When your family, and friends inquire about your VR experience, how do you summarize it for them?
What is a common response to your summarization?
I tell my friends "Its like myspace meets S.C.A. meets Lestat" anyone who knows me know what that means.
That it's a place where I can be mostly myself and not feel ashamed of it.
Damn, Stabb, you stole my answer. ;P
It's like going to a carnival and playing games, where you never know what you'll win, but you know it's going to be cheap. But you could make a friend or two. ;)
I use a lot of public computers, and I get plenty of responses, as well as questions. I just mention, that if they want to know, they just need to open a profile. I have even seen a few people glean the site.
I've only had one person ask and that was because they ran across a friend on my Myspace profile that had a VR banner and asked what the hell that was.
I said, "Vampire Rave...sort of a goth site."
I got,"Ah, gotcha" back.
VR is entertainment. It's like someone asking what movie I'm watching or what book I'm reading. They ask. I tell. We move on.
I let my son play Hangman on my account. He's getting quite good at it. He calls VR the "Creepy Blue Dude Game".
That is the only page he's allowed to be on and I don't think he cares past that. ;)
An awesome cross between a social networking site and a video game.
Everyone who knows me knows I love video games, and my friends mean the world to me.
I love it here, there's such a community atmosphere, but then again there's competition too.
It's home :3
The most common response is "wow, what a sad life you must lead"
It's true dammit ;-;
Lol I had that response too, heck if I have some time to get on-line and enjoy it, why not?
Some are just envious.
I explain that VR offers an oppurtunity to discuss the paranormal and the occult with others who are interested in the subject matter. As for my spouse, I just hide my addiction :P
I have only ever been asked about the site a few times. I usually tell the person that V.r is a site for exchanging knowledge and getting to know other people with the same interests that you may have.
Some friends of my ex-husbands saw the link on my myspace and there ensued a conversation about VR at a party and how the fact that I was a member here was "twisted" they used different words but I am trying to be nice here.....*sighs*......
My youngest son thinks its cool, he is 8. The rest of my family doesn't really care one way or the other.....
I'm pretty sure some of the people I've spoken to about this site think I'm weird for being a member, but alot of my friends think it's cool. I guess people automatically assume it's "bad" to be a member of this site because of the vampire theme.

I explain it as a vampire-themed online community. Simple and right on the money :D
FYI, my husband, sister, and friends from high school and the Marine Corps from years ago are also members here... so I don't really have to do much explaining :)
When I tell someone about my experiences on VR and they ask me what it is I tell them that it is a site with all kinds of people that I can relate to. I sum it up as kind of a gothic myspace but so much better! I personally don't think of this being anything like myspace but that is how to put it into perspective to others who ask.
I just tell people it's a mainly goth online community. Either they're intrigued or they hear the word "goth" and avoid the topic from then on. Simple enough.
Vr is a hobby or a game to me. it is a place relax and get away from whatever it is buggin yourself and such.
None of my family know about me being on here. The way I see it, it is none of their business. My friends are cool with it though.
Its a place where people can discuss things in an open environment about things which would otherwise be considered out there when discussing the Vampire Community.
other then that its really none of their business, i always use the secondary its a goth myspace profile site...
Well, i just says its the darkside of myspace and 100x better !
I explain to them that they've enjoyed movies and books about many different things, and so have I. I've enjoyed stories about Vampires and I found a great site where like minded people discuss their interests as well.
Plus it's got a Database. That's pretty sweet.
VR is a respectable website. No doubt about it.
I say, not everyone there is crazy, honest.
My mom's response...QUIT TAKING IN STRAYS!!!
I just tell those of interest...that is a place of open discussions and meeting people whether it is to talk of vampires, Wicca, those in the dark arts. It is a place where a community of people can come together as a whole.
I just say it's a place for those of us who may not find like-minded people on other social sites to make friends and such. My family is ok with it =)
Online Fictional/Non-fictional vampire information resource.
i don't explain simply because i don't let others into my personal business too much.
although once my oldest sister saw me on here and told her i was posting in coven she had this weird look on her face so i told her that is the name for groups here but didn't explain more.
For me...most of my friends are on here and with my family - I don't hide what I do from them. They have seen me on the site and couldn't care one way or another.
Anyone else? I really don't care what they think.
Family asked about it, I simply asked them why do you care, and they rspond with some kind of "parental advice" and just say , mk, noted, and go back to reading the forums or w/e.
Some of my friends don't care for the site at all when I tell them about. My family memebrs find it interesting that I enjoy the site because they know the dark side of things in my mind. Not to mention its a place that I can go and talk about the paranormal and things that go bump in the night and actually get answers from others about it.
My father and husband both read the forum posts with me and they add their oppinions to the subjects. My sons love the site because of the graphics at this time.
I keep it to myself to enjoy as my own guilty pleasure. My friends know that i like vampires (and ninjas) so they wouldn't be surprised. The drama might turn them off.
I just explain that it is another place that people with common interests can share their thoughts and experiences as well as meet new friends.
My children are very much aware of me being here and at first they thought I was somewhat crazy for being here but my oldest son has contemplated getting an account because of some of the awesome people I have met here and have become friends with.
While my family is for the most part happy I've found a place I enjoy spending time, they neither understand it nor approve of the topic of Vampires or any supernatural topic. But they've always considered me a bit odd so I just grin and go on having fun.
I tell them nothing.....
it's none of their business as to what I do in my life....
Well I tell them its like "Myspace, IM (your choice), etc.
That its very informed to educate you on vampires. You meet
people that are into different things and we all come together and share what we know. Some make strong friendships and others make enemies, but overall its a big
happy family and a home away from home.
A place to meet new people who enjoy a least a few of the things you enjoy. A time to relax and be yourself away from the public. My dark side comes out to play.
The majority of my closest friends have accounts on here as well. As for my family my mother is the only one that's ever asked me about it. I told her that it was a vampire database and a place where people that like vampires can get together. Her reaction: "that's not very christian" lol.
I personally like the fact that there are so many different people who have different beliefs and different viewpoints. To me it is a whole different world where we interact and grow as individuals.
I'm actually really glad my family members don't have accounts here. That would just be odd. They think it's interesting that I'm here but in their own cool way... They couldn't really care less.
I tell people it is a online community, and is nothing like VR. If they want to see what it is about i will show them
I tell my friends that VR is a world within the world. Here, we got drama, friendship and also, people who come into VR to hurt others. So, I tell them, if you are going to join, just becareful, still cyber-space.
When they ask I usually just say "It's an online vampire community". I feel weird saying any more about it. Don't know why. So if they do keep asking I'd probably just tell them to check it out for themselves.
I simply tell people who ask exactly what Vampire Rave is- a huge Vampire fact/fiction database, along with a home for those who think MySpace is just too stupid.
Well my family usually doesnt say anything to me about it since I am 29, but the ones who do think that I am in an occult and being a devil worshiper.
I am asked by those who I have already mentioned the site to.. "What mysterious-ness are you up to this time on that mysterious site?" A running joke at the Coffee Shop.
I just say its a gothic chat site. but mostly I close the page if they come in the room. lol
pumpkinking-
"Wow, sounds like communication is 'the key' to your familial relationship. o_O"
Most of the conversations happen in that matter, and tend to lead to how Jesus loves me, they have not changed, so I avoid the descussions as much as possible to avoid conflict.
When individuals in my household ask about things on VR I tell them what is going on and let them read with me. A few have gotten their own accounts and are on VR themselves now so dont need to ask.
I also have shown VR to a great many people out in the public, it is a resource and that is what I present it as.
The database alone has become a great reference sourse for several friends of mine.
I say it is a fun social site that emphasizes study of vampires, their society, and study of the supernatural. I recommend it to many as an alternative place to meet interesting open minded people. :)
i just tell them its myspace meets vampires. its a great site and the status system is great it rewards you for all your hard work. unlike myspace or facebook
VampireRave Rocks
Well I'm pretty big with Noctem Aeternus. My mother thinks I'm crazy and that I'm in a Satanic cult.
Most know nothing of it. It's my life, my business, I try to keep them from knowing or asking. For the ones that have stumbled around and found out. I usually tell them it's an online community, in some ways similar to myspace but a bit more dark & gothic. I tell them if they have an interest in strange, unusual, gothic or vampires, then they will probably enjoy it and they should check it out sometime.
I don't think that being a Member of VR is such a big deal. My family and friends knows of my interest in vampires, so if they caught me on this site, it would not be of any surprise or shock.
VR is a Community of like-minded individuals who are interested in all genres of vampires, the paranormal, the dark side as well as other things and a place where members can share these interests. And, that is exactly what I tell people who have brought up the subject.
The thing that separates VR from most of the other "vampire sites" I have seen on the net, and why I joined it, is because I find that it is that it is safer, more organized, disciplined--and gives you the opportunity to get involved at any level and meet new friends without feeling pressured.

I tell them it's like MySpace only better. lol... That usually gets them interested right there. They don't have accounts of their own but they like to watch me and talk through me in the forums when I log on.
i tell the friends that have the same interests as most here about it, wonderful people, knowledge to learn. family thinks I am silly and need to grow up. heh i am me.
I tell'em it's a place to past the time with friends and to learn things,

It's fun to be a bit childish sometimes, cadre. ^_^ If you can't have fun, you're just lost in the sauce with no where to go. *laughs*
What a great f'n question dabbler. I usually just explain it away as a goth or supernatural themed and oriented myspace or message board.
I told someone the other day, it is collective, sort of like an Sanitarium for people that like look around in the dark, without being considered crazy.
At almost 60 years of age... wether I use a public computer or not... I was invited to check this place out through a friend over a year ago... I came, I saw, and I've been involved ever since... for the last 2 1/2 months just about on a daily basis... to network, inform, have some fun... receive moral support as I'm currently out of work for the last 2+ months...
I've made some friends... even ones from out of the USA!

I tell them it is a place for vampires and others to hang out and be themselves. A place where no one judges you as a person.
VR is awesome:)
When I was asked what it was by a friend I told her a place where people can be themselves without judgement and learn about anything from Wicca to Vampyres
a social site for goths and others as well:)
I just tell them it's a gothic online community, and most leave it at that, but then I get the response, I didn't know you were goth, you dont look like it.
My brother sees me on this site and has a rather bit of a "distaste" for my friends that got me on here. So finding any way to lash at them he goes, "Vampire? Seriously? I'm beginning to question your Christianity."
I think my brother is going to discover that I don't appreciate having certain aspects of my life questioned as such.
"I'm on this site and if you don't like it you can go to hell."
Ya I think I'm burning already.
This was a fake response to what my brother said. And it should be known that I explained to him rather diplomatically that I don't practice dark rituals on here or bite people for real at least and since I was rating the DB at the time I really said, "What man? I'm shopping."
I would only discribe the site as it was discribed to you when you first signed up. If they had interest in it though, then I would more than likely go into detail about it, such as when 5's was around. It really is all up to who you are talking to, the situation and the place that you are speaking to that individual in, as well as their own personal level of interest.
In reality if you asked what VR meant to me? It has been an important part of how I have grown through out the years from when I first joined to each time I have come back. Plus it is a great place to buff up on your html.
SM
i feel it is a place where i can be myself and make friends who have the same intrests and people that i am not afraid to share my darkest feelings with
i tell them its a place to meat like minded people and have very thoughtful conversation about subjects they would rather i not talk to them about . I also let them know that it is a great data base full of many educational things that don't conform to the beaten path so to speak
I have always felt that this was a place for me. Where I could be free to express myself and what I believe. My family is cool with this and when they ask questions about this site I show them what I am doing...hoping a little to get some of them involved in my other life.
I didn't tell anyone I'm on here. I don't think they would understand
I tell them it's like bebo/facebook/myspace but without all the chavvy idiots.
I also say it's a place where i can be myself... unlike todays society.
Its not that hard - my parents don't even have a computer so there is no discussion there (thank god cuz mom is a born again Christian - help us all). My kids are simple - we are all Wiccan and we love vampires and anything horror or paranormal.
I basically just showed the kids the sight and let them look at some of my friend's proifiles. They are 11 and 18 so they got it right away.
As far as my friends - they click on my banner come here and look about and some of them join and some of them don't.
Basically I just say that it's a social networking site, a lot like myspace...but with a vampiry twist...and friend "requests" are different...but vampirerave's really kewl.
I tell them its a place to meet and make friends and is much the same as all other internet sights.
Why try and hide something if they cannot accept it then it isnt any skin off my nose. I do what I choose not what they tell me.
most of my family don't care some are already on here but the one's that do ask i tell them it is like myspace but with a twist and they usually shut up there i figure if they want to know more they can check it out for them selves
I tell them that this is the family I have choosen. That There are people here that I love very much and would do anything for. Also that some of my best friend I have found on VR And if they don't like it then that's just to bad. I have found my caring and honorable people here then in the real world. I have traveled the world several times with the military and work so I think I know what I'm talking about.
I tell my family and friends that VR is a place to meet great people who happen to share some of the same Interest as myself.
I feel left out, lol. I have never really been asked although they see me on it. They don't think it is unusual to be on a themed website. Most are involved in something somewhere online and would probably come here if they weren't so involved with the MOB. (game)
I am the same my family dont ask me about anything I do. My friends do and I tell them. My family would freak as they dont real go for things like this site. But in the end I dont really care as it is my life and I can do what I please.
It's a great place for all those who want to learn more about the realm of paranormal.
Just your average dark net site for that masses that think vampirism is fun and games, where the community comes to for the sake of mockery. Or so I have seen thus far.
A place where you can barely discern the imitators from the vampires, where a 13 year old can have as much say in anything as an adult...
A dark side myspace with a ratings, and leveling system that by paying for extra perks is part of the action.
Where vampirism is not taken seriously enough...
Eh, I have had my moments. Mostly though I tell them it is a dark myspace site for the masses that have a myspace but prefer a vampiric undertone.
i tell friends and family that i am enjoying this site very much. i prefer the social aspects of this site to myspace which can be closed off and cliquey. i am enjoying my perusal of the data base and more than a few of the conversations i have had here.
My family aren't interested, though my husband rolls his eyes when I get on the computer because he knows exactly what site I am going to be on.
I tell my friends that it sates my thirst for knowledge about vampires and other preternatural things. I tell them I have made some awesome friends from all over the world and it has expanded my horizons by talking to these people.
Generally the response I get is "each to their own" lol.
LOL kartanclan, three members of my actual family are on VR counting me. my mother thinks that it has been really positive for my son meeting peers here and my friends from other sites are thinking of coming here as a "place to relax and unwind".
