Given that there are new members joining all the time, there must be topics that are endlessly repeated.

My question to the forum is :

How do long term members view these repeats.

Do you still try and add what you may have added many times before ? Or do you ignore certain threads ?

Do newbies feel longer term members get a tad impatient with certain topics ?

I do try to add a lil insight if I notice a repeat in post threads.. But thats me.. I feel that if at times they would go through the entire threads listed they may find what they were looking for..

I also feel that new members do getr frustrated about the remarks made often by older members but I myself understand they are new and have yet to completely understand the site and how things truly work..

It's not so bad when a topic is repeated for the sake of gaining knowledge. One thing whelps should do is read the VR manual and surf the data base and articles. There is a ton of info that has been covered in the forumm not to mention it is likely more acurate.

Well I'm somewhat new, been here only a month. There are almost 4500 threads. At 15 per page, thats 300 pages to navigate. You must forgive new ones.

Best bet is to present the question. If it's been done to death an admin will politely let you know. I've seen some beaten to death topics end up with some pretty cool thread and conversation.

Aquisition of knowledge is an ongoing process.
There's bound to be repeated threads BUT this gives older members to hare their view and maybe (like all of us) learning something new.

One of the ideas is that a topic can be covered again after 30 days. This serves two purposes in my perspective.

1. It keeps the forum going with new topic *hopefully*
2. It allows sometime before the topic comes around again for new members to join and in some cases for new information to be found.

The biggest issue I see is not that a good topic is repeated, but that questions are not thought out to encourage discussion.

When there is some fear of posting, typically people do better, because they are thinking about what they post. Not just posting the first bit of drivel that comes to them.

I usually post a similar response, if at all. What's good about new threads is there are usually new opinions to bounce ideas off of and respond to. Makes it more interesting.

I would think between the time it is first started as a new thread and the time that it is repeated many people might have gained more knowledge to bring to the discussion. So I would think it could be a positive thing if it gets repeated. Now if you post a subject once and then post it again a month later without further knowledge that would be annoying.

Yes,they really do,need to learn.Im one of the worse in that, and I know I get a little short when I just get finished with a topic only to find it going again soon after.I dont mean anything personally by it tho.
I know I go pretty far back looking for subjects and things looking for info or before I start one,To miss one here and there is ok,but to see something repeatedly, sometimes it gets on my nerves, mainly because by repeating things so often, many of the ones who post good info get tired of repeating themselves.Plus,I feel that others might want to put a little effort in what they are wanting to learn, therefore looking for it.Thats what archives are for.But what the heck, whatever is easiest I guess.

while i feel that repeats are a waste of time i also see the importance of people being able to ask their questions i also sometimes don't mind being as new information or insight can be brought to our attn. the only reason i tend to get angry is when you try to help them with their seeking of knowledge they get so pissy about it.

That is a big issue and sometimes it really is hard to put it into a question. It can make or break the topic even.
Good point.

Others here have brought up some good things too on the time factor, learning something new or thought adjustment for others..I really think it would be better and not so annoying if the thirty day time frame was observed a little more.At least for me.

Myself I dont care about the repeats if someone starts a thread that has been made in the pass to me it doesnt matter. What matters is that they are attempting to be active and thats what counts. Besides some threads in the pass that keep popping up are very well received and always have heaps of mbr's post in them. I think it is a good thing as more and more ppl join VR they have a say in what has been posted in the pass. I always post in any thread that I find of interest no matter if it has been here before.

As long as the thread has mbr's posting in them and they dont lay dormant then there isnt a problem in my mind. As more and more ppl join VR they all come in with different knowledge, options and ideas. We all can learn from this. We all have different ways of seeing things and we can all learn from each other. Isnt that the reason VR is here in the first place to gather information, what better way to gain it.

I am glad it has. We all see things different and as we talk about things and gain knowledge we can change our options through seeing things in a different way. If we dont allow old post to be open up because it has been done before we will miss out on someones point of view which can open our mind to new ways.

As on older member there are times when the forum is repetitive. I also know that just because the subject is the same it doesn't mean the discussion is identical to past ones. New evidence and new insight can be added by newer VR members that I can appreciate and learn from.

New members aren't usually big forum users and therefore don't really know if a thread is a repeat, therefore its just better to suck it up and zip it.

Not all threads follow the same course, in fact the majority don't even thou the subject may be identical.
I think it's harder to stay on topic.
It only takes one new item in the form of a post to be added and that makes the thread worthwhile.
That's why there is a fantastic data base.

I pay no mind to repeat threads as I have found that if you truelly wish to share your views and perhaps help others sometimes you have to move through a repeat of something to get there. Often I tend to say the same things over and over.. but that is becuase I have come across someone new that is looking for the information that I might contain. I think it is just a part of teaching and learning of the different ways and beliefs in life.

I have been here quite some time and I feel if that if it is a topic that has had some major discussion tied into it and it has been closed due to length then why not open it again, it obviosly was a popular topic. Now if a thread was just opened let's say a week ago and it has faded 4 or 5 pages back without being closed for length then there is no reason to open it back up for at least 30 days.

What I would like to see happening more often is these topics of mass disscussion..(no pun intended) ...be reopened if the thread has been closed for length, or opened again in a part 2 of the discussion. The topic is obviously worthy of more discussion.

As stated above, The Search Forum button is helpful in refining your question.

I've read many of the older threads and felt a tinge of regret that I missed out on some of the earlier discussions --- the input was well-stated and interesting.

"Elders" may not want to post in some of the repetitive threads, but I encourage you to post new threads. Surely, you haven't covered all the topics, and even a leap forward from an old discussion would be worthwhile.

Now, that would be an interesting experiment.

I am in agreeance with Tego and Oceanne, though we have new members everyday within the Rave, most of them really do need to read the manual before continuing further, rather than jumping in where they should have read before hand. Off the bat forum threads could end as a result in reading said manuals.

As the database is quite full of usefull information in regards to the threads themselves, this should be a second step after joining.

As for the irritation values, I feel more of what Oceanne stated, the feeling of being burnt out on certain subjects, as they seem to pete and repeat over and over within two to even three weeks time, not even looking within the forum itself for almost the same ideal threads...Which takes me back to the jumping the gun topic as stated above.

I know many are giddy when they first join, as we all were and perhaps still are...But there does come a time when four threads within a months time, come from the same discussions, mainly re-iterated into differant querries regarding the same topics.

But hey, live and let learn. Nothing can be stopped, merely side stepped.

If you feel as though something has been discussed recently, then don't post. Either this, or simply suggest the member to the correct forum thread.

I really don't mind repeat threads. If you think about it, the forum really wouldn't be that active if we had to think of a completely new and original topic before posting it. We could have the same topics up here for weeks at a time without anything new!

I dont find it annoying to see some threads endlessly repeated, as long as the threads do not deturiate in their discussion, and I try to contribute to those repetitions if I am able to.

I don't mind the repeats myself. I'm sure if topics weren't aloud to repeat there probably wouldn't be so many threads being created.

I haven't been a member very long, but just in the last month I have seen many repeated topics. Some are worth repeating because there is new information added every time, but others seem pointless to me. I'm sure it can get very annoying for people who have been members for years to read the same topics over and over again.

Maybe there can be an electric shock sent to the users mouse when they click the post button if it's a repeated topic.

Kidding...

I love intelligent converation. I'd rather sit here for hours on end in a stimulation thread than watch 30 minutes of television.

I reply to a thread if it has caught my interest, even if i have seen the same subject before, as previously stated the suject could have new points of views as well as information added to it. Plus your own knowledge could very well have expanded since the last post as well and it's always good to pass on new tidbits of information.

Sinora, the 30 day rule has been in effect for some time. That said, it needs to be remembered that sometimes there is enough of a different spin on the original that what some consider a duplicate is technically not.

Also we have to allow for if a topic is getting a good response, that is what we are looking for in the forums; well those threads we typically leave open. It is difficult at times, as there is no way to please all people with the forums.

There are indeed plenty of other topics that could be talked about that would fit into the GD. People just have to look for new things to talk about, as there are more than likely many things left.

But as to the vampire part, people put it in over kill on topics about them. And always about the same things; Do they exist? Proof of their existence. What do you think about vampires? et cetera.

In my opinion not really IM. I can never tire of some subjects because there is so much to learn and one can never know enough. What bugs me about the repeats,is not the repeating itself, but that many times peeps will post something really good on the subject and it seems to be ignored while the opinions just keep rolling in...it turnsd out there is hardly any disscussion, so that the topic can carry on into something worthwhile,as opposed to going ro9und and round with the I believes, but nothing as to why.

Yes I agree, that annoys me too & it's the same on most forums although may be worse on this one because of the status system. People will just read the post then reply to it to get points rather than taking the time to read through all the responses & follow on with a discussion.

And so the subject doesnt progress and get stuck in the same rut over and over again.
The format in which Cancer and his team have tried to maintain in this forum is an excellent one.It gives us a wonderful opp to talk about the weird things that we at this site seem to love. But if we,as users do not do our best to become paqrticipants who can look at a subject and disscuss it,how can we get anything from it? Newbie or no.It is up to us to make these threads as informative and actice as we possibly can, bucking up on our own research so we can converse withothers about it in debth..And by that,a subject HAS to progress past a point of "I think so",or "no,it isnt that".Otherwise it will repeat itself time and time again .

IM,first, peeps have to actually interact..not just read the initial question and post an opinion and leave..they really need to READ what is been said because otherwise, not only will the subject get repeated, but so will the same information.

I dont agree that it has anything really to do with the status system however,Its all up to the posters..Newbies have a period where they cannot post at first, that is most likely in place partly so the newbie can look around , get settled and read whats going on in the forum etc..By the time they hit a level where they can post, they should have a good idea of what is being postedby then...
And read the elders articles and such..these guys have been at their research a heeck of a while and believe me,they have done their homework..time some posters here in the forum did too if they want to get in on a subject they are really interested in..
I dunno,maybe Im just being a crab..

To me there is no such thing as a repeat as there are always new opinions and thoughts on the subject since there are always new members and the ones that have been here awhile might have new thoughts on it as well. I try to keep up and read all the threads but I don't always have the time to read every last one.

It is like a good book, you read it once, come back to it, discover new things. And new members do add new insight, and since you are no longer the same person you were a month before, since you had new experiences in your life, the thread in part becomes new again

If someone is new to VR they really dont know how the system works and it can be confusing, but on the other hand if they would take the time to read the VR manual then these things might not happen because everything is explained in there. For the most part I think 80% of the people that are posting are just trying to get there post count up any way they can.

Well, I have been a member since before this site had 3000 people. It was a nice, small community then. Rating was harsher, forums were more serious, and there weren't very many newbs running around.
Posts are repeated because the older ones are gone or not known by the newer members. The forums are for those that want to discuss things and those that want input from their fellow Rave members. I have never become impatient with topics, but then again I am a very patient person.

That is my take on the matter...

lol.. all things come around, in time.. we all know how things are, don't we? just as we posted things from before, things will get posted again, and why not? there is always a new idea about an old topic... just look at what historians are doing to maritime history....

I agree! And I don't really mind if a topic is repeated especially if it has been a long time since the topic was discussed. I'm a teacher and so I know patience inside and out so I would hope that newbies think I'm nice and patient with them :) lol. To answer the original question, I would just maybe say the same thing I put in the old forum post except just reword it or if my feelings have changed, then just put what I think at the time.

I know of a couple of threads that seem to keep popping up like the Bermuda Triangle and another is Nostrodarmous however each time these have appeared over time the decussion is different and leads down a separate path then the ones before.

There are ppl in VR that monitors the Forums and I am sure that if something is the same that they would act on it.
