I am curious to know what everybody's opinion is on video on the front page (Home). If you haven't seen it yet take a look please.

Although a great piece of work by The Prince, what's being said by the media kinda pisses me off, not that I really care what what people think, but, to me this is the same as racism. Publicly singeing out an entire group of people. To me, what's being said is VERY wrong. Tell me what's you opinion on this. Thank you.

As far as the video goes I think it pretty much does express exaclty how others see alot of us .ESPECIALLY THE MEDIA..I see it this way "To each thier own "...... people are often afraid of things they have no knowledge of .So chalk it up to ignorance and feel sorry for those who judge .Well this is what I do anyway ;)

well the media is a terrible thing and what pleases the people earns them profit. if the people wish to send us into hiding they can try but we will have revenge one day.

the media sucks, a lot of times they turn things into something there not, or make things seem worse than they really are. I always do my own research if im truly interested in a certain issue.

The Media is one of the world's most corrupt businesses. They misconstrue facts and turn people against others. People are just afraid of what they don't understand.

I'm sure we're all guilty of making assumptions here. Every single one of us. Stereotypes are always formed, and they are always inaccurate. It's a part of life that people have to deal with- it is much better to break stereotypes by getting to know new people, and showing that your a nice, mature, thoughtful person (who isn't always on th verge of crying) than to complain about it all. That helps nobody.

A lot of people have made comments about the media being a terrible thing. The media gives us so much information, and rights to react to that information... it may not all be accurate, but we would be screwed if it suddenly disappeared. Maybe you could bear that in mind?

I think it is just how a lot of people see us... but I think it shouldn't be posted on the front page of this site because if others would like to join they'll think its just a big joke... people can think what they want I just don't see a reson for it to be on here...

I totally enjoyed the music. I understand how the media can piss people off. They're good at it. It's annoying, but screw it! Let them think whatever! We know different!

enough of the media and what they think the people want to know. they have there opinion and i have mine, and i know which one is of value and which is useless.

I could care less what popular culture or popular media thinks of punks, goths, skins, thugs or any other subculture that quite obviously is seeking to separate itself from the mainstream anyway. In all my years in the goth scene and the punk scene, I never once doubted that my looks would create controversy or at least set me apart from my peers.

To an extent, that was the point. To say to the average person..."Notice that I am not like you...understand that I don't want to be a part of your world and you don't want to be a part of mine." It was a rejection of things like frat kegger parties and monetary values over social values and the complete lack of individuality exercised by so many in the world today. True it became it's own fad as they all do and is now probably just as wrapped up in cliques and social pecking orders as any other group but it still attempts to reject regular society...and even if it fails miserably at that one thing, at least it tries.

The point the Cruxshaddows were making in this particular mix of Leave Me Alone was the juxtaposition between the view that the media portray of the "goth community" vs. reality. And, conversely, the typical attitude of members of dark society towards the rest of the mundane world.

Cancer's video work made the Cruxshaddows song even more impactful.

lol I find it funny really when I see some sites that have negative thoughts on the gothic culture. One site was Mothers against goths and they claim that one way to tell if your child is a goth is when they eat foods like count dracula cereal ... lol can you imagine? Its not just the media . Its ignorance in general.Ya have to laugh at it or else it would drive you crazy ...

Totally...the song is saying "leave me alone" not as a cry for acceptance or 'fair treatment'. They're singing:

Being in an alternative scene was always a choice of self inflicted ostracizing. A way of keeping us honest so to speak. By looking ghastly or freakish, we force our own hand on just how much we want to be set aside from the regular world.

Thats very true felix. I get a thrill out of being different .I expect people to stare and they do ...lol....Anything a bit different then the norm in society is going to get looks .Im guilty of doing it to many forms of people. Im a people watcher.

Right, so why on earth would you want to ruin all the fun and suddenly be considered just like everyone else.

In truth, the minute being goth or punk or tattooed or freakish becomes acceptable, then those with the stones will push the envelope further and become something that even we'd have a hard time accepting as normal. I'm betting on skin dying. I'd love to be able to dye my whole skin a new color like blue or green...and no I wouldn't expect that it would be very well received by the normal world.

its just another way of people trying to control what we do and how we do it they think if they bash us enough then all of it will end.

i agree with you its just another way of trying to control us but we will stand strong we just need to be left alone we don't bother them by saying look at the way they dress or act we don't mock them so they should show the same respect for us

First of all kudos on the song...love it.

But I do feel that mainstream society does take a dim view of us and our kind. The whole "gothic movement" being compared to gang-like activity is what truly bothers me. Not all who wear black, wish to maim and kill. And as always that which is not understood is feared and scrutinized....
But the media looks for things to pick at and exaggeration of the truth is inevitable.
I don't care. They can see what they will, but we aren't going anywhere. We will remain, and hopefully they will eventually see us as we truly are.... non-conformists.

Well all I can say about the Media, is they are the cause of a lot of bad Mojo. They tend to open their mouths and only tell one side of a story and it is usually wrong anyways. I liked the video Cancer did. I agree with Gouldnkat ahd to say. If people do not understand something they always perceive it as bad. I think what matters most is how one perceives themself.

i didn't even bother with it not worth my time. i see it the in the way that the more they can see that we hate it the more they will try to do it basicly adding to the fire.

I don't know if any of you watched The Office last week with Steven Colbert; but, there is one very odd character on that show..everyone in the office is always making fun of him. Believe it or not, he was on a site that was very, very similar to VR...(they had a bat in the office that they were trying to get out; and he was reading up on bats on a site I would swear looks just like VR). I mean it could very well have been a shot of VR..I had to yell at my husband to come and look. My point is that Vampirism is something that intrigues most people...media simply does what they have to do to keep the ratings up..and who doesn't want to know about something that intruiges them..something that is very hard for people (most anyway) to grasp the concept of.

yes stereo typing is one of the medias best things...... i have a t shirt that says iam only wearing black till they make something darker...... or sue me i like the color black dosent mean iam twisted or anything else ....... DarkArcana yeah johnny cash always wore black but it was in refrence to his dead brother who wanted to be a priest...... it was in honor of him he always put on all black clothes..... alot of people can be ignorant in why people are who they are the media is even worse they tell a tale they think will sell.... not really careing about the true storie.... so i am never beliveing anything i read.........

Well about the sterotyping, from what I have seen on too many profiles that goes both ways, I hate preps etc...so we are not victimised as much as we victimise others.

The medias are both good and bad, they provide us with information as one said, eventhough the information might not always be accurate to the dot, it is still usefull.

The bad side of the medias is that they tend to focus on all the negative because that is what people want to hear.

I enjoyed watching the video and there is a lot of thruth to it, I just think people should look at themselves before looking at others, that goes pretty much for all.

Well all complain about the media but let's face it. There is no supply without demand. Absolutely NONE. So I refuse to believe that none of you buy into this crap every now and then. I know I enjoy the media. I won't lie about that. But maybe I'm more picky than others or maybe I'm poorer than most because I don't go out and do everything the media says I should do or buy what they want me too. We could sit here and complain about the media aaall day long but it's a self righteous waste of time.

round where i live its the school kids and teenagers that have the most problem, the older people dont care one bit they accept change and peoples difference, but the 14 - 25 kids always give me trouble its just a pain.

I tend to agree. The Media portrays us as these psychotic, manic depressive serial killers. And while the portrayal is completely off beyond anything any one of US knows to be true, I still see the humor. After all, THEIR portrayl of us makes the world as whole tend to "leave us alone".

most who encounter me see some weird freak of nature, and I just grin and give them the thrill. Let them think I am insane and to be avoided. Id rather not deal with the sheep of society anyhow.

i love the video & the band who sings the song, the media isnt really as focused on the "goth" scene as they were in in the 90's when the song was written. i agree it is discrimination but we can't do much about it =[

society fears what they do not understand so instead of trying to understand anything they decide its easier and safer to put a stop to it.

You know I have learned over the years that honestly some people will see you as you see yourself. For those that know me personally, whether that is at work or my family, yes I have some strange interests but I am still extremely friendly and outgoing. I just bring those people into my world and let them see the truths behind the myths. I enjoy sharing these things with others.

As far as the rest of society, really what people think of me I would rather not hear. I know many people want to know what is being said behind their backs but I don't. It doesn't bother me, really.

Something to consider...

There are also positive examples of goth in the media. Take the show NCIS- Gabby is totally goth and the show has done a number of episodes where the make fun of that by saying she has to follow "dress code".

Felix- I agree, by being part of a subculture, and if you listen to the song- it asks to be outside the norm.

Yet still to flip the judgements isn't any better. Human yes, but it does not solve the problem.

Perhaps allowing people to hang themselves or prove themselves is a better route than making assumptions based off of little information. Take time around people, because they will always show their "true colors"... and from there if you must, judge them off of what they have done, not how they appear.

Playing devils advocate here (flame me if you wish):

Sub-cultures will always be judged negatively and there is nothing that can be done about it. It’s raw human nature. I will applaud any who try however I feel it’s a waist of time.

Look within sub-cultures and you’ll find clicks (sub-sub-cultures, or micro-cultures) of people that also scorn each other. Kind of hypocritical of a sub-culture to scream about being judged negatively but then turn on it’s brethren that are different then their immediate click of friends and judge them with the same reverence that the mundane world judges the sub culture with as a whole. Look at this site, spend some time here, this is done every day here. It’s a shame too but its normal and just the way humanity is.

To me, if anyone want’s respect and to be viewed in a positive manner than they must make a conscious effort to not judge others regardless of what culture they are apart of.

But I feel it won’t happen as a whole. It is not how humans are and our behavior through out history proves it. As a whole we have no virtue.

You see this all the time in any clique or sub-culture. They further attempt to differentiate themselves, mostly not by affirming their perticular stance, but by degrading and insulting those with a different slant.

I think is IS human nature that we constantly attempt fo find was to make ourselves and our close friend seem "better" than others.

I always try to keep an open mind, but I confess sometimes I catch myself doing this also.

I think if we could find a way to overcome this tendancy and spread that, we could solve many of the problems in the world today. Anyone want to work on this? I can see a Nobel Prize in your future!

In order to justify ones own goodness or “Godliness” one must first have something to point too that they can label as the opposite. We can not define light with out darkness or darkness with out light. We have to have contrast.

ppl will always judge us! I find it sad I live in denver... And to hear what was said here make me sick! Its easyer to blame the things they dont understand and instead of trying to understand it they sum it up to "bad ppl"

They always misundersatnd us because thats it were different and their to afraid to find out why we like this so much. We are not ment to accept every one. As I usually go by a friend to everyone is a friend to no one. You couldn't be loyal to every one. So not everyone gets along. Everyonme think different. We have so many different groups of people but yet the one the meida likes to call goth is the most different because we express ourselves out and in not just in or not just out. In truth we're not afraid to be different. We show it. We let our true selves out and that scars people that we just don't care. We're not going to change. Yes we have a few bad apples but so do they. They just point it at us so they can cover up there own bad apples and try to appear perfect. But we can see right through that. In truth you either hate us or love us. Just like opera. You hate it or love it. I could say more but I'm stopping here.

I ABSOLUTLY agree!! It makes me sick the crap they say about us and they think all of us are the same. They think we are all just bad seeds. It not true. Not all of us are murders or criminals. We are simply unique. :)

I agree that we are being put undera magnifying glass..... but it is the same for every generation... or "fad" or or or .... From Elvis to us .................................the more things change the more that it stays the same. our job is to do what we are doing right now..... get the word out to inform people and educate aka diffuse the situation...

All media is biased in a certain way, so they can capitalize their part of the market. The only way to really get an unbiased report from any news sorce is to read most of them, if not all of them.

I agree with those above who refer to it as pseudo-racism. I personally call it reverse-discrimination. :)

Great video... It sucks that the media only sees the bad apples who identified with our scene.

What is just odd is that if those same killers dressed like rednecks or even as "gangsters" or wearing just polo shirts and blue jeans, it would not be as big a deal. It'll just get at the maximum 30 seconds on the nightly news, often phrased like this: "3 murders happened today by some individuals who were later taken into custody by police. They await their trial soon."

That is all it would be normally. But, when suddenly the word 'goth' is used, it becomes a new beastie entirely, and they spend a whole segment or two on the murders, just because of the 'goth' association.

The video portrayed us as horrors or monsters, but the way I see it is that we are above and beyond what they are, we are not afraid to be ourselves in a society where conformity is high ranking. We stand for individuality and intelligence. They can only deal with our freedom by trying to cage us up. They know that we are doing and being who we want to be, and that scares them.

Perhaps they see their own shortcomings or flaws when they see us, making them see what really lives underneath that plastic coating they call skin . They must be sick to their stomachs that we represent reality, in which there are going to be differences of opinion and ways. They are too terrified to just accept us, so they go through this bullshit of treating us like dogs so that they can feel better about being a lemming; a sheep. A mindless servant. A nobody.

There are those in the mainstream who are not like this, but truly good people are hard to find these days. It is those conceited, arrogant and down right stupid people who put us through hell.

Had a pretty good point,.....ya know "people" are going to be "people", they are going to be accepting or not , judgmental or not...be it mainstream , or sub-culture or otherwise , I myself have spend enough time on here , to know that , it's the same here as well.

Now , this is my opinion of the media, they should know their place, was not long ago , there were rules on what they can say and do , and as "sociaty" has laxed, they have helped with the decay of the morality of this country, it is ok anymore , to be anything your imagination can come up with. Whatever happened to being descret , and your own buisness is YOUR own business.

Ok i have been thinking alot on this whole thing... and Im curious to know everyone thoughts on this... Do you think there some of the younger generation that has brought this discrimination on us.... meening I remember like about 8 years ago we had a very bad thing happen here to one of our schools... the two kids that did it looked goth and wore black trench coats... So My question is for thing like this and a few bad choises of ppl do you think that is way we are all judge and chalked up to bad?

Well , it doesn't really help! Those dark trench coats or long coats are worn by other styles besides goths as well. For instance the western long coat . Anyway , the look ,the life-style is picked on because of the , "evil looking nature " , or the stories and rumors of stories , of negativity the badseeds have made this culture out to be. Me , I love it , and think it is great , and ....as with anything..done tastefully, ..it can be a very good thing. There ARE those that will poo poo this culture no matter what. They , (we) , get picked on because we stand out more. Anything that seems to express individuality , gets picked on , don't matter if your Goth , Western or what have you.

What no one in the media, has ever or will ever touch on is that if you take a close look at every case of the people that commited these crimes, is that htey were all troubled or completely unstable people. They came from broken or abusive homes to begin with. These are all people that did not have real friends or a collective of undertanding intelligent people to lean on for help. And the way they portrayed us is completely wrong. Goth life is a wonderful and beautiful lifestyle that I and many others embrace. Its not a fashion show. Just because you wear or like black clothing, does not make you evil or really even gothic. I know plenty of people that wear black all the time and are not part of "my world". The people that the media were talking about were very troubled adults and kids, that if they had, had the right guidance, could have been a non threatening part of life. But they were'nt. And if you noticed, almost all the places that these crimes took place are town where there is nothing to do and no creative outlet. If these people had something to do with their time things would have been better for them.

What I think about the media is this.. they have nothing better to do than just sit around, and make something out of nothing.. they need to go about their own personal business, and leave us alone.

We are a people of our own community, and we have just a right to be here as the next person, and as far as labels, and prejudice of us is just beyond that of a infant mind that is not open, and can not even consider things outside the box..~NFA

The video ad on the front page of VR is now gone if anyone was looking for it. The contract was only until the seventh. But yesterday on the news I heard a story about "Sex with a Vampire." Seems some female vamp tied a guy up and went on a feeding frenzy. Lucking guy. lol. Anyway, he was very not happy about it. Don't know all the details but the stories continue for good reasons. Some people are f@cking wacky.

the media distorts many things that it reports upon, which is pretty much everything and anything in the world. literally. It is more often than not a very biased report as well. But that dosent take away any one persons own thoughts or opinions about a matter. we all still have judgment and the freedom to use it. if people do or not is their own choice. If someone thinks that i am going to violently kill them or perform some malice full act upon them because i always wear black, then so be it. that is one less close minded person that I dont have to deal with. But it so happens that black is my favorite color and if they'd probably like me as most people do. If they dont, may their eyes rot in their heads and their food turn to feces. lol

Well, color me the outcast, but I didn't particularly care for the video.

I enjoyed the video a lot. The media seemed to really start targeting the goth culture after the Columbine "massacre"; with the "trench coat mafia" and the school shootings that followed that, they dug till they could find something to associate with the goth culture.

the media is always looking for ways to blame the goth culture for things like that because we are different then society as a whole. They go on all the time about tolerance and not discriminating against people all the time but still can't seem to let the differences between people go at all

The media may think what they want. Even though I don't like labels I would be considered "goth." I love being different and causing a little (well, maybe a lot) controversy. If people don't like it they can take a long walk off a short ledge for all I care.

Not to start an argument, but Johnny cash wore black to make a statement. Listen to his song "Man In Black" and he explains it.

While this forum is not a debate on Johnny Cash's chosen attire (nor does it actually matter), whoever brought him up made a point.

I fully agree with Echo, every single person on the website and in the world is guilty of passing judgement, and not one single person is qualified to because no one is perfect. It's human nature, and we all are human. So perhaps we should take a lesson with the statement Cancer has made and try to go against the grain, stop passing judgement. :)

I agree with many people who've answered the media is just another way that everything we see and hear are censored because they dont think we can handle the truth and try to hide what they are really doing, and formed into a preconcieved notion that someone else thinks is something we can handle.

that video kind of angers me too. first off, you don't have to wear any form of black in order to be goth. and goths aren't dangerous at all. they keep to themselves and are quite friendly people.

the media, society, family, "friends, all tend to stereotype people or "change" people because they are not comfortable with whoever that person which i personally think sucks and also gotta love when people say they understand something when they have NO clue because they have never been through it in their entire lives ~just one of my pet peeves sorry lol had to rant a lil :)
