Through out history the "Crow" has been linked to magical powers by many different societies and Hollywood has asociated the "Crow" with the occult in more recent years.

They are eaters of the dead, scavengers, and thief's, and are intelligent and socially connected as a group, more so than some of the other birds. So it would certainly seem to those unknowing or unlearned that they were birds of evil.

isn't "real folklore" an oxymoron? I mean, the folklore is really folklore, but doesn't folklore mean its only part truth and part myth? or something like that. NEwho, I think most of the hype in modern vampire times (good name for a "dark" newspaper) is mostly hollywood and the perversion of the name of vampire into mindless, unfeeling, inhuman, pale, light-hating, murderous, creepy, unromantic creatures of the dead. Almost none of which are true.

Depends on how you look at it. In Celtic culture, the Crow is the symbol of the Goddess, Morrigon..or Morrighu` however you wish to spell or pronounce it.. She is the goddess of steel, warfare and often the harbinger of death. But on the other hand she is often seen at times the protector of children and the innocent. Morrigon would often appear to her warriors and Generals in the form of a crow during a war, letting them know she was watching over and protecting them. It is said those she appeared to never fell in battle.

My point is this: I don't see the crow as associated with vampires or anything Hollywood has put out. I think that people are easily led, and believe what they want to believe. I don't exactly believe the folklores and myths about certain animals either. I am a you have to see it to believe it kind of girl. When I see a real vampire, then I will believe it. When I see a God/Goddess or the Devil, then I will believe it. If a crow or any other animal shows that it isnt just an animal. then I will believe it. Same goes for werewolves, demons, gargoyles, dragons, unicorns, leprechauns and other mythical creatures and deities.

Crows and ravens (same genus - Corvus) have been thought to be associated with death or harbingers of bad events in many cultures. Some Native American tribes associate them with death. With the genus name "Corvus" one also wonders if someone didn't make a leap from that to Corvinus???

That is for him being as an animal totem, what I think comes from Native American belief about totem animals.

"The Crow" the movie was based on the Graphic Novel...Hollywood had nothing to do with the storyline."The Crow" the movie became a "Cult Classic"because Brandon Lee died while making the film.

As for crows being linked to "Vampires"
it is believed that crows were controled by them after death..or when villagers buried a "vampire" crows would appear at the grave site.

http://www.crowbusters.com/begart15.htm

Quotes from the above listed site:

Crows have been used for the purpose of divination since the time of ancient Rome.

Finding a dead crow on the road is good luck.

Crows in a church yard are bad luck.

A single crow over a house meant bad news, and often foretold a death within. "A crow on the thatch, soon death lifts the latch."

It was unlucky in Wales to have a crow cross your path. However, if two crows crossed your path, the luck was reversed. "Two crows I see, good luck to me" .

In New England, however, to see two crows flying together from the left was bad luck.

When crows were quiet during their midsummer's molt, some European peasants believed that it was because they were preparing to go to the Devil to pay tribute with their black feathers.

Often, two crows would be released together during a wedding celebration. If the two flew away together, the couple could look forward to a long life together. If the pair separated, the couple might expect to be soon parted.

In Somerset (West Country of England) locals used to carry an onion with them for protection from magpies or crows.

The French had a saying that evil priests became crows, and bad nuns became magpies.

The Greeks said "Go to the Crows" the same way we would say "Go to Hell."

The Romans used the expression "To pierce a Crow's eye" in relation to something that was almost impossible to do.

An Irish expression, "You'll follow the Crows for it" meant that a person would miss something after it was gone.

The expression, "I have a bone to pick with you" used to be " I have a crow to pick with you".

Not all folklore is false some may be false, some may be partly false and some may be true. I have not heard folklore linking crows and vampires until some listed in this thread. I would not presume though to say there isn't any since I know that there is a lot of folklore in the world and I know for a fact that I have not heard all of the folklore in the world.

see now I thought that was the Raven.......I could be wrong, I need to swat up on my mythology...
It was a crow or a raven that was sent into hell because of his brave but stupid attitude to find out/or bring back something (I so can't remember the story). But it was said that since then they are less likely to fly off when 'man' is around.

I think Hollywood has blown everything out of proportion a little bit.

Depending on your culture they have different meanings. Because of their dark plumage, and nerve racking calls, and the fact they eat carrion, they are linked to be the harbingers of death and doom.

Some religions believe the crow or raven to be the symbolic event of death. The transition into the afterlife.

Crows are also believed to have some psychic ability, due to them being black, since the color black is associated with "the abyss". (Wikipedia)

As to a crow being linked to a vampire, I have never read that anywhere. But I have heard it a lot.

The crow isn't linked to death at all. Its about as linked to it as a fluffy pink unicorn.

I dont really think they are linked. It more because they are so black and death has always been linked with black. It the same as a Grandfather clock if it beats 13 times someone dies in your family. Could happen but more of a folk law.

The crow is definately a powerful and strong creature. Linking it "only" with death would be very short-sighted.

The crow has been linked to the Otherworld for quite some time....the semi-recent linking to vampires may be mostly Hollywood there.

The crow is suppose to be the spirit of the dead that is waiting to move on. Or a lost soul .

I think that a Crow is linked to Death because of superstitions... Other than that and what others have stated I'm not so sure. I've just read that crows are associated with bad luck.

The crow, like the raven, is associated with the protector, Mahakala, so I think it would be just a Hollywood thing.

I have never heard of the crow being linked to the vampire...If you've heard this somewhere I would advise you to consider the source. A lot of concepts make for good movie plots heh.

However, both crows and ravens appearances might mean something when seen in dreams? Maybe something vampire related?

I have heard of the crows escorting souls to the other side.. or back to this side as in the movie kinda thing.

But the first thing I remember being taught Crows stood for was they are the keepers of Sacred Law. The ones the teach us to walk our talk so to speak. And like the raven they deal with change as well.

If we want to go all Hollywood, then sure the crow is linked to the dead. But in none of the movies was it related to vampires.

If we look at literature and perhaps zoology, we see a creature that eats prey- and what easier prey is there than the almost or newly deceased.

It doesn't mean that there is any spiritual connection necessarily. Nor does the crow indicate the likelihood of a grave opening up to a vampire clawing its way out.

I think Hollywood exaggerates on a lot of things. They do this for entertainment purposes.

I really don't think the crow is linked to anything in particular, but everyone is going to have their own opinions obviously.

"Talk" might have been around for ages, but that cannot confirm a supernatural connection between the crow or a ravyn with death. We love to infuse nature with a mystique that rarely is founded in anything other than speculation.

although not all crows are known for this, there are many crows such as the Common Raven, Australian Raven and Carrion Crow have all been known to kill weak lambs as well as eating freshly dead corpses. So this may be one of the reasons that people associate crows/ravens with the dead. But this is not true for all crows... some crows each strictly grain and other substance as well.

LOL yeah but where would it all go?? :P anyway this is kinda getting off topic hehe :) anyway the point I was trying to make was that there is a reason that crows/ravens are associated with death. I think that may be a partial reason and also that they are useful creatures in this world :) :P

Just because it feeds off of weak or dead creatures though does not make it linked to death. The wild is full or creatures that attack "weaker" animals to maintain their livelihood. We do not necessarily relate flies to death even though the swarm cacuses, nor do we think anything of a lion that attacks a zebra. It is the food chain at work and not a symbolic supernatural connection.
