I have been wiccan for a long time now. I want to know diffrent veiws on WitchCraft. Most people who I talk to say that witchcraft is evil. I beg to differ......do you?

It all depends how you use it.That's what makes the difference.

I believe that witchcraft is a dark power. That's about it. Doesn't neseccarly make you evil. Just someone that has a dark power. With white magic is a different point of view.

I practiced withcraft and to do anything evil wouldn't even come into my mind and btw it was dark withcraft!

Really it all depends on how it is used... as ther are spell that can help and harm.... I mean if you could save a life via a spell or potion that you conjored up, how could that bee seen as evil.... its all in the context that its used

those who call themselves normal are basically brainwashed by their religion and therefore say its "evil" .......but to be quite frank with you....if u feel its not evil then to hell with everyone else!

No act is evil. Evil is a state of mind, a matter of intent. The context in which an act is done.

I don't see how my reilgion is evil yet in the burning time the pope pretty much add to the bible and said thou shall not suffer a witch to live.......but in the ten commandments they say thou shall not kill.........

It comes down to the old Church belief that women with 'any' real spiritual power are BAD.

When women were getting too close to the church in terms of power, and it was decided that 'Men of the cloth' could not marry, the Pope of the time decreed that if they did not divorce their wives, their wives would be sold into slavery.

Mystics, women who were in fact Christian and practicers of mystisim both, were hunted down and killed just as readily as those accused of practicing witchcraft.

Witchcraft is evil if you are doing it to be evil. Everything has a motivational perspective.

Each individual takes something and does with it what they want. If you use what you have for evil then you are evil, if you use it for good then you are good. Anyone can say something is evil and most times they say it because they have not taken the time to look at it and know it. Assumption is a killer for most things.

I do not believe that Witchcraft is evil, nore more so then I belive that Chrisitanity is evil, or Hinduism, or any other religion or philisophical preference.

I believe witchcraft is thought to be evil. I don't know how many times I have been yelled at by strangers that I worship the devil. Of course they are not educated enought o know the real truth so I stopped defending it. It can be both. What gives witchcraft its bad name (I am not meaning this in the wrong way) is some of the teenagers want to scare thier parents and society and take it far beyond its realm. Poeple see this and think that all wiccan's are evil. I have even has someone say that what wiccan reminds them of is the kids in school that scare the bleep out of you. But it is all in what you believe. But like any religion it has many different realms. By most Vampirism is taken thewrong way also.

Not only Wiccans practice witchcraft, and the modern disliking for witchcraft in general is the responsibility of early Abrahamic faiths..not a few teenagers.

wiccans are not supposed to use magick for evil due to the wiccan rede. But not only wiccans practice magick aswas said earlier. Most pagans prefer to use magick strictly for positive outcomes not to hurt others but some path can be construed as evil. But I dont believe that magick is truly black or white because nothing in life is one way or the other.

we study/practice witchcraft.. and we see no evil in what we do .. it is the people who's religon is not there own that calles us "evil"... we have been asked all the time "why do you worship the devil"..
as to witch we answer... "at what time did i ever say i did".. dont worry bout what other people think.. there are a lot who dont like it.. but the people who are of the same likeness as you, you will never find a better person, because they dont pass judgement..

All religions have some sort of negative repution,anything that has to do with withcraft is more due to I'll repeat myself,what happened in the past.

I agree that it depends on how you use witchcraft, it can be used for good or evil purposes. I have been a practising Wiccan for 5 years and i personally believe in the Wiccan Rede - what you do unto others will be returned to you threefold. I like to use it for good although i have been tempted lol. The Craft itself isnt evil, it depends on the intentions of the person using it.

The craft is only evil if the user is evil and can be used for good as well It depends on the person weilding the spell ...

It's only evil if you make it that way. Just like words, if you mean them in an evil way, then yeah they are evil but if you don't then they don't have to be that way...

It all depends on what type of Wiccan is being praticed, or how the rituals and ceramonies are being used.

So all in all, it all depends. Magic and faith, for the most part is more of a neutral aspect of life. Its only the people who pratice it or use magic that turn the faith and magic into something else.

Like that of being apart of the Golden Dawn, I have learned minor rituals and ideals of order. Within it we are not to pratice Black Magic, which brings harm to others, to ourselves and even summon things not supposed to be summon. Doing so can cause serious repercutions to ourselves and those about us.

Not to mention if can shorten our life spans and inpede in our path to trancendency.

I agree with mearhinas and a few of the others- witchcarft is just like anything else in this world and life- it has it's good sides and it's bad sides, and even if in theory wicca in and of itslef is neither one or the other, how a person uses it determines it's path-and unfortunately the evil that men do more often than not tends to be what the majority of people not only see but are drawn to, for better or worse

Like most things you always have a good and bad side it just depends how u use it, but people fear what they dont know, and society hasnt helped much in making most people believe that witchcraft is eveil .. l mean geez we use to burn and make innocent people driown!

Can you practice black magick with out harm coming to you? Most people I talk to practice black magick..... but wouldn't it come back on you three fold?

In Gardenarian..I'm fairly certain the Three Fold Law actually only applies to Wiccans.

Black Magic will always come back to you at one point or another. Someone who believes they can control what they summon or invoke is stupid if they try to use it to harm or try to summon something not really inclinded to listen.

Like I said, it degrades the soul of the person who practices, it also puts all those around them in danger.

As for the three fold laws, I believe MRD is right and it only applies to the practices and mindsets of those that follow the wiccan traditions.

Good topic.
WitchCraft or Magic(k) is neither good nor evil. It is neither light or dark. Why? Simple. Magic comes from Nature. Any magic user can tell you that. Nature is neither good nor evil, light nor dark.
The only difference is in the Heart of the caster. If your intent is good.....then the spell is to do good things. If your intent is to harm, then your spell is for that purpose. But, the spell itself is not evil. It is the intent that determains what a spell does or does not do. And the intent comes from the heart.

Wiccans believe strongly in that because of the 3 fold "law" in their belief. Anything cast out returns 3 fold. Wiccan's are generally peace loving people and harm nothing. Almost like monks believe to respect all living things. Same difference!

I got a book at the library called "Witches Craft. A multidenominational Wiccan Bible" By: Bruce K. Wilborn

Not sure how a bible was made, there are far different veiws from each person how it came about.

it depends on how you use it really i think, i'm also a wiccan, magick is neither black nor white, we all have 'another' side to us, (well i do anyway lol) but personally i don't think witchcraft is evil, as i said it's how you use it.

I've heard of Chaos magic, but have no real idea behind what the difference of Chaos Magic is to the natural magic of the world.

If anything Magic is a natural energy which the world and all people have a connection to. When invocked through rituals and power words, the natural energy forms into subtle influences which then are used to employ the magical workings. Which there fore become the means to our ritual work and magical aspects in trying to get things to work in a positive aspect.

Yet, if this swell of living energy is pushed into a negative aspect, which goes against the very aspect of living energy, as in its made to do harm, then the living energy is twisted and made unstable. There for causing issues to those employing the powers and swells and a negative zone in the areas the magic is practiced at.

i don't see witchcraft as being evil. being a wiccan is also not evil. i've studied both. and i just don't think they are. people say they are because it's something different from what they believe. i got to a catholic school. and just a few weeks ago my theology teacher was talking about how children from broken homes fall into the dark arts. lets just say the entire class unleashed on him, he also doesn't believe in dinosaures because they aren't in the bible, and harry potter is corrupting 5 year olds. but that is all beyond my point. some people think being catholic is evil. it's all how you look at that person and how they take their beliefs.

Okay, here is what I know. According to Jane Rosemont, author of "The Witch Book: The Encyclopedia of Witchcraft, Wicca, and Neo-paganism", Witchcraft has been around for thousands of years. It was here before Christain times, and was accepted. But then, two thousand years after Chrisitanity started, Wiccans started to be attacked because the new chirch had make it look like it was Evil.
"At this time, then, Witchcraft came to be lumped together with Satanism (actually a byproduct of Chrstanity), black magic, and all things negative, in as attempt to do away with them."

It depends on who is using the witchcraft, what is is being used for, and HOW the person is using it. Some can be evil...some aren't. It just all depends...

Yes and no... People can take witchcraft to an evil place. It is more of the intent of the witch that makes it evil or not. If you cast a love spell to bring you the love of your life.. That is not evil but if you cast a love spell on someone changing their free will then you have caused harm or used your powers with evil intent.

As most of you have said Witchcraft is double sided there is both good and bad, light and dark. And yes it all really does have to do with what you do with that magick. But what I have not seen mentioned is that One; there is a 3-fold rule, whatever magick you work will come back on you. And Two, There is a line in the rede the states Harm none do what you will, if your magick is dark or the deity that you worship is dark that does not mean you are evil, but if you are working your magick to harm then you are doing the job of evil. Magick is basically color blind it only does what you make it do, it is more or less a tool, you can set and work magick all day long and do spells to get things for yourself but if you don’t get up off your but and do something, then your magick will not work. It is all in the eye of the beholder. And yes I do use magick I have been a practicing Wiccan for over 12yrs. And started learning about witchcraft and Wiccan magick and other types long before that. Witchcraft its self is not evil, Its what you do with it that determines what it is. If you’re evil then perhaps so is your witchy way, and that mad bad mojo will come back on you.

My experiences with witcraft are that its not a matter of good or evil, that just depend on the person performing the ceremony, rite, or incantation....everything has a good and bad side to it, witchcraft is like nature...it has good and bad. demons and its "angels", its a matter of what the purpose of the majik is and the hearts desire of the person performing it.

In witchcraft their is no absolute good, because you are tampering with the elements, a order. But your base for doingit is what defines it as good or evil. If you are harboring an evil intent when you are practicing, then I believe you are practicing "negative"or "evil" magick. But you are trying to change/bring/etc for a good intent, then by no means is it "evil".

The craft is not good nor bad it is how the person who uses it that makes it so. I f you use it for evil things then you are evil not the magick, same goes for using it for good. most people believe it to be evil because about the last few hundred years the catholic/christian churches were in charge of historical lore and teaching.....there were times when the only place to get educated was by the church....so modern society still holds to what it knows as history....false as it may be....
it take time to change peoples perceptions...the kind of time that I doubt perceptions will be much better by the time I die of old age....

I agree with every one else, Witchcraft is not evil or good. I is how it is used. Example: if you cast a spell on me to make me win the lottery........that would be good not evil.

Magick is never both fully but there are some spells that are fully white or dark.

I am wiccan as well and have recently been critisized for my non-belief in god...I don't understand what gives someon the right to judge me when they don't even know me, but on here i hope this never occurs for if it does and you decide that I am not a good or decent person because I am aethiest then i will not tolerate you.

This is a repeat of what everyone else has said I'm sure. Withcraft is just like anything else. It's up to the practioner. It's just like people in general. Some are bad and some aren't. It's just that person's choice. Anything you here about witchcraft being evil from most people is merely because they are naive. The prejudice began in the Dark Ages, and that's something that's hard to overcome, even centuries later.

I guess I'd have to agree with most of what everyone is saying. It really depends on how you look at it, and the reason for it.

I am pagan and I would have to say that witchcraft is not evil. Some may wish to take it to an extreme and make it that way. But for all intents and purposes it is not an evil thing.

on the note of the 3 fold law...yes it is a belife in the wiccan faith..but many other faiths believe that you will reep what you sow..

With something as broad as witchcraft there are a lot of different factors determining if it is "evil" or not.

One being who's judging it. A Christian Fundamentalist is going to say it's evil and a work of Satan, whereas a Buhddist will not think so.

The type of witchcraft also plays a part. Something that would cause harm to another could be considered evil.

It's really a tough question to get a straight answer from.

Witchcraft itself is neutral like nature itself. Good and evil are just opinions people have to describe what they think of an event or situation.

Again, I think it's a matter of perspective and the individual's motivations. Not being a wiccan, but knowing quite a few, my experience is that they are as diverse as about any other group. Everyone is different. Each with their own motivations.

As most people have already stated...it depends on the motivation. For example:

There is a spell that seperates people in a relationship. If the spell is used to end feelings between people in a bad relationship or stop feelings from an obsessed person then the spell has been used for good.
However if the spell is used to end a relationship for personal gain the it is used for "evil" purposes.

It depends on how you chose to use it. Religion is not evil, people are. Many people who say that witchcraft is evil are simply ignorant. They do not understand it, and only believe what they want to hear.

I prefer to think of it as a natural thing though ...somewhat neutral.

look bottom line is: if it feels good to you then its good, if it feels bad then its bad.....its up to the person not the religion whether they want to be bad or good......dont forget for examples christians have killed jesus, and non believers and have also killed anyone who made them afraid, like witches (fortune tellers, people who saw things, etc...) ...just cos they made they were out of the norm, they believed it was the devil's work so they had to end the life.

Okay although it was split into two posts. That is the Wiccan Rede. No witchcraft is not evil, nor do I personally find it dark. Saying it is dark is basically the same thing as saying that what the indians believed was dark. The whole religion is based on nature, and when most think spells they think..... bubble bubble toil and trouble, eye of newt, tongue of frog. That is not what it is. as a wiccan i must say that witchcraft is neither evil nor good. it is how you use it and for what purpose. that is why there is a threefold rule.

I am wiccan also and with any religion there is the option for the good/bad sides or practices. Is witchcraft evil? Well it depends on what kind of witchcraft you are practicing. Noone can answer that question but you. There is white witchcraft and black witchcraft. If you are using the craft to do harmful things to others then yes it is evil.

A true witch will not look at black or white, good or evil. We tend to stay neutral. More towards the grey. We are neither good nor bad. Everything done is for a purpose. whether to gain from it, learn from it, or teach it.

I wanted to add to what Mrd said about the 3 fold law.. It was not originated by wiccans but is an ancient law by the Hammurabi of Babylon in 1795-1750 BC. he was a king who established a list of laws dominant for babylon. The 3 fold law was printed on a black stone monument which was later found in 1901 in the persian mountains not in babylon.. which means it was moved.
