Most of the people here are enthused with dark things in some way or another.
My question is: was there one defining moment when you became aware of a love for the darker things in life? Or have you always been attracted to these things?
Was there any one thing that inspired this interest be it movies, or writing, or music, or art?
Movies and books I would say for me, no defining point. just that I liked the Vampiric and monster movies and novels.
Dark is kinda of a harsh sense on the word. But this i think is a general statement of all things non cultural correct.
first I would like to say that I believe that darkness and light are mutually beneficial that there cannot be one without the other and that it all comes from the same energy source. That said I would say that I was born this way and I have always been cognizant of it but not always aware. I believe I truly became aware when I was 8 or 9
I think many people are born with a need to explore the "darker" sides of existence. Though i honestly do beleive that films & music play a great part in bringing people into the culture.
In some respects people are drawn into merely through living there lifes. The amount of pain and anguish for humans has always been moderatly high, maybe we are all infact born already knowing of what we later learn O.o
for a simple answer..books.
but for more complex, id say music, media in general, and a need to express a repressed part of my soul.
In my case, a rather nasty childhood had alot to do with it. I learned very early that adults and peers were not entirely trustworthy, then I realized, neither was Society.
At which point, my anti-social tendencies pretty much led to certain kinds of people gravitating towards me. First satanists, then goths. From the satanists, an interest in spirituality developed, from the goths, the first introductions to gothic-industrial, darkwave etc. A brief sojourn into vampire role play led to the discovery of a local goth-industrial club. More than anything it was the people I met along the way, and the strong drive of common interests and common ground.
I would have to say that I have always had a love of the darker side of life for as long as I can remember anyway.... It is as though I am drawn to it constantly pulled towards the darkness as if by some gravitational force of destiny.. It is who I am through and through and within the everlasting embrace of darkness I am whole.........
Well I have always liked darker things I was brought up that way. But I would have to say I really started when things started to go bad in my life and I stopped wanting to be like my sister and started to find myself so to speak.
Being raised a Catholic did it for me, more specifically Spanish Catholism in northern New Mexico. Every house had special alcolves devoted to some martryr or another - usually a female - who had died a bloody death. Over my grandmother's bedroom door was a statue of a saint who had gouged out her eyes and sliced off her tongue to protect her chastity - she was depicted holding the three objects on a golden platter, as if presenting them to the viewer. When we were kids, my cousins and I would stand on a chair just to rub the bloody orbs and grossly pink tongue. Shite like that was everywhere, like lawn jockeys in the South people had altars on their lawns. The Penitentes are an expecially radical group who carry the cross and indulge in self-flagellation. They've mostly gone underground, but when I was a kid they still held processions on high holy days.
My mom loved horror, and she had no qualms about sharing her stories - real or imagined - with me. There's a picture of Christ in all his bloody glory from the Santuario Chimayo in my portfolio, also a story in my journal: Memories of Mom or why I enjoy the Macabre.
Since I was a small child.
I remember I already used to watch horror movies at the age of two, alone and enjoying them.
Also I felt fascination and envy with Halloween since in Malta it wasn't popular at those times.
UndoneByBeauty,
I can't say that I've ever had a defining moment for 'love', but a general sense built over my lifetime. There was one event which brought me a renewed interest in the occult and specifically vampires, about three and a half years ago, but it wasn't out of love, more fascination, curiousity and perhaps even a little anger.
I have always been interested in the occult, beginning my reading at thirteen, when I used to bunk school to go and read in the local library. We didn't have the internet, so books on the subjects were a precious commodity.
Eventually, life gets in the way and I spent ten years partying and neglecting studies, until as I mentioned, a few years ago.
It seems more that there are a number of inspirations, from old Hammer Horror movies, to books of myth and legend and 'New Age' ideas of angels, crystals and energy works. Smaller events gently nudged me in the direction of being open to metaphysical theories that mainstream science would mock, but yet now are gathering a bit of momentum in popular culture.
The most striking memories are of reading the names of angels and demons and their meanings, roles and descriptions. It's a magical mix of fiction and legend with human experience and interpretation of the world, of god and the universe.
Books and Movies were a deffinite part, but I didnt have just one defining moment. It was a lot of little moments rolled into years.
I don't think it was 'inspiration' but more like curiosity that brought me to this whole subject.
Like any child being told 'not to' read or look at something I guess I just grew keen.
Because most 'Dark' things are steeped in mystisism or mystery, it was a great way to tweak my imagination.
i have been attracted to dark things from birth. I see myself as being destined to have dark things.
I like twisting the imagination of those who dwelling in gray areas, that claim to master the dark. I like to turn the lights down slowly on those who think themselves illuminated. I enjoy candid people, not narrated people( unless they are telling a story) I like the company of blunt, critical people, with dark
Humour, and subtle wit. To lead others into excursions into the dark until they turn back, waiting to hear what others imagined to be there..
Blood Born says it well.
I was lucky enough to have parents that bred me to be open minded- so much so that as I grew older I was more able than some to see the many different aspects of peoples personalities; and they weren't always positive. Early in life, I realized that not all people were good, and I somehow was not devistated. I took this darkness of human nature to just be another fact of life, and perhaps that is where my interest in the "darker" things began.
Although this could have been the reason, I seem to recally that I had always been inclined towards dark works of literature growing up- which spiked immensely upon my discovery of the works of Edgar Allan Poe in the fourth grade. Prior to that, I seemed to prefer the fairy tales with gruesome elements as opposed to ones that only focused on the happily ever after. As I developed, so did my interest in dark literature and even movies.
Maybe it's something one is born with, or perhaps it is a learned trait. It could be no more than the effects of our environment, an odd habbit or a genetic glitch. But I believe that those who can see and appreciate the darker things in life have an advatage to those who cannot- for every light casts a shaddow.
I pick up on those who practice deception, those who blind others for
personal gain/gratification, Some Hide only in shadows, yet this is as far as they are comforted, having read some dark writings (very true to the Noir Tradition complete with crafted plots. As opposed to some sentimental complex that manifest in a brooding character adopted as identity, some like to go so far into the dark that they only shiver a little..
no matter how deep they go, they are prone to exaggerate their account, with some exceptions those people are "guides", They may
not claim to be mystically aligned.. but they will keep you guessing, that groping in the dark, waiting for someone to trip over you gets stale.
I like people who can go into the dark and apply what they experience
to create familiarity to darker applications for Dark Crafts.
Most who say they are "Dark Natured" have betrayed their nature, those who seek notorious titles, are often "too deep for their own good".
One ones persons Shadow, is darkness to another.
dabbler i wonder if your insightful as i am certain you are, my presence and the many facets of me must really keep you busy and guessing when i show up in here. lol I know they keep me busy. But on a grander note I actually agree with what you are saying. It is not noble to pretend more than what you are. And my dear one you are more than you let on to be. *wink* this is in no way meant to offend you I just find your postings iteresting to say the least.
The first dracula movie came out in 1931 The orriginal 1922 nosferatu
and dark shadows ,
That inspired me the most And monster movies like Dr jeckel and Mr hyde, house of dracuala Ababbot and costellia meet frankienstien and draculas daughter that was a very strange movie son of dracula laun chanie jr.
It was the first book I read about vampires....the darkness was always there I suppose, but now its bigger inside of me.
I guess everyone has a different idea of what dark is and I would have to say that the word macabre is the niche I fall under. People never knew I was interested in such things exactly but they knew I was different. I did love horror movies and watched Vampira on tv at a very young age and the movies she hosted. Always was attracted to the paranormal and the unknown while my friends were joining church social groups, lol.
I never went into the senses in that vein though. I don't need that as I am not a very physical person but more mental and always kinda lived in my mind and magick was an interest at an early age but... I didn't get into it really until the 70s. Its kinda like how I love onions and other people hate them...it's just personal taste and I don't think we really know what truly influences all of that. Environment of course but then why does one kid find the darkside appealing and a brother or sister be totally the opposite?
Could it be reasoned that Goth is alluded, rather then presented.
Goths appeal to me, is as someone said above the writing, Mary Kelley, and the writers circles, breaking from the fad novels.
Daring to allude to the underlying human condition, not just the pleasant romantic , but the tragic, and morbid nature.
This thread just keeps getting richer, and richer..
Does darknes always have to be negative and full of dreary, can one not dwell in darkness and still find happiness or is that not truly being dark?
Obviously a person could dwell in "darkness" and still be happy and cheerful. The concept of "darkness" is mentioned in this thread as a generic social concept. Not a personal one. As had been previously stated.
Look at any person laughing during a horror movie, or people having a good time at a death metal concert. The series "Six Feet Under" was dark as hell but it was also funny as all get out.
So, yes, a person who is happy could still be into "dark" things.
This may seem a little strange to some...But I would like to tell a short story about my youth.
I was deemed a satanist when in middle school and throughout high school. Differant cities and atmospheres, society seems to find it nessessary to call the kids dressing in black the "devil worshippers". This always come from a strick religious communicable environment.
Anywho, I was not into the darkness. But, I was focusing on the histories of witchcraft, demonology and the like...But, one morning, I was reading the bible, which in my view is simple studies when learning about both sides of the theologies. I fell asleep with my hand on the bible. When I woke up, the bible...I shite you not, had knife like cuts in the shape of my hand on the front leatherbound cover. I to this day, cannot ascertain why this happened since the marks were not there before hand. I was alone in the house for that five hour time as my family was at work.
Inspiration for the dark interests? Not at all, inspiration for the arcane, yes. I have always been drawn to the esoteric matters, such as alchemy, theology, spiritualism...But the dark? That just comes with the territory on which platform the individual acknowledges for higher learning and the merits thereof. I am a philosopher by thought. You cannot have the light without the dark anologically speaking.
Very true Soulshroude.
Under the definitions given for this topic, though, the arcane interests you listed would also apply. But I see where you're coming from.
I, myself, try to learn about everything. The household I grew up in was very religiously strick in many ways. I was made to go to church three times a week, never missing a service, but I always had the thought that the religions were more or less all the same. So I delved into learning about as many of them as I could. (This included witchcraft and satanism.)
And I am a nut for history, so learning about the origins of different beliefs was one of the things I was naturally drawn to.
When one truly gets down to it, the conceptualized definition of dark being used here seems like a silly label for the interests of most of the people here. But I was using the term in a generalized way.
Some venture out at night to experience something different, others prefer the night because there are fewer people at night. The bonds of a minority are stronger perhaps, then the bonds of the masses.
How one differentiates themselves from those masses.. Though not always as obvious as fashion.. and not even always proclaimed, or acknowledged.
So how does a person that prefers the darkness of night, deduct a person who is only venturing out into the night?
"So how does a person that prefers the darkness of night, deduct a person who is only venturing out into the night?"
Someone who prefers the darkness tends to be completely comfortable with it or in it. Those just venturing out in it, may be nervous, excited, overly alert to every little sound, uncomfortable and even a little frightened.
When you're someone who prefers it, you're probably someone who is out in it alot. You learn the sounds at night, what's normal, what's not, same with smells. You know how to carry yourself in terms of body language.
I was inspired by art. Bright colors have always hurt my eyes, and I never really realized that the darker beauty was what I loved until I saw a painting-I forgot the name of it-when I was 10. It was then that I started to become interested-secretly at first-in the dark things. I started using such colors and themes in my own art, drawing demons, and vampires, and fallen angels, and I even stopped drawing funny and or light pictures for a long while, that is, until I learned to incorporate both themes into my art. Case and point, once I saw that painting that I can't remember, it was downhill from their. My art changed, then I started with the music, finding that the "minor" notes attracted me more than the high notes, and then went the clothing.
I have an older aunt who is into spiritualism; she was always reading palms, cards, and the like. She had an Ouija board, but I was always afraid to touch it. With that said, I was still attracted to 'the dark side'.
Later, I got into all of those old Gothic horror stories, with an emphasis on vampires and people risen from the dead...plus, the relatives into voodoo and Santeria helped along the way.
I was 10 going on 11 and I had read Edgar Allen Poe Collection and I was hooked LOL
I love the mans work he is who got me into things dark, evil, mystical... he is and was my inspiration to explore the Dark Interests.
Partially natural attraction. Partially the people I met: those in black were far nicer than those in pastels. Also, pastels annoy me most of the time. They're so...vomit inducing. Darker things were more seductive than the happy-at-all-times preppy side to life.
I'm not sure if there ever was a defining moment for me. For as long as I can remember, I gravitated to the occult section of the library. I think maybe it was when I read Bunnicula in the 4th grade.
Well stated December N, people that only venture out into the night are put off by what is not around them, that security of active presence.
As long as they are with someone they are "brave", but if asked to wait
in a stationary spot alone, they are hesitant to do so for very long.
Putting people in a pitch black room, and observing them through Night vision, tells a lot about how a person reacts to darkness.
Creating a morbid incident , and watching the candid reaction of those who witness it, is just as telling.
Example, I have spent time with a person who claimed to be a seasoned squatter, gutter punk, we wondered to a shotting gallery (a place junkies go to shot dope) he reacted as if he wanted to be as far away from there as possible, this and his lack of " Skid Etiquette" spoke more then his presentation of himself. He was comfortable in shadows, yet not nessecarily the dark.
Dabbler,
This thread is about interest in dark things. It is not about how dark illegal activities are. Some illegal things are pretty freaking dark, sure, but I didn't ask about people's illegal activites and/or their enthusiasm levels regarding such. Perhaps that could be a thread you might want to pursue, although I am sure you wouldn't have many responses to a thread like that.
*Chuckles* I don't know about that...Something about robbing graves and the smell of the freshly rotten corpses get to me at times. Mmmm, morbid recreation...
One persons dark, is only shadow to others. When a person is abandoned in the dark, their reaction us telling, the spectrum of darkness is relavent to the persons comfort zone, my example is only analogy, yet the response is just as telling.
dabbler,
As already pointed out, your responses really have no relevance to the gist of the thread. Your analogy is also irrelevant. Your response to that challenge to your 'input' seems equally as pointless.
Are you going to be willing to contribute based on the questions posed and the subsequent conversation please?
Inspiration from Darkness, is relavent to the individual. Claiming to be inspired by Darkness is cliché, until one presents what is alledgedly inspired by the person.
Why a person would go around saying "I am a Dark artist." is rather amusing. It should be present in their works. It all seems very backward to me. The viewer is the gauge, not the artist. Now a days people claim to be mysterious, and Dark, the only inspiration I see is fad.
It has been thoroughly stated here that the "dark" mentioned in this thread is a generic social standard, not a personal one. I personally don't find most things dark, but that viewpoint in regards to this thread is irrelevant, as well. I was only curious about interests in things that fall under society's generalized concept of "dark".
I think what the lad was trying to get at, is the generalized concept of the "dark" is the boundary between theology and psychology...Such as evil deeds and the like, what inspires serial killers so much, or the individuals such as myself respectively being enticed to think about morbid thoughts.
Books, movies, and music. I think from an early age, 10 or 11, Stephen King and Black Sabbath have been a constant influence in my life and have left a lasting impression. Their works taught me an appreciation of dark things, an understanding, and a respect for their power. I think my dark interests have had more positive effects on my life than negative.
Earlier till i was 25 I did not believe in these things at all.
but since by 1993 onward the para-psychic happenings made believe me in these things and led to research and analyse the things to answer my qest of para-psychics and i went on the test exercises though i was knowing the dark set of divine yoga exercises from earlier of age of 20 due to my hobby of reading those times. I got one very old book of divine yoga those time which's exercise was quiet aweful. It included the exercises of, david blaine doing it too.
The book i lost accidently but yet i remember them.
I was just an odd ball child. Though I didn't really let anyone know my interest in this things until I got older, the family thought dark things was weird or taboo in a way. I just grew up being interested in the unknown, magic, myths, and monsters.
I was always interested in it even as a kid. I would do things when I was younger that really confused my parents and even myself. As I got older I figured out some things about myself and I have been living the lifestyle since.
For me it was more of a sense of recognition (after the fact). One day I just woke up, whacked myself over the head and thought "duh, why didn't I realize that sooner?" I would have to say my path hasn't changed over the years, my perception of it has.
Peoples guards are effected in the dark, some are relaxed, some are unihibited, still others are hightened to oversesative.
The atraction to shadows, and darkness is as varied as the reasons people fear the light.
i was always somewhat drawn to the dark...the macabre of life/death...
this is perhaps silly, but i think if there was a single thing that tugged at me when i was young....
it was dark shadows.
always thought barnabus collins had style, but didnt understand why he wanted to cure what he was.
~Wolf~
I know this sounds cliche but to be quite honest, I feel that those of us that are attracted to the darker sides of life have always felt the pull. There are of course, the cute little trendy gothic kids that still wear black lipstick, too much black eyeshadow and use white clown make-up to change the color of their skin, but for me, it is soo much more than that. It's like the darkness embraces who I am. I'm not the person that refuses to get up before 5pm, I'm not the person that walks around 34/7 depressed and thinking of suicide. I'm a normal person trying to work and live a normal life. It just so happens that my normal life involves ghost, vampires, black, candles, sconces, red, blood, depth, creativity and passion for music that means something...to me at least.
I was raised in the same environment as UndoneByBeauty and oddly enough I think that is what sparked the interest. You're taught this and that will put your soul at peril and of course, the very thing you tell me to avoid is what I will gravitate towards. I walked the "party line" for years but time and again I indulged in my guilty pleasure of studying the very things forbidden.
The real inspiration I suppose happened when I met my best friend. He shocked my eyebrows into my hairline with some of his thinking but once we got past my initial dismay, he helped me finally sort out what I actually believed vs. what I was told to believe.
Initially I was interested in alternative fashion. I absolutely adored all the different styles of clothing: vicotrian goth, gothic lolita, etc. My vampire obsession was more inspired by literature. I can't even count how many vampire-related novels I have read!
I always been interested in horror movie and books since young age and paintings, and other things which i havent mention but it gives me a great way to express my artistic abilities ......
I mostly agree with Shadow but would like to say that it is in us all to like the darker side of life but we fight it .
Some dont , some just give in and thats why we have so many people killing others and them self.
I say tho that there is some what a balance in things in life in general.
But to see things as they are is a hard thing to do .
Not every thing is as it looks , or reads , or even how it shows its action some times it just takes time for the true nature of a person to come out and say i did i not get you or so you thought you knew all about me but now dont you like me better for what you found out about me and that you took the time to ask and seek out what it was you were looking for in me .
Well as for darker side its not that black and white, you have to look deeper than that if you know what i mean.
Oh, indeed. I was once tempted by the dark side of the force. A good friend of mine was beaten nearly to death and there were some terrible things I wanted to do in revenge. I pulled myself back before I did anything stupid.
I have alwasy been interested in ways by dark things. It got greater as i got older. In the last few years i have reaserched many things realted to this topic and i learned alot. the real turning point was more resent though. i met someone how showed me how to really be myself and showed me to this website.
Like others have mentioned here, there was no “exact” moment that I because truly interested in the Dark, but from an early age leaned towards vampire tales, fairy tales and the morbid ways of looking at things.
Part of this I’m certain comes from a family background in healthcare (when you talk about surgery at the dinner table- you simply don’t view bodies the same way), to my active church life as a young adult. Through both physical and spiritual I grew to see things not quite the same as other people do. I think the supernatural aspect of religion, is a driving force of a general term of dark, as most view it as we are damned unless we find the light- therefore we are innately born “Dark”.
Over time there has been more personal acceptance for my views as age seems to assist with being able to live outside social norms to a greater degree (not that I ever did- this comment is more about being comfortable truly with the ideal of self no need to make it a bigger tangent than I already have). Still I think that most people have a love/hate relationship with the dark as we tend to try to deny our “nature” however it presents itself.
i would like to give an update on what i said before.
I first became aware of the darkside when read about things of the world and how i am not apart of it.
This world has so much evil in it and i want no part of it.
But i am strangle drone to it.
I like horror movies.
I like to know as much as i can about the things of the world but want no part of it.
Is this a reality or am i only fooling myself.
Look i think the thing is i am attracted to the dark but mostly like the good in all of mankind.
I think is just that i want to know all i can and to know or try to know it all can and is a bad thing and can lead deep or deeper than i want to be into the darkness.
Mine was seeing vampire movies etc... Also i never really fit in anywhere it seemed when i was in school.
I new I was attracted to the night and dark When I was 9yrs old. My dad came home drunk and i a bad mood. so I wast he lucky one who received his attention that night. After I climbed out my window and went down to the rock on our private beach. The moon was full and you could see the waves crashing on the rocks and the sound was almost deafening. I sat there til dawn. The whole time I was there It was as if someone was sitting with me that whole time I was there. Ever since I was a child of the might, And love every moment it.
In a general sense, I would say that the human's thirst for knowledge and understanding of the world around him has a tendency to lure him to indescribable depths. The degree of this hunger for understanding varies differently per person. The 'hungrier' individuals tend to explore the darker sides of things and nature more openly than those who prefer to repress themselves and stay within the safe confines of the norms and tradition.
In a more personal context, though I cannot point out a singular event or cause, I would have to say that my interest for 'non-traditional' things probably began with an awareness of the world being more than just roses and sunshine. At quite a young age, I also developed an interest in non-conformity and avoided doing/liking things just because everyone else thought it was cool or fashionable. Thus was manifested in my music, art, movie and literary interests, among others.
I did not want to look differently at all during my life the kins I was in between. But what happens when we start to look into the darkness, it pull us and once we start go per quest, we start loving and fearing dark but the point comes when you stop dearing the darkness, the darkness become our part of life and starts thing that way... you eject from peepal and goes to lonely peaceful places where no predator yet nature with you and you feeling it along with its light side and darkness both...
O yes in day time I love that and in nights I love to see moon moving from east to west and the galaxy of stars.....
I don't view these things as "dark" here. Same coin, different sides. different interests doesn't make it "dark". depends on how one perceives what dark really is.
But i'd have to go with Bloodlife and say curiousity brought me to where i am now based on dreams i've had mostly. I was never drawn to vampirism until certain events so that's my answer. :)
My inpiration for the Darkness came from many years ago. For me, Darkness is beautiful, because there is always something new at all time. Can be for a religious purpose or can be to experiment with the unseen. But to try to touch the Darkness, is not for the soft heart.
For the most part it was movies and books but on the other hand my house it full of skulls and bones and other dark things. I guess i grew up on those things
It was books that got me into Vampires,Ghosts,Werewolves, Jersey Devil, and Mothman. I have always been an avid reader and after a while any show pertaining to paranormal as well as Jersey Devil, Mothman type shows. I would also read anything on the internet as well.
I'm different from my family in that most of them that live here where I do are strict old fashioned baptists and would be saying that I worship the Devil or something all because I am interested in things like the paranormal and vampires. I honestly don't care what they say anymore because they cannot control my life or interests.
For me it's the past, tragedy, loss and those things have inspired the primarily dark poetry you can find in my journal. I think it also cause me to lean towards darker music and horror movies and such. The music and movies are an escape for me. Without music I am pretty sure I wouldn't be here.
According to the WMAP the universe is made up of something like 96 percent dark matter and energy and they don't understand that. According to what I understand in legend was that light sprang out of darkness so darkness has always existed. It is man that created the dividing line and made one positive and the other negative in viewpoint. The word dark is relative really. I don't look at Goth as dark but a philosophical movement that was forged out of a love for a certain style of music but all movements like that have the other side beyond its origins.
For me I had no interest because it was my children who would have been involved in all of that and not me so I don't and never have gotten the connection to certain things. I will leave it to that. I just think it is generational what one will think of as dark. I had a male roommate back in the 70s who saw my book collection and asked if I was a witch, which I am not but some have thought I was a natural witch. I am not into labels so I just shrugged and said no and laughed because to him witchcraft was dark. I personally don't think of witchcraft as being dark at all so it's relative to how you view things. It seems to me that many think of darkness to be dealing with things unknown that oppose the common view of religion. What is dark to one person is commonplace to someone else. Many things are tied to the view of what evil is. Obviously there have always been those who could walk that road such as in the case of the executioner or mortician.
I would say mostly movies and books but i also forgot i had friends in high school that were into wiccan and wearing dark clothes and vampires as well.
I have always been interested in Vampires..Really didnt get into as much then as I do now and have been for 9 yrs now..I guess alil of all.Movies, books, ppl..To me it was when I discovered the internet and a whole hew world for me..This was when I dicovered who and what I was, didnt know but always knew I was different..This is how I feel and see it
I have to be honest... My inspiration came from my true love... Whom I miss everyday... She's a goth, and so am I, (just so you know) and my inspiration has also been a part of me for a while. I always wanted to be goth, but I was never inspired to do it. So, I met the most enchanting women of mylife, who inspired me to become what I am today, and I thank her for it... I hope this is a good enough answer... ^_^
My earliest recollection of what drew me to things that are dark in nature was reading Edgar Allen Poe. I got hooked after reading his work. It then transferred onto movies and a love of horror. Also events in my life has inspired me to write dark poetry. That is more of a manner of self-therapy to excise those feelings.
Back in teh mid 70's when I was just starting school here in Canada when I was 5, I saw this show called the little house of Frightenstein.
It is the best show ever.
It doesn't seam all that bad 30 years later but to a 5 year old in the 70's it was more scary than campy. In fact... As an adult it is about half disturbing, half campy.
Check it out on Youtube. I have links and more info on my profile.
No it has always been that way since I can remember I think if anything did it might have been my teenage brothers waking me uup and sneaking me down stairs on fri and sat night after my parents went to bed to watch the old class b horror flicks with them on late night tv when I was like 4 and 5
My dark nature started when a friend of mine got me reading Dracula and from there my interest in Vampires grew from there
