What is your interpretation of EVIL?
many think it's something that you DO! like killing! and others think it's way of explaning bad things (the Devil made me do it) But what is it to you. what are the traits that it posses (why would you call somthing evil?) what makes it evil? what ever that (it) may be!
to me evil is something a person dose on there own free will, using the excuss the devil made me do it is more of a christioan thing to excuse there bad behaviore, so they do not have to take charge of there bad behaviore
I agree..Evil is something that one does and is very aware of the consequences or damage it will cause.Saying the devil made me do it..that has always been just an excuse to get away with what you know was wrong to begin with.
The problem with good and bad/evil is that they are relative. A definition of evil could be something that transgresses the norms of the society in which it takes place. However, some acts become crimes at different ages in different countries and in an increasingly interconnected world the definition of what fits into a culture is becoming increeasingly blurred
Evil is an intention like any other damn thing.
Intentions depend on the interest, and interest is deciding its nature.
Evil can easily be interpreted as the act of commiting any kind of harm to any person or even to yourself and being FULLY aware of the consequences that can be taken against you.
An act of taking one's life, inflicting serious bodily harm, or even taking a child's innocence from them are a few examples of one's evilness.
Consequences are being Felt thanks to Selfidentification, I am not self indentified, so I dont feel evil.
Just like nothing good can ever be perfect, I beleieve that nothing bad can ever be EVIL. Something either IS or ISN'T, tat doesn't make it anything, especially evil. Granted, if you do something malicious to another person, you will be avenged for it.
I think that the closest thing to real evil that we would ever know in our lives is a true sociopath. Someone like Jeffrey Dahmer maybe. I don't know that pure evil could exist in human form but a true sociopath might be close.
Is there really EVIL or is it just an opposite reaction to fairness. But sometimes fairness is felt as being unfair in given situations.
If there is really a terminology as GOOD & EVIL, then within each there is both depending upon the circumstances.
If a person broke the nose of a young and handsome boy, it would disfigure that young boy for life. The action, possibly not being understood may be looked upon as evil. But if the boy grew up to be so full of himself because of his good looks his actions as a young adult may have been adverse to his parents as well as himself. Therefor the broken nose no longer had him looking in mirrors and admiring himself beyond reason.
If a person crossed a river with a boat loaned by a poor fisherman whose only livelyhood was fishing from that boat, and that person, once arriving on the other side of lets say a huge lake, sunk the boat.....is that evil? What if a group of men arriving at the fishermans house were ill intent to raid a village on the otherside of the river and they had counted on using that fishermans boat....they could not now and the village was spared (The needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few scenario)
Some of you may know and understand where I took these siimiltudes from.....but in asking yourself.....is there a balance between what some call EVIL and what some call GOOD.
Is it EVIL to torture as in the SAW movies....or is it a Twisted mind that doesn't know the difference between the two?
Well what if the are 5 guys in hospital guy 1 needs a kidney transplant to live.......guy 2 needs a heart to live........guy 3 needs a lung to live and guy 4 needs a liver.
guy 5 is healthy would it be evil to kill guy 5 the healthy one so 4 would survive or let him live and 4 would die?..........
I think evil means different things to different people,, i mean one person could think that killing is evil and another person will think killing is good, i think that evil can be good and bad it just depends on what the circumstances are at the time...
Evil is in the eye of the beholder. Evil to one may be perfectly acceptable to another. Personally, I believe that malicious intent is what defines an evil act.
I think it's an action and everybody's perception of EVIL is going to be different based on their level of consciousness.
I agree with several response already written. I think evil is a cultural thing, what is accepted as evil. Also, I believe in order for one to see or believe in evil, they must be bound to accepting a duality.
to me evil is something everyone has in life kinda like a yin-yang cant have good without a little evil and can't have evil without a little good.
As mentioned already, evil is acts of hurt, pain and destruction, be it physical or emotional
I found that it is always easier for people to blame someone else! To me Evill is as beauty in the eye of the beholder...
I have found this to be a more difficult question than at first I thought.
On the whole I think I would agree with MiakodaWolf
Evil is in the heart of the one who is deeming it so. If something feels evil to me..it might not to another. I have a very low threshold for evil whereas someone else may see something I deem as evil as just fine.
who really knows what Evil is. no-one can explain it if they tried. like the colour black you cant make it it just is. you cant have good without bad and who knows maybe good is bad and bad is good we do not know only in our opinion and there are 7 billion different people in the world and growing....so instead starting this thread just because you dont know what it is, ask what is evil to you.
I agree with those who say truly evil people do not take personal accountablitly for their actions. They think they have the right to behave the way they do whether they lay the blame on a higher power or what others have done to them.
An evil person has no remorse for their actions. Hurting others does not bother them and their treatment of others is always justified. They can normally switch it around and make others look evil. If someone calls another evil, chances are they may be covering up their own faults. Unless the person they are calling evil is obviously doing some major bad things, then the one pointing the finger may be the bad one.
to me evil is those sickos that rape, murder and take our children.
evil to me is something that is done with out feeling anything regreatfull inyour heart weather it is to ppl or animals
You have a Law of Relativity that many need to follow. Man and woman, day and night, hot and cold, and what you believe to be good and bad. These are all realized by your five physical senses and they become interpreted by your reasoning of mind. It is possible to eradicate evil tendencies by doing service to your true self. The duality will be removed and you will be neutral in your thoughts. When this service is ignored and the pleasures of the flesh are serviced instead - this is evil.
For a basic: If something disturbs the peace of your heart.....don't do it....
But there are those who have what some term....no hearts...or heartless...so what they do, to them it isn't evil, simply a normal reaction to their nature.
Besides tha lame reply of "evil is a as evil does" you mean?
I imagine it is anything that is contrary to what you believe to be just and right. At least that is what I see evil as.
Example of evil in action: A person who abuses anyone who cannot defend him/herself=evil in my book.
Or being drawn to something that is obviously wrong for you and giving into that is more than likely evil.
Example: You know that smoking will eventually kill you, yet you give into peer pressure. You have committed evil against your own body and morals.
I think many people get confused because they think that situations dictate your actions according to how evil or good things appear to be.
Without getting into a fecal olympics, it is my opinioon that everything can be reduced to good or evil accordin to your own moral compass. That compass can be influenced by many things and ultimately you hold yourself accountable to your own code of right or wrong.
Either that or you just get hung by others moral rope...
Disclaimer: I am not being judgemental with this, just making an observation with MY moral compass.

in my opinion is something that move a person to do something bad or wrong...
something that makes you not to be good.
i don´t think that is forced by someone ... it´s inside of all of us.
i think evil is a state of mind it not what you do its how you present your self
Evil is when my wife/sub discovers she's not getting off the hook during this particular upcoming session adn hisses .. "you're just EEevil Meanie man."
LMAO
~ Wolf
And just to add..
Yes, I've already told her about it just to get her to think on it and build up the anticipation of performing it.
Muwhahaaa.!!.

To me, evil is just a term that can be used to describe anything negative. Pretty simple.
Well evil, like sin, is really just relative to your standards and state of mind.
However, evil as in evil manifestation or just the feeling of evil..It's cold, and almost apathetic. Not sadistic as some people would think, just not caring, emotionless...Neutral, morelike.
Evil is having the intent to do harm. Doing harm in protection of self or others is not evil.
I think EVIL, is passed on from one person to another. All criminals at one time or another were innosent, but chose the Evil path in life.
I belive that everyone stands at that pathway at some point in their lives and maybe on more then one point. They chose which way, whick path to take.
Just like others have stated, Evil is different from person to person. We all use the word evil in different ways to express things- 'That person has evil eye's' ' That music is evil' ' The devil is pure evil'
Evil is any conscience action that breaks social & personal moral codes. In my experience, most people in a society no matter how different they are can agree that certain acts are not acceptable in their community. Thus anything that grossly deviates from these standards is deemed evil. Obviously there will always be a few subjects that people can't agree on due to differences of opinion & lifestyle.
Please excuse any typos or parts when I don't make sense I've been working for fourteen hours today & am very sleepy.
i always thought that evil was things that people do that was wrong or bad like killing or stealing ect.
There are a lot of evil people we've heard of in the past that had no conscious knowledge that they were evil. So, how can it be a conscious act?
I honestly believe that 'evil' is a state of being and has nothing to do with conscious or unconscious acts and/or knowledge of the fact.
Evil is a Generic Term as is the Word Good... Evil Catagorizes many things its in The behavior and actions and mental thoughts and Verbal exchanges.. Can also be in a look showing a negative Expression..Something Dark and usuallly Angry... This also then can pertain to Dress usually being that of Dark nature and Color when it comes to dress as with Evil the Color most known would be Black {my favorite} where also GOod would be White...So Anything that goes against what is right to do what is against Moral Ethics and Codes.. what is against the Common Laws .. and shows a side to society that is Negative and Hostile would be labelled as Evil
I am sure I am paraphrasing a bit, I don't remember the exact quote, but someone once said, "God protect us from the things men will do in the name of good."
Evil isn't the private domain of dark forces, it is inherent in the universe.
That said, evil is different for all people and creatures. Depending upon who or what you are evil can be a shadow, but it is the dark force outside whatever particular code you subscribe to. But as has been stated before, it is intentional and premeditated, it is something done for it's own sake with a total disregard of others. A rabid dog is not evil, it is sick. A human who chooses to abuse children is evil. Okay, my opinion, but I am responding to my code just as we all do.
evil is the darkness in someone heart even though they maybe good and believe in GOD but that darkness in everyone heart is still the evil that that corupts man to do the thing it does
someting someone does of their own free will for the wrong reasons
well said violaquin, Evil is a act done consciencly that the evildoer knows will cause harm to the person/society and fully understands the consequences of that action.
P.S sorry about the typo error there, been a long day:) There is properbly a lot more to this question but i'm too tired to think about it fully
For me, evil is knowingly doing harm to others. To know your actions will cause harm and doing it anyway without care to how they effect others.
Pure state of mind.
If I kill some one im an evil murderer
If I kill Hitler im good saving the world
If I killed loads of people im a mass murderer and evil
If im in a convoy and the mine went off and fought my way out of the ambush im given a medal
Perception only.
Alister Crowley evil? Or good. All his magic involved angels controlling daemons.
Solomon a king who did the same good or evil?
Perception and paradigms.
religion is the root of evil
Religion has been proven by science to be wrong yet man still kills in it’s name.
Kids are branded by there parents religion .. not politics but religion they are?
The world is rising against each other in the name of religion again and again…. That I believe is the cause of evil in this world
it's like a virus
The virus of religion
It is passed down from parent to child through generations.
Children are pre designed to learn from elders and so believe what there told.
Even if it’s nonsense they are programmed to believe and thus pass it on and so religion keeps going.
Warped perception of life.
Only a strong pillof rational thinking will cure this sickness.
I belive
quote
“Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it, you'd have good people doing good things and evil people doing bad things, but for good people to do bad things, it takes religion.”
given the current subject I find it rather funny that EVIL and LIVE are mirror reflections of one another.
I believe there are demons from hell making people do the very bad things.
in my mind eave is a point of vew this debat could go on forever what may be evle to you may not be to me
well evil as everyone sees it is basically bad...
i may not say otherwise. just that evil balances the good, it is something you call someone whom you hates and evil is a complex word that is often used as a cliche that it lost its meaning
what a great question. I like reading the different perceptions we all have. I agree with a lot of what was all ready said. To elaborate... I personally think evil can come in many different forms such as energies, ghosts etc... or even people can be evil (murderers, sociopaths... even though that isn't always considered evil)
I wouldn't say sociopaths are evil.
If you have a sociopathic serial killer, and a sadistic serial killer I would definitely say that the sadistic killer is higher on the evil scale.
Or the sadist is evil, and sociopath just does evil actions.
The difference is that the sadist takes joy out of killing, and sociopath feels nothing.
Well Kathryynkrypt
Conceder this statement “never has a man killed with such joy and will than in the name of his god”
I wouldn't say that's actually taking joy in the killing, but taking joy in the willingness to comply and oblige with the orders their god gives.
But what does that have to do with what I said? lol
I believe that both GOOD and EVIL are interpreted by the person whom the act is done against or for. One person may think that one thing is EVIL and another may think it is fine, and vice versa.
Pure evil, I do not believe could ever exist, due to the fact that somewhere, someone will not have any issues with whatever was done.
sociopaths aren't evil? i disagree . a psychopath might kill people for pleasure, but a sociopath will cause death or suffering just to further their own aims. like a hospital administrator who lets people die just to save money, then takes a golden handshake just before the shit hits the fan. or a politician who encourages greed and then uses the poorest members of society as a scapegoat when everything goes wrong. or someone who incites hatred and gets other people to do bad things by convincing them that it is actually a good thing - just so they can gain power and influence. these sociopaths destroy the fabric of civilisation for their own selfishness, and dont feel the slightest pangs of guilt. that is true evil.
there is no difference between good and evil it's how you use your power
I believe " Evil" is nothing more than the churches way of telling people that they need to conform. "Good" and "Evil" are strictly opinions. Each of us have our own set of morals and values, these determine what we view as "Good" and "Evil". Is it "Evil" to kill someone? What if it were out of self defense? What if we were at war? Killing is killing. Irregardless of the reason, a life has been taken. Does this mean that people who have fought for our country are "Evil"?
What about the mother hat killed someone to save her child?
Granted, some people are more malicious about how they kill, but the person they killed is no less dead than who the mother or soldier killed.
i think evil is when a person kills for no reason, steals, lies, cheats ect, and good to me would be the oppisite.
You want to know EVIL? Come to my dungeon and I'll show you, and maybe you can try to understand.
ah - spoken like a true nutter. sorry, you arent evil - just mentally ill.
The Words GOOD and EVIL are perceptions. They ARE NOT a way of life. They ARE NOT a way of being. A Perception is how someone may see another persons words, actions or thoughts. What I may perceive as GOOD (a room full of sexy nude women), others surely think it to be EVIL and vice versa. Not everyone has the same perceptions.
Well, if we look at this from an atheist/agnostic point of view, "evil" doesn't exist. In the same vein, neither does "good", or even in between. Morality would be something that is made in the minds of men and women. You can't pull a thing like "justice" out of the air, or find it on a street-corner selling coke to children. These are abstract, intangible concepts, the definitions of which are as diverse as all the people in the world.
So, that said...why do most of us have such moral centers, even those of us who enjoy rape and murder? You can't have a reformed criminal without an understanding of morality and feelings of guilt. Could it be an evolutionary thing, that had we not developed a sense of morality, we simply would have killed eachother off by now?
Um, that wasn't the original question, was it.
What I meant to say was...
My definition of evil is less than five hours of sleep.
Shudder.
evil to me is something that is done amorally like rape etc and it isnt controlled by the devil we do it ourselves and are in complete control when we do it.
Some would see Vlad as evil especially by the standards of today. And yet he was a warrior, a patriot, a hero of his people who did what he had to do and made his point. (No pun intended, but certainly recognised). He was not a sociopath. Hitler and Stalin, on the other hand were. And sometimes, as Karnstein pointed out they can be more subtle but no less evil. He was right on the money.
Are you sure Vlad wasn't a sociopath? This is the same guy who ate his dinner while watching people die slowly on stakes. Right?
Hmmmm.....doctors. ;) Although "sociopath" is also one of those intangible concepts.
Vlad did what he did to protect his country and his people. Did he regret it, no, but his purpose was pure though his methods might night have been. Was William Wallace evil, or Geronimo? No, nor were they sociopaths, but they were willing to do whatever needed to be done. They recognised that there is no such thing as a "polite" or "politically correct war." The most effective way to win a war is through fear. It isn't the soldiers you kill that wins a war, it is the civilians. Strike fear in the heart of the populace and they will demand the retreat of their own soldiers.
its a choice to be made. whether behavior or people or whatever it has to be a choice first. you have to believe in evil to see it and so forth
*sighs*
Okay I have to come back to this one.
Even though all of these concepts of "good" and "evil" and "justice" or "injustice" and, yeah, "sociopath", are all intangibles, they work together. They do not physically exist, but they exist in our minds, much in the way that our opinions exist...even what defines our Self exists in this manner. To say that good, evil, sociopath does not exist would be to say that opinion does not exist, and without opinion, how do you define yourself? How do you define good or evil?
This is coming from someone who is borderline sociopathic herself. "Sociopath" works as a definition of one who does not fully operate, or operate at all, based on a sense of good and evil, or, at its core, a sense of other people as...well...mattering.
i believe u will judge by what u do to others not what u do to urself, but i dont think i will call myself an evil person when i take revenge.thats why i dont hit first coz that is evil and no devil comes in u to hit first.what if u hit first and the other person's power out come u? so evil stands on its own when people look for it not devil pushing u.coz devil didnt push u to stab urself up
As for Vlad the Implaler and other such historical figures, the thing I'm trying to say is that you can't say that they for sure weren't sociopaths. Simply because they did something good for their country (and yes, actually, Hitler pulled Germany up off its knees after the first World War. He gave the German people food, jobs, and most importantly, hope. Does this cancel out the Holocaust, make him a hero, make him...not an evil person?), does not mean they were not, at the same time, possibly sociopathic.
to be precise, a sociopath is one who is completely incapable of empathy. i dont mean sensing what someone else is feeling, but by empathy i mean the ability to imagine how someone else feels or relate to them in any way.
a child is god. everything and everyone around a child is there for their benefit, and are just toys or objects there to serve them. healthy humans grow beyond this stage, but a sociopath never does that - they are stuck with the child's point of view.
Arunima: Don't completely agree, but I must concede you do make an excellent argument. Thou art an artist at debate.
Thank you. *grin*
May I ask why you disagree?
And thank you, dictionary.com;
so·ci·o·path
a person, as a psychopathic personality, whose behavior is antisocial and who lacks a sense of moral responsibility or social conscience.
I am not a children. *grin* But then again...I am only borderline.
I disagree for two reasons, both personal rather than rational, which is why I concede the debate to you. I like the image of Vlad as a hero because of the way history has treated him, and because I enjoy a good argument no matter which side I have to take. Juvenile, perhaps, but, what the Hell.
there is a difference between sociopathic and being blinded by hatred. As a young man, Vlad Dracul had been tortured by the people he was later to wreak his wrath. Hitler too had reason to hate his victims. Hitler was an idealist and artist at heart, but driven insane by disease and hatred. it is said he was also tortured by guilt for what he felt necessary to do, so though misguided, i would not say these people were necessarily evil or sociopathic.
thatcher, on the other hand is another case entirely. not sure if she was evil or just sociopathic. i'm not sure there is a difference.
Evil is subjective and is dependent upon an individual's perception and circumstances. I have been called evil more times than I can count, simply because of my profession.
thatcher was definitely sociopathic - she is on record as saying she does not believe in the existence of society. she certainly saw herself as being above the law. most psychologists agree that she is sociopathic, if not even psychopathic.
it is a concept that can not be defined because it changes thoughtout history like terrorism
