I was watching the news just now, and if you've ever been stuck watching Fox News in the last three days you'll recognize the story I'm talking about, and it seems that the Oklahoma gentleman who killed an 11 year old girl, then had sex with her, planned to cannibalize her, and hid her body in a big plastic tub is saying that "Vampires are serial killers, I wanted to be like them". Crazy McCrazy-pants? Yes. But will the general public care? Probably not. Be on the lookout for a backlash of sorts, people thinking that since you visit this site or others like it, that you are planning on serial slaughter. Ghost.

I would have to agree with MRD in the respect that the vampires in media are technically flawless serial killers who would never get caught if it wasn't for the one lover who goes to rescue the girl.

I doubt anyone is seriously going to care that much. Most people would chalk him off to be crazy and that would be the end of it.

People generally absorb information at a low level. One news report in a month is an incident, two is a problem, three or more, is a fundamentally negative image portrayal, that will influence opinions of those that seek a genuine rapport with the media, as a decent and intelligent people.

Apart from the mildly amusing escapades of Mr Sharkey, there is little positive news to counteract the continual stream of bad press.

It only takes a few high profile and as in this case, particularly shocking events to cause the kind of uproar similar to that which circled the Columbine Shootings. Marilyn Manson was partially blamed for it...If memory serves.

I conceed the point that as I've not seen any news of this on UK News or websites, it's hardly likely to have a major impact in itself, but my point is that these build up over time and locations and as more people look into it, so they come across these stories, which far outwiegh the 'feelgood' ones.

If these efforts are to succeed, then we need to start making good news, fast. Any events like this one above, can only be detrimental in the long run, both for the image of the vampyre as an 'ordinary' person and for those that are suffering due to a lack of availability of concise information.

Yes, these things are being done as we speak here, but why have you focused only on the physical books, even those that don't like books can plug themselves into a TV show, or become addicted to websites...lol

Sure, people can go looking in bookstores, but I know for fact that when I was looking myself for informative works on this subject, I found very little, even in specialist occults stores. To say there are hundreds of books, ok, but how many are of any real material worth? I found that the majority were seeking to exploit a new 'fashion', lets call it 'vampire chique'.

I would not worry, people are always going to judge you and look down upon you. This is only one incident being brought to attention. This man was just sick. There will be no backlash, people have bigger things to worry about.

Now that I think about it, I believe it will be an incident that is remembered but not brought up unless someone begins to talk about these subjects...we will hopefully only have to worry about it if someone brings it up, and that could be very rarely that it even happens.

Thus far, the people I've talked to about those subjects (Vampirism, Cannibalism, Necrophelia, Pedophelia, etc....) have been so disgusted with it they actually did want to go research it themselves...mind you, not extensively. They just found definitions, and I find it amusing that even the definition was too much for them. Of course they are still fighting it, but not very much because I can bring up points that they cannot really retaliate on because it has been known to be, well, "true" if you will. It has become professionally known as these things, and you cannot simply deny what has been "diagnosed" in one's personality if they have commited the crime.

I hope you see what I mean; sometimes it is hard for me to voice my opinion in ways that others will see what I mean and at least think on it...I can sound plain stupid sometimes, but I hope I don't on this subject because I find it intriguing, if you will...

That's true, I see your point. They more than likely are thinking that I am sick and insane myself...which in a way, I can be, but I'm dead serious when it comes to stuff like this because I truly want people to acknowledge the different groups and not assume that someone who eats flesh and human meat is a vampire and someone who more or less desecrates a dead body is a vampire...because yes, it gives us a worse name than we already have in their eyes.

I have been watching this on Fox all weekend long and this morning on the Today show as well I havnt heard him say he was acting as a Vampire or anything like that.

I did hear that they found books that had to do with Cannabalism in his apartment but nothing about Vampires.

Different news networks spread different words...so it may be a good thing they do...because it will not be across the country, it will probably be broken up and have many different versions...

I think the problem with this is that the vast majority of people only know about vampires and the like from what they absorbed from the news and TV shows... i.e. CSI.
To go off on a tangent I watched one CSI that revolved around the vamp community but in the end the killer was a man who really, honestly thought he was one of the Hollywood style vampires.
To get back to my point when people see this sort of thing publicized they probably won't think much of it until later -when- a group of people decided that self-proclaimed vampires are evil and should be censored. They aren’t going to care what kind of people they hate, they're going to hear the word "vampire" and see old Dracula or that child-killing man from the news.
Things like this are why modern vampires stay underground.
It makes me sick but you can't force the public to see it another way in a heartbeat. Gradually getting positive exposure is the best bet. There have been a number of killers who have killed in a vampiric like fashion i know of about 3 in recent years in the UK. But think about it vampirism and vampires are everywhere now from movies to music cereal boxes to cartoons, children are growing up around them. And children who grow up in a broken or violent home may use it as an outlet or as a role model but the same can be said for video games and music i don't think it based on certain things even though media has an influence there must be a problem there in the first place. And as for serial killers if you look at the most famous ones you'll see that they had gay tendencies. so saying vmpirism is the root cause for serial killing is as bad as saying that your sexuality can be a main prefernce to killing its all rubbish. They need to find an answer to what they can't understand and vampirism is one of the less UNPC routes to go! its quite sad really!

i would not worry about a backlash. the simple truth is the majority of the worlds population knows of vampires and the underworld but for whatever reason refuses to admit its existence. most i would say will have trouble believing the murder actually happened. in this day and age most have to 'see' it to believe it.

From what I saw his name is Kevin Underwood and he has been researching Cannibalism for a while again I still have not seen him say anywhere on any news cast that he was or is a Vampire.

Razel we have had our differences of oppinion but on this i have to agree with you on this.

Some people are not worth the effort and will always see the bad side in Vampires, because of media hype and the multi media frenzy that is life today.

Although Stabb makes valid points as well. Unless we do try and educate the masses of the true side of Vampire exsistance then we have no chance of changing the views of those sais people.

We are not going to convince the entire world, but if we change the view of even just 1 from every 1000 then the world will be a better place

I agree as well that people should be educated that there are things out there that they do not truly understand. It would also be great if people would make sure they know what they're saying, so that a mistake like saying vampire instead of cannibal won't have negative consequences on those who had nothing to do with such acts. The possible backlash of such idiocy has plagued us for so long and it is saddening. I think however in a few situation contacts have began to be made with the general public that is starting to help lesson the likelyhood of such backlashes. All any one of us can do is be self responsible and if we have the means, help educate those around us discretely.

In my previous posts i said that there would be little or no backlash...Well here in Alberta, there was a slaying in Medicine Hat. The two charged were a 23 year old man and a 12 year old girl. They killed the girls' parents and her brother. 12 YEARS OLD!!!! "Goth/Vampire" killing style...it said. What exactly does that mean?
