In many movies and books, vampires are referred to as "damned souls." Seeing as vampires must survive in generally the same way as any other being, why should they be damned? What exactly makes them damned? And why is it that a vampires soul should or should not be damned?

I'm sure it's probably a christian/religious thing.. since they view the undead as being souless, the soul had to go somewhere, and since the vampire is also viewed as evil, it's assumed the soul was damned to hell.
I think it's because the soul is meant to leave the body at the time of death and with a vampyre soul it doesn't. therefore the soul can't cross over to wherever the religion says it should and is damned to walk the earth until the true death of the vampyre spirit...or something like that anyway
L x
Vampires are damned souls because...well to paraphrase Ann Rice, they wander the earth trapped, no heaven or hell, no God to speak of. They live to feed on the blood of the living and by doing so kill thier prey. They can not eat or drink, or enjoy the wordly things of the living. Thier bodies are cold, thier skin thin and they are trapped in the shadows of the night. Ann Rice makes her characters a bit more human, Lestat for example will feel and show emotion. He will face dilemna and feel love.
The more traditional vamp is a feeding machine that has no emotion and it's only mechanism is one of survival.
Way too many theories exist on this topic to accurately comment without some disagreement.
Imagine being immortal and watching everyone around you eventually die. No fun.
I must agree with Tego for they are but a walking corpse left to to this earth sorta like a limbo since they can't go to either heaven nor hell
i read many good and true things. we are not corpses though. we live and breath and are undead. the statement was made about being immortal and being forced to watch those around us die. that is the hardest of them all. i have lived a very very long time and in that time have seen those very close to me die and i wish that i could go with them. our soul still breaths within us but to die as a vampyre is ten times the pain a mortal goes through. we are torn between two things. living is nice it is a great thing. to love and be loved back is the greatest thing any mortal or immortal can feel. after we die that feeling leaves us. but to live for so long is horrible and i wish it would end. i wish to see my loved again. it is so difficult to awaken everyday and relive all that have already happen. to say we are damned souls is and understatement.
How does anyone know they have a soul. What does a soul do. What makes one think they have one???
Damned or not..In the eyes of some aren't we all damned.
Vampires are not Damned for what they are... They sometimes become damned for what they do: just as humans. Immortality is something beautiful. To keep it that way you just don't have to taint it: it's not about God or religion... it's about the light inside each soul, like Vittorio said once :)
Vampires are not damned at all they're just not seen as human there for humans see them as damned.
Vampires are damned souls in the religious context of their mythology. The Christian religion is pretty firm in biblical texts about consuming blood. So right there, a Christian that believes in the bible as law faces a pretty steep obstacle to 'salvation' if they're also a vampire.
Second, one must remember that many early myths and fictions on the vampire put the catholic church or it's excommunication as cause of vampirism...so the soul was damned and then became a vampire...still damned.
There are also modern takes on the idea that if you cannot die, than your soul is lost...for what kind of access could your soul be granted while still trapped in it's body.
None of this would apply to a modern vampire except for the most obvious...a Christian Sanguinarian is still faced with consuming blood as being a biblical no no.
I would say, in the religious context, that attaining physical immortality is an affront to God.
On a more existential idea, it could be that reincarnation, whilst retaining past memories and personality, is also a defiance of the return to the whole, the one-ness of the universal energy being that could also be ascribed to be God.
Also, with the way in which vampyric feeding occurs, it is often invasive.
In the psuedo-Christian system of belief, these are three prime reasons to become 'damned'.
As an aside, it does seem apparent that the concept of the vampire being a damned soul, likely comes from the literature of the mainly European oriented, moralised societal framework.
Outside of this, it could be said that it is not so much damned by God, as to have chosen exclusion. Maybe 'self-damnation' would be appropriate.
I’d have to say its predominately a religious thing, with vampires being considered evil, and the living dead. Not quite damned to hell but damned to walk this Earth as a creature of the night. The idea of death being so hard to inflict upon a vampire has a sense of immortality, where as with Christians death is embraced threw the ideals of Heaven.
Also vampires are damned to feed off of others, and only able to walk during the night. With the having to live off of another and not being able to experience daylight I would consider that damnation.
They are suppose to be damned because of their actions, and the were suppose to be cursed to walk in the night and not be graced with the presence of the sun which was suppose to be a gift from god.
That's an interesting approach to it Stabb. The idea that everything must die and therefore immortality is an affront to nature aka God. I like the way that crosses beyond the normal religious perspective.
It's true as far as we know. But our scope of existence is limited to what we've seen in our small little section of the universe. Perhaps immortality is natural on some plane or in some world.
Vampires are considered dammed because they exist in a state of limbo. Never being fully dead, never being fully alive.
I just read what Stabb said, and it's basically what I was trying to say only way more articulated. :)
Since 'damned' is, by it's original definition, a religious term meaning condemned to eternal punishment in hell, I'm going to view this as a religious question.
1. Immortality is an affront to God. In the garden of Eden were 2 trees, the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, and the Tree of Immortality. Adam and Eve were not allowed to eat from either. They were kicked out for disobedience and so that they could not eat from the other tree and become like gods themselves.
2. The Bible is pretty clear on blood drinking. It's bad. It is, without doubt, a form of cannibalism. (Not actual cannibalism, but similar.) The fact that vampires often (if not always) kill the victim as well, only makes it worse. We all know that murder is a sin. Even if you're really hungry.
3. Although I'm not sure about the Bible's views on this, vampires are walking corpses. They are dead people that for some reason, are still moving around. The soul is still inside. The body is moving. The person is dead. I cannot stress that enough. Undead is a term we made up. It means no longer alive, but animated by a supernatural force. (www.dictionary.com)
4. Historically, vampires could come from a lot of things, not just being bitten. Most of these things involved being 'evil' in life. Witches, murderers, heathens, blasphemers, werewolves, and the unbaptised were all thought to come back as vampires. Also, people who were 'cursed' from birth, such as redheads, the deformed, those born with a caul, breech babies, and seventh sons of seventh sons (thought to be unlucky).
5. When a vampire dies (for good, this time), their soul gets a one way ticket to the flaming bowels of Hell. Their damnation begins then. Not on Earth, in Hell. Getting a bit lonely and not being able to go to the beach and get a tan are not damnation. That just kind of sucks. Christian damnation is a bit worse. Flames, sulphur, and ass forkings for the rest of eternity sounds rather more unpleasant.
These are the reasons that vampires are damned souls. These reasons, and the idea of damnation are religious in nature. If you do not hold with this religion, disregard this completely except as an interesting piece of information that has nothing to do with you.
one is damned when one is beleiving he or she is, since who may or even can decid what is holly and what is damned? No one can really, we may pretend but no one can really we may think we can or even try to but its all in th eyes of the one who juge or decid actually no on can really know or make the call
Jakyna, if there is a god or higher being in charge of the universe, it doesn't matter if you believe in it or not. If it wants to damn you, you're damned.
Felix,
Indeed, this is quite the likely possibility.
In an infinite universe, at least.
A reason why, at the end, I'd say that vampyrism ought to be taken out of the religious context and placed into a more general metaphysical examination.
Perhaps it is that a vampyre energy being chooses to remove itself from the rest of the universal energy structure, causing a seperation from 'God' and therefore, being damned in the sense of not being able to have intercourse with God ever again?
There are many reasons why movie vampires are damned....we ARE talking about movie vamps not real ones correct??
1. to many, living forever is a curse
2. not having the freedom to go out when you please (sunlight)
the list goes on
i'm going to have to agree with lizsara on the idea of the trapped souls damned to walk the earth. however, 'damned' is strictly a judeo-christian concept.
Its only the close minded christians that think like that
Thats what I'm saying, but moving past that, can it not be seen as an analogy for the vampyric state anyway?
DarkPharaoh, it's not a question of close mindedness in Christians. What the Book says, goes. It's rather rude to bash a religion that you know nothing about. You don't have to believe in something, but try to be respectful of other people and their beliefs. The word 'damned' has a religious context. Not just a Christian one, but that's the only one I have knowledge of, so I explained the standard reasons for that term being used in reference to vampires. That doesn't mean anyone has to believe it. Also, I was under the impression that we were talking about the mythical kind of vampire that is undead, immortal, and drinks the blood of the living. As for psy-vamps, I'm not sure anyone has ever called them damned.
Yes, I really don't see it as only a christian term...
it fits with movie vamps perfectly, damned can mean a multitude of things, or just one, depends on how you look at it. Why do we care whether or not movie vamps are damned?? come on
I also believe that it though they are "trapped" on earth without release...it depends on how they spend that eternity wether in the end they shall be damned or not...because eventually they do die by being killed or chosing to go into the sun...so perhaps then when after however decades of immortality they meet the end...would they not be judged then? Like we supposedly all are? Should they be damn for all eternity for feeding off humans when that is their only means of surviving...I mean technically we kill things so we can eat are we then all damned for killing another creatures without (most of the time) remorse for our actions...we don't see them as having a soul because they are lessor creatures (cows, pigs, etc...) and is it not true humans are considered lessor creatures to vampires...weak and of course the whole short life thing....?
yes, that is the way it is portrayed in the movies, humans are livestock (seeing as though in movies humans and vamps are two completely different beings)
but the vampires are dependant on humans and humans alone, where as humans have many food sources.....so who is really the vulnerable one?
You are damned if that's what you'd like to think. Personally, I say, you make life what you can, you are the deciding factor. If you think you're damned, then you are, it's psychological. If you don't believe you are, then you aren't. It's like with religion. Are you going to Heaven or Hell? That depends on if you sin. If you sin a lot (and like doing so), then you've just earned yourself a clear ticket to eternal flames :) But in you live a good life and are firm about your morals and do what's "right", well then, God can't deny you access to Paradise. Lifes what you make of it, do with it as you please, but don't think so much into what you do, just do what comes natural and you're all good. Even if you're doing bad and dream of Heaven, there's always repentance. Jesus died for our sins, right? So why wouldn't our 'sins' be erased like an etchscetch? Just shake it a bit and you're cleared. Murderers who confess their sins in church are forgiven afterall.
And who ever said Vampires don't have souls? How can someone survive without one? They are what make you you. Someone who is soulless would be an empty husk and I don't know any Vampires who are like that. Besides, who says there's anybody out there looking out for us (or rather, down at us)? Not saying I believe either way, just you should believe what you want to believe, not what people tell you. It's better for your self being.
Some might argue that damnation is not a choice.
who chooses to be damned?
vampires are not damned...
It's all based by christian religion and their believes... Aren't everything which is unknown and not based on bible damned and forbidden? For me only beings which are damned are ghosts because they are doomed for everlasting wandering on earth not knowing their own death...
But vampires, on contrary they not damned because they have a knowledge of what they are and who they are, the most beautifull creatures which are more powerfull then human beings and there for they are thought as to be the damned
We are talking about movies, and yes, in the movies they are.
The only way a soul is "damned" is if you have christian beliefs..There is no such thing as hell. It was and is a trick to get mindless human sheep to give money and power to the church. Fear is a powerful motivater and if you cant think for yourself and need to rely on pedophiles to tell you what the "truth" is, you are already in the hell of your own making.
There is no need to bash religion. And what if "damned" is used merely for dramatic or even symbolic purposes?
everyone keeps talking as if we are talking about REAL people here, if that is what you think you need to re read the thread.
to be damned means ones fate is decided for the worst, this represents a MOVIE vampire.
Quite right Antieveryone, talking about the movies Vampires are damned. Even the movies differ on their thoughts. With the Blade idea, he is the only "good" vampire out to rid society of the remaining "scourge". The Underworld idea was quite different. The redemption idea was in the mixture of werewolf and vampire.
Aside from Hollywood's fascination, damnation would clearly come from a Christian of separation from God never redeemable.
hmm ok, lets not say damned, but perhaps one can use "condemned" or "cursed"
those are not christian, does that make it better?
Any souls of any tribes who violated cosmical laws, their tribe's laws become prisoner with lesson of karma.
Yeah, it's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Vampires have eternal souls, just like everyone else. It's what we choose to do with it that makes us different. And because "different" is seen as abnormal, we are therefore damned. Whatever.
I never considered any souls as damned persay....they are more of a reincarnated nature.....

"In many movies and books, vampires are referred to as "damned souls." Seeing as vampires must survive in generally the same way as any other being, why should they be damned? What exactly makes them damned? And why is it that a vampires soul should or should not be damned? "
Books and movies are created by someone with a pre-conceived notion of what a Vampire is, not to be confused with Vampyre.
The have to base the story or character on some existing literature or lore.
If you are saying they must survive in a similar fashion as any other being, by say feeding, using energy and restoring used energy, I'll agree with that on some level be it sang or psy.
Again this is left to the author's own imagination. In an Interview with a Vampire Ann Rice (sorry to keep going here) portrays vampires as needing "blood" to survive, not specifically human blood, feeding from rats and livestock. Again in another Hollywood creation Underworld I & II you see the use of synthetic blood and feeding on horses, etc. Humans in some way sustain life in a similar fashion if you will, by eating the flesh of other beings in the form of animals.
So is drinking the blood of another human in some way making a mockery of the "take, drink for this is my body" part of Christian sacrement of Communion? Again...back to Christianity and religion to spark the whole controversy.
Forgive me for rambling here but this got the gears turning.
well many people do believe that Jesus was a vampire, since he would like you to drink of his blood and so on...but what is the real truth? No on will ever know since the logs have been lost throughout time and changed with each revision.
haha, that's funny, I never imagined someone would come out and say "Jesus is a vampire", but you have at point there. Jesus's vampirism would be his religion :) That would make Jesus a Master Sire King Vampire, or whatever. He has so many children across the world, and he does indeed say to drink of his blood (pretty creepy). That would make all his little Christian followers his spawn. But he represents purity of the soul, no sins would go unforgiven, so how would that make someone damned? Something to think about...
very good analogy of what I was trying to explain...thanks for helping me out there...
i think some said it already..... that a vampire in the books and such fictional are damned because they have to walk the earth forever never being allowed to die..... and feeding of off human blood.......hat there soals may not leave and go were ever it is we go when we die........
actualy the christian faith would be canabalistic not just vamperic as they are ast to drink the blood AND eat the body of christ.
as for "damned" the judeo-christians faiths are the only ones that have that perticular consept of damned. most books and movies about vampires come from judeo-christian based culture. it only makes sence they would use the termanology and concept they were raised with
Vampires cannot help what they are. Whether you're talking about the fictional ones of literature, the ones we have media-atized, or the ones who just follow that life-style (to them it's just natural). You cannot label someone damned. They may do evil deeds or whatnot, but they are not evil incarnate. People say they are not very human in their ways. What makes them different? They drink blood to survive. They are like animals and humans alike, you need some sort of nourishment to continue living, you cannot just 'exist', unless you're inanimate (only exception). Humans eat plants and animals, is that damnable?
Or is this all simply in the mind?

I think by definition of the word "damned," we should have a good idea about what the statement means.
1 : to condemn to a punishment or fate; especially : to condemn to hell
2 a : to condemn vigorously and often irascibly for some real or fancied fault or defect
so, are their souls cursed at for being flawed? I don't think so.... more to the point, their souls are condemned to a fate, most likely, by the source of the term, their viewed as condemned to hell.
Seems like the most logical answer...
I agree with everyone on this... but may I put my own input in here... I don't believe we are damned at all... if you don't believe in context of what others say about being damned .. you have to believe in it to be damned lol
Anyone who believes that Jesus was a vampire, is an imbecile, for interperating the Bible literally.
Jesus is the total anti-thesis of the biblical beings which are often ascribed as the original vampires- The Nephilim.
heh, I didn't mean to say I thought of Jesus as a vampire, just that it was a funny idea. I myself believe that vampires are descendants of Nephilim. (Has anyone read a book called Blue Bloods?)
I have to agree with Birra on this one. No one really knows if the vampire is "damned", not really. Most people don't even believe we exists, so how can they call vampyres "the damned"?
VampiressNatalia,
By the understanding of the universe received through a religious leaning education system, people will see the world from that point of view, within which, the concept of a vampire is as a 'damned soul', which then becomes generally accepted, be it fiction or not.
If enough people believe in something, it will become 'real'.
I definitely agree with u.
I just stated that because there are people out here who want to say that vampires are demonic creatures and belong in hell. Hollywood puts them in movies as evil and unkind demonic beings roaming the earth ready to kill the good and innocent. That doesn't make sense to me. And on top of that we only had a few movies put out there that are supposed to display the "vampire's" point of view, which most of the time is not the whole truth. We rarely get recognized as having feelings and emotions like other human beings. We feel too, and we are not all damned. Unless u have done something to put you in that position.
This is because the vampire makes a really good and very sellable, 'bad guy'.
definitely.lol
Those bastards are making a mockery of us.lol
So, really, vampires are damned if they do, damned if they don't...
lol
hmm. Someday Vampires will have their own movie industry and they can do to humans what humans have done to them. Hopeful thinking... :)
Ok, kids remember that this discussion is not about people who identify themselves as vampires, it's about the ones in the movies and books who died, came back, and started killing people. It is not meant to offend anyone here, but to discuss the perception of these fictional characters as being 'damned'. And please, try to keep the religious bashing to a minimum. It has no place here, regardless of the religion in question.
hmm. You have a point there. I do believe that when someone becomes a Vampire, their soul is prevented from moving on because their physical body cannot die. Vampires are immortal, I don't believe a stake through the heart will kill them, or any other method presented for that reason. I think humans invented these methods to make them feel like they are actually doing something, yet in reality, they aren't doing anything accept denying the truth. Even if a Vampires body is damaged, I do not think they would die from it, they would simply "be" until some lucky chance comes along that brings them back. I get this idea from the movie Dracula II: Ascension.
Vampires are referred to as damned souls because it is believed by many of the book and movie writers that vampires are in some way the children of the fallen angel Lucifer. Or, that in some way these individuals were cursed to spend eternity on Earth as nocturnal creatures by God because of their actions in life.
I do not agree with this limited perspective on the subject.
Vampire children (those who are born Vampire, not turned) are the descendents of Fallen Angels, not restricted to just Lucifer, though. Only God would label them as 'damned'.
Though the origin, and even the definition of the word has religious roots, it can be interpreted and contorted into simply meaning "a condemned existence"hell just like the meaning of vampire, any word can be fucked with. The word "damned" adds greatly to the drama factor, and that is what entertainment is about....whether or not you all wanna huff and puff about the words origin.
a GREAT deal of phrases and terms come from the bible that we use today.
You're very right, AntiEveryone, words can be contorted. And it does make for good media :)
I think people are looking too into the interpretation of the word and not in what it really implies (though some have touched up on this fact).
This is very true, I do believe.
why is it that we refuse to accept the dictionary's only meaning of vampire, as the only right one?? because we made changes. The same can be said for any word, in the end words are butchered, and the damnation itself is not important, but what it stands for can mean so much more. It sets the entire mood of the story being told.
We are simply arguing over meanings of words in the end and where they came from, and it doesn't really matter either way.
To be damned would be possible even for someone who rejects God. The vampire of novel and the human of reality exist within dichotomy.
To choose against what your body wants in favor of the soul...to do what is right as opposed to what feels good. The vampire of novel fleshes out that scenario for us, often choosing hedonistically at the cost of his redemption.
to be damned means to be trapped between this world and the next world...to lenger on staying as you are. based upon this i can see where they save the vampire is damned. They continue to live on and linger. They watch as others pass on to the next life but they are trapped in their own world with nothing changing about them.
i dont think that any thing but us cad diside that fate.
Yes, but we're all getting on about how we interpret the word and what it means to us. Those who do not believe in what it implies based on the dictonary definition merely see it as meaning something else. It would be impossible for everyone to interpret the same word the same way. Some do not agree with it, while others do not understand it, and some see the flaws of it.
Well with this question comes the acceptance of premises that I will not blindly assume.
Just because inmovies or novels, vampires are said to have damned souls, that does not make it so. Are we suggesting this is a community full of the damned because some of us here drink blood or feed off of energy? I think not.
Wow... it seems I opened a can of worms... really sorry about that...
I left this thread so open because I wanted to see how everyone interpreted it, and all the different points of views on the subject. And yes, while vampires of movies and novels are damned by the writer that created them, the community here is most definitely not damned (thats my belief, anyway). So thanks everyone for being so thorough with this thread, and for shedding light on all the different ways it can be interpreted. I think even I myself have a new definition of the term damned now... lol
The term "damned" connotes to be beyond redemption. Thus, to believe in damnation, one must first believe in the principle of redemption by a third party (e.g., salvation through/by God or Jesus). Thus, if the belief in such third-party redemption is false, then so also is the concept of damnation.
"I have never seen a vision, nor learned a secret that would damn or save my soul." - Armand (Interview with the Vampire)
I belive a vampire is not damned for I wish to only walk in the nights sky, for it is the most bountiful time of the day, the sun just sheds light on those who want it, some of us fear and loath the light of which is the sun.
not to be the devils advocate, but just because we dont believe ourselves to be damned, doesnt mean that we are not....
Are you saying that though you reject that you are damned, you also accept it? Like you really have no choice?
i personally think this is a christian belief, vampires are no different feeding on the blood of humans than a lion feasting upon the flesh of a zebra to survive. and you don't hear anyone calling lions "damned souls"
"Damned"means the vampyres soul is lost, and among those in Hell. When the vampyre was made, the body continued as a blood sucking dead boy, or girl. The soul was lost to eternally waste among those who will never be redeemed i.e. the damned.
I have read in some of the old horror books, that vampires are demons and damned because they have no soul and kill each night to survive.
In real life, I know some of us feel that way, and just speaking for myself here. That we damned as our life seemed doomed to be forever alone. And is so hard to find of one of my own kind, be it either sang or psi or both..to really find the real deal to share my life with, my fears, my weakness, my strengths,my life.
So many are lifestylers who simply play the part on the weekends, role players who can't find reality outside of a pc game.Or just coo-coo's who think they really are Dracula*rolls eyes* Oh yeah, get alot of those kinds.
Damned perhaps , to feel as if I am not good enough to be around others. Are we damned ,even though we don't kill each night to survive. We still have needs we are different from what everyone thinks should be normal. They say vampires may be fallen angels, this I doubt, as no heavenly angel has smiled in my direction.
Damned..maybe,cursed perhaps,passionate and full of life..most diffinately..loved..fiercely!
I wasn't in any way suggesting that Jesus was a vampire. I'm not sure exactley where I was going with that comment, but that wasn't it.
i am merely saying that if we are damned or not, how exactly do we know?
Any creature, for lack of a better word, can choose different paths in life. Everything is a choice, therefore wouldn't one really choose if they are in fact damned by making the concious decision to take action in whatever way they themselves deem to be correct?
I understand what sky is trying to say, but I don't get why hollywood would classify being "damned" as being a demon on their way to hell. Like vampires are awaiting someone to send them. If I had to refer to myself I would say that I don't really feel that i am damned. I used to in a lot of ways but the feeling has changed. I am older and at a different point of my life. I have advanced in my knowledge of myself and know that my choices in life will determine how my soul will end up. I can't deny what I am, but I can make the choice to decide how I handle myself.
we are dealing with more of theology than anything else with the concept of damnation, and that is unprovable by any scientific means.
FortunateFool, that is presicely why I think that Hollywood has got it wrong. Damnation is a choice is everything.
One of the popular views of the 'vampire' in film and mass literature shows power, glamour, seduction, wealth, immortality - where is the catch? ok so they outlive others, can't walk in the sunlight but thats not enough to generate any feeling other than 'you lucky s.o.b'.
What would make an audience empathize with them? well lets give them that catch, they're 'damned'. Even ignoring the religious implications of that, it's enough for the common weal to know that in the rose that is vampirism there is a sharp thorn that none can avoid.
I don't think we are damned it was just a christian belife that we where evil
I think that if I my soul was so called "damned" it would be for alot more then just being vampire, since I am also homosexual and have been out for sometime now.
I dont see how something as beauitful as a vampire could be classed a damned soul
I was always under the impression, that Dracula, as one of the earliest known vmapires, as a man rejected God, and therefore damned himself eternally...opinions vary, but reject God, you give up your shot at heaven, therefore you are considered damned...
perhaps it is a mtter of perfection, and if only God can make something perfect, and vampires have rejected God so to speak, that would certainly give rise to the credence that vampires are damned...
there again as several have said, it depends on what personal beliefs you were raised with.
Its about taking lives and also wasn't vampirism generally seen as a curse, cast out of Gods graces, cursed to walk the earth alone etc etc;
I am one of those who has done his homework on this. Who's to say we are DAMNED ? Just because our D.N.A holds the v5 gene . Dose not mean we are to say dead ! Or in a limbo State, We are of a differant race than humans . I my self dont whorship there God . Nor do I belive we are evil. We feed to survive just like tigers to there prey and just like them we enjoy to chase.
an undead soul is always been refferd as damned, in each relegion that had 1 good god and 1 evil the undead where unholy creatures punished by the "good" god to atone for there sins
they were doomed creatures, so they say
and sins they where rejected by the good god they made a pact with the devil like the dracula story (thats what ppl say) to wander the earth as a damned soul or cursed creature.
thats the religous side of the story
The Dead Un-Dead was one of Stoker's original titles for Dracula, and up until a few weeks before publication, the manuscript was titled simply The Un-Dead. The name of Stoker's count was originally going to be Count Vampyre, but while doing research, Stoker ran across an intriguing word in the Romanian language: "Dracul", meaning "Devil". There was also a historic figure known as Vlad the Impaler, but whether Stoker based his character on him remains debated and is now considered unlikely.
i dont see why they should be. unless they are of hell which they may be i think there half demons!
