Ok I just recently watched a documentary about dragons. There was a discovery a few years ago in the Caspian mountains of frozen dead bodies. Two were dragons and 4 were men in ancient armour.

The whole thing was really interesting to watch as they pieced together the dragon's story and their evolving from the dinosaurs.

So after watching this program my questions to you all...

Dragons, Unicorns, Pegasus any other creature of myth..

Did they exist and just killed off by man...

Or are they just the stuff of legends?

Please do give your opinion, no yes I believe they exist! Explain your beliefs please.

In answer to my own questions, it is simply Yes.. I do believe they existed, that these creatures, like dragons, mammoths, buffalo, the dodo... Have been killed and had their habitats encroached upon and destroyed. With dragons some evidence, questionable as it is exists so I believe in time more evidence of creatures that inhabit the imagination of mankind will arise.

Well, man doesn't kill... everything.

Animals have gone extinct before man even evolved, and have naturally gone extinct since.

And you can't really blame ancient man for not understanding when surviving was his main goal for killing. We are predators by nature.

I've seen that.Man seems to kill anything that they don't understand.Things that are
a threat to there lifestyle. They kill things
to get it out of there way.Man will never..EVER believe in thoes creatures..unless we find bones or remains.
If they found dragon bones..they would prob, just call it a dino.

Well, I guess that is hard to say. I guess in a more logical point of view, I do believe that they did exist at one point. But, I just do not know for sure. Dragons (reptiles) are all around us. There had been many different kinds of reptiles in the years of the past, which dragons could have been one of them. Of course they went extinct. But, regardless, they had been there.

I do believe that some sort of dragons existed in the past. The unicorn, I think is possible, buy not in the form of a modern day horse with a horn. Perhaps the original unicorn was made more horse-like in the telling and re-telling of the legends. For that matter, I do not believe that any of the "Hybrid beings" existed in the form we think of them, a lion with birds wings, etc. There may have been beasts with some of these charactaristics but not in the form we think of the,.

Just my $0.02

Well just to clarify the program I watched, they found the frozen remains of two dragons, dinosaurs with wings they were both female dragons one was an offspring. The men that were, well found one was burnt to death and was covered with carbon the other men well ripped apart by claws and teeth, the last man to die killed the mother dragon.

Then the scientist did the back tracking and putting the puzzle pieces together. Just like they did with prehistoric park. The dragons were around during the time of the meteor that destroyed the dinosaurs. The only thing to survive that were creatures that lived in the ocean, rays, sharks, crocs and they believe the dragons because they could adapt themselves to live in water.

As things settled down they evolved and thats where sea serpents evolved. Then some moved onto land again, evolving again into two different forms one was the chinese style dragon so it could live in the rainforests of asia and the other adapted to mountainous terrains... then they were killed off and became extinct during the middle ages before the crusades began.

Then they came back to the two dragons they discovered and pieced together the story through local legends that were immortalized in the local church on the stained glass windows.

I wish I could remember the name of the program that I watched. But just that over view will have to do.

And so far thanks for the response guys and I do agree with Birra that sometimes it isn't man that destroys everything... but he has a huge hand it in it as well.

I believe these things had existed , BUT NOT in the form represented to us by very talanted artists. For instance , the mermaid....seen by wary sailors, nothing more than probebly a Manatee! But to them it is a srange creature and givin all that time at sea...well , anything looked good to them! And as stories are told and re-told throught he centuries things tend to get hyped a bit.
Dragons are not too far fetched , they may have been throw backs , big lizards , or left-overs from dinosaurs.
Giant squid was a myth for awhile , but they now are proven to exist, however rare , in fact they have the largest eye of any living creature on the planet. There is a truthful reality to all of the mystical beasts , but just not in the fanciful way as we have come to know them.

I saw a programme about them, and specific species of dragons (!!!) still DO exist.only they are in shapes of little lizards, and no fire goes out of their mouth, but scientists prooved they have the same elements of a dragon.thus, these poor lizards(which, btw, are not that poor since they are deadly) are the evolutionary continuation of dragons.therefore, dragons might have been sometime in our world...but not men killed them-that's not really real.I think other animals,or weather changes killed them.so or so like dinosaurs...:)

dragons, unicorns, pagasus and such... to me these things are very real. I however, do not think that they have died off, just evolved... scientifically speaking it you cross a mountain goat with a pony you get a horselike creature with one horn... My thought on wingged creatures is that evalution changed them into creatures that we still have today, the experts say the kimodo dragon is the last remaining species of dragon, yet it does not fly and does not breathe fire. Still I would have liked to see them in their time and prime...

The myth's of dragons are too widespread for them not to have existed in one form or another in the past and yes still today in smaller sized lizards. Just as man evolved perhaps the dragons evolved into smaller creatures to continue their own existance. I agree that unicorns probably existed but went extinct. I won't say man had anything to do with it though since their own genetic makeup could have caused it. As far as pegasus, I don't think a horse was the inspiration but rather a very large bodied bird for that one. Just as artists today take inspiration and paint what their inner eye sees, so too would have artists in times past. I'm not saying man doesn't have much to answer for in the destruction of other species but not always and in olden times there were just not enough humans around with spare time to do that much damage. Trying to survive kept them pretty busy, I suspect.

I agree with Nightgame on this. I also think that the creatures of myth existed in some form. Perhaps not what the pictures of today are but something similar. In olden times things that we were afraid of or did not understand sometimes took on larger or more scary proportions than they really had. *Still do I think*

I believe that things of myth exist either now or have existed and have since died off. By no means, are the creatures that inhabit the earth now, the only creatures that have ever inhabited the earth. Animals are always evolving and there are outside forces that are always going to prune or kill off a species, a.k.a man, meteor. It makes sense that dragons may have been an evolution of dinosaurs that survived the meteor because something had to inorder for the earth to repopulate.

To me these mythical things exsisted and still do. But I am one of those odd ones..That belives in all that jazz...But in some form or another things like dragons and unicorns had to have been around for the images and liknesses to be portrayed in so many differant cultures all over the wolrd all through out history. I guess it really comes down to if a person them selves believs in these such things..SOme peopel will tell you there is no scientific fact and all that cause they dont belive and soem one who does might state other wise..

Yes i believe mystical creatures exist or existed at some point of another. there is a lot of things out there that we have or have not seen that existed. some ppl are under the impression that if you don't see it ti is not true. not always the case. just because they may have lived back then and not now does not mean they did not once roam here. like dinosaurs we didn't see them but there getting bones form some were. and on the history story of the dragon i think i saw the same one of one of the same very interesting. makes you wonder though.

I do believe the history of the Dragon dates back as far as the Sumerian era. Recalling from class, I think they created the Dragon myth to be able to fight against the more powerful Gods.

I don't believe there is any evidence that these Dragons lived anywhere else but in the mind of their creator. If there is any evidence I bet the Welsh would be interested 'tho!

I believe they may have existed, too many cultures involve them in their writings before widespread exploration came about. Man may have made some species extinct, but others have gone naturally so, due to climate changes or other. The bones that have been identified as belonging to the griffon, have actually been found to be a species of dinosaur near Kazahkstan and Mongolia. Many myths have their origins, though may have drastically departed from reality.

most myth has some basis in reality. When you think about the lack of knowledge about simple things like radioactive materials then you can see that deformities like cyclops or fish tales could really exist. The Chernoble melt down showed some evidence of the when babies were being born with one eye in the middle of there forehead or with fish tales

I believe that unicorns did and still do exist, but the Q is where are they now??? Well I know that there are such animals that may or may not still be here on this earth due to man and other sources of stuff that occurred way before man was alive here. such as flying dragons and such, cause if it were true why they got proof now??

Plus I just saw a show with a lot of scientist who infact discovered that lockness does exist cause they got proof of it by space sonar catching this huge thing in the waters going too far deep even man have discovered all of what the ocean lays before them. They just cant get the thing to catch it its way too smart and quick 4 us to even try and catch lol with what little stuff we know now. just my 2 cents cause I saw this documentary first hand over in Ireland were Iam from laters. If you're talking about the one that was on the Discovery Channel a few years back, that was a mocumentary. A bunch of guys got together and discussed how dragons hypothetically could have existed, applying actual science to the thesis.

I remember they also did one on animals of the distant future...that one was funky. O.o

I believe in dragons, and they exist still, if one just knows where to look.why, simply because I have seen them in this world and plane and many past ones.As for unicorns, I have an open mind as to whether they exist or not.Anything is possilble, one does not always have to have facts in black and white. The heart knows sometimes more than facts and documentation. But few listen any more.

I think it's possible that other creatures could have come from dragons, and unicorns and stuff like that. But at the same time it just seems like legends to me. i saw that...i hate to tell you but it was just a story...they didnt really find dragon bodies...dont you think it would have been on the news and stuff if it was true?

however i do think that many mythological creatures did exist...dragon were actually writen about by the ancient chinese as if they were talking about real animals...i think the reason people think that they are just myths is because they are so strange looking...but let me ask you this...if elephants were said to be a mythological creature, wouldnt you agree because of its unusual look???

As many have said I to believe each of these and other mythical creatures existed at some point in time..
I also think that they have evolved into a form that only those with the right abilities and eyes can still see them this however is just from my beliefs and may be taken with a grain of sand, but if the eyes are open the truth can be seen in all things and all forms...

well I do belive that they once existed and were killed off but not for food, for fun like the buffalo. the reason I say this is cause when have you ever heard of a feast of dragon meat,
But they were hunted as protection for villages that were to close to a dragons lair, and they were hunted for potion material, and spell materia.

Mythical beasts of legend can be both fact and fiction. It is a well known fact that what sailors used to mistake for half woman-half fish (or mermaids) were actually manatees (or sea cows). Now, creatures like dragons were in most likelihood created in myth as a fearsome creature that only the strongest could defeat, serivng the purpose of villain without being a fellow human.

As for flying horses, greek legend. Phoenixes? Legend. Some things are just that.

I guess I will go against the grain. I don't really believe any of these creatures existed. I think there may have been similar species, like teradachtyls that were sort of mythologically morphed into these creatures. But then again, a really good point has been made that humans tend to kill things off, so how could I ever really know for sure. So I have decided to remain open-minded about it, but skeptical.

I don't know why, I should be used to it by now, but I have to admit, I'm surprised by the number of people who so readily believe in myth. Dragons existing? Dragons and humans living at the same time? Trust me, if this were the case, scientists would be having a wet dream over it. Careers would be made! Fortunes would be earned.

Why would such a thing be kept from us? If there is irrefutable evidence, why isn't it on the cover of my National Geographic? Other amazing finds are. Perhaps it's some conspiracy to keep the things of legend from us for some political end? Come now. Conspiracy theorists are even scarier than the government. It's fun to believe, but what's so wrong with needing solid evidence?

If anything at all, doesn't the idea that a winged dinosaur would be the closest answer that is plausible? And if so, living at the time of man just isn't likely according to anything we now understand, so as fun as it is to blame the decline of the planet once again on man... not likely in this case.

I'd say that as of present the closest thing we have to dragons would be alligators and crocodiles, considering that not all dragons depicted had wings, nor was breathing fire ever a prerequesite, and they do sorta have a dragon-like appearance, no?

"Dragons. They had not stopped; since they were active in far later times, close to our own. Have I said anything to suggest the final ending of dragons? If so it should be altered." I know it only pertains to his mythology, but I always liked that little quote of Tolkien's.

In response to Joli's point: Such information would be kept from the human race because humans are panicky, dangerous creatures. You wouldn't want rednecks out with their shotguns trying to hunt a dragon, now would you? I don't think so.

I think man hunted them into extinction. Many otherkin that identify themselves believe the same of the Dragon. As for the other creatures, I am neutral on that. I would like to believe they did but one never knows with mythology because somethings are used as a means to identify things in a sort of code form and are only symbolic of certain things and not literal so its hard to say what is the truth. We still have the Kamodo dragon which I hear is quite fierce.

From the METRO ( UK ) 15th March,2007.

Unicorns don't drive trucks - official.

The man who prosecutors said had claimed that a unicorn had been driving his truck when it crashed did not actually claim that a unicorn had been driving his truck when it crashed, it emerged today.

Sadly for unicorn fans everywhere, the chief prosecutor in the case - in Billings, Montana - had to admit on Wednesday that the prosecutions claim was entirely based on a misunderstanding of legal slang.

Apparently, a deputy prosecutor misunderstood a colleagues email which referred to the accused man using the 'unicorn defence'.

In legal circles, 'unicorn defence' is a term used to describe a situation in which a defendant blames a mythical other person for their crime.

The suspect, 42-year-old Phillip C. Holliday Jr., actually blamed a mysterious woman for driving his truck into a light pole while he was drunk. Not a hooved, single-horned fantasy animal.

Unfortunately, the deputy prosecutor took the slang term literally.

County Attorney Dennis Paxinos apologised to the court, the public and Holliday himself for the mistake. 'Mr. Holliday has other serious problems, but this is not one of them,' he said.

Of course, the possibility cannot be entirely ruled out that the mystery woman who supposedly crashed the truck was actually a shape-shifting unicorn in human form. However, this seems unlikely.

Mr. Holliday denies criminal endangerment and drunken driving. The case continues.

All "myths" are based after some fact. So after so many writings and even some scientific proof that many of these things exsist. From dragons, unicrons, vampires, and many, many more things. I'm not saying that these things don't still exsist, but i have to say that in some way, shape, or form they have through the ages.

Just because we don't see them all the time doesn't mean they are real.

There have been many cases where animals that were thought to be extinct show up.

At one time I'm sure all of the mythological creatures were around, maybe not in the way they are described in fantasy novels but some incarnation.

Why is it that almost every culture ibn the world has stories about dragons, great sea beast and giant birds

i'm skeptical of everything that cannot be proved to me. however, i believe every myth has some kind of truth behind it. there was something that inspired every mythical creature.
now, whether this was a case of mistaken identity by humans who were unfamiliar with a creature (or whose mind was under an influence of some sort) or actual animals that became extinct... i do not know.
no matter the truth the fascination we have with such creatures in our imagination is priceless
