*I did a forum search first and could not find any result under the word "elemental"*
My question:
What is an elemental?
I have been doing tons of research on energy work, Reiki, Shamanism, Chi, alternative healing techniques, Human Energy Field, Kirlian Photography, Energy Feeding, etc.
I have come across this term a few times and I would like to get feedback from anyone out here in "VR-land" who might have knowledge of such things.
What is "an elemental"?
(Aside from the wikipedia definition of mythical celtic creatures that are also popular in Final Fantasy games.)
What does it mean when someone who works with energy is also further described as "an elemental" ??
Thanks for your help!
Mostly a Nature Spirit.
May be from any of the three worlds.
From angels, devas, fairies, subhuman or artificial.
You can also use elemental attributes for the four corners.
The four elements: earth, air, fire and water, all have energies and traits associated with them. As well as compass directions. In Celtic faith air is east, earth is north, south is fire, and west is water. An elemental can be a person who carries many traits associated with a specific element within them, or who works magic mainly in one particular area. It is said that everyone is associated with one element above the others. Mine is air. This also tends to get linked with what your animal spirit is as well.
I hope that was somewhat helpful.
YAY Billy! You are always so amazingly knowledgeable and helpful!
Yes, I understood "Elemental" to mean faerie, elf, nature spirit.
What does it mean when a human energy worker is described as an "elemental spirit." Where and how is the distinction made for healing energy work?
No doubt since I identify with the "pooka" the answer lies close to my heart, and is destined to help me along my path.
In some pagan teachings, the compass directions and their associated elements have guardians, who are to be the embodiement of the associated elements and the traits derived from them. Thus, the guardians are said to be elementals
Yes, Chaos... It has cleared it up quite a bit.
Does anyone have any links, books, information to help me find where I can study further?
there is a book called Elemental Magic...for the life of me I can't find my copy to tell you the author. I'm thinking maybe Scott Cunningham....but I'm not sure.
there is also a book called 'Druid Power: Celtic Faerie Craft & Elemental Magic' by Amber Wolfe
But I don't think you are looking for magick persay. I'm still looking up valid and solid information for you Pooka.
Hello I found your thread quite interesting and went searching for myself I found several links in hopes to help you out with your search and maybe get some answers.

I will come back to see if anyone has more information on this subject =)
I've always known Elementals to be spiritual beings that are, in a way, made of the energies of a certain element.
I am finding many sites I hope you don't mind here is another link this one is very interesting as they all have been. This is a very good thread
http://iasos.com/articles/3_kingdoms/
If you asking about human elementals, that would be implying to the person's archetype. Some of us are angelic, some from ascended masters but there are some that are elemental or that which are closer to the earth. These people are well grounded and mostly interested in the earth, animals, trees, etc. They are not very "newage" but they do have Higher interests. Many witches have this archetype within them.
You can also create an elemental by focusing only on one idea. You can then work from this.
This is what I meant by artifical.
Yes. Humans that are described as elementals. Exactly.
Going through all the links now....
Thank you!
Sorry, I think perhaps I should clear this up. If I am not mistaken, i think what Pooka is more so looking for information on people that control elements, aka elementals. Yes, I know the terminology might be a little confusing. Yes, everyone has a specific element assigned to them, usually by their birth month. And they are more proficient in using that element. But one isn't limited to controling other elements. I think that is what she wants to know more about. Controling elements.
Thank you DreamScars for adding to that. I think you might have a better idea than I do, since I'm just learning....
Glad you made this post...very interesting information that everyone has given! I have always felt more intuned with nature. I have always used it to get my energy or build up energy from within! I don't know much about it. This is just how I have always felt! Maybe I should look into this further! Thanks everyone for all the links & information!
Also in the sense of being a vampiric elemental there are those who feed off the energies of said major elements, the most prevelent is fire followed by water,in truth i have only ever come across one person tomy knowlege r that was this type and he fed from fire, although i cant priduce the facts on this type of feeding,im told they(elementals) make up only 2% of the community...Be Well
I believe they are spirits that are connected with Nature.
here's another good link,
http://www.altnature.com/thegarden/whatareelementals.htm
An Elemental (in my most humble opinion) is a being which contains the purest most untainted power of whichever elemental power it relates most closely to...
For example it is my belief that as a powerful being of the fire element, the Dragon is the elemental of this energy...
In the same way a Golem may represent the purest form of the Earth element... and so on...
But what do people think of the elements of Darkness and Light, Life and Death, Chaos and Order?
thou hast all defined the elementals, beings of purest element energy , known to many esoteric doctrines, some elementals of earth can include the faerie folk, the water element can include nymphs , and for darkness and light , well ,that is a tad complicated, each element I believe to have its 'dark' and 'light' side , same with chaos (which is erroneously believed to be the lack of order, coming from Greek, and meaning the primaeval nothingness, the abyss)
Chaos might have elementals, chaos being nothing and everything at the same time, and death and life, well, I do not know.
LM
I agree with LM. I think forces of Chaos or order or rather the random and the purpose are unrelated to elements. They are a seperate force.
HellsGuardian has the answer I thought I was looking for....
HellsGuardian - Why only 2% - What is different about these people? Why can't anyone else feed off of Fire or water, or lightning.
I seem to remember another fourm post a long time about about "do you get charged in a storm" and quite a few of the responses were, "YES"
Would these people be considered elementals?
An elementalist, is one that can manipulate the elements, ie spirit, water, fire, air and earth. Or atleast this is my perception of one.
In Asian Medicine there are 5 Elements.
Each one of these has both a yin and a yang channel that relates to it. With one exception: Fire has 4 channels that relate. They are found both in nature and in man. The idea is that we are nature therefore natures rules rule our bodies and balancing these elements and channels so that energy flows smoothly allows for the body to create it's optimal health. Each element controls another, nourishes another and can have it done so by another element.
How it explained in VERY SIMPLE terms is:
Wood: Trunk of the tree or bamboo, absorbs the water holds the earth: Green: Liver/Gallbladder
Fire: Branches of the tree, burns the wood, forms metal: Red: Heart/Small Intestine & Pericardium/SanJaio(Triple Burner)
Earth: Ground below, absorbs the water, holds metal: Yellow: Spleen/Stomach
Metal: Cuts the wood, holds water: White: Lung/Large Intestine
Water: Puts out the fire, and nourishes wood: Black/dark blue: Kidneys/Urinary Bladder.
sahahria -
Thank you for that information. I know that according to asian zodiac I am considered a WOOD Tiger, However, according to astrology I am a Fire sign. (Must be always consuming myself. LOL!) But that's a bit off subject.
I was asking what is different about a Human Person that is considered "An Elemental"
I have always taken the word elemental to be essentially the same word as 'basic'. Anything at all can be elemental. You have the classical elements (earth, fire, et all), that were originally intended to help break the cosmos down to their most basic components. The asian ones, which add wood and metal to the mix, were a further extrapolation of the basic parts of the universe.
Then, you have the modern religion, Science, and the massive periodic table of what?
Theeeeee elements!
And what is it's purpose? To break down all of reality into smaller, basic, easy to swallow chunks.
So really, when you want to work with the 'elements', all you really want to work with is the broken down forms of reality, specific parts, building blocks, if you will.
In order to properly work with said elements, all you have to do is reduce the concept to its lowest common denominator (science AND math!), and then, rebuild reality with the given material, as you see fit.
Hope that helped!
From my readings, I've found that In some pagan teachings, the compass directions and their associated elements have guardians, who are to be the embodiement of the associated elements and the traits derived from them. Thus, the guardians are said to be elementals
I have to give monk a hand. That was by far one of the most simplest and yet enlighting piece of information that I read. Thanks monk.
Elemantal are from an element and made for this element only to make one and both enlight us using it and protecting us with the help of it. SOme elemental makes links with the human world most of the time out of curiosity but also they atach themself to a particular being and forms a bond more stong then with the general humans who cross their path.
Becoming a guide and protector but also equip with a wrath that can seem cruel at times if they get deceive.
I found something BillytheJust posted in another thread, and thought it was very relevant and wanted to bring it in here....
"If you really wish to feel what it is like to feel energy and feed from it, take a walk in the woods during a light rain or mist. Then you will know yourself what I mean." - BillytheJust as posted in the CODEX thread.
There are those that describe themselves as PSY Vamps, and those that are more nature centered, relying on nature and the elements for their recharging.
Is it possible that "elemental" is just a name that PSY Vamps give to energy attuned people who do not feed on people, but would prefer to "recharge" by being around nature?
I think I have found the answer I was looking for in this thread - But I'd like to get feedback on it first....
Skylla - I'm glad I stepped forward with my question too, it seems many of us have similar questions! :) I'm glad we can all come together and figure it out!
Elements have been tied to the human form for decades, both chinese and western zodiac all having elements that coexist with there signs. Perhaps subconciously we are attuned to these elements. Taking it furter, to the mystical sense of it, are the background for almost every major religious story, though Christian sects tend to remove any power from the elements themselves. Within a Vampiric context, there are the two main classes, psi and sang, which both feed off what would be considered the element of spirit. Beyond that, people have tuned themselves to feed off the earth, the wind, the rain, etc, for many reasons. Human energy is not always available, nor is blood. Rather then starve, its nice to just walk into a storm.
I have found this site rather enlightening... may it help you in your journey.
http://www.greenhopeessences.com/Choosing/index.html
see pooka, you got a lot of information. It's nice to see that different minds coming together bringing information. Kind of like the internet, only, organic...on the internet, lol.
ITS MEEEEEEEEEE (smiles ok?) Pointing to her name.
I tend to gather my energy from water. I am a pisces. It is my element. I think the salamander is the the "critter" representing water.
If I need some recharging and solace...water is the ticket for me. From something as simple as a hot shower to going to the lake or beach and soaking in the atmosphere and peace.
So....in keeping with the thread...I gather energy from my element of water, thus I identify as an elemental.
Actually, to correct you elemental, salamander is the representation of fire, believe it or not.
as far as I know, it's undines. if you look it up anywhere on the internet too, that is what you will find.
well i dont know how one would go about becoming an elemental. as for me i was born one.
i was born a fire elemental. the day i was born as heat wave hit now that wouldnt be too odd if i wasnt born in march. also i dont feel heat at all. i barly sustain any damage frrom fire at all to be honest
So much in this thread gives us food for thought. Learned much reading this! I had only thought of elementals as in the 4 elements - and their counterparts and offshoots; had never considered humankind as part of them.
Would this help to understand how and why some gain energy, etc as the moon waxes to full? As to the element most associated with our zodiac sign? I'm a Sagittarius and I believe a fire sign - I hate heat!
I shall also enjoy perusing the various sites given in this thread - thanks to all!
This thread had me quite intrigued, so I decided to do some research & learn more about it! I found alot of interesting information & alot was given in the thread as well! Thanks for posting it, it was a great idea! I did post the infromation that I found & the links in my journal.
This thread has been very interesting and is sending most of us on a journey to learn more. My basic beliefs are Celtic and I feel that there are definitely many different cultural spins on the number of "elements". For me, I'm learning to tap the power of nature and have been most successful with drawing from strong weather changes. Storms are great but even a strong cold front that blows for days I found unexpected energy in.
Looking forward to the full moon tomorrow too. It's cycles as well as natural changes seem to peak my power.
Just beginning and learning though, does this make those like me "elemental"? or is that just reserved for the afore mentioned spiritual guardians?
I don't know but it is all very interesting.
I believe its an entity that is or works with the elements.
When I think of the word "Elemental," without looking it up or reading through all the post, I think of Alchemy. It seems like an alchemist that would work with all the "elements" available on this planet (ie: Sulfur, carbon, gold, etc.)
Elmental deals with the four corners acording to the pagan beliefs. Eather air fire water. The nature of life.
Elementals are creatures that embody one of the four elements.
After reading several posts here, I really do not know if the Elemental refers to the entities that embody elements or those who respond to them.
I think, also, it is important to pay special attention to the CONTEXT in which the term "elemental" is used (as is true with particularly any word). It, so often, depends on the group to which you're speaking or asking for a certain answer. Perspective, not to mention symantic usage, is key.
Any concept tends to become too convoluted when one tries to view all possible definitions/views at the same time.
An Advanced Elemental Can use All of the elements to there extent.
Some pagan teachings, the compass directions and their associated elements have guardians, who are the embodiement of the associated elements and the traits derived from them. Thus, the guardians are said to be elementals
So an elemental is like one of the captain planet team members... and they can control fire, water, wind, or heart?
I know that I respond to the phases of the moon (not a werewolf, vampire only lol)
Weather events and my familiars. (three cats one in particular)
I'm trying to explore my element (fire) but think that I might draw from others as well.
As most of us here, I'm learning.
I draw from a vast range of elements, it is not supprising you do more as well, ( there are many more than 5 elements, just the 5 are the most basic foundations)
an elemental is any of a number of beings that form the numbers of beings that are born into human bodies with non human souls, (the usage ahead of the word being/s will be used to refer to this)
what seperates elementals from the many other such beings is that elementals(actually that term is quite genaralising) are beings connected with the elements earth air water and fire
they comprise of the fae, elves, gnomes, dwarves, undines, sylphs, dryads to mention a few families of beings
being linked with the elements , they are the most grounded among the beings, and their energy is of light
centaurs are also beings whose energy is light, and cannot be rightly classified as elementals
dragons are the other family of beings whose energy is of light
among the dark energy beings are the angelic beings, the birds and the valkyries
elemental beings find their purpose more connected with material and grounded issues, their work is more related to the earth anf its direct welfare etc, they can be recognised as either fae, elves, gnomes, dryads through their faces and certain charecterstics of their energies , guides and general life purposes,likes/dislikes etc
the other beings also have their various functions and purposes and can be similarly recognised through traits and characterstics, but as the subject of the thread is related to elemental beings we will not delve into that
i hope this post is what the thread was seeking
pookahchu
if you wish to learn more online regarding elementals you may try using the word otherkin , along with combinations of that word with words like elemental, fae, undine, elf etc
otherkin will yeild many sites that will give you a wealth of resources regarding the matter,
it is all very nascent and a lot of it is guessed at and secondhand though it it a good place to begin
nature as they say will lead the rest of the way
good luck on your search
snark has it right
for info go search wiccan/pagan sites..usually there r many pieces of info there..plus a human with energy is NOT an elemental...please research before giving an opinion...if u dont know what u r talking about you will only confuse and mislead the questioner
elemental beings that arent in the human cycle, that have chosen to remain non corporeal , are perhaps the elemental that is being referred to when one speaks of faries and elves, these usually form the body of beings that are guides to their kin that have chosen to enter the human cycle, and through them to mankind and the planet
since these beings arent in the human cycle, they arent restricted by space time and causation and have a certain let us say advantage in causing manifestations, facilitating divination and such in the material plane, yet i have found in my experiences that they have their limitations too, mostly in terms of shortage of energies and such, many of the beings that guide and aid human in carnated elementals , who have gone of their path or are slacking off on their purpose, find themselves weakened and rendered powerless due to their wards going off track,(as they form symbiotic relationships with their human incarnated counterparts) till another human incarnated being is called or requested to aid to help bring said ward back on track and get the ball rolling so to speak, usually it is someone who has significant karma with said ward,so that the time for connection and introductory formalities are minimised.
and ofcourse on the practical note is geographically close or can facilitate said work throuigh other media, i have found that the internet is quite a feasible medium for all means of long distance energy work
this has been my experience with both elementals that exist non corporealy and those that have entered the human cycle
very intersted thread. i dont know if that question is already answered... but can a human be an elemantal?
can an elemantel controll plants?
genuineblood
not so much as control plants as communicate with them and the beings that look over/ inhabit them, if the elemental is a particularly advanced or evolved one, he/she can even learn many secrets , of the plant , mineral and animal world, that may be used for medicine healing etc
elemental sould incarnated as humans are in that sense humans, yet their energy readind is very different and distinctive, also as they evolve and become closer to their true form , their biology even becomes different
I have a question, if you don't mind. Could the lesser known like ice, air, storm, ect be considered?
I believe that an elemental is one that can draw energy from storms or changes in the weather.. that can tap into the earths energy level.
Do you have a copy of Voudon's Gnostic Workbook? It's an invaluable piece of research for your library.
after reading this entire thread i am still clueless, i do kinda understand about humans feeding off of elements which i think is more conceiveable than feeding from other humans
I think I can remember the names for the elementals for the elements or Fire ,Air, Water and Earth.
Fire = Salamanders
Air= Slyphs
Water= Undines
Earth= Gnomes
If I got them in the wrong order I apologise. It's been a while since i looked at it. it is true that they are assigned different points of the compass and I think also different Astrological signs too.
OK, The trouble is, this thread is acutally running aft of three different subjects at the same time.
When I posted the topic, I was more interested in the idea that HUMANS could have elemental properties, and perhaps collect energy from Fire, the ocean, a storm; or perhaps hold off a storm, help increase the potency of a fire when needed, or perhaps help make sure a ship gets into bay safely.
I know it is too late. Not many will read this far down, but perhaps we can just discuss the plausibility of the "elemental" in the human form?
I would have to agree with Chaoshawk's assessment of this term. I know that as far as elements are concerned I am more prone to Water. It seems that in one way or another I am always connected to it and guided by it.
Being Pagan, I was always under the impression that an Elemental was something to do with the four corners or the elements..on the other hand-
As I did research on this topic I found information that has brought me to beleive otherwise. I cannot say this information is true or completely credible, knowing as it was from the internet. What I researched said that an elemental is an entity that manifests itself into our plane thru means of a portal or rip created with something to contact spirits-for ex. ouija board..They feed off of the energy on the people using the board and then once it has maintained itself in our plane sumwhat it can continue to disrupt our lives for the fact that it feeds off of our fear and energy..It seemed to sound like a possibility..but as I said do not take this as necessarily fact but maybe more unconventional insight. Hope this helped you.
I've always thought of Elementals (in this context) as those who draw energy from and have an affinity with certain elements. The draw power from them, and use this power (most often) to direct them. In myths and history they seem pretty common, showing up as witches and wizards in European stories, or medicine men and wise women in Native and Aboriginal stories. They bring rain, divert storms, make fires from wet wood, that kind of thing. And generally, they only have one or two elements at which they are particularly strong. Furthermore, they can not actually 'control' them, only direct them, and only to a certain extent. You still see people today who claim to be able to do these things, but I've never seen it personally.
pooka, sorry i'm comming into this so late. some are correct the confusion comes from the fact that elemental is a spirit asociated or born of an element; as well as, a person who is closely tied to or can control elemental forces and/or spirits.
as for human elementals. i myself am an air/water elemental. thou most elemental ties are bassed on birth signs. i am a libra which is an air sign, and a white rabit which is an air/metal sign. however, my strongest element is water. more strongly is combining the to when dealing with weather. on the other hand, i have no problems getting pretty much anything to burn. basically, do not limit yourself based on your birth signs. one must spend time meditating and working with each element before deciding what you are strongest with or how you can work with them.
using elementalism in healing is another matter. once you feel comfertable working with elements and healing seperatly, then and only then should you begin to figure how best YOU can combine them. always remember, energy workings wether healing, elemental or spiritual are always very personal. what works for one will not always work for another.
I also belive in the thought of elementals are beings who are intune with there element such a water fire wind and earth, also the forgotten elements which very few people recognize are light and dark.
light and dark a far from being elements. they are more like qualifiers or inhencers to the bass element. much like piant. to get shades (darker) and hues (lighter) you add black or white respectively. however, you still need the bass color.
I would definitely have to say I am more connected to the element earth.
This is a very interesting subject. I will have to read about it a lil more:)
I believe an elemental is someone who get there powers from the elements of the earth.
the only element that it seems like you are partially missing out on is soul/void A.E.F.W all seem more tangible i suppose, but some of the older/more ancient ideologies deal extensively w/ the element of void or soul (however you want to interpret).. i would say it is as powerful or more so than the others..
D
i found this bit here:
the primitive non-human and non-material entity of the nature of one of the Four Elements; also, an artificial elemental is a thoughtform, whether created consciously by thought and will, or unconsciously by strong emotions, which develops a separate existence; that separate existence can be temporary, or - as in the case of the godforms, created by the devotion of the worshippers and ensouled by the Divine Force thus venerated through prayer and invocation - can become permanent and ...
heres the site for it:
www.ravenquest.net/WyldeWoods/e.html
In mysticism, mythology and alchemy, an elemental is a creature (usually a spirit) that is attuned with, or composed of, one of the classical elements: air, earth, fire and water. The elements balance each other out through opposites: water quenches fire, fire boils water, earth contains air, air erodes earth. The concept of elementals seems to have been conceived by Paracelsus in the 16th century. Paracelsus' elementals were: Antroposophy is also known to have knowledge of elementals.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elemental
Elementals are evil spirits that are not to be fooled around with...i have had a few rounds with one.. they can be very dangerous.
An Elemental is one that can tap into the energies of the earth.. And do things like draw energy from storms and serious changes in the weather.
I have lived in Morocco for 2 years in Sidi Ifni, if it is humans who control the elements what you are looking for then yes they do exist, but no they would never come forth. I think the reason why I was lead out at gunpoint from the area was because I was not supposed to be there in the first place. I would also think that they have a keen psyche and know if you pose a threat or not. The argument that ensued between the individual and I would suppose his protector ended with the individual telling me in clear english to leave and forget.
Well I left but I never forgot and I realised that even if you told someone they wouldn't believe you anyway, so I never really commented on it in life and that was in the late 70's.
depending on what type of elemental u are referring to. if u are reffering to the powers of the four corners well yes they are right. but if u r talking bout spirits that inhabit a house or something of that nature well then yes they are evil and they are not to be fooled with.
WELL, THIS IS JUST AN OPINION...
THERE ARE FIVE ANCIENT ALCHEMICAL SYMBOLS, EARTH, AIR FIRE, WATER... A CREATURE WHO REPRESENTS ONE OF THOSE SYMBOLS ARE AN ELEMENTAL...
FOR EXAMPLE, AN EARTHBOUND CREATURE LIKE VAMPIRES ARE OF THE EARTH ELEMENT; MERMAIDS ARE OF THE WATER ELEMENTS, SANTELMOS (OR FIRE BALLS) ARE OF THE FIRE ELEMTS...ETC
I always thought an elemental was a mage who could controll the elements
It depends on the culture in how they refer to Elementals...but they are nature spirits. The use of Elemental to name something just means someone in some way that works with elements. That word can be used in many ways but generally when most say Elementals they mean Earth, Air , Fire and Water and those entities generally related to them by culture. Many do work with elementals in magick but I have never heard of a mage being referred to as an Elemental. I suppose one could if they did all their magick with the aid of these creatures then an Elemental magickian or I am aware of the use of lightning and things like that for magick as I am writing an article about magick used with Tesla coils and/or lightning...I personally have never heard that moniker previously.
i have always believed that an elemental is one born of the elements and imbibed with the raw power of the element they associate with
I thought there was five elements, the other one being metal.and looking at the fact that we have the element in our blood, being iron, potassium, zinc, even copper.I could be wrong. But i,m pretty sure i,m correct.
it is interesting to see all the diff views of exactly what Elemental really is....
