I was wondering......What would you call the Relationship between a "Sire" and ick..."Fledgling"? There is always that wording right there, but how would you describe it? There's the one-on-one love relationship there to actually "Sire" another. Then there is the sort of "Parent-Child" idea there.......How would You describe it......Again, this is your opinion, just as most of my threads are, you needn't substantiate or get into heated, bloodly battles over each other's posts......lol I just thought I'd put that out there.....

It would be quite a complicated relationship...though not impossible and outrageous, it is more, as thou hast said, a parent-child relationship or a master-apprentice relationship , even mentor-disciple ... just what I think.

are you referring to mythical vampires? or "modern day" as i wouldnt know what a role of sire would include in modern day vampires, but as for the mythical beings there are many things that can be taught to "vampires in training" well atleast i would think so

Obviously the motivation would be a major factor in the "relationship". Why would YOU choose someone to spend eternity with? Love? Companionship? Parent/child relationship?

I think the parent/child thing would only work with your actual family...

Within the community, if the terms are used at all, it has always been my understanding that they relate more closely with Teacher/Rabbi and Student/Follower.

I don't care for the terms at all and prefer "Mentor or Teacher" to "sire." The term "fledgeling" just gives me the creeps and, in my ne'er humble opinion, belongs more in the pages of fiction than here :)

And to you, Joli, and everyone else that objects: I just felt it necessary to put it in such terms; as to get the full meaning of the post conveyed to the consensus.......If you still disagree, please come up with a few words that immediately denote Mythical Vampiric Relationships that everyone will know of......Ones Specific Enough as those I used......gah -Insterts another 0.03$ :P Happy?

I agree with Daremon, just as 'Sire' sounds like an 'owner', an 'underling' or 'fledging' sounds invaluable, less than.

Teacher and student- there is nothing degrading there, each title is defined as a person of value, one sharing knowledge, one seeking it.

Personally, no matter what terms you use, I lean towards the parent - child relationship. We learn from those who are older and look up to them.

It is your "job" as a sire, master, teacher whatever, to share your knowledge and help your student gaining more, also be there to guide them.

I like the idea of teacher and student. It sounds more like a respectful relationship to me. I hear all the other terms but I feel as though to feel like your owned or less then would not be something I would partake in. I completly respect the roles of my elders and look to them for knowledge.

well in my opinon no-one is owned... and as for titles well they are just that titles, I feel that the child learns from the elder person whether it be a parent or not. just my opinon, we all learn from our surrounding so it has been forever and I am sure it will be so on... just always try to teach them what is right and what is important. :)

I think the titles would be part of what is decided between the ones involved in the relationship. However Mentor is the one that seems to fit if teacher/student is not acceptable. But whatever the ones involved are comfortable with should be their choice.

Sire is more closely related to "parent" than "owner"

Fledgling is definitely a "child" connotation

I think the teacher/student or eternal lover relationships are the only options where this would really work

To me the term sire does not necessarily denote possession. Sire falls in the same category as father-figure, advisor, mentor, tutor, instructor, etc. Also, fledgling is not at all a degrading term. Fledgling simply means someone that is inexperienced.

I think that the relationship between a sire and a fledgling is, at the root, a relationship of love. I mean, who would want to sire someone that they hated? ..lol.. Not me. So, then, logically a sire loves his fledgling in some fashion. Whether it be of a romantic nature or a nurturing nature.

I say Sire can have differant meanings yet all be the same thing. A sire can be a teacher or it can also be a lover or even a creater. There is not one way to explain the titel.

*tackles Sacred and covers him in sloppy kisses* What would you call OUR relationship? Are we eternal lovers? Parent/child? Teacher/student? How about all of the above? You love me...I love you. You're protective of me as a parent is of a child. You teach me things...ALLLLL the time. In the end, don't all relationships have all of these qualities??? Don't they need them to work?

The term "Sire" is to my knowledge and experience, that of "father," "mother," or "parent." When a vampire sires another vampire, he/she is taking on the responsibility of teaching/instructing the neonate/fledgling in manners of being a vampire.
A Sire is all supreme - he/she is master/teacher/father/mother. If the neonate/fledgling falters or "messes up" the Sire takes all responsibility.
The neonate must adhere to the laws the Sire imposes upon him/her.
Again, this is from my own experience from my own Sire...

I suppose a Sire can have a more romantic relationship with the one he/she sires. I have seen this happen. It is not the usual case though...*smiles*

*Waiting for Sacred to come back with his usual remarks...grins*

We're talking the mythological type of vampire I would tend to see this Sire Fledgeling thing as a possible erotic conotation, alright I've read far to many Ann Rice books but I would think a vampire would want a companion with him/her that was a love interest not a child that you have to raise

Each relationship doesn't need a title, I think if one Sires another, first he becomes his teacher, mentor. Then the childe is sent out and if it needs to return then maybe an underling.

Ah, one of the most complicated relationships a vampire can have. I believe that it could be either a parent/child relationship or a romantic affair.

I personally would give my special gift to the woman I loved, so that we could exist forever in each other's arms.

Um... I don't mean to come off as a bitch here, but do you even know what the term prey means???

Prey: 1. animals hunted by other animals: an animal or animals that are caught, killed, and eaten by another animal as food

2. somebody treated unkindly by others: somebody who is attacked or receives cruel or unfair treatment from somebody else

3. killing of other animals as food: the natural practice or habit of predatory animals to hunt, kill, and eat other animals

Encarta ® World English Dictionary © & (P) 1998-2004 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

When a vampire makes a vampire out of someone else that is NOT hunting them down and eating them. I thought I would clarify so that we don't get sidetracked on THAT.

Talking fictional vampires here right???
Because I sure as hell couldn't make anyone a psy-vamp to save my life..
I think the vampire we see in books is looking for all sorts of things even at sometimes prey skylla. Depending on the story line depends on how the vampire creates another in some they must opena vein and have them drink of themselves before the person dies. Other stories it is like an infection that can be caught from the bite of the vampire. Now I believe in the case of those that would have to turn the other person by giving back the blood they have taken they do look at people as prey as they don't turn all people they find into vampires.

I always thought that the terms "sire" and "fledgling" reflected more the pecking order of things, myself.

After all, were you trying to teach someone something, you have to first be able to control the person on some level. To show someone you have control over them often teaches them a good deal of humility, and allows them to flourish a little more than just treating the person as an equal.

The human mind is automatically set to "I'm superior." So if you don't put some people in their place, they tend to mess up. As some people have pointed out, it's the sire's butt on the line if they can't get it through their newbie's thick little head.

Why take the risk? Slowly grant them their freedom, and they will respect it more.

sire is also a verb

to make a child

lings is a root word for child

sires who make lings would not have erotic stuff going on

vampire cannot be in actuality sires for, well unless they are a stud of some sort, or if they find the right woman

but even the Nephilim came to the earth to impregnate the women of the world

as long as there is still some angel in them a vampire can sire a fledgling from a human woman.

but for the most part, the vampire that craves new blood, is there as a mentor, to teach everything they have learned... and not to sack their minds, but to fill them

I know parents do not even have an effect on their young, but it is a most intimate relationship where there is more of a trade off of values, and the ling can school the sire even.

It is perhaps the best sire ling relationship, and the one who usually survives the union is the ling, of course the sire lives in the young either as parts accepted, or parts rejected.

I don't think I like the term"sire" very much myself.I have visions of wild animals mating and breeding(like horses). Guide,Mentor,or Teacher soungs better, but of course some people like to think of sire in terms of"like a king" or"superior to". The parent/child or teacher/student aspect sounds much nicer.

That for me is a hard question to answer because when I think of "siring" I think of the undead versions of vamps..which I am still very much on the fence about whether or not they exist.

As far as real vampires are concerned...I would think the relationship would depend on the two people involved. One relationship might be the parent/child and another might be two lovers. So, this one is very...not unanswerable, but difficult to answer.

Everyone here is making good points. The sire is the teacher,master,guide,whatever... they are all names for the same thing(in my beliefs) As for the parent/child aspect I don't feel that is what I would want....as a parent I want my kids to move out and live for themselves.... If I were to sire someone it would be for a relationship...Like all things you would have to teach them the rules but one day you will become equals and then where do you go...... The term teacher also works cause hell we all have had a crush on a teacher and more can come for that relationship...... but however you word it the positions are still the same.....but what do I know I'm just a lowly mosquito..

I think it comes down to how you handle the different types of love. A lover can teach you new things, but a parent teaches you how to live.

Being that the sire is already teaching the Fledgling a completely new way to live and look at life, I don't think it nessisarily would have to be a parent-child relationship. Certainly it would be easier for the fledgling to convert into the new world with
something so familiar as that, something to, so to speak, 'ween them into it', but I don't nessisarily think that's the way it would have to be.

At the same time, it would also depend greatly on how the fledgling saw the sire in the first place. If they didn't know the sire at all, certainly it would come off as a parent-child relationship for they only know that one as a teacher. At least, most likely.

If the fledgling had known the sire before, gave personality to them, saw them as a friend or lover, while learning, they would probably unconsciously seperate the idea of a parent figure from the sire if that hadn't already occured to them or they found it somehow distasteful.

And if you want to get into deep psychology, there are times in a child's life where they have such a bond with a parent that it is almost to the point or confused as a love such as that of a lover, but of course, the child is too young, too immature, too undeveloped physically and mentally, for this to be the case and... well... as everyone would agree... EW! But in the case of a sire and fledgling, sure there is the sharing and blood and blood bringing life to another, but I would say it's a bit different. The fledgling is also not physically undeveloped and is mentally more capable and ready for anything thrown at it. So while I think, yes, it'd be very easy for there to be a child-parent relationship, I think it could be different.

i will say that the relationship between the sire and his/her fledgling would be a very rocky and touchy one indeed.
due to the fact that the sire either blooded or the fledgling was born a vampire then i would say there might be some resentment between the two and there might be some murderous intent later on between them both

I agree with many people on how complicated it would be--complicated to highest degree. It would seem that there would have already be a desire for a master/servant or parent/teacher relationship there, putting vampirism aside. I have never attempted this, so I can only assume how difficult it would be to pull it off smoothly.

Mnnnnn it depends on the two individuals really. I don't consider one better or greater than the other. We all start out with the first step yes? Nobody was born at the top..Teacher and student for lack of a better terminology should remain as such. But I have experienced both sides of the coin and all parts of a relationship can be quite well divided. If the two involved are committed to each other it can be done.

Eh... had to throw this in...–noun 1. the male parent of a quadruped.
2. a respectful term of address, now used only to a male sovereign.
3. Archaic. a. a father or forefather.
b. a person of importance or in a position of authority, as a lord.

–verb (used with object) 4. to beget; procreate as the father.

I myself think of the word "Sire" to be a father figure and so it would seem the relationship to me would be more parent/child type.

I would have to say it's more of a love relationship than a teacher/student kind, after all, don't you love your parents at some point? And yes, in many situations, however disgusting, that relationship can turn into something more, just as in sibling relationships. The boundary for a such a relationship is sometimes blurred and it depends hugely on the vampires involved as well.

well, most vampires turn others into vampires for a companion. they're kind of like a parent figure, but i see them more as a teacher of leader.

Reading all of the responses has been very interesting. All have made some very good points, and for the most part I can agree with just about everyone. I for one am not offended by the term or title "sire" and know where I stand in the "pecking order" of things (mosquito)

If I were to use the term Sire it would be as a sign of respect to the one who is my mentor on my current path. But would never presume to give a name to the relationship. To me that lessens it to some extent.

I totally agree with LM. It would definately be a Master/apprentice, type deal. There really is not much of another way to look at it. Unbalanced, controlling, unjust.

In a way I say it is complicated. No matter what kind of relationship there is out there, you always have someone who has theat either less or more experiance than the other. To me age isn't really a problem, unless you make it out to be one.

i agree! it does not matter in a relationship who is or is not the sire and the dissiple. what matters is that the love they share is eternal love. a love that last for all dark eternity! thats my opion on it.

In Hollywood vampires have there fledglings depended on them for guidance on what they have become. But from the little I know of people who practice vampirism, they mostly have donors. I personally am not a vampire but it's nothing like it's portrayed in from what I heard.

Since the discussion is mythological vampires ... Sire as some have pointed out is father/creator and fledging is for lack of a better term child but only in the sense that they are as a "newborn" vampire. From there the roles dont seem to have a strict definition. Some stay in the father/chid mode others are more like companions and some lovers. But since the Sire is not like a biological father there is no taboo if they become lovers.

To me if someone turned me and was a guy I would Probable never leave his side. But I wouldn't call he master or anything I would feel so weird. I think it would be sweet if you found love and it stayed for internety.

I once read a wonderful peice of fictional work that described a brilliant relationship between 'Sire' and 'Sired' ... the writer of this book went on to say that once a Vampire is Sired it cannot remain with the one that turned it because being predatory beings vampires are very territorial...

Hence there is no relationship between Sire and Sired, save for the creator and the created...

However, if you believe in the more romaticised version, whereby a Vampire can 'turn' a lover in order to be with them eternally... this is quite different...

And besides in most 'Sire'/'Sired' relationship these terms are dropped for more favourable terms such as 'Master' 'Lord' etc

Personally I think that the relationship would be very much like the one that a younger girl would have with a much older suitor. A love relationship, with a dash of parental care. Perhaps I am wrong, but that is how I would look at it.

I think the term 'Sire' has to be taken into context. Obviously it means something different when regards vampires than it does when talking about livestock!

Seriously though, a Sire, to me, is simply someone who guides you in a way of life that they are more experienced in.

To some people that can mean more, and there is undoubtedly a close bond between Sire and the sired one, but this has to be what you make it.

Some people take it way too seriously and think that they own the one they sire, or conversely, the sired one thinks they can lay sole claim to their Sire (as I know from an unfortunate personal experience). It has to be a relationship which both parties are equally comfortable with.

I'm lucky enough to have a wonderful relationship with my Sire, Gav, although I don't call him Sire. I'd just laugh at him if he told me to!

I think the relationship would be be determined by the ones involved. There was a reason why a sire has sired someone, Maybe they have a love and understanding between each other. The sire would have to help the one they sired through the transition. The one sired would have to have a great love and respect for their Sire.

That's just my thoughts on the question!

A sire can be a woman. My mother told me I am your mother not your best friend. It is only in the advanced age of life do we become best friends with our mothers and they unload their secrets to us. It helps understanding all woomen through your mother when it jives with what you have found in life with other females.

My sire was not my mother, and though to sire something is traditionally a male thing to do, and it is a male term, a soul lover of a woman can sire something in a man besides what he once was.

I was a most powerful human and I submitted my love to this woman, and my body was hers either to ignore or to get the best out of. She was a vampire now, now I see that, and what you love you become. Not to say I have become a woman, but true power comes from submitting your energy to causes outside of yourself, and playing roles in life not suited for men to take, it is only through the giving up of powers that powers can be achieved. Now that I have become human again I cannot talk to her, for she is with soomeone, and she will see I am back. It is a terrible thing for a man to lose his soulmate, but I must withdraw my presence from her life to not disturb her children, or take her children from their father. I respect their sire.

Hmmmm , well I suppose it all depends on what the Vampyre/Vampyres want , desire . Thewre are many different ways to look at it . It all depends I suppose on what is desired from the relationship .
This would be similar to a Master/slave relationship . There are many different people out there and many different wants and desires . What works for one is not what would work for another . Not all people desire the same thing from a relationship , so you must find the right relationship that works . Wether or not that is Vampyric , BDSM or "normal" .

Love is love, most ppl don't decide how they want to love someone...it just happens. So if A sire were to find an attraction to someone for there inherent traits and wish to see them improve those traits through a "turning" of sorts then it would be more of a parent/child relationship.

On the other hand if a Sire were to come across someone and they couldn't explain the way they felt about them and wished to "turn" them for a more intimate relationship...well then there ya go lol.

Vampires like humans, can love in alot of ways. Some of there choosing, others by chance, and some rare ones by fate.
