I tried to research this years ago and couldn't come up with much. Do any of you know how? I did try but never came up with anything.
Its a very good obscure occult subject. It is very common in Eastern Europe
The fortune teller takes the dregs of someone's tea, swirls in around and then dumps the cup upside down on a saucer.
If the tea leaves end up stuck to the inside of the cup, they looks at the patterns formed and 'tell' you what they represent
There is some skill involved, if the swirling isn't just right you end up dumping the tealeaves in the saucer.
Tea bags are NOT an option LOL and the tea is drunk without milk or sugar
I hope someone here knows how you're supposed to interpret the shapes
As far as I understand it, a person drinks some tea and tells a fortune by interpreting the shapes of the remaining tea leaves stuck at the bottom of the cup.
You read the remains of the tea leaves when your done drinking it.
So I'm guessing it would be very hard to find someone willing to teach me.
I'vr heard so many variations of that through ancient chinese cluture to modern day asian cluture. I am a scientific mind so it's hard for me to succumb to the thought, but I never disredit aythig I canot disprove.
That is my understanding of how it works as well. If you find somone to teach you Phoenix - I'd love to learn too :)
well explained artemka, have to agree with you.
you have to see if the tea leaves are stuck at the bottom of the cup and try to discern what the tea leaf figure means.. then apply it to reality
i think it has somethig to do with htings u se ein the tea leaves and what it has to do with the person's life. i dont think it tells the future......
Im from England and me nan taught me ….
You need lose tea white cup (bone china taste better) hot water … let the person sip the tea and talk to them about what is bothering them in life and get them to focus on that question while sipping the tea.
Next with a little tea left in bottom place your hand over the top of the cup and swirl clock wise time three.
Next you must have a good understanding of the symbols and read the clump of tea around the cup.
Rim means very important even life changing
Middle/ sides not so much
Bottom can/will change … Harry potter had no reason to be worried.
well this is a very old art and not many know how to do it, it is kind a rare unless you live in the south region, mainly in the african territory, this is where is it smotly orignating.
I have heard of it, but i know nothing of it. what i do know is it has something to do with the way the leaves are situated in the water. and I think it has something to do with what image u see in the leaves. I saw it in a movie, and it escapes me which one.
I am not sure if reading tea-leaves is something one can learn, isn't this meant to be an inherited trait?
Partially Emmy, the patterns and flow of the art of learning to read the tealeaves is what is taught and passed down through the generations.
The ability to see what they say, well it's a lot like divination- some people can practise and become adequate interpreters, others naturally pick up the knack and some never can do it. It's actually very similar to tarot; each person does it differently, yet all are using other abilities with their readings to make them accurate.
My advice would be to find a person that does Tarot and tea leaves in your area and first have them do a reading for you. If you like their energy and how they work, then ask them if you can apprentice under them. I find with arts like this, you need to find a teacher that you respect and understand- not a book.
Hmm, thanks for the info =) my grandmam used to read the leaves, and her mother before her, but all i see when I stare into the cup now is the imaginings of what I think the culmination of the tea-leaves could be. I am more gifted at reading palms, than anything else but my talents as a tea-leaf reader have all rather gone to pot :)
Yes that makes total sense to me, since it's not the ability you lack- it's the medium that you prefer. In other words, you relate to touch and hands more than the impersonal bits of reading leaves. Both are the same type of gift, just different preferences ;)
There are some, although rare, cups glazed and fired with the specific purpose of aiding in reading tea leaves. There is a pattern drawn on the inside bottom of the cup, and the remaining tea leaves clinging to different parts of the pattern are supposed to mean different things.
theres a new book out or coming out by Gillian Kemp called Tea leaves,Herbs, and Flowers: Rortune Telling The Gypsy way look for it
Hmm, that sounds just the ticket... all three in one, sounds like the trinity babe! :)
I would think tea leaves might be much like scrying. The leaves left in the cup being more of a conduit towards pattern recognition than decyphering shape symbols.
You CAN read tea leaves with a teabag broken open... It tastes like Cr8p but you can do it... *disclaimer* i don't recomend drinking the tea made from teabags, pour it out into the sink.
There are many different ways to read teacups, the most common seams to be that the handle is the present time and that you go clockwise around the cup until one year is readched at teh handle. the bottom of the cup contains things that are a general influence for the entire year. There are many symbols that are common to most tassomancers but each has their own personal symbology too. It is commonly believed that if a letter is attatched to an image that it should be taken litterally. Like if you saw an A next to a bear, you will have a bear encounter in Alaska. or a man kissing your hand with a letter F might be that you will haev a romantic encounter with a man named Frank. The books on Tassomancy are more rare than cartomancy, and even more difficult to find is something that is really good that contains more than a hundred or two symbols. I recomend gazing into your cup regularily and browsing in your neighbors cup. Make stuff up out of the pictures you see, use your intuition. Find any book with tealeaf symbols, go see a tealeaf reader (it is considered harder work for less pay than most other mediums) and learn a bit about style and then make the rest up.
have fun.
Heres a site I found on the subject:
Obviously an interesting subject, and an old art that not to much of us know to much about without researching it first. After all is said and done we should start a new thread on how it is done. It would be nice to know a new skill.
This is the first i have heard of it pretty interesting so far and thanks for the links so we can learn about it!
i agree with hot4blood. we should def gather info and create kind of a "how to"
Most of us that read tea leaves do it because our families have done it for generations.
I'd be interested tp know if there are tassomancers of the Turkish Coffee Variety.
Is there anyone out there that can contibute an experience with this or another nonwestern for of the art?
Hmmm Kglit, I had heard of that when I was out in Middle East, but havent actually seen it done. At a guess I suppose it would be on the same basis and background as tea-leaves?
there was this book i found in a Barnes and Noble that was all about tea and reading the leaves, it had a shape guide and technique. alas i DID NOT buy it. i've been rather annoyed and haven't seen it again since
i should have purchased it when i had the chance
i have a tea set that supposedly had been used in tea leave reading ceremonies.
I had heard of it before I travelled through what little of the middle east I have been through, so I looked while I lived in Israel and had heard of it mentioned while in coffee shops, but never found anyone who could do it, let alone teach. It seams to me that with the diversity on the rave, that someone would know someone who knows more than I do. I have heard that the saucer is integral and is part of the reading.
The saucer is someties used as past of the reading in tea leaves as well... but it is hardly the most signifcant part and is largely used only to drain the cup into, which is, I suspect the same for coffee. The fez, i imagine is significantly more watery than the dregs of leaves.
it's studying the shapes in which the tea leaves are in at the bottom of the cup- and each symbol or shape has some sort of meaning.
you should try looking on ebay or amazon.com for books about reading tea leaves
how i've been told to do it is drain the tea or drink it and the first thing u think the shape is thats what its supposed to be
Dark Greeting's,
my Grams taught (she was full Roma Gypsy)When there is only tea above the leaves you swirl the tea Clockwise three times while thinking question or blank you'r mind, then turn cup over the leaves left you read.the Gypsys have special meaning for the shapes that appear.
Dark Blessing's,
KA

i looked into it also and found that this site helped me alot, though i do find that it works better with original tea leaves and not coffee.
shame really because i am a coffee drinker
it is a very complex art if i was to look in to a tea cup i would just say "i see a big funny shape at the bottom of the cup." i would love to learn though lol
I worked in a tea shop when I was a teen and the lady who owned it read leaves. In my honest opinion if anyone here decides to go get a leaf reading done be careful more often then not they aren't reading the leaves. A lot of people have just learned the art of reading people and use it to their advantage...
Hence the lady told me her abilities told her I was wiccan when really she was just basing that opinion on a book I was reading at that time I was practicing Satanism. She also told her nephew that he was homosexual...wrong again...
Go with your instincts, that is what I always say; if something doesn't seem right it usually isn't.
I have been interested in leaf reading for a while now but have yet to try it out, this thread has keened my interest a little more.
It is true that many fortune tellers are just really good at reading people. I am currently researching spirit guides, perhaps a closer relationship with one's own guide would enhance the ability to truly read.
I too am really good at reading people...does that make me a fortune teller? I think it requires some other kind of ability besides being able to read people.
A site that I found is:
http://www.soyouwanna.com/site/syws/tealeaves/tealeaves.html
Sorry, I'm not good with HTML so I can't make it a link or anything; you'll just have to copy/paste.
A true reading takes far more insight and skill than reading the person. I know this from the tarot. The cards actually speak to me. People used to take me to parties and I made many believe there is truly more to life.
But I do understand what your saying...I'm sure half of the "readings" people get are bullshit. So its kind of hard to tell the legit ones apart.
As far as I understand it, a person drinks some tea and tells a fortune by interpreting the shapes of the remaining tea leaves stuck at the bottom of the cup
there are things about a person that cannot be seen by even an astute observer of people.
I was just reading something on this there is a way you have to read them as well the diffrent layers represent a time in that persons life, past, present, and so on.
my gran used to do this aswell as plam readin and scrying ,but alas she died when i was only 6 so i never got to learn from her, altho i did inherit her crystal ball which i still cant use.
I have some articles on it floating arround at home, not something I've tried as I prefer Runes, but in its simplist form you are utilising a "random" event to provide a focus for your subconcious mind and your sprit self to provide quidance withouth interferance from the concious mind.
Much like an form of reading, there is a little learning, a modicum of skill, and a bucket of practice!
I'd suggest either finding comeone locally to teach you, or digging up the basics of the net, and practicing it. Get feed back, and modify your techniques untill you find something which works FOR YOU!
Remember, the "rules" are really more like guidelines :-) Ritual is all about providing focus and a spritual link through repetition.
I believe more often than not you can tell if you are being scammed. Most have the ability to tell a genuine person from a dishonest one, but at times some want so hard to believe in these people that they let their guard down. True readings do take more than the ability to read people.
I worked with a scammer and more often than not she was very good at her job. The food she made was amazing though.. I think she was even fooling herself at times...
I wont pay for any reading of any kind. If someone is kind enough to give me a reading that's great but it isn't something I am about to spend money on.
I have heard of a psyhic who told my father things that no one would have known, he didn't even know at the time. Some of the things they tell you can be very accurate...
there is a good book out by raymond buckland called: complete book of witchcraft, it has a section in it about tea leaves and reading them.
Yeah The Complete Book of Witchcraft has a little discription of what it is, how it is done, and what some of the patterns seen could mean. It also states it is very easy to do and learn.
I would suggest if you are serious about learning to read leafs you buy a book that is just about Reading tea leafs but I also would like to say that The Complete Book of Witchcraft is a good book to have in your home, it covers a liitle bit of everything (well not everything but you get my point I am sure)
Very interesting thread Phoenix
I have not looked into the reading of tea leaves so I have no knowledge to share on the subject, but have found what others have left here very interesting
You technically can use coffee grinds, but I find they don't work as well. You can also break open a teabag, but for me loose-leaf tea has always worked the best.
http://www.crystalinks.com/tealeaves.html
There is a good, but by no means comprehensive, list of common symbols and their interpretations.
it would be interesting to learn... riotgirl what have you learned so far?
I have often wondered if most forms of fortune telling aren't a solid dose of vague suggestions followed by a person reading into it what they need to in order to counsel themselves or be counseled by an empathic 'reader'. I've looked over the links and most 'readings' of leaves indicate extremely vague but slightly suggestive metaphors for things that would largely be applicable to almost anyone in their life with the specifics being filled in by the person with the questions. I think a truly mystic reading would have to step beyond metaphors like:
You have hidden thoughts
You're going somewhere (perhaps a flight)
Someone doesn't like you
Etc.
Dark Greeting's,
reading tea leaves is alot of fun,My grams was a true fortune teller she was 90% in all her readings and she used a deck of regular Bicycle playing cards.Everyone should try this once. You can use symbolism that comes to you instinctuialy (SP)
Dark Blessing's,
KA
my grandmother used to read tea leaves but I could never understand how she saw so much in the cup when I just say leaves. I wish she had taught me how to do it when she was alive
Dark Greeting's,
Bathnoeybabe (SP sorry) Just look at the leaves look for a shape and the first thing that comes to mind. It's fun like looking at clouds and finding shapes.I hope you give it a try and let me know the results.
Dark Blessing's,
KA
thank you I will try that should be interesting to see what comes of it
FelixFelix, thats the thing, any book can only give you a starting point on intuitive fortune telling.
I have found through practice that where a particular rune means something vague, its place in the reading, and my insticts give me much more information which only comes with practice!
As an example... NEED, Indicates that the gods help those who help themselves. Depending on its placing however that could meen a raft of things from the need for action, to a need for acceptance of the situation, to a to fullfull your own goals rather then depend on others!
This is why when you read something telling you how to do a reading of what ever form, they SHOULD be vague, but should also be caveated with "This is an outline only, your insticts and practice should be your guide"
Druidic - I agree that the vague starting points can be a good way to begin 'counseling yourself' since sometimes we only need a hint in order to realize something we've always known.
My point is that for someone else to give me a reading that I find truly mystical, they must show a deeper intuition than a common counselor towards me, without asking me too many questions and getting me to answer those questions for them.
Example, in tarot forums and chat rooms years and years ago, I used to offer the same quality of counseling and the same level of intuition as many readers, without a deck, because I knew how to listen and learn about a persons problems or questions and to direct them to answers they already had. I understand the principles of tarot and tea leaves but have never received actual new knowledge from them, just insight into my own mind...that's not mystic enough for me :)
Problem with tea leaves nowadays is probably that you have to tell most people the blood sugar level is too high, and you can't see anything else because of it :-)
I dunno, but reading tea-leaves is quite reminiscent of reading bones or dog-poop for that matter. It's about interpreting the patterns they form as they fall upon the surface the are strewn upon.
Here's another webpage that might help:
http://www.mojomoon.net/tleaves.html
Felix,
Hmm, a very valid point which I can't argue with, as I have said before what ever technique you use is no more then a shortcut to you intuitive spirit, which CAN be accessed directly and independantly, but by its very nature is open then to interferance from your concious mind.
I ALWAYS find it easier doing readings for strangers, that way my concious mind CAN'T get in the way.
As for asking quesions prior or during the reading I have done a number of successful readings for peope on VR whan all I have known about them is their name, AV, and maybe a passing scan of their profile a while ago. Without a "filter" technique to my subconcious, my concious mind wouldn't have a damn clue!
There is a book by a reader called Sasha Fenton you may try.
Druidic - If one can find a way to remove natural filters or links to the person being read, than yes, I'd say that shows more promise as a means of crossing into the paranormal or mystic. I'm intrigued.
I find it fascinating, but no. I cannot. There seems to be quite alot to it, I read my runes, and that is a continuing learning experince in itself.
I agree it is fascinating. I believe that reading tea leaves is similar to reading tarot cards. It just takes practice. I personally prefer cards to tea leaves!
I actually really enjoy reading tea leaves. Tarot just doesn't do it for me. Tea leaves feel so much more real, so much more... there. I'm not too good at tasseography yet, but I'm working on it. The worst part for me is drinking the tea without drinking in the dregs... also, it can get very strong if you don't drink it quickly and you're not supposed to use milk or sugar or anything. So that can be a challenge. But I think it's really fun.
I have tried reading tea leaves once, a friend reffered me to it and said that it's much like rading tarot cards or bones.
I tell ya what then Felix, Ask a friend of yours to ask me a question, make it as clear or outline as you need, but please, no "Yes/No" questions, I hate them and never get a straight answer anyway!
Then give me some time to answer it (as I'm away for a while and wont be on line for a bit) and we shall see what I can come up with.
All I ask is the individuals first name, or a nick name even (so long as its one that they use regular and is connected with them) and that you give me feed back. I MUST get the feed back, I am as intreaged as you are to see if it will work at all!
Oh yes, and make it something veryfiable, ie, have the answer already decided, honestly and openly (For instance Don't ask "Does X love me" cause if it says no, and you think its yes, you could be wrong! :-))
BRING IT ON! :-))
I hope that didn't come across as too much of a 'challenge' to your belief. It was not my intention. However, as I said, I'm intrigued and will speak to you more offline or off forum at least.
gypsy magic books or hoodoo books usually have quite a bit of info on reading tea leaves
My Great Aunt Elaine read tea leaves. She would dry and blend her own teas, and would use the tea that best related to the type of reading she was doing. She would do meditation and visualization exercizes while her subject drank the tea. The subject was also asked to focus on the specific desire for the reading. After the tea was drank she added a drop of rosewater, swished the cup around and tipped it on the saucer. She then looked into the cup and tried to find specific patterns in the dregs that remained. there were a few specific shapes she looked for and it was read and interpreted very simularly to rune stones. There was also something about specific herb gathering and groupings in the dregs.
