a couple of chill spots.

The only Ghosts you usually have in this region are restless spirits who were the victims of hate crimes back before they were illegalized... some even close to current.

I have yet to tell me about that one!

The main one in my area is about the Handprint on the Wall in the old County Jail in Jim Thorpe, PA. There was a thread about it a few months ago. But basically, a person who was convicted of being a Molly Maguire took his hand, placed it in the dirt of the cell, and pressed against the wall, saying that if he was innocent, it would stay there forever. They have tried painting over it, replacing the wall, and it always came back. Some consider it only a local legend to draw in tourists. But I honestly feel it is much more than that. The prison was used up until the late 90s, when the newer one was built. But people have been driven mad and other things when imprisoned in that particular cell when there were the periods of overcrowding. I have been to the prison, have seen it, and fully believe it is real. The entire prison itself gave me a feeling. And I constantly felt like I was being watched when there. Those who have doubt, that is up to you. But I fully believe it is real.

Now that's something I'd love to see. There's just something about the feeling when in the presence of the unknown!

There was a poor girl who went to my High School (years before me) who was bruttally raped and murdered by her School teacher. He offered her a ride home and when they reached Luthersburg Field she ran in fear of him. He chased her down beat her, raped her, and then killed her.

At midnight they say you if you drive up tot he field at night and shut off your car, but leave the headlights on you can see her running in terror across the field.

I am from NJ and the jersy devil was already mentioned. The Jersey devil is from South Jersey.

In North Jersy the most famous one is the legend of clinton rd. The story goes like this.

Clinton Rd.There is said to be the spirit of a little boy which haunts a small stream. If you toss a coin in at midnight he will throw it back. There is the story of the haunted coach that runs the road. There is also a "HellHound" that chases you down if you enter the woods on the side of the road and see it. It is said to travel as fast as your car can go. (Note: Clinton Road is a hot bed for ghosts and other mysterious happenings.).

Well at my husbands home town, there is a legend of a girl that gets a lift home or even catches a taxi cab home. She was killed on by a train on a foggy night. She was trying to warn the driver that there were cattle on the track and was killed. And ever since is constantly been trying to go home.

I found this about Charleston's supposedly haunted inn.

this is an atricle about the Big Muddy Monster. a creature supposedly to romp in the county right above me.

OBSERVED: In the early eighties and late seventies many incidents concerning what could only be classified as an unidentified homonid were reported in the area of Southern Ill. In particular, the area of Jackson Co. and the town of Murphysboro. The sightings also included Carbondale. The (for lack of a better term) "creature" or "creatures were seen, heard, and even smelled for quite a few years. Although sightings have declined or stopped completely there are still plenty of local people who recall the reports as well as the fear they felt during this time.

Although some of the finer points of the reports differ there remain some aspects that coincide. Such as: It seems as though the creature used the river (The Big Muddy River) as its main travel way. Most of the incidents occured either around the river or on the river itself. Perhaps the creature used the river not only as a path but also for water and a possible food supply. And a particular point of interest in this case is the fact that this creature was always accompanied by a foul, sour smell. In fact, most reports have the people actually smelling the creature before seeing it. Also my personal favorite aspect of this group of stories is the fact that although confronted with people many times this creaure never became violent or acted in a hostile manner. The differing aspects of this group of sightings include the color, and size. Some have the color being anywhere from black to brown to reddish. Mostly it was a dirty brownish color and always the hair was matted with mud and plant material no matter the color. Size was estimated from 4 foot to the incredible size of 7 foot tall and weighing somewhere between 120 up to 300 lbs. Most have the creature being the size of a big boned man around 6 foot 4. Even though there were never creatures or even a family group could help explain the many different sizes and colors of the creature. Along with the different light settings and the distances from the creature to the veiwer. Also, as with anything people can't see or understand or fear they will make fun and make up their own stories as a joke.

Since the sightings always seemed to originate around the vicinity of the Big Muddy River, the creature was quickly dubbed "The Big Muddy Monster" (I worked in a screen printing shop for a while and even years after the sightings we still made Big Muddy Monster T-shirts for the local retailers!). Supposedly, there is at least one article in one of the local papers about all the sightings and an actual warning for those going around the river. I have not seen this yet. I have just started looking, but too many people remember it for it not to be true.The most prolific sighter was an older man who owned a junkyard close to the river. This man was not only the most frequent veiwer but also as far asI can tell the first to encounter the creature first hand. It seems that the man was smelling something rotton in the junkyard and while searching for the smell made the first sighting of the creature. The man became quite used to the creature being there. And after several reports were made and no follow ups on the reports by local authorities the man just co-existed with the creature. Just staying out of the junkyard when he smelled that smell. He also told of many vocalizations ranging from the grunt up to a howl hitting all points in between.

Another main story that was repeated over and over was about two men racoon hunting in the river bottoms. It seems as though the hunters dogs got on the trail of the creature and tracked it to an old barn in a field in the bottoms. The men, although armed with small caliber rifles, decide not to gointo the barn when they heard low pitched growling. They said they have been in the woods for years and had never heard anything like that before. One of the men tried to get his dogto go in and it refused so he picked it up and threw it into the open door of the barn. The man said that the dog barely had time to hit the ground when a high pithed shreik rang out and the dog bolted for the cover of the woods with the men close behind running for their truck. With sunrise and another dose of courage and more friends and weapons the hunters returned to the barn to find nothing but foot prints that followed them to the edge of the road where their truck had been the night before. Maybe for an instant the hunters became the hunted.

I realize that with all stories the myths and legends grow. The fish that gets away gets bigger and the monster always gets scarier. I've tried to tell the stories as I've heard them. In this small little town you'll find those who believe as well as those who don't. But those who have seen ... have seen. I believe!

i know this area has the big muddy monster and bigfoot... but both of them are close to the same just differently named lol

we have an insane Assylum. it would take me 3 days of typing to tell all that i have seen there. there are devil dogs that growl and chace you on the grounds. the boiler kicks on with no power to the place. I've seen children and an old lady..

There's a haunted house in this town said to be haunted by the ghost of Hessian mercenaries from the American Revolution. And then there's the Moth Man from Ohio and West Virginia.

to the one above do tell more about the haunted house I'm quite curious. I love ghost tales and superstitions.

There are some local varaeties of ghost stories in MD, but my favorite story is not of a ghost but when I was in Saudi Arabia, they had a story of Djinns (sp?) that would steal babies from the tents of the bedouin if you didn't leave a torch outside the opening. I think that you had to leave some kind of offering too, don't remember. It was a long time ago (first gulf war period.

I grew up in and around Murphysboro in Southern Illinois, and I was going to mention the Big Muddy Monster, but the very knowledgeable Gruesome T has already covered that in wonderful detail.
He knows much more about the legend than I do.

I have one close relative who insists he has encountered the Big Muddy Monster, at night, and it scared the [insert favorite expletive or descriptive term here] out of him.

In general, Europeans settled in the southern regions of Illinois earlier than the other regions of the state; so one tends to find older towns, with plenty of old haunted houses. The region is also more remote, with heavily forested hill country, and plenty of room for strange creatures of the night to wander. For instance, we have bobcats; beautiful animals, but they can let out a bloodcurling catcall. If you heard one at night and did not know what it was, it would scare the [insert favorite expletive or descriptive term here] out of you.

I have often wondered whether some of the Big Muddy Monster sitings may have been encounters with an unusual animal or creature that is just very rare and has not made its way into the normal biological/zoological classifications.

i've got an old mental asylum probably 10 mile drive from my house... supposedly you can see people hanging in the rafters of one of the old falling down towers.

there's also a tree just up the street from my house that looks normal at day but in the moonlight it looks dead even in summer, and i can see dozens of corpses in it... but i haven't heard anything of the sorts in this area.

we here in pa have alot to see as far as ghosts and stuff just gotta know where to look he he which is very cool gotta go do some ghost hunting.

We have a legend here about Hepler's Pond. Supposedly he went nuts when he came home from work and found his wife and daughter murdered. He hung himself in this big oak tree outside his house. When you drive down his dirt road you can see him walking on the lake...if he catches you on his property he will kill you taking his revenge. I guess there have been a number of unexplained deaths out there. So thats our little legend.

When i was liviing in England, we had a hotel in out town that apparently was haunted by a late night watch man....he'd been poisoned by accident and died in the broom cupboard.

On the grounds of the County Nursing Home there is a cemetary and an old asylum. The building has long since been closed but it is said there are many strange happenings that go on in the building and on the grounds. Maintenance workers won't even go into the building because they say they've seen ghosts and other strange things.

i think Mississippi is too boring to have local lore

in pa where I live there are alot of local haunted places such as the local hospital to a football field where a girl was raped and I do believe killed

Interesting thread..Nice to read all the posts...I'm sorry i have no such story to offer.I live in India..There are millions of such claims and 95% of them are based on silly superstitions...

I live in S. Wales (U.K) and there are plenty of stories about local characters through history mostly with fighting the English all the time and of course the King Arthur & Merlin story was supposed to have started about 20 miles from where i live in a place called Carmarthen (that's the english name).

The only ghostly thing i can rejmeber of the top of my head is a tale my Dad told me a few years ago about two ghosts/spirts were seen running down the High Street in Swansea City centre by a load of people and disappearing into the graveyard of a local city centre church. This was supposed to have happened in the '60's, my Dad said it made the local papers as well!!

Battlefields of Gettysburg

There are many reports from civilians and experts on the ghostly phenomena that have occurred on the Battlefields. Devil’s Den and the areas around it are reported to be the most haunted locations on the battlefield. In Devil's Den more ghosts have been reported of slain soldiers than in any other location in Gettysburg. It is in the nearby Triangular Field where electronic equipment and cameras are said to seldom work. In the Valley of Death apparitions of soldiers are frequently reported.
These private homes on the Battlefield are reported as haunted: The Hummelbaugh House, where the stories say the cries of Confederate Brigadier General William Barksdale can still be heard on certain nights. George Weikert House has a door on the second floor which refuses to stay closed, no matter what one does to it.

Well I know of many different ghost stories around where I live. There is one about this woman who was driving late at night with her baby and had an accident and went over the bridge and died, along with the baby. It is said that late at night if you stop at the bridge you will hear or see the woman looking for her baby.



Where I live now, was once the home for many indian tribes. In some parts of the woods, late at night, you can supposively hear them chanting while doing rituals. I have yet to hear them, but I do look forward to it.

down off of this main road that used to have farmland on it was a family of like 5 i think. the dad killed all 3 of his children and then beat his wife into a bloody pulp then shot his self. people say you can see him waiting at the end of the road so he can get you next...

At the university I attend NSU there is said to be a young woman by the name of Isabella that haunts the place. I can't remember how the story went exactly... but I know it was either she died in a horrible fire or her beloved did. Where there once stood four columns now only three stand, due to the fire that happened so many years ago. It is said that she haunts the oncampus dorms, apartments, school hallways, etc. I haven't seen her, but I wouldn't doubt it a bit that there is "something or better yet someone" there.

I've had many things all of a sudden turn on in my apt while i was the only one there. My doors open by themselves... etc. Well, they did I don't attend school there anymore... but while I did quite a few things like that took place. I just embraced the fact that maybe there was something/someone there with me. Believe if you want...

ok there are a few from my old home town of Victoria Texas
Victoria - Cinema 4, Salem 6, Playhouse 4 - At Cinema 4 there is a ghost woman that watches the workers clean. She is very playful and likes to call you name. While looking down they have seen a little boy run up to the concession stand and when you look up no one it there. At all the theatres everyone has seen trash cans roll up ramps and cold spots through out the buildings. The ghost only seems to mess with you if there is nothing "fun" going on.

Victoria - Old army barracks by the Airport - a shadow of a little boy with a basket ball saying "come play with me" has been reported. - October 2007 Additional information: Footsteps, voices, and strange red glowing lights have also been reported.

Victoria - Tanglewood Townhouses - Some have reported things moving all by themselves, lights going on and off, things flying through mid air, and temperature drops and chills once in these houses.

Victoria - Hopkin's Park - In the 90's a lady was decapitated by her boyfriend on the slide of the playground at Hopkin's Park. Those who live close to the park have reported seeing two figures walking around.

Victoria - Regency Apartments - the regency apartments which is behind Rosewood funeral home is haunted. Reports of voices and footsteps reported.

Victoria - Victoria County Courthouse - many construction workers claimed to have seen moving flashes of light out of the corner of their eye. Some of the same construction workers and many courthouse employees have claimed to see "floating balls of light"-orbs and an apparition that appears periodically on the second floor in the SE corner of the building.

Goliad - Mission Espiritu De Santo - Reports of Seeing an apparition of an Indian on horse back, hearing the sounds for drums and the smell of pipe smoke. There have also been reports of a phantom wolf that runs in the woods & disappears.

Goliad - Presidio La Bahia - This is an Old Spanish mission dating from the 1700s. It is reportedly extremely haunted, due to the many Texan revolutionaries executed there by general and President of Mexico, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna on Palm Sunday, 1836. Among other phenomenon is a very short priest that roams the chapel yard, a cold, misty area in one corner, moans and sighs heard throughout the main yard, and a lady who is often seen praying in the chapel. Here in New Zealand we have the 'Taniwha' lol. It's pronounced ta-nee-faa and is supposed to be some sort of monster, it's a legendary Maori creature.

well we are alittle town but in our graveyard woodlawn cemertary we have a big circle with umm a pentagram in it and we have heard stories from local people that a long time ago their was satanic ritural going on their and to this same day people go to that and often feel eerie feelings and some have also seem a shawdow figure their sometimes to.

I would love to visit these places and check them out....

I live in Virginia Beach, and for a resort town it actually has it's fair share of ghost stories because of all the witch trials that used to take place in the area and the Plantation houses that have managed to keep standing.

Down by the beach there is a 'Ghost Walk' I've never been on, but it's supposed to take you around all the haunted areas around the beach...

Ferry Plantation is supposed to be haunted by an alleged witch who was drowned in the river near by.

I've heard rumours of the Cavalier Hotel being haunted by loads of ghosts, and there have been sightings around the Old Coast Guard Station as well.

Then they say Blackbeard walks the board walk at night...

There are whole books on it, like "Ghosts, Witches, & Weird Tales of Virginia Beach"

theres many stories in my small town. one from my school that was build around an old house and was the math department. but this one is just out of my town. this is about a small lake.
if you go to this lake at sunset and sit there till midnight on a full moon a beautiful woman will come to you and seduce you till your deep in the water then drownd you and if you look up at her through the water as she holds you down you will see a corps. this is a story i heard who knows if its true.

i am from southern california and there are many stories here

the whaley house in old town san diego is one it is said the whole family is there still and one of the little girls friends too. there are sounds and smells that just cant be explained as it is a museum now

also the hotel del coronado has at least 6 that i have felt roaming around the grounds and beach near by

I live in the Greater New Orleans area. Nice to see Louisiana making such a nice showing with old lore. I best remember my Cajun grandparents who lived in Pointe-a-la-Hache, Louisiana scaring us at night or if we were bad, "the Loup Garou gonna get you."

It's a fun legend to research, often mixing vampire and werewolf characteristics.

Important tip: If you want to get away from the Loup Garou (and my grandparents prounounced it Roo Garoo) simply hang a collander at the door and run like hell! He is compelled to count all the holes before he can make chase. Keep the gar gassed or your pirogue at the ready! If I have to have a spooky guy chasing me, give me the OCD ones any night!!!

I like to mention this one because it is such a big attraction all year round especially on Halloween night. Even tourist are starting to hear about this and make it out to the tracks.

this is a place that was set for an investigation, in which there are alot of people on this site that are interested in knowing about this place. it is haunted by many many ghosts. in fact it is said that no one is able to stay one night in this place due to the spirits. and its only an hour or a little less drive from where i live...

Hickory Hill was built by a man named John Hart Crenshaw and became a blight on the history of Illinois. In those days, it was illegal to own slaves in Illinois but because no man would work the brutal salt mines of Saline County, it was allowed that slaves could be leased from other states to work. Crenshaw owned several salt tracts and quickly took advantage of the law.
He built Hickory Hill in 1842 and began a new scheme that would bring him even more money than the salt mines could. He devised a plan to kidnap free blacks and put them to work in the salt mines. He also sold these people back to slave owners in the south, creating a sort of reverse "underground railroad."

Once the house was completed, Crenshaw added a few finishing touches like a carriage door that opened directly into the house so that slaves could be taken up a secret passage directly to the attic. In was in the attic that the slaves were imprisoned during the night and some say, subjected to brutal torture. According to the stories, there was also an underground tunnel that led from the basement to the river, where slaves could be loaded at night.

Crenshaw devised another plan, this one to create slaves of his own. He selected a slave for his size and stamina and set him to breeding more slaves with the females that could bear children. This man, known simply as "Uncle Bob" was said to have fathered as many as 300 children. He lived until the age of 112 and died in 1948.

The attic at Hickory Hill was a chamber of horrors. A dozen cells opened off a wide corridor. They were small rooms with bars on the windows and with iron rings where shackles could be bolted to the floor. The attic had only a small window at either end, so the air was stifling. A whipping post was also constantly in use and many of the valuable slaves were said to have died at the cruel hands of Crenshaw and his men.

In 1842, Crenshaw was brought to trial for selling a free family into slavery. The case could not be proven until after the trial and by then it was too late. The prosecutor would try again in 1846, the same year that one of Crenshaw's slaves attacked him with an ax, severing his leg. His slave trade days were over and his mill was burned to the ground. He died in 1871 and he and his wife were buried at Hickory Hill Cemetery.

Many years later, the house was opened as a tourist attraction and it was no secret that strange things were going on in the house. Tourist were reporting hearing strange noises coming from the attic. . .noises that sounded like cries and whimpers, and even rattling chains.

The legends say that on one could ever spend the night in the attic of the house, especially after an event in the 1920's that got the attention of ghost researchers all over the country. An "exorcist" from Benton, Illinois named Hickman Whittington wrote an article about the house in a local newspaper. He was in perfect health when he came to visit the old mansion but took ill later than same night and died just hours later.

As the years passed, no one dared to spend the night in the room. In the late 1960's, two soldiers who had seen action in Vietnam ran screaming from the house after being surrounded by ghostly shapes. A year or so later, the owner stopped letting people in the house after dark. A small fire had accidentally been started by a lantern.

In 1978, he finally relented and a reporter from Harrisburg named David Rodgers was allowed to spend the night. Despite hearing a lot of strange noises, he managed to beat out 150 previous challengers to become the first to brave the night in the former slave quarters.

Today, the Old Slave House has been closed down. Because of poor health, the owner, Mr. George Sisk, cannot continue the operation of the house. He tried to get the state of Illinois to step in and take over the location but negotiations are still at a stand still. The house was closed down at the end of 1996, possibly never to reopen.

A few years ago, I asked Mr. Sisk if he believes that the house is haunted. He told me that he never goes to the attic and if he does for some reason, he leaves as soon as possible. He has never encountered a ghost in the house. . .but his wife hasn't been so lucky. She refuses to set foot in the former slave quarters

In the eastern state of West Virginia, there lies the town of Flatwoods. Flatwoods, West Virginia is just like any other town...That is if you exclude the events on September 12, 1952.
That day in September is definitely a memorable one to the locals of Flatwoods. Just as the New Jersey Devil is to New Jersey and as the Dover Demon is to Dover.
On the afternoon of September 12th, Sheriff Carr and his deputy Long were given a report of an object falling to earth. Not long afterwards, a similar report was given by local school students. However it was the night of this where the most interest lies.
Shortly before the sunset, four boys saw an object fall on a hill. Bringing an adult named Kathleen May and her two boys along, they journeyed up the hill. What they found was quite interesting. Twas’ a large sphere-like object which was reported to have a diameter of about ten feet. Now, afterdark, two lights suddenly shone from a distance. One of the members of the group directed his flashlights towards the two lights. However these were not just any lights...they were eyes! They were the eyes of a creature about ten feet in height. The eye witnesses described it as having, “a bright red face, bright green clothing, a head which resembled the ace of spades, and clothing which, from the waist down, hung in great folds”. Shortly after the creature realized it had been sited, it began to hover towards the witnesses. The group then retreated.
Mrs. May called Sheriff Carr while the four friends called their “buds”. Even later that night, the original group, the sheriff, the kids’ friends, a giant mob of locals climbed the hill to see what has been reported. However nothing mysterious was found. All that was mysterious was that of a peculiar odor.
The next day, “two parallel skidmarks and a circle of flattened grass” was discovered. Unopened-minded authorities tried to explain it as being that of a comet or meteor and nothing else. And that the so called creature was just an animal wrongfully identified. These are absurd solutions which do not solve many factors of the event. These include the fact that a meteor or comet crater would be clearly visible in the night. Also, there are no known species of a land animals that are ten feet tall, stand on two legs, and that also on top of that has a red face.
Beginning the next night, other sightings were reported. A mother and daughter claimed to have spotted the creature not many miles from the hill. A non-resident of Flatwoods reported seeing a “bright orange object” hovering over Flatwoods. There was one more couple who reported an observation of unusual objects overhead Flatwoods, and also reported seeing the monster. Many investigators looked into this incident such as the famous John Keel (author of the Mothman Prophecies). A "festival" was recently held for the 50th year anniversary of the event. Though it has been exactly fifty years since this event the people of Flatwoods have never solved the mysteries of September 12th, 1952
