You've heard all sorts of stories about Atlantis and the people that might have lived there. You've heard theories about what happened to it, like that it might have sunk which is the most popular opinion. But what if it's still there, only covered in snow and ice?
Perhaps threads have been made on this before, but I've never seen one so I'm making one now.
Science shows us that there was/may of been a time long long ago that Antarctica was not covered in snow. Ancient maps can show us this. It is a difficult place to study at the best of times, so it is hard for anyone to unearth any possible remains of ancient civilisation. To this day it is a mysterious place with unusual things like the dry valleys, but what if it was once full of people and other life?

What do you think, was Antarctica once Atlantis, or have you got your own theories?

That is quite the mind grabber. It's possible. I'd like to believe that Atlantis existed at some point, whether it be Antarctica or some other place.

Well I have never thought of that before. But that could be true. Antarctica was not always ice and snow, but who knows if it is or once was Atlantis. All I am saying is anything can happen.

It could be possible that Atlantis was around antartica. Like it was said this is a area that would be very hard to explore to find any signs of ancient civilazations

Interesting theory, I seen something like this on Stargate SG-1, but it wasn't Atlantis. You never know there could be many more things covered under all that snow and ice.

Actually I had never heard of this map, but it's very very interesting! I've heard of other maps that have shown Antarctica in amazing detail long before it was 'discovered'. The Atlantis theory is one I have had for some time, hopefully it's not just me who thinks the same thing is possible.

I am really not sure to the answer of that question since there are many many theories of speculation regarding the Atlantis civilisation, and its utopia island. I would agree that much of the questions would be answered if one is about to use a sofisticated high density long-wide
range laser scanner capable of reading and identifieing the ground formations and what is on it, or remnants of any difference, wich would certanly help us, if applied from air, in discovery and answers regarding this mistifying subject of Atlantis, wich is drawing interest of every single being here on planet Earth. I am sure that much of other questiones regarding all kind of various fascinating curious subjects(those of a question of the underground cities, and many many others) would be answered to us with equal efficiency to the benefit of our curiousity and the minds thirst for knowledge, if only such a apparatus would be availible to us. Too bad it is not. Borring time it is.

The 'mythical' island of Atlantis was in the Atlantic Ocean.. here is a quote from Plato from www.mystae.com:

(1) "A Wonderful Empire"
"You do not know that there formerly dwelt in your land the fairest and noblest race of men which ever lived, and that you and your whole city [Athens] are descended from a seed or remnant of them which survived.
"The power came forth out of the Atlantic Ocean, for in those days the Atlantic was navigable; and there was an island situated in from of the straits which are by you called the Pillars of Hercules [Gibraltar]: the island was larger than Libya and Asia put together, and was the way to other islands...Now in this island of Atlantis there was a great and wonderful empire which had rule over the whole island, and several others, and over parts of the continent, and furthermore the men of Atlantis had subjected the parts of Libya within the columns of Hercules as far as Egypt and of Europe as far as Tyrrhenia [Italy]."
- Plato, Timaeus, 22c-23c; 24c-d

"So great was Atlantis that Plato had to shift its location to 'beyond the Pillars of Hercules' (outside of the Strait of Gibraltar), which in classical times was the standard location used in stories about lands far away in distance and/or time."
- "The Minoan Civilization - Atlantis Found?"

Plato claimed to have learned his story of the sinking of the lost continent of Atlantis from relatives who had passed it down from the great Athenian statesman Solon. Solon had reportedly traveled to Egypt and received his information from Egyptian priests at Sais in 559 B.C.E. The priests told him that the great disaster had taken place almost 10,000 years earlier, almost exactly a factor of ten too large for the eruption of Thera (which occurred around 1500 B.C.E. according to archeological dating or 1627 B.C.E. according to dendrochronology and radiocarbon dating.

"The story of Atlantis, if Plato did not invent it, may reflect some Egyptian record of this eruption, one of the most stupendous of historical times. "
- Encyclopaedia Britannica

"If a legend, passed down for nearly a thousand years before it reached Solon, and for an additional two hundred years before Plato finally committed it to paper, can, through successive retellings, expand an island culture into a continental one and dislocate it west a thousand miles, it is easy to believe that Plato's family, or the Egyptians, or both, stretch its age as well."

This is from www.geocities.com:

Plato was clear that Atlantis was located somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. By stressing that it was beyond the pillars of Hercules(which are now called the Straits of Gibalter and are between Spain and Libya) we know that. Many scholars take this and then placed Atlantis on different islands like the Azores, the Cape Verde Islands, and the Canaries and Madeira. Claiming that this chain of islands are sim the mountain peaks of the sunked Atlantis continent.
In the 15th century cartographers placed Atlantis on the maps in all sorts of areas. When the Americas were discovered it wasn't long before theories about it being Atlantis sprung up. Such errors did nothing to stop the growing mania for lost lands though. Eventually blooming into a new science in the late 19th century-Atlantology

The most prominet Atlantologist was American politican and US Congress Member, Ignatius Donnelly. In 1882 he published the bible for searhers of Atlantis, Atlantis: The Antediluvian World which soon became a bestseller. Donnelly's thesis rested on similarities he found amoung the many pre-columbian civilazations in the America's and the ancient Egyptians. He believed they both had a common origin...on Atlantis. And that the survivors of Atlantis had gone their seperate ways after the diaster and had passed on their knowledge to the people they found. Plus that the recurring flood story in many cultures history was actually that of the sinking of Atlantis. Donnelly's work was well researched and would have good future, providing an enduring source for a long line of disciples.

Other theories have placed Atlantis in other sites rather then in the middle of the Atlantic. The "sleeping prophet" Edgar Cayce placed it in the Bahammas around the island of Bimini. He also claimed that in 1967 Atlantis would begin to rise again. Well guess what, in 1967 a undersea geologic team finds what appears to be man-made stone walls on the coastal floor. Debate has raged since then about their true origins. Geologist claim that they are natural while believers, well believe their Atlanits.

Also the mediterian island of Crete has also been credited with being part of Atlantis. Several other candidates also surface, some real close to fighting the Atlantis legend, with sunken regions and even what once appeared to be concentric rings like on the island Santorini.

Atlantis has been one of the most infamous stories. Almost everyone has some interest in it. As to whether or not Plato ment the story as an example for his students are was true knowledge of his ancestors, no one will ever know. As to whether someone will find it. I'm glad to know the search will go on.

I think that its a possibility but not necessarily a place like how Atlantis is described, I think its all just wishful thinking. Its just like people to picture the most elaborate setting because that is more appealing, not necessarily the way it might truly had been....

Hmm, highly informative and thought provoking though it is, I think the stuff here about Hitler and the Foo Fighters is going off on a slightly different tangent :p But it's still interesting, because it adds to Antarctica's mysterious history.

The thing about it was meant to be in the Atlantic Ocean? Well that' makes sense as the names are almost identical exceptions for the last letter. So here's another idea!

ALOT of time has past since the supposed exsistance of Atlantis. Over time, the land can change. Mapping skills have also become better or worse depeing on which country the cartographer is from. I recently hired a book on the History of Cartography and had a good laugh at some of the utterly incorrect maps. Countries, even seas change their name, location, shape and so on.
One thought is that since we are talking many thousands of years here, perhaps 6-8000, Antarctica may have once stretched further into the Atlantic ocean. Maybe yes maybe no, but that would bring us back to the sinking theory.
Perhaps the map-makers of way back when, or indeed anyone, had not yet named the Antarctic or Southern Ocean. Even the Piri Reis map is incorrect in some aspects, the most interesting part of it being that it shows subglacial Antarctica.
I was finding this alot less confusing until just now when I started looking up more about it on the net, and reading contradictory statements all the time is starting to hurt my brain.

Look at this pictures: http://www.prepare-ye-the-way.com/images/atlantismap01.jpg

And now this one: http://www.goldenageproject.org.uk/images/slides/maps-of-the-ancient.jpg

Then this one shows Antarctica without icecap: http://www.goldenageproject.org.uk/images/slides/antarctica.jpg

Am loving all this information everybody, I one day hope to publish a book on this topic, so your ideas will help me research and consider other theories.

It might appear to be going off to the left just a little, but really my whole point, since someone had mentioned it, was to show that Hitler was said to believe that Atlantis was in Antarctica, and that the Aryan people where in fact the Atlanteans.

There is a whole body of evidence that suggests there may be more than meets the eye with the Antarctica/Atlantis theory, at least in as far as Antarctica once had a sub-tropical to temperate climate. For this to be the case, one of two things has to be true. Either the poles were far removed from where they are now, or Antarctica had to be far removed. There is real evidence that both of these conditions have been fulfilled during the course of this planet's history.

Let's consider the first possibility. It's a documented fact that the North Pole moves. Between 1900 and 1960, it moved ten feet in the direction of Greenland. That's 2.5 inches, or 60mm, a year. Between 1960 and 1968 the pole also moved another ten feet, this time at a rate of 100mm or four inches per year. Not only is the pole moving, but the rate of motion is increasing. In other words, it is accelerating. There is also a theory that suggests the North and South Poles have switched places during the history of the planet.

So on to the second condition. In Antarctica, very little flourishes. The plains of Antarctica can reach a brisk minus 90°C whilst the coastal areas reach a comparatively tropical minus 60°C. There are no indigenous land animals, although the coastline is home to seabird rookeries. The Encyclopaedia Britannica lists all the burgeoning plant life; 'Lichens, mosses and liverworts, moulds, yeasts, other fungi, algae and bacteria...'. In other words, as far as plant life goes, it resembles your kitchen when a lodger has been away for the weekend and no-one else has cleaned up after you.

500 miles north of the South Pole is the fossilised remains of a forest, 7,000 feet up Mount Ahernar. It is believed to be from the Permian period, 260 million years ago. In 1935, Admiral Byrd's South Pole expedition found fossilised leaves, stems and wood two miles above sea level on the side of Mount Weaver. The Russians have found evidence of tropical flora dating back to the early Tertiary period. In 1990, fossils from a deciduous beach forest were found 250 miles from the South Pole – fossils that were only two or three million years old. In 1986, fossilised wood and plants were discovered that showed some places on the continent were ice-free as little as 100,000 years ago. The University of Illinois says that sedimentary core samples show that rivers were running to the sea in 4,000BC.

In the Arctic Circle the story is the same. Fossilised palm leaves have been found, as have fossilised crustaceans that can only survive in tropical waters. These were found at Spitzbergen, which today is ice-bound for ten months of the year and cannot be reached by sea. The palm leaves and marine fossils show that a sea that had a comparable temperature to the Caribbean today once surrounded this island. On Baffin Island, 900 miles from the North Pole, alder and birch remains found in peat show that the island had a much warmer, temperate climate only 30,000 years ago.

These plants cannot grow at the temperatures that these regions experience today. They cannot grow in the regimes of 24-hour periods of darkness followed by 24-hour periods of daylight. Either the poles were in different places than they are now, or these lands were in different geographical locations than they are now.

If the Antarctic continent had once been positioned much further north than it is now – say, in the middle of the Atlantic – would it have been able to support civilisation? Well, it fits the known criteria. It had a stable congenial climate for at least 10,000 years. It has vast mountain ranges and huge river systems that flowed across the long flat plains. It has enough room – it's about the size of the continental United States. It only had to have been positioned 2,000 miles further north for it to have enjoyed a Mediterranean climate, making it a very amenable place to live.

I do not believe you will find Atlantis under the ice of Antartica. With climate changes through out the ages many places were green where now they are deserts and tundra plains. Oceans where you will now find rolling hills.

A Lost Paradise

Most of the information we have about Atlantis comes from the ancient Greek philosopher Plato. He says that Atlantis lay west of the Pillars of Hercules (rock formations at the Straits of Gibraltar), in the Atlantic Ocean. On this huge island was a "great and wonderful empire" where brave, virtuous people lived in a kind of paradise.

But this peaceful existence came to an end when the people of Atlantis began to love power more than they loved the gods. They waged war against the rest of the world, but were ultimately defeated by the wise and moral Athenians. Then, some 9,000 years before Plato's own time, or around 9,500 B.C.E., earthquakes sunk Atlantis into the sea.

In Search of Atlantis

There is no proof that Atlantis ever existed. Many people believe that Atlantis was just a legend, told by Plato to praise the values Athenian society held dear. But others believe that the storied island was based in fact. Some have argued that Atlantis was in the Americas, or in the Canary Islands, or in Antarctica. Others think Atlantis was in fact the Greek island of Thera—a theory fed by recent archaeological discoveries.

The Thera Theory

In the late 1960s Professor Spyridon Marinatos discovered the remains of a Bronze Age city near Akrotiri, on the island of Thera (Santorini). The city's streets, buildings, pottery, and colorful wall paintings prove that it was a wealthy society much like the Minoan civilization of nearby Crete. But around 1500 B.C.E., a devastating volcanic eruption—far greater than the one that covered Pompeii—buried the city under 15 feet of ash.

Was Thera the land of Atlantis? Some believe that Plato was indeed describing Thera, but that he was wrong about its location and the date of its destruction—or that translations of his writings have been misunderstood. If Plato did not completely make up the story of Atlantis, it probably has its origins in ancient Egyptian records that told of the events at Thera.

Atlantis Tours Unlimited

It is easy to understand the desire to find archaeological proof of Atlantis. Who wouldn't want to be able to visit the remains of paradise on Earth? Today, the Atlantis legend helps bring tourists to Thera by the boatload. Visitors enjoy black sand beaches, archaeological sites, and dramatic volcanic cliffs. And the weary can rest their feet at the Hotel Atlantis.

My opinion:
Our race is a race with amnesia -
We recently (relatively speaking)lost the great library of Alexander
The Egyptians used electric lights (its in the clyphs)
The asians populated the americas
There were blond indians here as well (thanx norsemen)

Atlantis did exist as an island nation.
The Atlantean's left information for us all over the earth (look under the Sphinx's left paw) It was there before the Ehyptions - they just changed the face... notice the water marks on the back (flood)

The continents have shifted and yes Antarctica was a lot further north.
Accompanied with polar shifts - it met its end.
The Atlanteans moved across the world and that is why we all have similar basic "beliefs".

When the poles flip again - Atlantis will thaw and I'm getting a place by the lake....

yo cherry i like your intrest in this.
ive been reading and looking this up for some time.
here is what i found.
Discovery channel on atlantis.
well so as the program has said i dont know how many people watch these or not but alot has to do with the triangle motion between easter island, the famous stone henge site and the area where babylon once resided in iraq or iran i cant remember which.
however if this is the case atlantis was supposibly found in the atlantic showing like a walk way toward land however this was never found to be true. many parts of what seem to be atlantis that they have found however do point that it did indeed exist.
it would be like tryn to find all 9 cities of babylon in any case i think that if they find babylon the will have large amounts of clues about atlantis.
also lets not forget about platos existence that once he did indeed find atlantis.
yet all of this still needs to be positioned more properly in trangular areas.
if they do find babylon i do think atlantis could be found.

Atlantis did exist, as far as where... antarctica they had been to. Their main home was in the pacific though, and yes it did "sink". In actuality it was hidden from the rest of the world when it was most convenient and untraceable. At the fall of the babylonian empire and right when many record weres destroyed. They still exist per se, but good luck meeting them face to face.

Nicely thought up. I never thought about putting those two together, but it seems like a huge possibility. It could be covered up but, who knows truly where atlantis was sunk/burried. I think scientists should go and explore this theory.

PolishSiren found information like I did with Plato on the theory of Atlantis...

Atlantis would never have been located in the Antartic. I believe that calling the ocean the Atlantic Ocean was from the myth of Atlantis being smack dab in the middle of larger continents.

There is another city or cities lost underwater...still myths/legends and not as famous as Atlantis: Mu or Lemuria.

Here's a blurb from www.about.com:

Mu or Lemuria

Nearly as famous as Atlantis is the legendary lost world of Mu, sometimes call Lemuria. According to tradition among many Pacific islands, Mu was an Eden-like tropical paradise located somewhere in the Pacific that sunk, along with all of its beautiful inhabitants, thousands of years ago. Like Atlantis, there is ongoing debate as to whether it really existed and, if so, where. Madame Elena Petrovna Blavatsky, the founder of the Theosophy movement in the 1800s, believed it was in the Indian Ocean. The ancient residents of Mu have become a favorite of channelers who bring their enlightened messages to present times.

There was fresh water found under the ice. And green trees under the ice in Greenland. Both of these polar land masses was at on time ice free. But ... it was waaay before either Atlantis and Lemuria. So neither one can be this land of fable - true or not. Some say that Maui is one of the high mountains of Lemuria. As for Atlantis, try somewhere never Greece.

Actually I was interested in what temptedbyFate said. It's true that the world has undergone many dramatic changes throughout history, and it is still happening now.
Poles flipping, well, now that's a topic I've always been seriously interested in! They say that the poles flip once every 700 odd years or something, though I suspect it may be longer. Another pole flip is predicted soon, they say we're due for one judging by what they think has happened before.
When and if it happens, perhaps Antarctica will thaw, whereas other places wil freeze... no one can really know until it happens. The event will have a major impact on nature, more than just north becoming south and vice versa. Perhaps it is prehistoric events like this that have hidden or removed places like Atlantis.

The world is currently changing, though people are ignoring the signs because they're scared or confused mostly. Look at the world's messed up weather. There are lots of ideas about what we're in for, ice age, switched poles, something else? The question is, what will happen, what might be revealed, and will we be around to see it?

HUh? Man made Ice cap? Well thats an interesting theory...I would like to hear what would make one think that.
Also,Geological changes do not happen quite so fast..700 years is nothinbg on Earth time scale..Consecutive reversals are spaced 5 thousand years to 50 million years apart.T he last reversal happened approx 740,000 years ago and
they say we are most likely due for the next one in 2012,but of course,no one knows for sure.

This is one of my favorite subjects unfortunately I do not believe Atlantis is there.

However there are many other cool and weird things in Antartica - I bleieve Oceanne was so kind as to put a link up.

Atlantis could quite easily be underneath Antarctica since it is nearly impossible for us to do much of anything down there

there have been many though who think they have found the city in other places around the world...it will probably be quite difficult to determine if we ever actually find the real city since there are ruins of numerous cities resting at the bottom of the oceans

He makes so much sense. They are old but worth the time.

The natural temperature cycles of the Earth cause the polar ice caps to expand and contract. As the ice melts the ocean levels rise, as the polar caps expand and the glaciers expand, more water is frozen so the ocean levels fall. We also see shifting land masses, tectonic plates shifing, etc..

So in the end, sure, there are probably cities that have been swallowed up by the oceans.

If you think about the last ice age, ice sheets 100's of feet thick covering half of north america. Our current civilization would be greatly altered. We would move closer to the equator, be short of food, crops, etc..

But if we had enough time, we could develop the technology to build cities on the ocean floor. It might be the only way for large numbers of people to survice. Everything on the surface may be destroyed by the glaciers.

Perhaps that happend already during the last ice age and that was were the stories of atlantis came from.

I believe that Antarctica could of been Atlantis because the Earth's crust shifts every 26,000 years and in December 21, 2012 we will again see this shift. Maybe the USA will be the next Antartica? It could happen. The Mayan's predicted this cosmic event along with many others.

As stated at wikipedia under the topic "Atlantis":

"Atlantis (in Greek, Ἀτλαντὶς νῆσος, "island of Atlas") is the name of a legendary island first mentioned in Plato's dialogues Timaeus and Critias...

"As a story embedded in Plato's dialogues, Atlantis is generally seen as a myth created by Plato to illustrate his political theories."

Likewise, my own research cannot bu lead me to the conclusion that "Atlantis," like the legendary "Camelot," was not an actual place. Instead, Atlantis was the fictional setting for Plato's political allegory that later became "Plato's Republic".

Hmm.. I don't think so. From what I know, Atlantis has been shown in most maps, on a completely different area then where Antarctica is now, and much much smaller. It was about the size of Australia, if not smaller. Antarctica is HUGE.. so no, I don't think those two places have anything to do with eachother.

What an intriguing subject. I had never thought of Atlantis being on Antartica .. but after reading this thread, I suppose it is possible.
But even if there were remnants of a lost city there, how would we know matter-of-factly that it was Atlantis?
This is a wonderful subject ... very thought-provoking!

That is a new theory and it is plausible. The problem is we only have an ancient greeks writings on Atlantis to go on and I think Antartica is a bit too far away from the general area mentioned.

Personally I think the story of Atlantis is a myth that will never be proven or disproven. Thousands of years have passed and if there was an Atlantis it is long buried and dead!

But then yet, a mystery such as this is delicious and fires up the imagination doesn't it!

Just came across this to add to the mystery and majesty of the Antarctic:

Giant Marine Life Found in Antarctica

By RAY LILLEY – 9 hours ago

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Scientists who conducted the most comprehensive survey to date of New Zealand's Antarctic waters were surprised by the size of some specimens found, including jellyfish with 12-foot tentacles and 2-foot-wide starfish.

A 2,000-mile journey through the Ross Sea that ended Thursday has also potentially turned up several new species, including as many as eight new mollusks.

It's "exciting when you come across a new species," said Chris Jones, a fisheries scientist at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. "All the fish people go nuts about that — but you have to take it with a grain of salt."

The finds must still be reviewed by experts to determine if they are in fact new, said Stu Hanchet, a fisheries scientist at New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research.

But beyond the discovery of new species, scientists said the survey, the most comprehensive to date in the Ross Sea, turned up other surprises.

Hanchet singled out the discovery of "fields" of sea lilies that stretched for hundreds of yards across the ocean floor.

"Some of these big meadows of sea lilies I don't think anybody has seen before," Hanchet said.

I know and believe the studies there was once people living on what is now the Antarctica because with plate tectonics everything is moving and it use to be up north of where it is now and covered in rain forests.
But Atlantis was just a city and just a small chunk of land mass swallowed by the ocean like how California will some day fall because of the fault line and be swallowed by the ocean as well

That is a very interesting theory. Anything is possible, I mean in all honesty Atlantis could be an island no one can get to, or just anywhere. The truth is, is that no one will ever really know what happened to it or where it was really located, but it will always hold the fascination of this generation and the generations to come. The idea of Atlantis itself has become that of a legend or myth.

Please go read up on it.

They have found many many artifacts that support it.

There are huge collegiate groups doing studies on the world at that time and why so may culture wold wide choose similar architectural styles IE the pyramids. South America, Egypt, and Cambodia all have the same style at the same time periods.. Not to forget that there has been chocolate found all over the Mediterranean and the only place on the planet it is found growing is South America. Back in the 500s I think B.C. a cartographer actually created a map of altantis. It wasnt that great from what I remember but the continent did have the same shape as antarctica without ice. every so many earth generations the axis rotates to an extreme. this might account for the changes in climates since the days of plato and the ice now covering antarctica. according to some, the next rotation is going to occur some time during 2012-2030 when the age of aquarius ends and new age begins.

I never thought of it that way but it's a great theory. However, I think they are two different places.

I believe, they are seperate, but good theory. I think Antarctica, was a vast grassland in scientific terms, but I think it was more like a jungle, who knows, we will find out in oh say 20 years, with global warming and all.

Antarctica may have not been covered in snow and ice at some point in time many, many, many year ago, but during that time I would prostulate the there where no humans running around at the time.

As for Atlantis, I am pretty sure that since the stories of this settlement originated from southern Europe, it would be a safe guess that it was not located in the Antarctic.

Actually, there are human made maps that do show Antarctica with no snow on it... read earlier posts, we've even provided links.
Mermaids? Please don't waste our time.

i think this is another case of people wanting to hang many coats on the same peg. there are many "mythical" cities, islands, continents etc, but Atlantis is the most well known - so everyone tries to associate any lost civilisation with Atlantis - regardless of the geographical location.

a landmass was pin-pointed between Britain and Greenland, that could've been Atlantis .. saw that suggested a short while back.

Either way, I reckon there's probably something hidden there. Most likely it is not Atlantis (because yes it is the most well known), but some other ancient and lost civilisation. The world is full of them, it's very likely that there is something down there.

I agree CA. I also think there's something in Antarctica besides Antarctica. It's much too mystic of a place to just be all ice.

Antacrctica couldnt be further away from Greenland! i know Americans are notorius for not being very good at geography, but that's going too far. Greenland is the Arctic (north pole), Antarctica is at the south pole.

i'm an american and i paid attention in school...

anyway here is a cool link that shows (hints) that the ice over antarctica isnt as old as scientist think.

http://www.world-mysteries.com/sar_1.htm

so to assume that is true. we can say that antarctica could have been the site for atlantis
