Greetings all...
Got a debate going with a few friends, its goes like this:
Do our names have power to influence who we are and what we do? Is it in the history of our names or is it in the act of naming? Or are names just names?
I believe that words and names hold great power. I think that names and the act of being named has a little magic.
What say the estemed members of VR?

There has been a scientific study on names. If you have a pretty name you get further in the world. In my opinion, it depends on your feeling of what pretty is. Definately, names have power.

Hiya LadyLoveCat and thanks for the thoughts ... for me I know I went to amazing lengths to name my son when he was born because its a tag that is with you for your life time (even if he changed it, he would always be that name). hmmm, did he grow into his name or did the name influence who he has become as a man? Do not laugh to hard...after all that deep thought the name that spoke to me was Brian Vincent...it was a big name for a little man, but he has grown into just what I envisioned the name to be, strong, brave and trustworty. ~Lady~

do they have power? hmmm im sure it doesnt hurt to have a name with a great meaning for example it wouldnt be so bad to walk around and have your name as Hercules ^_^, my name means "God is within" so when i learned that it felt pretty good but my last name is latin i believe for Brown...

I got named Jonathan, I wish it was nickademious or something old sounding, cause that's how I feel! Maybe I smoke to much?LOL But there is some names that I think carry power, not to mention that when people believe in something, that something seems to grow more power/respect/ known. And also how you say it. I find it odd, but I think Laura is a very seductive name, just for a prime example people I know agree with me?

This is kinda my point...is a little weird.
It seems to be true for a number of peeps I know...which just reinforces my belief that names and the naming of a person has a little magic or just a little more to it than just a name.
I know there are many myths and stories out there about how it is giving power to others if they know your real or full name.
Not sure why but its aways chimmed true for me.

I think are names do have power, in the sence that our own self-image is a powerful tool.

When I was a child, I deided to put a hyphen between my first and seciond name (making me Debbie-Anne) as I really liked it. I dont know why, but I really wanted this name, as I thought it 'suited' me better.

When I was about ten years old, I cahnged my surname from my fathers to my stepfathers, so I went from Leigh to Stewart. I dont get on with my stepdad, and often ascociate changing my surname with bad times.

Lately Ive been seriously considering changing my name back. But then again, I see Debbie-Anne Leigh as the 'child' me, and Stewart the teenage me, and Im not sure what to do.

It is my belief that our names do hold power... not for us but for others... power over another thing resides with the name/ you must know what you are trying to affect before you can do anything to that object (whether human or not)

Names definitely have power people will form an opinion you based on your name. I could believe it has a strong influence on your life However I could also believe that your personality could hold more power than a name and therefore counter it.

She believes in numerology and stated so did her parents. (never got into it me self) She stated they named her to control her and now she is renaming herself to make herself feel better and take control of the numerolgy process. Her new name is a more in control and finacially driven name.
Thought to me self...cool, whatever brings you peace and balance in your life.
Be well all and I promise to ponder something with a little more meat on for my next form.

Never really thought of my name having any power. But in English(like Renaissance and the country) it means warrior. Not sure if that's how I come off as to others.

Mine means Determined Guardian from the Valley of the Green Forest.

well lets see when you all put it that way names do hold some significance to what you give em but not necesarilly like i usually go by the spanish terms como te llama or comment t'apple tu. because it means how do they call you. and I have recieved many names in my life and my most favorite one is ke hao which was given to me my this chinese girl. It means sweet sounding :). I was like huh? me sweet sounding but yeah. I say the given name sometimes describe you but not the one at birth when your role has not yet been developed

some names can be strong names, others can be pretty names, i think in olden times a lot could be said of u from ur name, the same is true today in some countries and cultures

lol especialy in the latin culture where you have the name of your incestors in you end up bieng "de" some old farts name. I love that concept. I wish we could say our names like in the tv show highlander you know duncan mcleod from the clan of mcleod it just tell you right there your culture and everything and if your people were noble warriors they would know right away or what ever rep.

I've just finished reading the Silmarillion where names originally were descriptions of that person. some people were called "star of the west" and such like. so there is meaning in that and a sense of power i guess.

I am called Gareth. it's a kind of rare name. But Gareth originally came from the welsh name Gward. which has no meaning that anyone can find. Gareth therefore has the meaning "Mysterious"

i sometimes feel that i am a blank space to be filled with experiences from life. But names these days have little meaning.

My girlfriend is getting rats at somepoint. two of them and she's letting me name one. after a bit of research i chose the name "Kementari" which was the surname of a character in The Silmarillion who was the creator of all nature, from trees to "the small and secret things in the mould"
