I was recently watching the special features on the new Underworld dvd. There was a part called Fang vs Fiction. In that they interviewed a few vamps in Amsterdam.
The point of this is those vamps talk about tattoos that mark then to other Vamps. I've never heard of anything like that before. Have any of you? I don't have some kind of marking tats. I've never even heard of such a thing!
do you mean like a glyph? or an idententifing mark other than that..
Never heard such thing either maybe to show in which type of clan/house/coven they are?
I have never heard of vampires having such marks, but I have heard of donors being marked by vampires.
I've only ever hear of this with a few covens, that when you join the the "mark" you with their symbol allowing any other vamps know who your aligned with.... to the common masses its just a weird tat... that the extent to my knowledge of such... only ever sat in a coven meeting where they did this my current one does not
yeah i have heard of places that mark there coven. but have never seen it..
Ive heard of it as well. I think it would be nice to get a well done House/Coven symbol.
Oh.. and Hello to all. This is my first post in the forums.
Never heard of it o-o Maybe some people ... think of it as a ritual initiation thing? No clue - shrugs-
I've heard of marking coven members, but I don't think that's what you're talking about.
i've heard a few things about markings, but never really took much notice to be truthful
I thought it was something they made up for blade to. If not it seems like a gang member thing to do.
I saw that Sinclair, and been wondering about it too. I thought it ws a particular symbol that you can have tattooed, or even wear as jewellry, to show you're vampyre, but as nobody has heard of it, i'm wondering if it really does exist...maybe its just something that they do in that club the guy you're on about was speaking from
I recall seeing it in the Blade Movies but that is about it. Anymore people get different "marks" for just about anything.
i have heard of it done by a high family of deep belivers and also in the moves like blade
I have heard of glyphs/marks like in Blade being used on those in a particular house/coven also like what real gangs do.. they are rare but have heard of such.
The only place i've seen/heard of it was in the Blade movies.
I have never really heard anything about this..but i have heard something along the lines of a tat that shows what you are..something that represents you....like teeth marks or something like that
i have heard of this befor, its old news, been goin on for years, think of it more as a fraternity type thing. once your a member your always a menber
The donor gets a mark. Especially if they donate to the same vamp more than once.
Damnation. My last post went up there twice ::fumes::.
I've only heard of donors having a mark, but never seen it before.
Hello to all my first post.....
Gee, No one seems to know much on the subject. I vote its a consperacy! Government is covering it up *being sarcastic here* Secret societys held together by drinking blood and getting a tribal marking. Woah! lol
Well I havnt heard anything on the subject but yeah, very interesting none the less, and I figured it was just a Blade movie add in.
Rember this comes from the source in my head, so don't take to much into it, i could be wrong.
Marks or Items of the Vampire are real. It like real old family crest in the Vampyre Community. Mostly in the past before turning a slave would be branded with the Mark of his family, that way no one could steal their slave or basically meat.
The true borns never wore such marks, but were allowed family crests. In forms of rings, necklaces, or even tattoo, place over the right eye. I don't know how many true family exist. Or if some of the newer ones who don't follow the old family have taken these marks of the crest as something cool.
I hope this helps, but remember Wild Child was crazy for 200 years, so my information might be wrong.
Um, well, yes, some "vampires" are marked, but only sometimes. Usually this is telling everyone what coven they belong to or whatever...kind of like a gang.
yes ive heard of something like that. theres this programme i saw once on tele called HEX and there was this guy that could neva die and he wanted to getthis load of ppl so tt he cud defeat this women who was also like him - neva died and all the ppl the guy like, abducted to be on his side got this mark on the side of there necks to show they were with him and not the women. IS THT LIKE WHAT YOUR ON ABOUT??
Well it's nice to see I'm not the only one out of the loop on this!
Okay maybe I'm crazy, but I remember a movie that came out a while ago called Blade. Now if I were an impressionable youth with WAY too much time on my hands I would think that this was a good idea and try to get all my friends in my social circle to do the same thing and start a trend.
Of course that is just my point of view
I haven't heard of it, but i know groups of friends of mine who have all gotten the same tatt in the same place, but they're not in any way vamp related
Other than some selected movies, I wasn't aware of marks. But most interesting discussion on them. Thanks
Ok at first I was going to say they watched Blade too many times, but to think about it, it comes from the same thing as with covens. Houses never marked there members, to my knowledge, but covens did. Normally this didn't relate to vampires, but to witches. However, it is possible for a coven to decide to mark each other, especially if there were numerous covens in that area. It's easier to think about it in terms of gangs. If the vamps on the north side of town didn't converse with the ones on the south side of town. They might want to seperate themselves, and a mark would tell them apart.
i agree i have never heard of it but i guess it does kinda make sense if it is thought about

i have...but not all vamps have them. i guess it's kinda like a brand...
I was part of a coven/sisterhood of four and we had matching rings.
Would we want identifying marks or keep anonymous?
As the question says the vamps said they all had identyfting tattoos I'm not sure why there is suprise to be honest.
A lot of groups get the same tattoo to denote their gang, soldiers do it to denote their regiment, so why shouldn't a group of vampires do the same?
The Blade movies have their glyphs, their are Vamp glyphs from the SoulReaver games, I have two of them myself as well as my other vamp tats.
I have actually heard a bit about this type of thing. Mostly extremist did it though. But is not uncommon in the U.S. but you have to know where about to look for these kinds of things.
i have heard of it as a matter of a fact i recently found a vampire haven here in korea and they do have markings for their covens and houses
ive heard something like that the cattle like people have marks then the owner the vamp has other make to show that that person is thiers
This is what happens when a movie makes an impression.
That's exactly what I was thinking ogunshi. The only place I have heard of this in is in Blade, and I think an episode of C.S.I. where the girls were marked by their "master".
it would sound as if fiction was being made into a fact with the hollywood industry and such. but here is a thought, most stories or folk lore are told with at least a single grain of truth.
Dont all 'secret' societies have marks of some kind?
I think I noticed such a mark once, but the person I noticed it on was intent on my not looking.
I've only heard of vampires marking their donors as a possession type of thing.
I've only heard of vampires marking their donors as a possession type of thing.
never heard about that i will have to watch it on the dvd..interesting though!
Markings, Glyphs, Sigils, call them what you may, have been used since time unrecorded. You can look for clues to these in old grimoires, remember, vampires have always been referred to as 'demons' through out time.
i9ve never seen that... i also dont go out much... and i live in america... and america follows christian standars of acceptable things.... maybe we should all go to amsterdam... or form our own nation...
However, I am not a donor.....I am the master of my particular circle.
Hello all, this is my very first reply ever.
I sort of agree with ogunshi on this. I have never heard of this except in movies so there are probably some relatively impressonable folks out there that would imitate art and get glyph markings or something similar to mark members.
However, it also makes sense that certain covens would mark there members in a different manner. And I could see it as being a mark under the skin or only visible to preternatural eyes. I cannot buy that European vampires of old actually had tatoos though - tatooing wasn't very popular in any European social circles and was rare indeed. However, in the Asian Pacific they very well might have tatooed each other. Social mores in that area were different and weren't influenced by the Holy Roman Empire's dogma.
Guess I am showing why I want to get that PhD and be a history professor. Sorry - I can get long winded like a good prof too *smiles*.
~Mina~
could it be that someone is just saying that in the dvd? because they got a wierd tat? because like most of the others that posted i've never heard of it ;-)
I have seen that show....and I must admit...hearing of something like that is quite intriguing....
I'll agree that this phenomena is mostly film related, but also agree that it is not at all unusual among modern covens or groups..save that they have that kind of dedication. I, myself, have such a tattoo on my shoulder that I share with about a dozen others. So yes, it does happen.
- D
my tattoo in my back marks me as wiccan, my partner sharews the same symbol, but thats not a universal symbol and i have done it out of free choice, maybe there are vampires out there whom have the same volountary symbols
yes the above post sounds good to me.
in my path as well, there is a sigil for Enki as well as for other demons...and many of us in past and future dedicated ones I am sure will by choice place sigil tattoo more so again by choice.
but in my groups there are many of us who have the sigil. and there is a certain bonding there.
I suppose it can be said that there are both physical and mental 'marks' placed upon certain individuals to let them know they're 'different,' or perhaps 'taken'-- just as a promise ring or wedding band is concerned.
Perhaps (laughable by me, sorry) the mark is even more binding (depending on the person, coven, etc) than a wedding band. (at least nowadays, right?)
This is an interesting topic as you have to ask yourself would you allow someone to mark you? So that you would technicaly belong to someone?
I think not!
Vampires in different areas do things differently. Some vampires kind of have a common ground so others will notice they are the same kind. The Ankh or Symbol of Life is the prime example of this but using that as the only way to know if a person is vampiric or not is going a bit far. Like some who wear the cross are not Christian. They wear it because they like it. Not for what it stands for.
I have herd of such things in moovies and real life but rearly in real life.
yep I have seen that in movies like , blade for instance, I am sure if that amsterdam group wants to apply tattoos for marking they very well could do whatever their leader wants,.. It's probably more of a initiation thing ? Personally I wouldnt get a tatoo for acceptance into a group.
I dont have any actual knowledge on the subject but I do have an opinion. I wouldnt see a marking or mark as saying I belonged to someone but as a marking or mark saying I did belong to something. It makes since in a gang type way. Street gangs and what not have been doing that kind of thing forever.
oh yes...its praticed here but the marks are in a way where anyone else would just think its an interesting tattoo
at first I taught it was only in blade, but now...I'm not so sure, I will have to do more research on that
The only time I have ever seen or heard of a mark was as it was mentioned earlier in the replies/responses in the blade movies. Not that a mark is unheard of or not done it very well may be in established Covens or Houses. Then again I do know that when Blade first came out there was a fad of people who decided it would be "cool" to have the mark/glyph tattooed on thier bodies.
in my vampire coven we have coven tattos coven niclace and rings to mark us
all i have heard of is that sometimes a vampire will mark his prey with a visible scar before feeding, this wards off any other vampire. also a common sign are the scars from where the vampire was admitted to the clan - usually a scar on each ten digits on the hand.
I haven't heard anything like that before, but now I'm going have to look into that!
I have a tatt to show my vampire alliances. It is as said before once your in you are in.
Other than seeing it in the Blade movies, this is something I never heard of before now.
i have only heard of anything like that in the Blade movies
I have never seen such, but heard... yes. It's not common, but can be done.
I'd heard somewhere that a black rose was the universal vampire symbol - i'd assumed thats what the guy in fang or fiction was referring to...
My coven has its own sigil, which has slight differences for feeders, the donor and the Fera. None of us has it tattooed yet as I've not long designed it, but my neighbour is a tattooist so we're getting a group discount when we do get round to it
well seeing as i was born with the spirits of two vampires, they tell me that there is such a thing but to have seen a marking or a tatoo is a rare thing indeed. but i have my doubts.
I've only seen that in the Blade movies. I didn't see that special, although last Halloween I saw a program about vampires on *gasp* the History channel. (yes i am almost aiddicted to that channel) and I was all like, what if Hunters and Slayers see that....they're in deep shit.
But I would like to know if those really exsist.
i remember it from Blade too. i think i'll have to watch the Underworld dvd to just to be curious.
Yep I agree with the mass, only in Blade have I seen that.
i was at a fear convention in toronto (its coming up soon again this year) they had something like that going on at a bootj, only teirs was fake.
it was done in blade and i do know of atleast one house in real life that has it's members get gliph tats
If they do it then it must be fairly localised as not many have heard of it and therefor would have no clue what the marks meant...
Not much point in having to always explain them!!
I am too much of a chickenshit to get a tatoo.
I hate pain man.
like i have said many times before. Too many people follow the hollywood crap
Different Clans/houses/coven's have different marks some might have a sword&snake , another might have words...its to show each other that:
1) They are vampire's
2) which clan/coven etc they are from
3) To show that you are in their territory etc
They put symbols up on street walls or lampposts, mailboxes etc....I met afew vamps with i went to amsterdam aswell...that's where i got the knowledge...i think the guy said it was a form of silent communication with other vamps!!
Vampires all over the world do things differently than others.
Yes. I have heard about them thru Covens being marked into that Coven and thats about it.
I have heard about it, and seen it forst hand with these markings. They do it to show where you belong. I have heard about some wiccans doing it to thier mates once they get married. They get tattoos to show thier new family status
i have never heard of that....i will have to watch that now.
i would get a tattoo though.
I've only heard of them in cases of marking blood donors and pets. interesting.
yeah i been search around but i still havent found anything on gylphs tattooed on vampires yet
I have heard of it, but never seen it. I guess with all myth's there is a grain of truth somewhere so who knows?
I have heard of such things and yes I do believe that they exist for what I don't know but they must serve a purpose of some kind to them.
