Ouija Boards

What are some of your Experiences with them?

What do you think they were intended for?

Why do you think some regard them as Dangerous?

Ok, not one of my more thought-out Posts, but just the same: Observe proper English. And if you are going to post, spell "Ouija" right. :P

1. My experiences with O-U-I-J-A boards (:P) are boring. Nothing happened. Well, the lil thingy (planchette) moved, but I just think it was my friend trying to scare me. I can't even remember what we asked, but it was just stupid. I wasn't into it because I knew she was messing with me. I've only tried to use a Ouija board twice and both times...nothing.

2. I don't think they were intended for anything sinister. I think they were just board games created to encourage people to use their imaginations and spook themselves.

3. Some regard them as dangerous only because they think it's that easy to open a 'portal'. Personally I think it would take more than a piece of wood to entice a spirit into this world--allowing that it could even be done at all. Again, I think it's just the wonderful imagination at work. :D

On a side note, all this is in reference to the game board sold by Parker Brothers. I believe in the use of talking boards or other devices to communicate with spirits if they are used in the proper manner and by someone experienced.

My experience has been nothing, I won't go near them.

I know that people use them to creep each other out, but the founding idea (giving te general public a believed means to contact the dead) is one that bothers me.

I think that ouija boards are dangerous because I believe in the idea of a soul and that they can be contacted. Just as a person's soul can be good, it can also be evil, and I do not wish to try to contact wherever it is that they exist, even through supposed means like a ouija board. I find the conecpt quite terrifying because I cannot control what kind of soul would respond or if it is responding in jest or truth.

Once and only once did something happen, but it was not during the use... it was after the fact. A mysterious being placed itself in my friends apartment and began to mess with things, even the computer that was unplugged. It in all honesty could have just been sheer coincidence that we so happen to have been playing with the Ouija board the night before... :)

Foreverseeking, if you look, its yes in french and german.

Many of my experiences have been very uneventful, but a few have been a bit creepy. One predicted us getting n important letter, and another a knife on a stand "jumped" off the middle of a shelf. I think tht was the most disconcerting one.

I think they were originally intended for spirit communitcation, but I now think they are a device for marketing, and are in fact a cliche in themselves. I think it is much more linked to the mind, and the impulses that make us slowly move the planchette without even realising it.

From my experience, I was frightened, and put off Ouija boards for a while, but I am still rather sceptical. I think anyone who tries to communicate with spirits is aware that that could be as dangerous as it is rewarding, and hence the mystery and danger surrounding them.

I tend to stay away from them after hearing about an experience several family members had with one. They asked where it got its power from, and it spelled out Beelzebub. It was subsequently burned.

1. My experiences with Ouija boards were really nothing but me trying to freak someone out, other than that nothing has ever really happened.
2. I think Ouija boards were for conjuring spirits from beyond but later weren't taken seriously because one or the other of the people could be moving the thing, and in most cases were.
3. I guess they could be dangerous if they worked because were not really supposed to have contact with the dead or anything other than ourselves.

Foreverseeking, let me break it down for you. Oui is French for yes. Ja is German for yes. Oui-ja....Yes-yes.

Taken from the Wikipedia source first linked in my Opening Post:
During the late 1800s, planchettes were widely sold as a novelty. In 1890, businessmen Elijah Bond and Charles Kennard had the idea to patent a planchette sold with a board on which the alphabet was printed, and thus had invented the first Ouija board. Bond was an attorney and inventor of other objects. An employee of Kennard, William Fuld took over the talking board production and in 1901, he started production of his own boards under the name "Ouija".

From personal experience I have had no luck with them. I think this was mostly inpart to the fact that the person I was using the board with didn't have the commitment level I had. I have heard that the board has to be spiritual tuned to the users, I know not if that had anything to do with it.

I learned more by clicking on the link and here's what I think of it:

I do not belive in posession because I feel that 1. no soul wants to share a body and 2. you would have to give permission.

Arguing myself on the permission thing, there is a certain amount of permission involved if you are holding seances and asking them to come to you. So I suppose that you could be possessed through seance, which is what makes using a ouija board dangerous to some since they are used as an accessory to a seance.

I have no desire to contact anything thought of as existing in the afterlife (angels, demons, souls, etc.). I feel that the only time to be contacting that world is in the passing from this one to that one. There is no reason good enough to validate contacting the spiritual world with or without the ouija board.

However, in the common use of a ouija board, it is not a seance setting. Therfore, I would hold that ouija boards are harmless when not used in connection to seances.

I still won't touch one.

When I have made attempts to use the OUIJA in the past, I had little luck. I think most of it was due to the fact that hte personusing the board with me didn't have the same level of commitment that I did. I have heard though that the board has to have some type of spiritual atunement with the users. Since I never got the board to work properly I can not be one to be sure. As far as being dangerous, I think that it would be a far more dangerous item if used to hit someone then it is likley to cause somekind of metaphysical damage.

well, having been a Ghost hunter, and Satanist/Occultist, for several years, i will say I noticed far more paranormal things in haunted houses and Seances than I ever did with a Ouija board. like candles in a seance, or chrystal balls and mirrors to Scryers, they can be used for communication with spirits. however, as with seances, you don't know if you are actually communicating with a Ghost, or a sinister spirit. i had 2, count them 2, instances of things happening with a ouija board.

1. the planchette flew straight up in the air and hovered.

2. it spelled the name of a long dead friend, that my other friend there with me knew nothing about.

as far as possesion, hell yes I believe in it. it can manifest itself in many forms. from the classic excorsist type possesion, to more subtls types. when I was in Satanism, I had a constant spirit companion, and many times was possesd by it. it came and went from me as it chose. Very few Ghosts are ever contacted by seance or boards. it is nearly always demonic or otherwordly.

A true ghost(spirit of the departed) have to expend a HUGE amount of energy to communicate with us in the living realm. very few do it.

so yes, if used in the proper way, with the proper state of mind, ouija boards CAN work. but most often leave one wondering what its really all about.

They are just Essentially a Toy based on a Real Device used in China for Seances. I mean Parker Brothers makes the Ouija Board. Who also make Monopoly! I think the Ouija version of today is just a Urban Legend? All kids have heard of other Kids who have had real life experiences with the Board!
The main Myth that I heard about it was that every Board has a Soul in it, but u just dont know it is Good or Evil? And no doubt 99% of the time when a Planchette moves it is being Pushed by someone who is touching it! I admit I pushed it a lot as Kid that was the whole fun of it! To Scare whoever u were with at the time!
And look througtout our history when the Churches Label certain things Evil and Inappropriate. Like Rock and Rock, Certain Books, and Movies, but never once the Ouija Boards! If the Church never once Tried to Abolish the Ouija Board, it says a lot about its Creditability in their Eyes!!!

Mind over matter. You can scare yourself into beleiving.. and generally 'odd happenings' tend to get related back to the ouija board especially after one using it. Kind of reminds me of conjurers etc.. if you can make others beleive with simple trickery you have everybody fooled. ;)

What are some of your Experiences with them?

I have never experianced anything strange or very worth mentioning, however I believe that may be because the persons I have played with were non-believers and did not take it seriously.

What do you think they were intended for?

I believe the original intention was profit by the manufacturer.

Why do you think some regard them as Dangerous?

I think some regard them as dangerous because they can be. I believe they work. One of my friends had an experience with a Ouija board that was rather unpleasant. She and her friends were using one, asked if the spirit was evil, and it said 'yes. They got creeped out so they took their hands off. The planchette continued to move, and the light in the lamp they were using exploded. They flipped the board and ran out of the room; now, I personally believe her, however I was not there so I cannot verify the experience first hand. However I believe that, in using a Ouija board, you are taking your life in your hands, as spirits both evil and not have access to it and therefore to you.

I think many things like the ouija board are infused with the energy that we give them. I also think that our beliefs in what they are supposed to do have an impact on what happens.

I have a board. I have had it for a long time now. I have never been quite brave enough to use it. Why?
Becuase I do believe there are good and bad spirits around us......and why would I want to chance contacting a bad one? When the good ones want me to know something...they find a way.

I had actually forgotten I had a board...this might just be the time to toss it.

I have had some rather inteesting experiences with one, but it is too much to talk about here. They were made fo contacting the dead or spirits. You can get possessed by them if you play along. They do not like to be made fun of in any way. ots of harm can come from these, but I have also learned that sometimes good can as well as long as you are very careful

Ouiji Board=bad.
Very Bad.
With a O.U.I.J.I(:b) board you allow not only good spirit but evil ones as well.
Which is not good at all. Well of course.
I have(but dont use it anymore) A ouiji board and i ended up letting a whole lot of evil spirits in to my home. and i do live by a cemetary so that is not good either.
lets just say we had to cast a lot of spirits out. on the bright side i got to talk to my aunt for a little bit.

Since I have been known ro jumpp at my onw nsgaowl ouija boards are not too different but the sketicism of believing someone i the "circle" is just being mischievous, got over it. When I went away to school there were tons of urban megends xoncerning peple playing qith ouja boards or even makig their own and marking it with their own blood; believing it would somehow become a more powerful instrumetnt.

color me a punk - i would hate to find out it worked while using it (unless it gave lottery numbers)

hey if i could find one that gave lotto numbers i would then go out and buy one. lol

other than that i dont want one especially in my home i may be superstitious but they kinda freak me out. when i was younger we used one and weird freaky things started happening to me and some friends. we would leave the house and come back doors would be locked. we never locked them and what we thought was no one home. then another occasion there was a knife in some cherry tomatoes and no one was home. we left it in the basement, never used it again and left it there when we moved. may be a coincidental but not even trying that again. I was 10-11.

What are some of your Experiences with them? I only ever used them for stupid questions, most of them very inappropiate. I have, however, read a book on them which shed some light on their nature.

What do you think they were intended for? I don't think they intended to be anything more than what they are, a game. In the book I read people used them for far more serious purposes, often times by themselves, and were often times bothered by "dark" or "evil" beings, sometimes restless spirits, incubi, succubi, etc.

Why do you think some regard them as Dangerous? Anything that can be used to talk with those who are "passed on" can be dangerous. Tarot cards, free-writing, anything. More often than not, spirits whose intentions are not pure will come across faster than those who are with pure intentions.

Just a glass that is used as the marker and something with the letter and numbers and yes and no on it. TheOuija board spirits didnt like me too much they kept calling me evil. Among other strange things. It also didnt like the color blue for what ever reason.

Ouija boards are going to continue to be one of those things that people have to experience in person to believe that it works. It's a portal to talk to the dead but it's a weak one as it relies on too many people. It's too easy for people to manipulate the pointer on the ouija board. I haven't used it because my mom had an experience with it and she raised me to fear it. The ouija board hovered above the bed, set the bed on fire and then flung itself across the room.

Elemental, I noticed you mentioned 'tossing' your Ouija Board. I've heard that once you own one it is Bad Luck to get rid of it. Has Anyone Else heard of this?

I haven't yet had the opportunity to use one but I would love to. I've heard it is dangerous to use because it is a portal to a spiritual dimension. I lost the chance when one of the girls in the group chickened out lol.

I remember a bunch of friends and I messing with a Ouija board when I was in High School.

I don't recall exactly what we asked and how it answered, but I do remember how freaked out we were and I have no desire to be involved with one again.

Crimsonwolf, I'm glad that you had a Good Experience to share. There have been others that Haven't had anything Negative happen upon using a Ouija Board. This serves to Strengthen my Opinion that, for the most part, they are Harmless. I wouldn't say they are Entirely Harmless, however. When meddling with the Paranormal nothing could be called Safe. It's something Unknown and therefore no one can Predict the Outcome of any one Event.

While I Appreciate your Concern, Teasa, this thread isn't Necessarily about my Thirst for Knowledge. This is More about Discussion. I'm not really all that curious about Ouija Boards, actually. Skylla just seemed to think it was a Good Idea to start a thread discussing the Pros and Cons of them since she'd seen them mentioned Frequently throughout the forum.

So, in further Discussion..... I started another thread on EVPs and I noticed that the site I used as a Reference also had some Information on Ouija Boards. A Very Good Point was brought up. The author of the site Suggested that it may be the Subconscious of a Particular Participant that would Cause the Ouija Board to work; saying that Instead of it being Communication from a Spirit, it was Someone touching the planchette that was making it Move and Say (spell out) things that they Wouldn't Normally say. Does Anyone Believe this Could be a Possibility?

Also, he mentions an Experiment where one would Wear a Blindfold While Using the Ouija Board While someone else Wrote Down what was Spelled Out. Has Anyone Tried this?

I have never personally used these devices; however I believe they were used with communion with the deceased. Many believe them to be dangerous because they could be the interface with demons on another plane which could possess an individual.

I could swear I posted on another thread about this. Rather than get caught up in what everyone else said, I have had many experiences with a Ouija board with family and friends. It was not done as a game as it is NOT a game even though sold in stores. I firmly do not believe in any stories that come out of playing with them. I think it is hype personally.

Any tool and I mean any tool used through and including Tarot will open a person up because part of being a good reader is psychic ability. You must do things prior to using any method of divination. We would cleanse our boards and say something over it to keep out negative entities and I will not use the word demon. That's more relative to belief systems.

I don't personally believe everyone can make the board work. Some will not and some will have luke warm results. It takes knowing how to raise energy. Many have fairly developed psychic abilities or are energy workers of some sort or another that use it often and get pretty good results from doing so.

Most in my family are vampyrics and I am a spiritualist and have worked with a medium using the board. The planchette flew and we couldn't follow it so we didn't try. We had someone sitting with us to take all the letters down and we broke it up afterward.

We always shielded the board and only positive entities could enter because here we do have positive and negative reality. It was interesting to say the least. With my family I have had results but the planchette moves much slower. If you don't do the right thing you could get some entity that might play with you. It was never meant for one person to use alone. It is actually suppose to go across the laps of the two using it. I have done it on a table too but that was with people I knew had high psychic abilities. They didn't need the connection.

As far as the unconscious mind being apart of it, I couldn't say. I believe in a spirit world as I have been in seances as well and believe me anyone there if enough ability is there and seen by the entities can be the vehicle for entering and used as a medium to speak through. I have seen the medium in residence be bypassed and another person used as the channel. So basically this is what happens when you use a board...its a channel for communication from another plane.

Any form of psychism whether you use runes, cards, automatic writing, or any other form as I said of divination, one or the other is no more harmful than any other. People have just been brainwashed to think it is because of books and movies. That's my opinion.

If you are not experienced in cleansing, grounding and shielding...you shouldn't use the board. I'm not saying you will get possessed as I don't believe that can happen unless you invite an entity in, all I am saying is you could either have nothing happen or let in entities that will play with you, misrepresent themselves. I do believe in those as there are some near this plane that would be only too happy to mess with you but would they harm you...no as they cannot. As I said though can happen with any form of divination.

I'm kinda shocked that so many had no results. I do have to agree with LadyNightdancer, not everyone can make the board move.
I had many experiences. I played one almost daily for 3yrs when I was younger. Always said I would never touch one again, haven't in 10yrs. Maybe one day I will again.
Let's see experiences...The planchette flying in the air, across the room, etc. See I'm the type that needs proof the other person isn't doing it, so I would ask for proof it was real. It got were I could ask to turn the lights on & off, and it would happen. Only 2 of us in the room & no one near the switch. They would make doors close & open.
I think it depends on the person though, you have to let yourself be open to it.
As far as getting rid of them, I had always heard to bury them deep in the ground, walk away & never look back.

Personally, I must admit to moving the indicator around. There were times that I knew the movement was not my doing, but I honestly believe it was my friends.
My mother has a story about a Ouija board she owned. According to her, the indicator would move on it's own, without anyone touching it. I've never known her to lie.

I don't know that I'd classify it's origin as a game but it was a craze. Spiritism in general in the 19th century was huge and there were all number of products in use by 'professional spiritists' as well as products to use at home for 'medium parties' which were all the rage in the 1850's.

My problem is that if this is so dangerous, how could so many people have been using it in the 19th century WITHOUT ill effects. I think that the belief of the Ouija's danger came about for two reasons.

One) Spiritists and modern mediums often claim they're evil...interestingly enough, ouija boards could be construed as competition to the modern medium since, with a ouija board, anyone can contact the spirits and therefore not need the services of a medium. It also lessens the mystery around these people and may perhaps bruise their ego. If anyone can contact the spirit world with a Ouija board, then what great talent do these spiritists have?

Two) Religion actually has common ground with professional psychics and mediums to keep people from thinking it easy to reach the dead. All kinds of sticky philosophical questions about the afterlife might be answered and it's no question that this kind of distraction could lead folks away from the various denominations. Plus the bible forbids divination.

So with those two factors, it's not hard to see where the EVIL came about as regards the Ouija's rep. I stand by the fact that for 50 years or so after their invention, modern spiritism, Ouijas and their close relatives like psychographs and such were not considered evil but more of a fun way to talk to the dead and a form of entertainment.

After the girls stopped screaming and the lights where turned back on, they saw the fishingline we attached to it.

Got to love crashing slumber parties.

To be absolutly honest, I've never even seen a ouija board in person, but the pictures stir some sort of instinct to stay away.

I find it very interesting to see so many people have such experiences both in things happening with no appearant cause and things rigged up/intentional. I think it would be even more interesting to see it work without having someone touch it (with many checks to be sure there is no way it could move by someone's influence).

I would not own one, but if one should ever come into my posession, I'd burn it and bury the ashes, just to be sure. I'd never even open the box.

FelixFelix, I Always look forward to Your Posts. You are Talented at bringing about Different Angles from which to View a Subject. The point about Ouija Boards being a Threat to Both Mediums/Psychics/Spiritualists and Religious Sects is very Plausible. I'd never Thought about it like that Before. Your welcome Sacred. I genuinely don't have a firm opinion yet as to whether there is anything to the ouija board. I've messed around with them and obtained little results...even when the person next to me was rather rattled by the very same experience.

I suppose there is the possibility that the board acts as a (psychic or spiritual?) focus allowing us to get a more pronounced result as opposed to by oneself. It is also possible that the board really isn't necessary and that any connection would continue to happen whether the board was upside down, right side up or not there at all. It would be interesting to note if when Penn & Teller had flipped the board over, the planchette was moving to where the letters were on the other side of the board.

However, I'm also familiar with other scrying techniques (like the pendulum) that rely on minute muscle movements that we often don't perceive we're making at all. So if one is in fact allowed to actually touch the planchette, then these movements could be subconsciously our own doing (in which case we're having a rather lengthy conversation with ourselves and just don't know it).

It's these subtle possibilities which seem to be forever open to bias, interpretation, and debate, that leave me in a perpetual state of wonder at whether the board is a hoax, a game, a tool, or a gateway. I will say however that I don't hold any fear or ominous feelings in the presence of a board but I guess sometimes it depends on what we bring to the metaphysical table with us and not what's on the table itself.

my thoughts on ouija boards are i have one and i love it but the reason they should be regarded as dangerous is because your opening a door and like all doors just because you invite one or two don't mean that there won't be many and there thoughts are often based on your own and thats why my mom wil not let me get on when i'm mad or upset because the some of the sprites i have spoken to she did not aprove of( i will not speak there names out of respect for the dead i don't want a bunch of kids who don't share the same respect bringing up just to be cool or what ever)

ok my exp.s on having one of these boards wasnt pretty.

1) i was goofing off with a friend of mine in my room and i didnt think it would be dangerous though i talked to a demon that had a obession over me that it wouldnt leave me alone. after my friend left to go home this demon stayed with me until i finally got rid of it thanks to a spell i got from another friend. this demon wanted me for all himself that it tried to get me to move back home after trying to get me + my then bf evicted from making a loug bang noise above a old hag's apt. (did a spell and demon gone)

2) my then best friend (now ex friend) and i played with it until it freaked us out with some demon calling himself satan but it wasnt him though (dont ask how we knew) we wanted to get rid of the board so one night we put it outside in the trashbin and next morning it was sitting on the friend's bed. we screamed to the point of putting it in the shed for another night and again it showed up on the bed. i left the board over her house without her knowning and when i woke up in my own bedroom it was on my desk i freaked out so badly i was stuck with this thing. (until u read the last exp i had with it)

3) then another guy friend of mine told me about how he noticed the room is always cold since i still had the board with me and he felt something going through him to the point a evil spirit grabbed him by the neck and tried to kill him but some good spirit stopped it from doing the killing then somehow the door to the gateway closed in my bedroom.(which i never knew i had on and how it was closed but i think it was my late grandmother that helped me closed it for good). my guy friend took the board away after i wanted it outta my house and the board never came back to me.

so i have been trying to tell my all my friends that board isnt a game and even making a home version is even more dangerous. since that thing opens portals where it can be anything from angels to spirits even demons. it hard as hell to shut the door but i was lucky my late grandmother was watching over and shut that door. This is my Warning: SO PLEASE DONT EVEN PLAY WITH THAT BOARD!!!!

i myself have had a number of events due to the use of the ouija board, only a few of which i was present during the use but had to clean up the mess that it caused. the top use that i was involved with was accually fun and no bad came of it. a friend of mine moved into an old manor house down the street from the farm house i lived in at the time (this was in england) he came to me complaining of nightmares and the fact that his bedroom furnature kept moving in the night. we removed all of the furnature in his room and then, knowing carpet wasn't part of the original house, removed the carpet to find a ouija board painted on the the wood floor of his room. after casting a protective circle i sat on on the floor to meditate. apon asking a question i was physically moved around the room as if i was the marker itself. as i said it was alot of fun. however, once we were done we rented a sander and cleared the floor and refinished it and blessed it. nore more nightmares or moving furnature.

as a note i always suggest casting a circle before using a ouija board, just to make sure nothing escapes.

I have "played" with a ouija board twice. That is enough. Both times very real frightening things happened.

I think they were just intended for sheer entertainment.. Although in some cases most have claimed to experience something supernatural with it.. I have one, and I don't use it.. I feel that it really does nothing, but pass the time with friends at get togethers.~NFA

That's a Very Interesting point about the Penn and Teller Experiment, FelixFelix. It Would be Beneficial to know if the Planchette was moving to the Correct letters/words on the Other side. Perhaps the Experiment could be conducted on a Glass table while someone took notes from Beneath. lol Any Volunteers?? :D

Quija Boards are real. Their not some childhood game as everyone makes them out to be. We used one at work one time because for years there has been this rumor that a ghost is around and he likes to play jokes on us and hes the one that makes all the cups fall off the counter when no ones even 10 feet from the spot. Or hell make the coke machine start running automatically and such like that.

Hes even been caught opening doors on the secuirty camera. I for one didnt beleive it at first because i mean cmon i work at a movie theater...its scary most of the time because theres never much light in the back halls and i can see how when were closing up people can get scared being alone back there and such but after that night with the board i started beleiving.

Turns out theirs more than one ghost thats actually there. Some of them are nice but one we encountered wasnt so friendly. Turns out the one ghost i was talking about earlier was named john and he had died in the theater when it was first built and it had burned down. He used to be an employee. My friend checked the history the next couple of days and turns out the theater did in fact burn down in the early 1950's and their was in fact a guy named John that worked during that time. It was amazing.

But after that night i promised not to use one again. Because you never know what exactly its opening up.

The Ouija board is a tool that allows the person that is in controll to influence those who are observers...not so much those who are participating because they will always have that extra doubt....for participating.

I, MYSELF with th elights on have seen Ouija board catch fire, slid across the counter and go into a trash can..There wee no wires I pulled it out of the trash my self and stamped it out.. I can not explain as to why this happened , But I do know it did...

I think that Ouija boards only work if you believe in the possibility that they will. You have to have a mind open enough to the belief that something can speak through them for something to want to.

I had many good experiences with Ouija boards, talking to the same person for a period of months. Unfortunately the final time i used one, a malevolent spirit decided to have some fun and pretend he was the person i usually spoke to and then tried to cause some trouble and attempt to manifest. I've never used one since.

Ouija boards are vey much real even though they are sold in stores like a toy.... I would not sugest using one unless you really know what you are doing. I had something lying dormant in me for quiet some time becaue I didnt know how to protect myself then.
