Do you typically find that people slam you simply for asking them about your rate?
I am a very curious person. If you rate me below an 8, I am going to wonder why? If there is something on my pages bothering multiple people, I want to correct it. That is all. I am not a glory hound and I don't ask them to change the number. All I ask for is the reason.
Now, if someone rates a decent profile below a 5...that usually means they rated you low for having nothing on your page, but not always.
Recently, I asked...Got a slamming hateful letter. And then the person actually wrote something in his profile about it.
Is this common? Or am I being rude to ask at all?
I suppose it would all depend upon the member that has rated you, in my expirence of asking about rates i have had some polite answers but some have been like 'I couldnt be bothered to read your pro' so its can get nasty.
Basically, this one said mine was too long and he didn't wish to read it...That is what the right-hand scroll bar does. It is a rather wonderful fast forward for people who don't want to see a profile so much as rate it.
I hate scroll boxes. Most look tacky. I can't get the navigation boxes I like working properly. I haven't had much time to play with them, but the way they are wrote and the way they are showing up are incompatible. I am sure it won't confuse me forever. However while it is confusing me, I don't have many options I can use for shortening the page.
I recently received some very helpful comments from a senior member who I asked for a re-rate. I see nothing to lose from asking why someone gave a low rating -- if they respond with hostility, that says more about them than it says about you.
If somebody asks about my rate I refer them to my profile, it explains my reasoning as well as can be. The only time I get unpleasant is if the person is disrespectful in some way. I can get a little ticky if I see that the person JUST rated my profile and then asks me since, as I said, it's explained in there.
Personally i dont give a rats ass what my profile is rated, simply because people take rating's to seriously. It matters not what you get because it affects your account in no way shape or form.
As for someone slamming you because you asked WHY they rated you so low, i wouldnt take any notice. The Dark Network is full of Cranks. Rough with the smooth. Take it in your stride, Just get on with things?
Lol, i'll rate you a 10 to make up for it.
Most of the time they block you because they know you will ask why the low rate...they are childish.
They also block you because they have no legitimate reason to rate you low or even block you.
I've had that happen to me about twice. I personally think that it's annoying why they won't even reply or reply saying something harsh then block you and write something mean in their journal.
If I rate someone and they ask why I would gladly give them a reason and if they want to give me a revenge rate... Oh well, that's life!
I must say that I always respond honestly when asked about how I have rated someone's profile. I have my own criteria, which I won't get into here, but if I give you a "7" and you ask me why (politely..not a message of WTF is with the 7?) I will provide constructive criticism based on what I like / expect to see in a profile. 9 times out of 10 my rate will increase just by looking at the profile again.
People who respons rudely to requests for feedback have some agenda of their own, in my opinion. They likely are rating just to rate without regard to content (blasting through giving everyone a 7 for instance), or they are hoping to elicit responses so that they can feel they have 'power" over those who they have rated.
VR is full of a varied group and all you can do is behave the way YOU think is best.
Usually people put their rating scales on their profile or in their journal.
When people ask me why I rated them what I did, I tell them to read my profile.
If they complain and whine about it, I tend to get a bit annoyed.
It is not uncommon to get slammed if you don't read someone's profile to make sure they have their rating scale on there and ask that question.
Its clear that those who send spiteful and nasty messages to others, as a result of a number on a website which is effectively meaningless to real life, are lacking something of value in their life offline, which causes them to place far too much significance upon that number.
The same can be said about those who have nothing better to do with their time, than to provoke others into negative feelings because they know that the rating number has value for them.
If someone is civil and polite to another, then the only reason to be offensive in return is to find self-satisfaction in that reaction. If you are unable to rise above these situations, then you might find that the world is a very harsh place indeed.
There are all sorts of misunderstandings in the world and most people have a spectrum of people that they will not work things out with. It would be wonderful if that were not so, but it is.
Usually not wanting to work something out stems from a superiority complex... something about your character that they have judged you on and they feel superior to you about.
It's not entirely your fault that you don't meet their standard. Their standard may not be based on things that you value.
Yet.
Or you may never come to value some of the things they value, and/or some of the things they value may be ... "misguided."
Never having asked anyone about the how and why of rating my own profile I can only go by what other people have written in their journals etc.
It would seem that some people simply cannot be polite or offer constructive comments, such people are best ignored.

I agree with this summary.
First of all you are a premium member . A premium member should never receive less than a 9 from ANYONE!
I would also suggest that all should click and then read "The Imortals" tab on the left hand side of the page. For those of you who still do not get it it means when a higher status member rates you this counts more than if a whelp rates you.
Next, I do not respond very well to the beetle dung who who will rate a premium member less than 9.
Actually, Premium Members aren't above the rating rules.
A valid rate is 1 through 10. Regardless if you pay for features or not.
I've seen some pretty awesome profiles from free members and some pretty crappy profiles from Premium Members.
It is your own business if you message someone wanting criticism. At least you are making the attempt to better something. If they can't be mature and give you a reason why they rated you like that, then that is them.
Even if I go on one of my "I'll rate whatever number my mouse lands on" things....I'm at least honest and tell them that is what was going on. lol
I feel what ever i get rated is what i get rated. I dont worry and i am not going to ask why they rated me low.
But i have had it in reverse where i gave a low rating and the message I received slammed me for giving a low rating
What many of you said here, I also agree with; particularly with what Blackhawk said:
I feel what ever i get rated is what i get rated. I dont worry and i am not going to ask why they rated me low.
I will add that when I first joined VR, it took me awhile to figure out HTML and other functions to even get a profile up. I had a lot of really low rates for awhile. Things improved over time. Still, I don't and won't bother with asking any of the old low raters for a re-rate.
I usually rate profiles a 9 or a 10, as I see them as reflections of a person's life - who am I to judge with a 'downrate'? (Well, if a profile is under construction or really bad in my eyes, I won't rate it at all...I can always stumble upon it later to rate that 9 or 10).
I admit to rating the average, on profiles that make me question the persons
reasoning for being on the site, other members who contribute time, and effort are slide back by the " bleeding heart", "everyone gets a trophy" raters. or I actually avoid rating such fodder profiles all together.
Before this continues....
A valid rating is between 1 and 10 with 1 being the lowest score and 10 being the highest. How you choose to rate a profile is totally up to you. Different members will have different criteria for profile rating.
Downrating does not exist as an issue. You are simply rated lower than a 10 and don't like it. If downrating were an issue or against Vampire Rave's TOS - All numbers would be removed except for 10.
If you think that someone has been banned for "downrating" you are wrong. The only time you may have seen someone banned for a reason related to this is, they were creating multiple free accounts (Which IS against VR's TOS) and then using them to rate members. The rate is not what violates the rule, it is the creation of multiple free accounts.
Now the OP is asking a good question and perhaps we should all consider two things.
1. We could stand to be a little more polite when asked for our reasoning. It is not a challenge to our rate but perhaps a simple question as to why it was given.
2. No one is required to give a reason. Leaving a comment is optional. If you press a person to give you a reason, they have every right to be annoyed and block you.
I completely disagree with not asking for a rerate after you have improved your profile. I think that most people would like to see other members improve and would enjoy knowing the profile is ready for a revisit.
Apparently, there are some who disagree and acted on their thought, such as they are. In any event enjoy your 1's.
As far as premium membership is concerned it is really the PM's who support VR through their wallet and not through lip service
Dabbler...I actually did ask that question as a newbie to a few, since my profile was void...LOL!
I figured out later that the 10 rates were 'to get me started' and of course I appreciated them...still strange to me though, is when people rate profiles that aren't even completed...
But hey - we all have our own standards.
Dabb, I've actually been asked why I rated someone a 10 before lol and I've seen on several profiles something along the lines of "My profile isn't worth a 10 or even an 8 so please rate fairly".
LF, I'm sure those who rated you gave a fair rating to their standards, I know I did. If you rate someone a 1 just because you didn't get a 10 that's fine but the notion that you (or anyone) deserve a higher rating just because you paid money is laughable. Whatever Cancer says is right or wrong where VR is concerned, well, that's right or wrong. And Cancer says you don't deserve a 10 just because you paid money, and you don't and neither do I.
I pay taxes and get funny tasting tap water, I pay VR and get 1-10's. A "trophy for everyone" isn't how the world works nor should it.
Honestly, no one really rates "fairly".
If that was the case, my profile would have a hell of a better rating score. No offense to anyone else out there.
It is a matter of objective opinion. And everyone knows the thing about opinions.
When you purchase a Premium Membership, you are buying what is listed on this page: Premium Membership
You are not buying the right to be rated only what you want.
NymzanSusauren asked:
Do you typically find that people slam you simply for asking them about your rate?
I reply:
No, I actually don't find this to be typical. Then again, I don't often ask why someone rated me lower than I wanted. What I typically find after going to their profile, is that I rated them low based upon content and, in return, I got a low rate. I figure, this is just petty revenge rating and move on. Now, I do often wonder to myself why someone with nothing on their profile is rating me low considering all the work I've put in my profile but I don't generally ask why - Honestly? I just don't care.
LordFangor stated:
A premium member should never receive less than a 9 from ANYONE!
I reply:
Like many others, I disagree with this statement. If premium members were meant to receive only 9's or 10's from other members, those would be the only options available for premium members. As they're not, it is obvious we are subjected to the same rate system as everyone else. Plus, I have actually seen many premium profiles with nothing on them, or nothing more than quizzes. Why does that deserve a 9? Ooh...someone knows how to copy/paste. So what?
I don't even care for that, buuut people are so childish with that matter, its just funny how they whine for a simple rating. I stopped answering why low rate a looong time ago, as if "7" or "8" is a low rate o.O?? Is just useless to explain idiots that i don't like it as much as to give it a "10".. How can I improve my profile to get a better rating?, GTFO! like you need to please the whole VR to be a "10".. people need to seriously grow-up, last time i checked this wasn't a popularity contest, maybe im wrong.
whether or not a person has their rating scale posted or not unless the person asking about the rate is rude there is no reason to get rude or hateful because they asked. I'm sure most everyone on the site has or will at one time or another rated a profile without reading it completely. I find it hard to believe that anyone would read every word on 15k+ profiles some will get skimmed or even skipped to the end rate and move on. By the same token even if someone never gives you a reason that is their right and they shouldn't be berated as a result. If you think the reason they gave is stupid it's still there right to rate how they want. We should be able to agree to disagree and I know that's not always easy. I don't generally ask someone why they rated me what they did unless its below a 7 sometimes I will ask on a 7 or 8 if they have little to nothing on their profile. I ask trying to find out if there is something that I can improve not as a challenge to their rate It is impossible to make a profile everyone will like but just because you don't like someones profile doesn't mean you should be rude or hateful. I have had both positive and negative replies from asking about why someone rated me the way they did. There are some people that are just not happy and they think everyone else should be as miserable as they are. When I rate I tend to be very generous unless a persons profile is rude, hateful or generally offensive. I will admit I tend to skim profiles and read the parts that catch my eye. That is one of the main reasons I am very generous in my rates. I don't post in the comments what I rated so non-PMs have to ask what I rated them so I expect them to ask what and why I rated them. I also do not mind questions from PMs that I rate. That's just me I mean part of this sites function is as a social network so lets all be sociable to each other and have fun.
Wolvie™
X' grand summary an 8 for sure.
Some are more concerned with ratings, then they are with presentation,
I show up to a formal event in casual wear, ( should I be concerned when I get ' chilled social reception'.
If I show up to a casual event in shabby clothing, I can still be accepted,
But not embraced socially. If I looked at ratings as glances.. Then I seek candor, people that have socio pathic tendencies stand out, and are usually
Sunk by their own volley.
People are obvioysly taking Ratings TO seriously. They are a superficial form of online "popularity" on VR. 1 is a vaild rate. PM's DO NOT DESERVE to be above the rating system. You do not contribute ALL of VR's cash. the advitisments bring in the green to you know so take that chip from your shoulder.
Have a nice day.
As you'll note from some members profiles (some list their criteria for rating), everyone has different opinions and needs. If you're trying to please everyone with your profile changes, when is it going to be the way you want the profile to look? Create the profile the way you would like to present it. Anything else takes away your individualism and creativity. Do you really want to be like everyone else, or do you want your profile to stand out as different? You will never please everyone with your profile layout.
Also, as stated above, A valid rate is 1 through 10. There are no rules for rating posted anywhere on the site. It's your choice to accept the rating you receive for what it is, or question the member and makes changes to suit other members needs for your profile. If you're trying to create it to other members needs, is it really yours?
Asking about improvements you could make doesn't mean you have to sell yourself out in the process. If I ask someone that rated me low and they say they hate the X-Men and comics I'm not going to change anything. If they say the color combination I have in an area makes it hard to read I'll check it out and see if i think so and if I'm not sure i might even ask a few other people before I decide to make any changes or not. It may be a matter of organization, readability and the like as opposed to substance that some people don't like and you can change those without compromising who you are. With the new status system rates do effect your status and if you care about your status then higher rates can be important to you as it gives a bonus to your status. by the same token being rude and nasty to people will get you blocked and more than 5 block gets you a penalty to your status. If you piss off too many people and you block them all in return you get another penalty. So being nice now goes a long way to helping your status on the site and benefits everyone. Does that mean you have to like everyone and kiss their ass NO!, just be courteous and agree to disagree.
Everyone says they don't mind what they get rated, but if rating wasn't important there wouldn't be a "The Top" column on the left. I take a lot of pride in doing a good job on my profile. I always like when people leave constructive criticism. Today's low rating was because my profile made their computer freeze... Sure I have no idea how that is my fault, if they have an old computer, but they were extremely nice about it, and didn't get all snooty so what's done is done...
It happens very often. I tend to ask people and a few times you think I asked them some filthy unspeakable question that offended their whole family line from the beginning of time... People always like to think THEY are right, and when you question it they get defensive...
As for revenge rating, I have been known to do it only because it states in my profile, that if you can't leave a reason why you rate low, expect a revenge rate...
Just know you can't please everyone... I had gotten a 1 and when I went to check on her profile they deleted it...
I had an issue awhile back with someone who rated a 1 then blocked me after I rated a 10 on their profile and an 8 in their portfolio, to this day I don't know what I did, but after this has been going on for awhile, I said forget this and just gave them a 10... Luckily the gesture was returned. All I can say is that every so often, just change your name (if it gets bad enough) and start over....
:)
Ahh....Yes, even here in VR we get some of those people who need attention, and they get the attention by giving a profile a low rating. Probably they didn't read the whole profile. For me, the rating of a profile is measure by the character of the reader. If you get someone who got no character, then, you can expect the worse. About the blocking to avoid a response, happen every day. And now, with the new status system, if you get too many block, will affect your level. So, solution, I don't see one. Do you??
Yeah the worst and most childish behavior is to put your peers to rate the one that gave you "one" to revenge rate them "one" back in group as if they were cybernetically attacking me, haha! I personally experienced that with alot of "premis" babies in the site, mostly those with given "powers" makes it even funnier, and also to put the response comments about:"why your rated me one" in your journal to show your peers what he/she reply to the "unjust" rate, seriously a waste of life..
*sighs in frustration*
Honestly, I don't think even half of you understand the point of this thread. I don't care what my profile rate is...I don't. I am not whining about that. Periodically, I check my rates the same as I do rating profiles, database entries, etc. It is just part of the whole VR thing. If it is below a certain number (and not even 10, 9, 8, or 7), I ask why. I am curious. I don't want my profile to look awful, as I work on it a great deal. If it is something I can change that several people didn't like, I do so. Simple...
None of this is the real reason behind this thread. If I could get a Navigation menu up and working, I could shorten the page for the morons that can't be bothered to read.
What seriously bothered me was being talked to hatefully (and in bad english form...talk about insult to injury) for a polite question that I would send to anyone. Granted, I did send him a second message telling him he was being rude and childish before I blocked him, but I didn't do anything to piss him off. He just blew up on me.
P.S. I do have quizzed on my page. I moved all of them off with the exception of my two favorites. The only reason I left them on there is due to the informative (and accurate) nature of these two quizzes. They tell more about me than a long-winded, storybook version. So they stay...
eh, I could really care less about being rated by anyone other than the fact that ratings now boosts levels. I rate all members of VR because it helps me to grow in status.
If the individual seems snobbish in rate or message, then I will rate them lower for simply complaining about their rate in a crass manner.
As well, ~Fangor's~ snobbish comments were uncalled for and proving the thread posters point in a nutshell about conflict and the rating system, well done ~Fangor~!
Rate what you want, how you want and when you want. That is why there is a 1-10 system. Dont be shy to rate what you "feel" other members should have. It is personal opinion most times. Dont be afraid, or paranoid about what others rate, or the whiplash you may recieve from rating others.
After all, any member "can" re-rate at any desired time.
Nym I understand exactly what you mean and the new status system should begin to change the way some people act in those regards. Unfortunately there will always be a few malcontents that will try to piss in everyone's Cheerios no matter what it costs them. There are some people that thrive off of conflict and drama and I'm sure when they start getting the negative effect under the new status system they will be the first ones complaining and crying how much they are a victim, when in reality they are the instigator. The good thing is you didn't let them drag you down to their level because it is to let someone do that.
Usually I tend to rate people with a ten unless their profile is plain crappy. A lot of the times, if I have rated someone low, I do get a hostile question, after which, I simply reply with, "Look at my rating section on my profile, and you'll understand."
I tend to read entire profiles, considering my curiosity of the unknown (and that includes the people on this site that I do not normally talk to) and so, I tend to overlook the fact that some profiles are very long, and just grin and bear it. It's always interesting to me to learn about new people. The only times I really rate lower than a ten is when someone just has not tried (it's usually obvious) or when I cannot read what is written. Generally, though, if the person is polite, then I give suggestions on what I think could work better, and re-rate them when it's fixed.
i admit it ...i use both numbers of the binary system...a "1" and a "0" lol . if someone gives me less than a 10, i dont often get annoyed...but if they give me a 1 or 2, i would really like for them to leave a message as to why.
face it...some people are rectums in shoes.
~W~
I personally put in a lot of effort into my profile. If I am rated below 7 yes I would like to know why.
The problem with rating now is that it affects your status level. When some nasty piece of work gives you a 5 just to be a jerk. Then that affects my rating score which in turn drops my status level. I have had that happen on a second profile when a charming person rated me a 5 for no good reason other than to tell me it was well within his right to rate me that. Which is fair enough. But I dropped a whole level that I had worked on the previous night to achieve... so I had to start all over again!
When if affects your status level I think it is unfair to rate so low. Just my humble opinion of course.
I hardly ever rate, so if someone asks me to re-rate most probably I'd ignore.
Many expect to get a 10 from everyone and that it impossible. People care too much about ratings when the site has much more to offer.
Yes but with the new status system there is a reason to care about your rating... as it affects your status level. I am sure you will be rather pissed if you drop a complete level you worked hard to obtain because some nasty piece decided to rate you low.
I've had a couple to rate me 1's for whatever reason. I just simply return the favor because i find it fair. I never rate anyone below a 7, not even the newcomers. I give them time to actually work on it and rerate them later should they want. I personally don't care about the rating. There's too much drama on here being created by it. It may be fun for some to want to keep striving to get to the top of things but i'm not here for that reason. I don't think there's anything wrong about asking why, but as said above, if they become hostile about a question, then there's something mentally unstable about them, or maybe they feel they will get attacked for the rate they chose to give you and feel too defensive about such an approach. I'd say just don't let little things like that bother you and get on with life.
Im sure, it is all in the approach. By now, people should understand there is a possibility someone may ask why you rated them as you did. And why shouldn't they? If someone cared enough to even ask, then they have a right to know.
There have been the occasional instances where someone has rudely asked me to re-rate, or just plain lost their marbles because they didn't get a ten. To these people, I either ignore or blast, depending on my mood and how far they go.
As already stated, "It says more about them..."
I didn't ask for a re-rate, or even a change of the number.
All I wanted was a reason. If you rate someone from a 0 to a 5, you should be willing to give a reason if asked. Like Rogue says, it drops your VR score. If he hadn't wanted to give me a reason, he could have ignored my post. He didn't.
Wolvie, I don't think he cares. He purposely pointed out his profile score bragging that it was so low and he didn't care in the least. I think it amused him. Perhaps he is one of those assholes trying to get a 0 on his profile rating just to see if it is possible.
The worst part is he mentions the fact that I asked him on his profile page making everyone who reads it think I was harassing him, or something. I didn't.
This thread is about how some may respond when asked why they rated someone what they did.
The purpose of this thread is not so everyone can complain about what they are rated or how they go about rating others.
Stay on topic.

This is about how people are rude to you when you ask for a rerate. Ok…when did VR become the place of sweet, understanding, and polite group we all think it should be? Face it folks- there are rude, hateful people on this site. There are people who take that little number beside their screen name serious and treat people like crap. There is also those people who push and push and when a person pushes back with a strong comment they become the “victim” of the whole drama.
If you do not truly care about your rating then why even go back and ask why they gave you the rate? You care- you went and asked- and that opens you up to rude comment. Why? Because it is human nature and the rating system is a hot spot for bringing out that part of our feeling of “No one loves me.”
Get real= the number on the bottom of your profile means nothing because it is made up by people who will give you a one because you pissed someone off, or the font is pink, or something as stupid. Move on, don’t care, and don’t worry about it. If you do- then guess what? You are going to get rude comments if you question them.
Now that I had my say…. Who has not given me a ten yet?
LOL Just kidding- please, don’t even come see my profile. I am happy the way it looks and that is all that matters in my book, not what others think or say about it. It is my profile and I am the only one who has to give it a ten.
NS-
I think the bottom line is, you have every right to ask if you feel you should have been rated higher or if you want to know if something is wrong. As long as that person doesn't have their rating preferences on their profile, there shouldn't be a problem. You're always going to have those people that hand out 1's for stamping, or just 1's period...or never give tens. Wanting to improve your profile is not bad. Just don't feel like you've done something wrong for asking. As it was put earlier "it's not you, it's them".
Well, thanks anyway...I was a little miffed when I made this thread. I am generally a nice person, so I don't understand being hateful just for the fun of it.
And dear ms. Senatorian...I really don't care about who likes or dislikes my page. I DO care about my profile level though, so I go back and ask.
It isn't because I think myself 'little ms. popularity' as the guy suggested. Just because I happen to want to make Sire someday, preferably soon.
personally i think the rating system is used differently by every member and they have the right to rate what ever i never ask why cause i can usually figure it out by looking and reading their profile. and if someone asks me why i rate them what i did i will tell them with the same attitude they gave me if they are polite i will be polite and if they are rude then right back at them
i honestly never really cared what i was rated because unless they tell me in the little comment box i don't know and i really don't want to know and by not knowing i stay happy but if i could see what everyone rated me i wouldn't give a care. ratings show nothing except what people thing of your profile its not like they are actually rating you as a person and even if some thinks they are they can kiss my butt.ratings are just a way for people to try and show they have power over you when you don't like a rating you gave them or ask them why they gave you what they did. So honestly i would have to say even if it effects your status just don't give a care and you won't get slammed.
Now that everyone can see what they are rated using the dashboard, I am sure there will be more people asking why they got what they got. Everyone is going to have their own way of rating. I think the new system will make people take more time to read profiles and rate more fairly than they used to.
i don't think your asking is rude at all -- I do the same ;
I think my profile is pretty good --
I get rated 1's a lot because I'm a Satanist or something
pisses people off -- I wouldn't change anything - they
can kiss my ass --
My profile reflects who I am -- I won't change anything ///
I am completly the same, if I get a rating I don't feel is appropriate, I ask and most of the time I get a polite answer but a few times I have got some real nasty ones, people have even blocked me over it.
I've had people rate me a one just because they didn't like my music...
They've rated me a one to get themselves higher to the top...
I've also been rated ones just for being a soldier or for having an opinion that they didn't agree with.
Well, I'm not going to slam someone into telling me the reason as to why I get a low rating.
If they message me to tell me the rating they give me. I will ask them why and if they won't tell me that is fine also.

RE: memnoch123
I personally don't dig Satanists myself, but I won't rate a person badly just because a whole slew of them once tried to kill me for seeing something...terribly illegal on their part. It isn't like I ran to the cops on them, but they didn't like me regardless. I could have gotten them in trouble. Obviously, that was reason enough.
Things like that are not enough to make me even drop one point off of your page. Just because I don't like it doesn't mean your profile doesn't look wonderful. I refuse to imitate assholes and idiots simply over a slight prejudice that has nothing to do with you. Has nothing to do with your religion either if you get technical. It is based solely on a very unpleasant memory on my part (almost getting killed, not what I saw).
In which case, if I acted like the rude, intentionally childish people of VR...I guess I see why you would get a 1. I have heard from several of my gay male friends and acquaintances that people slam mail and low rate them simply for saying they are gay. I severely doubt any of the folks rating them will ever see them in person, so why do they care what they do in their bedrooms? I don't see the gay folks on VR rating straight people a 1 just because they don't like THEIR sexual preferences, so why in reverse? It just odd to me.

Always thought low rates were a backassward ploy to start a conversation, so with one exception I've never contacted anyone. My opinion of my profile is what matters to me.
Went premium when I joined my first House. Didn't change a thing on my profile, but my ratings went up. At least those raters have both read and remembered the Premium benefits, but what a bunch of brown nosers! I occasionally get someone who feels compelled to reveal their absurd hangups in the comment area, but at least they're not hypocrites.
I believe that the curious should not be scorned for asking questions. So depending on the way the question was posed to the person you are fully in the right.
We have a diverse group of people here and some really have no desire to answer the question. It is just as much their right to avoid the question as it is for you to ask it. Some people get defensive and snappy. Others just ignore it all together because they don’t want to get into a back and forth discussion where they feel the necessity to justify their rating. Comments are optional which leads me to believe we really cannot expect everyone to give us their time and attention to qualify their rate. The system is simply not designed to mandate it.
If I am asked I will usually tell them why. Occasionally I have hit the wrong number :) not meaning to give the person what I did. One called me a low-life.......you know. We talked it out and it got straightened out. I have no other rating scale than I don't rate by length or style of the profile. I look at what amount of work the person put into creating it. It's a representation of that person and not me. How can I judge for someone else what is too long or too anything. It does annoy me when they get them too wide but if they put a lot of work into the overall they get the good rating. I am always happy to tell people if I give them a 7 or 8 or lower which isn't often. People should know if they only have an avatar or pic and two lines or say, ask me if you want to know they will only get token 10s from a few. If they want to know why I won't slam them but will usually say why and ask if they need some help, if they know how to put things up. Sometimes that is all that there needs to be said and I direct them to the member articles and usually we become friends.
A rate 1,2,7,8,9, and 10's and as nobody ask me why I rate them a 10 I don't plan to answer why i gave a 1, because the most common answer may be: "i dont like some/many things in your page", thats all one can say without getting so technical, but the notion that people take this rating system so serious to ask why I rate them lower seriously snap my nerves, and to prevent from"slamming for stupid question" ignorance works delightfully. -A slight side'note- Being judgmental is not bad, its something avoided by the ones that hate the "truth", not everybody is the same, that said you don't have to embrace everything, just as one cant expect the same from others. And for those to respond: "yeah but you have to respect/be polite with others", thats BS.. "morals" is something you've programmed to fit in the norm, I don't need to be polite or respect nothing, but one can remain silent at the times of certain required behaviors, logically to avoid wasting time...
I think that regardless of what your rated. You are entitled to ask why the rate was low. How else are you going to improve upon yourself if you can't politely ask why.
If your going to be rude when you ask then you get what you deserve, but if your polite there is no reason why two human beings can't discuss like adults the where, why and how behind the rating.
Wow this is a very controversial topic isn't it. If I have been down rated in the past, I have always politely asked the question why, I take care to phrase the question as friendly as possible. Although getting a polite answer has not always happened.
At that point I realise that the person is out to upset people and I don't allow myself to be dragged into their childishness. Some do it for a reason, like a page taking to long to load... or they are just doing it out of spite... which unfortunately speaks to the majority. NOT all just the minor few out to cause chaos.
If a person works hard and takes the time to create a nice profile, then they they have the right to care how they are rated.
I understand everyone has their own opinion when it comes to rating--but there are those who rate low (for no apparent reason other than to goad others) and don't even have the courage to leave any remark--a constructive one as to why they did rate low. That is what irritates me more than anything--if you truly believe the low rating you are giving, then have the guts to stand behind it openly.
What even irks me more is when the rater is a Whelp and they have only two to a few lines on their profile and I've rated them higher than they did me. LOL
I've given up on writing people about what they rated me and why. I find a low rating (or a rude comment back from someone) is not really worth getting upset over, NymzanSusauren.
And, your profile is nice enough that with some of your other friends re-rating you, you should eventually make up for that low rating. VR is supposed to be fun and a place you enjoy visiting. You can't let a few bad eggs ruin your day. Life is too short.
I have only asked one person in the past why they rated me what they did...which was a 3. I got a nasty response back and was told to quit crying like a little b*tch and then she called me a...ummm...well, you'll have to read my profile to see what she called me. Then I got blocked.
I don't ask why anymore because it just doesn't matter to me. I'm not here to have the top rated profile. I'm here because this is for the most part, a social networking site and I'm trying to be somewhat social.
Granted, I would LOVE to get 10's all the way across the board but it's not going to happen so I just don't worry about it.
I think if you get rated something that you disagree with and you want to ask why...then ask. It's up to the rater as to whether or not they wish to respond and if they do, be prepared because you just might not like the answer you get.
My life is too short to worry about why "thevampirebob" slapped a 2 on my profile :)
It does make you question why, but I do not mind at all nor do I ask. I only came to this dazzlign site to talk to indiviuals who I can share intelligence with.
I never ask about low comments. I honestly don't care if someone has rated me low because I didn't meet their standards. I am content with my profile, the rating on it is up to them. What irritates me is when new people with premium accounts rate me back what I gave them. If they would read my profile and how I rate, they would understand why I gave them what I did. However I do agree it is very rude of a rater to blow up at the person they rated for simply asking the rater why they gave that person the rating they did.
Well I know for myself that if someone asks me for a rerate I will go back and rerate and if they ask whey i didn't give a 10 I will answer them, most times its because there is nothing there what so ever or there is so much that it caused it to take forever in a day to load.
It doesn't intimidate and these days I see who rates me what on my dash quicker than I do looking at the pm bar up top. What really kills me is an idiot who thinks so highly of himself that he has to tell the world that he acted like an idiot. I mean, putting it on his page was a touch much.
Kudos to the stupid people...this one takes the cake.
I used to ask after rates lower than a 7, but I either got no reply at all or a very rude one. My reason for asking was to see if there was anything they could suggest which might improve my profile but now...well, I'm happy with the profiles I create and I figure that's the main thing. If someone sees fit to rate me with a lower number just because the profile isn't to their taste - who am I to question that?
I do however, love getting messages asking why I've rated such-and-such, if written politely anyway. I relish giving constructive feedback but I don't like giving it unless asked, so it's a perfect opportunity for me to help someone out.
The only time I will retaliate a low rate is if someone with next to no effort made on their profile rates me a 1- then they get 1 back. But usually I don't rate at all if the profile isn't worth a 10 to me - less hassle that way!
In my opinion it's never rude to ask about your rating.
You can fill your profile anyway you want, as long as you follow the guidelines. Every person has a different taste and you can't please everyone.
For the most part I try to be fair..I give ALOT of 8's and 9's..and the rare 10
and yes I do get the occational "Why did you give me a 6? 5? 8? etc" and my usuall response..and reason for that is simply that either A. they say NOTHING about themselves. The purpose of a "Profile" is to show a glimpse of yourself to the world..to tell people who you are..what you're about. and a simple "Hi my name is Billy Bob" or "Bobbie Sue" "Rate me, Bite me..etc etc" doesn't really accomplish that does it? or..
B. they overkill on the pictures, quizes, icons or that stuff. Don't get me wrong I like that stuff and yes it does show a glimpse but it also 1) drags down the entire experience of the profile and 2) I feel too much of that takes away from the person..I want to hear in their own words what they wana say..not from Bella or Edward or whoever the person has the hots for this week.
I don't mean to be harsh or overcritical..I'm just one of the few people who ACTUALLY do read people's profiles and want to hear what they have to say..not just skim down and give a quick rate..that's not fair to them or myself
There have only been 4 or 5 people who have messaged me and politely asked me for a re-rate which I have done. To those mature people I always have responded with a "thank you for being mature" message. I don't like confrontation and I hate arguing with people, but if you nicely ask me why I rated you how I did or if you would like a re-rate, I'm more than happy to go back and re-rate. I don't think I've ever asked anyone why they rated me low, but when I go back to look at the their profile, it's usually someone who I rated low when they first joined the site and had little to nothing on their profile. I've learned to accept the fact that there are people on here who are just plain idiots and don't care about anyone but themselves.
It all depends on how they ask.
I find if you ask someone nicely to re-rate you, they usually do. If you ask them in a vicious way, then they respond in kind
Me, I don't like rudeness so if I rate someone less than a 10, it usually means they don't have very much on their profiles and I leave a comment with my stamp to let me know when they have updated and I will gladly come back. Now if they rudely comment, I go back and they get a permanent 1. There are ways to ask for a re-rate without rudeness or spitefulness.
After reading through this again, I have to say I agree with Dabbler, Morrigon and Nicnivian had to say.
Being a premium member doesn't entitle us to having a high rate at all. Sure we have more features, but that doesn't mean we aren't going to just slap a background on it and a few hundred pictures and say oh look I made a profile and expect 10s from it.
That is exactly what some people do, with no effort at all and swear they deserve 10s. Wrong. But then again neither do those new profiles etc with nothing on them deserve 10s.
Abstract and Morrigon both have 2 of the BEST profiles on this site I have seen. I personally don't understand why their profiles are not in the top 3 - but again that is my opinion, and not everyone else's. But at the same time, I never hear them complain about a rating they get.
Probably all of the '10' stampers going hay-wire elsewhere on VR. I don't care if I have a top profile. I just don't want a bad one...I would like to keep it in the 9's range...on the 9.**** scale, that is...lol.
Personally, I don't care for the rating system at all.
I dont mind if i get rated low or high. That's not what I'm here for. I'm not here to have my worth given to me in a mathimatical equation. I'm here to have fun, meet new people, but sure as heck not to please everyone. I am quite content being rated a one. I still have my friends on here that I know I'm worth more than that to.
So, in all. It doesn't phase me. I don't ask why someone rated me low, cause I don't care.
And I rarely rate myself. So i don't get asked.
People should keep in mind that when looking at someones profile, it is of them: not to be what we like or dislike personnaly, but of that person. So rate fairly of them, not on your personal taste(s) or preferance(s).
When asked "Why the low rate" then some one needs to be mature, honest and provide explaination. Even consider re-rating as many profiles are under construction, new, and developing.
They should not be slamming in reply of a simply and honest question being asked of them.
I'm always up for re-rates when asked too do so. Only fair thing to do.
If someone asks me why I low rated them, I always answer respectively. Normally the only reason I down rate lower than an 8 is for inactivity over 5 months.
I don't really care about my rating I did in fact though ask the earliest of the rates for a re rate since it's been a year and just wanted to see if they would and they did it was cool, I gave up trying to ask people recently why they rated what they did cause one blocked me, another sent me a message saying that it was just a roll of the dice whatever that means. and another thought I didn't like it so they rated me a 10, 10 wasn't the answer I was personally looking for thanks though I was honestly trying to figure out why only an 8 I mean it don't bother me and I don't care but I have found in rating profiles alot of the 8's and 9's come back for a rerate and have always given tens so I have never had a bad message or a message I would call bad I just don't get them at all LOL
on a personal level for me my rating isnt that important sure i want my pro to be the best i can do it.but im on here to make freinds and have fun
Well this is a website and there are 1000's of people from many walks of life on here, so your bound to run into some who will rate low or *slam * you for asking why they rated you low.
Many are on here for popularity many are just here because they love the site and have made friends. I prefer thel atter LOl
I have been a perfect 10 , I have been like very low rated as well it is just a toss of the dice. Many do not read the profiles they rate just for the rate %'s.
So if you spoke politely than go on and just do your own thing if they want to be rude to you. As premium members we can Block people for a reason.. so unfortunately it is what it is.
Hope that you still enjoy it here and do not let a mere handful of people deter you from being on VR.
I know I've already answered this but I've also been keeping up on the posts made since mine. I've seen a lot of people state that we should be, or already are, posting on what the profile means to that specific member. While I love my own profile and think everyone should give me a 10 because of its awesomeness, I know this isn't going to happen. And frankly, outside of lauraland, it really shouldn't.
When I come across a profile, I can read the words and look at the pictures but that doesn't mean I know this person, or even how well this profile represents them. I can see if they (or someone else) put a lot of time into the profile but I still don't know the person.
Personally, I don't rate profiles based upon its representation of the Rave member but rather, how it speaks to me. They are, after all, my rates to hand out. While I try not to rate low, I don't give everyone a 10.
That being said, if I rate you lower than you feel you deserve and you approach me respectfully, then I'll reply in kind. If someone approaches me rudely, I tend to just ignore it.
Actually, you don't have to be a premium member to block someone. Everyone can use the block button, but you are right. If they are rude, simply move on. It's not like it is the end of the world. I myself have gotten many 1's.
Morbid Tendencies>>> I do still enjoy it. I hate that I got irritated at all. It isn't like me, but was depressed about the whole birthday thing, stress at work, etc. Not to mention several people on here being rude to me on the same day.
To all>>> Heck, today a girl in my coven got mad at me just because I added her to my friends page. She is IN my Coven...sheesh. I always add Coven Members. How else are you supposed to know who logs in at the same hours, or who you might be capable of being friends with? I might have liked her, but not with an attitude like that I won't.
Some people get ticked off over the slightest little things. I hate making someone mad, but *shrug* I guess I can't help it. It is one of the reasons I like playing with "Grown-UPs"; I hate the childishness of some people...I hate to say it but: *Childishness Is NOT Age Restricted*

well i feel if they give me a low rating its not because of my profile its they just dont like me but thats ok.
