Please read the article today on Newsweek's website titled Bite Me! Why we love vampires.

Why do you suppose women in particular are attracted to vampires? They are the exact opposite of what most women say they want in a love partner...So why the attraction?

After you read the article, please consider what you think the answer to the question is!

I guess it is down to the age old thing of wanting a man to knock you off your feet.

Like in the article, I am the kind of girl who wants a man to be dominant, I love the idea of being seduced, and vampires are the perfect notion. Plus being bitten is fun.

Interesting article...and it sums up nicely what women like about vampires: the perpetual youth, strength, power, good looks...and the sex!
Vampires are the real 'bad boys x 10.' Women like bad boys due to what I just listed; so asking why is kinda' like asking 'What came first - the chicken or the egg?" LOL!

This is a question very close to my heart.

First, I think blood sucking is metaphorical for cunnilingus, which at one time, at least in America, was not so common as it is now, but most women don't hate it. Most men are not artistes when it comes to the clit. Vampires are. All that neck biting and sucking means something else.

Unfortunately, this simple and delightful metaphor has altered. Clothing and slang are not the only things trendy in our culture. So is sexuality. I'm not saying that bdsm was just invented. It's always been around, but it was more secret at one time.

It appears to have entered mainstream consciousness. Maybe because we've done everything else.

Ramsland is the author of the original bio of Anne Rice. AR also published bdsm erotica under the name Anne Beaudelaire, and she has influenced a generation with her writing and sexual innuendos.

All vampire erotica combines pain and pleasure. If this is your only, or first, exposure to erotica you might be conditioned to expect this.

In the article, Ramsland remarks that she's surprised at the number of women who want a master or to surrender. I think there's a difference between the two, but in the media the vampire male lover is portrayed as deeply caring. His love survives centuries and he must have this one woman (Mina).

What woman wouldn't want such an enduring love?

Female sexuality is complex, and many men while mastering penetration, fail to navigate the clitoris with dedication and fervor. The fictional vampire has no such hesitation, and time is irrelevant. He is capable of focusing on that erect, blood-filled pulse point for infinity.

Although physically small, the clitoris is a complex organ, and men have to be industrious in order to master it. Fortunately, there are books available, including "The Clitoral Truth." Such books can provide a useful starting point for those who are motivated, but it takes years to learn the finer points. And what works well with one partner may not work at all with another, so it can be important to develop a range of techniques.

As for the domination aspect of this, I believe that most people are capable of surrendering to blissful pleasure. But I don't fully understand the attraction of S&M. Maybe the pain and restriction of the torture part provide contrast to the pleasure and liberation of the sex part?

honestly I think it has more to do with wanting something that you simply can't have. while there is the fascination with mystery and lure as well as sexual desire, nothing beats desiring something you know you cannot have. The forbidden fruit if you will. since the dawn of time women have had high natural curiousity levels and are constantly on some level searching for the next level of satisfaction whether that be sexual, domination, fantasy, mystery or simply obtaining something rare.

Hollywood has done much to inspire the modern versions of what is considered a vampire. Though frightening there also portrayed as nothing more than a sexual toy who's heart only beats when he chooses for it to.

on another note women aren't the only ones fascinated by the vampire though it seems a predominately female pre-occupation. there are many men who are fascinated as well.

Women have fallen in love with literary characters long before vampires. My god if they didn't then Harlequin romances would have went bankrupt years ago!

I think the allure of the male vampire to a woman is someone who is mysterious, dark, strong and very sexual. To have someone kiss your neck or bite it is very sensual and for some women they like the idea of being totally dominated by a man.

So with this said I do agree with the article in that women are attracted to the sexual side that is a common factor in both literature and movies with vampires. Sex sells.

Okay first off, who doesn't want what they cannot have? lol

But really, looking at this logically
Here's a vampire, strong and able to protect himself and those important to him, to survive that kind of existence he'd need to be intelligent too. Smart and strong would probably mean he'd be pretty successful in making money so that wouldn't be a problem and then add in great sex and a need for your blood to survive and you have a relationship made in heaven. lol

In a vampire, there's no need for the woman to mother the man, he's strong enough to care for himself and her, smart enough that she won't have to constantly untangle the checkbook, and is dependent on her blood in exchange for his health and willing to trade for great sex.

Pretty much the exact opposite of the world we live in where finding a strong independent partner of either sex is very hard to do and most end up making trade offs for what they can and cannot have in a partner.

Since the literary version of a vampire is often portrayed as a romantic and misunderstood creature which plays on the emotions it's not really hard to understand why women would go for a vampire in a heartbeat.

To be honest, it's the appeal of a man that is dark, dominant, and in a word, mysterious. I've noticed that women tend to like the darker natures, if not openly, then in their own dreams. I'll be honest when i say that biting is fun, and the appeal of someone who is strong, and could easily end my life in a second yet chooses not to, well...It's a little too hard to express. It's the feeling of what cannot be had, that forbidden romance, if you will, that makes vampires so appealing to me.

I think this question would tie into the thread entitled "why more women on VR." In my perpective, the charge for the vampire is a bit of an allure. Some women tend to go for that tall, dark and mysterious figure to "sweep them off their feet."

Well in my opinion women facinated by vampires as treating them the blue blood and if they taken by vampires n romance they will treat them royally or submissive to the romancism...

But all vamps are not so. my example i think myself lower kin than human. and normally I cut from the human of any gender and like aloneness whenever dire rise for spatial energy and don't want to get disturbed from human.

I feel alot of it has to do with the whole *IDEA* of having the forbidden fruit and what it may give us. as in pleasures and love. Eternal youth, etc.

Not just the dominating part, but the whole concept of the *VAMPIRE* .
I do not want one. LOl do I find them fascinating yes, sexy, of course. yet, I know they do not exist. so, there ha go .. :) just how I think and the article was very interesting as well :)

They'd like to feel as they grow up and dump their husbands/boyfriends, that if they were with a vampire and they knew his age they wouldn't be technically robbing the cradle.

Because they are seen as ethreal beings more beautiful than the rich and famous. Where the rich and famous have high standards of who they are attracted to, Vampires are beings who are looking for some kind of normal life even a normal girl off the street; meaning it could be anyone.

Also they kill thousands for their blood and always have a need for more, yet if they don't kill you it must mean that there is something extraordinary about you that makes you different from all the other girls; that includes the immortal ones as well they are giving up the ethreal beauties to be with the regular.

So mix that with the whole ideal sexuality and dominance what regular girl wouldn't be in love?

Wow. And thanks to Hollywood for creating Vampires, that can be loves by many women. Seriously speaking, if a woman meet a real vampire, she will not last one night without being bitten and all her life drained away. So, yes, is nice to see the
handsome vampire in a Movie. The real thing, not so cute.

I don't really like the whole Hollywood stereotype of the "dark and handsome" vampire. I personally blame the Twilight saga and Queen of the Damned (great movie, not dissing.) for making male vampires into hunky dead corpses with pale skin and sheer sexiness. Plus, what girl wouldn't want a guy with inhuman abilities. Must come in handy in bed for those little necrophiliacs :)

In response to Deadlyxdesire -

The appeal of a female vampire to a man is clear -- a woman whose soul is already damned. Such a woman could be loved but could not be hurt. Such a woman would be physically strong, possess stamina without limit and would crave physical pleasure.

The drawback -- she would probably kill all rivals, which could be disheartening. Unless she was bisexual, in which case all rivals could be recycled into participants.

I love how you always find the silver lining, Luke. There may be a few drawbacks: Remember, Dracula dumped his buxom vampire brides. The were charmers, fosho, so the lesson here is more for the ladies.

Vampires are polygamous, serial maters. Most women fail to realize this.

Bloodmother...I think this actually would go both ways whether they were male or female. Each sex can be jealous and possessive and in matters such as we are talking about they may stray to find someone stronger and more compatible. But that also happens in real life as well.

i belive women like the idea of haveing a vampire lover because movies portray vampires as mysterious dominent beings that are protectors and will defend you with their life and they are also said to be inhummanly beautiful and when he falls in love with you he wants only you and i think women really like the idea of haveing something so beautiful and protective to be theirs and only theirs forever.

to my opinion, it is simply because vampires are very sensual, sexual and dominant, as also subtil and can read your mind and know what you desire what will make you feel like the queen of the world and do anything they want.

as for the article, my opinion on the article, it is an article. sorry, no offence intended. I simply give my opinion on the question.

I love to read article, and I appreciate them, but I never juge an article as it is a person's right to an opinion and to their effort on researching stuff, so I consider articles to be a gift. And I do not juge a gift.

honestly, i believe it is the overall seduction of the vampire.
the attraction, even when some of them arent particularly THAT physically attractive, it's the danger also that draws women to them. not to say a woman would want a partner that would abuse her (although i have seen cases such as this)...but what i mean to say is rather, the danger aspect of it does establish a realm of mystery that could not otherwise be obtained. and who doesn't like a good mystery?

the fact that they have so-called powers, makes it even more intimidating, thus creating more shadows for truths and mysteries to hide in to lure their prey.

it's the perfect predator-prey example in my opinion.

i for one know this is some of the reasoning behind why i am so absolutely drawn to the vampire.

What makes people think vampires are sexy? movies? Do you ever thought it could be the same as humans selective shallowness? - after all "beauty is in the eye of the beholder"- as much as i hate to repeat overrated quotes, is the best that connotes the conception I want to get across.

Illum..it is a proven fact that people are attracted by looks. There was a study done with infants that they showed pictures to and the infants responded to the more attractive photos then they did the lesser attractive ones. It has nothing to do with shallowness. Shallowness in my opinion is when someone makes the choice to prefer beauty over anything else.

I think the allure is the fact that vampires can control you, awaken your sensuality as well as your sexuality. For me it is more a sensual/sexual allure.

Vampires are mysterious and hide in the shadows. So it also awakens that instinct in a woman, the desire to love and nuture. Like the original bad boy, it makes me want to be that love, that saves them from themselves.

in my previous post I forgot ot mention a detail

the money, most vampires will be loaded and live in places us mear mortals cant afford, they will have awsome clothing, that cost more then the avarage paycheck.

so money is also a big factor, and most will use it to impress women and try to win them over with gifts and all, I mean no disrespect and I do not think woman are materialistc, but we all are imperfect, me first and a nice shinny thing will attrack my attention, of course it dont mean I'll let myself be "suck dry" over it, but I am not blind so I will look.

Vampire men have these qualities:

*They are independent and extremely tough (almost impossible to kill), and exceeds strength limits to any mere mortal. This means that the ladies feel VERY safe around them...

*They aren't really the social type, being that they only consort with their kind, which is very scarce. This makes the vampire free to cavort with her...

*They always seem to keep themselves well-groomed and dressed nicely Women like a clean man.

*They are experts at the neck. ...and come on girls, you love necking...

*They seem to only be out to find that special someone for what seems like an eternity. I'd like to think that a man saved himself almost three hundred years just for me...

*They seem to be the most faithful partners, staying with their love for the rest of eternity. It's heaven to know that you get to spend the rest of your eternal life with the guy....

*They are suave devils! Right, ladies?

*They are the ultimate bad boys...and women love bad boys...

*They are not only the strongest, but the smartest creatures known. We get brains AND braun...WOOHOO!

(Bear in mind I found some of these on another website.)

And for all of those women that do NOT like some of these traits...so sorry. I'm not trying to stereotype...

very interesting article

I think that the possiblity of "eternal love" is a big draw along with the physical perfection, money, strength and having enough knowledge to talk about any subject are a few of the reasons.

I know these things have been stated and re-stated here along with the "wanting what we can't have". I guess it's the idea of the "perfect" relationship - enduring and the fact that vamps can usually read your mind is particularly interesting.

Why do women love vampires? This day and age, women are equal to men in the work field...or at least they both share the workload. However, household duties are still primarily a woman's job including a 9-5 work day. We have fought to be equals, we have fought to be better. Now that we're here, we realize that, unfortunately, we're tired of it. We want to know that there is a man out there that is sooo sexy, sooo strong, soooo different, and soooo above the norm that the only way we can find it is by being with a vampire. I know a lot of women will hate me for what I said, but it's the truth, at least for me. I worked, I took care of my daughter, I cooked, I cleaned, and by the end of the day, I was spent. Being a single mom was hard, but it gave me so many bragging rights that all of the "losers and users" out there stayed away from me because I wanted someone who could do exactly what I did, or did it better. Ladies, how many men can do what we do? Very, very few. The only way we can get a day off is if a sexy vampire walked up behind us, massaged our shoulders, kissed the side of our neck, picked up us, carried us to a bed with silken sheets and rose petals, and showed us how fragile we were. Because of the modern times and how easily heartbreak occurs by cheating or one night stands, the need for men to actually care or even act like it is gone. A vampire (in some stories) yearn to be human again. Because they live forever and watch people they care for grow old and day, they appreciate life more. We, being warm-blooded women, are natural magnets because we love so fiercely that it brings the cold out of the undead. Our vampire men need us just as much as we need them. It's a beautiful and indestructible romance between human women and vampiric men that has been around before the beginning of vampire romances and one that will last until the end of time.

Adirastorm, this is the best description I have ever read of vampire allure. They can give us something we can't get from human men: devotion. Plus, we can excuse them for being overbearing because of their paranormal baggage. On the other side, we have something to offer them: 31 and more human flavors and foibles.

It's like an algebraic equation: multitasking single mom - average human male over romantic vampire = happy female.

Of course, a crass, heart-breaking vampire has got to exist!

I believe that it comes down to passion. In most literature vampires are extremely passionate and domineering. Kind of like push a girl up against a wall in the pouring rain kind of passion.

in literature vampires seem

1) ancient wisdom is attractive.
2) strong he can have a strong hand but "chooses" to be gentle. hot.
3) dangerous in novels her cusiosity tends to make her resemble a deer in the headlights.
4) well rehearsed she never stood a chance against his wit, confidence and charm.
5) proficent in glamour (mind control) if he wants he can just make her do whatever he wants, so why not do it willingly and enjoy the experience.

I think it is the adrenaline rush. Knowing a creature that is considered lethal in most works of fiction finds you attractive and sweeps you off your feet with the prospect of eternal life together. Then if like those portrayed in True Blood, the knowledge that they are experts at the seduction and what goes with it. I would have to say it would depend of course on whose idea of a vampire. I would not find the vampires from "30 Days of Night" attractive in any way.

Hmm in my observation that is not all fairy-tales, They are the same as the men you are dismissing in your passion of the creature. They are the same you would be lucky to find the same in both worlds, only those as described in most of your idealizations- retells the characteristic of an old vampire( 200+), the way men mature into a emotionally responsible character in the relationship is along the mid 30's-40's with a vampire male would be around the same amount of mortal years to realize the same, you could meet a 200 year old and still in his 2,3 or 4 years growth in vampire years, so still young, depending the individual in most of the cases and patterns of aging; not necessarily sexy because they aren't as everyone depict them as all sexy group of individuals, is all in the eye of the beholder. I just have to say -Twilight- the books, spread some side of the real nature of one, and I think the author knew what she was writing about and from whom to an extent, not involving the abilities and disabilities they presented, strictly on the behavior, not saying they are fixated into love as presented, is the same a mortal way of expressing but intensified, it simply is different, to live in a certain way as a vampire and not able to expand on the impossible to reach because of fear in regards of the mortal reaction to the real side and the same as vise-versa, so to a vampire to find love is harder when you are not looking for what you are craving in a relationship inside the circle you are living, the key is the difference in the range of cases, and for one to find a real thing is hard since they know which one is the other half when they find it, thats another issue, the are X more in everything than a mortal, they love incredibly and they are protective incredibly, so if you cheat you would be breaking a individual not a heart in the women cases I know, Men well is another race apart form the two "existing one" for the sakes of this thread. Some mortals are also destined to be turned, so this calling may be the process of another thing. Circumstances will conclude the exodus of it.

It's the romance of it, through this type of Hollyood portrayal. After all, where is the romance in our society Now? One place only, I would sugeest, in the Hollywood Mythos, Of The Vampire.

Well, I love vampires because I find them interesting and mysterious. Also because of their timelessness. The things they've seen in their existence. Their immortality, beauty.

I'm thinking a lot of women love them for those reasons.
Or maybe because they view them as good sexual partners, with the biting and drinking blood and all.

The Eternal Love.

The fact that this "Vampire" could satisfy your every desire, protect you, take care of you, be gentle and all that romance stuff...

It's a fantasy, therefore it's unattainable so it's desired. That's why it's still appealing to women.

Peronally, I don't correspond sucking blood to be a metaphor for oral sex. To me, blood is an essence of life, and when someone drinks your blood, they are taking a part of you into them. The ultimate act of trust and intimacy. Now a days, you can go to a bar and find someone to get physical with. That is not as sacred as it used to be. No trust needed, just protection. With all the books I have read over the years, granted they aren't as scary as they used to be, but some books like Laurell K Hamilton's early works, got me really hooked over 12 years ago. The fact that vampires don't age, and a lot of times, will be will someone forever. I know I would love someone that I know will always be there, and love me unconditionally. Sure, the sex would be great, but there is more a long lasting relationship then that. In 95% of the books I have read, after a while the vampire will tell the other person, about their life, and communicate completely. How many people now actually keep secrets from family; spouses. There are many aspects of vampires that I love. I hate to bring up Edward of twilight but think about it. How many people with put their SO before themselves, and save them? Not many. That kind of love is rare. Vampires can be very emotional. Between emotions, communicates, loyalty, good looks (ok, I know that is shallow, but who doesn't enjoy a handsome/pretty face?), eternal/unconditional love, and physical satisfaction, I think the vampire hands down, is the most attractive scary being out there....
(Speaking of Edward, there was some forum here a while ago, that made me frown. Someone thought Edward looked down and treated women like they aren't important, or was being abusive, that was a shocker to read... He is dominant because a) he was born before women were (semi) treated like equals, and b) he was telling her things for her own good. If you notice every time she didn't listen she almost ended up dead.. Sorry I just needed to get that out there)
Ok, this is all just my opinion... Please do not argue or say anything negative...

I think society has developed a new moderation to the image of Vampires. They are no longer the scary man killers as portrayed in early versions of theater & movies but thanks to people like Anne Rice they have more human quailties which actually attracts us to the possibilty that they are approachable and likable.
Which gives us a different view point and desire of attraction to them altogether.

I believe women love vampires because of the mystery surrounding them, as well as the raw sex appeal. Many women desire men who are strong and able to take care of them to an extent, who better to have around then a vampire who is strong, intelligent and quite possibly very good in bed (years of practice of course)

We're taught to believe in souls. We're taught to believe in not just love, but that for it to be true it will be everlasting. We're taught to not only accept being taken care of, but to have low self-esteem if we don't have it, ergo we're taught to be mastered. Vampires can deliver all these proscriptions in one tidy bad boy package.

Luke, I love what how you said in your comments, it's amazing....pricely why I'm going to say here...upon this question...

Vlad Dracula himself, the vivode of Transylvania. He who rules the mountains justly, but with a firm hand. The emblem on the front of his lamb's wool hat, containing a dragon. What a powerful symbol it represents a noblemen such as he. Perhaps, this power and demanding of him is so much, frightening and thrilling his wives. His harsh discipline may have taught them well to submit. To anticipate his desires and to please him.

Yet the wives were drained of their youthful blood slowly, erotically, and when they weakened, yet they can only find their strength in his eyes, they still didn't hate him, although the word love, as they had known t, no longer lingered in their mind...perhaps so it happened...

As for women loving vampires, I am a lass who believes in vampiric history, and I have grown to love to research the history of the stern natural ruler, Vlad Tepes. I will not say I do not love nor hate vampires, I find vampires contemplatively from all sides of my mind.

The vampire has taken over books, novels, television, movies, opera, theatre and much more all across the globe. It has developed from ancient lore, to Polidori's The Vampyre and Stoker's Dracula, to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and popular Twilight series. The vampire culture has become dangerous at a frightening level, and the consequences are only horrifying proof to this fact.....

women love being treated as a woman and someone in control to a point not over whelming control but control as he is the man but treats you as a queen

NyteShade - Even so with seduction, and a woman be treated like a queen. Some would be reduced to obessive feelings. Jealousy gnawed away slowly as if it were a fungus dining on doomed flesh.

More than they would have ever want to possess a vampire, to be possessed by one, to have one all to theirselves.

What kind of seduction is this now? To the vampire or to the women, themselves?

women have been and will always be drawn to the Dark, mysterious, dangerous side of the Vampire with hopes of having them all to themselves yet, they would not or could not just for the fact that, well a Vampire has no master except themselves or the one whom turned them.

yet as old as time itself women always want something wild LOl and what better than a vampire. The books make it look and sound so good yet, in the end you would end up be discarded for the new blood that comes along. Just how I look at it.

This is a great thread, I must say.

The article is definitly interesting and does bring up points on why a woman are more likely to want something with one. I can agree it's the aura that vamp does give off. Just being dominated and completely embraced in an ecstasy that words cannot describe. Granted they are bad boys but who doesn't love a bad boy thats so good at being bad.
